Class "Bee” member will give the worker one full point and one dollar

Class “Aye” member will be wrorth one half point and one half dollar in cash

IIOW THE TRANSFER MEMBER CAN EARN POINTS
A member transferring to a higher class will earn the same points as a new member. From Class AYE to BEE, is one point — from Class Jr. to AYE is one point. Cash awards will be counted as well, on the same basis for the amount of the higher class.

Here is a wonderful proposition for every branch, decided by the Board of Directors at their last meeting, to help cover the convention expenses which your branch will incur. It is for a:
CONVENTION EXPENSE GIVE-AWAY
that will give you FULL PROCEEDS for your branch treasury!
This is the way the plan is outlined:
S.W.U. is donating a total of $500 in prize money and will	supply as many tickets
as your branch wishes. First	prize will be $300	with two prizes at	$100	each!
Branches will be busy and start selling tickets at $'1.00 each and the FULL TICKET RETURNS will belong to your branch!
This means that if you	get energetic and	go into this	selling	in a	big way,
your	branch can make a nice	sum of money!
The Convention expenses that are to be the responsibility of each branch send-ing a delegate(s) is her (their) daily expense money. It would be reasonable and practical to allow $100 per delegate for their expenses. The S.W.U. pays her (their) fare to and from the Convention City.
In addition to the delegates’ expenses, branches are planing group excursions to Washington by bus or train and many think this will be a wonderful opportunity to gain funds for transportation — to help the members’ costs.

Supreme President’s Message
40th ANNIVERSARY OF BRANCH NO. 1
Early Saturday morning, September 10th, my chauffer-husband and I left Cleveland for Sheboygan, Wis. The day was beautiful and it was a pleasure to drive on the Ohio Turnpike; making good time until we reached the heart of Chicago, when two lanes were being repaired on a bridge and we had to move along bumper to bumper. It took us over an hour to get out of the traffic jam. We finally arrived in Milwaukee, Wis., at 2 p. m. and stopped to see our friend, Christina Kolar. We planned to visit her for a short time, but Christina insisted we stay for dinner. She also invited one of my school chums and neighbors from Minnesota, Mary Cvar who is a member of Zveza, too. Our stay in Milwaukee was longer than we had planned so we didn’t arrive in Sheboygan, until 7 p. m. There we stopped in to visit with Mr. and Mrs. John Prisland and had a nice time. Mrs. Prisland prepared a lovely repast for us. Overnight lodging was reserved for us at the Motor Inn where we had a good rest after the long journey.
The next day was Wisconsin State Day and the convention was held at the church hall with State President Rose Kraemer presiding. It was very well-attended. Milwaukee was represented with appprox-imately 75 members, a very good showing. Recommendations were brought up for discussion that were for the good of the members and Zveza.
We all attended the Holy Mass which was held at 11:30 a. m. celebrated by Father James J. Schlaffer. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious banquet. The hall was filled to capacity and the speaking part of the program was short. Chairlady for the grand occasion was Mrs. Marie Prisland who did a marvelous job.
Branches of the State of Wisconsin presented 40 red carnations to the Founder, Mrs. Marie Prisland, in recognition of her 40 years as their organizer and leader. Also, the First Lady received a beautiful large oil painting of her portrait from the branch officers and members of Sheboygan. The program was climaxed with the appearance of soloist Maria Kranjc Fischinger who rendered a number of classical and Slovenian folk songs accompanied by Mary Marcus at the piano.
At this time I wish to thank Christine Kolar for her hospitality during our short visit in Milwaukee and to Br. 1, Sheboygan and especially to Mr. and Mrs. Prisland for making our stay there very enjoyable.

Sunday, Sept 18th, the Marie Prisland Cadets joined the procession honoring the Most Rev. Josef Pogačnik, Archbishop of Ljubljana who was a guest at St. Vitus parish. The girls made a very nice and colorful appearance between the Slovenian costumes.

“Reminder!” Have you enrolled your friend into our Zveza? Hurry and get her in now, as the deadline is only two months away and the grand awards that will be given in prizes are really worth working toward. The top worker that enrolls the most members will be honored at the Convention or if not present, at her branch. It is well worth working for the cash and grand award!
The Convention Expense Give Away Is now in effect! Branches have received their tickets by mail and letter explaining all the details. Branches, get busy and sell the tickets! You will keep the money at your branch! Mail the ticket stubs to Mary Bostian, State President of OhioMich. Many branches have written for more tickets and they are available in any number by contacting Mrs. Bostian at 19G17 Mohawk Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44119. I hope the officers who have been inactive will try to get your tickets sold and do something for your branch. If other branches can do it, why can’t you?
Nov. 24th is Thanksgiving Day. On this day we give our thanks for the health and abundance that we have cherished the past year. Have a nice Thanksgiving!
Happy Birthday to our Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak and we are wishing her many more happy and healthy years. Same goes to all who are celebrating their birthdays this month.
Orders are coming in fast for the cookbooks, Women’s Glory—The Kitchen. Secretaries, do not wait until the last minute before the holidays but order your supply now and have them on hand. This is the season when women are interested in baking and cooking more.
No. 14, Euclid, Ohio.—Our October meeting was buzzing with excitement. Such bright smiles, and happy faces were present, and for a good reason too, our card party was a great success, beyond all expectations. The committee did a wonderful job soliciting gifts for door and raffle prizes. It took almost an hour to give away the prize's to the lucky winners. We are grateful to all our members who donated gifts and grocery items for our “grocery” basket.
Our chairman (and our president) Theresa Skur, cooked the delicious roast beef for the sandwiches served at the card party. The committee members were:	Chairman,	Theresa
Skur, Mary Fakult, Frances Globokar, Pauline Krall, Mary Iskra, Josephine Centa, Rose Mickovic, Antonia Šuštar, Jennie Vidovich, Vera Bajec, Mary Stražišar (Arrowhead), and Antoinette Zabukovec.
A special note of thanks to the husbands of our members who helped set-up and take down the card tables that Sunday. To all the ladies who helped in the kitchen, and Mr. Centa and Tillie Spehar, who tended the bar that Sunday, a swell job done, thank you.
The “Twirlettes” (Juniors) Baton Twlrlers helped with serving the refreshments and distributing the prizes to the winners. The mothers of the “Twirlettes” and some of our members, too, made baked goods and other goodies for the Bake Sale the baton group held at our card party.
Our deepest sympathies to Mary Verliovsek on the loss of her mother. Our condolences to the family of Rose Schmidt, on the loss of husband and father. A quick recovery is hoped for all our sick members.

San Francisco Carries on Traditional Zveza Day

As president of our branch,
I	want to sincerely thank all members who made our 40th anniversary a success.
Especially to Ann Modez and , her helpers for soliciting the ads, and Mrs. Prisland for being an excellent toastmistress and for arranging the program book and writing the history of our branch.
Many thanks to Dorothy Kregel for the flower arrangements and Sylvia Drexler, ticket chairman, Mary Germ for making the delicious dinner and all her helpers. Also Antoinette Brulla for baking the potica.

