ST. NICHOLAS’ FEASTDAY IS DEC. 6.
The first St. Nicholas lived in the 4th Century and has deeds of courage and kindness earned him after death the title of patron saint of children.
Slovenians have loved St. Nicholas for centuries and on his feastday, the giving of presents to all good children is the custom which is like Christmas in America. Then, on Dec. 25th, the family celebrates the birth of Christ as the holiest of days, in all its solemnity.
We still keep the custom of honoring St. Nick’s day by putting out a dish or in some places, >a stocking on the eve of Dec. 6th to see if it will be filled with goodies the next morning.
So, Happy St. Nicholas’ Day to Children of All Ages!

CHRISTMAS
N DAYS of old, God spoke to our forefathers at various times and in many ways through the prophets,
Isaias:
“A virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,
and His Name shall be called Emmanuel.”
"A child is born to us, a son is given to us;
on His shoulders is the scepter of royal power,”
“Royal power is Thine on the day of Thy birth in the splendor of holiness.”
Micheas:
"O Bethlehem of Juda,
from Thee shall come forth the Leader
Who shall rule my people Israel.”
Baruch:
“Jerusalem, arise and behold the Joy that comes to thee from Thy God.”
Now at last in these days, He has spoken to us through His Son, —
—The eternal and uncreated Divine Wisdom and Providence,
--the Lord Who swore His covenant with the Patriarchs and Moses,
—the Messias Whose coming was foretold by Isaias,
—the Divine Ruler of the Jewish nation,
—the God of Nature, manifested and symbolized by the sun, —the King of the Nations, the Cornerstone that joins Jew and Gentile,
—the God-man living among us as one of us,
—Who being far superior to the angels, has inherited a Name more excellent than theirs; for to which of the angels did God say, “Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten Thee?”
Our God and Savior, gentle and lovable, has appeared to us. The Crib is His throne. He is our amiable Lord, Whom we can approach in loving confidence, provided that we are men of good will. He has saved us by the purifying rebirth of Baptism and restored us by the Holy Spirit, Whom He has poured out on us in abundance, making us heirs of eternal life and justifying us by His grace.
The grace of God our Savior has appeared to all men, training us to reject ungodliness and worldly desires and to live temperately, by curbing our greed, our lust, and our pride; justly, by loving our neighbor in a spirit of peace and fairness; devoutly, by loving God and serving Him by dedication and obedience. So we look forward in blessed Hope to the glorious coming of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
For such a wonderful day given to mankind let us say with the mother the Church: “Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God that the new birth of Thine only-begotten Son in the flesh may set us free, who are held by the old bondage under the yoke of sin. Through Christ our Lord.” Merry Christmas to you all.

ALL SBOUT HER

I	met a lovely girl, who is charming beyond words and not only a credit to her profession, but to her heritage as well. She is Barbara Meister, the singing star of the hit musical show, The Sound of Music, which is now touring the midwest area with her in the leading role of Maria.
Barbara hails from Pueblo, Colorado, where she was bom and raised. Her grandmother, Mrs. Katherine Jerman, still keeps the home fires burning at 332 Michigan Ave. Her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Meister, who is well-known as a very talented pianist, is currently a student at Marycrest College at Davenport, Iowa, where she will earn her degree in music education this January. Here is an example of true Slovenian tenacity and courage, if it were ever seen!
The Jerman family is one where music has always prevailed, so from little on, Barbara was enveloped in the sound of music all about her. It is no wonder then, that she should develop into such a special talent of her own. Following her years at Marycrest where she, too, majored in music and won membership in a national honor society, Barbara’s career was launched by James Melton, who took her along with three other violinists on a tour of the U. S., Canada, plus a date at the Palladium in London. She not only played the violin, but sang and danced as well. In New York, she appeared with the New York City Opera Co. and sang on the TV Bell Telephone Hour and recalls with pride and some amusement the TV show with Groucho Marx, where she played a straight part as Yum Yum (The Mikado) to Groucho’s spoofing.
In the Salute to Richard Rodgers television show, she was heard by Mr. Rodgers himself, who found her to be perfect for the part in The Sound of Music, which was a hit on Broadway with Mary Martin in the top role. He had our Barbara perform in place of Martha Wright, the next leading lady in that show’s long run and immediately another star was born!
About that time, Barbara had to take a brief vacation from the theatre, however, to bring her little “Majesty" into the world as she and her husband, singer Ted Morrill fondly call baby Gregory. Greg is now a year old and is a blond, blue-eyed bundle of love.
The name Barbara Meister and the vivacious, sparkling girl the name implies soon came before the bright lights of the theatre again as she was asked to join the national company of the show in Chicago and take over the lead for the duration of the run, as well as the midwest tour.
So, that’s how Barbara came to Chicago and to the hearts of this writer and all who came to know her in the G months she played at the Shubert Theatre. As a

performer, she is tops — her singing is lilting and her acting very natural. She feels the part she plays and says herself: I am Maria! The story unfolds as she — the young governess — comes to the family of seven motherless children and transforms them into a loving, lighthearted family and herself into the epitome of womanhood.
Just for the sake of history, let me refer back to the early days of our S.W.U., when activity was centered on the drill teams and folk groups we had among our branches. In Pueblo, during the years of 1938-1916, one of the leaders in this movement to promote our Slovenian culture by way of singing and dancing was Mrs. Dorothy Meister, the president of Br. no. 87 and captain of the St. Mary’s Cadets. The group of cadets was very large and performed at hundreds of parades, exhibitions and the like. The branch prospered under her leadership and

It’s a show full of beautiful singing and entertaining for the entire family and leaves a lasting memory.
activity bloomed with drill team and branch functions. Mrs. Meister was also a member of the Supreme Youth Board all this time.
In 1938. the members of that branch held a special commemorative event at. which time our Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak, then the editor, was guest of honor and presented with the Golden Book of Merit. This was only one of a number of such line and important doings in Pueblo, which brought out the best in our young members. Mrs. Meister wrote many, many articles in Zarja, telling of the branch’s activities and here and there, Barbara Ann also participated with the other juniors.
Now we come back to the present and we see where not really so much has changed except that everyone
has grown both in age and in stature and that we can be still proud of the achievements of our friends, the Meisters.
Barbara will go oil to tour the nation in The Sound of Music; her mother will accomplish her goal in life, to be the proud bearer of her degree in music; grand mother, Mrs. Jerman will continue to live in the memories of the way she helped to instill the finest and truest Slovenian traditions in the hearts of her family, and we shall go on in the wonderful memory of a girl, who lights up like the star she is, whenever she speaks of her heritage and nationality. We love her and hope you enjoyed reading about the grand experience of meeting Barbara Meister.
CHICAGO’S SLOVENIAN DAY FESTIVAL IS MUSICAL FETE
The Slovenian Day Festival Sunday, October 14, at the New Lawndale Hall in Chicago, featured beautiful stars of stage and opera. Here on the photo are two of the celebrated guests — Miss Gloria Lind of the Metropolitan Opera Co., (left) and Miss Barbara Meister, star of the Sound of Music at the Shubert Theatre (right). In the center is Mrs. Corinne Leskovar who, with her husband, Lud, are directors of the Slovenian Radio Hour in Chicago and chairmen of the event. Miss Lind performed before an enraptured audience who applauded warmly for her renditions of operatic arias and Slovenian folk songs. Many Slovenian groups performed in song and dance. Guest groups were those of the Moravian Youth Organization, Serbian folklore group Gruza, and Polish I. Paderewski Chorus. Miss Meister delighted the audience with her description of her youth in her hometown of Pueblo, Colo., where her Slovenian family brought her up. During the program, presented before a capacity crowd of 1,500, Hon. Vito Marzullo, alderman of the 25th ward, greeted the crowd on behalf of Governor Kernel-and Mayor Daley. He said: “America has prospered because of the contribution of people who make up our city and state. The Slovenian groups, like many others,

pastor the sad news. Father Joseph Mohr responded by writing “Silent Night, Holy Night,” which Herr Gruber set to music. They sang the new song together at Christmas services . . . to guitar accompaniment! This was the origin of one of our best-loved hymns—in Oberndorf, Austria, 1818.
Church choirs still strive to recreate the first music of Christmas . . . angels singing “Glory to God in the Highest!” over Bethlehem . . . as reported in the Bible story of Christ’s birth.
Early Christians never took a fancy to the solemn chants of convents and monasteries . . . but St. Francis of Assisi raised their hearts and voices when he set religious themes to merry music in the 13th century!
People went home humming his sermons . . . and carols were born.
The word “carol” means dance in a ring. At first it described group singing and dancing in any festive season. For the last few hundred years, “carol” refers specifically to Christmas music, sacred or secular.
Italy, France, Germany and America have carol literature and traditions of their own. Early songs weren’t written down, they were carried by wandering minstrels and folk singers. They went through so many changes of word and melody . . . their creators probably wouldn’t recognize them today!
Medieval carols seem to have been written as scripts for religious drama. Vivid pictures in the verses move the listener from scene to scene . . . moods change from coarse humor to reverence as the story of the Nativity progresses. In one vigorous carol, shepherds respectfully give the Child of Bethlehem—” a bunch of cherries, a feathered songster and a tennis ball!”
Religious folk songs were often sung at holiday revels debasing the spirit of Christmas. Puritans—coming into power—frowned on such pagan excesses. They said festival music was sacriligious and dishonored God.
They outlawed Christmas.
A Puritan law of 1644 made December 25 a market day. Shops were required to remain open. Stiff fines . . . even jail sentences . . . awaited anyone caught “celebrating” Christmas. People obediently wore straight faces—and hummed merrily under their breath! Christmas music went underground.
"Broad sheets” were printed each year ... to keep texts alive with some accuracy. The law wasn't strictly enforced, children still sang from door to door, and neighbors gathered on Christmas Eve to chorus, “Love and Joy, come to you!” Rustics caroled, “with rough accent, irregular time and tunes learned by heart and not by book.”
The Restoration eventually let music back Into church.
Some 18th century sophisticates found folk songs too simple for their taste. Holiday spirits—even in cities —clamored for musical expression . . . and it was at this time that some of the noblest composers fashioned “respectable” Christmas music. Bach (Continued on page 238)
IN MEMORY OF THE OLD WOOD STOVE

Mrs. Jane Gorenz, member and former secretary of branch 1, Sheboygan, is an excellent baker. Her pastry is outstanding. For many seasons, she attended Creative Foods courses in the Vocational school, where she learned the latest tricks in baking and decorating. For Christmas, she delights me with a most welcome gift, a delicious Almond torte. The torte comes beautifully decorated and looks very festive.
The torte recipe is an old one. It was published in 1923 in a Slovenian Cook book “Slovenska Kuharica”, issued in Ljubljana, S'ovenia. Jane translated for us the European measurements.
Almond Torte
Ingredients:
12 egg yolks
11/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla 10 egg whites
2 cups sifted cake flour
H/2 cups finely ground almonds 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Beat egg yolks and sugar in mix-master for 10 minutes. Add vanilla. Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until stiff. Fold egg whites in the first mixture, add almonds and flour. Place in an ungreased Angel food tube pan and bake at 325° for about one hour. When cool, cut torte into one or two layers, then fill with the following filling.
FILLING
Ingredients:
% cup sweet cream
1 tablespoon corn starch 4 egg yolks
2 egg whites
1/2 cup unsalted butter Zi cup powdered sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup water
1/2 cup finely ground almonds
Part 1: — In double boiler warm up the cream, add corn starch moistened with 1 tablespoon milk. Cook slowly. When it thickens, add slightly beaten egg yolks and cook until thick. Cool. Part 2: — Cream butter with powdered sugar.
Part 3: — Boil water with granulated
Our children, much less grandchildren, barely remember the old wood stove, but when Fall brings its chilly winds, I am always warmed by the memory of our sturdy Universal Iron Range.
The huge stove possessed the longest wall of our old fashioned kitchen, when I moved into our new home as a bride. It needed a lot of space along with the hot water reservoir attached to it.
When I wanted a roaring fire, I pulled a metal bar in front and opened the damper in the pipe. The stove crackled and hissed and filled the room with glowing warmth. No modern stove could accomplish what the wood fire did.
In 1910, the iron range was a model of efficiency. With her polished black surface and nickel plated trim, she was a beauty. Once a week, she was given a dazzling shine with Black Joe stove polish. The nickel was washed with soap and water, then dried and polished.
We always had home made bread, potica, pies, cookies and coffee cake. Not having a stove thermometer, I knew when I put my hand into the
sugar until it spins a thread. Beat egg whites stiff. Pour hot syrup very slowly in a thin stream into beaten egg whites, beating constantly.
Part 4:	— Fold together all three
parts and fill the torte between, 011 top and sides. Sprinkle with almonds. Decorate with maraschino cherries. Make leaves from green gum drops or angelica. To make torte look fes-
oven, when it was exactly the right temperature for baking.
The range burned mostly wood, but when winter came with near zero weather, we banked the fire with coal. The ashes, shaken carefully from the grates, fell into a narrow ash can below. If the shaking was too vigorous, the grates dumped all their coals and then a new fire had to be started.
There were times when the warmth of the old stove was of great comfort. My son remembers having a bath in the wash tub in front of the open warm oven and my daughters think they can still smell the aroma of red apples they placed on top of the hot stove to warm and bake a little before they ate them.
The children were especially fond the old stove in winter. She warmed their cold, numb feet, dried their wet shoes and soggy mittens hung 011 a line behind the stove, where our cat also warmed herself. One cold spring, we brought into the kitchen our newly hatched chickens. Mother hen watched over her brood housed in a neat box beside the warm stove.
Yes, the old stove is gone and, gone with it is the tightly knitted family, gathered around the stove warming their hands and hearts . . .

It is most unfortunate that we could not have our State Convention this year. Br. no. 20, Joliet, 111., was to have the honors and commitment. Commitment summarizes best what I feel most necessary in all of our branches today. What is commitment? To commit oneself one must have a self. Who and what are we? What is it we believe in? Often we forget the greatest things; don’t take time to decide what we believe in. We are pushed and shoved in so many different directions. But, the answers are rewarding, if you follow through and decide: “This I believe is light.” We must sacrifice to achieve. You are not committed unless you fight and work for what you believe in — you have to give up something.
I urge all members to return to the spirit and letter of our S.W.U. constitution and by-laws. To join together for fun is a pleasure that soon leaves, but, to join together for a purpose gives life meaning. When you joined the S.W.U., did you commit yourself? Or, did you think only of what you would get out of it — not, “what have I to offer?” In giving ourselves we receive the most.
The 19G2 story has been told and we are looking into the future with the hope that 1963 will be a good year.
With your continuous loyalty and cooperation, I feel we have much to accomplish.
May this season bring you and your families the full happiness Christmas has to offer and may the New Year continue to add strength and meaning to the friendships we have built by working together.

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wise. — It is
that time of year again when our annual meeting will be held — the 3rd Sunday in December, the 16th at 2 p.m., instead of the usual 2nd Sunday meeting date.
Every good member should attend this important meeting to offer constructive suggestions. After the election of officers, awards will be presented to the lucky recipients who we name every year at this meeting. Prizes are also given for the attending members. Slides will be shown after the meeting of vtarious trips and parties during the year. Our chairman, Ruth Sheck, and cochairman, Mary Turk, wish to thank all our members for the well-attended card party which was a boost to our treasury. The gals had a nice time at this affair. Another grand event was the State Convention in Williard, Wis. which our members attended in good number.
Get well wishes to all our sick members and a wish that you will stay well. Happy birthday to all our members who have birthdays and anniversaries this month.
Our secretary, Margaret Fischer, flew to California to attend her son’s wedding. Congratulations to the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. James Fischer, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fischer and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Prisland.

No. 2, Chicago, III. — Hear Ye! Hear Ye! We have an important month in December! The Children's Christmas Party is on Sunday, Dec. 16th at the St. Stephen’s lower hall at 2 p.m. All our youngsters are invited and Santa Claus will have a surprise gift for each one. The mothers who come along with their children will enjoy it as much as the kiddies — as past parties have proven. Those with some special talent should be ready to perform in our traditional amateur show. The morning of Dec. 16th at the 10:30 a. m. Mass, our Branch will comemor-ate the memory of our deceased members and tribute the 36th Anniversary of Zveza.
The regular meeting night lor the branch is Dec. 13th and at that time we’ll celebrate with a little social and the usual Christmas Gift Tree. Bring along some item for exchange so it will be an interesting game.
The yearly meeting is always important, too, because it’s the time for election of officers and selection of the program of activities for the coming year. We have our summer excursions to discuss and the forthcoming national convention in 1964 which will be in Chicago.

