Raising Taxes May Become More Taxing by Ohio State Representative Ron Šuster Voters may have the opportunity to decide whether a three-fifths vote by members of the Ohio General Assembly should be required to raise taxes under a resolution that passed the Ohio House by a vote of 62-37 in June. Substitute House Joint Resolution 9 (HJR 9) was supported by both Democrats and Republicans. HJR 9, dubbed the “Taxpayer Protection Amendment,” proposes two changes to the Ohio Constitution. First, it would give Ohioans direct protection from increased taxes by requiring a three-fifths majority vote in the Ohio House and Senate to enact any increase in state taxes or to repeal any tax exemption currently available to Ohio residents. The Ohio Constitution now requires that proposals to create or raise taxes receive a majority vote to pass. That means that at least 17 of the 33 members of the Ohio Senate and 50 of the 99 members of the Ohio House are necessary to pass the new tax or a tax increase. Under the Resolution, 20 Senate votes and 60 House votes would give Ohio taxpayers indirect protection from increased taxes by protecting local governments from state-imposed unfunded mandates. Opponents of the Resolution argue that requiring a three-fifths majority to pass tax hikes sends the messge that legislators place more importance on money than other issues. They point to other legislative decisions made this session on the death penalty and abortion, and ask why these issues only required a constitutional majority to pass. They also raise the point (Continued on page 6) SENOŽEČE, Slovenia — Slovenia is a country again, for the first time in more than a thousand years. In tiny Senožeče (pronounced Seh-noh-ZHE-cheh), lazy cows chew grass on a hill and a high sun lulls the shepherd. The idyllic scene belies the tortured history of this rolling land in the Balkan shadows. One woman saw World War 1 soldiers, her daughter faced Nazi tanks, and a great-granddaughter trembled under the bombers that attacked in June 1991, after Slovenia declared its independence from Yugoslavia. “One day, a bunch of planes appeared, roaring in the sky and getting closer,” says Mojca Sotlar, 16. “Then they hit, somewhere near here. We thought we’d be next.” Despite its planes and tanks, Danica Concert The Slovenian Mixed Singing Chorus Danica (meaning Morning Star) will perform its formal concert for northeast Ohio on Saturday, September 2 in St. Vitus Auditorium, 6111 Glass Avenue, Cleveland. The Danica concert is part of the overall year-long program for St. Mary’s Parish in Col-linwood. They are celebrating their 90 year. The 44 members of Danica will sing in Slovenian, Latin, English, German and Scandinavian languages. Danica members hail from the community of St. Primus in the province of Carinthia. The theme for their concert tour is “Exodus.” The Slovenians are a distinct minority in Carinthia with an estimated population of 50,000 persons. The Slovenians have resided in Carinthia for over 1,200 years. Mr. Stanko Polzer is the musical director of Danica. Danica will also visit Fair-field Ct., New York, Washington, DC, and Toronto. Danica is scheduled to be in northeast Ohio from August 31 through September 4. This concert will also highlight the 50th anniversary of the emigration of Slovenians after World War II, particularly to the United States and Canada. the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army was beaten back by well-armed local militias. The fighting was over in 10 days and a nation was born, a peaceful spectator to the massacres in Croatia and Bosnia that followed. Now, after 46 years of communism, this newly independent nation of 2 million people living in an area about the size of Massachusetts is embarked on another huge change — to capitalism. Under the late Yugoslav leader, Josip Broz Tito, Slovenia shared a special brand of communism that was open to the West, borrowing dollars to finance industries that sold goods to the East and the Third World. When Tito took over after World War II, Senožeče was a farming community. The communist zeal to industrialize has left the village of 500 with only two full-time farmers, about 60 cattle, a herd of goats and empty barns. Most of the people of Senožeče are employed at a textile mill, started 40 years ago in the barn of a family who had left for America, and