spent a short time at home from Washington, D. C. Then she hurried back to prepare for her fall school schedule and to make plans for the next Zveza convention In Washington. Since she was the organizer of Br. 103, and Is its president, much of the activities in Washington are in her possession As she is a very capable young girl with an abundance of experience we are positive she will master her arrangements. So, good luck, Irene!
Congratulations to Mrs. Skubic from Coal City, who was the oldest citizen in the Home-coming celebration. She is our member and we are glad to see her come to the meeting at various times.
Our treasurer, Jo Sumic, gave an extensive report of the new fall season of bowling this year at Rivals and invited the members to come on Mondays at 7 p. m. and give them a boost. The local Herald News also carried a large report on the bowling page on our bowling teams, and related its Is the ‘‘oldest league” bowling at Rivals, almost 31 years. It gave the history of the teams and the history of the branch. It also carried the picture of the first bowlers and other active members of the team. Congratulations to Jo Sumic, and the first bowling team just 31 years ago. It is an event worthwhile to remember.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Muster have become grandparents to a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hoobler. Mrs. Hoobler, Joanne, is the daughter of the Musters and we extend our congratulations to grandparents and parents of the little princess. Jose-
No. 13, San Francisco, Calif. Zveza Day is now but a happy memory, but it is with great pleasure I report of a really successful day both financially and morally. We had over 60 people for our breakfast cooked by our wonderful friend and helper, Matt Batko, who prepared ham, eggs, potatoes, sweet rolls and coffee. Matt is a most efficient cook and the food was delicious. He works with such system that, all the help required for this big undertaking was Matt and yours truly in the kitchen. The food was excellent and the day a very happy one.
Mrs. Antoinette Donat and family, Mrs. Arlene Podgoršek and family added to the pleasure of the day. State President Rose Scoff introduced the charter members who are still with us to this day. Mary Slanec (past President) Mary Rauh and last but not least, Kate Radovich. Each of the charter members was presented with a lovely red rose corsage donated by Chairman of the Day, Ruth Zwyssig.
Ruth did an excellent job with the decorations and she donated all the flowers on the tables. Rose Scoff’s daughter, RoseMarie donated all the sweet rolls which I’m sure you enjoyed. The committee, although small, was most efficient. Kitchen help dishwasher: Me; dishdryers and cleanup: Mary Plut, Poldica Podgornik, Margaret Fager and Ann Stich; decorating: Ruth Zwyssig, Kate Plut, Rose Scoff, Margaret Fager, and Katie Lampe.
Agnes I^ampe entertained us with many Accordion Selections and old time songs were sung by all. Days like this make membership a real pleasure. Let’s have more days like this. All the members donated gifts which were used to add to the Treasury. Success was ours so all we can say is thanks to you one and all!

phine Muster, our treasurer, is a very happy grandma!
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Terlep from Oakland Ave., who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. In church there was a large attendance and at home, an “Open House” with their many friends. They have one son and three married daughters, Mrs. Terlep was the treasurer of Br. 20 for many years and at present is an officer of other societies.
Also we congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Mike Papesli on their 43rd Wedding Anniversary. They have a son and daughter who helped them celebrate quietly at home.

Nancy were blessed with a little boy, John Gerald named for Grandpa and Daddy. Happiness to you all . . .
Sophie Sullivan attended breakfast with her children,grandchildren and great-grandchild. Imagine, four generations, and Sophie has her mom, so there are actually 5 generations In all! Seems strange as Sophie looks too young to be grandma let alone great grandma! Nice going, gals!
Katie Govednick lost her husband, Martin after a long and painful illness. It is so hard to adjust to a loss, these two were inseparable and we know how hard it is on Katie as she is one of our friends. God bless you at this time Katie . . .
Helen Butala lost her husband, Pete. He too had been ill a long time. Of course, It makes the loss greater for the family to bear as when ill the person demands so much care it is hard to allot time when they are not around any more. This lovely family has been friends of ours since childhood and their generosity to my Mother during her illiness will always be remembered by me. May your loss be made easier to bear knowing you did all that was humanly possible, Helen.
Happily we report Ann Stark is well enough on the road to recovery; she is up and around again. Ann has had had her bout with illness which has been long and painful, but to see her smiling face and enjoy her sweet company is a real thrill. Nice to have you looking so good, Ann.
Come on ladies, attend your meetings and keep abreast of the affairs planned for you. If you missed the breakfast you can be assured you missed a wonderful time; so, be with us in the future and enjoy more happy times.
Thank God for each new day, and use it to the fullest, thus your life will have full meaning.

WHAT IS GREATNESS?
A noted Frenchman asked a class, “What is greatness?” And before any one could answer, he gave his own answer — “It is a thought in youth carried out in ripened years.”
It is the answer given in the fable of the mushroom and the acorn. Under the great oak tree, an acorn was sprouting. Beside it a mushroom had sprung up. Said the mushroom, "Why are you so slow? You have spent a week in growing one little leaf.” The acorn replied: “I am slow because of what I intend to become. In two centuries, I will be a spendid oak tree.” The sun came out, and in the sultry heat, the little mushroom wilted and turned black, but the acorn grew for two hundred years in beauty and usefulness to the world.
St. John once wrote, “Rejoice, o young man, in thy youth.” He wrote because he knew that youth is the borning time of greatness.
Parents, teachers, pastors, friends: all help to plant the thought of real greatness in the minds of children.
This brings us up squarely to the vast importance of early home training. Benjamin West, the first American painter to gain appreciation in Europe, traced his burning ambition to a word of appreciation by his mother, after he had drawn a little sketch with charcoal upon the
end of a large stick of stovewood. She stooped to kiss him, and commended his work. He never forgot it.
Fathers and mothers often wear out their lives trying to feed, clothe and automobile their children, too often with little attempt to "enter into the dreams of their children, or to train them in the Biblical ideas of honesty and character.
The child’s mind is like a seed bed into which thoughts and ideals are sown. First and most lasting are these impressions and early thoughts.
If we work in wood, stone, and metal, our work will be as lasting as those materials. If we work with the growing thoughts of children and youth, if we center their thoughts on industry, honor, and goodness, our work will be as lasting as eternity.
In the garden this fall, the plants are now maturing the seed by which they will perpetuate their kind through other summers. Such is the main task of home, school and Church — to give children serious thoughts, thoughts which they themselves will cause to ripen in their ma-turer years.
To feed, clothe, and educate our children is important. To feed their minds and inspire their ambitions to follow the One Great Teacher is all important.
No. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. — At our
last meeting, held Sept. 5th, plans were made for the Christmas party to take place on Sunday, Dec. 4th at 2 p. m. in the West Park Slovenian Hall. Please bring a $1 gift exchange; cookies and door prizes will be welcomed by the committee.
We are most happy to welcome to our branch three new juvenile members, Judith Garapic, Lisa Chesnik, Deborah Dancull. Congratulations to Marie Hosta and Julia Chesnik who became proud grandmothers for the first itme to granddaughter Lisa Marie — all our members, too.
Sunshine News! Marie Hosta is at home after a stay at St. John’s Hospital; also Frances Miklich was at St. John’s on observation. Get well wishes were sent to Josephine Zupan and we wish them all a speedy recovery.
Sorry to hear about Mary Vehar’s husband, who has been in the hospital for sometime; and to Anne Klun’s husband. Get well soon, Joe and Tony!

meetings resumed in September a-gain after several months of vacation. Our meetings are held in the St. Anthony Parish Hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p. m.
Pres. Hose Novak opened the meeting with prayers. The Minutes and treasurer’s report were read and accepted. A pasty supper was served by the women of the Catholic Forresters before the meeting.
Get well cards were sent to our sick members who are in the hospital.
Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. A-melia Mainer and Mrs. Barbara Brennan and other members of the Baldin families on the loss of their dear sister, Marie, who passed away on Sept. 7th in a local hospital after a lingering illness.
After the meeting, Mrs. Mary Ba-char took home the door prize.
To all members who are having birthdays this month, we wish you many happy returns of the day. The next meeting at this writing is in October and it was planned as our annual Halloween Party. The Lunch Committee was in charge. We’ll report on this fun filled night next month.

We have three new members. The first is Jennifer Marie Widina, granddaughter of Agnes Widina and great granddaughter of Magdalina and Mary Veselic. Carol Ann Gould, daughter of one of our very loyal members, Frances Gould, also joined as well as Ann Cesnik, the daughter-in-law of one of our charter members, Johanna Cesnik. We welcome these new members. It’s certainly nice to have you in our organization.
Condolences are extended to the Flajnik and Ferlan families on the loss of their father, John, who died suddenly on August 26th. Also, the Trempus family lost their son, Frank, Jr., who died on August 29th and they have our sympathy. May the souls of these departed rest in peace.

