There are many tnore talented persons who could write that type of story. Inc. building at 6117 St. Clair Avenue received a chemical cleaning on the front side ,as» Sunday. Soot from cars, buses and trucks left a black coating on the building which is on the main thoroughfare of St. Clair Avenue. The second picture shows the transformation of the cement blocks and bricks from black to a nice clean luster. The upper windows will also be replaced and the wood frames will be repainted as part of the Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program citywide where some of the cost for the project will be refunded by a government grant. The negotiations with the city architects have been going on for two years and we received the final approval for the go-ahead last Friday. The cleaning project has finally begun and we can all be proud of our Slovenian newspaper printing plant building along St. Clair Avenue, the traditional and historic location of most of our pioneer and refugee Slovenian settlers in America. The three-week tour originated in Cleveland. We traveled with the most friendly people from Pittsburgh: Mary Skerlong and Rosemary Mlay and many others; Fr. Flanik, Slovene and Yugoslavia expert; Jack and Jo Dwyer from Indiana, and others from New Zealand, Australia, Cyril Grilc from Florida, and a couple from Ireland. The goal of this trip was to locate my family, my roots -and to see this beautiful Slovenia I’ve heard and read so much about. And both goals were accomplished. We were so fortunate to locate my father’s side of the family just outside of Ribnica. I will never forget carrying two small dictionaries, translating from English to Slovenian and vice-versa. Wherever we went from the University of Ljubljana to Ribnica, Semič, and on and on - the people were so friendly and hospitable. Before you knew it, there were the goodies, šunka, potica, wine, etc. We flew from Ljubljana to Dubrovnik - and returned via motor coach along the Adriatic Coast with many stops too numerous to mention here. Then from Bled onto Zagreb, winding up in Ljubljana. We’re rather short of relatives here in Michigan, but there (Slovenia), relatives galore. My Aunt Angela Strnad of Velike Poljana offered land and a house, if we would return there. And there was Aunt Theresa Prijatel with her lovely family. Also, first cousins and their families; Anica Jamnik of Domžale, Olga Kovačič of Šentvid, Tony Strnad and France Prijatelj of Velike Poljana - are those we met and surprised. My husband takes every chance he gets to tell others about our trip - and expresses his greatest respect and admiration of the Slovenes. He spent weeks organizing, categorizing, writing descrip- tions of each snapshot, and finally getting them into six photo albums. He’s a great reader, and read so much history of Slovenia after our return, including “Tito” which Fr. Flanik sent him. Both of us very much appreciate the articles irrrhe AD, thus keeping us informed of the political conditions and activities in Slovenia and Yugoslavia. John A. Arnez’s recent writing from the book Slovenia in European Affairs, is excellent. Please know - as many other subscribers also write - the Ameriška Domovina keeps us all in touch with each other -together as a Slovenian community wherever we are scattered far and wide. And for this we thank you all; we are grateful. Do keep up the good work. Na svidenje, Dorothy (Sever) Kraft Mt. Clemens, Mich. P.S. — Regarding the article “Who is Your Sister?” printed in the AD on Sept. 22 and Oct. 10. What a wonderful opportunity those four sisters had to serve the Lord. It seems like just yesterday and now we are celebrating our 70th Anniversary. We have been very busy in the lastTive years, especially our sports department. Our Winter Bowling Leagues are getting bigger and better. Our Summer League consists of “men” only. They hold a steak dinner in the club room and watch the Browns games on TV. Everyone has a super time. Our baseball team has a great time showing everyone what they can do. The dart teams dart every Wednesday night. We have four teams. They have brought home four trophies in the last five years. We think our boys are the best. If you have time come down on Wednesday and watch some great dart shooting. The KSKJ Ladies League brought home a trophy for us last year, too. The Cav’s basketball season is an exciting time, too, at pur club. We have buses going to the Coliseum every so often. We also were on national TV at the Cav’s play-off game. Our volleyball team is doing great, too. They have also brought us trophies. They play at the YMCA in Euclid. Stop by if you have time. They obtained work at the railroad roundhouse and repair shops. Also, the Collinwood Brick and Shale Co. hired many of our Slovenians. In 1908, St. Mary’s Church was founded by Rev. Pakiz, and this event