a car-parts factory. Millworkers wearing earplugs toil over raucous, green machines. Raw material for sheets, diapers and gauze swirl around them like cotton candy. It’s the image of a poor proletariat. But it’s deceptive because the workers, mostly women, own the place. They bought out the state-run plant this year, with the $3,500 stock vouchers Slovenia gave each citizen, a gift to jump-start democracy. Now, it’s time to sweat for profit. And it’s a culture shock. A new work ethic The factory director, Rado Meden, mimes a worker’s idea of Western round-the-clock action: “Who me? I’m going to start working at midnight? That’s when I sleep best! Are you crazy? The village factory’s 16-hour day won’t change anytime soon, says Meden, who is 66. An independent Slovenia lost a now-hostile Yugoslavia as its major market. Freedom brought “a kind of earthquake, a suddenly shrunken production,” says Meden. The mill had to cut production by half. The 90 workers are now speeding up to Western standards to earn their meager $400 or so a month, making goods for England, France, Germany and Italy, as well as Slovenia. “People have a certain nostalgia for the ‘old times’,” says Meden, who for 30 years has been president of a community board for seven villages, including Senožeče. Under communism, he says, “with little work, we lived relatively well.” Though few were rich, Yugoslavs enjoyed free health care and education, lifetime job security and a guaranteed pension. Banks offered loans to anyone at interest rates as low as 1 percent, or less, while inflation and the national deficit soared. To survive now, “we must change our attitude toward work,” says the factory boss. “We’ll have to switch from big, state-owned companies to smaller, private firms that will move fast, adapt fast.” When villagers meet on Senozece’s narrow, winding roads, they argue about whom to elect from dozens of bickering political parties testing thousands of new laws in Ljubljana, the capital that’s about an hour’s drive away. At the modern schoolhouse on a village meadow, Kristjan Radan, 11, a truck driver’s son, remembers communism as “ a lot of politicians having lots of meetings around tables.” And what’s democracy? “Even more meetings.” He and many of his friends live in homes that have a telephone, a car, a computer and a cow. The youths, like their young nation, are squeezed between a simpler past, a high-tech future and Balkan ghosts of war. At night, through the windows of the whitewashed homes huddled on the slopes, one glimpses faces lighted by television sets that show former countrymen killing each other in Bosnia, 100 miles away. By dawn, that war seems forgotten as people turn to daily tasks. They thought freedom would bring “only positive changes, a better, a more pleasant life, a higher standard,” says Rado Meden. “The truth is, these changes will make life harder for many.” Crossroads of Europe Slovenians last ruled (Continued on page 5) AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, AUGUST 3, 1995 2 Jim’s Journal James V. Debevec The Korean War veterans now have their war memorial in Washington. About time. Liberals still fret over whether the U.S. should have dropped the atomic bomb in 1945. Ask Tony Grdina. He’ll tell you. He emphatically says he wouldn’t be here today, if that bomb hadn’t been dropped. Where will the next major conflict take place? That’s easy. It’s going to be held right here in the U.S. While crawling to work this morning I was wondering how long this construction was going on. I remember being stuck on the same freeway when Dennis Kucinich was mayor. — And that was many, many years ago. I was driving in a General Motors disaster called a “Corvair.” It was a great car, except the motor was in the back and its cooling fan belt ran at right anglesjind would break once a year. But that wasn’t the problem. The problem was it leaked exhaust fumes in the cab and consequently you couldn’t turn on the heater and had to keep the windows open. Sitting in a construction zone, 10 degrees below zero with no heater and the windows open, you don’t forget these things, even 20 years later. This morning, after finally getting off the crawling freeway, I turned into E. 72 St. That’s also under construction this year — and most of last year. Then I turn on to St. Clair. Guess what? Sure enough — more