No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. Here are the minutes from our October meeting. The attendance was good as each one tries her best to come to the Anniversary and Birthday party after the meeting. We didn’t have too much to discusss, but it was good to see you returning home from your vacations. It was a long recess from meetings, too.

Aline Cooke is doing very well with junior members. She has 66 juniors which means they must like her work and that of her two lovely (laughters who help her. I don’t know how they do it! We are proud of Ann and the girls for their patience in teaching the juniors and hope they will continue for a long time to come.
We had a good lunch right after our meeting. Goodies came from Mary Drenick, a baked apricot roll; Frances Perme brought liquid refreshments and Anna Tekavec baked walnut potica. Theresia Potokar brought ham sandwiches, pickles and cookies. We thank all of you and to Annie Chinchar, who helped serve, too.
To our treasury, Agnes Jazbec gave $1., also Mary Stmad $1.50, Frances Kocencich $2 'and Frances Sokach $1.
We heard that Mr. & Mrs. Barlto-vich will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Nov. 6th. They have two daughters. We congratulate them and their daughters. Mrs. Angela Barkovich is a long-time member and a good one, too. May the Lord bless them on their Golden Jubilee.
Celebrating their 25th Anniversary were our secretary, Josephine Co-menshek and her husband, Albert. It was on August 31st. Congratulations and may you live to your 50th! Get well wishes to A1 Comenshek recuperating from an eye operation. We hope and pray he mends quickly. May God be with you. Their son, Hob is in Saigon.
Leaving for Vietnam this past month was John Tekavec, son of Mr. & Mrs. Matt Tekavec. The son of Annie Chinchar is home now on a 20 day leave from the Navy after which he goes to Guam. Good luck to our sons and may the Lord guide and protect them from harm. May they come back safely to their families.
Mr. & Mrs. Louis Perme are the grandparents once again of a grandson born to Mr. & Mrs. Ray Perme. Congratulations to both sides of the family. Louis Perme’s are now grandparents for the 10th time.
We thank our pastor, Rev. Fr. J. Celesnik for the Slovenian Mission given by Father Athanasius of Le-niont, 111. The Slovenian pepole are very grateful for it and will not forget the beautiful sermons and the singing that remains in our ears.
Mrs. Slcrobat is ill in the hospital. We pray that she gets better and may God bless her and all the shut-ins. A reminder to those who reach the age of 75 years to tell our sec-cretary. From then on you will pay only 25c per month.
July was a sad month for us. Peter Sokach, the band leader, died suddenly. He was the son of our member, Frances Sokach and brother of
A life-long resident of the South Chicago community, Mrs. Mary Kompare passed away Friday Oct. 7, 1966 after a short illness. Mrs. Kompare was the widow of William F. Kompare,, an Assistant State’s Attorney at the time of Ills death in 1959. Mary was an officer of most of the organizations she belonged to and was an ardent worker in all of them, as well as for her Church and community.
She was a member of Br. 16 for many years, and beloved by all. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Soltysinski, sisters and two grandchildren. Her sisters-in-law include Mrs. Ann Kompare and Mrs. Pauline Klobucliar, both S.W.U. members.
Her funeral was attended by hundreds of friends and neighbors and many came to pray and express their sympathy in person and attended the funeral.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved and pray that her reward in heaven may be everlasting.

No. 33, Duluth, Mnin. — Our annual fall dinner at the October meeting was again a huge success; 120 members were present. The “steak” dinner served was the work of the committee headed by Deloris Dincau. The ladies worked hard, but it was also a great deal of fun in preparing the meal.
Following the dinner, Katherine Merhar of Ely, who was visiting at the home of her sister and our president, Frances Blatnick, brought out her accordian and played. The En-gish and Slovenian songs really gave our vocal chords a work out! Thanks, Kate: it was very nice of you to entertain us! Everyone enjoyed herself.
It was a great pleasure to enroll 16> adult members and 6 juveniles in our branch at this meeting. Congratulations, girls! We know you will enjoy our activities and the members. We are most happy to have you all in our midst. The members are to be congratulated on their diligence in signing up new members. Keep up the good work!
Washington, here we come! About 20 members have already signed up
to make the excursion trip to the National Convention next May. We are awaiting word on the transportation rates. Projects are being planned for all visitors so even if ymi are not a delegate, plan on coming along for the sightseeing! Ticket selling is now in full force for the $500 give-away. The S. W. U. is supplying the prizes and if we all work hard we can make some money for our branch’s convention expenses.
On Sept. 12th we were shocked with sad news, the deaths of two of our wonderful members at St. Mary’s Hospital, both passing away on the same day: Mrs. Amelia Braye and Mrs. Rose Collard. Even though they were ill for some time, not ever did we hear them complain and they faithfully attend our meetings, and were co-operative in all respects.

2	sons, a daughter and 4 grandchildren and Mrs. Rose Collard is grieved by her husband, Jerome, 6 children and one grandchild. Both funerals were very well-attended by the members. Six honorary pallbearers accompanied each to their last rites. Let’s remember them in our prayers. They will be sadly missed by all. May their souls rest in peace. Our condolences to both families in their great losses.

We are sorry to hear of the illness of Mrs. Mary Lenich of Eveletli whom I succeeded as Supreme Auditor. She is truly a devoted and hard working officer for our organization. We all love her and hope that God will grant her good health again soon. Mrs. Lenich is confined to the Eveleth Hospital since Sept. 9th and will remain there for sometime yet. Ann Podgoršek, Rep.

