Farmers’ work is the most hectic as he bundles up the hay and readies the land for winter. Our October scene is familiar to adults for the meaning it brings to Fall; and to the children who see only ghosts and goblins hiding behind the sheaves. Dates to Remember . . . Menart ABOUT YOU Miss America, teenage variety, has been the subject of much scrutiny lately. And here are some surprising results! The average subteen stands I’ 6", weighs 87 pounds, gets $1.15 weekly allowance and is one of the five million females born during the Middle Forties. Right now, she likes Calypso music, is learning the cha-cha-cha, wears chopped-up bangs and longish hair, prefers jeans and an old shirt, sports buttons as big as her head proclaiming the name of her current idol and sinks 25"/r of her income into records. She's being known to have “an understanding” with as many as 15 members of the opposite sex in six months. Ah yes, she’s truly emancipated. If she's extra lucky and has wise parents, she's a member of the S.W.U. Junior I)ept. There, she finds the joys and confidence of leadership and fraternal devotion. Aren’t you glad you're a member of S.W.U.? A LETTER FROM A JUNIOR Forest City, Pa. Dear Editor, I am a member of S.W.U. Branch #7 in Forest City. My mother, grandmother, aunts and cousins are members too. We enjoy reading the magazine “Dawn”, hope others do also. In the last. issue you requested juniors to write to you about their vacation, perhaps win a nice prize, so decidfvl to tell you how I spent mine. During the summer months I enjoyed myself playing with my friends, had some Baton Twirling Practice also —helped my mother around the house, ran errands for home and others— helped take care of the little cousins —I have no sister or brother—sure wish 1 had! I spent one week camping with the Girl Scouts, enjoyed every minute, swimming—arts and crafts—even got Debra, a mere 15 mo's old, proved herself unwittingly on the side of the Ijord during her 1st trip to church with her parents. Naturally, she fussed a bit as any normal child would. But mom and dad were able to keep her under control until a couple behind tried to leave unobtrusively. Debbie’s cries of “bye, bye," brought the couple, red-faced, back to their pew. Mark Beltaire, Detroit Free Press. caught in a storm while swimming, only got a little wetter. When the huckleberries and black berries ripened I picked them for home and sold some, earned some spending money which always comes handy. Must not forget to tell you I spent one weekend in Philadelphia, my parents and I took in some movies and shopped in the stores—there are so many stores in larger cities—a girl likes this—she always manages to get something nice, and how time flys? It takes a lot of money, but it isn’t too often. Now that vacation days are over, I will be kept busy with my studies, will try my best, learn all I can—they say, “no one can ever take it away.” Hope all the other girls and boys enjoyed their vacation, and let us hear from them. Regards to all—as ever, your Junior member, Elaine Glavich October Oct. 12 — Columbus Day Dwight D. Elsenhower, 34th President, born Oct. 14, 1890. Theo. Roosevelt, 26th President, bom Oct. 27, 1856.
