St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 15/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 10.4.2011 5. POSTNA NEDELJA 5th SUNDAY OF LENT Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Adress 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Gospod, ko bi bil ti tukaj... Kaj to pomeni? Second Reading Romans 8:8-11 Our lives are Spirit-filled because Christ is living within us. Gospel John 11:1-45 When Jesus restored Lazarus to life and to his family, he hinted at his own resurrection and at its transforming effects on our lives and relationships. Illustration Most of us, at some time or other, have played the game in which someone whispers a message to the next person, who passes it on to his or her neighbour and so on. The last one to receive the message reveals it to all the players, often to the great amusement of the first sender, who discovers that progressive repetition has caused a massive distortion from the original. Verbal messages are often inaccurate. However, in a country where there is high illiteracy, there is often no alternative. Late one night a small group of people from a distant African village arrived at the mission hospital. They had come to collect their newly dead relative. They brought with them two bicycles and spades with which they would transport his body to the nearby graveyard and bury him as soon as it was light. They were filled with sadness and spoke quietly among themselves. The Sister on duty at the hospital went to meet the visitors as they sat at the hospital entrance, waiting to be escorted to the mortuary. To their surprise, she laughed and told the watchman to bring the body. A moment or so later, the "dead" relative came to greet his family, very much alive and sufficiently recovered from his illness to return home with them. His name was similar to that of a man who really had died earlier in the day, causing well-meaning people to carry the wrong message to the wrong village. The relatives were completely transformed. They travelled to the hospital filled with sadness, but left it rejoicing because the one they had thought dead was alive and travelling with them. Gospel Teaching Martha and Mary nursed Lazarus through his final illness, death and burial. The two sisters knew that they had sent an accurate message to Jesus, telling him of the imminence of their brother's death. They also knew that if Jesus and the apostles were to travel immediately, they would see Lazarus before he died. When Jesus eventually arrived, Martha and Mary were not only mourning their brother, they were also bitterly hurt that Jesus had made so little effort to be with his close friends when they most needed him. That is why Martha's C \ "Martha said to Jesus, 'If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.'" words express both a reproach and a hope that Jesus could still do something. Her belief in Jesus was still rudimentary. Ever the pragmatist, instead of expecting Jesus to bring Lazarus to life, she stated the obvious: Lazarus had been dead and buried for four days and "he will smell". Jesus, however, asked the bystanders to roll back the stone at the entrance of the tomb. He prayed to his Father and commanded Lazarus to come forth. At Jesus' words, Lazarus emerged from the tomb, still wrapped in the cloths in which he had been buried. Application It took the raising of Lazarus from the dead for Martha to understand that Jesus possessed the power over life and death that pertains only to God. When Jesus restored life to Lazarus and returned him to his family, he also hinted at his own resurrection. Just as he changed the sorrow of Martha and Mary into joy, so Jesus' victory over death would give new meaning and hope to life. Similarly, although the African family were Catholics and declared in the Creed that they believed in the resurrection, they could not know or understand its astonishing reality. It was when they knew the deep sadness of knowing that they had lost someone they dearly loved, but then discovered that same person was not dead, but was living, that they were able to link their own experi- ence to that of Jesus. Their experience was similar to that of Martha and Mary. Suddenly, the dead person was alive! Their sorrow changed into a profound joy but also an appreciation of the worth of a family member whom they had sometimes taken for granted. The raising of Lazarus tells us not to despair when we lose someone whom we love, for our loved one is still living, albeit in a way that we can neither see nor fully imagine. In today's Gospel, Jesus gives us a foretaste of the impact that his resurrection will make in our own lives. We are not living merely with a memory of someone who died. We are accompanying a living Jesus, whose ongoing love is alive and active.
