V sredo so p r e d s t avniki sprejeli to dopolnilo. -----o------ Civilna vlada v Gani ACCRA, Gana. Slovenska izseljenska matica (Op. ur. — Ta članek je bil objavljen v Svob. Slov. in ga posredujemo našim bralcem. Trenutno bo o SIM dovolj.) Drugi tekmeci sedanjega župana Kucinicha so okrajni komišener Edward Feighan, državni senator Charles Butts in clevelandski mestni odbornik Basil Russo. Oba i mata močno podporo. Predsednik Carter v skrbeh zaradi čislke v vlad! WASHINGTON, D.C. — V pogovoru z uslužbencem Bele hiše je predsednik Carter priznal dve morebitni napaki v zvezi s svojim obnašanjem o čistki v vladi in o energetskem programu. Glede čistke Carter ni pričakoval take ostre reakcije od občinstva in Kongresa. . On je Karlu oskrbel NEW YORK, N.Y. Skrbeli smo, kaj bo in čakali... Ko sem pred 30 leti prišel v Ameriko, smo imeli kar Štiri dnevnike: Ameriško Domovino in Enakopravnost v Clevelandu, Prosveto v Chicagu in Glas naroda v New Yorku. Kaj zdaj? Novi urednik g. Kako naj mu pomagamo? On položi svojo roko na mojo ramo in me z mirnim duhovniškim, prijateljskim pogledom nagdvori: “Imate toliko domobranskih invalidov in revežev, za nje skrbite, njim dajte vse ...” Njegova duhovniška roka, le- nebom. V barviti nedeljski paradi, katera se bo začela ob pol dveh popoldne bo korakal ohijski senator Howard Met-zenbaum od veleceste do Lake Shora. Po paradi bo igrala avstrijska godba na pihala, diatonični harmonikarji in Slogarjev orkester. V nedeljo zvečer bo oddanih nad trideset dobitkov. Jews and Moslems believe the Messiah will return thru this gate. We proceeded to Bani Gha-nim (Eye of the Needle) and res* • for several minutes. From here we walked to Herod’s gate and to the site of Pilate’s Palace and the Antonia Fortress and the convent of the Sisters of Zion. We continued on and visited the Church of the Flagel- , lation on the site of which Jesus was scourged after he was sentenced (1st Station of the Cross). Jesus started carrying the Cross from the site of the Chapel of Condemnation. We took the same path. This was 2nd Station of the Cross. Then we boarded the bus and passed the place where Judas hanged himself. Another highlight was the Pool of Siloam, in whose water Jesus told the blind man to wash his eyes. After doing so, he could see again. We all went to the Pool and washed our hands and face. We continued on he highway and viewed apartments under construction with the help of American Jefvish money. We traveled along the Nobe road where we noticed a change of vegetation to productive fertile farmland. It was on this road that Jesus met the two travelers on their way to Emmaus on Easter Sunday and revealed himself to them, as the risen Lord. Emmaus Sanctuary, rebuilt on the ruins of the ancient one in 1900, has three naves: that on the left is interrupted by a rectangular construction, which tradition points out as the remains of the house of Cleophas, who entertained the Redeemer on the day of his Resurrection. The ancient land, rums and Basilica were acquired by Marquise Pauline de Nicolay in 1861 and were donated to the Franciscans. A Mass was celebrated here by , Msgr. Baznik, in this Church of St. Cleophas, from which we had another panoramic view of the countryside. Then we returned to our hotel after another busy day. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jenc, 20851 Wilmore Ave., Euclid, O., observed their 68th Wedding Anniver-(Continued on page 6) By JOYCE TURK (Continuation) As a.Peace Corps Volunteer I received $129.00 per month as a living allowance. Housing was not provided. Therefore, this amount was allotted for rent, utilities, food, transportation, clothing, miscellaneous and entertainment. It was difficult to save any money. Two other benefits received by volunteers were ?, monthly sum of $125 per month of service which was accrued in the U.S. to be released when the volunteer arrived home (so-called Readjustment Allowance), and complete medical care in-country. We were supplied with medical kits that included drugs for headaches, diarrhea, cramps, allergies, and respiratory ailments. A Filipino doctor was on-call and. we had access to a Filipino hospital in Manila. The drawback, in some cases, was that we were forced to use Filipino medical care. In general it was very good. Sometimes, though, serious problems could only be resolved by doctors who understood the Caucasian in the tropical climate. My medical problems were not serious. I experienced sore throats regularly during the first year, fevers and allerg; frequently. Aside from these minor ailments, I remained quite healthy in spite of the conditions to which I was exposed. My favorite area of the Philippines was 30-60 feet under water. Scuba diving, was a thrilling pastime for me. I spotted sharks only mice while . diving although they may have watched me many times without my being a-ware. The beauty of the sea life, coral beds, and colorful fish, plants, and underwater terrain was phenomenal to me. I had only witnessed such life in an aquarium. On land my favorite place was among the hill tribes of Luzon, the Igorots, Ifugaos, and Kalingas. These tribes people are accessible to the outsider, and I often observed them in the mountain towns I visited. Until recently the Kalinga tribe were headhunters and I suspect that in the remote hinterland regions this is still a common practice among the tribes. The Ifugao women wear a head piece made of snake vertebrae. They believe that they will be protected from being struck by lightning in the fields, or, if she is pregnant, she will bear a child without much difficulty. They are tat-- tooed on their arrns from the wrist to the shoulder, on their necks, and sometimes on their foreheads and cheeks. The practice of tattooing is not done these days as it is very painful and expensive. During the adolescence of the last generation, tattooing provided that a woman would have no trouble marrying, for a highly tattooed woman was considered very beautiful. The women wear a skirt called a “tapis” which is hand woven in traditional colors and patterns. (To be continued) Favorite Recipes OLD WORLD FESTIVAL PLANNED ON E. 185 ST.