construction. That started at the end of June. While reminiscing about the good old days BC (Before Construction) with Father Richard Evans, Assistant Pastor of St. Vitus Parish, the other day, he recalled that last year there was no way to get on the freeway. Ah, yes. I remember it well. You went on E. 55th. The entrance ramp was closed. You drove back on St. Clair to E. 72nd St. It too was closed. Then to MLK. It too was closed. You figured somewhere there must be a way to get on the darn freeway. So you drove downtown, then to the airport, circled around the 100th Bomber Group Restaurant, and got on I 71 so you could get to Richmond Hts. Last year at Lloyd Rd., in Wickliffe, our star salesman was standing still in traffic with the sun beating down in the middle of summer. All of a sudden, a motorist went berserk, moved his car out of the stationary line, ran over about 20 barrels and headed up the hill. The cars around him honked in support. A police car stationed nearby took off after him. But some disgruntled motorists effectively blocked his path. The impatient motorist got away. Where will the next major battle be fought? Well, one day everyone in this country is going to get sick and tired of spending an hour stuck in traffic and get out of their cars and shove the construction equipment into the lake — and TAKE THEIR HIGHWAYS BACK! It will be called “The Battle of the Barrels.” When people go to E. 9th St. they won’t be there to admire the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’ll be there to scorn the scrapers and loaders of Anthony Allega. In Ohio what is happening. Are they worried about workers getting to their place of employment and back at home in reasonable time? Are they worried about timely deliveries and sales people making their calls? Well, the truth of the matter is what they’re really worried about is — baseball. That’s right. Someday, there’s going to be a revolt. And it won’t be pretty. Thank God for Gov. George Voinovich who is trying to put a stop to this madness. A Corkman arrived home late one night in a state of more than mild intoxication. “Where have you been?” asked his wife. “I don’t know,” answered the drunk, “but wherever it was it was really swanky — they even had a golden toilet.” The next morning a fellow knocked on the front door demanding compensation for his damaged saxophone. An Amish blacksmith gave the following instructions to his slow-learning apprentice: “I’ll put the red-hot iron on the anvil and when I nod my head, you hit it.” A sailor was sitting on the end of a LCI when a giant wave came along and knocked him overboard. “Help,” he shouted, as he struggled in the water, “drop me a line.” “I can’t,” hollered back his shipmate, “I don’t know your address.” Why do senior citizens make the best secret agents? Answer: Because even under torture they, can’t remember what they’ve been assigned to do. That’s all for now — thank goodness. 100 WORDS MORE OR LESS by JOHN MERCEMA “A PARISH PRIEST” THE FOLLOWING APPEARED IN THE CHURCH BULLETIN OF ST.RICHARD PARISH IN N.OLMSTED, OHIO ON 7/30/95: “IF THE PRIEST PREACHES OVER 10 MINUTES, HE’S LONG WINDED. You have - without hearing and without a trial -forced about a hundred of our townspeople from their homes and appropriated their homes.” “Oh really? That’s exactly what I wanted to know,” said Willi. On another occasion we went past the Cizmarska cooperative. Again Willi asked, “How can you have such beautiful houses and workshops here? If someone wanted to build something in our town, he had to beg for a loan from a Jew; and if you needed money to buy machinery or materials, you again had to beg a Jew, who loaned you the money only if you bought everything from him. If I could choose, I would volunteer to shoot 100 Jews a day.” “And I would like to know how could Jews choke the German people, a nation which is considered one of the hardest working, most cultural and technologically advanced in Europe? The people in Ljubljana threw out all their Jews 300 years ago, when they blamed them for a plague which killed many children. Before the war, there were only nine Jewish families in Ljubljana. But in Zagreb the longest and most beautiful street (Ilica) was all Jewish.” I argued with the Germans about many other things, while my comrades encouraged me, “Go ahead and tell them, they deserve it,” but