Ljudje vseh celin in vseh časov, verni in neverni, pračlovek in civiliziranec atomske dobe. Diocese of Hamilton Liturgy chages coming NEW ROMAN MISSAL - No 5 In addition to the changes in the words of the assembly, the Revised English edition of the Roman Missal contains many changes in the words spoken by the priest. These changes have been made in order to bring the English text in line with the Latin text and to express more fully the rich meaning of the prayers of the Church. Many of the prayers are biblically inspired and the new translations will make this obvious. One example will illustrate this point. During the past forty years, we have become familiar with these words, spoken by the priest in the Third Eucharistic Prayer: From age to age you gather a people to yourself, so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the glory of your name. The new text, a more accurate translation of the Latin reads: and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. These words echo the words found in the Book of the Prophet Malachi (1.11) Furthermore, they highlight the eternal offering rather than a geographical or spatial offering of the one pure sacrifice offered to God. In addition to the changes in the words, there are a very few changes in the postures of the assembly which are being introduced at this time. These changes are specified in the new edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (the document which provides the instructions for celebrating Mass). * The first change takes place during the Presentation of the Gifts. The priest invites all to pray, saying: Pray brothers and sisters that your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All stand and then respond with the words.- May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands... The assembly will no longer wait to stand until after they have made their response. * The second change is more of a clarification. The Canadian edition of the General Instruction states that the approved gesture for the sign of peace is a handshake or a bow. The Instruction makes no mention of any words being exchanged at this moment. * The third change is related to approaching Communion. As each person approaches the minister to receive Communion he or she is asked to make a simple bow of the head. This is a sign of reverence in immediate preparation for the act of receiving Communion, which, in Canada, is to be received standing. This gesture is made only once before receiving Communion. It is not repeated again when receiving Communion from the chalice. Other personal expressions of piety or devotion, such as profound bows or genuflections are not appropriate. A common gesture of reverence is desirable to foster the unity of faith which Communion expresses. One of the new dismissal texts in the Roman Missal states: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. To these words, we say: Thanks be to God. May the new words of the Mass and our attentiveness to the common postures and gestures in the liturgy lead all of us to take up this commission with renewed commitment. Sodniki so bili: Cestnik Janez, Toni Franc, Joe Gosgnach in Lojze Sample . Sunday's Readings I 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Ezekiel 34:11-12.15-17 Ezekiel assures us that the Lord is our shepherd who will never cease to care for us. Second Reading 1Cor. 15:20-26.28 St Paul reminds us that through Christ's death we have the hope of eternal life with God. Gospel Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus speaks of the final gathering when all nations will be gathered before God. When that time comes the people will be separated one from another according to how they have lived their life on earth. Illustration Chocolat is a film set in the 1950s in Catholic France. Based on a book by Joanne Harris, it tells the story of a young woman who moves into a small village and opens a chocolaterie. The opening of the shop splits this very religious village into two camps: those who approve of the fun-loving young woman and those who oppose her as an immoral provocateur who wants to lead people astray. There is a stark contrast in the film between those who are following the discipline of Lent, yet are full of misery, and the young woman who has no particular belief except to help people to find love and reconciliation within their relationships. It is her acceptance of people, whoever they are, her genuine warmth towards everyone, which begins to change people's lives for the better. Gospel Teaching It's all too easy for us to exclude and condemn - to divide people into "them" and "us". When we do this, whether we are doing it consciously or not, we then tend to treat people in different ways. Those we love, those we like, those we think of as "one of us", we look favorably upon. We are willing to be kind to them, to care for them, to help them when they are in need. The others, the people we don't think we have anything in common with, the ones we may think of as "different" from us, we tend to keep away from - we don't see why we should do anything to help them out. Yet it is intriguing to note how the "blessed" in today's Gospel respond when the Son of Man praises them for the love that they have shown him. They are astounded. They haven't realized that they have been showing love and care towards Jesus. And this is simply because those who are blessed in God's kingdom are those who are willing to show love and care towards all people, whoever they may be, no matter whether they are "one of us" or not. Jesus is saying that for those who are willing to open their heart to all of humanity, the kingdom of God is theirs. Application In the film Chocolat, at first the religious villagers exclude and condemn one who does not appear to live by their rules, someone that they cannot see as one of themselves. But in the end the village priest realizes that faith is not so much about keeping to strict rules as it is about living a life of love, and he says as much in his homily on Easter Day: "I'm not sure what the theme of my homily ought to be. Do I want to speak of the miracle of Our Lord's divine transformation? Not really, no. I don't want to talk about his divinity. I'd rather talk about his humanity. I mean, you know, how he lived his life, here on earth. His kindness, his tolerance... Listen, here's what I think. I think that we can't go around. measuring our goodness by what we don't do. /-\ "Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me."
