Letalski napadi so tokrat bolj uspešni in bolj boleči, ker Severni Vietnam nima možnosti škode naglo popraviti. Velike sile, ZDA, ZSSR in L.R. SECOND CLASS POSTAGE PAID AT CLEVELAND, OHIO «^|gJiL.83 No. 119 Friday,'Jungle,T972_ Cilj politične emigracije II. V nji so videli izpolnitev svojega poslanstva. Kakšna misijonarka in gorenjska grča! Aids Slovene Aged Home by MARY KOMOROWSKI A mile long exciting big parade, starting from St. Joseph’s High School, and marching down gaily decorated E. 185th St., with colorful balloons flying overhead, kicked off the United Slovenian Society’s huge benefit Carnival for the Slovene Home for the Aged Building Fund, on Sunday, May 28, at 1 p.m. Over 40 units marched and rode in this spectacular parade, led by the fine 120 piece St. Joseph’s High School Band, while thousands of people lined the avenue, v/atching, cheering, clapping, and taking pictures. It was the largest parade in Slovenian history! Participating were Sheriff Kreiger’s men, and civic dignitaries Cleveland Mayor Ralph J. Perk, Council President and Ward 23 Representative Edmund Turk, with Polka Ambassador of WXEN-FM and President of United Slovenian Society Tony Petkovšek, Jr., Judge August Pryatel, Judge Francis Talty, Congressman Charles Vanik, Customs Collector John Kovacic, State Senator Anthony Novak, all the family of County Auditor George V. Voinovich on their familiar bikes. Also Euclid’s Mayor Harry Knuth and his cabinet and councilmen, representatives of many Slovenian National Homes of greater Cleveland, also many Veteran’s Organizations, with their flags flying, high school and elementary school bands, pretty cheer leaders and majorettes, numerous polka bands playing, fraternal groups and about 12 singing societies. MIKE TELICH, chairman of the building fund, was in the last. car. Boy, you should have seen the big smile on his face! Cecilia Valencie sang the national anthem. Over 8,000 attended the two day event which netted $14,000. John Pestotnik was general chairman. Today’s singers sound like they want to cough up their lungs! by JACOB STREKAL The beginning of my participation in culture was with the organizing of the singing club Zorislava in 1922, in Strumbley’s Hall on E. 222 St., near St. Clair. They also had picnics there surrounded by vineyards in the backyards. Mr. Viktor Lisjak, who is still living in Montville, Ohio, was the Chorus Director. Other members whom I vaguely recall were Joe Ceglar, now in Florida, Joe Glavan, Jerry Pengal, Felix Drenik, Witt Omahen, Conrad Floss, Anton Pus-nar, Joe Macarol, Anton Cerne and mony others. Mr. Lisjak played on the piano key accordion. He was an excellent teacher and patient instructor. The first compositions he taught were “Lepo mi poje črni kos,” “Barčica”, etc. He would never allow a singer to go to the extreme of his voice. He said singing is a pleasure, not a chore! The voice should be used, not abused! Today there are many qualified singers with pride in their talent, while a few we hear every day sound like they want to cough up their lungs! They don’t sing with the pleasure that the songs were written for. That is quite a contrast from the real Slovenian culture. I hope this article will lead the “throaty” Slovenian singers to constructive improvement in their voice talent. Not to sing only to make dollars, but to sing for its pleasure. Just the way Mr. Lisjak taught me over 50 years ago. AM6P1CAH IN SPIRIT Kumm in unchias« ot&v »j reft lidca i SLOVENIAN M0RNIN9 NSWSPAPOI JAMES V. JAGGS STREKAL PUT STATE INCOME TAX ON NOVEMBER BALLOT 1 invite all tax payers to sign the petition place the State Income Tax on the November Ballot. This tax I believe was unnecessary. It ^as delayed for a long time by the Republi-Can legislators. I think it is being used by the Democrats t° purchase welfare votes, which is increases about 25% per year. We Slavic minority are the victims and tax slaves. We vote for change, but never it, as some of the politicians speak from both sides of their mouth while whistling from the middle. Hov/ much did the government help the frimigrants at the turn of the century? They carne to America without any funds, or knowledge of the English language. They deeded no training to get employment, they talked to the employment office, and com-Poted for their jobs; they did not expect the Mailman to bring them their check. If the immigrant was on charity or re-ieL it was considered a disgrace. They felt they. were stealing from the government. Many years ago some politicians relied on labor’s vote, today, some seek welfare’s ballot X. Some organized labor has made specialists out of the work force. Some of those workers have become too independent, making the employer only the payee. Those employers have no guarantee that the specialist will produce enough for his keep. It has been said that if he complains they will put him out of business. It is not unusual to see a $10 an hour plumber, or a $12 an hour electrician drive a cheap foreign car, or live in public housing. Often he does this to support the politician who in turn will often tax to death the worker who does not make a high wage. Vote against high taxes! Come to my office at 405 E. 200 St in Euclid to sign the petition to put the Ohio state income tax on the November ballot. Let the voters have a chance to say yes or No! ANTHONY GARBAS The old faithful were present for the May 23 St. Clair Business Assn, meeting. Of the 48 contacted, only 6 showed up! We assume some had good excuses, but surely not all of them! The Association exists for all of us. But why must the few shoulder the full burden? And to put the topper to it, the dedicated few are referred to as a clique! Why can’t we give one hour or so of our time once a month? Some give much more than that for the good of the neighborhood. ! * We will again sponsor a full baseball team in the Perry Boys League. The membership approved the $100 expenditure as a commitment to the youth of our community. * The Association has agreed to a trial tree planting on St. Clair Avenue under the supervision of Ralph Veverka, Commissioner of Shade Trees, City of Cleveland. Hopefully a full planting can take place in the Fall. Remember when we were known as