No. 14, Euclid, Ohio — Our November meeting fell on election day again, but we spent most of the business meeting discussing our November 11th dinner. We were all happy to see out-recording secretary, Antonia Sustar, back after a 3 month trip to Yugoslavia.
“Thank You” to all our members who donated their time in the kitchen, serving, and in the bar room for making our anniversary banquet the success that it was. We are also thankful to all our members, their families and friends who attended; we know they enjoyed themselves, and were grateful for a Sunday dinner they didn’t have to prepare.
Christmas is only a few weeks away and most of us are busy preparing for the day. Our December meeting will again be followed by our annual Christmas party at which we exchange $1 gifts. To all our members, especially the sick and bedridden, I wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Holy New Year.
We received word that our member. Sister Mary Leksan was in Lake County Hospital. She was visited by our members and presented with a small gift. We pray that you are well on the road to recovery.
A darling little granddaughter, Catherine Mary, was presented to Sister Agatha Zeitz on August 12th. This makes Sister Zeitz grandma for the 7th time. Congratulations to her and to the proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Zeitz.
One of our junior members, Shirley Ann Novinc, was married September 29th to Mr. Donald Groenke. Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Novinc of Chickasaw. Shirley’s mother, Sister Mary Novinc, and all her aunts are members of Branch 14. Congratulations and best wishes to the newly married couple.
Zarja member, Frances Rotar, passed away in October. Our deepest sympathy to her family.
Sister Kathleen Kusar was married this past fall to Mr. John Jurcago. Kathleen is a graduate of St. Vincent Charity Hospital and is presently on the staff of the same hospital. Kathleen’s sister, Helen Mary, is engaged to be married and is planning a June wedding. Both girls are daughters of Sister Helen Kusar of Klrtland. All, including a junior member, Mary Lou, are members of Br. 14.
December brings with It the holiday season as well as birthdays for many of our members. In all the hustle and bustle of the season we wish you a Happy Birthday.

FAMILY CIRCLES CELEBRATE
No. 13, San Francisco, Cal. — State President, Rose Scoff, has received the confirmation to her plans to have Zveza Day in Fontana come 19G3. Rose has worked on this idea for three years and we are all happy that Fontana answered favorably to this suggestion from Rose. For those who are interested, it is advisable to contact Rose at your earliest convenience for a reservation as there will be one bus and this will assure you a place. This sounds rather much in advance but time flies and soon the date will be upon us and some will be upset they are unable to go, so please to be one of the gang, call Rose!
Our travelers Raymond A. Whitney and Mary Rauh are home after a trip of 5,000 miles meeting many members of the family otherwise unknown until now. A family reunion after over thirty years proved to be a happy experience for these folks. First flying to Toronto, Canada to the home of Mrs. Phillip Paznor and then by car to Ely, Minn. (Mary’s first home) to the home of Mrs. Frances Grego rich. These sisters have not had the pleasure of meeting all families at once. Mary has 2 sons and 2 daughters and Silvia has 8 boys and 4 girls plus 17 grandchildren, Frances 3 boys and 5 girls

plus 12 grandchildren so you can imagine the excitement! They concluded with a trip to Duluth and then home via jet to California. It is not possible to forget such a happy experience, eh Mary??? Of course Mary's children were unable to attend nor could her grandchildren.

Many thanks to our committee who handled our breakfast after our Mass for our deceased members. As usual, Ann Stark was head of the group. This little lady is flitting here and there at every Zveza function. It seems impossible to be in so many places at once but she finds the time and place to be of use. Nice going gals, days like those are long to be remembered. Thanks to Father Vital Vodušek for the use of the hall.
Merry Christmas to all our sister members throughout the U.S. May this time of peace on earth show us once again that we can and will be happy with our friends and neighbors. No. 17, West Ablis. Wise. — The
Wisconsin State Convention on Sun., Sept, 16th at Willard turned out to be a success. Everyone who attended had a nice time. The trip in itself was enjoyable from all reports, tho it rained almost all day, intermittently. The spirit of the ladies’ kept high and even tho the bus driver was not Slovenian, he enjoyed the singing and whistled along with the more familiar tunes. That made it much more fun for the passengers.
Arriving just in time for the Holy Mass, Rev. Okorn with Mrs. Mary Staut of Willard greeted the women and began the procession into church. Immediately after Mass, a delightful dinner was served with all the trimmings, including that delicious Slovenian treat, Potica. Many thanks to the wonderful cooks and waitresses who made it possible for such a lovely feast.
The program and the choir performing several selections which everyone heartily enjoyed followed the dinner.
The convention itself began with reports by the delegates which were very interesting. Br. 12 of Milwaukee will be hostess branch for the 5th annual State Day in 1963.
Many thanks to Mrs. Mary Staut for undertaking the responsiblities of this affair and what a grand job she did! Her members gave full cooperation, too, which made it a moral success as well. It is gratifying to know that a small town like Willard undertook this affair and made it into a real success. I deeply regret not being there myself, due to a commitment which I had to keep. I hope and pray that I shall be present when you all meet again.
Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kastelic (Angela), 1133 S. 86th St., in West Allis on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They have
2	sons, a daughter and 5 grandchildren. Angela, who is known to most of us, has always been a very active member, never refusing to help when asked. She is the Slovenian reporter of our branch for Zarja. We wish them good health and good luck in the years to come.
Sandra Lee Schubert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jehn Schubert and Frank Schimetz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shimetz, Sr. were united in marriage on Sept. 15th at St. Mary Help of Christian Church. Breakfast and reception followed at the K.P. Hall in Milwaukee. They honeymooned in Florida and are home at 1456 S. 65th St. Sandra Lee’s mother, Rose is an active member of our branch. May God bless the newlyweds with many years of happiness.
Mrs. Frances Marolt is convalescing at her home after a siege of many weeks duration in the hospital. She suffered a heart attack in Lemont, Illinois, while taking part in the pilgrimage and honey festival there. Mary Kastner has also returned home from the hospital. A speedy recovery to them and all our sick members.
Those of you in arrears with dues are kindly asked to bring them up to date by the end of the year; time is nearly here for the final check of books before 1963.

MINNESOTA ZVEZA DAY IN GILBERT
Again Minnesota Zveza day at Gilbert, Minnesota September 9, was a huge success.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 11 a.m. and Rev. Father Kausek’s talk was most inspiring. The choir sang beautifully.
The business meeting followed the Mass with a large attendance.
Supreme President Tanko spoke on the recent cost increase made on our beloved Zarja and on our new membership drive. She talked on the trips made by the S.W.U. groups in the past year. Many of the members of various branches are interested in making a trip to Washington, D.C., next summer in a group.
The banquet was wonderful. The dinner was served by the church guild and the program was very interesting.
Toast Mistress Mary Brank did a splendid job.
We wrant to thank Mrs. Lucich and the Gilbert branch for the wonderful day we had spent in Gilbert.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — Our condolences to the family of Mrs. Anna Vrancih who lost their father and husband. Mrs. Vranich was the former Anna Kozar from Belle Ave.
Mrs. Helen Pluth from Elizabeth St. has been confined at St. Joseph Hospital. After a ten day return from the hospital at home Mrs. Jennie Ka-nopek had to return for another serious operation. Mrs. Anna Ferlin and Mrs. Josephine Hochevar from Broadway are still convalesing at home after their return from the hospital. We hope all our sick members, at the hospital or at home, will soon have a complete recovery.
When this present issue of Zarja arrives at your home, the Christmas season will get in the lull swing. We hope all of you will have a very nice Christmas this year, with health and contentment, and at this time we shall all kneel at the crib of our Christ and pray for “Peace on Earth”.

After the serious business of bowling on Oct 29th the ladies enjoyed themselves at a Halloween party which was planned by Frances McCarthy and Evelyne Gregory and assisted by Ellaine Panian and Mary Rudman. Winners of the prizes in the costume judging were Evelyne Gregory, Ellaine Panian, Lodene Hayes and
Marje Wajchert. Agnes Koerber, former secretary of the league was a special guest at the party.
Therese Juricic and Helen Vessel are the two new bowlers who have joined the league since Betty Flor-yancic and Shirly Goron had to drop out. We welcome them and hope that they will enjoy being with us.
At the conclusion of the first round of bowling we have only two games over 200. Evelyne Gregory is high with 219 and Jo Mlakar 203. Five 500 or better series have been bowled by Ann Stefanich 524; Jo Mlakar 513; Marge Rachor 510; Helen Golobic 508 and Ann Cox 500.

Francis J. Sumic Joliet, 111.
Francis Sumic, known to ail as Tammy, died Sept. 16, 1962, at St. Joseph’s Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Europe on Dec. 14, 1906 and resided in Joliet for the last fifteen years, although he lived previously in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He was founder and charter member of the American Slovenian Home soon after he moved to Joliet in 1948.
Tammy was a person whose good deeds for others are too numerous to mention. He was a natural promoter, a great fra-ternalist and loved people. He was a scribe for KSKJ sports and lodge activities and often wrote about the S. W. U. sports events in fraternal newspapers.
The S. W. U. Bowling League in Joliet was one of his favorite groups and for them, too, he was a great booster. In fact, “Be and Booster” was his by-word in all his writings. His death came as a great shock to everyone.
Heartfelt sympathy to his widow, Mrs. Josephine Sumic, a former S. W. U. Supreme Officer, to his father, George Sumic and sisters, Molly and Frances Su-mic, of Pittsburgh. May his soul rest in peace.	C. L.

Whether or not your Christmas cards are well received may depend on your knowledge of etiquette and postal rules—a knowledge that should not be taken for granted. Each year two million Christmas cards go astray because of errors in addressing and mailing; thousands more that reach their destination “miss” because they don’t come up to accepted standards of taste and etiquette.

G. Always sign your complete name when it’s not imprinted or engraved. Husband-and-wife cards can be signed Jane and John Doe, or Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, or The John Does. It’s correct to add “and family” to your signature. Acceptable alternative:	. . and best wishes from all of us, Jane

Such lapses are all too easy for anyone involved in the Christmas rush—yet they’re easily avoided. To make sure your cards produce Yuletide warmth instead of December frost. Jerlyn Madison of the Sheaffer Pen Company offers these seasonal greeting tips:
1. Be sure your greeting conveys the spirit of Christmas. Don’t strain to achieve new or different ways to express greetings; the basic “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” is hard to improve upon. Cards with religious motifs are logical and very acceptable.
2. Since it’s the thought that really counts, it makes little difference whether you send your greeting in the form of an elaborate printed card, a handwritten note, a holiday informal, or a conventional Christmas card.
3. You’re within bounds of good etiquette if you simply sign your name under a printed message. However, if you’re sending a Christmas card with both greeting and your name imprinted, you should add a brief personal, handwritten message for your close friends and relatives.
4. Address a card to both husband and wife, even if you know only one of them. The exception: a semi business card that may be sent to one or the other at his or her office,
5. If—horror!—you receive a card from someone you overlooked and you can’t get a greeting back to them by Christmas, it’s proper to send a

11. You’ll be less likely to have cards returned or delayed if you check all doubtful addresses before mailing. First-class postage assures forwarding if the addressee has moved, or return to the sender if the card is undeliverable—providing you’ve put your return address on the upper left-hand comer of the envelope
12. Mail out-of-town cards two weeks before Christmas, and local cards at least a week in advance. Help your regular and extra postal employes bv following the Christmas mail hints issued by local postmasters.
If you mind your personal, postal, and penmanship P’s and Q’s, there’s every reason to believe your Christinas cards will rate—and get—a warm and friendly welcome.
VICKI’S IN THE HOLIDAY MOOD
No. 25, Cleveland, O. — How about making plans to attend our December meeting? We promise an evening of dining and singing and O! bing-ing. There will be a sliort-program of entertainment just for you. So come to this special meeting and we will fill you with gay Holiday spirits.

No. 23, Ely, Minn. Dawn Club Our
Sept. meeting was held at the Community Center on the 19th. Pres. Barbara Brennan opened the meeting with prayer and we had a fairly good turn-out of ladies. It would really be much better if more of you attended in the future. The secretary and treasurer read their reports and received approval as read. It was decided to have a games party in Oct. and each girl was asked to invite a guest or two.
Oct. 17th was the date of our next meeting at which, we decided to have our Christmas dinner in the Blue Room of the Forest Hotel on Dec. 4th at 6:30 p. m. After the short business meeting, games were played with 11 tables playing. The lucky ladies were Mines. Mary Mantel, Jos. Starkovich and Lyle Brennan. Lunch was served to the delight of all.
In November, we planned another social hour and luncheon after the meeting and the committee consisted of: Mmes. Frank Polyner, Jos. Jamnik, John Schubitz, Joseph Godec and Miss Mary Stubler. Mary Shikonya took home the door prize.

Death has again visited us and taken a beloved member. Mrs. Mary Livek passed away at the age of 82 years. She is survived by five daughters and two sons. May God reward her for her good deeds on earth and our sympathy to the family.
Since we are in the midst of a new membership campaign, may I urge all of you to enroll as many new members as you can. This way, we will be able to replace the members we have lost by death.

No. 33, Duluth, Minn. Over one hundred members attended the annual Smorgasbord Supper held for the members at our November meeting. The supper was out-of-this-world! Everything from soup to nuts was served and the committee is to be congratulated on the splendid job they did. A program followed — accordion numbers by Christine Berger, our juvenile member and a few songs by a group of girl scouts, many of whom are also members.
The meeting was held with 10 new adult members enrolled, plus 5 juveniles. Plans were made for the December meeting on the 5tli at 7 p. m. Election of officers and our business for the new year will be outlined. Only when the members turn out in large numbers can there be much accomplished, so, let’s have a big attendance — voice your opinions for the betterment of the membership.
A fine committee was appointed to take charge of the Christmas party after the meeting. We can be sure we will again have a grand time!
Fr. Perkovich then showed slides of his recent trip to Europe; the many beautiful scenes were interesting and will live long in our hearts. Thank you, Father.
If for some reason you were unable to attend, you have missed the boat! But, do not forget another evening of fun on Dec. 5th.

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. — With Mrs. John Pahula presiding, the members of Branch 34 met for their October meeting, with 16 members present. The vacuum packed candy which was ordered, had arrived, and was distributed to the members. This is an annual money making project for our Branch, and finds ready acceptance in every household.
Following the business meeting, a social hour was enjoyed and prize winners at “500” were Mmes. Joseph Gornick, Edward Dragavon, Joseph Jamnick and I^ouis Chiabotti. The evening was concluded with a delicious lunch, served by the hostesses, Mrs. Mary Pahula and Mrs. John Pahula.
Hostesses for the November meeting were Mmes. Joseph Stefanich and William Vollendorf.

No. 42, Maple Hgts., Ohio — The
October meeting was held at the home of our treasurer, Mary Hočevar, with 16 members in attendance. Refreshment hostesses were: Antonia Matis, Theresa Simončič, Millie Lipnos, Louise Prhne and Anna Dragonic, the latter winning the door prize donated by Dorothy Mehosky.
Our Autumn Project was terminated at this time with Mary Hočevar winning first prize and Johanna Hrovat winning second and third prize respectively.
A major topic for discussion was the old question of our selecting refreshment hostesses. In the past the birthday celebrants for the month of the meeting and the one preceding it were the official hostesses. The biggest disadvantage to this policy was the overabundance of hostesses at one meeting and the lack of them at another. With our first meeting of the new year a new policy will be adopted. Three refreshment hostesses will serve at each meeting, these having been taken from an alphabetical list of all our branch members. In the event of any new members once the practice has been established and their letter is past, their names will appear at the bottom of the list.
We will repeat our Christmas candy sale of last year which proved so very successful. Our secretary, Louise Prhne, is handling this project, so contact her for your needs. Mrs. Prhne is anticipating hospitalization as we go to press so our very best goes with you, Louise.
To all Br. #42 members the very merriest of holidays and what say we all try to make 1963 a little more stimulating for SŽZ. You can begin by coming to the meetings. Remember “United we stand!”

GOLDEN JUBILEE IN SOUDAN,MINN.
A reception for the honored couple was held in the Parish Hall following the Mass. A smorgasbord dinner was served at a table centered with a “money tree” whose branches were laden with money wrapped in gold foil, one of the gifts from their children. Also displayed were the many beautiful cards and other gifts which the couple received. Among them were two gold plates and two rosaries, gifts from the girls at St. Ann’s Home for the Aged in Elgin, Illinois, where the Cvetan’s daughter, Sister Dolorosia, is their supervisor. In addition, their children presented them with a dome clock.
Also decorating the table was a beautiful three-tiered wedding cake, topped with a miniature bridal couple, and decorated in gold. Each place setting was also decorated with a gold leaf. Floral arrangements of gold and bronze chrysanthemums were placed on the tables, gifts from their children and their friends. For the occasion, Mrs. Cvetan wore a blue silk print dress with an orchid corsage, tinted in gold, beige, and bronze tied with a gold ribbon. Mr. Cvetan wore a white carnation boutonniere.
John Cvetan arrived in Soudan from Petrovina, Croatia in 1905. On August 5, 1912, Miss Theresa Dragavon arrived in Soudan from Grabrovec, Jugoslavia. The couple was married in St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower on Oct. 7, 1912 with Rev. Joseph Ferjančič (now deceased) officiating. The couple established their home in Soudan, where they have resided continuously. Mr. Cvetan was an employee at the

10	years ago.
The couple became the parents of twelve children, ten of whom survive, John having died in infancy and Ann passed away at the age of 12 years. They also have fourteen grandchildren, eight of whom were here for the celebration.
Children of the Cvetans are Mrs. Joseph (Theresa) Zychek of Chicago; Louis Cvetan, Soudan; Mrs. James (Angela) Kullianek of Argo, Illinois; Joseph Cvetan of Oaklawn, Illinois; Sister Dolorosia (Frances) of Techny, Illinois, who is with the Order of Missionary Sisters—Servants of the Holy Spirit; Miss Mary Cvetan of Chicago; Mrs. Hubert (Margaret) Klenck of Chicago; Frank Cvetan, Chicago; Mrs. John (Agnes) Hansen of Madison, Wisconsin and Edward Cvetan of Bagdad, Iraq.
An “open house” was also held at the home of the couple during the evening. Out of town guests who were present for the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Stepan, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stepan and family and Mr. and Mrs. John Zollar and son, Jack all of Duluth; Miss Rose Nemanich of Nopeming; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zu-pancicli of Ely; and Sister Waif reda who accompanied Sister Dolorosia to Soudan.
Mrs. Cvetan joined the SWU— Branch 34 on May 3, 193G, so has been a member over 2G years. Congratulations to them from all members of Branch 34.

