Pogovore bosta nadaljevala danes. Vojaške čete intervenirale v spornem kraju Nagorno-Karabah v ZSSR — Štrajkov in izgredov vlada ne bo dolgo tolerirala MOSKVA, ZSSR — V zadnjih dneh so enote redne sovjetske vojske zasedle mesta v rePubliki Armeniji in v kraju Nagorno-Kara-bah v sosednji republiki Azerbaidžanu. — Kratke vesti — Seoul, J. Ko. Rudi Knez. Z leve so: Janez Sršen, pevovodja, Janez Žakelj, Stanc Knez, Paul Lavriša, Mark Jakomin, Janez Semen, Miran Dolinar, Tomaž Sršen, Štefan Režonja, Tomaž Štepec, Ione Hauptman, Klement Hren, in Nejci Slak. d «.«>: j. iKhtwis) KONCERT FANTOV NA VASI CLEVELAND, O. - V soboto, 10. septembra, so Fantje na vasi podali svoj vsakoletni koncert v Slovenskem narodnem domu na St. Clair-ju. Spored so odprli z ameriško in slovensko himno. Sledile so Dolenjska (Blaž Potočnik), Spev Koroške (Pavle Kernjak), Je na Dravci mehva (Miro Kernjak), narodna Vinski brat in Fantovske pesmi: Oja, oja, ljub’ea moje, Travniki so že zeleni in Na zdravje nas’ga Janeza. Med temi so še posebno ugajale občinstvu obe koroški: Spev Koroške — Po naših dolinah spev lep nam doni, odmev še v pečinah veselo zveni — od Pavleta Kernjaka, in pesem njegovega sina Mirkota Je na Dravci mehva vsa vesela in razgibana, navdušeno zapeta z lepim solom Toneta Hauptmana. Za zaključek prvega dela so zapeli še dve angleški: Aura Lee in šegavo Vive 1’Amour — Naj živi ljubezen. Drugi del sporeda so pričeli s Hajdrihovo Buči, buči morje Adrijansko, bilo nekdaj si slovansko, in nadaljevali z Aljaževo Na dan Slovan — solo Nejči Slak. Vse pesmi so bile skrbno pripravljene in podane občuteno, ubrano in dinamično. O.. 23. septembra 1988 Prišli smo v nesmiselni položaj, ko imamo izredno draga živila in hkrati izjemno skromno kupno moč. Toda cena hrane je zrcalo gospodarske moči, družbene storilnosti in smotrne organiziranosti gospodarskega sistema držve. Namesto cenene proizvodnje imamo drago predelavo, temu ustrezne visoke cene in hkrati sramotno slabo plačano delovno silo. AD). Kupna moč slabi in z njo tudi proizvodnja. Ali so nedotaknjene police in zaloge cilj proizvodnje? Gotovo niso. 4) Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 779. Ljudje so me sprejeli in me imajo radi. Zambija z evropskega in verskega gledišča. 3) namesto s celovitim tržnim mehanizmom, s sproščanjem zdrave ponudbe in demokratičnimi procesi. Posledice dolgoletnega utrjevanja državnega socializma in zaviranja demokratičnih tokov, usodnih za vsako gospodarstvo, zdaj plačujemo s strmoglavljenjem življenjske ravni in z razvojnim nazadovanjem. (Močne črke moje, op. ur. AD). Enostavno in jasno: Pogum! Študirajmo! Debatirajmo! Zavihajmo rokave! My First Visit to Slovenia by Jerry W. Koprivšek Ljubljana, Slov., Yugo. — Greetings to all from Šentožbolt, Slovenia where I am on a four week vacation visiting my birth place, and my three cousins, Karlo, Jernej, and Janez, and all other members of our Koprivšek family. 1 came to America with my sister, aunt and three brothers as an 11-year-old boy in 1920. This was my first visit to Slovenia since then. Slovenia is truly a beautiful country; it seems like living in another world, but with the same sky, same moon, stars and sun. It is a bit like Cleveland, Ohio with Slovenian radio and TV programs, only Cleveland is a small copy of Slovenia. In Slovenia you discover that most people you meet on the street or anywhere are Slovenian and will greet you with a “Dober Dan,” and a Slovenian smile. And what a contrast between the American and Slovenian airports. When we took off for Ljubljana from Kennedy Airport in New York, there were planes zooming in and out of Kennedy every 30 seconds. When we landed in Ljubljana, from the seven and three-fourths hours flight, on JAT plane, ours was the only plane on the entire airfield and it was a perfect landing at 8 a.m. Ljubljana time. There we walked to the customs office very quietly; no rushing, pushing or yelling, just as if we were going to Mass on a Sunday morning. At the end of the exit line stood eight of my relatives, whom I had never met, waiting to greet me, calling out Slavko, Slavko — my domače name — as they recognized me from photographs. From there it was one thrilling day to the next. On my first Sunday in Šentožbolt, 1 played the