Her late husband, Stanley Lipnos, was a fine man., She is mother of a son & daughter both married, and is grandmother of five. The April meeting was well attended. Plans were made foi the approaching bake sale in May. Discussions were held for the annual card party in September. Two teams from Sheboygan attended the Midwest Bowling Turna-ment. Ann Modez gave us a summary on this event. After the meeting a delicious luncheon was served and we were entertained on the accordian by Janice Maurin which jv° enjoyed. Our deep sympathy to the Joseph Godez, Joseph Samsa, Sr. families upon loss of their dear ones and also to the four surviving sisters of Jack Jenko, their only brother. Heartiest congratulations upon our member, Alderman Elsie Braeger who has the distinction of being first woman serving as council president and as acting Mayor on occasions when he is out of the city. BOWLING NEWS For the first time since the middle of October, the Chicago S.W.U. bowling league has a new leader. As of April 23, with only one week left to the season, Dr. Grill was in first place with a record of 63 wins and 36 losses. They lost only twc games in five weeks. Marquette Super Service, the leader for six months, ~fell to second with 60J wins and 38J losses. Lawn Fence remained in third place with 53J wins and 46 losses. Close behind were St. Paul Federal (52i-46J), Zefran Funeral Home (52-47) and Stetina’s Bakery (50-49). Ruth Haas reigned as our "star” in April with a 447 series which included games of 122, 169 and 156. This was 117 pins over her 110 average. Kathy Cepelak was 92 pins over her 128 average with a 476 series. Helen Fitzgerald had the high series of the month — 556. This was 91 pins over her 155 average. She also had a 526 series, with a 207 game. Linda DiGiacomo’s 632 was 87 pins over her 115 average. Geneva Niedziel-ko was 86 pins over her 133 average with a 485. She and her husband, Jack, are married 42 years and are both retired. They have three children and f> grandchildren. They are Marie Milar, Robert Mlinar and Dorothy Curtis; Lisa and Laurie, Frances, and Sandy, Sharon and Sue Ann Curtis. Mrs. Mlinar is a member for many years. She also belongs to St. Joseph’s parish. Her hobby is crocheting, baking and making many patterns of afghans which are most beautiful to see. The Mlinar’s live at 811 Hudson St. in Forest City. BARBARA ZUREK Dear Members: As I write this message to you, I suddenly realize that it is one year since I was elected National President at the 1973 Chicago Convention. Some of the things we have attempted to achieve this past year have met with success. Many challenges still lie before us. As we continue to work "togf'ther” in the coming years, each one of us must strive harder to appreciate good-minded leaders and members. We must be sisterly, friendly and understanding to accomplish goals so that in our new membership campaign called, “Rounding It Out”, we will again count many new members and be a big success. Remember, active officers make active members and active members have one main job to do, secure new members! Thank you for the Easter greetings received from so many of our branches. It feels good to be remembered. I hope each member took time to read the officers’ reports and the Minutes of the yearly Director’s Meeting held at the Home Office in Chicago in February. The reports should give you a good idea of just what is in view for our organization. We should all be grateful that our Home Office National Officers, Secretary, Fanika Humar, Treasurer, Olga Ancel and Editor, Corinne Leskovar, are guiding our organization so zealously to keep us so well-informed on our business and financial operation. And then, the branch reports also, with the bi^s of information, stand jut as being most helpful in helping us to see where the SWU is going. Br. 1, president and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Saye, celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary. Br. 16 member, Sharon Krai, a first place winner at the school Science Fair with a project called Crystalography. Br. 13’s Special Mass foi Mother's Day May 19th and Br. 42’s Mass and Dinner. Br. 38, after receiving a $100 donation from the Minnesota Development Association for a whorthwhile area project decided to give the money the Iron Man Project as a memorial to all iron ore miners. Br. 43 recognizes the talent of their active president, Mary Tratnik, Marie Prisland’s Special Feature in Capsules gives fine briographies of our officers and to our honorary officers, Anna Pachak and Mary lomsic, hard-working pioneers of Colorado and Pennsylvania respectively. Why is it that these ladies did so much for our organization. Where are the younger members to follow in their footsteps? We need members to take the work *hat our wonderful elder members accomplished. How can we reach them? If you know the answer, please let us know. Any suggestions will be helpful. God bless Mrs. Pi island for many more years! «< * # Sad news always seems to be around the corner. Two wall-known workers for our Zveza have passed on to the great beyond. Br. 25 in Cleveland lost Vicki Faletič, an ardent worker with the young and older members. She was crowned Queen at the National Convention in Chicago in 1965 and also was a National Auditor. Br. 19 in Eveleth, Minn, lost their secretary of many years, Mary Lenich who was once a National Auditor and president of Br. 33. It’s a great loss for all of Minnesota. Our sympathy to both families on the loss of their dear ones. They will both be missed by all of us. Br. 103 president, Freda Michelitch is recuperating at home now from her bad fall. She was a great worker for Zveza, holding a office as National Auditor and an ardent campaign worker. She will be missed by