No. 46, St. Louis, Mo. — Well the last meeting of the year is coming up again; that means our Christmas party too. The Party will be on Dec. 9th. It will again be at our Secy’s, house, Helen Skoff, G255 Westway PI. Anyone wanting to donate potica, cookies, apple strudel, should please call Helen or me. Meeting will begin promptly at 1:00 so we can finish up early and start on our party. Everyone, again, bring a dollar ($1) gift so we can exchange.
Our member, Agnes Michelitz, Helen Skoff’s mother, underwent major surgery at St. Mary’s Hosp. on Oct. 26th, so when you read this article she will be out of the hospital and recuperating at Helen’s house. We probably all see her at the party. She has done really well. Everybody should send her a cheer-up card.
We will see a new face at the Christmas party this year, my cousin, Ida Webb, who is home till the first of the year visiting her family. Her husband is in the Coast Guard and transferred to Wash., D. C., from New London, Conn. So, it will be good to have her with us again after so long.
So see everyone at Christmas party on Dec. 9th, 1:00 sharp at Helen’s house.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio Our Oct 15th meeting was the most unusual and exciting one — it was the celebration of the forthcoming marriage of our Supreme President, Toni Tanko, who had announced her wedding on Oct. 27th. We dressed her up as a bride and took many pictures of her and all the members. We had a real wedding luncheon, in spite of the Hallowe'en spirit, which was normal for this time of the year. Our hostesses for the luncheon were Carole Traven, Theresa Komat and Angie Lube. They put it over big and everything was delicious and beautifully arranged. We also had a large attendance.
Then, on the following Saturday, Oct. 20th, our branch had a surprise for Toni at Globokar’s on E. 200th St. The combined Cleveland branches were also invited to join in. The evening started off with Mrs. Stare presenting a beautiful corsage to our bride-to-be and Rose Želodec, pres, of no. 50, presented her a gift from the branch. Mrs. Starin, the State Pres, of Ohio, also presented a gift from the Combined Branches. Then, Carole Traven sang a beautiful song to Toni, called “My Wish for You.” It was beautifully sung and really gave the right touch to the event.
Soudan, Minn. — Mr. and Mrs. John Cvetan, residents of Soudan for over a half century, observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Oct. 7. An
11	o’clock High Mass was celebrated by Rev. John Golobich for their intention, with Mrs. Frank Vesel at the organ and directing the choir. Father held an appropriate religious ceremony before the Mass, and another after the Mass during which time he blessed the honored couple. In a short talk he congratulated the couple and their children and grandchildren for celebrating such an event, and mentioned that in his 14 years as a priest, this was the first time he was officiating at a golden wedding anniversary.
A hearty dinner was enjoyed by all and dancing followed — we all kept the groom-to-be very busy, poor fellow. He was all pooped out before the evening was over, because he had all sizes of us to turn around the dance floor. We have to thank him, especially for keeping the party a
secret and giving us a chance to really surprise Toni.

No. 55, Girard, Ohio. The October meeting opened with a prayer led by pres. Theresa Lozier. No minutes were read as the rec. sec’y, Theresa Seve-rinslci was absent due to the flu. A card was signed by all the members and sent to her. We hope that by this time you are completely recovered, Theresa.
During the business meeting, Mrs. Lozier announced there would be election of officers in November. A Mass was said at St. Rose’s church on Nov. 4th for the living and deceased members of br. no. 55.
After the meeting, a delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Katherine Anzek, chairman and assisted by Mrs. Jennie Selak and Mrs. Mary Turk. Mrs. Turk made delicious refrigerator apple strudel. I guess she is still busy giving recipes. Games were played and prizes went to Mmes. Mary Nigut, Jennie Selak and Mary Mehalco.
Deepest sympathy to Mrs. Anna Kri-vak on the loss of her beloved husband, Stephen. We were sorry to hear of Mrs. Josephine Perusek’s illness; she is at Euclid-Glenville Hospital in Euclid, O. No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. In the absence of our reporter for this month, I will do the column. First of all, our fall meetings have been very well- attended. Discussions and plans are being made for next year’s Minnesota Day, which comes in the fall of 19G3. Ladies. if you are asked to work on a committee, I hope you will all cooperate.
At our Oct. meeting, plans were made for our Christmas dinner on Tues., Dec. 11th at G:30. Exchange of gifts and candy for the juniors who attend. The officers will be the cooks this year and the extra help will be given by Margaret Shelko, Mary Babich, Elizabeth Draskovich and Ann Mainerich.
Cards were played and a lunch served by the hostesses: Theresa Hattam, Mary Putzel, Ann Chacich, Ann Phillips and Frances Bozich. Prizes were won by Fiances Prasnick, Caroline Kozina, Barbara Doshen, Katherine Marino, Catherine Muhvich, Kate Furin, Margaret Shelko, Mary Babich, Rose Chernugel and Ann Selvo.
At this time, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to our reporter, Frances Puhelc and her sister, Mary Puhek on the loss of her dear mother. May she rest in peace.

end of another year. We have had some really nice meetings in 1962.
In Sept., Frances Yerman, Mary Maček, Theresa Racher and yours truly along with two guests from Warren took a trip to Cleveland to visit our sister branches who held a bazaar there. We had a lovely visit with some of the Cleveland members.
We want to w'elcome our new member, Nancy Segreto and also, Delores Churazzi, who has become a senior member transferring from the juvenile dept.
We are all looking forward to our Christmas party and hope we have a good time -— we know we will.

members on the sick list, we wish you better health. Anna Riegler was in the hospital some weeks ago. Hannah Adamic also is hospitalized and Mary Lauriski is recuperating from her illness at home.
Officers of the branch wish to thank all members for the cooperation they have given them in the past year and hope that all future elected officers will have the same full support in the coming year.

No. 67, Bessemer, Pa. — Our Sept. and Oct. meetings’ attendance was fair. I guess just a little more cooperation is needed from our members. There were many things discussed — our Christmas party, the exchange of presents, and about going out for Christmas dinner in Nov., with our husbands. We would, however, like all our members to attend our meeting and express their thoughts and give some suggestions on where to go instead of letting the president and officers do so for them. We should all help, as It is everyone's club and not just the officer's. So please co-operate
and make our club what it should and could be.
Our president got a letter from the Bessemer Boro. It read that our town ie celebrating its 50th Anniversary this coming year and we were asked to help and take part in it. Again, we are asking for some ideas on what our club can do. We can have a float and take part in the parade, have Slovenian dinners, also Slovenian baked goods, which some of our ladies are good at baking. Ladies, put your thinking caps on because we would really like to hear from you.

No. 72, Pullman, III. — It Is with deep sadness that we report the death of our dear friend and member, Mrs. Jennie Orazem who passed away on October 15th after a long illness.
Mrs. Orazem had been a member of the Slovenian Women’s Union for twenty eight years. She always took an active part in the Union, and for many many years was one of its officers. She served as president for a number of those years. Her last office was that of treasurer. Besides this, her home has been our meeting place for many years. She was dearly loved by all. Her many friends have lost a wonderful friend, her family have lost a wonderful mother and grandmother, and the Union has lost a staunch supporter. She will long be remembered and missed. May she rest in peace!
Mrs. Stephie Sheehy has been quite ill. We were so sorry to hear this news. Our very best wishes to her for a speedy recovery. We hope by the time this is in print, she will be better and well on the road to recovery.

Oct. meeting was opened with prayer led by the pres., Kay Yuratovac. The business for the evening was where and when our birthday dinner will be held. It was decided we would hold it at Danny Carr’s in Maple Hgts., on Oct. 18th. We planned to attend in Hallowe’en costumes if desired. I would like to congratulate the ladies, who braved it and attended in their costumes. Prizes were awarded to: Joanne Kunka for the prettiest, Henrietta Hensee and Sally Kunka tied for the funniest and yours truly for the most original. The attendance was so good, it was heart-warming. I have been told that everyone enjoyed themselves. The chicken dinner, I’m sure,
was liked by all and helped make the evening a complete success.
Some members of Br. no. 101 were our guests. I would like to thank them for coming.

No. 92, Crested Butte, Colo. Our regular meeting was held on Sept. 9th, owing to the fact that so many had visitors during the Labor Day weekend. We gathered at the home of Aurelia Welch. Mrs. Martin Spritzer was our guest. Come again, Mrs. Spritzer. Hossesses for the evening were Margaret and Ann Malenšek.
In Oct., we met on the 7th at Aurelia’s home, again. We thanked Pauline Stajduliar for donating our thank-you card for our convention in July; also, a thank-you to Josephine Krizmanicli, who donated a scrapbook for the branch.
Hostesses for the meeting were Josephine Somrak and Frances Pogorelz. At this meeting, we discussed plans to collect for the moving of the St. Patrick’s church altar to the cemetery.
I hope everyone gives generously and that our collections are a great sue cess.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone for the cards, flowers, gifts, prayers and visits to my dear father, Gregory Stajduhar, during his seven week hospital confinement. I know he will be glad to hear from you or see you personally at home.
A Thank-You to my secret pal for the lovely anniversary gift. I came home from Gunnison to find a box on the porch. It contained a scatter rug and lovely planter. So, thank you, either Ann or Margie Malenšek. Let’s all turn out for our next meeting, as we have election of officers.

The Sept. meeting at Kathryn Ray-bick’s home was well-attended; we had a very nice covered-dish luncheon. At that meeting, sister Jennie Roth told us all about her trip to Germany, Rome, etc. We all enjoyed listening to the many different ways people live, eat and dress. Thanks, Jennie.

No. 105, Detroit, Mich. A lovely evening was spent at Mrs. Pauline Ada-mic’s home, where we gathered for the meeting in October.
A surprising large number of members attended, which made us very happy. We also had a guest, Mrs. Mary Jamselc, the secretary of Detroit branch no. 9. She was very welcome.
Since the meeting was in the evening, we didn’t expect a luncheon, especially the kind Pauline served! She had all sorts of goodies and refreshments ready for us. We all say, thanks loads, Pauline!
She had a birthday cake for our two members celebrating birthdays in Oct. and supplied a hostess gift and a lovely gift it was. Mrs. Anna Plazar took it home and our guest Mary Jamšek took home the gift donated by Mrs. Alice Kocjan. Thanks to them.

To me it was like Christmas at this meeting; all the gifts the ladies had for me at Mrs. Lindich’s home were brought again. So, I must thank everyone of you for being so thoughtful and nice to me. This also is the time for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year. And, I hope we will still have better times at our gatherings in the New Year.

ROJSTVO BOGA!
OZIČNA ZGODBA je vedno lepa ln privlačna. Znamo jo skoraj na pamet. Vendar ko jo zopet beremo, nas kar nekaj dregne okoli srca. Nismo veseli zaradi zunanjega bleska ampak zaradi notranje zavesti, da se je zgodil velik čudež. Oprla so se nebesa, kraj naše prihodnje sreče. Bog se nas je usmilil.
V	tem božjem otroku, ki je prišel na svet, je odrešenje in odpuščanje našili grehov. Kako ne bi bili veseli?
Tolažbo in zaupanje na Boga je imel tudi sv. Pavel, ko je razmišljal o učlovečeni božji besedi. Takole nam pravi o tem velikem dogodku svete noči:
“Preljubi. Razodela se je milost božja, ki prinaša zveličanje vsem ljudem; uči nas, da se odpovejmo brezbožnosti in posvetnim željam in na tem svetu trezno in pravično in pobožno živimo, pričakujoč blaženega upanja in veličastnega prihoda velikega Boga in Zveličarja našega Jezusa Kristusa, ki je dal samega sebe za nas, da bi nas odrešil vse krivice in zase očistil kot izvoljeno ljudstvo, vneto za dobra dela.”
Večkrat se sv. Pavel vrne k temu velikemu dogodku v človeški zgodovini. Vse človeštvo bi propadlo, da Bog ni izpolnil obljube dane v raju, da bo poslal odrešenika. Takole pravi v svojem pismu:
“Razodela se je dobrotljivost in ljudomilost Boga. našega Odrešenika: odrešil nas je ne zaradi pravičnih del, ki smo jih mi storili, marveč po svojem usmiljenju v kopeli prerojenja po svetem Duhu, ki ga je na nas bogato razlil po Jezusu Kristusu našem Zveličarju, da bi bili opravičeni z njegovo milostjo in bi po upanju postali dediči večnega življenja v Kristusu Jezusu našem Gospodu.”
Kako pomembno je v današnjem času, da ne pozabimo na božjo dobroto. Pri polni mizi človek rad pozabi, da je zato na svetu, da Boga spozna, ga časti In ljubi in se potem večno zveliča.
Sv. Pavel nas lepo opozarja na zavest, ki mora vladati v srcih zato, ker je Bog poslal svojega Sina, da bo naš Odrešenik. Takole pravi:
“Mnogokrat in na mnogotere načine je nekdaj Bog govoril očetom po prerokih, slednjič te dni nam je govoril po Sinu, ki ga je postavil za dediča vsega in po njem tudi naredil svet; on, ki je odsvit njegovega veličastva in podoba njegovega bitja ter nosi vse z besedo svoje moči, je dovršil očiščenje od grehov, sedel na desnico veličastva na višavah ter postal toliko višji od angelov, kolikor odličnejše ime je dobil mimo njih. Zakaj kateremu izmed angelov je kdaj rekel: “Moj Sin si ti, danes sem te rodil?” In zopet: “Jaz mu bom Oče in on mi bo Sin.” In ko zopet vpelje Prvorojenca na svet, pravi: “In molijo naj ga vsi angeli božji.”
O	angelih pravi: “Kateri dela svoje angele kakor vetrove in svoje služabnike kakor ognjen plamen”; sinu pa: “Tvoj prestol, o Bog je za vekomaj”; in “žezlo pravice je žezlo tvojega kraljestva. Ljubil si pravico, In sovražil krivico zato te je, o Bog, tvoj Bog mazilil z oljem veselja bolj kot tvoje tovariše.” Dalje: “Ti, Gospod, si v začetku zemljo utrdil in delo tvojih rok je nebo. Ona bosta prešla, ti pa ostaneš; oba se bosta postarala kakor se obleka; kakor plašč ju boš zvil in bosta spremenjena; ti pa si vedno isti in tvoja leta ne minejo.”
Kako moremo bolje posvetiti božič kakor s priznanjem božje moči nad seboj in Njegove neskončne dobrote do človeka.
Vesele in blagoslovljene božične praznike vsem članicam in njihovim družinam.
IN ZVEZDA JIH JE VODILA V KRAJ, KJER SE JE RODIL ZVELIČAR

Rojeni smo, da živimo določen čas. Vsak človek si usmerja življenje po svoje. Eden išče sreče tukaj, drugi tam. Vsi pa iščemo družbe, prijateljstva, udobnosti in veselja ter vsak na svoj način postavljamo cilj življenju.
Naša mladost je kot pomlad, ko delamo načrte in gradimo za bodočnost. Nato pride poletje življenja. Opazujemo setev in se vprašujemo, bo li obrodila tako, kot želimo in smo pričakovali. Prilivamo in okopujemo, pa včasih setev le ne rodi tako, kot smo mislili in se nadejali. Mogoče je krivo nezdravo zrno, ali nam pa majnka moči in spretnosti obdelovalca . . . Jesen življenja prinese izpolnitev naših nad ali pa razočaranje. Ni nam dano iti nazaj in sejati znova ter popraviti morebitne pogreške v življenju Žanjemo, kar smo sejali: po tem sadu bomo sojeni tako od ljudi kot od Stvarnika.
Naglo poteče leto, naglo teče tudi naše življenje. Kratka so leta in kratka je doba, ki nam je odmerjena. Zato bi morali svoje kratko življenje porabiti v svoj in svojega naroda dobrobit, da bi se ob našem slovesu lahko reklo: Svet je bil boljši, dokler je živel ta človek.
Naša Zveza ta mesec praznuje 36-letnico svojega obstoja. Precejšnja je doba teh let v človeškem življenju, kaj šele v društvenem! Lahko bi rekla, da se Zveza nahaja v prehodu med poletjem in jesenjo. Ozira se na setev, ki dozoreva. Setev, katero so naše zveste in pridne članice skozi dobo 3G let neprenehoma obdelovale. Setev je dobro obrodila in lahko smo ponosne na svoje plodovito delo.
Slovenska ženska zveza je ves čas obstoja svoje dolžnosti odlično vršila. Pod svoje okrilje zbira Slovenke kristalnega značaja in potom ZARJA jih vzpodbuja k dobremu, jih obvešča o dogodkih v organizaciji, kakor tudi o svetovnih dogodkih. Prinaša duhovno čtivo, čtivo za gospodinje in družino, za nego telesa in zgodovinske spise. Da, lepa je naša organizacija in lepo je njeno uradno glasilo!
Naj ZVEZA in ZARJA živita še mnogo let v korist slovenskega ženstva v Ameriki!

