Danes nam liturgija ponuja pouk o življenju v skupnosti. Evangeljski
odlomek govori o odnosu do brata, ki je nekaj zagrešil, in potem, pozneje, odnosu v molitvi: o zelo zahtevnih odnosih, da bi mogli biti povezani
v molitvi. To je vsekakor vedno sodobna vsebina, kajti življenje v skupnostih pogosto zaznamujejo napetosti med njihovimi člani.
Problem, na katerega je pokazal Jezus, je pravzaprav pri bratu, ki je
nekaj zagrešil. Besedilo tu ni povsem jasno. Vsekakor pa je odlomek veliko bolj razumljiv, če govori o krivdi, ki se je zgodila »vpleteni« osebi: »Če
ti je brat storil krivico, pojdi in ga opomni - med teboj in njim samim.«
V tovrstnih okoliščinah so mogoča zelo različna ravnanja. Prvo je
maščevanje, ki pa je v evangeljskem odlomku izključeno. Druge vrste
ravnanje je molk a evangelij tudi tega ne priporoča, ker to povzroča
nevšečnosti, kajti povzročena žalitev, ki ostane v srcu, rojeva odzive,
tudi nezavedne, in ti so zelo negativni.
Prvo berilo nam govori, da mnogokrat ne smemo molčati, temveč
moramo pogumno spregovoriti. Stara zaveza še priporoča: »Ne sovraži
svojega brata v svojem srcu; odkrito posvari svojega bližnjega, da si
zaradi njega ne nakoplješ greha!« Jezus govori o istem, dodaja pa, da je
treba biti diskreten, da ne bi grajali brata vpričo vseh: »Pojdi in ga posvari na štiri oči.« Zaradi bratske ljubezni, da ne bi jbrata javno osramotil; spravo je potrebno iskati zelo diskretno.
Potem nadaljuje: »Če te posluša, si pridobil svojega brata.« Tu lahko
vidimo, da je namen opominjanja nekaj povsem pozitivnega: ne gre, da
bi zahtevali popravljanje, temveč da bi na novo vzpostavili resnično
bratske odnose, povezanost, sporazum. Na tak način se pridobi brata, ki
bi bil sicer morda izgubljen.
Vendar Jezus predvidi tudi možnost, da brat ne sprejme opomina, ne
prizna krivde in noče na novo vzpostaviti bratskih odnosov. Tedaj predvidi drugi korak, ki je tudi zelo diskreten: »Če pa te ne posluša, vzemi s
seboj še enega ali dva, da se vsa zadeva ugotovi po izjavi dveh ali treh
prič.« Lahko občudujemo Gospodovo diskretnost. Mi se namreč takrat,
ko smo užaljeni, namesto da bi se pogovorili s človekom, ki nas je razžalil, pogosto obračamo k drugim in obtožujemo tega, ki nas je razžalil,

govorimo slabo o njem in mu s tem jemljemo dobro
ime. Jezus pravi, da je treba je govoriti s tistim, ki nas
je razžalil, šele potem, če nas ne posluša, pa se z njim
pogovoriti pred eno ali dvema pričama, ki lahko podpreta naš poskus sprave in pomagata bratu, da spozna
svojo zmoto in se odpove vprašljivemu obnašanju.
Samo takrat, pravi Jezus, ko nam tudi drugi poskus
ne uspe, se zatečemo h krščanskemu občestvu: »Če jih
ne posluša, povej Cerkvi.« Tu obstaja upanje, da bi se
na pritisk skupnosti grešnik vendar zavedel svoje krivde in se odpovedal svojemu trmastemu vztrajanju.
»Če pa tudi Cerkve ne posluša, naj ti bo kakor pogan in cestninar.« To je zadnja možna rešitev poskusa
sprave, zelo žalosten izid, vendar pa kljub temu odstira dejstva: ni več nikakršnega bratskega odnosa, s tem
človekom ni mogoče nadaljevati nobenega razmerja.
V vsem tem opazimo Jezusovo skrb za bratske odnose v skupnosti. V naših skupnostih velikokrat ugotavljamo napetosti, zato je treba vedno iskati zdravila
- in Jezus nam ponuja, da pristopamo z veliko.
Gospod vztraja glede potrebnosti sprave, kajti to,
kar počenjamo na zemlji, bo vplivalo tudi na to, kar bo
v nebesih. Naša dejanja so izvršena na zemlji, vendar
imajo odsev v nebesih. Zato nosimo zelo veliko odgovornost. Če z naklonjenostjo sprejmemo Jezusovo besedo, bomo z veseljem izvrševali stvari, ki so resnično
dokončno učinkovite, in bomo srečni, da smo uresničili
res nekaj pomembnega.
Glede molitve je Jezus rekel, da je molitev, ki jo
opravljamo sami, manj učinkovita kot molitev v skupnosti. Skupna molitev je učinkovitejša prav zato, ker
izpolnjujejo željo nebeškega Očeta, da bi se vsi njegovi
otroci ljubili med seboj. Ta velika želja se uresničuje
takrat, ko se nekaj ljudi poveže v molitvi, da bi bili edini v prošnji k nebeškemu Očetu.
Skupna molitev pa ima še en privilegij - posebno
navzočnost Gospoda Jezusa. Jezus je na poseben način
navzoč v evharistiji, vendar je tudi tam, kjer je skupnost, prežeta v veri vanj. S svojo ljubeznijo nas napolnjuje zato, da moremo ljubiti Boga, vendar pa tudi, da
moremo ljubiti vsakogar izmed svojih bratov.
V drugem berilu nam Pavel govori o ljubezni do
bližnjega, ki je v polnosti izpolnitev postave. Če kristjan res ljubi, ni treba, da se obremenjuje z zapovedmi,
kajti izpolnil jih bo, ne da bi na to mislil.