many. Mrs. Sustersic was born in Globelj-Sodražica, Slovenia, and immigrated to America, settling In Cleveland, Ohio in 1905. She married her husband Joseph in 1906. He is deceased since 1955. Her eldest son, Joseph, also passed away in 1969 and son, John in October of 1973. These deaths greatly saddened our mother. She has 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mrs. Sustersic has been seriously ill for many, many years and a complete invalid for over 2 years. She is being taken care of in her home by her children. May the good Lord bless her and help her to carry on, resigned in His will. She is a member of Br. 10 of S.W.U. for about 45 years. * * * It is obvious from the above note, that Mrs. Sustersic is a remarkable person. Her family surely loves her and has shown this love in many ways to keep her happy and secure. And that this love is well-deserved in seen in the fact that she received hun- dreds of cards and messages for her birthday for which she is very appreciative. Our Aoril meeting was well-attended in spite of the earlier rain and it's very heartening to know that we have more people to help make plans and decisions for our activities. We’re glad to have Rose Alpner back in our midst after her long absence. Do hope she continues to stay well and letting ut enjoy her generous nature and attendance. We're looking foi future volunteers to get a bowling team or two started again to bowl regularly. Proving Ourselves There are times in our lives when we are weary with the struggle, when the material tnings, passion and sin bid us return, when we cannot seem to muster the enemy, bad companions, the old devil and ourselves to go a step further with ourcelves or with another. We feel almost overcome by the coldness of ourselves — by the endless dryness of the road stretched before us. Our hearts are heavy, our bodies tired, and we wonder how wc can go on. There seems to be no end to our diffi- culties. There is excrutiating pain in growing — in facing the reality of our limitations, acknowledging the darkness and light in ourselves, continually striving to grasp and enter into the whole tension between our experience of utter nothingness before God and at the same time the unlimitable potentialities of the Dersons we are called to become, the persons Jesus loves so much as to suffer and die for. Why, we are created according to his image. We have left the ground of the familiar and the secure, but we have not yet reached our destination. We are somewhere in the hazy unknown. Like Jesus, we wish that we did not have to “drink this cup" (suffer or being in pain), that our Father might take it away. This ;s the purifying experience, a time when the measure of our strength and our fidelity is put to test. We begin to realize that there injst be waiting in life. Creation, birth, death and growing takes time, be cause everything worthwhile in life takes time: time to deepen, to mellow, to rise, to blossom and to flower. The heart cannot be formed in a day, or a year, or alone. It needs others to guide and love it along its way. It needs bread to break, wine to drink and precious memories to cherish. The patience of enduring and waiting begin to teach us what it means to be like Jesus, what it means to seek like Jesus to be faithful to what the Father wills until the end. Now we better understand the petition in Our Father: Thy will be done. party and it all turned out very well. With good cooperation from all officers and members, with prize donations, bakery, md help of people like John Rebernisek who gave a hand selling a good number of tickets at the bar, (most customers kept Theresa Sukys busy at the chuck-o-luck table), we couldn't miss! All prizes were used up and we could have used a few more. So, next fall, we’ll have lo start fresh again. Thanks to all who donated, helped and attended as players. There are too many to mention by name, but we all know the officers play a large part and work to achieve success for our treasury. Further plans were also discussed for the State Convention to be held in September. It was decided to get the caterers that usually serve at St. J’ohn's church activities as they gave a very good and fair offer. Entertainment was discussed and is still open for suggestions. Also, other plans are not final. Hope to get all things ready for the meetings this spring, so please try to be there and offer your support and suggestions! It also was suggested that we try to line up a bus for Lemont, III. July 21st, Zveza Day. All interested people, please contact Mrs. Plesko for further information. This is the annual big affair sponsored by the Chicago branch 2 and along with the church services, we meet many members from other branches as well. Our meeting closed with prayer and a very good lunch was served, donated by several members, Mrs. Novak, Fannie Sestoil and coffee by La-Verne Korpnik and others. It was later than usual when we ended but all members wanted to play our favorite game so we all stayed to enjoy several games before breaking it up. This also helps to give us more "social money”. Once again, ! wish to thank all helpers, donors and those who came in person to make our card party a success. Even though our April meeting fell on Holy Thursday, it was well-attended as most of the ladies dropped in after church services. The main order of business concerned our annual chicken dinner which was to held at Ingratta’s restaurant on the last Tuesday in May. Twenty^five ladies attended six or more meetings last year and are entitled to a reduced rate on their dinner. Besides the widow, Mary, is a daughter, Marie Scheid, one of our former drill team cadets and two other daughters. Anton Popek was buried from St. Joseph's church and rests at St. Joe's