Postavodajalci Združenih držav stanejo davkoplačevalce mnogo denarja — navaja David Barnett, poročevalec za North American Newspaper Alliance.
Kongresna in senatna zbornica staneta vlado letno 147 milijonov dolarjev, trdi poročevalec. Ta znesek, deljen na 437 kongresnikov in 100 senatorjev prinese $275,000 na osebo, kar je že čedna vsota. — Naj navedem potankosti:
Plača vladnih postavodajalcev znaša $22,500 letno. Od te plače sme vsak od svojega davka odračunati $3,000 radi tega, ker vzdržuje dva doma; enega v Washingtonu in drugega v svoji državi. Postavodajalci prejmejo vsak dan po 20 centov od milje za obratno vožnjo v svojo zbornico. Vlada vsakemu dovoli $1,200 na leto za pisalne potreščine. Za vzdrževanje urada v njegovem distriktu prejme mesečno $50.00 Postavodajalci lahko letno govorijo do 50 ur po telefonu na daljavo (long distance calls), stroške plača vlada. Vlada plača tudi letni račun za 20,000 besedi poslanih brzojavno. Njih uradna pošta je znamk prosta, posebej pa še vsak prejme $200 na leto za specialno pošto.
Postovadajalci imajo v Washingtonu krasne urade s kopalnico. Vsak senator ali kongresnik lahko najame do 8 oseb, ki zanj delajo, plača jih vlada. Mnogi vzamejo v službo svoje žene ali sorodnike.
Kongresna restavracija je znana po svoji dobri kuhinji. Cene so tu veliko nižje kot v drugih restavracijah.
Naši ljudski zastopniki imajo prosto poslugo posebnih kongresnih zdravnikov. Znana, slavna Bethseda bolnišnica jim manj računa kot drugim. Če želijo kam potoviati, sami ali z družino, gredo na vladne stroške, če najdejo dokaz, da je potovanje v zvezi z njih uradom.
Razkošni avto s šoferjem je na vladne stroške na razpolago predsednikom senatnih in kongresnih odborov.
Mnogi postavodajalci imajo še postranske zaslužke Ali so člani odvetniških družb, imajo radio postaje ali druge investicije.
Postavodajalci lahko gredo v pokoj z 60 leti. Pokojnina znaša $15,000.00 letno.

Vino je za starejše ljudi to, kar je mleko za otroke
—	trdi zdravniška knjiga.
Mnogi so mnenja, da človek, ki trpi na bolezni jeter, ne sme vina piti. Najnovejša raziskovanja so dognala, da takim bolnikom vino ne škodi, temveč celo koristi. Vino prinese v telo mnogo važnih rudninskih snovi, ki jih je sonce celo leto vnašalo in tvorilo v grozdju.
Dr. Salvatore Lucia, ki poučuje na državni univerzi v Californiji trdi, da je vino zelo priporočljivo bolnikom, ki imajo sladkorno bolezen. Vino, zlasti naravno belo vino, ugodno vpliva na diabetike. Po mnenju tega zdravnika je učinek penicilina večji, če bolnik vsak dan popije čašico dobrega vina, seveda v skladu s svojim zdravjem.
Vino poglablja dihanje, pospešuje prebavo in krvni obtok ter stopnjuje odpornost človeškega organizma proti boleznim, zlasti gripi in bronhitisu. Seveda moramo vino zmerno uživati. Čezmerno uživanje lahko škoduje srcu in povzroči notrajne motnje v krvnem obtoku.
Nek švicarski zdravnik priporoča ljudem s slabimi živci, naj popijejo vsak dan dva kozarca dobrega vina in sicer pri jedi. Na splošno lahko zdrav človek — po mnenju zdravnikov — dnevno popije do pol kvarta naravnega vina, kar ga bo močno okrepilo.
Ko govorilno o naravnem vinu, kaj je bolj naravnega kot je vino, ki ga znajo napraviti naši Slovenci. Sok iz sladkega, zrelega grozdja, brez vsakih primesi, ki jih vsebujejo komercialna vina daje slovenskemu vinu pravi okus in tudi zdravje.

Bogu na višavah slava čast doni, mir pa osrečuje dobre naj ljudi!
Z angeli stopimo k revnim jaslicam, ž njimi se združimo v rajskem petju tam.

Vse, kar dela, raste, kar živi, cvete:
Človek, gozdi, trate, čast naj Ti daje!

V spomin Rev. M. J. Slajetu,
bivšemu Zvezinemu duhovnemu svetovalcu.
Kev. Slajeta sem prvikrat srečala na Zve-zini konvenciji, ki je bila leta 1933 v Clevelandu. Prišel je pozdravit delegacijo v imenu svoje župnije Device Marije Vnebovzetc v Collinwoodu. V pogovoru z njim sem spoznala inteligentno, visoko naobraženo osebo kristalnih idealov ter zavednega in ponosnega Slovenca, ki je takrat organiziral in na Western univerzi imel slovenski tečaj. Ta tečaj so obiskovali mladi slovenski Amerikanci ter šolske sestre, ki so bile namenjene za učiteljice na slovenskih farnih šolah v Ameriki.
O	Kev. Slajetu mi je bilo povedano, da je silno navdušen za dramatiko ter da je organiziral in vodil mnogo uspešnih oderskili predstav. Bil je tudi izvrsten pevec in ljubitelj petja. V svoji fari je organiziral več pevskih društev.
Rev. Slaje se mi je takoj ob prvem srečanju priljubil. Vprašala sem ga, če bi hotel sprejeti duhovno vodstvo pri naši Zvezi, llad je privolil in konvencija ga je navdušeno izvolila za duhovnega svetovalca Slovenske Ženske Zveze. To mesto je upravljal od julija 1933 to julija 19-16, ko je zaradi rahlega zdravja odstopil. Ves ta čas mi je bil — kot takratni Zvezini glavni predsednici — v veli-
ko pomoč s svojimi velikodušnimi in razumevajočimi nasveti. V ZARJO je pisal krasne iu duhovite članke. Imel je izredno lep slog, da je bilo čitanje njegovih spisov velik duševni užitek.
Zadnjikrat sem Rev. Slajeta videla za časa obiska v Lorainu leta 1957. Povedel nas je v svojo veličastno novo farno cerkev sv. Cirila in Metoda, kjer je bil župnik od leta 1934. Krasna stavba je njemu kot graditelju in slovenski naselbini v Lorainu časten spomenik.
C. g. Slaje je leta 1958 imel namen potovati z Zvezino skupino na obisk v staro domovino, a mu rahlo zdravje ni dopustilo. Zelo rad bi se enkrat videl prelepo Savinjsko dolino ter mesto Celje, kjer je kaplanoval kmalu po svoji posvetitvi v duhovnika. Zelja se mu žal ni izpolnila.
V	soboto 27. oktobra t. 1. se je blagemu gospodu življenje izteklo. Rev. Slaje je bil ob veliki udeležbi svojih duhovnih sobratov in žalujočih faranov položen k večnemu počitku. — Naj v miru počiva! Zveza mu bo ohranila trajen in hvaležen spomin!

SLOVENSKI BOŽIČ V ZIMSKI PRIRODI
DOClM NARAVA, ZAVITA V SVOJO BELO ODEJO, na videz trdno spava, je vendar ohranjenih v njej še nekoliko ostankov življenja.
Ob zamrzlem potoku poleteva z glasnim vikom azurno-modri vodomec, na bolj toplih vodah škre-betajo jate divjih rac, tud’ na čredo sivih opreznih gosi ni težko naleteti, zlasti na poljih, kjer zelena pega ozimine kuka izpod snega. Veseli povodni kos razveseljuje s svoje poskočno pesmico obrežje bistrice vode, v gozdu pa gnezdi krva-vordeči krivokljun, ki ima zdaj hrane v obilici med luskinami smrekovih in borovih storžev. Na vseh cestah in potih se potikajo vrane in kavke brskajoč za redko pičo; časih se jim posreči dobiti v kremplje tudi preradovedno miško, ki je izvabljena od toplih sončnih žarkov zapustila varno izbico v zemlji, hoteč si nabrati še nekoliko oblizkov za božične praznike.
Za božične praznike! Da, prazniki stoje pred durmi, mila zelenica sredi najbolj puščobnega letnega časa. Tudi narava hoče slovesno praznovati ta sveti čas in prav je tako. Saj živi marsikje med ljudstvom govorica, da se ob zimskem sončnem obratu — torej tri dni pred svetim večerom — sonce na nebu od samega veselja na glavo postavi, nato pa obrne svoj voz, da nam prinese daljših in lepših dni.
Nekaj dni pred božičem je kazalo, da nastopi južno vreme. Na marsikakem mestu z drevjem na redko porasle rebri nad domačo hišo so se prikazale med belim snegom na mnogih krajih črne pege. Tu so se dvigali od tal ponižni, temnozeleni, na koncu napiljeni listi. V naslednji noči se je dvignila iz njihovega naročja v bledi svetlobi rimske ceste bela cvetlica s svojo zvezdasto glavico — teloh ali k u r i c a. To je nam vsem znana prijateljica ki se pripravlja, da o-krasi zimsko pokrajino.
Tudi ljubke zimske ptice so že nekaj tednov naši gostje. Kako letaje od drevesa do drevesa,
plezajo in kažejo svoje telovadske umetnije, posebno sinice. Slaba se godi zdaj jajčecem, bubam gosenicam in ličinkam raznih drevesnih škodljivcev pod lubjem. Toda posebno pozornost obračajo ptičice oknu dvonadstropne hiše. Zdaj sfrči tjakaj ta, zdaj ona, in se vrne s polnim klunčkom na vejo. To okence se odpira vsak dan po večkrat in prijazna roka potresa obilo prikuhe k skromni pečenki, ki jo nudi pticam lovska sreča.
Popoldne istega dne so videle naše prijateljice ljubek prizor. Iz veže one dvonadstropne hiše se je prikazal zali krivonog psiček jazbečar in veselo skakal ter bevskal po snegu. Za njim sta šla vriskajoča dva otroka, deček in deklica. Nesla sta nekaj v pisani košarici. Ustavila sta se v rebri nedaleč pod belim telohom pri majhni ravni smrečici ki je bila prav taka, kot slikajo božična drevesca. Premerjala sta z očmi njeno višino in obešala na mladike, obtežene s snegom, štirioglate rumenkaste kocke, privezane na volnene nitke. Slednjič je vrgel deček nekatere še na vrh, kjer so obvisele. Od samega veselja sta otroka ploskala, češ: “To je za najine ljube siničiče!”
Darovi na olepšanem drevesu, ki je zdaj stalo vse bolj ponosno, so bili koščki slanine. In vse tisto popoldne so zapored prihajali v svate k smreki preljubi gostje — siničica za siničico. Dobro se jim je godilo. Saj jih je okusna južina grela, da so smele mirno zreti nasproti mrzlim nočem, ki jih bodo morale preživeti v gostem jelovem mladovju.
Toda nocoj je sveti večer!
Božične kurice so odprle čaše in jih svečano obrnile proti zvezdnatemu šotoru. Ko pa se je popolnoma stemnilo, je zadonela iz bližnjih hiš božična pesem:
Veselo noč praznujemo, iz srca se radujemo . . .

Pavla se je bila tako zaverovala v razvozljanje napisa, da ni slišala korakov, ki so se ji od zadaj bližali. Šele ko je tik za njo zahreščal pesek se je obrnila in zagledala gospoda kurata: “Hvaljen bodi Jezus Kristus!” je brž pozdravila. "Na vekomaj. Amen!” se ji je dobrohotno nasmehnil duhovnik v črnem talarju in koj vprašal: “Andrejčič! Pa tudi razumete, kar ste prebrali?” Pavla je čutila, da bi jo bil gospod rajši nagovoril z gospo, kakor pa da jo je po predpisih imenoval po pisanju. Zdelo se ji je dobro. Dvignila je pogled kakor v doraščajočih letih, ko je stala v Škofji Loki vsa razveseljena pred samostanskim duhovnim očetom. Oko ji je zablestelo. Dekliško mladostno je odgovorila: “Staro nemščino sem doumela latinsko pa ne znam.”
Kurat Bizjan je pokazal s prstom na zgodovinsko ploščo, s preudarkom prebral latinski napis in ga koj tudi razložil: "Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos. Če je Bog z nami, kdo upa biti zoper nas!”
Še je hotel nekaj pristaviti, pa ga je Pavla prehitela: “Do dna razumem, prečastiti.”
In kakor bi potožil nad tistimi šolanimi sodobniki, ki jim je bilo zaupanje v Boga prazna beseda, je kurat Janez Bizjan zamišljeno pristavil: “Globokoverni so bili včasih lastniki graščin.”
“Gott gebs Gliiclc — Bog daj srečo, se mi zdi, je bilo življenjski geslo Jakoba Lamberga,” je vprašujoče pripomnila Pavla.
“Je bilo,” je pritrdil kurat. “In je zidal in gradil in si pridobil čast in oblast in se ni prevzel. Kar poglejva, kako govori dvanajst let kasneje.”
Kurat je odvedel Pavlo nazaj na notranjo stran mogočnega vhoda na dvorišče graščine. Pod uro se je spenja-
lo	med modrimi in črnimi barvami na grbu Lambergov dvoje jeznih psov. Na plošči zgoraj pa je bilo vklesano: ANNO DNI MDLVIIII1)

