St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 43/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 13. 11. 2011 33. NEDELJA MED LETOM 33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Diocese of Hamilton Liturgy chages coming NEW ROMAN MISSAL - No 4 The Eucharistic Prayer, the highpoint of the entire liturgy, begins with what is called the Preface Dialogue. It begins with the priest's greeting: The Lord be with you, and the new response: And with your spirit. The second part is unchanged. However, the final part of the dialogue is changed in the assembly's response to match the Latin text: Dignum et justum est. The new response is: It is right and just. The priest will then take up this response and continue the prayer with these words: It is truly right and just... The words of the Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) have been changed only in the first line. Instead of saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, we will say: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts. This translates: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Saboath. According to the punctuation In the present text, the words "God of power and might" describe the Lord. In the new text, "Holy Lord God of hosts" is the name by which we are addressing God. The word "hosts" refers to the armies or groups of angels around the throne of God. See the vision in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah (6.3). The invitation to the memorial acclamation has changed. Instead of the priest interrupting the Eucharistic Prayer with an admonition or instruction addressed to the assembly (Let us proclaim the mystery of faith), he will simply say: The mystery of faith. This matches the Latin: Mysterium fidei. The familiar first form of the acclamation: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again, has never been in the Latin edition of the Roman Missal, and therefore, will not be found in the new English edition. Instead, the fuller Latin text has been freshly translated and included: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection, until you come again. The other two acclamations have likewise been retranslated as follows: A. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again. B. Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free. During the Communion Rite there is a notable change (to match the Latin text) in the invitation which the priest extends and in the assembly's response: Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world: Blessed are those called to the Supper of the Lamb. All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. The priest's text echoes the words of John the Baptist (John 1.29) and the words from the Book of Revelation 19.9. The assembly's response echoes the words of the Roman Centurion, found in Matthew 8.8. PISMA S FRONTE »Jaz sem zdrav in se mi dobro godi!« Vseslovenski kulturni odbor je organiziral prihod gledališke skupine iz Slovenije, Kulturno društvo Čedrmac. Profesionalni igralci Alida Bevk, Gorazd Jakomini, Branimir Ličen, Rok Andres, Aleksander Tolmaier so pod vodstvom gledališkega režiserja Marjana Bevka, obujali večne grenke spomine, ki jih vse vojne puščajo v nas. Vojaki se odpravijo na fronto. Prijateljstva je konec. Vojna prijatelje spremeni v sovražnike. Ostanejo pogorela domača ognjšča in vdove v črnem. In spomin in opomin. Ob koncu pa so zrecitirali še nekaj pesmi nedavno umrlega slovenskega pesnika, esejista in prevajalca Toneta Pavčka. Sunday's Readings 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Read. Prov. 31:10-13.19-20.30-31 The good wife praised here uses all her gifts for the benefit of her family. Second Reading 1 Thess. 5:1-6 St Paul tells us not to worry about the date of Christ's second coming but to live as though he could come at any moment. Gospel Mat.25:14-30 or 25:14-15,19-21 Jesus calls us to respond to God with the same generosity with which God gave us all our gifts, and not to react with a fear that paralyses us. "Should you not then have put my money in the bank?" Illustration A rather unusual charitable society has been set up recently. It is called "Giving What We Can". The founder is a research fellow in ethics who thinks that compared with those who are poor in the developing world many of us have more money than we need. We could give up at least ten per cent of our income and then choose the most cost-effective aid organisation in the developing world to use the money. We could then help people living in extreme poverty with no huge sacrifice to ourselves. He himself has given up one-third of what he earns and he says he is happier living at a lower standard of living. It is still quite comfortable, but what he gives up makes a real difference to those in dire need. We may think this sounds crazy, especially if we are out of work or on a low wage, but the prin- 344 | VESTNIK 2011 ciple applies to almost everyone. And many have responded to this initiative from all walks of life. They reckon that we do not need many of the things we have come to see as necessities and that we can make use of our surplus to help others rather than just buy more for ourselves. Gospel Teaching Jesus tells the parable about the talents after he has warned his disciples that the Son of Man will be returning one day in glory and that there will be an accounting. In his preaching he has spoken of God's unbounded mercy and love, and he has demonstrated this in his ministry by the way he has reached out to bring healing and help to those who are sick and poor, and all kinds of sinners. God's kingdom has broken into the world and in Jesus God has offered us the wonderful gift of sharing his divine life, eternal life. Jesus shows us how the gift of the kingdom is like a businessman who gives different sums of money to three of his employees and expects them to use them well. The first two make a good profit and are invited to take on greater responsibility and enjoy the boss's good favour. The third does not do anything with the money but just buries it in the ground to makes sure it remains secure. The focus of the parable is on this third employee. When he is challenged, he blames his employer because of his severity in dealing with people and admits he was too frightened to take the risk of producing fruit from the gifts he had been given. Everything depended on the image the three employees had of their master. Jesus reveals a picture of a loving God who is unlimited in mercy and kindness but who expects us to respond with a similar extravagance. No doubt among his followers there were those who felt safe with a God of strict justice, whose gifts must be preserved rather than being used to produce some benefit for others. They preferred to play safe and watch their backs. But the Lord expects his gifts to be appreciated and used to further his kingdom. That's why this parable ends with a tough reminder to the complacent and lazy that the Lord expects us to imitate his love, not take it for granted. Application The charity Giving What We Can is not a religious organisation, but its members can see clearly what the world needs if it is to be just. Even more are those who believe in the God of Jesus Christ called to try to put into practice today's Gospel by using what has been given to them. In his recent book Light of the World, Pope Benedict is asked why the Catholic Church, with 1.2 billion members, vast resources of personnel and the message of Good News, does not make more use of these gifts in bringing about changes in an unjust world. In his reply the Pope recognises the challenge and wonders, "how it happens that Christians who personally are believers do not have the strength to put their faith into action in a way that is politically more effective". We are called to have our own change of heart and recognise that it is possible to live with less: rather than holding on to what we have, to be willing to share what has been given to us. The Gospel confirms that if we make an effort to put our faith into practice and use our gifts fruitfully, we will indeed enter the joy of the master.