Cemuterv. He was a member of various societies and well known in the community. May he rest in peace. Our junior member was elected in the sophomore class as president at St. Francis Academy. She is remembered as the girl with 'he golden voice and sang for our members at many programs. Congratulations, Joyce Wal-szak! Congratulations also to the Rev. Edmund Gregorir.h who is celebrating this month his Silver Jubilee. He is the son of John and Jennie Gregorich who have their home on Vine St. Our member, Marion, is Rev. Edmund’s sister-in-law. She is a member of Branch 39 in Biwabik since 1936 where she neld the office o f president, vice-president, recording secretary and is financial secretary for the last 19 years. Born in Eveleth, her family later moved to Biwabik. Angela graduated from High School in Gilbert. She was married Sept. 14, 1929. Her husband, Louis L., a high school graduate, was an iron ore analyzer in the Washington Plant and custodian in Biwabik schools. He passed away October 1, 1966. Three children were born to the Karish famiiy. Their older son, Louis, is a doctor of medicine practicing in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Marylinn, a graduate of Ihe Siate University in Minneapolis, is merried to William Kaski, while Kenneth, not married, is a teacher in the St. Paul School System. Angela is very much interested in charitable work. When a member dies she helps when needed with food preparations and in taking care of the children. She visits the sick, brings gifts and does errands for them. She is a member of the 4 H Club, Garden Club, Girl Scouts, PTA and chaperons school dances and bus trips. As a member of the Biwabik Chamber of Commerce she is active in the yearly Fourth of July Festival when people from the whole Iron Range attend. She has enrolled 20 new members and hopes to enroll many more. We wish Angela success in furthering the progress of the Branches under her jurisdiction as the new state president. £tate* cfi Cclcradlc-HahAaA-DtiAAcui-i Olga Mesojedec is the newly-elected state president for the above group of states embracing six Branches. She is a 31 year member of Branch 3 in Pueblo which she served as president for several years and is presently the vice-president. She successfuly managed her first state convention last year held in Gunnison, Colorado. "It was a pleasure to work witn such nice ladies”, she wrote. Olga was born in Willard, Wisconsin. Her family later moved to Pueblo, Colorado where she was married July 9, 1932. Her husband, Frank, was employed at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Works for 43 years before retiring in 1969. Two children w«re born to them. Frank J. died at birth and daughter, Erma Jean, a nigh school graduate, was before her marriage employed at the Minnequa State Bank. When their two sons were grown she returned to work at the same Bank. Olga is very enthus.astic about her office and promised to fill her official duties to the best of her ability. She is happy that Branch 92 in Crested Butte is active again. The Colorado Branches shall flourish under her direction. There is still a lot of room for expansion. She held the office of president of her Branch for 12 years, was elected as National Vice-president in 1952 and as State President in 1958. She was born in Soudan, Minnesota and married in Salt Lake City, (Please turn to page 8) ANGELA KARISH OLGA MESOJEDEC ROSE SCOFF STATE PRESIDENTS CONTINUED: Utah, on April 25, 1918. Her husband, Joseph, who died May 31, 1963, worked for 40 years as longshoreman on tne San Francisco water front. Two children were born to the Scoff couple. Their son, Joseph Vincent, a high school graduate and a photographer died December 23, 1968. Rose Vlarie, her daughter, is married to Thomas Gallagher. They have two children, Kathleen Rose and John Patrick, both in high school. Mr. Gallagher graduated from an Agricultural College majoring in Dairy Industries. He served as a U.S. Navy Commander in military service. With No. 40, LORAIN, OHIO Our March and April meetings were well-attended. It sure is nice to see all these new faces at the monthly meetings. In March, we had quite a number of birthdays. At this meeting, Angie Zgonc, Rose Zdovc, Louise Seskar, Helen Škerjanc, Molly Glavan and yours truly entertained. The bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Julius Vargo oi Canton, Ohio. The marriage look place on March 30th at Ss. Cyril and Methodius church in Lorain. Mrs. DiLillo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University and is employed with the Delta Air Lines as a receptionist. Her husband, who graduated from Admiral King High School, received his B.S. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1969. They will reside in Cincinnati. Our sincere congratulations to the his wife he owned and operated a confectionary and bakery store for 25 years then retired last year. His wife, an artist in cake decorating, is still active in this profession. Rose held membership in the United Nations Conference held in San Francisco in 1945 when the organization of UNITED NATIONS was born. She presently is vice-president of the Slovenian American Fraternal and Benefit Society. Rose feels highly honored to represent the five Branches in the Far West with which she keeps in touch by correspondence. She is deeply interested in Zveza’s progress. newlyweds and their families. The May dinner was held at the Country Gardens on W. Layton Ave. We honored our Mother of the Year, Frances Widemsek and there were 58 ladies present — four guests graced our company nnd we gained a new member, Stephany Sterbenz, whom we welcome into the branch. The food was plentiful and delicious. Mary Tratnik, president, welcomed the group with a very special