Kakor bi gospod kurat hotel, naj Pavla sama razmišlja, je pozdravil in odšel. Pavla ga je še slišala, kako počasi stopa po zavitih stopnicah, klesanih iz zelenega kamna, v svoje stanovanje. Najraje bi bila stekla za njim in mu zaupala, da se ona prav zato pokori v nekdanji graščini vernih Lambergov, ker njen mož, doktor Filip Andrejčič, komaj še veruje v Boga. Prazno leseno vedro v roki je postalo težko, kakor bi bilo do roba napolnjeno s svincem.
V	kuhinjo je skoraj pritekla. Nazaj grede cvetočih hijacint na zvezdnati gredici niti videla ni več, nikar da bi se pri njih ustavila.
Iz vedra se je kadila gorka sopara. Mimogrede se je Pavla še enkrat ozrla na napis pod grbom. Nehote je zaprosila: “Bog daj srečen konec!” Kakšen in česa konec misli, pa ni vedela.
Pavla je spet razgrnila po mizi predse oltarni prt. Bil je preprost in kaj majhen. Ni je mikalo, da bi dognala, od kod je. Komaj je nekajkrat potegnila z razbeljenim likalnikom po trdem, doma tkanem platnu, se je prej veder obraz kaznjenke Andrejčič omračil. Pavla je čutila, kakor bi se ji izza temnega likalnika votlo režal v obraz strah pred temnico na dan velikonočnega veselja.
Še so peli ptiči na vrtu. Pavla pa je slišala samo čofotanje mokrega perila. Bilo ji je hudo, kakor bi jo kdo udarjal po glavi. Dobro, da je likala preprost prt od Svetega Petra na Gori, ki ni zahteval kar nič pažnje.
V	kapeli so bile prižgane vse luči. Skozi okno je sijalo pomladansko sonce. Raz strop so nepremično gledali Dobri pastir in štirje evangelisti. Pred oltarjem sta pa gospod kurat in begunjski gospod župnik prepevala psalme.
Kaznjenka Pavla Andrejčič je stala med pevkami na koru. Tresle so se ji noge. Zbala se je, da se sesede. Oprijela se je za orgle in zamižala. Zavedela se je, da bi ležala v bolnišnici in bi velike sobote ne bila dočakala na oddelku, ko bi se ne bila pri velikonočni spovedi gospodu kuratu vsa razodela. Po srečanju in razgovoru pred napisi na dvorišču ni zmogla, da bi se še dlje pota-jevala.
Skrbelo jo je, da bo gospod kurat nejevoljen zavoljo več kot celoletnega prikivanja, se mu je pa obraz razjasnil, kakor bi hotel reči: "Prav sem domneval, da si nedolžna.”
Ponudil se je, da jo reši ječe, če mu Pavla izjavi izven spovednice, da ni kriva.
Ne, ne, ne. Pogubila bi moža in osramotila sebe z očitkom, da ni znala nesti križa do konca.
"Odrešila bi pa očeta in mater,” je ugovarjal spovednik.
Pavla se je zgrozila. Pa je začela kakor otrok moledovati, naj bi gospod kurat obvestil očeta, če bi res legel na smrtno posteljo, o hčerini nedolžnosti.
Kurat Janez Bizjan ni odbil prošnje. Le pripomnil je, da bi kaj takega pač ne bilo tako preprosto in pa da se že še pogovorita, če bo res skrajna sila.
Pavla se je oddahnila. Pa jo je vprašanje, če je njen mož, doktor Andrejčič, vreden tolikih žrtev, še bolj pritisnilo k tlom. Spomnila se je, da gospod kurat gotovo pozna Filipa vsaj iz prerekanj po časopisju, ki so se morda, odkar ona več ne more slediti zunanjemu življenju, še bolj zaostrila. Po dokajšnjem premolku je odgovorila: “Mislim, da je vreden.” Pavlin šepetajoč glas je bil poln dvoma.
Vendar je Pavla naslednje dni čutila polajšanje svojega bremena in je zdravniku sama izjavila, da se smatra sposobno za temnico. Sedaj pa, ko je stala skoraj tik pred njenimi vrati, je omahovala, da se je morala oprijemati.
Sestra Serafina je sedla za orgle in zbor je čakal pripravljen, da na njen mig zapoje. Pred božjim grobom se je nizko, kakor bi res vstajala iz globin, oglasila aleluja. Pavlo je stisnilo v grlu. Njen glas je bil votel, moten in ubit, pa se je premagala dobri sestri Serafini na ljubo in je kljub temu zapela:
"Zveličar naš je vstal iz groba, vesel prepevaj, o kristjan.”
Pavla je hodila pred nebom, ki so ga nosili pazniki, in ni videla ne angelcev, naslikanih na stropu, ne Amorjev s polnimi tuli puščic na stebrih, mimo katerih je šla po stopnicah navzdol. Večno zaklenjeni izhodi iz jetnišnice so bili na stežaj odprti. Za kipcem vstalega Zveličarja se je vila procesija mimo častitljive grajske lipe, skozi drevored in za vrtovi čez mostiček na travnike in zavila pri kapelici pod hribom nazaj po drevoredu. Kakor svobodni so hodili praznično oblečeni pari kaznjenk, le tu pa tam se je na robovih pod Svetim Petrom zalesketal bajonet. Orožniki so zdaleč pazili, da bi katera izmed kaznjenk tie ušla.
Pavla se je opotekala v zboru in pela, pela, pela, dokler ji na povratku tik pri kamniti mizi ni vzela glasu pesem: “Dan presvitll, dan veselja, srčno ml pozdravljen bod’.”
Nevede se je prijela za roko ciganke Kati, ki je isti hip tudi obmolknila.
Minilo je vstajenje v kaznilnici, zvon pa je že vabil k vstajenju v župni cerkvi. Počili so topiči in streli so odjeknili od gora. Obmolknilo je prav takrat, ko je kaznjenka Pavlina Andrejčič stopila pred sestro Huberto z dvema odejama pod pazduho na dolgi spodnji hodnik. Nog skoraj ni mogla več privzdigovati. Na koncu hodnika, ko je zavila k samotnim celicam, se je okrog vogala opotekala. Sama ni vedela, kdaj je zdrknila na kolena in s povzdignjenimi lokami zaprosila: ‘Sestra Huberta! Ne v zadnjo celico. Tam straši.”
"Vas v zadnjo celico!” Sestra Huberta je bila kar užaljena: "Ho smrti bi si ne odpustila. V to stopite. Ne bo tako grozno.”
Pavla se je ozrla po lesenih tleh. V kotu je stal vrč vode, poleg njega pa hlebček kruha. Nezakurjena peč je bila čudno okrogla. Nalagalo se je vanjo s hodnika. Pošastno se je režala za njo vdolbina za nočno posodo, od zunaj zaklenjena s težko ključavnico. Okno, visoko pod stropom, je bilo zatemnjeno z močnimi lesenimi naokni-cami.
Pavla je vstopila. Nuna ji je pomagala razgrniti odeji. Pavla je obstala na njih robu. Slišala je še opomniti sestro: “Andrejčič! Če se vam bo zdelo, da vam je neznosno hudo, vam svetujem, da molite.” Pavla je samo prikimala.
Skoraj neslišno je odšla sestra Huberta. Vrata je zapirala počasi. Zarožljali so ključi in zastrla se je še linica v vratih, skozi katero je prihajal zadnji žarek svetlobe. Zunaj je bil še dan. Pavlo pa je zagrnila trda tema. Pokleknila je, padla na obraz in zaihtela: “O Bog, o Bog, o Bog!” Ulile so se ji solze in glas ji je zadrgetal: “Fiiilip!”
Na Veliko noč ob šestih zvečer je prišla Pavlo, ki je bila bolj mrtva kakor živa, rešit iz temnice bivša njena sošolka sestra Ksaverija. Obe sta glasno jokali.
TEMNI NAGELJ
Razbohotilo se je cvetje v vrtu. Ogrevalo ga je visoko poletno sonce. Z zeleno popleskano škropilnico v roki je Pavla stala ob okroglem, iz klesanega kamna zidanem tolmunu na obsežnem, z visokim zidom ograjenem cvetličnem in zelenjadnem vrtu kaznilnice. Kakor poudarjeno začrtan križ so se razhajale skozi cvetje in zelenje od kamnitega, z vodo napolnjenega kolobarja na vse štiri strani široka, z belim peskom posuta osrednja pota in se cepila v manjše križe in križčke.
Ves premočen je sredi tolmuna čepel na zloženem, z zelenim mahom obraslem kupu kamenja bronast fantiček. Od starosti in mokrote je bil tu pa tam že tudi sam zelenkast. V pridvignjeni roki je držal cev, iz katere so brizgali drobni curki vode v višavo, se razprševali in padali skozi pisano mavrico nazaj v tolmun. Pavla se je zagledala
v	valovito okrogle ude kipca. Spreletala jo je grenka misel. Njen otrok bi bil sedaj nekako prav tako velik. Ta mesec bi skoraj gotovo živela nekje pri morju. Ni si znala prav predstavljati slasti, ki bi jo užila, če bi mogla kot mati, sama oblečena v kopalno obleko, čofotati v gorki vodi ob morskem bregu z otrokom, ki je bil komaj dobro shodil. In to bi bilo kar gotovo res, če bi ne bil Filip----------
Iz vode se je pognala riba, na poti od hlevov pa je zacvilila samokolnica. Ciganka Kati je peljala gnoj za spraznjeno gredico, ki so jo kaznjenke preobračale z ravnimi lopatami in jo urejevale, da pod noč nasade nanjo novo zelenjad.
Dasi je sonce stalo že precej visoko, se je vrt še vedno kopal v obilni rosi. Vzdolž potov so se za ravno pristriženim robom zelenike vrstile enakomerno vsaksebi zasajene vrtnice. Čeprav je z njih cvetjem sestra zakristanka pridno krasila oltarje v kapeli, se je dokaj cvetov usulo tudi na vrtu. Kakor bi celo pota cvetela, so se odražali raznobarvni odpadli lističi na belem pesku.
Pavla se je sklonila in vrgla z roko iz tolmuna čebelo, ki je bila prišla pit, pa je padla v vodo. Utegnila bi utoniti. Pa četudi bi Pavla prav zagotovo vedela, da se ji posreči

Sj	in sanja sanje davnih srečnih dni .	. .
priplavati h kraju, bi rešila pridno živalco. Počemu naj bi se mučila do skrajne upehanosti.
Pavla je opazovala čebelico, kako si je otresla krilca in odletela. Kaj hitro jo je zgubila izpred oči. V vonju cvetja, ki ga je bil dahnil vanjo rahel veter, se je pričela Pavla primerjati s pravkar rešeno čebelo. Iz varnega samostanskega zatišja je priletela k tolmunu ljubezni in se hotela iz njega napiti. Je pa padla v jezne valove življenja. Za njo ni roke in je tudi ne more biti, ki bi jo zajela z vodo vred v perišče in ji pomagala na trdna tla. Sama mora plavati k bregu, kjer jo čaka novo življenje. Ne sme omagati in utoniti. Zavoljo očeta in matere ne sme. Pa tudi zavoljo Filipa ne, čeprav se je bila na veliko noč v temnici namenila, da se morebiti več ne vrne k njemu. Kaj hoče. Samo sebe bi grdila. Ljudje bi rekli, da je Filip več ne mara. In pa: ljubezen vse prenese, vse pretrpi. Kakor bi se ji bila zajedla v kosti, se je prestane groze v temnici še vedno plašno spominjala.
Z obrazom obrnjenim v tla, je Pavla dolgo ležala na obeh odejah, na kateri je bila legla, ko jo je bila pri belem dnevu zagrnila trda tema. Čelo je naslanjala na lakti, sedaj na levo pa spet na desno, kakor ji je bila pač katera roka zaspala, da jo je morala premenjati. Misliti ni mogla nič. Preveč jo je bilo strah teme. Zoper njeno voljo je telo večkrat zadrgetalo. Podrgetavalo je v čimdalje krajših presledkih. Iz oči pa so ji lile solze in močile zoprno vonjajočo odejo.
Že dokaj obnemogla si je Pavla nevede otrla solze in ves vlažen obraz v vogal pregrajene odeje. Resasta volna jo je zbodla v nežno polt in jo zdramila iz onemoglosti. Od gnusa se je zdrznila. Spomnila se je, da se je gotovo v prav isto odejo pred njo brisala že marsikatera kaznjenka. Pokleknila je in se dotipala do stene. Z dlanmi oprta v hladni zid je čakala, da bi slišala biti uro. Zunaj pa je bilo vse tiho. Čas se je vlekel v neskončnost. Pavlo je pričel boleti hrbet in omagovale so ji noge. Zavedela se je, da zastonj upa. Dognala je, da doneči udarci kladiv ob bronaste zvonove ne morejo prodreti v tesno zaprto samotno celico. Čemu bi se še dalje varala. Obrnila se je naokrog, sedla in se s hrbtom naslonila na zid.
Kot samostanska gojenka je včasih iz domotožja z drugimi vred štela dneve in ure in celo četrti, kdaj se prično počitnice, da jo zopet odpelje vlak v sončna Brda. V najhujši grozi, ki jo je bila doletela doslej v življenju, je pa za njo čas obstal. Niti tega ne more vedeti, če je še dan ali že noč.
Pavla je tanko prisluhnila. V vsej veliki hiši se ni nič ganilo. Pavla pa ni mogla več dvomiti, da je zunaj gluha noč in da je morebiti ura že enajst, ura strahov. Čim bolj sl je dopovedovala, da strahov ni, tem bolj jo je postajalo groza, ki jo je večala še zavest, da je v vsem dolgem oddelku samotnih celic popolnoma sama. V počaščenje vstalega Zveličarja so se vsem drugim odprla vrata teme, njo pa so kakor živo pokopali v grob. In kaj, če se strah, ki v zadnji celici ne bo našel žive duše, priplazi k njej? Pavlo je zmrazilo. Po vsem životu jo je oblila kurja polt. Vstala je. S predse stegnjenimi rokami je podrsajoče odtavala proti nasprotni, prazni steni. Tam, se ji je zdelo, bo še najbolj varno. Ne okna ne vrat ni bilo blizu in tudi nagnusne dupline in peči ne, da bi se morebiti strah ne priplazil po dimniku navzdol in jo objel s svojimi pošastnimi rokami. Hotela je biti predvsem varna v hrbet in se je spet naslonila na hladen zid. Roke je razprostrla, da se je prepričala, če morda ne stoji preblizu prednjega ali zadnjega kota. Tako bi ji rablji raztegnili roki, če bi jo pribili na križ.
Kakor bi se bili prišli posmehovat po nedolžnem križani, so se iz teme zarežali spačeni obrazi. Da bi jih ne gledala, je Pavla zamižala. Skaženi človeški prividi so skopneli. Jasno pa je videla prihajati naravnost proti sebi izbrano oblečenega in veselo nasmejanega doktorja Filipa Andrejčiča, svojega moža. Roke so ji omahnile. Naglo je skrčila prste v pesti in si jih pritisnila na prsi. Srce ji je burno utripalo. Glasno je poočitala: “Filip! Le kako se moreš smejati?” Čudno votlo je odjeknila njena tožba od praznih sten. Zamrla je v vsesplošni tišini. Pavline misli pa je vzvalovila do krvaveče bolečine.
Filip! Kje neki se mudi sedaj? Se li kaj spominja, kaj je po razsodbi njegovo ženo zavoljo njega doletelo na letošnjo veliko noč?
Ob dozdevni url strahov v hladni temnici je bilo Pavli razodeto, česar se do takrat ni nikoli domislila. Vedela je, da bi moral njen mož, če ni tega storil doslej, vsaj te praznike sam od sebe in od nikogar priganjan iti v Brda k njenim staršem in se ves razodeti. Če se boji očeta, naj bi se zaupal mated, ki ni ugovarjala proti njegovi snubitvi in mu je bila koj od vsega početka naklonjena. Brez njene prikrite potuhe bi ona najbrže ne postala nikoli Filipova žena in še manj kdaj kaznjenka v Begunjah. Kakor je mama znala takrat urediti njemu v prid, tako bi umela tudi sedaj vse prav uravnati in nje bi več ne skrbelo, kako naj sporoči očetu, naj je nikar ne obsoja.
Misel na starše je Pavlo za hip umirila. Vsi prividi so zginili. Zavedela se je, da jo v hrbet močno mrazi. Opogumila se je in stopila korak od zidu.
Utegne se pa zgoditi, je premišljala naprej, da se Filip nič ne bo spomnil nanjo, da se ne bo oglasil v Brdih in da bo praznike preživel v veseli družbi. Če to kdaj zve in dožene, se po prestani kazni več ne vrne k njemu.
Zunaj je od svetega Petra navzdol zamolklo zahrumelo. Pavla se je prestrašila In se stisnila nazaj k zidu. Hrup je naraščal. Naenkrat pa se je okno potreslo, kakor bi se
bil zaletel vanj velik netopir. Pavla je zakričala in planila skozi temo nazaj proti odejam.
Zgrešila je smer, zadela v nasprotno steno in se udarila na čelo.
Preplašena od ponovnega butanja v okno je počenila na tla. Plazeč se po vseh štirih je dokaj dolgo iskala, preden je našla svoje zasilno ležišče. Ves čas pa jo je podila misel, da jo strah preganja zavoljo namere, da se več ne vrne k možu. Vsa preplašena si je zavila čez ruto predpasnik in se zaodela čez glavo. Bilo jo je strah, da je komaj upala dihati Večkrat je poskusila moliti, pa se je vselej koj zmedla. V okno pa se je zaganjalo, kakor bi hotel vampir vdreti k njej in ji izpiti kri. Za drobno lučko, ki bi jo kdo prižgal, bi dala pol življenja. Cas se pa ni hotel nikamor premakniti. Pavla je mislila, da skoprni.
Pod Pavlo je zamolkel grom potresel tla. In še eden in še eden. Hkrati je pa pribrnelo v temnico potrkovanje. Zvonov se še svoj živ dan ni Pavla tako razveselila kakor tokrat. Iz bližnjega stolpa župne cerkve so oznanili dan in vzeli strahovom vso moč. Pavla se je spet vsaj približno znašla v času. Groza jo je minila. Vstala je in komaj slišno zapela:
“Dan presvitli, dan veselja, srčno mi pozdravljen bod!”
Pavla je zajokala, pa ni vedela, ali od bridkosti ali od veselja, da je rešena izpod oblasti strahov. Bilo ji je mraz. Pričela je topotati z nogami in zamahovati z rokami. Potem se je previdno dotipala do vdolbine za pečjo. Bala se je, da ne bi segla z roko na notranjo stran nočne posode.
Ne, kruha ni mogla jesti, srknila pa je požirek vode. Varno je postavila vrč nazaj na tla, v okno pa je spet buhnilo. Sedaj je Pavla spoznala, da se je ponoči veter zaletaval v okno, njo pa je bilo po nepotrebnem do smrti groza.
Pavla je pričela moliti. V temnico so prihajali pridušeni glasovi. Kaznilnica je vstajala k prazničnemu življenju. Pavle se je pa lotil kašelj. Nadlegoval jo je ves dan in čimdalje huje.
Do skrajnosti omagana je Pavla legla na resasti odeji. Rada bi trdno zaspala, pa se ji niti zadremati ni hotelo. Tik preden so se odprla vrata in je večerna svetloba prepodila iz celice rabeljsko temo, si je Pavla zaželela umreti.
Še isti večer je sestra prednica odredila, da mora kaz njenka Andrejčič takoj v bolnišnico. Ob lipovem čaju, za katerega je bila cvetje pomagala sama natrgati, je prebirala pismo, v katerem je za veliko noč sporočala mama svoji preljubi Pavlici, da se ji je le posrečilo pregovoriti očeta in jo prideta poleti oba obiskat. Kakor nebo jasno-modro pismo je večkrat zapovrstjo poljubila. Razglednico pa, na kateri ji je Filip voščil samo suhoparno veselo alelujo, bi bila najraje strgala in vrgla v peč. Pa niso več kurili.
Ko je Pavla prebolela angino, so jo po posredovanju gospoda kurata pridelili na vrt, kjer je nihče ni priganjal k delu. Prav danes bi težko pohitela. Pričakovala je obiska staršev. Mame se je zelo veselila. Snidenje z očetom jo je pa precej skrbelo.
Pavla je zajela s škropilnico vodo iz tolmuna, se nagnila postrani in jo odnesla proti cvetličnjaku. Nič se ji ni mudilo. Celo ustavljala se je in ogledovala posamezno cvetje: bele in modre zvončnice, osipajoče se make, vrtnice nageljnov in košate zvončnice, razrastle georgine in še dokaj drugega cvetja, kateremu vsemu niti imena ni vedela. Ob jutranji steni cvetličnjaka je postavila škropilnico na tla. Ozrla se je nazaj po vrtu. V soncu in rosi so se prelivale barve prek cvetočih gredic. Prav na drugem koncu so kaznjenke trgale stročji fižol. Kati in vrtnarica, sestra Hiacinta, sta pa ob gorkih gredah luščili grah.
Pavlo je cvetoči vrt omamljal. Kar nekako pozabila je, da mora zaliti nageljnom. Počasi se je obrnila naokrog In obstrmela pred zagorelo rdečim plazom, ki se je spuščal po steni navzdol. Prav na sredi je ugledala tri velike temne cvete, kakršnih še svoj živ dan ni nikjer videla. Hkrati ji je prišlo na misel, da je zunaj dokaj vesele ljubezni
SKRIVNOST BOŽICA
Sveta noč, blažena noč
Na ravnici sredi skomnih hiš stoji cerkev. Nocoj okna vasi ne spijo. Vsa žare v lučili. Vsa: po hišicah svetijo skozi majhna okna revnih kočarjev in se blešče skozi šipe redkih večjih posestnikov. Nad vaščani pa žari tudi cerkev. Njena rdeča večna lučka je utonila v svetlobi, ki skozi velika cerkvena okna seva po vsej vasi in sveti prav gor v strmo pobočje hribov, W ?iva oprala žunniie.
Veliki zvon je zapel in povedal, da je le še ena ura do skrivnostne polnoči, do svetlega spomina, ko se je svetu rodil Odrešenik. Velikemu zvonu sta se pridružila še dva zvona, manjša, in vsi so ubrano in slovesno zapeli: “Nocoj je sveta, skrivnostna noč!”
Tedaj pa so se zasvetile bakle po strmih potih s hribov. Fantje in možaki, krepka hribovska dekleta — vsi so si svetili z baklami in hite-
li	k razsvetljeni cerkvi, da počaste in molijo spomin Od-rešenikovega rojstva v bornem hlevcu. Vsa svetla noč je žar žive vere in tople hvaležnosti božjemu Odrešeniku, ki je prišel na svet, da zbegano človeštvo otme s poukom pogube in se zanj žrtvuje križu.
kakor veselo cveto vsi drugi nageljni, njena pa je podobna temnemu cvetu. Ko bi vsaj vedela, če bo njeno izgorevanje kdaj nagrajeno. Morebiti pa od vsega dolgoletnega trpljenja ne bo ostalo nič drugega kakor kupček pepela, ki ga prva sapica razpihne.
Pavla je pristavila nizke stopnice, da je mogla doseči dokaj visoko od tal postavljene lončke. Temnemu nageljnu je prilila nazadnje. Počasi, skoraj po kapljah je tekla voda iz cevi škropilnice. Sproti je pronicala s površja h koreninam. Pavli se je zdelo, da črna prst vpija njeno srčno kri. Stopila je nazaj na tla, pospravila stopnice in škropilnico in s povešeno glavo odšla proti gorkim gredam.
"Sestra Hiacinta! Zalila sem, kaj naj delam naprej?” Pavlin glas je bil moten. Nuna, po letih bi bila lahko njena mati, jo je zaskrbljeno pogledala: “Pa se niste menda spet prehladili, Andrejčič?”
“Ne, nisem se, častita.” Pavla je spet spregovorila jasno. Ni mogla prikriti, kako dobro ji je dela materinsko prijazna beseda. Dobrohotno se smehljaje je sestra vrtnarica odredila, da naj Pavla s škarjami obreže georginam ovelo cvetje, ki kazi vrt. Odkazanega ji dela se je Pavla razveselila. Sama bo med rožami. Odhitela je v cvetličnjak po košaro in škarje.
Pavla je pričela obrezovati pred čebelnjakom. Čebele so hrumele prek nje. Nič se ni bala, da bi jo katera pičila. Zato so pa nekatere kaznjenke včasih znale pikati z jezikom strupeno kakor ose. Pa zadnje čase niso upale biti več drzne. Opazile so, da nune s Pavlo ravnajo kar najbolj prizanesljivo. Nobeni drugi kaznjenki bi ne dovolile hoditi tako svobodno po vrtu, kakor sme ona. In večkrat jo katera pogleda, kakor jo je prej sestra Hiacinta. Oči jasno povedo, da ne verjamejo v krivdo Pavle doktor Andrej-čičeve.
Pavla je pričela poltiho peti. Spremljal jo je brenčeči zbor čebel. Košara pa se je čimdalje više polnila z odcve-limi in ovelimi cveti.
Bližajoči se koraki po pesku in umerjeno pritajevana govorica so Pavlo predramili iz zamišljenosti. Po hoji je spoznala, da ne prihajajo sestre, še manj pa kaznjenke. Dvignila je glavo in pogledala. Roka ji je sama spustila škarje v košaro med odrezane georgine. Proti njej so
prihajali sestra Ksaverija in mama, za njima pa Novakova Minca in oče.
Pavla je za hip obstala. I^otem pa sta obe hkrati, ona sama in mama, pohiteli naproti druga drugi. Segli sta si v ioko in se poljubili. Roki se kar nista hoteli razkleniti. Gledali sta se v oči, reči pa nobena ni vedela nič. Celo očeta, ki je stal poleg in čakal, sta pozabili. Sam je moral opozoriti nase. Spregovoril je in voščil: "Dober dan, Pavla!”
“Dober dan, tata!” Pavla je očeta poljubila na lice, čeprav je bila to navado že opustila, odkar ni več hodila v samostanske šole. Oče ji je poljub vrnil. Da bi pa prikril, kako nerodno mu je, ko stoji pred njim njegov edini otrok v kazenski obleki, je brž pripomnil: “Vrtove pa imate urejene kakor nobena druga graščina ne. Seveda. Dovolj rok.”
Pavla je brž pokazala, kako je obrezovala georgine. Oče se je pa bridko nasmehnil: “Vidim, da si pridna. Polno košaro cvetja si bila že nabrala. Samo uvelo je. Doma si trgala vedno samo najlepše razcvelo. Seveda. Tukaj je pa tako veselje prihranjeno drugim.” Po njegovem gladko obritem obrazu se je razlila bolestna grenkoba.
Bolj da ga potolaži kakor pa je bilo res, je Pavla povedala: “Tudi jaz smem včasih trgati sveže cvetje.”
Oče se je začudil: “Talco.” Videti pa je bilo, da nič kaj trdno ne verjame.
“Gospod Gradišnik!” je pristopila Minca: "Najbolj prav bo, če greva midva kar sedaj gledat konje in živino. Pavla in mama naj se pa ta čas pogovarjata. Saj veste, da so ženske rade včasih same.”
“Kakor veste,” je bil oče koj voljan. “Saj v takile hiši se tisti, ki je ni dobro vajen, kar ne zna in ne upa nikamor obrniti. Le nerodno mi je, gospa Potočnikova, ko imate toliko sitnosti z nama. S kočijo ste naju prišli iskat na Brezje, spremljate naju in še kosit da morava k vam, ste rekli. Vse preveč. Kdaj vam bom povrnil.”
“Vam nič ne posojujem,” je Minca odvrnila ljubeznivo in odpeljala Gradišnika proti gospodarskim poslopjem.