SLOVENIAN WOMEN FIRST IN JOLIET BOWLING

Were you to watch the Slovenian Women’s Union bowling league in action any Monday, 6:45 p. m., at Rivals Bowl, it would seem normal enough in pin-felling and fun, but it claims several unique and unmatched distinctions.
Not only is it the only local league all of one nationality, but it is the “oldest” circuit in town!
And its founder, Josephine Sumic is still competing along with charter members, Helen Golobic and Ann Papesh. — Ann Savol, another original member, will soon return to the league's pin play, reported her sister, Mrs. Sumic.
Jo, telling how they started 30 years ago on Rivals’ original four lanes, said at first two teams bowled in the afternoon and two in the evening. “Then we all joined to meet at our still-present Monday time and wore out two houses doing it! (replacement and disastrous fire)” joshed Jo.
She was league president for 17 years (“I deliberately missed a meeting to pass on the job”), is vice-president now, and proudly bears the title of president of the Slovenian Women’s Midwest Bowling Association, covering approximately eight central states, meeting in annual competition.
With the “Swoo’s” unparalleled history in mind, it seems more unusual that it’s not Mrs. John Bluth, 25-year member who capably serves as league secretary, but her young daughter Mary Lou — also scribe for
the KSKJ Women, kegleg Wednesdays at Rivals. Mary Lou’s dad and mom are also KSKJ ten-pinners.
She relays that Dames Funeral Hoane, 8-1 record rolled right off to an early lead, not only holding high series of 2154,, but two games ahead of my team, Bluth’s Sausage!” Third is Merichka’s Tavern, 5-4, Shep’s DX tied with American Slovenian Home at 3-6, with Northwest Recreation Club last at 2-7. Monday Shep’s 753 game shoved out Bluth’s leading 752 too.
Ag Verbiscer’s 200 single leads in season accomplishment, with Mary Wajchert of New Lennox taking over second on her Monday 193, and Betty Lakotich next at 190. Mrs. Wajchert’s top 493 of Monday didn’t quite reach the top three — Mrs. Verbiscer’s 536, Lakotich 497 and Therese Pavnica’s 496. Best averages are the Verbiscer 160, Wajchert 154 and Lil Anderson’s 152.
Other league officers are Helen Golobic, president; Bernie Suski, treasurer; Mrs. Anderson, sgt.-at-arms and Mrs. Pavnica, reporter for radio, newspaper and to "Zarja” (The Dawn), SWU national magazine, published in two languages. Seasonal features are a Christmas party, award banquet, Halloween costume party, ("we somehow bowl in our outfits too!”) and Valentine hanky exchange (takes a strike).
Mrs. Sumic is a “walking history” of area bowling and of the SWU. Her six Ramuta. brothers were all former pinsetters and long competed together. "I remember them as a feature of Jahneke Lanes’ grand open-
ing,” recalled Jo. Her first tenpin knowledge began when restaurateur Mike Papesh took the neighborhood kids Sunday morning to bowl at the former Alamo (formerly above Neis-ner’s site) and at the Hub (above Harvey’s and Bernard’s), both destroyed by fire.
Last April the SWU Midwest championships were held at Rivals won by Oglesby, 111., and come to Joliet every six years. The second annual SWU tourney was held on the old Rivals’ four lanes, when the league organized in 1936, said Jo.
The Slovenian Union of America was organized with 36 members, Dec. 19, 1926 at Sheboygan, Wis. Local Branch 20 began on June 1, 1928. The “Supreme” office was located here for 15 years, 1937-52, Mrs. Josephine Erjavec serving 22 years as a national supreme officer, including 13 years as supreme secretary. She is living, along with four other Branch 20 charter members:	Mes-
dames Mary Kunstek, Josephine Zelko, Anna Bluth and Mary Russ.
Current officers are: Mrs. Emma Planinšek, president; Mrs. Josephine Muster, vice president; Miss Frances Gaspich, secretary; Mrs. Sumic, treasurer; Miss Mary Lesnik, Miss Ann Stefanich, Miss Jenny Sprengle, auditors; Mrs. Theresa Muhich, sgt.-at-arms.
The purpose, enthusiast Sumic informs, is to unite the women of Slovenian descent of the U. S., to assist in the social, moral and intellectual education, to foster the American and Slovenian ideals, to encourage participation in American civic affairs and to help members to seek affiliation with international bodies of women, to arrange for adequate internment for its deceased members.
Among its other accomplishments, besides the re-“mark”-able tenpin group, are sponsorship of singing, folk dancing, music, art, home economics, Red Cross, Mothers’ Day programs, Girl Scouts, war vets, building funds for education, drill teams (Joliet — two national championships), juvenile and sports divisions, travel, scholarships and not least, a striking cookbook that includes 600 recipes and has sold in
24,000	volumes since 1951!
PILGRIM’S ‘PRIDE’
PROUD THE ‘PILGRIM’ that fetes her family this Thanksgiving Day with this brilliant colored, home decorated delight. Take your favorite basic cake and frost it all over with your own white, butter-cream frosting. To decorate take a toothpick and lightly sketch into the frosting the outline of the fruit, leaves and fruit basket. If you make a mistake smooth the frosting with your spatula and try again. When your outline is just right, take a tube of blue Cake-Mate decorating gel in a tube and follow toothpick sketched lines for the overall outline. The fruit basket is then filled in with yellow Cake-Mate icing in a tube, using the interchangable plastic star decorating tip to create the basket weave effect. Attain this by
putting in vertical lines first with a line’s space between each one; then squeeze off horizontal lines all across the basket and crossing over the top of the vertical icing lines. The Autumn leaves are filled with combinations of green, red and yellow Cake-Mate gel in tubes to a-chieve Nature's brilliant hues. The pears, apples, cherries and grapes call for use of yellow, red, blue white and green Cake-Mate gels in tubes to give realistic coloring. Grapes, for example, call for a blending of blue and red gels . . . apples, red gel with yellow gel blended in. ILLINOIS KEGLERS START NEW SEASON

The pins are falling again on Tuesday nights at Townhall Bowling Lanes. Where did that summer go? The 1966-67 Chicago S. W. U. bowling season is well under way and it looks like another interesting one.
As of October 4th, Marquette Service station led the 10-team league with 10 wins and 5 losses. Three teams were tied for second place with 91/& wins and 5y2 losses: Reliance Federal; John F. Cuneo; and Dlue Arrow-Douglas, Inc. Dr. Grill was close behind with a record of 9-6. The other teams are Zefran Funeral home, St. Paul Federal, Barbara’s Beauty shop, Wagner’s bakery and Zarja.
High scorers for the first month of bowling were: high team game— Blue Arrow-Douglas, Inc., 960; high team series—Reliance, 2735; high individual game—M. Buikema, 240; high individual series—G. Schiffler, 654.
Individual averages ranged from 84 to 163. Admittedly, we can’t all be at the top, but some of us get a chance at our moment of glory when we bowl ’way over average. During the season I hope to bring you some news about these momentous occasions. This will allow more girls to see their names in print. So—let’s bowl!

We opened our bowling season on Monday, Sept 12th at Rivals Lanes. This year we have six teams. After three weeks of bowling, the standings are: first place with 8 wins and
1 loss is Dames Funeral Home. The members of this team are Agnes Ver-biscer, Mary Rezick, Ann Papesh, Therese Pavnica and Captain, Marilyn Nemanich.
In second place with a total of 6 wins and 3 losses are the members of Bluth’s Sausage. They are Lil Anderson, Mary Lou Bluth, Virginia Guertin, Betty Lackotich and Captain, Mary Gasperich. In third place with a total of 5 and 4 is Merichka’s Restaurant. The team members are Helen Golobic, Ann Ariagno, Theresa Papesh, Fran McCarthy, and Captain, Jo Mlakar.

We have one 200 game bowler, Agnes Verbiscer who did it on the first night of howling! Other high games are Marje Wajchert with 193 and 189; Betty Lakotich with 190, Vicki Bern-ickas with 188 and Lil Anderson with a 187 score.
Barb Terlep picked up the 4-5 split; Betty Lakotich had luck with the 5-10 and 5-7 and Ann Papesh picked up the 5-6-10.
The second night of bowling was “gutter ball” night for Bluth’s and Shep’s — or so it seemed. There were 8 gutter balls thrown in this series!
We want to congratulate our bowler, Vicki Bernikas and her husband Vic on their Silver Wedding Anniversary which they celebrated on Aug. 24th We would also like to congratulate Marilyn Nemanich and her husband, Norman, on their 7th wedding anniversary which was on Sept. 19th. No. 34, Soudan, Minn. — Branch No. 34 members met for their first meeting following the summer recess oil Wednesday evening Sept. 21 and I was far away—in Milwaukee. My husband and I, together with my sister Rose Nemanich and our mutual friend, Irene Stein, the latter two from Nopeming, Minn, had a wonderful 2 weeks vacation touring through North and South Dakota, visiting the Badlands (just beautiful) and Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and Mt. Rushmore which was so awe-inspiring and visited the site of the Passion Play in Spearfish, So. Dak., where performances ended on Sept. 5 and we got there on Sept. 15. But we went to the amphitheatre, just to see where the performances take place, and God willing, will take a trip sometime just to attend the performance.
Our trip took us through the Black Hills and to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S. Dak. and on to Pipestone, Minn, where we visited the National
Park and then to St. Paul and Minneapolis, where we visited with our son, Anthony and family and our daughter, Barbara. Then we traveled on to Milwaukee to visit Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yapel, such gracious hosts, and then to the Veterans Hospital in Downey, 111. to visit a-nother brother of my husband, who is a patient there. We were homeward bound on Thursday Sept. 2I4 and stopped to visit a friend at St. Ann’s Home, Antonia Fortun, a former Towerite, and then to St. Mary’s hospital to visit a former Soudanite, my godmother, Mrs. Barbara Schweiger who has been a patient there since February and is paralyzed—she is a member of our Branch No. 34—seeing someone so dear and active, now unable to speak or do anything for herself is heartrending.
Our next stop was at the home of our son, George in Virginia, Minn., and finally-home-which we reached on Friday morning, truly a wonderful trip. I can recommend the scenic beauty and perfect highways of all the States we were in—and at this time of the year 1 believe that Nature puts on her finest “show.”
The meeting held on the 21st was well attended, I was told, and Mrs. John Zavodnick, who attended the Minnesota SWU Day held in Crosby, Minnesota on Sept. 11th gave a report on the proceedings and announced that our Branch No. 34 was chosen to play host to the membership at Tower-Soudan in September 1967— and we hope that with our small membership can meet the challenge, for a successful Minnesota Day here!
Mrs. Mary Pahula announced that the vacuum packed candy will arrive shortly and will be placed on sale by the members as our money making project for the year. The candy will be distributed to the members at the next meeting.
A social hour follwed the business meeting and prizes at “500” went to Mmes. Ramon Berg, Louis Chiabotti and Nick Tekautz and in Scrabble to Mrs. Leo Wilson. Mrs. Emest Must-onen was awarded the attendance prize which was donated by Mrs. Mary Pahula. The evening was concluded with refreshments served by the hostesses, Mmes. William Lilya and Joseph Jamnick. Hostesses for the October meeting were Mmes. William Vollendorf and Joseph Stefa-nich, and Mrs. Frank Planton donated the door prize.
At this writing our trees are in gorgeous autumn colors and the sun is shining brightly with temperatures in the high 50’s—and when this gets to print, it will be time to say Happy Thanksgiving Day to all!