the Forest City? Details on business commitment have yet to be worked out. However, we have a pledge from the Administration to cooperate to the fullest extent possible. * Jerry Krakowski of the Civic Aid Patrol gave the May gathering of the St. Clair Business Assn, a progress report. Strengths and weaknesses were underlined. The Patrol has been actively engaged in checking...outt. business facilities at night as time permits. Organizational restructuring under the auspices of SCBA was brought out. Those not in attendance missed a very good report by Krakowski. The Civic Aid Patrol is deserving of the wholehearted support of the entire business community. * Dr. Garbas gave a report on the progress being made by the joint committees of the Little Europe Festival. We had an entry in the E. 185 St. parade on May 28. Appropriate signs highlighted our festival days coming up on July 29 and 30. Garbas underscored the need for volunteers to man the booths at our festival. She was a noble soul and served as an inspiration to me and others to better themselves! She was born Jan. 24, 1915, a daughter of Slovenian immigrant parents Anna (Sterbenc) and Anton Ponikvar, in String-town, near Leadville, Colo. Theirs was a good home where learning, culture and faith in God were paramount. Hers was a keen mind, and she had a magnificent singing voice. Her stature was slim and graceful. She grew to love reading, singing, and dancing. She had many friends who shared her exuberance for living. Illness was no stranger to this good lady. As early as 1927 she had a mysterious sickness which caused chills, fever and severe swelling of joints. When doctors were unable to help, her mother provided a cure. Later it was learned she had suffered rheumatic fever, which did irreparable harm to her heart. In 1933 she graduated from Leadville High School and entered the University of Colorado where she wanted to study for a nursing career. But the depression closed the school. The presence of nearly 1,000 American youth in foreign jails on drug charges has prompted a public service advertising campaign to warn U.S. residents to avoid drug-law violations while visiting other countries. Travelers should be warned that drug laws in other countries are generally strict and rigidly enforced. And some countries have no bail system. Pre- trial detention in some countries is lengthy, even months go by sometimes. A few areas do not permit appeals from the lower courts. Embassy officials can do little once an American is charged with drug law violations in another country. Gerald N. Kurtz of the Public Health Services, notes there seems to be a wide misunderstanding among American youths about foreign drug laws and their enforcement. He warns that apparent lax enforcement is an illusion. He said this misconception is encouraged sometimes by what seems to be widespread use of drugs overseas and the easy availability of mind-altering substances in many foreign countries. And he added that many drug dealers play a double game by tipping off police as to Americans to whom they have made drug sales. In this way, they get money from the user and the police. American narcotics agents, Kurtz pointed out, have told him this is a common practice in North Africa. Kurtz visited American youths in jail in Spain> Italy, Greece, and Iran. Called the “Shoppers Shuttle” and designed to attract lunch-hour shoppers as well as house-wives, the program will make it easier for riders to use the Downtown Loops by keying on the color orange — the buses will be painted orange and the Loop bus signs will be bigger and also painted orange. From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., CTS patrons can save on a second Loop bus ride by paying the regular 25 cents fare when boarding for the first ride and 15 cents for the second ride coupon. The coupon will be orange, too, and must be used the same day. The Shoppers Shuttle promotion will run thru September. It will be in effect on Saturdays as well as weekdays. CTS Marketing Director Thompson Nooner said special information signs will explain to new riders how the Shoppers Shuttle links the major downtown activity centers — Public Square, Erieview, the E. 9th financial district and Cleveland State University — with shops, stores, parking lots, cultural attractions, offices, and other CTS service. There will be no changes in the routes or schedules of the Loop system. Can financially ailing CTS afford a fare reduction? “If we can attract three additional riders each trip, we will break even,” Nooner said. “But the hope is to attract more riders than that.” MKm ;' t: The members of St. Vitus Catholic Youth Organization will present a play, Thornton Wilder’s “By The Skin Of Our Teeth.” It is a dramatization of man’s fight to be a human being. The performance will be held on Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Vitus Auditorium on Glass Ave. at E. 62 St. Adults, $1.25; children 75r,1. But her greatest talent was with a crochet hook. She created hundreds of beautiful works of art: scarves, doilies, pillow cases, tablecloths, and altar cloths. The young couple built a good life, rearing their one child, a daughter born in 1941. But severe illness was always near this gracious lady.In 1961 she was told to have a heart valve opened or else... At that time those operations were still quite uncommon. But she had no choice and underwent the operation. It was like a miracle. She regained her youthful energy and looks! In 1969, however, she took a turn for the worse. The doctors could do no more. I remember June 23, 1971. It was a typical day. A letter ma had written the day before arrived. It was full of good humor. But late in the afternoon I put some pork chops on to fry. The telephone rang. It was my father, and he told me through sobs, “Prepare yourself, your mother just died!” She who had given me life, who had guided me thru the difficulties of growing up, was gone from earth! My grief was unbearable. I only ask God that I can be as good as my mother — so completely devoted to family and God! She is dearly loved and will be remembered by all of us forever. Please remember a great lady in your prayers. * * HOW’S YOU What occurred where?