they themselves stayed cautiously quiet. Maybe they thought, “Let him deal with them, so we won’t have to.” It was March before I wrote down some of February’s events: Sunday, February 21 From 10 to 11 p.m. we could hear machine guns firing somewhere behind Žirovski hill, probably from Poljanska valley. February 22 The trades organization in Kranj caused great concern with its order that all supplies of leather and all the workers and machinery had to be transported out of Žiri. Our members started dividing their things... February 26 At four o’clock in the morning I heard large explosions; the partisans had mined a viaduct near Fužine, but they did little damage. It carried normal traffic only a few hours later. People are not approving these kinds of terrorist activities; they can only make things worse. March 1, 1943 A special commission made up of three members of the Co-operative Federation in Kranj came to review the operations of our Shoemakers’ Co-operative and asked about rates of pay. They asked if the co-op could produce 500 pairs of shoes per month instead of the current 350. Our members stopped worrying about losing their raw materials and their production machinery. The commission didn’t even argue with the high prices. That evening the military police went on patrol alone. Those of us in the Village Guard stayed at the parish house and practiced aiming. When we did go out on patrol (with the Germans)... one of us would always go out ahead to tell the partisans to hide, so we would not meet. March 3 Mail no longer arrives on a regular basis; the trains are running late, and the bus only runs to Gorenja Vas; Tine Ovsenk drives horses from there to Žiri. It’s a good thing they didn’t look in my pockets. March 4 From eight to nine in the evening, non-stop thunder could be heard from somewhere near Cerkno. People are saying that the partisans have pushed the Italians out of Cerkno and taken over in that area. I mailed packages of food to my brother (who was in a prisoner-of-war camp), to my two brothers in Ljubljana and to people I knew in the camps. My aunt wrote from Zenica that they are experiencing unspeakable suffering. The Home’s are sending many things to relatives who had been relocated to Serbia and others in camps in Italy. March 5 The dairy worker is sick and his assistant isn’t writing anything down, so I’m working all day at the Dairy while I’m being paid to work at the Shoemaker’s Co-op. It’s good that their pay isn’t too good, otherwise they might complain. But salary isn’t important now; what’s important is staying alive. We take whatever we can from the Germans; it’s all good. We’re actually living better than the Germans now. We’re getting more fresh cream, sugar and meat than we did before the war. The best seller used to sell only 5 kilograms (about 10 pounds) of cheese per month. It doesn’t pay to save German Marks; they won’t be worth anything after the war. There are very few people who are counting on a German victory. But I can’t understand people who want to destroy the national heritage. Not long ago an old friend came to the dairy to tell me that the partisans would soon come to destroy our equipment. What equipment?... He said that we’re making butter for the Germans. I told him that the Dairy produced 500 Kilograms of butter per month before the war and tried to sell it in all the Slovenian towns, but it was too expensive everywhere. Now we get 200 to 300 kilograms per month and it all sells (locally), plus whatever is Al Koporc, Jr. Piano Technician (216) 481-1104 •O'-- produced in people’s homes. The Žiri dairy is probably the only one in the Gorenjsko region which has not sent even a drop of milk out of Žiri, and not a dekagram of butter. But my friend was not convinced. Hunger for destruction was in his bones. About a month ago, Hieronim Kogovšek disappeared. They found him today up on the hill above Nova Vas, a bullet in his head... It really is turning out the way someone predicted before the 3 war, that human heads will soon be cheaper than cabbage heads. People say that Hieronim was with the partisans, but spying for the Germans and receiving huge sums of money from them. Brandt I’m sure that every good event starts with careful planning. My mother’s cousin, Charlene Dugman, planned our family reunion. This woman has perseverance and a heart of gold, as