invocation. Fran’s two daughters surprised her by attending which Fran never expected as both live out of town. They presented her with fresh flowers and a fresh plant. The branch presented her with a corsage and a beautiful basket. Fran is very active in our branch with a wonderful personality. Mitz Mohorko also reminded the members of starting to get their teams lined up for (he fall bowling league. The bowling team had their dinner on Wed. May 1st at the Dinner Bell, where the food was fabulous. The bowlers were presented with their prize money and Mrs. Esther Gori-shek, whose team took first place, presented the taam with a beautiful trophy. It was very different from other trophies. On one side is a trophy and next to it a p’rnter. Gorishek’s Bar was awarded first place, Gallun’s Sausage in 2nd place, Ma’s Place in 3rd and SWU Br. 43 in last place. Mitzi Mohorko boiled a 203 on the last Wednesday of the season. Ann Rebernisek was hospitalized again as she br.ike her arm in three places. Ann, our prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. Ann has really met with some serious incidents. The Gallun’s visited their daughter, Margie, in Florida and were later joined by the Irv Vodniks. They toured Florida for two weeks. Pat Zefran, we missed you at the bowling tourney! She was on a Carribean tour. Mrs. Matilda Simcic was at St. Luke’s Hospital and had surgery but is now back at home. Second event of note is our outdoor mass at the Our Lady of Lourdes on Chardon Rd. at 9:30 a.m. followed by breakfast. Reservations are being taken now. This event is June 23rd. At the April meeting, 93 members attended and we enjoyed the companionship and good will of our members and saw the initiation pledge of 32 new members marching in with our newly outfitted Marie Prisland Cadets. We’ve picked the Mother of the Year as Marge Andrican., W e are proud to have her as our Mother for the year as she is active in bowling and does great in it. She also has a heart of gold. She is a grandmother of five and mother of three. She has two daughters, Snirley and Susan and a son, John. Her husband, Eli, is a physical dystrophy patient and Marge has to take care of h.m as he is in a wheel chair. With all her extra duties, she still has time to do good for our branch and takes nart in everything that she is called upon to do. Her heart is big and wi'ling to lend a helping hand to anyone that asks for it. She bakes for our bake sales and participates in all the activities. W e all know that she will do her duty and hold her head high. We held our meeting again at the Little Grove and there sure was a nice turn out of members. Our summer will soon be here and then we will discontinue our meetings until September. So, please try to attend the last one. We ended the meeting with a prayer by president, Josephine Oswald and then went on to the social part of the evening at which time our hostesses, sisters Frances Jerkovich, Muriel Sabotini, Dorothy Ban, Phyllis Pavatich and Dorothy Pavich served a delicious lunch. We were a little inconvenienced by being moved to a classroom because of a Passover Dinner but our 27 members didn't mind too much.. It w&s fun watching everyone getting in and out of the seats behind the little desks. I, for one, got stuck! We enjoyed games and seeds were distributed for this time of the year and it was very thoughtful. We draped our charter for a longtime member who passed away at the age of 93, Mrs. Ann Rapinac. We have wonderful memories of her because she was an active member and we will surely miss her now. To her children, we can say only that we are sorry and hope they can follow in her footsteps which they are doing now. Her daughters are Elizabeth Spolar, Margaret Skorich and daughter-in-law, Ann Rapinac. God bless her and may she rest in peace. We also had two lovely visitors from California, the daughters of Mrs. Rapinac, Frances Stigar and Sophie Garmaker. It was a p'easure to have them. When back in Hibbing again, come to see us. T V T and »AS«111* For a luncheon at my home recently I served NEVER FAIL-CHICKEN DIVAN, FRESH FRUIT with DRESSING, Potica and Dobosch Torte. Since the chicken dish and the fresh fruit dressing were new recipes to me I thought you too might enjoy trying them. The excellent Dobosh Torte recipe which appeared in this column in June, 1966, was sent then to me by Miss Alenka Javornik of Branch No. 103, Washington D.C. Since it is Kathy’s favorite I have made it for her birthday ever since. If you would like the recipe please write me. NEVER FAIL — CHICKEN DIVAN 8 CHICKEN BREASTS (4 doubles) 2-10 oz. packages frozen broccoli spears 1 can Campbell's Cheddar Cheese Soup (11 oz.) 1 can cream of chicken soup (10% oz.) 1 cup mayonnaise, if desired 1 can Durkee’s O & C French Onions (3 oz.) Bake chicken at 350 degrees for 1£ hours without butler and without seasoning in jelly roll pan covered tightly with foil. Cook broccoli as directed on package (do not overcook). Combine the soups. Add the mayonnaise if you're going to use it (I didn’t). In an 8 x 12 inch pan arrange the drained broccoli. Place rnoderate size chicken pieces which have been deboned on top of broccoli. No seasoning is necessary. Spread the combined soups over all and top with the canned onions. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. This may be prepared the previous day then baked somewhat longer before serving to heat thoroughly. Note: The recipe was doubled to serve 16. The women loved this FRESH FRUIT DRESSING which was available in a separate serving dish. The fresh strawberries, watermelon balls, drained mandarin oranges and pineapple chunks, banana and apple slices were arrange separately on a ■arge glass plate. This dressing would be excellent with all the summer fruit coming on the market for a salad. FRESH FRUIT DRESSING Rind and juice of one lemon Rind and juice of one orange 1 rounded teaspoon flour £ cup sugar 1 egg, beaten Mix rind and juices in a sauce pan. Mix the flour with the sugar and add to juices. Add beaien egg. Cook over moderate heat until thickened. Can be prepared the day before and refrigerated. «*« At a Girl Scout luncheon I asked the church women who prepared the food for their reciDcs. TUNA CASSEROLE Serves 6. 