AN AMERICAN TRIBUTE TO MARY
(Another installment in our continuing story on Washington, D. C. by Miss Irene Planinšek. Visitors to the 14th National Convention in the Nation's Capitol this coming May will especially enjoy reading these highlights.)
The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the newest of Washington’s national shrines, the largest Catholic church in the country and the seventh largest religious structure in the world. Named in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Shrine is a monument to the reverence that Catholics, everywhere, feel for their faith. Their devotion is reflected in its domes, sculptural figures and mosaics.
Because even steel wears out, the Shrine is built similarly to the medival churches and is constructed entirely of stone, brick, tile and concrete. This is a blending of both medieval and modern techniques. It has been estimated that 350 carloads of limestone, G8.000 cubic feet of granite, 10 million common bricks, IV2 million face bricks, and 10,000 cubic yard of concrete went into the construction of the upper church alone.
The exterior of the Shrine has 137 heroic and life-size pieces of sculpture placed around the entire building. A statue of the Annunciation by the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic can be seen above the main entrance of the Shrine and another, Mary, Queen of the Universe, is placed at the North end of the building.
The bell tower, or Knight’s Tower rises 329 feet from the ground and contrasts with the horizontal lines of the church, it is the 3rd tallest among the world’s tall structures, with the Eiffel Tower rising 984 feet and the Washington Monument, 555 feet. The Knight’s Tower has a Carillon of 56 bells and was also a gift of the Knights of Columbus. Perhaps some of you remember hearing these at the wedding of Luci Johnson Nugent.
The length of the Shrine is half again that of a football field, or 459 feet. At the nave the width is 157 feet. A bird’s-eye view of the Shrine reveals that it is designed in the shape of a Latin cross. A peaked roof covers six of the seven interior domes and the large seventh dome is a principal feature of the exterior. It is covered with brightly colored tile. Five symbols of Our Lady appear as the motif or design on this dome. Eventually all 7 domes will glitter with mosaics.
The interior of the Shrine is immense. Three thousand people may be seated and 6,000 accomodated. The public-address system compensates for the distance by special timing of the sound outlets under each pew, so that a person in back will hear the speaker’s voice at the time he would if it were carrying naturally down the building. Probably the largest radiant heating system in the world circulates hot water through pipes three inches below the slab work.
At the preesnt time the walls of the church are of buff colored face brick, however, when funds become available the walls will be lined with Travertine marble and a walking gallery will be constructed 30 feet above the main floor along the main body of the church. The interior domes will be eventually covered witli mosaics showing The Incarnation, Redemption, Holy Trinity, Creation, Last Judgment, Pentecost and The Triumph of the Lamb.
Christ in Majesty, the largest mosaic of Christ in the world is located on the sanctuary wall. This mosaic has^ a total surface of 3,610 square feet with the head of Christ measuring 8 feet in length and 5 feet in width. The extended arms measure 34 feet from hand to hand. Although there are only a few basic colors (red and gold) there are nearly 4,000 separate shades of color.
In Christ’s robe alone there are more than 300 shades of tinted glass used to make up this huge work of art, the cost of which runs into the millions.
Over the main altar is a canopy or baldachin, 46 feet tall. Each of the supporting columns are of rose colored marble. The sculptural work 011 the white marble canopy is outstanding and was completed by George Snowden.
The entire sanctuary is extremely impressive and gives
the effect not only of reverence but of elegance and majesty.
Thirty chapels have been planned for the north, east and west sides of the upper church. Many have been opened this past year. Those that have been completed are extremely colorful and each is beautiful with its special theme in honor of Mary. The completed chapels are: The Miraculous Medal, St. Vincent de Paul Chapel, St. Louise de Marillac Chapel, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mary, Queen of Hearts, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Mary, Help of Christians, Our Mother of Good Counsel, Our Lady of Siluva, Our Mother of Sorrows, Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Anthony Mary Claret, Our Lady Queen of the Missions.
The chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa, was donated by the Polish people in the U. S. .and was dedicated in 1966, in celebration of Poland’s conversion to Christi* anity, one thousand years ago. Hundreds of thousands of Polish people came to Washington, D. C. for the dedication of the Chapel.
The lower church or Crypt Church is an underground church that provides the atmosphere of the Roman Catacombs. This portion of the Shrine has been in use since 1926. It has an atmosphere of simplicity and yet there is much ornamentation. A number of small chapels, each having an altar, mosaic and window, are situated along the walls of the Crypt Church. They were designed in honor of the saints living during Christ’s lifetime.
Our local branch arranged lor two Slovenian vernacular Masses in this area of the Shrine, one next January and the other in October of this year.
Leaving the Crypt Church and returning to the foyer one can find a few larger chapels, a Shrine store where religious articles are sold and rest rooms and a large cafeteria.
The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has becomo a unique tourist attraction for thousands of people—all races and religions—pass through the portals each day.
Special ceremonies are celebrated by churchmen from all over America and all over the world. As Catholics and Americans we can bo proud of tills majestic and inspiring tribute to the patroness of the United States. It shall remain for centuries, as evidence of the faith, love and devotion that Americans have for our Lady.

The Exterior of the National Shrine
No. 40, Lorain, Ohio. — Here it is, fall already! As we look around we see the beautiful leaves on the trees turning to all the colors of the rainbow.
At our last meeting we decided on our Christmas gift exchange on Dec. 14th, the value of the gift is one dollar. On the same night our regular meeting will be at 7 o'clock p. m. I am hoping for a big turnout. How about some of the members who never attend a meeting? It sure would be nice to see some new faces.
After the meeting lunch will be served. Now, don’t say: “I’m not going because someone will say I just came for the lunch!” That is not so! We are glad to see ALL. of our members come at least once a year.
Election of officers will also take place, for the coming year. And, also we will elect the Mother-of-the Year.
Our president, Agnes Jancar, had a serious operation, but she is coming along very very well. We all hope that she will be back for our next meeting.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Andy Pogaclier, and Mr. and Mrs. Milo Uehlein on their Silver Wedding Anniversaries! The event for the Pogacher’s was held at the church hall with many relatives and friends attending. The Uehleins went to Europe for their anniversary.
A very Happy Birthday to our Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak, on Nov. 5th; and, a happy birthday to all our members who are having a birthday in the months of November and December. May you all have many more happy and healthy ones!

No. 45, Portland, Ore. Attendance was twelve members which isn’t too good. Now that meetings are being held every three months instead of once a month, we should have more members attending. Our next meting will be held on the second Tuesday in December. So, members, be sure to come because we will have discussions for our Christmas party.