Jesus teaches us to try to resolve our
differences, knowing that he is always
among us.
“Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your
neighbour.”

A story is told about a Roman nobleman
who died, leaving enormous debts that he
had successfully concealed during his lifetime.
When the estate was put up for auction, Caesar Augustus instructed his agent to buy the
man’s pillow. When some expressed surprise
at the order, he explained, “That pillow must
be particularly conducive to sleep, if its late
owner, in spite of all his debts, could sleep on
it.”
While this little story might make us laugh,
being in debt is a serious affair. It creates
stress and leaves many people feeling vulnerable and afraid. Few of us with any sense of
responsibility would be able to sleep well at
night if we were in serious financial debt. We
might also find it emotionally and spiritually
difficult if we owe a debt of forgiveness and
healing to another person. Our three readings

Matthew speaks in today’s Gospel of how we might
win back our brother or sister, should there be a conflict
between us. Matthew is offering us a path to reconciliation and healing. In reality, we will all, at one time or
another, be in disagreement with others, and possibly
with family members. Matthew offers us an opportunity
to find a different and better way of healing and forgiveness.

or having responsibility for, our brothers and
sisters.

Gospel Teaching
Ezekiel, in today’s first reading, gives us the
typical image of an Old Testament prophet and
preacher. He warns his listeners about sin and
judgement, and brings their attention to the
wickedness around them. Throughout the Old
Testament we can see many times that the
prophets offer harsh judgements against the
people of Israel as they stray from the path God
has laid out for them. In essence, what the God
of Israel wants is for all to be saved and return to
the path of goodness and right.
In the second reading, Paul says, in his letter
to the Romans, that love is the only debt worth
incurring. It is the only thing that “cannot hurt
your neighbour”. This is a recurring theme with
Paul: elsewhere, in his letter to the Galatians,
Paul writes, “the whole of the Law is summarised
in a single command: Love your neighbour as
yourself.” We can hear the same theme in Ephesians: “follow Christ by loving as he loved you”.

The threat the prophet Ezekiel speaks of is not external. It is internal. This call to healing and forgiveness
is a personal call to each one of us. It is an invitation to
look inwards and to seek what separates us from the
love of God and our neighbour. Likewise, when Paul
invites us to take on the “debt of mutual love”, we
might ask: how can we do this? The answer could be
found in the first letter of St Paul to the Christians at
Corinth. Here Paul advises them that “Love is always
patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not
take offence, and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth; it is
always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure
whatever comes. Love does not come to an end.”
Such an attitude of love is surely the backdrop to
approaching those who hurt or wrong us. If we live
from these principles of love, we will desire not only our
own healing, but also a restoration of our relationship
with our brother or sister. In seeking to live out the
message of our readings today, we might ask ourselves:
what do we do when we see someone straying from
the path of faith? Do we shrug our shoulders and say,
“That’s their choice”, or do we try to win them back
with love and understanding? Equally, what do we do
when we are hurt by someone close to us? Do we ruminate on the hurt done to us, or do we seek to win back
those who have hurt us by adopting a loving approach?
As “love is the one thing that cannot hurt [our] neighbour,” let us try to be more loving and to offer words of
love and healing to those we meet this week.

SLOVENSKI PARK
Na zadnji »Long weekend« v letošnjem
letu smo se zbrali ob 1h popoldne k daritvi
svete maše v Slovenskem parku. Tokrat smo
imeli srečo, da je bilo lepo vreme in smo se
zbrali v senci dreves pri kapelici. Pri sveti maši
sva somaševala z gospodom Romanom Travarjem, lazaristom. Pred leti je bil kaplan pri
Brezmadežni v Torontu, zdaj pa je prišel na
kratek obisk.
Hvala vsem, ki ste se udeležili svete maše,
pri njej sodelovali z branjem in petjem, pripravili in okrasili pri kapelico. Hvala Jožetu Razpotniku, ki je poslikal in poskrbel, da se je tudi
dobro slišalo.

The St. Joseph Society hosted their 27th annual bocce ball
tournament on September 9, 2023. The morning started dry,
and we finished the event wet, but we didn't let the light rain
stop our tradition. We would like to thank the following
teams for participating: 1st Place Team Skerl 2nd Place Team
Benc 3rd Place Team Horvat 4th Place Team Ferletič. 43
friends gathered together in the Villa basement for our traditional kranjska lunch.
St. Joseph Society would like to thank Heidy and Clark
Novak who together worked hard to resurface our bocce
courts in time for our annual tournament. We would also like
to thank Fr. Drago for all his assistance including taking and
printing pictures for the teams. We are grateful to Marianne
Skerl and Linda Novak for helping to prepare lunch and making sure no guest was thirsty. The bocce ball tournament
funds collected ($300 ) are being donated to the parish to go
towards the OHOS campaign. Thank you to everyone who
came out to play bocce ball and enjoy a lunch among friends.
The quote of the day goes to Sandy Ferletic: "We are not
here to win or lose, it is a chance to have fun, see friends and
have a kranjska". We look forward to gathering again in 2024.

Že skoraj jesenska sobota, 9. septembra 2023 - vsaj glede na vreme in temperaturo +17 stopinj, počasi je mrščilo iz megle, štirih ekip igralcev pa vreme ni ustavilo. Veselo so se podali v tekmovanje na lepo urejenem balinišču, z novim peskom, ki so ga ta teden položili delavci Novak Landscaping. Za konec pa so se igralci in gledalci
zbrali v prostorih društva, kjer so podelili priznanje zmagovalni skupini, se podkrepili, odžejali in družili. Hvala
Petru Novaku in odboru sv. Jožefa za dobro organizacijo.