1 can mushroom soup Vi cup water (rinse mushroom soup can) 1 can tuna fish, regular size 1 cup celery, sliced y4 cup onions or 2 teaspoons dry onions 3 oz. can Chinese Noodles Mix first 5 ingredients and bake in 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes, uncovered. Cover with Chinese Noodles and bake 15 minutes longer. JELLO FRUIT SALAD Serves 20 3 packages Dream Whip, mixed and prepared as for 2 packages 1-3 oz. package jello, any flavor (strawberry was used) 1-16 oz. carton cottage cheese 1 cup minature marshmallows 2 cans fruit (well drained) The women used: a 14£ oz. can sliced pineapple, cut into chunks One pound 14 oz. can fruit cocktail Mix together and refrigerate for at least a couple hours and serve with a sprig of parsley. COLONIAL CHICKEN BOWL SALAD 3 cups diced cooked chicken One (16 ounce) can fancy mixed Chinese vegetables, rinsed and well drained. 2 tablespoons chopped onions V/2 cup« celery, thinly sliced y2 cup chopped green pepper 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons soy sauce 34 cup salad dressing or mayonnaise Slivered almonds (optional) Chicken should be cooked ahead and thoroughly cooled before dicing. Combine all the ingredients and mix lightly. Sprinkle slivered almonds on top, if desired. Four servings. Unforgettable Weddings Since I enjoy listening to our daughter’s singing at weddings I attend a number of them. A few had unique circumstances. On one occasion the groom arrived twenty-five minutes late. While Kathy continued singing throughout the long delay, the distraught bride tearlully paced in front of the church. Finally the car arrived — the best man who was driving the groom to the church, much to his horror, had suddenly realized as he was approaching Madison that he had forgotten the wedding rings. The twenty-six mile trip back to his home seemed forever., At another wedding, guests were asked to bring bells to the church service. As the bridal couDle left the main altar Father instructed everyone to ring their bells. That was a joyous innovation. However, in the most memorable wedding, the bride wore the dress of her dreams. One week before her wedding the $300.00 dress she had ordered had not arrived. The proprietor offered in its place any dress regardless of price. She selected the one that she just adored but couldn’t possible afford — it cost $1,000.00. The tall, dark-haired bride looked stunning in ner dream made of organdy-like material. The large flowered soft lace of which the top was made was repeated in the crown of the wide-brimmed picture hat she wore. The three layered full skirt attached to the high waist was scalloped at the hem as was tne matching long cape. Preceding the bride in the ceremony, the five bridesmaids and the flower girl wearing brignt yellow dresses carried ruffled-edged closed yellow parasols in the crook of their arms. After the Marriage Service and as the entire wedding party stood at the foot of the altar the parasols were opened simultaneously. The girls looked pretty with their parasols as they followed the bridal couple back down the aisle. Of course I’ll never forget the time at my own wedding when my husband was asked to stay in one of the rooms until departure so he would surely not see me in my wedding gown before the ceremony. In the excitement the other cars drove off without him! Unperturbed, Bob and I rode to the wedding together, but I know that his seeing me in my wedding gown before the ceremony was not unlucky! Have a wonderful summer, HERMINE Two sons graduate this month THOMAS No. 73, WARRENSVILLE HGTS, OHIO Our 38th Ann;versary Mass was held April 21, 1974 at St. Jude’s Church, Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Father John who officiated at the Mass, paid tribute to the group as a whole, and his kind words were deeply appreciated. After the Mass, several of the ladies went to the Holiday Inn in North Randall, Ohio, for breakfast as well as a social gathering. One of our Junior Members, John Tomsick, son of Mr. & Mrs. Tomsick (J'o Ann), grandparents Mr. & Mrs. John Turk (Josephine), made his First Holy Communion May 4, 1974, at Holy family Church, Parma, Ohio. Another of our Junior Members, Veronica Kunka, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Lasik, being an honor student, was able to go with a group of students from Garfield Heights Junior High to Italy. This was a 10 day tour for the students, accompanied by one of the teachers from the junior high. The tour was not only educational, and a trip they will remember all their lives, but traveling without their parents gave them a chance to learn responsibility and various other traits which will help make them all better adults. Mr. & Mrs. Frank Yoger (Ann) just returned from a five week vacation in California where two of their married daughters live, and I know they really enjoyed their trip. Sorry to report that member Rose Spremulli’s beloved Mother passed away recently. We til wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to your entire family, Rose, and oui thoughts and prayers are with you. We were alarmed to hear so many of our meml.ers ware ill and hospitalized. Mrs. Alvie Jerin was operated on last week. Catherine Go-lick and Anna Krancic had x-rays taken and Mary Keinz, our secretary, had the flu. Mary