organ at the 10 a.m. Mass in the Šentožbolt church. By coincidence, it happened to be a Mass for “Rebrškovi” deceased, which is a house name for the Koprivšek home. This is the same church in (he same location with the same “Lipa” tree where I was an altar boy during my youth. A few days after meeting all of my relatives in Šentožbolt, I had the pleasure of meeting Ing. Miha Mazovec and his wife and Dr. Majda Mazovec, a Cardiologist, both of Ljubljana and both brother and sister of Rev. Father Robert Mazovec, pastor of our Saint Cyril Slovenian church in New York City where I am a member and live. 1 was introduced to Dr. Narcisa Košir, a dentist in Ljubljana and the well known and highly respected Professor Primož Romovš, a professor at the Academy of Science and Arts and a music composer. He is also an excellent organist who plays the organ at seven Masses every Sunday at three different churches. The Ljubljana Cathedral, the Holy Trinity Church, and at the Franciscan Seminary Church — all in Ljubljana. Professor Ramovš honored me by showing and playing for me each of the organs in the three churches. He pointed out to me that the Cathedral organ, a three manual pipe organ with 46 stops, built in 1911, is the largest pipe organ in Slovenia. At the monestary 1 met two Franciscan brothers, Brother Andrej Vugo and Brother David 'Strumpl, both whom I met at Saint Cyril’s Slovenian Church in New York when they were in America recently. A new mystery novel by L.es Roberts called Pepper Pike takes place in the Greater Cleveland area and its detective hero is a Slovenian called Milan Jacovich. Published by St. Martin’s Press, at a cost of $15.95, it is the first book in what is apparently a series of detective novels set in Cleveland. Milan Jacovich is termed a first-generation Slovenian-American who works out of an office at Fairmount and Cedar in Cleveland Heights. Jacovich, in the novel, has' likeable friends such as his Auntie Branka who came over from Ljubljana before the start of World War II and keeps a copy of the Ameriška Domovina on an oilcloth on her kitchen table. The hero of the novel was born and raised in Slavic Town and received a business degree and master’s in psychology from Kent State University. He served in Vietnam and was a member of the Cleveland Police Department. In his youth he married a woman of Serbian descent but has since divorced. (Aren’t all detectives divorced?) He hasn’t shed the values he learned on E. 55th St. He believes in working hard, showing respect for God and country, and bringing up kids not to slick up 7-Eleven as students. I also visited Maria Končan in Domžale, widow of Metod Končan, formerly of New York. Through my brother-in-law Karlo, Jernej and Janez, I also visited the village of Kolovrat, my birthplace, and “Bled,” where I met Mom’s two sisters, Jožica and Milka. While in Bled we also visited Bohinj, another tourist attraction similar to Bled. In that same area we could clearly see the famous Mt. Triglav with its three prong-like mountain peaks. As we drove towards home, we visited another famous place, the church and shrine to the Blessed Mother, Brezje. Its beauty, especially the interior, is so breathtaking, no wonder it is a great tourist attraction. What a beautiful and interesting vacation. All of this would have been impossible without the kindness and hospitality of Kristina, Tinka, Laurenc Koprivšek of Šentožbolt and other relatives to whom I am so grateful. Stores. Slovenian Women’s Union Branch 73 will play an active part in Sunday’s 8:30 a.m. Mass with a reading in Slovenian, a hymn sung at Communion time with members acting as Eucharistic Ministers, and Junior members as servers. All Slovenians, particularly sister-members of SWU are invited to join the activities. ‘Slovenian’ detective stars in new mystery novel '1ERISKA DOMOVINA, SEPTEMBER 23, 1388 Zarja Sets Concert and Dance Slovenian Singing Society Zarja will present its fall concert and dance on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Slovenian Society Home on Recher Ave., Euclid. The program, under the direction of Doug Elersich, with accompanists Ed Polšak and Jim Kozel, will consist of choral selections, ranging from the scintillating tempo of “Kolo,” to the