do all the women in my mother’s family. Charlene started years ago trying to locate family in Slovenija and America. My mother, Sally Brandt (Russ), her sister Carole Vargo (Russ) and brother Raymond Russ were not “discovered” until 1989 (but that’s another story). Charlene was also instrumental in “connecting” with our relatives in Slovenija. So in the summer of 1994 my mother accompanied Charlene and her husband, Charles Dugman, John Sega, Margaret Jones, Joseph Rus, and Martha Ann Rus back to Slovenija. There they met most of their relatives and their Aunt Pavla the last remaining aunt of the 13 Rus children. There was talk then of a family reunion in America; I never guessed it would happen only one year later. So it was that on June 29, 1995, 150 of the Rus family relatives congregated at Frank Sterle’s restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio. Thirteen of our relatives from Slovenija came as our special guests. Also in attendance was U.S. astronaut Ron Sega, (John Sega’s son). Charlene opened the evening with a beautiful story about writing a letter to Slovenija and receiving a reply. Then she graciously introduced our relatives from Slovenija: The Slak family - Janez, Marinka, Mojca and Toni. Rudi Rus Jr., Majda Rus, Sasha Rus, Tanija Rus. The Milivojevic family, Nada, Dušan, Luca and Natasha, and Alenka Slak. They all stood, very proudly, as they were introduced. Then Charlene turned the microphone over to Ron Sega, who spoke about his trip to Ljubljana, and his stay at the State House there. Then Charlene read the name's of the 13 Rus children. We each stood with our families as our names were called. It was a very emotional experience, one none of us will ever forget. I cannot remember feeling so happy for my mother in all of my 34 years. After the introductions, we ate, danced and drank. I heard someone say their thighs hurt so much from dancing they couldn’t walk. The following day our family reunion continued at the home of my cousin Denise Musgrave (Vargo) and her husband Dave. My aunt, Carole Vargo (Russ) was the hostess. This, of course, was a more casual setting in Mid-dlefield. Everyone was still buzzing about the night before. We ate pizza (Dave owns a few Master Pizzas), played volleyball, the kids ran around, all while the next door neighbor played his button box. Plenty of pictures and movies were taken (my dad was born with a camera strapped to his shoulder) and most importantly, we all had a chance to pass pictures back and forth, read letters, and reminisce. This reunion was truly an opportunity of a lifetime. It was a wonderful memory we’ll all cherish forever. I only hope we’ll be able to do it again some day. As a St. Vitus School Cafeteria Coordinator for over 20 years, I had the pleasure of working with Vinko five days a week. He came in early every morning, checked the stoves and hot water to make sure they were in working order before the cooks came in. He would repair or adjust anything that was not working. He set-up the tables and chairs for the children’s lunches. Later he put them away and mopped the floor, always in a pleasant mood. I also had the pleasure of assisting him at any affair at St. Vitus, especially the dinners, again he arrived early to see that everything was in order. He was first on the scene and the last to leave. He always made sure the cafeteria was in order for the next day. He was fun to work with, never got angry, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace. Carinthia was invaded by Germanic feudal lords and that was the end of independence until now. Slovenia declared itself a nation in 1991, but European allies waited until January 1992 to recognize it, followed by the United States in April of the same year. The Slovenian landscape — touching Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea — has been a crossroads of Europe through history. The 16-year-old Mojca Setlar’s great-grandmother, Ivana Meden, 97, lived under the Austro-Hungarian emperor who sent villagers to fight his Italian and Russian enemies in World War I. In 1918, the Italians seized Senožeče and about a quarter of Slovenia, as the spoils of war. By the 1920s, the Italians, led by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, forced everyone to speak their language; whoever resisted was exiled to Italy. “We weren’t allowed to say