Saluted were Frank Somrack, Frank Vodopivec, Adolph Macerol, Louis Bajc, John Novak and Ilija Dalic. Frank Somrack worked at CTD the longest. His mother '''as born near Ljubljana and a*5 father, who came from Novo Mesto in 1906, was employed in our shop as a blacksmith when they were st'H paying in gold. ^ Frank Somrack started in 1942, served a machinist’s apprenticeship, and put in a total of 47 years of which 23 years '''ere served as our union presi-oont. Almost all of us agree, “Vodopivec was the hardest worker at CTD even if he never did piece work.” And then Louis Bajc. His story also makes you ponder. After the war in Europe, he returned to Slovenia from Italy. Instead of being welcomed, he was arrested. They told him he was on the wrong side. His life was in danger. In the end, they sent him to hard labor in prison where he endured great suffering. When finally released, he fled the country. Strapped under the Orient Express train, he arrived in Paris which was the end of the line. He applied for political asylum and was granted an immigration visit to the USA. Everybody in the Slovenian community knows Lojze. He supports every event and occasionally writes poetry for the Ameriška Domovina. Unknown to most people, he does good deeds for the elderly who are lonely. Ilija Dalic is a Bosnian Croatian. He’s a Slovenian at heart. Married to a Štajerka, he frequents many Slovenian events. One day I ran into him on a beach in Florida. He told me he spent every December the last 12 years on the same beach. Unfortunately, his health was failing and he retired on a medical disability. We pray for his health to return. In the end, for myself, it seems that praise is flowing everywhere and each of us has had sufferng. And I cannot find any fault with my friends in my 32 years at CTD. At one time the party at Marie’s grew louder. The excellent food and some drinking put people in a jovial mood. As 1 mingled, I found it amazing. There were people here who never go to parties. They came to show great respect for the retirees. We reminisced about the old days. Cleveland Twist Drill was an excellent place to work. There is great pay, especially for those on piece work. But not for everyone. CTD gave a lot, and also took a lot. Many times workers or management would discriminate and take advantage. Many jokes were exchanged. One said, “I was never patted on the back for anything.” An old timer replied, “You are right, Tony, you were never patted on the back, but you were stabbed in the back many times.” Everybody laughed. All in all, the blessings were far greater than disappointments. We remembered the good times, too. The Christmas parties at the Cleveland Auditorium, the bonuses, the making of acquaintances with great people of different cultures and backgrounds. mm m tft " Newly retired from Cleveland Twist Drill are, Lojze Bajc, Frank Somrack, Ilija Dalic and Adoph Macerol. We Slovenians are considered AMLA. to be okay. Like other nationalities, there are jokes about us. Our national anthem is supposed to be, “To the bank, to the bank, to the bank, bank, bank.” Or our patron saint is “St. Clair Savings.” But in general, people like us and every year we have union meetings in the Slovenian National Home and we hold our picnics at SNPJ or We all wish our retirees a happy new beginning and adjustment. Frank Somrack and Louis Bajc are already planning. This summer Louis will visit his hometown for the first time. Frank goes, for the first time ever, to see his parents’ birthplace in Slovenia and to visit his many cousins there. Wishing you many happy discoveries. Bon Voyage. At the conclusion of his talk, Stan announced Ameritrust Bank was presenting a $50.00 bond as a door prize. The lucky winner was Mary Zupan. In addition, a treat of “flancate,” courtesy of Ameritrust, was awaiting the members after the meeting. We thank Mr. Stan Kuhar for his presentation. It was food for thought, especially for those of us in our senior years. Because July is a rather hectic month, with vacations, St. Vitus Festival, etc., no tour is planned for July. But... we are making preparatons for the Annual Picnic and Dinner sponsored by the Federation of Slovenian Pensioners. The date is Wednesday, Aug. 16. and will be held at the SNPJ Grounds. As in the past three years we again plan to charter a bus for the residents of the St. Clair area. Note: This is not limited to members only. ALL ARE WELCOME. Anyone wishing to go by bus, call me at 391-9761 as soon as possible. The charge will be minimal. Also, as in the past, DELICIOUS DINNERS, prepared by Julia Zalar and her staff, will be available, BUT tickets for that must be purchased in advance. I will have tickets at our July meeting or you can call 391-9761. Dinner tickets are only $7.00 which also includes your admission to the grounds. Try not to miss this event. Enjoy the day. What a wonderful way to meet with friends from Barberton, Maple Hts., Euclid, Collin-wood, St. Clair and other places, far and near. Chuck Krivec will supply the music for dancing. It was at our meeting in June that we learned that member Agnes Oster was hospitalized and scheduled for surgery. Then upon returning