MINNESOTA ZVEZA DAY ONE OF THE FINEST CELEBRATIONS
Duluth, Minn. — Minnesota Zveza Day held in Crosby, Minn., Sept llth was a huge success. I can truthfully say, we had one of the finest celebrations ever! The cordiality of the members was out of this world! This branch of ours in Crosby, with only a small membership, did such a wonderful job with arrangements that we can all take a lesson from them!
The Holy Mass was said by Father John Dolsina of Nashwauk. He had a very interesting sermon on Bishop Baraga. The choir sang beautifully. The banquet dinner was delicious. Father Cashin, pastor of the parish, extended his welcome to all. The program, speakers and community singing was enjoyed very much.
Mrs. Mary Bostian, our official guest who is the State President of Ohio- Michigan, came all the way from Cleveland. With her pleasant smile and fine personality, she gave us a truly warn and inspiring message.
Many thanks, Crosby, you can rest assured, we all enjoyed our visit in your city. See you all next year, God willing, and we hope it will be in Tower!

At the meeting, discussion was held in regards to having a social gathering. Plans are to have it at Violet Fazio's home. She also offered to serve refreshments. Mrs. Policli will bring coffee, Mrs. Vidan, the cream, and Mrs. Knez, the sugar. Plans are still tentative as to the date.
Telephone committee will contact members and let them know when it is to be held. We hope the members will turn out in good numbers for this social event and I’m sure everyone will enjoy it. The meeting closed with prayer.

No. 50, Cleveland, O. — Sorry that this column won’t be too long as there isn’t much news to report. All the officers were present except auditor, Theresa Komat. Our main topic was our 35th Anniversary dinner dance of Oct. 9th. Everything was in wonderful shape, and we were going to top everything that we have done in the past.
Honored guest for the day, none other than Supreme Secretary Albina Novak, was warmly expected. It is our pleasure that she could accept
the invitation, and we hope she enjoyed herself for the day.
We planned on honoring the past presidents and our charter members also.
Hostesses for the day were Frances Nemanich, and Sophie Volcansek. Vi Zak was to have the honor also, but due to illness she was not able to attend. (Vi, here’s hoping that you’ll feel well enough to attend the meetings in the near future.) Of course, our Slovenian Beattlettes did the honor of performing at the Dinner Dance.
Toni Turek presented the ladies with tickets to be sold to help the Convention Delegates expenses for next year in Washington, D. C. This way each and every lady will be able to go to the Convention, if we work hard now.
On our sick list we have Sophie Zagorc and Nettie Celesnik, so won’t you ladies see to it that these ladies are remembered with a card?

No. 55, Girard, Ohio. — The Sept. meeting opened with prayer led by President Barbara Umeck. The good attendance of members completed plans for the Card Party. After the business meeting, a social hour was enjoyed and games played. Prizes were awarded to Mmes. Barbara Umeck, Mary Nigut, Helen Biscan, Anna Krivalt and Mary Mehalco.
Delicious refreshments were served by chairman, Mrs. Theresa Ix>zier and her aids.
At this time, we are sorry to announce the death of Mrs. Mary Ce-kuta, our oldest member. She lived a good and long life, and now God will give her the reward in heaven that she earned here on earth. May she rest in peace. Deepest sympathy to Miss Sophie Cekuta, and Mrs. Mary Kristin, her daughters and our members, also to the rest of her family on the loss of their beloved mother.
Mrs. Mary Bradish was hospitalized. Mrs. Margaret Sipuslc, who is ill at home received get-well wishes and we extend to all our members who may be ill, the same good and hearty wishes for a complete recovery.
A new member, Mrs. Mary Selak, was welcomed into the Slovenian Women’s Union. Miss Beatrice Brayer will be the chairman of the November committee and will be assisted by Mmes. Anna Kalan, Ivanka Florjančič, Jennie Darass and Catherine Stabbi. There will be election of officers at this meeting. Plan to attend. Make this the largest meeting we had so far this year.

HEARTY THANKS TO ALL!
On behalf of the Minnesota Zveza members, I wish to thank the hard-working 20 members of Crosby, Minn., Br. 83, for their wonderful hospitality shown us at this year’s Zveza Day. When we arrived after driving about
4	hours, we were served coffee and goodies. We then registered and got ready for our short meeting. At this meeting we were told that all suggestions and complaints should be sent in writing to the State President who can take it up with the officers at the semi-annual meeting. This will save much time at the convention next year in Washington. This, in my opinion, is a really good idea.
Our official guest at Crosby was State President of Ohio-Michigan, Mrs. Mary Bostian of Cleveland. She gave a report on the Convention Give Away whereby tickets' will be sold for prizes of $300, $100 and $100. The money each branch makes on the sales can be used for expenses of the convention delegate. Anyone who is interested in joining the group of members going to the Convention, should contact her local officers.
After the meeting, Father Dolsina of Nashwauk gave us a wonderful talk on Bishop Baraga and we certainly agree with him that soon he should be canonized a saint. Father Dolsina also offered the Holy Mass that morning.
The banquet was then held in the hall of the church. The food was wonderful. We enjoyed the program, too, very much.
The Crosby, Mninesota Day was one of the best attended. It seemed that everyone wanted to go. We in Ely had to drive 190 miles one way, but we had no trouble getting passengers for our bus. We had a good entertainer along, Mrs. Gotchnik with her accordian. We all had fun.
We wish a speedy recovery to Rose Kosar, Mary Teko-vac, Angela Champa, Mary Štepec, M. Pusovich, Mary Z. Palcher and Helen Marn.
In the last few months we have lost from our midst three members: Frances Zupec, Mary Masnik and Josephine Kastelic. May their souls rest in peace
At the present time we are speeding up our sales of the Convention Expense Tickets, so we can order more.
Summer is over so we hope some of our members who have been staying away will show up soon and help us out in this project which will benefit our branch. We appreciate all your ideas and love to hear of something new. Make our meetings more interesting by attending them. Also, we would like some new members in this campaign. QUESTION:
At the Convention in Chicago in 1964, the delegates were told that expenses for the next Convention (1967) would be covered by Cookbook sales. Now we hear of the Convention Ticket project intended for the same purpose. Does this mean there isn’t enough profit for the SWU to pay the full expenses as promised?
ANSWER:
The Convention to Washington, D. C., will be quite costly and Is expected to run much higher than the cookbook fund profit. Traveling expenses for each delegate will be paid as well as other expenses which the Convention will incur.
However, the branches are expected to support the living expenses for each of their delegates and it is estimated that approximately $100 per delegate will be needed. In view of this, the Board of Directors is giving $500 from the general fund for prize money and providing tickets for branches with the stipulation that each branch keeps the money they make on the ticket sales for their delegates' expenses. Any remaining money can be used for transportation of visitors or any other activity the branch deems advisable.

CLEVELAND BRANCHES READY FOR 1967
Dear Members: Our October meeting of the Combined Branches was enjoyable. Our discussion was about our next State Convention in 1967. We hope to have it in Barberton, Ohio and will have a further report on that later.
All of us are excited about plans for our next National Convention. How about our out of town branches in Ohio and Michigan? What are you planning to do? Are you working for the future of your organization? I hope to meet you all at the Convention in Washington!
How are you doing with those tickets? I hope you are all taking advantage of this opportunity. If not, PLEASE do! Don’t pass up this chance to make money. Wherever there is a will, there is a way, so try!
Ladies, one more thing. There is a campaign on now for members. Are you working on this, too? Oh, if yon are not, try to increase your branch. I hope that we will hear good reports from all of you. Let’s hear a little more from Michigan. How about it?
Sunday, Oct. 9th our branch 50 celebrated the 35th anniversary and we surely did celebrate! I wish to congratulate all our members from No. 50 for working so hard to make our branch successful. I hope that we will continue working together in harmony. Our dinner was delicious and satisfactory to all. Our program was a big hit. I am so proud of them all. We wake everybody up!
Our president, Frances Sietz managed a good system with her hard work. With her five committees in force, there wasn’t much of a problem. Rose Želodec, Mamie Marin, Mary Susnik and Antonia Turek all came in with a big hand! and Carole Traven, of course! All pitched in when they saw that help was needed and this is what I call a good team!
Now, Christmas Is around the corner. I presume everybody is already thinking about the holidays. How about a suggestion to make someone happy who has everything, including our cookbook and songbook? II' she really has everything, get that person a couple of tickets for our Convention Give Away. That’s something different and valuable, too.