Št. 1. Sheboygan, Wis. Glavno sejo naše podružnice bomo imele IG. dec., to je tretjo nedeljo, popoldne ob 2. uri v cerkveni dvorani. Prosimo vse članice, da se te letne seje udeležite, ker imamo več važnih reči za razmotrivati. Volile bomo tudi nov odbor za prihodnje leto. Po seji bomo imele kratek program; videle boste slike z lanske prireditve ob 35-letnici naše podružnice in tudi krasne slike iz stare domovine.

Št. 3. Pueblo, Colo. Ker je glavna seja 5. dec. važna zaradi volitev novega odbora, prosim vse članice, da se je gotovo udeleže. Seji bo sledila božična zabava.
Naša kampanja je v polnem teku, kakor želi naša spoštovana gl. preds. A. Tanko. Dolžnost vsake članice je, da pomaga pri skupnem delu. Zato pridobivajte nove članice na čast naši glavni predsednici! S pridobivanjem članic pa razveselimo tudi našo plemenito ustanoviteljico go. Marie Pris-land, SŽZ pa bo lepo napredovala.
V	letu 19G2 smo imele do sedaj, ko to pišem, pet smrtnih slučajev. Po dolgi in mučni bolezni je umrla naša sosestra Antoinette Mutz z dekliškim
imenom Tončka Meglen. Bila je še mlada, tako da kar verjeti ne moremo, da jo je ljubi Bog že poklical v večnost. Mnogo maš se je darovalo zanjo, imela pa je tudi veliko cvetlic, najlepši pa je bil šopek vrtnic njenega soproga, ki jo je prisrčno ljubil. Naj ji sveti večna luč! Preostalim naše iskreno sožalje!
Kot glavna odbornica SŽZ sem bila povabljena na proslavo 50-letnice obstoja tukajšnjega društva Slovanske zveze Western Star št. IG. Imeli so banket in primeren program. Razume se, da je bilo besedilo in govor v angleškem jeziku. Vendar je naš spoštovani gl. predsednik Mr. Mike Popovich lepo po slovensko razložil pomen te organizacije. Sosestra Mary Kogovšek, ki je gl. podpredsednica naše organizacije, je lepo čestitala društvu in vsem navzočim gostom. Društvu Western Star želimo še mnogo lepih jubilejnih let!
Kadar rabite cvetlice, šopke, vence priporočam, da obiščete Laurine Flower shop, ki jo ima naša članica Johana Skul poročena Morgoson. Ona vam bo vedno ustregla tako, da boste zadovoljne. Cene so zmerne, postrežba pa solidna. Oglejte si njen oglas v naši Zarji za božične praznike! Če pa bi rade lepo in mladostno izgledale, pa se oglasite pri Carol Drobnich ki je frizerka. Zelo spretno ureja lase in zadovoljne boste z njenim delom.

St. 7. Forest City, Pa. Drage sestre! Ker se že dolgo časa nisem oglasila v Zarjo, moram pa danes poročati novice naše podružnice, ki pa niso preveč vesele. Naša agilna tajnica Christine Menart je že precej časa bolna. Seveda je šla na pregled, a je mislila, da ni nič nevarnega. Ko ni bilo nič boljše, se je morala podati na operacijo in se je po njej prav dobro počutila. Po dveh tednih ji je zdravnik dovolil, da gre lahko domov in hodi. Ker pa ni bila dovolj previdna, je zbolela na nogi. Sedaj, ko to pišem, se nahaja v St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carbon-dale, Pa. Doktor pravi, da bo morala ostati tam najmanj 10 dni, dokler ne bo noga boljša. Upamo na božjo pomoč, da bo kmalu popolnoma zdrava, saj jo zelo pogrešamo posebno na naših sejah. Assesment pobira sedaj sestra Josephine Gostisha, ki je tudi za to delo dobro izvežbana. Upamo, da Bog Christini kmalu vrne zdravje, da bo že lahko prišla na našo decembrsko sejo. Na tej seji bomo morale urediti več stvari v korist podružnice in izvoliti nov odbor za prihodnje leto. Nekdo bo srečen na tej seji, ker je naša dobra sestra Katerina Žigon darovala lepo blazino in predpasnik — ročno delo. Hvala lepa, Katerina, Bog ti povrni z dobrim zdravjem! POROKE
V avgustu sta slavila 50 letnico zakonskega življenja naša poznana rojaka Mr. in Mrs. Anton Strukel. Sprejem gostov je bil na domu njune hčerke Mrs. Turk. Slavljenca imata štiri otroke, 11 vnukov in enega pravnuka. Mr. Strukel je upokojen, zaposlen je bil pri New York Central železnici. Bog ju živi še na mnoga leta!	S.
mas Party in zapele kako slovensko božično pesem, saj slovenske pesmi tako zelo pogrešamo.
Mary Miklowcic je bila nekaj tednov v bolnici, sadaj pa se zdravi doma in ji hčerka Mary lepo streže. Naša dolgoletna članica Mary Verhovsek je tildi toliko boljša, da jo vidimo vsak dan v cerkvi pri sv. maši. Več naših članic kakor Mildred Dutchman in Mary Masi je na poti okrevanja. Vsem želimo ljubega zdravja!
Naše članice Fannie Lavriha, Jennie Matjen in njena mati Mrs. Žagar so bile na obisku v Clevelandu pred kratkim in so se tam prav dobro imele. Bila je že 4. ura zjutraj, ko so še obujale spomine na stare čase. Mrs. Mary Telban se tudi že pripravlja, da bo šla čez zimo v Cleveland, Ohio, k svojima hčerkama Mrs. Joseph Saver in Mrs. Edward Kovačič. You come back next spring, Mary?

Št. 10. Cleveland, Ohio. Ko pišem to poročilo, je zunaj zima in vse pod snegom. Živo srebro v toplomeru je padlo od 60 stopinj na 24. Ne morem si misliti, od kje se je ta snežna vihra vzela. Vsi ljudje so bili zelo iznena-deni. Prvi dan smo še listje grabili in pometali, drugi dan pa je naneslo
5	inchov snega. Vse pozne cvetlice so prej pomrznile, predno so se razcvetele. Črni oblaki se zbirajo nad celim svetom in ne samo pri nas. Kaj nam bodo le prinesli? Bog daj vladarjem tega sveta pamet, da bi sklenili mir, saj vojna ne prinese drugega kot samo gorje ne samo premagancu, temveč tudi zmagovalcu!
Naša dobra in zelo aktivna članica Millie Novak iz 15603. School Ave., je prestala težko operacijo na nogah, vendar se sedaj že zdravi doma. Vse članice in prijateljice želimo dobri ženi, da bi se hitro popolnoma popravila, ljubega zdravja želimo tudi vsem bolnim sestram. Sestra Millie je naša šoferka za društvo in osebno tudi. Če jo kdo kdaj potrebuje, nikdar ničesar ne odreče. Njeno dobroto poznam iz lastne izkušnje, saj sem njena soseda.
Zopet je ena naših članic slavila zlato poroko. To sta Mr. in Mrs. Anton in Antonija Novak. Poroka se je vršila 14. okt. s sv. mašo v cerkvi Marije Vnebovzete, na Holmes Ave., ob navzočnosti njunih hčera in vnukov tor sorodnikov in prijateljev. Znova ju je poročil č. g. župnik Jager. Izgleda-la sta tako mladostno, kakor da bi se prvič poročila. Zares veselje je gledati naše pionirje, ki obhajajo svoj zlati jubilej, a kljub prestanemu trpljenju izgledajo še trdni in zdravi.
Ko bo ta dopis zagledal beli dan, bomo že v decembru. Zato vabim vse članice, da pridejo na sejo 11. dec. Posebno prosim, da se udeleže seje tiste sestre, ki letos še niso bile na seji, ker bomo volile nov odbor in imamo še več drugih važnih reči za urediti. Na sejo pridite tudi vse tiste, ki dolgujete članarino, in jo poravnajte, da bo imela tajnica knjige urejene za prihodnje leto.
Sedaj pa voščim vsem članicam in gl. odbornicam blagoslovljene in zdrave božične praznike in v novem letu 1963 povsod polno napredka!

Št. 12. Milwaukee, Wis. Vse članice vabim na glavno letno sejo 5. deo. ob
1.	uri popoldne v cerkveni dvorani. Volile boste nove odbornice za leto 1963; zato pridite v velikem številu! Hvala podružnicam št. 1, 17, 42 za udeležbo na proslavi naše 35 letnice.
Kruta smrt je zopet posegla v našo podružnico in nam vzela sestro Anno Ramšak — Trishkovetz. Zapustila je štiri hčere in več drugih sorodnikov. Naj v miru počiva! Preostalim pa izrekamo naše globoko sožalje!
Vse tiste, ki nimate poravnanega as-sesmenta, prosim, da sigurno pridete na sejo in ga poravnate, da bodo knjige koncem leta 1962 v redu.
Vsem članicam, ki imate še letos rojstne dneve, želim vse najboljše! Vsem bolnim članicam želim ljubega zdravja! Pozdrav gl. uradnicam, članicam naše zveze, posebno pa sestram pri št. 12!