home from our June 20th tour, we heard the sad news of her death on that same day. How quickly death can strike. All who knew Aggie were shocked and saddened by the loss of this endearing lady. Our deepest sympathy to her devoted husband, John, and family members. Reported sick were Frances Novak and Frances Launch. Both spent some time in the hospital, and are now back at home. We hope their recovery is complete and hope to see them at our July meeting. We miss seeing the pleasant and cheery Betty Kukec in our area. She is now a resident of the Gateway Family House. I know that a visit, a call, or a card will be greatly appreciated by her. Betty was always very much involved in our activities, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her at our meetings. Chris Glavan is at home recovering from surgery and is still receiving therapy. We do expect to see her about soon. How about it, Chris? A report of our June 20th bus tour will be coming in another issue. As is customary, I want to remind you of our coming meeting date. It will be held in the usual place, the Annex of the SNH on St. Clair. The date is Thursday, July 20 at 1:30 p.m. See you there. Stanley J. A A trip to the USSR is interesting adventure by John Prince Last month 1 had the opportunity to be part of a group of American attorneys (mostly from California) going to the USSR to meet Soviet attorneys. I wondered whether the atmosphere would be the same as that in the other communist countries 1 had visited on previous trips, namely Poland, Hungary and East Germany. A few things we saw early on suggested we were going to see a strictly controlled society. The passport control guards were uniformly very young and very stern-faced. They examined our visas as if we were a group of spies and we were kept under their scrutiny for several unnecesary minutes even though it was 2 a.m. at Moscow airport. 1 had the satisfaction, however, of getting a smile out of one guard as I continued to smile cheerfully and made a s'Bn-language joke about my disheveled appearance in the middle of the night after 10 hours on planes. It was the first hint that even Soviet officialdom has a human side. Next morning we met Alla, a short forty-some-year-old Poglish speaking Moscow lady who was to be our guide everywhere in the USSR. Alla sickly let us know in various ways that she was in charge and, not completely treasonably, that she didn’t tolerate others talking when she was talking. One of the things she pointed °ut as our bleary eyed group ^as tyven its first bus tour was 'arge “statue of Dzerzhin- sky” in a Moscow park. It was a shock to think that a commemoration of the founder of the Cheka, the predecessor of the K.G.B., would still be prominently displayed and I asked Alla only a veiled question to confirm that it was indeed theS Felix Dzerzhinsky. Alla apparently guessed that I knew who he was and showed displeasure with my purposely innocuous question, as she did occasionally with some of the questions from others. With that type of start one might expect the worst. But the contrary proved to be the case. In Leningrad we met with a group of five Leningrad attorneys. I talked at length with one of them. We developed rapport rapidly and when it was time to leave he asked whether I would like to visit his home and talk with his family. The evening with his family became the high point of the trip for one who had come to try to discover a bit of the soul of the people in an all too brief visit. Their apartment was quite small by our standards, but the warmth and kindness of the family made size unimportant. They talked freely and sincerely of their admiration for President Gorbachev and for his glasnost. But they clearly contrasted that with the many years of repression that had gone before, at one point saying that the USSR had been a “prison camp” previously. They praised the goals in perestroika, but without blinking, pointed out what a huge job of reform of the economy was required for consumer goods to become reasonably available. When I added my admiration for Mr. Gorbachev — and it wasn’t long ago that I thought I’d never feel that way about any Soviet leader — and suggested that at least they were better off relative to consumer goods than they were ten years ago, they informed me that, as lacking in free speech as conditions were then, there were noticably more consumer goods available ten years before. Our discussion went on into the early morning and picked up again the next day at a restaurant. Never did I notice my friends looking over their shoulders as they mixed critical comments with positive comments. And reading their eyes and seeing their children, I saw sincere talk indicating, “we definitely want autonomy, and maybe or maybe not sovereignty, too.” The conversation was a bit more guarded there than in the Russian republic, but even then it had a comparative freeness that was unthinkable until recently. There was even an occasional reference to the provisions of the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop pact whose provisions had been totally denied for almost 50 years. The English language version of the Moscow News one