Današnji odlomek ima tri dele. Prva dva sta očitna in temeljna: luč in voda sta božja simbola v najbolj odličnem pomenu besede. To simboliko predstavlja naša liturgija, ko praznujemo in častimo »Gospoda našega Jezusa Kristusa«. (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2005 - Gianjranco Ravasi) 4TH Sunday of Lent Response: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want! First Reading 1 Samuel 16:1. 6-7. 10-13 God gives Samuel a special insight to choose Jesse's son David. Second Reading Ephesians 5:8-14 God has brought us out of darkness so we can live in the light of the Lord. Gospel John 9:1-41 A blind man is healed and, in the face of opposition, comes to faith by seeing Jesus as his saviour. "You are looking at him; he is speaking to you." Illustration There are at least two ways of thinking about how we see the world. The first may involve going to the optician to have our eyes checked. We undergo tests to see if our physical sight and can be improved. But the second way transcends physical sight. In today's first reading Samuel the prophet visits Jesse to choose one of his sons to be anointed as king. He sees seven sons but rejects them all because he does not judge by physical appearance. God gives him spiritual insight, which looks to the heart and enables him to choose David. Easter night can show us two different ways of seeing. The Vigil Mass begins in darkness. After the new fire is lit, the light is passed through the church and people can see as the physical darkness is dispelled. Then, in the light of the paschal candle, the readings, from Genesis to the Gospel, are read 138 | VESTNI K 2020 aloud. The readers can see the words in the lection-ary, but do they understand their meaning? They only make sense in the light of Christ. He gives us the spiritual sight to understand them and see how they all point forward to Christ himself. Our physical sight is given by the candles but our spiritual sight is given by Christ. He gives us a way of looking at the world which we call faith. But how do we come to faith? Gospel Teaching We see the process of coming to faith dramatised in today's Gospel. Jesus is in Jerusalem for the feast of Tabernacles. As part of this festival the Jews carried water from the Pool of Siloam to the Temple, which was illuminated by the blaze of four sets of great candles. Against that background Jesus claimed that he was the light of the world. Today the Gospel begins with a healing of a blind man. Jesus puts a mud paste on his eyes and tells him to wash it off in the Pool of Siloam. The man's physical sight is restored. This creates a stir. The man is interrogated about the miracle. When asked who performed it, he gives a factual answer, "The man called Jesus." But the miracle divides the Pharisees. Some recognise God's hand in the healing but others see Jesus as a sinner for breaking the sabbath. The man is put under pressure, begins to assert himself and recognises that Jesus must be a prophet. The Pharisees check out his parents to see if he was really born blind but they are afraid; they acknowledge their son, and that he was blind, but won't say any more. So back to the man the Pharisees go. They want him to deny the miracle. Now the man becomes bolder and says, in effect, "Jesus has given me my sight, and surely God doesn't listen to sinners?" But they are blind to the facts and cast out the man. Finally Jesus returns to the scene and challenges the man, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" When the man wants to know who he is, Jesus tells him that he can see him now. But it is not just physical sight; he now has the spiritual insight to acknowledge Jesus in faith: "Lord, I believe," he says, and he worships him. Application This Gospel reading is especially appropriate in Lent because, on Easter night, throughout the world, hundreds of thousands of catechumens will profess their faith and be baptised. They will receive the light of Christ. We notice in today's Gospel how the blind man only comes to faith gradually and in the face of persecution and abuse. But at the same time the light of Christ shows up the darkness of unbelief. Some of the Pharisees cannot open their eyes to a new revelation. The parents of the blind man sit on the fence and are unwilling to speak. It is not only those preparing for baptism who can recognise themselves in this account of the blind man. Lent is the time to examine our faith. We can easily be drawn to the darkness of unbelief by the pressures of a world which even persecutes the Church in many countries. We may be like the parents who want to keep quiet. Or we may be like the unbelieving Pharisees who turn from the light. Easter offers us the opportunity to go beyond our physical sight and to see the world with the eyes of faith and, like the blind man, recognise Jesus as the light of the world. VESTNI K 2020 | 139 BISHOP OF HAMILTON Dear Friends, This is Tuesday, March 17, 2020 — the day after Masses and other programs were cancelled within the Diocese of Hamilton. The advice of public health professionals, concern for the health of Chancery employees and their families, for Priests, Deacons, and parishioners, caused us to declare the radical shutdown. Just when we need Him most, we cannot celebrate Mass as a community of faith — hear His Word proclaimed, eat the Bread of Life. This is quite a Lenten fast. We hunger for the food that satisfies the longing of our heart — the source and summit of the Christian