Cenkar returned to the hospital wh.jn not better at home. We wish them all a quick recovery. For Mother’s Day we had dinner at Beck’s Night Club ;n Peru. Those that attended enjoyed it very much. We also discussed our Zarja at the last meeting and concurr with our National Secretary, Fanika Humar that Zarja is too costly. Well, we all know that everything went up in price and so did Zarja. Other larger organizations complain also. Our Editor, Co-rinne, spoke about this at the previous convention altho she is glad that so many write in Zarja. We think some of this could be helped if the writers shorten the articles a bit. We will discuss this later, I’m sure. Next meeting is in June. See you then. JOSEPHINE LIVEK No. 95, SO. CHICAGO, ILL. The actual anniversary of our branch was March 1st. We are 35 years old and we found it necessary to postpone all the celebrating. We have been a very busy branch and filled our quota of socials for this year. There was no business discussed at our April meeting; instead we had a fashion show presented by American Airlines with 3 collection of contemporary adaptations of perfect travel dresses which lets you arrive and depart wrinkle-dree in figure flattering knit dresses and most packable, The graduating class cf Bedford High School will include two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Majercik, 31 Eldred Avenue, Bedford, Ohio. The young men, Gerald and Thomas, will graduate on June 12th at the Blossom Music Center. Thomas has been a member of the A Capella Choir for two years and a member of the Madrigal Singers. He was also a member of Boy’s Glee. He hopes to continue his education primarily in the field of music. Gerald, 19, hqs been a student in the Occupational Work Experience Program, a prognm which teaches the responsibility of working while learning. Gerald was recently awarded the trophy as the outstanding senior in that program. As a part of the O.W.E. program, he has worked for the City of Bedfnrd for two years. He is enrolled at Cuyahoga Community College where ha will study Fire Technology, his ultimate goal that of becoming a firefighter. Other children in the Majercik Family include Stephen who is married and lives in Kent. Stephen is an ambulance driver with am Emergency Victim Care Specialist rating. Another son, Michael, has plans that include entering Cleveland Institute of Art in the Fall and jetting married in the summer of 1975. Mary is a student at Lumen Cordium High School, and Mark attends Chanel High School. Mrs. Evelyn Majercik, and her daughter Mary are members of Branch No. 73 in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Evelyn’s mother, Mrs. Tony J. Walters, was a charter member of that branch. Our heartiest wishes to the boys and their family. easy-moving clothes. See you all then. MANDA SARICH Again, with unexpected suddeness, death has come among us. The news of the untimely death of Manda Sa-rich came as a great shock. Her departure was sudden, unexpected and particularly distressing. She will always be remembered for her sweet and kindly mannerism with everyone she came in contact with. She was in every sense a real lady and I was privileged to be her friend. Her presence at all of our meetings and affairs will be missed and her many kind contributions to cur branch. The example she had set will long continue to influence and inspire us. May she enjoy her eternal rest and the rewards she has famed. She has written these slories not only as a way (o show her personal love and appreciation for ail the services they have given to Zveza, but to again bring us together in a common identity and give us a feeling of sisterhood to help us carry on in this work and reach the goals she has dedicated her life for. God gave her the ambi'Jon and talent to organize the Slovenian Women's Union and carry it on her shoulders for the past 47 years. It is her dearest wish that we will all keep Zveza in our hearts as it is in hers, for another 47 years ahead. We have her good example to make the work easier and burden lighter. This is her birthday month. Most of you know that she came to America as a young woman, leaving her beloved homeland and striking out, a lonely and frightened girl, for whatever the world would hold for her. She came with the courage and tenacity that few women even today have had to display. The spirit of “women’s liberation" has always been deep in her heart. She is the wife of a noble and fine gentleman, John Prisland, with whom she has lived ever 63 years. They reared three children, Ted, an architect living in Evanston, III., daughter Margaret who is secretary of Br. 1 and daughter Hermine, out Pots and Pans columnist and secretary of the SWU Scholarship Fund, which her mother founded 25 years ago. Their married children are grandparents themselves, so the Prisland household at reunion time, is full indeed. What makes Mrs. Prisland s o unique in this world? Naše glasilo so pretekli mesec- — posvečen materam — polnile lepe slike in zanimivi življenjepisi Častnih Mater. ZARJA se je brala kot Knjiga Življenja. Tudi v domovini so matere počastili na poseben način. List NOVI TEDNIK, izhajajoč v Celju, si je nadel nalogo počastiti matere, ki so dale življenje desetim in več otrokom. Pod imenom “Njihovo življenje je Materinstvo” je list dve leti in pol oglaševal shod ter zbiral imena tistih mater, ki to počastitev zaslužijo. Prijavilo se je 92 mater, dospelo na shod jih je 125. Odbor je imel pripravljenih le 100 šopkov in 100 skromnih daril; na hitro so preskrbe- li še ostale. Prireditev se je vršila v Slovenskem ljudskem gledališču v Celju. Ker je tisto jutro po malem snežilo — bilo je meseca marca — se je odbor bal, da matere iz oddaljenih krajev ne bodo mogle priti — a prišle so in tudi take, ki