št. 13. San Francisco, Calif. Pred Vsemi sveti je bilo pri nas veliko pogrebov; naši starejši se kar eden za drugim selijo v večnost. Tako je 26. okt. umrla sestra Mary Fabian, mama naše narodne pevke Anni J. Judnich.
Imela je krasen pogreb in pet g. duhovnikov je streglo pri sv. maši, pri kateri je libero pel v slovenskem jeziku naš g. župnik Vodušek. Odpeval je naš glasbeni umetnik Aleš Limenc. Lepo je intoniral “Vigred se povrne’-tenorist Anton Aslo. Pri pogrebnem zavodu je recitirala naša državna predsednica Rose Škof poslovilnico. Pokojna je dočakala visoko starost. Zu-pustila je 5 otrok, 8 vnukov, 7 pravnukov in 3 brate. Vsi smo je ljubili in spoštovali. Tudi meni je nadomeščala mamo, ki sem jo izgubila še kot mlada deklica. V imenu družine sestre Mary Fabian se zahvaljujem vsem za molitve, sv. maše, prekrasne vence, posebno pa g. Vodušku za tolažilne besede, gospodama Dabovicliu in Miha-vilovichu, hrvaškima duhovnikoma, ki sta prisostvovala sv. maši, g. Sepku, češkemu gostu v naši fari, ki je stregel pri sv. maši. Iskrena hvala za prisotnost pri sv. maši g. biseromašni-ku in slovenskemu pisatelju George Trunku.
Pred dnevi smo brali v časopisu o smrti našega slovenskega poročevalca rubrike “Vsak po svoje” g. Terbovca. Slovenski narod v Ameriki je z njim izgubil tako enega najuglednejših poročevalcev tako imenovanega slovenskega Will Rogersa.
Naše sestre so prišle nazaj s ha-wajskih počitnic prav vesele. Večerja v Slovenskem domu je bila izvrstna. Prisrčna hvala našim izvrstnim kuharicam!
Pozdrav našim bolnim članicam, posebno Mrs. Slane in Mary Drashar v Chicagi. Zadnjo vem, da je izguba naše dobre mame v srce zadela, ker jo je zelo ljubila.

2.	sept. lotos je minilo 50 let najinega skupnega zakonskega življenja. Za ta jubilej so nama najini trije otroci: sinova Anton in Albert in hčerka Angie pripravili prijetno presenečenje, za kar se vsem prav lepo zahvalim. Moj soprog je prišel v Ameriko v Lead-ville, Colo., leta 1903 iz vasi Zalog pri Škofljici na Dolenjskem. Jaz pa sem bila rojena Adamič v Dolšakih, župnija Rob na Dolenjskem. V Leadville, Colo., sem prišla leta 1911. Že leta 1912 sva se poročila v Leadvillu, v cerkvi sv. Jožefa. Poročil naju je sedaj že davno umrli Rev. Johan Perše. Razen omenjenih otrok imava še dva vnuka in tri vnukinje. Leta 1916. sva se preselila na West Allis, Wis. Prav prisrčno se zahvaljujeva našim dobrim prijateljem, ki so nama ob najinem zlatem jubileju čestitali in darovali krasna darila: Mr. in Mrs. Ludvik Ko-šorok, Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Mohar, Mr. in Mrs. A. Kosmina in hči Mary, Mrs. Vickie Kem in sinovi, Mr. Joseph Be-latt in hči Virginia, Mr. in Mrs. Earl Norton, Mr. in Mrs. Frank Kern, Mr.
Št. 15. Newburgh, Ohio. Oktobrska seja je bila lepo obiskana. Sedaj pa vabim vse članice na sejo v decembru, ki bo glavna letna seja. Pridite v kar največjem številu, ker imamo zelo pester program! Pomeniti se moramo, kako bomo proslavile 35-letnico obstoja naše podružnice, ki bo 19. maja 19G3. Na tej seji bomo imele tudi božičnico in izmenjavo daril v vrednosti enega dolarja. Še enkrat prosim vse članice za sodelovanje.
Iskreno sožalje Ani Habjan zaradi izgube ljubljenege soproga! Njemu pa naj sveti večna luč!
Več članic je bolnih, nekaj že dalj časa. Vse želim, naj jim božje Dete in Marija podelita ljubo zdravje! Našemu duhovnemu vodju Rev. Msgr. J. Omanu želim zdrav in vesel Božič in srečno novo leto 19G3. Enako želim vsem gl. odbornicam, članicam SŽZ po širni Ameriki, posebno pa članicam pri št. 15. ter nasvidenje na seji 12. decembra !

Št. 17. West Allis, Wise. Kot dolgoletna članica podr. št. 17. zelo rada prebiram Zarjo. Ker sem prepričana, da jo rade berete tudi druge članice, vas prosim, da pridete v decembru na našo letno glavno sejo, saj je to vaša dolžnost. Na seji bodo volitve novega odbora za leto 1963. Vsaka naj prinese s seboj darilce v vrednosti
1	dolarja, ker si bomo izmenjale božična darila. Seja bo kot navadno tretjo nedeljo v mesecu v običajnih prostorih, soba št. 3. Udeležba na oktobrski seji je bila lepa. Pristopile so tri nove članice, ki jim kličemo prisrčno dobrodošlico!

Ko sem prišla na sejo, so me s čestitkami presenetile vse članice. Mrs. Petrich mi je pripela lep šopek In mi dala cake, ki ga je sama naredila. Po seji smo imele lunch. Najlepša hvala za poslana darila Mr. in Mrs. Anton Florjan, Mr. in Mrs. Anthony Marolt in društvu Marije Pomočnice kristjanov št. 165. Prisrčna hvala tudi članicam SŽZ podružnice št. 17. za voščila, karte in čestitke. Prireditev nama bo ostala v trajnem spominu kot izraz prijateljstva vseh naših znancev. Naj ljubi Bog blagoslovi in obilo povrne vsem!

Št. 18. Cleveland, Ohio. — Vesele božične praznike in srečno novo leto želim članicam po celi Ameriki, posebno pa pri podružnici št. 18. Vesela sem bila, da je bila udeležba na novembrski seji povoljna. Obhajale smo rojstne dneve Ivanke Grebenc in Albine Malovašič in smo se zares lepo imele. Zares je lahko vsaki žal, če ni prišla na to sejo. Lepo prosim, da se vse udeležite decembrske seje, ker bomo volile nov odbor.

Št. 19. Eveleth, Minn. Leto se pomika proti koncu in zadnja seja v decembru je obenem tudi glavna seja, na kateri volimo odbornice in razpravljamo o načrtih za prihodnje leto. Seja se bo vršila 13. decembra v običajnih prostorih. Prosim vse članice, ki nimajo posebnega zadržka, da se seje udeležite. Ker v poletnem času nismo imele sej, bi bilo prav, da se vsaj ene te zadnje udeležite. Skupno se bomo veliko pogovorile in tudi razveselile. S seboj pripeljite tudi vaše znanke, z veseljem jih bomo sprejele v našo zvezo, če še niso naše članice. Kot vsako leto v tem času bomo tudi letos imele po seji zabavo. Imele bomo prigrizek in skupno pele lepe božične pesmi. V dvorani bom že ob sedmi url in bom pobirala assess-
ment. Prosim, da vsaka poravna zaostali dolg, da bom ob koncu leta lahko uredila knjige. Na prihodnji seji boste slišale poročilo o izidu in dobičku prodaje peciva 17. nov.
Več naših članic je na bolniški listi: Mrs. Gornik, Mrs. Drobnich, Mrs. Skri-nar, Mrs. Bartulas in naša predsednica Mrs. Nemgar. Slednji dve sta v bolnici. Sestra Liola Brine je srečno prestala operacijo in se sedaj nahaja doma. Vsem bolnim članicam želimo čimprejšnjega okrevanja. Naj jim novorojeno Dete podeli ljubo zdravje! Želimo jim, da bi vesele in srečne posebno pa zdrave prišle na decembrsko sejo. Mnogo zdravja in še mnogo let želim vsem članicam ki bodo v decembru obhajale svoj rojstni dan.

Št. 20. Joliet, III. Naše sožalje družini Mrs. Anna Vranich, kateri je umrl soprog. Zapušča odraslo družino. Mrs. Vranich je z Belle Ave. in se je prej pisala Anna Kozar.
V	bolnici je bila Mrs. Helen Pluth iz Elizabeth St. Mrs. Jennie Kanopek se je vrnila nazaj v bolnico na operacijo, medtem pa je bila doma deset dni. Mrs. Anna Ferlin in Mrs. Josephine Hochevar se zdravita doma, odkar sta se vrnili iz bolnice.
Ko bo prišla ta Zarja v vaše roke. bodo pred nami že lepi božični prazniki. Želim vam vsem, da bi jih obhajale zdrave in vesele. Ob tem dnevu pa vsi skupaj molimo za mir na svetu.
Ker bo naša letna seja dne 16. dec., ste vabljene vse članice, da pridete v polnem številu na to sejo. Tokrat se bomo pogovorile, kaj bomo ukrenile za prihodnje leto.

Zopet je eno leto odšlo v večnost in Zveza je za eno leto starejša. V tem času se mora sleherna članica spomniti na Vaše delo, ki ga še vedno o-pravljate za napredek žena in deklet v organizaciji, ki ste jo Vi ustanovili. Hitro so pozabljena dobra dela, toda delo, ki ste ga pa Vi podvzell, ko ste ustnovili ŽENSKO organizacijo, se pa ne more pozabiti. Bog Vas živi Mrs. Prlsland še na mnoga leta! Naj Vas Bog ohrani zdravo še dolgo let, da bi imeli dobro voljo in moč za nadaljnje delo, ki Vas čaka pri organizaciji, ki ste jo Vi ustanovili.______________J. E.
Št. 21. Cleveland, Ohio. Smo v mesecu novembru, ko se spominjamo naših rajnih. Dolžnost članic SŽZ pa je. da se v molitvah spominjamo vseh naših sosester, ki so šle pred nami v večnost. Ljubi Bog naj jim da večni mir In pokoj!
Na bolniški listi so sestre: Mary Rahne, Mary Senkar In sestra Starži-šele. Nevarno je tudi zbolel soprog sestre Rozi Kozich. Vse bolne priporočilni v gorečo molitev. Naj jim Marija Pomagaj izprosi pri liogu ljubo zdravje!
Vsem, ki v decembru obhajate rojstne dneve, želim mnogo sreče in veselja.
Priporočam našo sestro Frances Cimperman, ki prodaja hiše, da se v potrebi obrnete nanjo. Z veseljem vam bo v vsem ustregla. Tebi Frances pa želim mnogo kupcev, sreče in u-spehov v podjetju.
Naslednja seja bo zadnja v letu, božična in glavna. Vsaka članica naj prinese darilo v vrednosti enega dolarja. Na seji bomo volile nov odbor. Lepo prosim, da ne zamudite te važne seje. Če je le mogoče pripeljite s seboj kako novo članico.

Št. 24. La Salle, III. Zopet se nam bliža starka zima; zelo je že mrzlo in tudi sneg je že padal. Ker se bliža božič, želim vsem članicam po širni Ameriki, posebno pa glavnim odbornicam vesele praznike in srečno novo leto 1963. Da bi ga vse zdrave dočakale !
Smrt je zopet posegla v našo podružnico. To pot je pobrala sosestro Mary Livek, ki je dočakala lepo starost 82 let. Bila je v bolnici več kot mesec dni. Pokojna Mary zapušča pet hčera 111 dva sinova. Naj ji bo Bog dober plačnik! Sorodnikom pa izrekamo naše sožalje.
Ker je sedaj velika kampanja, prosim vse članice, da z novimi članicami nadomeste vrzel, ki nam jo je naredila smrt, ko nam je letos vzela že štiri članice. Upam, da boste vse članice prišle na decembrsko sejo in s seboj pripeljale še kako novo članico.
V	bolnici se nahajata Mary Savnik in Ana Pelko, ki je tako nesrečno padla, da si je zlomila roko na dveh mestih. Doma leži težko bolna Metka Plazar, iz bolnice pa se je pred nedavnim vrnila Triza Ajster. Daj Bog vsem bolnim članicam ljubega zdravja, ki je največje bogastvo na svetu!

Št. 26. Pittsburgh, Pa. Smo v mesecu decembru, ko se vršijo glavne seje in božičnice. Naša glavna seja bo v torek, dne 18. decembra ob pol osmih zvečer v običajnih prostorih. Pridite v čim večjem številu. Imele bomo zabavo, nekoliko okrepčila in prepevale bomo lepe božične pesmi . Poleg tega si bomo izmenjale darila, zato naj vsaka prinese nekaj, kar ne bo vredno

manj kot en dolar. Čim več vas bo, temveč božičnega veselja bo med nami! Na seji bomo slišale tudi letno poročilo in z veseljem bomo sprejele vsak dober nasvet. Za leto 1963 bomo volile nov odbor. Priporočam vam, da si izberete drugo presednico, ker sem jaz že predolgo v odboru. Naj poskusijo še druge, morda bo več aktivnosti pri zvezi!
Ker se konec leta približuje zelo hitro, je naša dolžnost, da poravnamo naš dolg pri podružnici.
To leto smo bile še kar srečne, da ni bilo več smrtnih slučajev. Izgubile smo samo eno članico, dobro sestro Berkopec. Naj ji bo lahka ameriška gruda! Družini naše iskreno sožalje! Tudi tri naše članice so izgubile svoje može in sicer sestre Selas, Mavrlnec in Tomšič, ki je naša zapisnikarica. Umrlim želimo miren počitek, da bi jim bil Bog dober plačnik! Ostalim družinam pa v imenu podružnice naše sožalje.
Zahvalim se vsem uradnicam za složno sodelovanje pri naši podružnici
in priznanje vsem dobrini članicam, ki redno prihajajo na naše seje.

Št. 31. Gilbert, Minn. Pomlad in poletje sta bila deževna in mrzla, jesen pa imamo sedaj prav lepo in zelo si želimo, da bi lepo vreme ostalo, da bi bila krajša zima.
Udeležba na Zvezinem dnevu na Gil-bertu je bila lepa. Navzoča je bila tudi glavna predsednica Antonia Tanko in vse smo bile snidenja z njo zelo vesele. Prijetno se počutimo, ko vemo, da imamo tako delavno in požrtvovalno predsednico. Kakor veste je sedanja kampanja njej na čast. Pridobimo kaj novih članic in jo tako počastimo, da bo še z večjim veseljem delala in vodila našo organizacijo tudi v bodočnosti. Bog vas živi Mrs. Tanko! Iskrena hvala vsem, ki ste nam pomagali pri Zvezinem dnevu! Posebno zahvalo smo dolžne Mrs. William L. Brank —- toastmistress. Zahvalimo se tudi vsem, ki ste dali oglase in kandidatom, ki jih nismo pozabile 6. nov.
Članice prosim, da se udeleže glavne seje v obilnem številu. Želela bi, da pride na seje, ki so vsako drugo sredo v mesecu, več mladih. Za napredek podružnice rabimo več mladih moči. Le tako bo naša podružnica polno zaživela.	Antoinette	Lucich, taj.
Št. 41. Cleveland, Ohio. Vse članice ste vabljene, da se udeležite prihodnje seje, ki bo letna, in se bo vršila v torek 4. dec. v običajnih prostorih. Pripeljite s seboj kaj novih članic, kar bo' lepo darilo Zvezi za njen rojstni dan v decembru in tudi v veselje naši gl. predsednici kot voditeljici sedanje kampanje. Na glavni seji imamo lepo priliko napraviti načrte za novo leto, ki naj bi bili najboljši, kolikor je pač mogoče, za članstvo in organizacijo.
Prisrčna hvala članicam, ki ste skrbele za napredek podružnice in Zveze! Upam, da bo drugo leto še bolj uspešno. Po seji bomo imele običajno božično zabavo.
V	počastitev rojstnih obletnic sta nas po zadnji seji imenitno pogostili sestri Mary Markel in Mary Cerjak. Obema prisrčna hvala in še mnogo zdravih let!
Vesele smo bile izdatnega denarnega nakazila dividend od prodanih srečnih listkov skupnih podružnic, kar je lep napredek za našo blagajno.
Vsem bolnim sestram želimo najboljšega zdravja.
K božičnim praznikom pošiljam vsem skupaj najsrčnejše voščilo, da bi novorojeno Dete napolnilo vaša srca z največjo srečo in veseljem!