a word in Slovenian, at least not in public,” says Mojca’s grandmother, Draga Sotlar, 70. But in the evening, by oil lamp, villagers kept their mother language alive reading poetry and plays to each other, in secret. During World War II, Mrs. Sotlar, a Roman Catholic, lived through the communist takeover. Her husband, Anton, joined the communist-led partisans fighting the Nazis and the fascists in the woods around the village. The Axis allies had attacked the area with tanks blazing, setting houses on fire and sending civilians to German concentration camps or torturing them in Italian jails and prison camps. Some villagers still carry a reminder of the camps — a number tattooed on their arm. After the war, the victorious communists formed the six republics of Yugoslavia, meaning “the land of the southern Slavs.” Images of Tito graced every public place well past his death in 1980. Now “children don’t know communism, a cause for which some of their grandparents died,” says Marija Sotlar, 80, the late Anton’s sister and a practicing Catholic. She survived a fascist camp in Italy. “People sacrificed a lot, with pride and enthusiasm,” she says. “And for some reason, we weren’t sad. Sometimes, in that camp in Italy, we even sang.” Keeping, building faith After the war, when Marija Sotlar was working at the family-owned village inn, she’d slip away to Mass on Sundays. Religion — anathema to the communist state — was never really wiped out. Anton Sotlar’s funeral in 1981 mirrored the paradox of Slovenia: A priest blessed the coffin, standing alongside a top communist official. And from the wooded hills around the church and cemetery rang gun salutes, as if from the dead man’s partisan comrades. In that cypress-shaded chapel, babies, born to parents who were forced to join the Communist Party to work, had been secretly baptized. These days, the faithful — mainly elderly women and children — enter without fear. The battered church is slowly being repaired, and steeple bells stolen by the fascists to make cannons have been replaced. Those who helped get funds to fix the church included ex-Communist Party member Rado Meden, who also had lent the priest a hand under the old regime. “People have to help one another,” he explains simply. Building faith is a thornier task. During decades of communism, “many came to church out of protest,” says the Rev. Franc Raspor, the middle-age priest of the 400-year-old parish. “Now people are free, but they also feel that nothing can touch them — not God, not the devil,” says the priest. “And there’s little community life, really. That comes from having more money, and the idea that, ‘I don’t need anyone’.” But there are anguished needs. Raspor, whose father and uncle both were partisans, has visited several former Communist Party members “who suddenly wanted to confess to God before dying.” His church is just off the main road that cuts through Senožeče, for decades a highspeed deadly thoroughfare from the Balkan countries to Western Europe. The world has indeed passed through. Now, Slovenians no longer need to learn German, Italian and Serbo-Croatian — once the majority Yugoslav language — to understand their leaders. Here and there, in some unkempt office, restaurant or shop, a proud-looking, dusty Tito still peers from a wall. And nobody cares. From a sunny hilltop, one can see across the lush forests to Italy. The open Western horizon beckons, awakening desires and growing doubts. “You can see the insecurity in people. They’re less happy,” says the Rev. Raspor. “But they don’t consider that finally, this is the price we have to pay for democracy.” Visitors Charlie Zgonc of Euclid, Ohio, a former American Home delivery person (paper boy), 65 years ago, stopped in the office to visit along with his pal John Telich. The two had just come from a most enjoyable lunch of frog legs at Patty K’s Restaurant in the Slovenian National Home. As long as your surgeon enjoys the music, you’re probably in good hands. Karen Allen and Jim Blascovich, at the State University of New York at Buffalo, found when they studied 50 male surgeons, aged 31 to 61, who enjoyed listening to music during surgery. They gave the surgeons a series of mental arithmetic tests while monitoring certain cardiovascular measures, such as blood pressure, puls? rate, and “sweaty palms.” The surgeons counted