svoje udeležbe niso prijavile. Z materami so prišli sinovi, hčerke, vnuki, zeti, snahe. Pretresljivo je bilo, ko je sin na rokah prinesel svojo mamo iz avtomobila v gledališče k programu in nato v dvorano, kjer je bil serviran prigrizek. To je bila Kosmačeva mati iz Rečice ob Savinji, Anna Veninšek, moja soseda in sošolka, mati deset otrok. Kljub bolezni, ki jo je naredila invalidno ji je moralo biti gorko pri srcu videč, da jo otroci ljubijo in spoštujejo. Znano je po vsem re-čiškem trgu, kako je Kosmačeva mati cd svojih otrok v bolezni in na starost ljubeznivo postrežena in preskrbljena. Srečna mati! Pokrovitelj shoda je bila tovarna športa in modne konfekcije TOPER v Celju s sodelovanjem občin celjskega okraja. Glavni urednik lista NOVI TEDNIK in RADIA CELJE, Jože Volfad, je matere pozdravil z besedami: "Drage mame: Naposled smo se srečali. Skoro tri leta je minulo, odkar smo se odločili za akcijo “Njihovo življenje je Materinstvo”. Dale ste nam dragoceno darilo, kako se mora človek boriti za najlepše, za človeka, kar sicer najbolje zna mati iii še posebej tista mati, ki hoče večkrat, mnogokrat začutiti otrokov prvi jok in tudi takrat, ko je najbolj hudo, reče- če jih ima devet kaj jesti, tudi za desetega ne bo zmanjkalo. Današnji čas ni naklonjen mnogim rojstvom in velikim družinam, že med našo akcijo smo srečali matere, ki jih je okolje po strani gledalo zaradi številne družine. Povedale ste nam mnogo zgodb, v katerih je bilo mnogo sonca prav tako pa tudi temnih senc, a to je življenje. Vaše zgodbe, vaše življenje, vaša materinstvo, je najlepša himna pravemu življenju. Želimo, da se danes dobro počutite in — hvala za toliko slovenskih življenj!” Mimica Colnarič — njena mama je bila tudi v dvorani — je o svoji mami takole napisala in na prireditvi prečita la: Naša mama! Stanujemo v majhni vasici Peredenca pri Šmarju. Naša hiša je majhna, s slamo krita. Imamo dve majhni sobi in kuhinjo. Naša mama že od zgodnje mladosti ni imela nič dobrega. Hodila je pomagat kmetom, da si je prislužila denar za obleko in čevlje. Tudi doma je morala veliko delati. Ko je bila stara 19 let je šla delat v steklarno v Rogaško Slatino. Tu je spoznala našega ata, s katerim se je poročila. Ker je bil tudi on reven, sta morala stanovati v tujih hišah. Enkrat jima je celo streha zgorela nad glavo. Ljudje so staršem očitali, kaj bosta s tolikimi otroki..... Mama mora veliko delati, da smo vsi čisti, da imamo kaj jesti. Z očetom morata prislužiti, da je za šolo, za obleko in obutev. Srečni smo zdaj, da smo pod svojo streho, skromno, borno, vendar svojo............. Urednik je pristavil: Colnaričjevi giadijo novo hišo. Hiša raste počasi kot je to mogoče za žep delavca. Tovariši! Upam, da ste ga vse prav lopo praznovale. Saj je to prav poseben praznik naših mamic. Celo leto se žrtvujejo za nas vse in vem, da je en dan res premalo za ves trud in skrbi, ki jih imajo z nami. Drage naše MAME; hvala Vam lepa im Bog naj vas živi. Mesec Maj je za nami in julij že trka na vrata. Mnogo naših članic ima dosti dela z "vrtičkanjem." Vsako leto jih vedno več začenja s tem. Ene iz praktičnih razlogov, druge pa zato, ker rade “brskajo" po zemlji in uživajo ob pogledu na lepo urejene in posajene gredice. Nekje se bogato šopiri solata, na drugi gredi se rdeči paradižnik blešči v soncu, pa paprika, petršiljček in korenjček. Seveda tudi rož ne manjka. Res jc. lepo pogledati na tak vrtiček. Pa to ni vse. Ta mesec je prav posebnega pomena za nas iz llinois: 21. julij je naš Dan Zveze v Lemontu. Me se še prav posebno pripravljamo, saj smo gostiteljice ni ta dan. Se še niso posušile solze, ko je 11. apr. nam umrla druga članica, Anne Burns, njeno dekliško ime je bilo Ana Prince. Zelo tesno smo bile povezane med seboj v srčnem prijateljstvu, posebno ko smo leta 1965 skupno potovale v staro domovino. Vsi njeni peteri otroci sledijo svoji materi v vzgledu darežljivosti in dobrote. Pokojna je bila podpreds. Taki obiski so namreč dokaz hvaležnosti, dejansko znamenje ljubezni in izkazovanje božjega češčenja, ki smo ga dolžni Kristusu Gospodu, pričujočemu v tem zakramentu. češčenje presvetega Rešnjega telesa močno nagiblje dušo k gojitvi “socijalne ljubezni”, tiste ljubezni s katero dajemo skupni dobrini prec'nost pred zasebno, s katero napravljamo stvar skupnosti, stvar župnije, stvar vesoljne cerkve za svojo stvar in raztegnemo svojo ljubezen na ves svet, ker vemo, da povsod bivajo Kristusovi udje. LENICH Človek ne ve ne ure ne dneva ke-daj pride čas za odhod v večnost. Neisprosna smrt je pretrgala nit življenja naši tajnici in blagajničarki Mary Lenich. Sestra Lenich je delovala v naši podružnici št. 19 nad 30 let. Zelo jo bomo pogrešale kajti ona je 6krbela za vse, v podružnici, ona nam je bila kod prava mati. Za vsako članico je imela vedno prijazno besedo. Mary Smoltz Lenich je 'bila rojena dne 7 septembra 1894 v Ely, Minnesota. Dekliško ime je bilo Pahule. Ko je bila stara tri leta so se starši vrnili v staro domovino in tam je oče umrl. Nato se je vrnila v Ameriko, na Chisholm, Minnesota, kjer se je poročila z John Smoltzeiri, doma iz Brega pri Ribnici, dne 20 maja, 1910. V zakonu so se rodili štirje otioci ki so še vsi živi in poročeni. Prvi mož je umrl še v mladih letih, poslala je vdova z mladimi otroci, čez nekaj let se je poročila z Antonom Lenich v Evelethu. Drugi njen mož je umrl letos dne 15 februarja. Izguba moža jo je tako prizadela, da njene moči niso prenesle in je dne 31 marca odšla za možem v večnost. Draga sestra Mary: Tvoja dobra dela bodo ostala vodno v blagem spominu med nami. Počivaj draga sestra in prijateljica v miru božjem, MARY MENART tajnica ST. 20, JOLIET, ILL. Naše sožalje družini Mary Popek, katera je izgubila soproga Antona Popek po daljši bolezni. Bil je dober faran cerkve Sv. Jožefa, ter bil pokopan iz farne