Št. 47. Garfield Hts., 25, Ohio. Bližajo se božični prazniki, ki jili vsakdo z veseljem pričakuje. Posebno otroci so radovedni, kaj jih čaka pod božičnim drevescem. Zdi se mi, da hitro mine leto, kot da bi se svet hitreje vrtil.
December je mesec, ko ima večina društev letne seje. Pri naši podružnici smo bile primorane spremeniti čas naših sej. Zato smo poslale članicam posebna vabila. Seveda se bo seja vršila poprej, kot pa bodo te vrstice objavljene. Zdelo se nam je najprimernejše, da se seja vrši 25. novembra. Vse, kar bo novega, bomo še pravočasno objavile. Vesela sem, da lahko rečem, da so nekatere naše članice bile aktivne celo leto, za kar se jim najlepše zahvalim. Seje so bile dobro obiskane in imele smo tudi zabave, za katere so članice darovale: pecivo kavo, ali pa prispevale v denarju. Nekatere so bile zelo marljive pri prodajanju listkov in tako pomagale ročni blagajni. Zares veselje je delati s tako delavnimi članicami. Upam, da bo tudi v bodoče dovolj zanimanja za delo v organizaciji in bo tako naša podružnica napredovala.
Imamo več bolnih članic, ki se ne morejo udeleževati naših sej. Iz srca jim želimo, da bi jim ljubi Bog čimprej vrnil zdravje. Bolnik je kakor jetnik v ječi. Vedno mora biti v hiši, ne more iti na vrt, kjer rožice cvetijo in ptički žgolijo. Upam, da bo novorojeno Dete rosilo svoj božji božični blagoslov na vse te trpeče in jim bo novo leto prineslo želenega zdravja.
V	tem letu nam je s m r t iztrgala iz naše srede pet članic, ki so bile zelo priljubljene. Vendar jih je imel Bog še rajši in jih je vzel k sebi v nebeške višave, kjer ni več trpljenja in nadlog.
Zelo sem bila vesela, ko sem zvedela, da se sestri Jennie Čermelj zdravje vrača. Meseca septembra je tako nesrečno padla, da si je zlomila roko.
Pri sestri M. Turkovich se je oglasila štorklja in ji pustila sinčka, ki je šesti otrok v družini. Sedaj imajo že štiri hčerke in dva sina. Naše čestitke Mr. & Mrs. Turkovich!
Vsem našim članicam, gl. odbornicam, in vsem članicam S Ž Z želim kar najlepše božične praznike in zdravo, srečno novo leto 1903!

rade čitamo Zarjo, ki je zelo priljubljena, da izvemo, kako žive naše članice pri bližnjih in daljnjih podružnicah. Ko sem prišla na zadnjo sejo, so me članice pobarale, kje je pač naša poročevalka? Ko sem jim razložila svoje osebno zadeve, so mi oprostile. Ker ima Zarja manjši obseg, bo tudi moj dopis krajši.
ZVEZDICA VPRAŠA . . .
Zvezdica svetla zvezdico vpraša: „Kaj v Betlehemu se sveti, kam zvezda repatica plove, kam truma angelcev hiti?”
Odvrne zvezda mali zvezdi: „Objela sreča je ljudi, obljuba božja se spolnila, zato nebo nocoj žari.”
In trume angelcev nebeškili hite radostno na zemljo.
Bogu hozano na višavah, ljubezen, mir, ljudem pojo.
Upam, da bomo sedaj, ko je zima tukaj, redno prihajale vsak mesec na sejo. Zadnja seja je potekla v najlepšem redu in udeležba je bila povoljna. Dogovorile smo se, da bomo imele božičnico v restavraciji, v kateri nam dobro postrežejo. Želimo, da bi se torej vse udeležile te skupne večerje v “Hallruegel Inn”. Ta zadnja seja je glavna v tem letu. Na njej se bomo pomenile o vsem, kar mislimo storiti za članstvo pri naši podružnici, v njegovo korist in razvedrilo. Iskreno vabljene torej na prihodnjo sejo in sestrski pozdrav vsem, ki čitate Zarjo!

Št. 77. Pittsburgh, Pa. Vse članice podr. 77. S. Ž. Z. vabim na letno sejo, ki se bo letos vršila 13. dec. točno ob 8. uri zvečer v običajnih prostorih. Lepo prosim, da se seje udeležite vse članice, ker bo važna, saj se moramo skupno pogovoriti, kaj in kako bomo delale v prihodnjem letu. Rešiti moramo več važnih stvari v dobrobit nas vseh. Posebno vabim tiste članice, ki nimajo navado hoditi na seje; enkrat na leto pač lahko pride vsaka, čeprav je iz bolj oddaljenega kraja. Isti večer bomo praznovale tudi božičnico in si izmenjale darila, ki naj ne bodo v vrednosti manj kot en dolar. Bližajo se nam veseli in najlepši prazniki v letu, za katere se vedno najbolj pripravljamo in ki se jih veseli staro in mlado. Posebno malčki komaj čakajo Miklavža. Vsem želim srečne božične praznike in zdravo novo leto.
Leto za letom hitro izginja in včasih se mi zdi, da so leta vedno krajša. Posebno letos se mi je to zdelo, ker smo imeli tako kratko poletje. Sedaj pa imamo še kar lepo vreme, čeprav se je sneg že nekajkrat ponujal, vendar ne more še obstati.
Vsem bolnim članicam želim ljubega zdravja. Njim in vsem želim, da vas pozdravi na pragu novega leta sreča, vas spremlja vse leto 1963 ter še naprej, vsaj do konca tega stoletja; potem pa se bomo Sreči priporočili še za podaljšanje. And keep smiling!

Št. 84, New York City, N. Y. Lepo prosim vse članice, da mi oproste, ker se že od meseca aprila nisem oglasila. Zadel me je hud udarec, ko je po dolgi bolezni umrl 2. aprila moj ljubi mož Frank. Že prej nisem bila trdnega zdravja, sedaj se mi je pa še poslabšalo, zato se zdravim že od 30. sept. v Kneipp Springs, kjer je zelo lepo. Poleg sester nam strežejo tudi civilne bolničarke, zdravnik pa predpiše kopeli, “tritmente” in čaje iz raz nih rož. To zdravilišče v New Yorku ni dosti poznano. V njem je okoli 120 ljudi, med njimi kakih 10 duhovnikov in sodnik Runy iz Chicago. Slednji je zelo prijazen človek; vsako jutro streže pri sv. maši in zvečer pri večernicah.
Oktobra nisem mogla biti na seji, verjetno bom pa že na prihodnji. Pri naši podružnici ni pravega zanimanja. Tiste članice, ki bi lahko bolj sodelovale, se morda ne potrudijo dovolj, veliko članic je pa bolnih in ne morejo sodelovati. Mrs. Adamič je bila 9 tednov v bolnici, kjer je prestala hudo operacijo, sedaj pa se zdravi pri sinu. Tudi Mrs. Fany Holešek in Dora se zdravita doma. Dora je tudi bila v bolnici na operaciji. Bolna je tudi Mrs.. Martinčič — ne more nič hoditi. Mrs. Alex, ki se je preselila od nas, ima moža bolnega že več kot 5 let, sedaj je pa še sama zbolela. Njeni hčerki Paulick in Golja sta poročeni v Wocester, N. Y. in imata tam velike in moderne farme. Tam blizu ima farmo tudi Mrs. Rode in precej drugih Slovencev. Vsem bolnim članicam želim ljubega zdravja.
V	juniju se je poročila hčerka naše blagajničarke Evelin. Bila je zelo lepa nevesta. Od naše zapisnikarice sta se pa poročila kar dve hčerki ena junija, dinga pa septembra. Tudi ti dve sta imeli zelo lepo poroko. Vsem trem nevestein želim mnogo sreče v zakonskem stanu.
Mrs. Zalokar je v aprilu zgubila sina Johna, ki je bil komaj 45 let star. Poleg matere zapušča ženo in tri sinove. Naše iskreno sožalje!
18. sept. smo imele bus ride v Greenwood Lake. Imele smo krasen dan, z veselo družbo in dobro postrežbo smo bili vsi zadovoljni. Upam, da se bomo prihodnje leto zopet kam peljale na božjo pot.
Mrs. Ana Cerar in mož sta kupila hišo precej daleč proč od nas in ju zelo pogrešamo. Prav tako pogrešamo pri sejah Mrs. Gosar. Obe sta bili prej zelo vestni članici.
Prisrčna zahvala vsem članicam, ki so mi poslale ob smrti mojega moža za sv. maše in simpaty cards. Iskreno pozdravjam vse članice podr. št. 84 in vse ostale širom Amerike.

St. 93. Brooklyn, N. Y. Žena mojega sina Jerneja se je vrnila z obiska v starem kraju. Z njo je bil njen sin, ki je star 17 let. Pred štirimi leti je končal šolo, denar za potovanje si je zaslužil sam. Oba z materjo zelo hvalita, kako jima je bilo v Sloveniji všeč. Vnuk pravi, da bo še šel v stari kraj, čeprav bi si moral denar za pot pristradati. Ljudje so tam silno prijazni. Ko so šli tam v nedeljo k sv. maši, je šel gospoda vprašat, da bi šel rad k sv. obhajilu. Ljudje so kar strmeli, da je mladina v Ameriki tako pobožna. To je bilo v Starem trgu v Beli krajini, ki ji pravijo majhna Amerika. Vendar se tam A-merikanci ne bi mogli več privaditi.
V	naši naselbini smo še kar zdravi. Pred kratkim sem vprašala neko znanko, kako da je kaj. Pa mi je odgovorila, da je vse dobro, dokler hodimo.
Ker se bližajo prazniki, želim vsem glavnim odbornicam, ki tako lepo skrbe za našo organizacijo, naši izvrstni urednici, vsem članicam SŽZ, posebno pri št. 93., še prav posebno pa našemu duhovnemu vodju, ki nam piše tako lepe članke v Zarjo, prav lepe božične praznike in srečno novo leto.

Št. 105. Detroit, Mich. Novembra je bila seja pri Mrs. Mary Zimmerman, na kateri smo se prav dobro imele. Mary nas je postregla z zelo dobrim prigrizkom. Nazadnje pa nas je še presenetila z "lemon strudel”, ki je bil silno dober, saj se je kar v ustih topil. Prav lepa hvala, Mary! Udeležba na seji je bila dobra. Hostes dar je dobila Kathryn Musick.
Mrs. Alice Kocjan je imela obisk iz Warren, Ohio — prišla je njena mati. Na seji smo jo zelo pogrešale. Mrs. Ann McGee nas je povabila za X-mas party. Ker se Imamo vsako leto prav lepo, se ga udeležite v velikem številu. Prinesite s seboj darilo v vrednosti $1.
Srečen rojstni dan želim Mrs. Pe-trich, Mrs. Lindich in Mrs. Nezbede. Vsem članicam pa voščim prav vesele božične praznike in srečno novo leto, da bi ga preživele v zdravju In zadovoljstvu!

A Frosty Toothpick Tree
Here’s a Christmas decoration that will brighten table	and	mantel or
dress up any corner of the house during the holidays!
Easy as mince pie to make, your toothpick Christmas tree gives every member of the family a chance to use his or her imagination and contribute something to the happy holiday scene at your house.
Follow these simple instructions and watch your frosty tree grow. Supplies you’ll need include:
1. Diamond round toothpicks — approximately 8 boxes.
2. One can of snow spray.
3. Sixteen one-inch styrofoam balls.
4. Miniature tree ornaments in many colors.
And while you’re getting materials together, don’t	forget	to	round	up
the kids — let them take part in the fun of making the tree and the satisfaction of seeing it finished. They can begin by sticking toothpicks — as many as will fit — into each styrofoam ball.
Then form the base of the tree by arranging seven “pin-cushion” balls in a circle. Pop a circle of five toothpick balls on the base, then a circle of three, and finally, one.
White snow spray gives the tree a frosty, wintry feeling. Unusual color effects are possible with different shades of spray — red, green, blue.
Glittering colored ornaments placed among the "boughs” add the final touch to the family masterpiece.
Bring a winter wonderland atmosphere to different areas of the house with toothpick Christmas trees. You can vary the size and shape of the trees by using more, or larger styrofoam balls . . . different spray colors. And prepare for a barrage of how-ever-did-you-make them questions from admiring guests. Your frosty toothpick Christmas tree is certain to highlight the holidays at home!

No one is sure who wrote "Adeste Fideles” . . . credit is usually given St. Bonaventure; this hymn was & great favorite of Teddy Roosevelt. Issac Watts composed “Joy to the World” in 1719; the music we know for the hymn was adapted by Lowell Mason from Handel’s "Messiah.”
“Away in a Manger” is said to have been inspired by Martin Luther’s “From Heaven Above I Come to You.” Charles Wesley wrote “Hark the Herald Angels sing” in 1737 . . . several authors presumed to alter it . . . and a section of Mendelssohn’s "Festge-sang” was adapted in 1855 for the musical version familiar to us.
In 18G8, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was composed by Bishop Phillips Brooks, when his Philadelphia Sunday school class asked for a Christmas song. His organist, Lewis
H.	Redner, furnished the tune . . . and insisted the music came to him miraculously, in a Christmas Eve dream!
Late last century, church musicians and laymen tracked down carols sung throughout the world . . . and printed them for the enjoyment of future generations.
The invention of the phonograph in 1877 brought the music of Christmas into homes on recordings. But the sweetness of caroler’s voices and the fresh jubilation of the master’s music was lost . . . until recent years.
Pioneering in stereo kit equipment by the Heath Company of Benton Harbor, Michigan . . . and the two-year young stereo disc, have given new life to Christmas music. Today we can listen to hymns and carols of years long past—reproduced in their ancient glory and truest tones.
HOW TO CHOOSE TOYS FOR CHILDREN
Don’t toy with Junior's Christmas fun. Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best when selecting toys for the children on your shopping list, know what to look for before you visit those dazzling Toylands. You’re less likely to be bothered and bewildered by the bewitching displays, more apt to enchant the kids with your gifts, if you keep certain facts in mind.
First, and most important, shopping for kids is just like shopping for a-dults in one major respect; if you bear in mind their talents, hobbies, projects and interests, likes and dislikes, your choice will be about right. Avoid buying the toy you cherished at age six
—or the one you wanted but didn’t get —unless you’re pretty sure that the six-year-old on your list has the same longings. If you’re buying toys for someone else’s kids, ask that person’s advice, if possible.
No matter what the child's age suggest experts try to achieve a balance in the gifts you give. Give some toys or games that can be played outdoors, others that can while away a rainy afternoon indoors; toys he can play with alone, plus games that require playmates, and, — for the older child— word games or games about the worlds of business and politics that allow the whole family to participate. Give some toys that the child can really work with—blocks, paints, clay, or, for the older child,
equipment for his hobbies and special interests. Here again, if you’re buying gifts for the children of friends, you might check to find out what the parents are buying.
Should you give brothers and sisters one toy to be shared? Not unless you like the sounds of battle! Children get deeply and jealously attached to such items as dolls, stuffed animals, favorite books. On the other hand, home sports equipment (archery or ping pong sets, for example- or games for three or four players can be given jointly to all the kids in a family. But if it’s the parents who are giving the joint present, they should also give each child an individual gift, no matter how small and inexpensive.

AROUND THE WORLD WITH SANTA CLAUS
Santa Claus is a wanted man.
But he won’t be easy to track clown, for he has too many aliases.
In one part of the world he pops up under the name of Julenissen; in another, the Abbot of Unreason; in a third, as Saint Nicholas, or Father Christmas.
Santa’s rewards, as well as his name, vary from place to place. In one country, a bad boy is liable to find coals in his stockings. Elsewhere, a good child may discover a “Yogi Bear"!
Santa’s timetable and the gifts he brings vary with the particular country where he has staked out operations.
In Spain, he bears gifts on January 6, Epiphany, in celebration of the Three Wise Men. Kids put their shoes in the windows and fill them with straw for the Neighbors horse—in the hope that while the horses may neigh, Santa won’t say “nay.”
In Germany, he weal’s a big chain which he rattles at the door, and enters bringing candy and cookies for the good youngsters, an empty potato sack for the bad ones.
In the United States, Santa fills the good kid’s stockings with everything from electric trains and model space rockets to toys testing their skills and expanding their knowledge.
In Italy, Santa comes as an old woman on a broomstick, named La Be-fona, and leaves gifts in the shoes of nice children. But woe to those who don’t mind their parents—they’re apt to find ashes in their brogans!

How are you? I hope you had a nice summer.
I have news to write you! On October 6th, I received a sister-in-law. My big brother Jimmy married a very nice girl, Miss Mary Peseley. The wedding was held in Sacramento, California. My mother attended the wedding. She traveled by plane. It was »11 very exciting for all of us.
Now I am back in school attending 4th grade. My best subject is art. Also I have started with piano lessons. I like music very much.
I have a pet cat named Sheppard. He is a part Persian and part Angora. Do you have any pets?
Today, I was notified I received second prize, which was a cash a-ward in the Kohler Hallowe’en parade. I was a corn-shock and held a pumpkin. I thought you would like know about it, Donna.

Here are a few ideas for Christmas-tree ornaments that are made out of materials that may be found around most homes: bits of metallic gift-wrapping paper from last year’s presents and aluminum foil, or scraps of tin foil. Cut the foil or paper into thin strips and curl them by running one edge of a pair of scissors or a dull knife over the strips; or roll the metallic paper around a pencil and then slip it off the pencil. Put the strips of tin foil together with red or green cellophane tape. Place a few squares of colored tape on the shiny side of the foil. Make a loop for hanging by placing the sticky sides of two pieces of cellophane tape together. One piece of tape should be longer than the other, so that there will be a sticky end to attach to the ornament. Another way to use the tin foil is to tape the curled strips to a soda straw with bright-red cellophane tape.
A few cubes of sugar strung between two strips of red cellophane tape will look very pretty against the dark green of your Christmas tree. Make sure the tapes stick together between cubes.