OH THE COVER . . .
We dedicate the November edition of Zarja—The Dawn to the memory of Rt. Rev. Monsigor John J. Oman.
Monsignor Oman’s memory will live forever. He was loved by all for his simplicity, for the truth by which he lived and for his promises unbroken. We loved him as a friend, whose heart was kind and good. We loved him for the part he played walking and talking with us in an understanding way. He had n ready smile for all and gave a sincere handshake that asked no fee for friendliness or kindness done.
He was born at St. Stephen, Minnesota on May 22, 1879. He was ordained by Bishop Trobec, Bishop of St. Cloud, Minn, on Dec. 26, 1911 and was incardinated in the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio at St. Vitus parish. In 1915, Bishor Schrembs of Cleveland appointed him pastor of St. Lawrence parish where he served until his retirement in ’1962.
He was made Honorary Canon of the Diocese of Ljubljana in 1936. Bishop Hoban of Cleveland invested him as Domestic Prelate on June 7, 1949. He died on March 14, 1966 and was buried in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in his home state of Minnesota, beside the grave of Bishop Trobec.
Now that Monsignor Oman has journeyed on to his Heavenly Home, he has left a fame that will never end, for along life's pathway here on earth, he has strewn pleasant memories among his countless friends. N.
No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. After a long and hot summer, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves picnicing, traveling and gardening. Our fall season has started but our September meeting wasn’t too well attended. Hope our next meeting will be better.
Hats off to Crosby branch for the wonderful Zveza Day they held Sept. 11th! We enjoyed ourselves very much. Hope to see you all either at Tower or Nashwauk, whichever takes it for next year.

With the absence of our president, Mrs. Jennie Mohorčič, our vice-president, Mrs. Frances Ulle presided over the Sept. meeting. We extend our most sincere sympathy to our members and their families who have recently lost their loved ones: Mrs. Julia Grabelsek on the loss of her husband, and Mrs. Carol Sataj on the loss of her father. Now, a few days ago, Mrs. Frances Bajc lost her husband. May the souls of our departed rest in peace.

It. seems that we have a large number of sick members right now. I just had a note from Mrs. Okom saying she had two operations and is now recuperating at home. Jennie Brjlavec has been in the hospital twice and is now home. Others on
the sick list are Mrs. Doliner, Mrs. Arlco, Mrs. Levstick and Mrs. Zadnik. If I have left anyone out — I’m sorry — it’s because I wasn’t notified.

No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. — After a nice summer vacation, we are happy to be resuming our meetings. We held our first meeting of the season in the hall of our new church and it is a beautiful place and it gives one a feeling of pleasure just being in it.
Our State Convention was held in Crosby, Minn, this year and four of our members attended and reported that the convention was very well attended and they all spent a very enjoyable day. It was decided to hold the next convention in Tower, Minnesota.
Our President, Mary Zakrajšek, Marian Dergantz, our secretary, and Anna Bolf and Katie Stimac represented our branch at the convention.
Your reporter has joined your group as a beneficial member and now I feel like one of you, instead of just a social member.
There was very little business to conduct so we adjourned early, although we did offer a special prayer for sick members. We had guests sit our meeting and spent a social hour playing cards. Mary Zakrajšek won the Bridge prize and Leona Smo-lich, one our guests, won the Canasta prize. A very delicious lunch was served by the hostesses, Hilda Denny and Mary Gram. We hope to see you all next meeting, girls!

item of new business at our first fall meeting was a round of applause for Mrs. Jacqueline Natzke, 11233 Ave. L, who was introduced and welcomed as a brand new member. It was also a great joy to have Cathy Cuzella, daughter of Amelia Cuzella as our
guest. She is presently in her sophomore year at Joliet College.
Members are delightedly learning about the events planned for them this fall and winter. Everything from foods to finding out what is happening on the cultural menu.
Nobody ever wonders about the culinary menu, it’s always tops, and the members could always try to make an effort to attend our meetings and find out. Nevertheless, the following ladies have donated the goodies: Amelia Cuzella, Evelyn Driscoll, Agatha Mesin, Kate Markulin, Anna Nagoda, and Mary gambol. We have on our sick list Mary Brozynski, Emma Yergovich who has had surgery at Great Lakes Naval Hospital and recuperated there for five weeks, and Mary Perkovich (96th & Muskegon) who has been one of our most valuable members, ever active in all our affairs, one who throughout the years has served our branch loyally, generously and unselfishly. All of our members wish all of you God Speed, so that all of you will be back with us again very soon.
We had 011 our program Rev. John Beretta, an affiliate of the Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation, a nationwide educational organization dedicated to fighting communism with facts and knowledge, who also is a history and sociology instructor at St. Rita High School and has spoken in churches, community halls, schools, and universities in Illinois and Indiana, with a topic that is always the same—“The ever present threat of tyrany” and the obligation of every individual to cling to his freedom and defend it. The priest Invites everyone he meets to resist what he terms the “gradual erosion of patriotism.”

No. 103, Washington, D. C. — The
September meeting officially opened a new season of lectures, activities and social events. Our branch has already celebrated its first anniversary and many exciting events have taken place during the past year, however, 1966-67, promises to be even more active and interesting.
The monthly meetings are now taking place at St. Columba’s Parish Hall, 4201 Albermarle St., N.W., Washington, D. C. on the second Sunday of the month. The ladies seem delighted with the new location. Besides being easily accessible for most members, it is also an attractive building with many modern conveniences and features.
Mr. Eric Kovacic of the Library of Congress and guest speaker for the meeting presented an interesting and unusual lecture dealing with Slovenes in America Prior to the 20th Century. Mr. Kovacic is planning to submit his lecture notes to the Zarja for publication in the near future. I’m sure the Zarja readers will enjoy the series of articles in the near future.
Our unmarried members are not to be outdone as refreshment hostesses for the meeting. Misses Helen Krotec and Freda Michelitch served an elaborate and delicious assortment of party sandwiches, imported relishes, salad, cake, brownies and coffee. Much time went into the preparation of these “goodies”, but I’m sure the delight and raves of all members were satisfying to these marvelous hostesses.
Welcome to our new member Valerie Pintar. Valerie worked on Capitol Hill a number of years in the office of her Michigan Congressman. She has however, made new plans
to continue her education at Michigan University this fall. We wish her much success in her new venture.
Rain! Rain! Rain! Go away and come back another day! I’m suro everyone who attended our Septern her picnic at Brighton Dam, Md. will agree that even tho we were nearly rained out, much fun was had by all, thanks to the bravery of our crowd and the picnic committee.

On September 30th, we were honored by the arrival of His Excellency, Archbishop Jožef Pogačnik of Ljubljana. A number of prominent Slovenes were on hand at National Airport when the Archbishop arrived. Vice-president, Nika Kovacic welcomed His Excellency and presented a memento of red carnations on behalf of our local SWU branch and our Slovenian community.
Many thanks to Rev. J. Prah of Youngstown, Rev. A. Farkus of Bridgeport, Conn., Rev. F. Blatnik of Patterson, N. J., and Mr. Stane Šušteršič of Washington who completed arrangements for the Archbishop’s visit and sightseeing agenda. The Archbishop commented upon the beauty and culture of the Nation’s Capital as he bid farwell.
On Saturday, October 1, a Slovenian Vernacular Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pogačnik in the Crypt Chapel of the Immaculate Conception Shrine. Immediately following the Mass a reception was held and those who attended had an opportunity to personally meet the Archbishop and receive a memento of this special occasion. His Excellency then spoke to the group of his recent travels throughout the Slovenian parishes of the U. S. and Canada. In his observation the Archbishop found the Slovenian culture and heritage to be very much alive and assured us that if an interest in Slovenian literature, art, and customs would not disappear then the Slovenian nationality would be preserved and renewed in succeeding generations on this continent. He mentioned that the spoken langauge was not the only criteria of measurement for as long as there was interest and some knowledge of the Slovenian culture then there would always be pride and love of one’s ancestral heritage. He encouraged the group to acquaint their children not only with the language Itself but the literature and history of Slovenia and its people.