Strauss operatic aria from Der Fleder-maus, The Bat (in Slovenian “Netopir”), and to the soulful “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” composed by Irving Berlin, whose 100th anniversary is being honored and remembered this year. The specialty appearances will be geared to the lighter and happier side of musical atmosphere. Donation is $5.00 per person; dance only, $4.00. But his radical ideas about reforming East block economic systems produced only yawns. Like other companies in Ljubljana, an alpine city near the Italian and Austrian borders, Iskra’s main markets are in the West. The Soviet Union isn’t sophisticated or rich enough to absorb its textiles, electronics, or other quality exports. “Gorbachev doesn’t bring us any business,” says one Iskra engineer. “We would have Preferred a visit from Reagan.” Vienna Waltz In the sea of poverty and repression engulfing the Com-ntunist world, Slovenia, one of the six republics that make up Jugoslavia, stands out as an island of wealth and freedom. Rer capita income is $4,500, twice the Yugoslav average. Although it has only 2 million inhabitants — less than one-tenth of Yugoslavia’s population — Slovenia generates nearly one-fifth of the country’s total economic output and a quarter of its vital hard-cUrrency exports. Ljubljana, the republic’s capital, looks like a prosperous Austrian city: elegant restaurants in 18th century r°coco buildings, overflowing dePartment stores and supermarkets, and car dealerships offering BMWs and Mercedes. In recent months a Slovene Spring has given the republic’s politics a freewheeling quality rarely found outside the West. Official trade unions have led strikes while the official press has questioned everything from Communist Party leadership to Yugoslav arms sales to Third World dictatorships. Mladina, a weekly published by the Socialist Youth Alliance, even denounced Defense Minister Branko Mamula as “the merchant of death.” In an editorial, the magazine said that the minister, who had just visited Ethiopia, should sell food, not arms, to hungry Ethiopians. “We don’t have any more taboos, none at all,” says AfW/w/’s editor, Robert Bot-terri. “In comparison, Gorbachev and glasnost are just cosmetics.” History helps explain Slovenia’s exceptional character. While most of Yugoslavia languished for centuries under Ottoman rule, Vienna ruled Slovenia. The Roman Catholic Slovenes remain proud of their Western European heritage and language, a Slavic tongue spiced with German. Slovenes say this background accounts for their Western work habits. “Slovenia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when its industrialization started,” says Marjan Senjur, a professor at Ljubljana’s Institute of Economics. “When the empire was dissolved in 1918, we enjoyed the highest starting point in Yugoslavia.” The English Language 1 by Steve Shimits walk down the street is to '"alk up the street. We are and shall always be working to preserve our heritage and culture. God bless you with good health, clear minds and generosity of your time and efforts. May He grant you a lifetime of fulfillment and happiness. Yours truly. Gene Drobnič, Chairman, 1988 One World Day Since then, the Slovenes have lengthened their lead. Even after Tito’s Communists took over Yugoslavia in 1945, Slovenia kept strong economic and cultural ties with the West. In 1948, Tito took Yugoslavia out of the Soviet orbit and, to a degree, opened its borders, decentralized its political structure, and injected market forces into its economy. Slovene entrepreneurs flourished, giving rise to such companies as Elan, a ski maker with about 14% of the American market. “We had our own perestroika and glasnost three decades ago,” boasts Professor Senjur, “and for a while we developed as fast as anywhere in the world, including Japan and Korea.” Escalating Tensions As the Yugoslav economy expanded, Slovene living standards soared. By 1979, Slovenes’ purchasing power was 80% that of their Austrian neighbors. But Yugoslavia, still an underdeveloped nation, couldn’t sustain the growth. The economy began to crumble, hurt by poor investment decisions and inefficient joint control of factories by workers and managers. By 1981, Yugoslavia was unable to