backwards by 13s for two minutes, rested for five, then counted backward a-ain by 17s. They repeated this procedure twice, using different numbers. One session was conducted in silence, the other two with music chosen either by the doctors — mostly classical and jazz but also some Irish drums and tin whistles. The surgeons were less stressed and performed the calculations with greater accuracy and speed while listening to their own selection. They performed the worst when no mus c played. “Music focj-es tneir attention so they’re less likely to get distracted, rays Blascovich. “And picking he music gives them control.” C tholic Radio A new Catholic radio station, WMIH-AM 1260 offers programming to the Greater Clevela id area with music, talk shows, Mass commentary, sports and local news to the Cleveland Catholic community. In zdaj pozdrav še Pavli, pevki zvesti, le dobri BOG zapisal bo obresti, vsa dobra dela in težino dneva — nebeški žegen toplo naj ogreva. Vsi križi Tvoji — kakor v prvi zgodbi so prepleteni s trnjem, vsi podobni, le moč molitve v srce nosi srečo — ko v drag spomin na Nje prižigaš svečo. Ostanita še dolgo v naši družbi, v veselje nam in BOGU zvesti službi, naj sonce Vam zlati življenjska pota — naj se ne žabi Vojnih src DOBROTA. 6. avgust 1995 To nedeljo na Slovenski pristavi bo Klub upokojencev SP počastil go. Osnovni podatki predstavljenih osebnosti uglednih slovenskih Amerikancev so nanizani v sledečih kategorijskih oznakah: Priimek in ime; Rojstni podatki; Izobrazba: osnovna, višja, strokovna, podiplomska specializacija; Career Highlights: poklicni profil posameznika, poklicna uveljavitev v Ameriki, znansvetno in umetniško delovanje, publikacije; Biographical References; Naslovi: poštni, številke telefona in telefaksa, in E-Mail elektronske pošte. »Preliminarna izdaja« knjige je prvič izšla 1992, njena redna »Predelana in popravljena izdaja« prinaša že skoro dvakrat večje število biografij pomembnejših slovenskih Amerikancev (v 1992 s 193-mi, v 1995 s 375-mi imeni in s seznamom petih uglednih slovenskih Amerikancev, preminulih v zadnjih treh letih). Danes, ko spet pišem in s tem opravljam dolžnost prostovoljnega kroničarja sv. Cirila na Osmi, ni nič boljše. Se huje je! Višja vročina in močnejša vlažnost. In vprav ta naša zdajšnja razpršenost faranov sv. 11) Intervjuvanka o svojem intervjuju CHICAGO, 111. In s tem sama soglašam. Corinne Leskovar rijateTs Pharmacy 4. Ta bo v soboto, 26. avgusta, v cerkveni dvorani sv. Križa. Vabimo takoj vse in skušajmo organizirati našo srenjo in faro. Srečno in veselo naprej! Vse podrobnosti v zvezi z njim bodo objavljene v kratkem v MSIP, ki jih piše duhovni vodja MZA Rev. Vol-bang. Piknik je zelo lepo uspel. V juliju je rojakinja Dari Strmšek srečno prestala nevarno srčno operacijo. Zdaj okreva v domači oskrbi. Bolni Dari želimo dobrega in hitrega okrevanja. Dr. Rudolph M. Susel Štiriletno gradnjo Slovenskega kulturnega središča v Lemontu bomo 18. in 19. novembra letos kronali s slovesnim odprtjem, ob katerem bomo poskušali izbrati najboljšo glasbo, največje talente, najžlahtnejšo zabavo in najlepšo umetnost ameriške Slovenije. Ponosni smo nanje in veselimo se dneva, ko bo stavba začela služiti svojemu namenu,« dodaja g. Martin. Inšpektorji, ki v imenu države in okraja nadzorujejo gradnjo, so presenečeni, s kakšno natančnjostjo, marljivostjo in strokovnostjo so dela opravljena. Zunanja oblika je klasična in se lepo prilagaja okolju. Notranja ureditev daje prostorom praktičnost in prijetnost. Hribček z lurško votlino, miniaturo blejskega jezera, dolino rožnega venca in prostorom za piknike privablja v slovenski Lemont s svojo prikupnostjo in prijaznostjo. »Okolica in njena lepota daje slovenskemu Lemontu svojo privlačnost in čar,« pravi g. Hozjan. Slovensko kulturno središče oznanja svoja velika dneva: 18. in 19. november 1995. Žrtvujte, kar morete in pomagajte nam graditi našo prihodnost in prihodnost slovenstva v Ameriki; in pridite na naše »Praznovanje edinosti« 18. in 19. novembra letos. To delo opravlja z največjim veseljem. Klainsek, g. Konopek in g. Mario Medved daroval »Thermal Glass for Cooler«. MALI OGLASI Gateway Health Care Center is looking for dependable persons to join our housekeeping and laundry staff. Ljubljana — Veliko Slovencev doma in v tujini pozna dr. OBLETNICE SMRTI i očeta in starega očeta LUKA KUHAR Umrl 6. avgusta 1981.