resulted in even more Slovenians making their home in the Collinwood area. Collinwood, like Nottingham, was once a village before annexation to the city of Cleveland. Since it, too, has an interesting past, a short history of Collinwood follows: On of the first settlers in Collinwood was Thomas Mcilrath who came with his family from Pennsylvania around 1810. The family existed the 1st year by hunting wild game for food. The pelts of the animals were used for clothing and bartering for staples. Initially, the village was called “Frogsville,” probably due to the large swamp that existed in the vicinity, and the preponderance of frogs that were a result of ideal breeding conditions. In 1852 the railroad ran tracks thru the north end of the town. Byl868, the Village was renamed “Collinsville” after Charles Collins an engineer of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern (Later New York Central and now Conrail). In 1873 a huge roundhouse and repair shops were being first erected and two years later completed. When Charles Collins died suddenly in 1875, the town name was changed to Collinwood. That same year a post office opened. By 1879, Collinwood had 3 public schools, 6 general stores, 4 doctors, 2 pharmacies, 1 hardware store, 2 shoe stores, 1 dry goods store, 2 millinery, 2 livery stables, 2 New R.R. depots, 1 wagon-blacksmith shop, / harness shop, 3 meat markets, Churches and the Warren House Hotel. The population was 1500 and that figure increased year after year. Collinwood suffered when disasterous fire occurred at the Lakeview school, killing 165 pupils and two teachers (now Memorial School) In 1907, Collinwood Junior High opened at 5 points. In 1926 the school was enlarged and it became a high school also. When its citizen’s voted to be annexed by city of Cleveland, on Jan 21, 1910, Collinwood was no longer an independent village. Tutela and the pro-busing slate of candidates want to do) that would cause forced busing to continue even without a court order. By giving parents only "some" choice so prescribed "racial balance” continues (as Supt. Tutela and the pro-busing slate of candidates want to do) that means there would STILL be forced busing. By continuing to try to "satisfy” ALL components of the "remedial" order before seeking release (as the pro-busers say) the school board has, in good faith, ALREADY "desegregated" the schools. Decades from now pro-busers will STILL say not enough has been done because (1) components of the order are vague and (2) because additions and changes are frequently made, and would continue to be made. -One of the pro-busing slate already on the board (Dumas) voted AGAINST a resolution introduced by James Carney to seek release from the court -Another (Johanek) said publicly he would have voted AGAINST it had he been on the board at the time. -Another (Smith) is EVEN a member of Judge Battisti's monitoring (watchdog) group (OSMCR) Do not be deceived - know the facts! Tudi on je prišel sem pred 40 leti. Tu je nadaljeval že začete in začel in končal nadaljnje študije. Decembra 1949 je prišel z ženo in dvema otrokoma v New York. Nato je mala Kati Delak recitirala pesem »Veter«. J r.nt- S'* j — Nekaj misli o Ameriki — Peter Remec Ko sem pred štiridesetimi leti prišel v to deželo, so me znanci, Slovenci in angleško govoreči, spraševali skoraj vsak dan, kako mi je tukaj všeč (How do you like this country?«). V svoji preprostosti sem odgovarjal: »Zelo dobro, samo...« (»Very much, but...«). Bile so uporabljene tu in tam v Evropi. Zaslužek in uspehi niso bili podeljeni zastonj. Zakaj? Zato ker nismo načrtno gradili svoje državnosti in smo brez svoje suverene države. Vse doslej še nismo dosegli najvišjega političnega ideala slehernega naroda: lastne države. Le lastna država more varovati in braniti slovenske narodne interese, le v lastni državi bomo mogli v polni meri ohranjati in uveljavljati slovensko individualnost — kar je v dobra vsega človeštva —, le s slovensko državo bomo postali sub- , jekt, in ne le predmet, v evropski in svetovni družbi narodov, le če bomo imeli lastno državo, se nam bo mogoče enakopravno pogovarjati in sklepati dogovore in pogodbe z drugimi narodi. Resnične demokracije ni v »demokratičnem centralizmu« in enopartijskem sistemu. Prava demokracija bo uresničena le tam, kjer bodo obveljali: načelo samoodločbe narodov, zaščita osnovnih pravic manjšine in priznavanje krajevne avtonomije, poleg seveda demokratične državne ureditve. Majniško deklaracijo 1989 so podpisali slovenski pesniki, pisatelji in skladatelji, vse opozicionalne politične skupine in gotove študentovske in mladinske organizacije. Franc Šeškar, Miinchen, Nemčija, Harry in Gabriella Outhet, Robert Hendry, Joan Atance, Margaret Barrett, Charlotte in Edward Dalton in Charles in Vera Morrison. — Baragov dom priredi s’lvestrovanje v Baragovem domu.