cerkve na domače pokopališče Sv. Jošefa. Poleg soproge, Mary, zapušča tudi tri Hčerke, katera ena, Mary Scheid, je tudi naša dobra članica in bivša kadetka. Naj v miru Božjem počiva! Za predsednico pri Sophomore class na St. Francis Academy je bila izvoljena naša mladinska članica Joyce Walczak. Naše čestitke in še mnogo uspeha, Joyce! Čestitke tudi Rev. Edmund Grego-rich, sinu naših dolgoletnih faranov, John in Jennie Gregorich, katera si-naha Marion, je naša članica. Srebrni jubilej bo Rev. Gregorich praznoval v Manteno, kjer io že nekaj let za župnika v lepi cerkvi. Te dni je nam v spomin poklicala žogometne igre v našem farnem parku Sv. Jošefa, Bea Metesh, sedaj Zobel z njenim opisovanjem in sliko v H.N. časopis, kjer je bila p r i Baseball igri kot "edina dekle v letu 1948.” Bea je naša članica dolgo let in tudi njena pok. mama. Bea je bila tudi kapitanka mladinskem krožku “drill teama”. Naše čestitke! Pridita na sejo prihodnji mesec, potem imamo počitnice za par mesecev. Vas vse lepo pozdravljam in želim zdravja v poletnem času, onim ki bodo šle na obisk v Evropo, pa srečno in zdravo potovanje. JOSEPHINE ERJAVEC ŠT. 21, CLEVELAND, OHIO Dne 1. maja smo počastile zaslužno članico kot mater leta, sestro Rose Koško iz Župančičeve družine. Rose je dobra žena za njeno družino in vsakega, ki rabi pomoč, ona rada pomaga, je aktivna povsod in vesele narave. Tega večera se je udeležilo lepo število članic in prijateljev in večerja je bila vsem po volji. Srečno številko je dvignila Mrs. Blazic, dobila je pa predsednica, Rose Koško. Čestitamo! Navzoče so bile tudi gl. uradnice. Sporočam, da je pred mesecem umrla Mary Vehar., žalujočim naše sožalje. Pokojni pa večni mir. Iskrene čestitke veljajo Al in Frances Škoda, ki sta obhajala lepo 46 letnico poroke. Želimo jima še obhajanje zlate in diamantne obletnice. ANNA JESENKO ST. 25, CLEVELAND, OHIO Zopet smo izgubile eno našo dobro in zvesto delavko, Mrs. VICKI FALETIČ. Pokojna je bila vse njeno življenje agilna članica naše podr. in Zveze. Že kot mlado 15 letno dekle je pri podr. nastopala, kadar smo ime!e kakšno igro ali proslavo, jo ona pela skupno z njeno sestro Olgo. Bilo je res lepo. Pok. je bila vedno prijazna do vseh mladih ali starih, za vsakega je imela prijazni nasmejani obraz. Bog ji naj v nebesih povrne za vse kar je dobrega storila za našo Zvezo. Naša Vicki je bila nekaj let tudi v glavnem uradu kot nadzornica, dokler se ni mestu odrekla zaradi šibkega zdravja. Ravno tako smo tudi izgubili dobro društveno delavko za našo organizacijo, MARY LENICH. Ona je tudi redne dopisovala v Zarjo. Jaz sem vedne rada brala njene dopise, ker sem jo osebno poznala. BPa je izvoljena v gl. urad 1, 1939 v Chisholm, Minn, kot gl. nadzornica. Takrat je bila tudi izvoljena Josephine Erjavec za gl. tajnico, ker Mrs. Josephine Racic ni več prevzela. Tako smo hodile na seje gl. odbora k Mrs. J. Erjavec v Joliet in sobe smo pa imele pri Mrs. Josephine Muster. Spomnim se tudi kako smo lepo složno delovale, “vse za eno — ena za vse”. Prav lepo smo se imele, varčevale smo vsak dolar. Ne smem pozabiti našo dobro Albino in Mrs. Železnikar, ki sta tudi bile naše zveste delavke in posebno še naj omenim našo ustanoviteljico, Mrs. Marie Prisland, ki je postavila temelje naši organizaciji. Ona je tudi dobra dopisovalka in Irthko bi se napisala lepa knjiga o vseh omenjenih pridnih de'avk. Posebna zahvala velja tudi naši urednici, Corinne Lesvokar za lepe Zarje. Pri naši podr. gremo kar lepo naprej. Naša tajnica se je kar lepo uži- vela v tajništvo, ako je še kaj potrebno, pa sem ji vedno na razpolago, samo prosim Vas sestre bodite točne s plačevanjem. Domovini. — Vsem bolnim ljubega zdravja in vse lepo pozdravlja ter na "veselo svidenje 9. junija!” MARY OTONIČAR ŠT. 38, CHISHOLM, MINNESOTA Pomlad je tukaj, boezen nas je malo popustila in sonce nas zopet prijetno greje in tako bo s toplim vremenom tudi oživelo naše delovanje. S to željo se up-im pridružiti našim novim sosestram, ki so pristopile k nam in bodo nade'jevale naše delo. Iskreno želim, da b' nadomestile izgube lanskega leta, ko je odšlo v večnost kar 14 članic. To leto je bil ludi slab začetek. Takoj v prvem mesecu je umrla naša dobra članica, Sylvia Petrich. Zadela jo je nesreča ob izgubi ljubljene hčerke in to mislim, da je izpodkopalo njeno zdravje. Zmprnj je bila živahna in čvrsta, potem je Pa kar omagala. Rada je bila v družbi in pomagala je rada kjer je le mogla, seveda usdda je odločila drugače in njeno delo je dokončano. Zapušča še dve hčerki in vnuke, ki jo močno pogrešajo. Doma je bila iz Prezide pri Ložu v Sloveniji. Naj v miru počiva! Naj tudi pripomnim, mogoče se je delegatinje spo- minjajo, ker se je udeležila Zvezine konvencije v VVashingtonu, D.C. Drugo žalostno novico smo prejele o smrti MARY SMOLTZ LENICH. Dva tedna pred smrtjo Toneta, sta bila pri nas in smo še šalili in obujali spomine od naših mladih let in tudi Zvezo smo imeli na piogramu, ker bo Zvezin dan na Hveleth in jo je že skrbelo, da bo vse lepo izpadlo. Tonetova smrt je Mary hudo prizadela in ob njegovem pogrebu, je že bila precej bolna, toda ni se podala v bolnišnico, čeprav bi to bilo potrebno. Nekaj tednov pozneje, je tudi ona preminula. Tako je tudi njeno delo končano na tem svetu. Bila je vneta delavka za Zvezo in podr. Bila je naša prva predsednica.. Na ustanovni seji naše podr. št. 38, ki se je vršila v naši hiši dne 12. jan. 1930, so bile sledeče ustanovne članice: od katerih še živijo naslednje ustanovni-ce: Augustina Baraga, Mary Pahu'e, Agnes Sega, Anna Trdan. Od usta-novnic so nas naslednje že za v:dno zapustile: Mary Pluth, Mary Zurga, Mary Knaus, Johana Marolt, Mary Gersich, in Mary Smoltz. Vsem tem pokojnim sosestram, naj bo Bog milostljiv in luč nebeška naj Vas obseva. Pozdrav vsem članicam in bolnim ljubega zdravja.