life. We hunger because we care for the greater community — those whose lives are at risk if they catch the dreaded virus, those who already have it and don't yet know, and the children — born and unborn. Yesterday I heard birds singing — a beautiful and refreshing sound after a winter without. The sound lifted my spirits! One bird, then another — harbingers of Spring — a promise of happier times ahead! Let us do the same — lift drooping spirits by kind words and thoughtful actions, by reaching out to neighbors alone in their homes, perhaps in need of assistance and care, certainly needing cheery voices, some good news, and a small break from the tedium of being at home alone. Know that Priests of the Diocese are celebrating Masses — praying for parishioners, for the sick, for the dead — as we always do — now without the gathered assembly. The people are not forgotten — in fact, you are remembered now more than ever. Many years ago, when I was Bishop in Labrador, I was aware that parishioners in smaller more isolated villages did not have access to the Eucharist for several months at a time. It is still the reality there today. We can learn from them. Pray the Rosary — it is a powerful prayer and a reflection on mysteries of our faith. Read the daily Scripture readings. Watch the Pope's Mass from Casa Santa Marta — live-streamed every day — or watch one of the other televised Masses on local channels. "Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just! It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give You thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God." We repeat that little dialogue at every Mass. It is precisely what we must do now. During this time of trial, give thanks for the blessings we experience — the love of family and friends, the courage of healthcare and public health professionals, the availability of necessities to help us remain healthy, the bravery of those who are in quarantine or self-isolating, the awareness that we will get to the other side of this test and gather once again to sing and pray our thanksgiving together! Sincerely in Christ and Mary Immaculate, (Most Rev.) Douglas Crosby O.M.I., Bishop of Hamilton 140 | VESTNI K 2020 DIOCESE OF HAMILTON_ March 18,2020 Dear Reverend Monsignor, Dear Reverend Father, I am writing to clarify several issues that have been raised following Bishop Crosby's Directives of March 17th regarding our pastoral practices in view of the COVID-19 Virus. MASSES All public celebrations of Mass and other devotions are suspended. All churches (including Adoration Chapels) are to remain closed at all times until further notice. It is not permitted to have the church open even for a few hours each day for prayer. Where it is possible to stream Mass, this is to be done and parishioners are to be notified of this as well as televised Masses (Vision TV: Sunday 8:00 a.m.; Monday — Friday 8:00 a.m. & 12:00 noon; Saturday 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Salt + Light: Monday-Saturday 6:30 am. 9:30 a.m. (with Pope), 11:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.; Sunday 11:00 a.m. & 10:30 p.m.). In addition to celebrating Sunday Mass privately, all Priests are encouraged to celebrate Mass privately each day for the intentions of their parishioners, for the medical personnel assisting the sick, and for an end to the COVID-19 outbreak. PRAYER AT HOME In this time of fasting from the Eucharist, parishioners should be encouraged to pray for other parishioners and for all those whose lives are being affected by the virus. The Rosary, prayerful reading of Sacred Scripture and other devotions are recommended. Pastors are encouraged to use whatever social media at their disposal to communicate with their parishioners. FUNERALS Funeral Masses are not permitted at this time; visitation and vigil services at funeral homes may take place according to the decision of local funeral homes and families of the deceased. However, Priests may, but are not required to, visit or offer prayers at the funeral home. CONFESSIONS Regarding the Sacrament of Reconciliation, no scheduled Confessions are permitted. The Sacrament may be celebrated by appointment provided that social distance can be maintained. The Sacrament of Reconciliation may always be celebrated in danger of death. BAPTISMS Although Baptisms may be celebrated privately, it is recommended that they be postponed until a later date. COMMUNION The Eucharist is not to be taken to parishioners who are homebound at this time. Similarly, it is not possible to bring the Eucharist to Senior Residences and Nursing Homes. SCRUTINIES His Excellency Bishop Douglas Crosby dispenses all the Elect from the celebration of the Scrutinies. HOSPITAL VISITATION Visitation in hospitals is strictly limited. Further directives regarding hospital ministry will be forthcoming. HOLY WEEK & TRIDUUM CELEBRATIONS These will be addressed in a subsequent memo as we approach these days. Thank you for your attention to these updated directives in force in the Diocese of Hamilton. Let us continue to be united in prayer as we place our trust in God's providence during this pandemic. Naj zdravi na duši in telesu nenehno slavimo tvojo dobroto. Po Kristusu, našem Gospodu. Amen. 3) Preberemo evangelij dneva. 4) Nekaj časa premišljujemo ob Božji besedi (bodite pozorni na to, kaj vam govori in kakšne občutke prebuja v vas). 5) Zmolimo veroizpoved. 6) Sledi duhovno obhajilo. Pri maši sta pela slovenski in angleški zbor.