service its $20 billion debt. Unemployment rose above 15%, even though it remained only 1% in Slovenia. As intJation soared into triple digits, Slovenia’s purchasing power fell: Today it stands at only 40% of the Austrian level. “We used to buy clothes in Milan or travel for the weekend to the opera in Vienna,” says Jože Smoj, assistant general manager of the Mercator trading company. “Now we can’t even afford to go skiing here at home.” The difficulties have steadily escalated the tensions between Slovenia and federal authorities in Belgrade. Slovenes believe they are being victimized by Yugoslavia’s disastrous economic policies, particularly Belgrade’s in- sistence that Slovenia subsidize the underdeveloped regions of Montenegro Macedonia, and Kosovo. While the policy has reduced inequalities, Slovenes complain that the poorer provinces have invested in inefficient, showy projects: steel, chemical, and textile plants that produce low-quality products salable only in the East block. “If we are going to take part in the technological revolution,” Mercator’s Smoj argues, “we must sell to the West.” Instead of just offering handouts to the poor provinces, Slovene business leaders would rather make direct investment. “I don’t want to give Kosovo money,” says Rado Dvoršak, director of the Slovin Beverage Co. “1 want to build my own factory there and run it.” Other Slovenes make more radical proposals. Respected economists are calling for an end to all state subsidies and to the tight restrictions on private enterprise. Impatient political activists have angered federal authorities with a long list of causes: a ban on nuclear power, an end to celebrating Tito’s birthday, and rights for gay people and for conscientious objectors to military service. Even mutterings about independence, although rare, are heard. “It’s like a war between Slovenia and Belgrade,” reports Mita Mersol, an editor at Delo, the largest Slovene daily. “We used to censor ourselves about such sensitive subjects as the army and Tito. Now anything is printed — even if it is slanderous.” Pacifists and Feminists Outraged military leaders have begun challenging liberal Slovene Communists. In 1971 former President Tito sacked Slovene leaders, and rumors have spread that the army is planning a similar coup to cut short the present Slovene Spring. Two Mladina journalists who specialized in military af- fairs were arrested and convicted late last month of handling confidential army documents. But when the journalists were released from jail pending appeal, a crowd of 10,000 hailed them as heroes. Mladina meanwhile, has kept on publishing, and top-ranking Slovene Communists continue to support the publication’s right to free expression. “We need a competition of ideas, a pluralism of ideas,” explained Peter Bekes, director of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism in Ljubljana.” Pluralism in a one-party state is hard to achieve. But over the past few years unofficial opposition groups have emerged with particularly strong support from youth. They started by protesting a government attempt to ban punk music. Now their numbers include ecologists, pacifists, feminists, and gays. Explains Tamas Mastnak, an opposition activist: “The idea is to create a ‘civil society,’ a sphere of social criticism independent of the state authorities. Society should be able to put limits, to control the power of the state.” Such notions would surely shock Gorbachev. But comparisons can be drawn between Slovenia and his own Baltic republics. Like the Balts Slovenes are proud of their Western heritage. And like the Balts, they say they are being dragged down by less developed regions. “If anything, grievances in the Baltic countries are worse than ours,” says Mersol, the editor of Delo. “We Slovenes are Slavs and want to stay inside Yugoslavia, while the Balts hate the Russians and are heading for secession.” In short, what makes Slovenia work may only precipitate a disaster in the Soviet Union. "Perestroika faces great difficulties,” says Mersol. “I wouldn’t bet on it.” Bill Echikson reports on Eastern Europe from his base in Paris. ‘IT PAYS TO BE INDEPENDENT d: sP NDEPENDENT AVINGS BANK • 6 Month to 60 Month Certificates $1,000.00 Minimum.