Sunday summarized evidence that Stalin’s USSR was responsible for the 1940 massacre of thousands of Polish officers (also long denied) and had other amazing articles such as one about a man convicted by the K.G.B. “for the courage of his convictions.” Perhaps the Chinese leaders would do well to look at what President Gorbachev has done with glasnost. His policy seems to have averted the type of situation existing today in China. As our tour came to a close, another insightful conversation occurred. We sat in an unusually small group with Alla, our guide, who was obviously a rather orthodox communist. After much coaxing she decided to level with us and give us her feelings about Americans as a result of 22 years of guiding. Alla confided that she found Americans rather arrogant. They looked down on the Soviet Union and did not respect its achievements. Many came with little real interest and only wished to confirm how backward the country was according to their thinking. And she charged that Soviets know much more about America than Americans know or care to know about the USSR. Americans don’t even know the difference between Russia and the USSR, she added, quite correctly, incidentally. One of the three Americans present agreed with her completely, adding that when he decided to visit the USSR his friends all wanted to know why he would want to go there. 1 felt that that was not very fair to Americans so I pointed out that my friends envied my trip and, among other things, I told Alla that I knew much more about Soviet composers (I am ecstatic over Rachmaninoff’s music in particular, in sharp contrast to the Plain Dealer’s music critic) than she knew about American composers. In a nasty bit of glasnost Alla shot back, “What is there to know?” (I had to rely heavily on the fact that the greatest living composer is an American, Aaron Copeland, because she was correct in a comparative sense.) But as one thinks more about it, Alla wasn’t all wrong. We do need to learn more about the USSR and some of our attitudes may not be appropriate under current circumstances. We met many Soviets with a warm attitude toward Americans. One of our group, Los Angeles attorney Larry Schnabel, met a Russian Michael J. Fox look-alike at GUM department store. The lad was a friendly, English-speaking engineering student at Moscow University. After they sat down to talk, “Michael” pointed to a small button that, in a show of friendship for America, he had pinned on his shirt. It readj “Cleveland, On The North Coast.” Mr. Prince is an attorney and a former Cleveland Councilman. One Cleveland Southeastern Trails bus left St. Mary’s on Holmes Ave. promptly at 6:30 in the morning and arrived at St. Mary’s Slovenian Franciscan Monastery in Lemont by 2:30 p.m. There followed an evening procession, a very awesome and inspiring sight with pilgrims carrying lighted candles and saying the rosary. The pathway to the grotto marked by red flares in the quiet evening was breathtaking. There was not an evil thought in the congregation; we were so close to God. Early Sunday morning the day began with the holy sacrifice of the Mass. At ten, the pilgrims wended their way to the cemetery where the Franciscans are buried and a special service was held at the grave of our beloved Bishop Gregory Rozman. Father For-tunat, O.F.M., reminded us of the victims of the war and revolution in Slovenian. Mr. Joseph Likozar delivered the eulogy. This was followed by Mass at the grotto. We were very pleasantly surprised to learn that the Rev. Karel Ceglar, S.D.B., of St. Gregory’s Church in Hamilton, Ontario, was celebrating with us his golden anniversary Mass and 60 years in the Salesian Society of St. John Bosco. Our congratulations to Father Ceglar. The happy occasion was repeated in Hamilton on July 9th. In the afternoon, the litany of Our Lady was sung in the chapel. This brought to a close the pilgrimage. As we boarded the bus bound for Cleveland, everyone bade farewell to a very touching and satisfying visit to the holy grounds of St. Mary’s Monastery. A second bus that had arrived loaded with pilgrims from the Slovenska Pristava, also departed but those people headed for Milwaukee to renew their acquaintances from the times of the Slovenian holocaust. “I am surprised at all the activity that has been packed into this brief sojourn,” said Stanley Vidmar, a veteran of pilgrimages. It was very gratifying to see some of the younger Slovenian Americans on this trip. Letošnji gostitelj je francoski predsednik Francois Mitterand. Hkrati praznujejo danes 200-letnico pričetka francoske revolucije. Zaradi tega so zbrani v Parizu poleg voditeljev najmočnejših zahodnih industrijskih držav tudi številni predsedniki vlad držav tkim. Tretjega sveta. Ali more sploh krepost kreposti nasprotovati? Dobrota ne more nasprotovati dobroti. Dobrote in kreposti sploh človek nima nikoli dovolj. Nobeno »prepričanje« jima ne more nasprotovati. Vsak pravi komunistični nazor in prepričanje ju morata obenem pospeševati. Presadili so ga zelo neustrezno, toda učinkovito. (dalje prihodnji torek) Marije Vnebovzete v Clevelandu. Postregli so nam še kar hitro in dobro. Franka Urankarja. P.I.