When Branch No. I in Sheboygan, Wis. celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sept. 11th, as well as the 40tli anniversary of the founding of the Slovenian Women’s Union, a delicious banquet dinner was served to a packed house at Standard Hall after 'an impressive church service. The dinner, wonderfully prepared, was most enjoyed by the members and guests Afterwards, a number of women interested in the cole slaw served, inquired whether a cooked dressing was used and could they have the recipe as well as for the smooth, pleasant-tasting Lemon Torte served for the dessert. Mrs. Mary Stieber, member of Branch No. 1 and daughter of Mrs. Mary Germ, also a member and owner of Standard Hall, is happy to share the recipes which were prepared under her supervision for the dinner.
COLE SLAW
Mrs. Frances Melanz, also a member of Branch No. 1, who helped to prepare gallons of the cole slaw, estimated the following amounts to serve about 18 to 20 people. (The dressing is not cooked; just mixed and added to cabbage.)
About 10 cups cabbage, cut fine 1 medium onion, chopped fine 1 clove garlic, ground Salt and pepper to taste Dressing:
I cup sugar 1 cup vinegar 1 cup salad oil
LEMON TORTE
Juice and rind of 1 lemon 1 cup sugar 1 M> cups of hot water 1 package lemon jello 1 can regular condensed milk( put milk in refrigerator overnight or in freezer for i hour before beating.)
Make jello mixture with the hot water and jello, and add sugar and lemon. Cool until slightly thick. Beat the cold condensed milk until stiff. Add jello mixture and beat. Use graham cracker crust and pour into 9x13 pan. Chill. Cut in squares and decorate with a small mound of whipped cream.
Graham Cracker Crust:
1 '/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (18 crackers)
:5 tablespoons sugar Vj cup butter, melted Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix graham cracker crumbs and sugar in bowl. Add butter; mix thoroughly.
Press mixture firmly and evenly against bottom of pan. (No baking.) Add filling.
TURKEY-TIME
With Thanksgiving fast approach ing you may begin to look at turkey prices. The large turkeys are always the best buy. Not only is the price less per pound, but the percentage of waste per pound is also less, and the meat is usually better quality.
For the smaller family and smaller oven, have the butcher halve or quarter it for you. Freeze the extra and use it when you wish without being faced with a freezer full of leftover roast turkey. In fact, any day in the year now may be turkey day.
ROASTING—HALF TURKEY
Tie tail and leg of half bird together by stitching string through skin at end of leg and then through meat of tail. Place bird cut side up. Sew up loose skin at neck so it forms pocket. Salt pocket, and fill loosely with stuffing. Salt body cavity and stuff. Cut heavy brown paper and place over stuffing of both cavity and necls. With needle and thread catch skin on each side over paper forming a lacing. Or mound stuffing 011 heavy paper on rack and place bird skin side up over stuffing. Hub skin with fat. Roast at 22*5 degrees F. stuffing side down on rack in shallow open pan—no water. Cook 11/2 hours, then baste with drippings and baste every 45 minutes until done. Half turkey 7 to 9 pounds takes 3% to 4% hours, a larger half bird longer.

TURKEY BROTH
In a large kettle, combine all the left-over turkey bones, one and one half quarts water, one sliced carrot, one sliced onion, one stalk celery, two teaspoons salt, and one-eigth teaspoon pepper. Simmer, covered, for two hours. Strain. Makes about four and one-half cups broth.

TURKEY CHOWDER Two slices bacon, chopped One-fourth cup chopped onion One cup diced celery Two cups cubed potatoes One cup diced cooked turkey Two cups turkey brotli One cup whole kernel corn Two tablespoons chopped parsley Two tablespoons flour One cup of milk Salt and pepper
Place chopped bacon in fry pan over low heat. When part of the fat has cooked out, add the onion.. Continue cooking until onion is soft and bacon is brown. Meanwhile, cook celery, potatoes, and turkey in broth until vegetables are tender. Then add corn, cooked bacon, onion.
and parsley. Blend flour with milk and stir into cooking mixture. Cook about 15 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Season to taste. Serves six.
MEAT ROLLS IN JACKETS
Mrs. Dorothy Sternisha, for many years recording secretary of Branch 25, Cleveland, Ohio, submitted the following recipe for a family of 4:
% pound ground beef
3 heaping tablespoons cooked rice
(Uncle Ben’s)
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1 egg, well beaten
1	medium onion, chopped fine, (reserve 1 tablespoon for sauce) Tomato paste
4 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste A little garlic, if desired 6 to 7 cabbage leaves Fry onion and parsley in 2 tablespoons butter until onion is tender. Add this to the egg, meat, cooked rice, garlic, salt and pepper and tomato paste mixture. Mix. If the mixture is too thick, add another tablespoon tomato paste.
Cut off the hard section of the cabbage leaves at stem; then cook the leaves in boiling water for 3 minutes to make them less brittle. Drain. Place one heaping tablespoon of the meat mixture on cabbage leaf in a sausage fashion. Roll tightly. In a greased baking dish pack the rolls close together with the ends of each roll tucked under so it can not open.
In 2 tablespoons butter saute one tablespoon chopped onion; add one cup of water and 3 tablespoons tomato paste. Bring to boil. Pour this over the rolls. Bake covered at 350 degrees one and a half hours, turning once. If desired, place bacon slices over the rolls. When done, take out the rolls and add one tabie-spoon flour to the mixture, mix, return the rolls to cook a few minutes longer. If there is not enough moisture, add a few spoons sour cream.

In a time of world troubles, the daily reminders that there is a Giver of gifts, a Power greater than ourselves, will furnish us with spiritual strength just as the abundance of our tables gives our physical strength. Prvega decembra letos bo poteklo 40 let, odkar je v Sheboyganu	bila ustanovljena prva	podružnica	naše	organizacije, 19tega decembra pa 40	let, odkar	se je	na
podlagi te podružnice rodila Slovenska Ženska Zveza.
Nobeni prijateljici nisem rekla naj pride na prvi sestanek, ker sem hotela da pridejo le tiste, ki se za ustanovitev ženske organizacije same zanimajo, prosila pa sem domačega g. župnika Rev. James Cherneta naj v cerkvi oznani ter povabi faranke na sejo. Poleg mene in moje hčerke Margarete, se je vabilu odzvalo 10 rojakinj:
Mary Godez, Meta Eržen, Mary Repenšek, Mary Bre-zonik, Frances Ribich, Josephine Kregel, Johanna Krol-nik, Frances Suscha, Mary Falle in Angela Falle. Takoj prihodnji dan se je več rojakinj priglasilo, ki radi zadržkov niso mogle na sestanek. V enem tednu smo imele 36 članic, s	katerimi je podružnica	pričela poslovati,	ko
•se je Zveza	ustanovila.
Da so od kraja bile težave, se razume, ker tiste čase ženska organizacija ni bila odobravana. Na sestanku smo se dobro zavedale, kaj ta korak pomeni. V dnevniku AMERIKANSKI SLOVENEC so sicer rojakinje iz vse Amerike zahtevale naj se ženska organizacija ustanovi, vkljub temu je bilo tvegano in skrbelo nas je, če nam bo kdo sledil. Isti večer se je tudi v Chicagu vršil sestanek za novo podružnico. To nam je dalo korajžo. "Bosta vsaj dve postojanki!” smo se navduševale in ustanovile podružnico, ki je dala temelj prvi slovenski ženski organizaciji v Ameriki.
Pri vsakem društvu je odbor tisti, ki vodi in dela; članstvo se po odboru ravna. Naša podružnica je bila vsa leta srečna, ker je imela vestne in delavne odbornice ter zvesto članstvo. Rada bi navedla imena vseh, ki so orale ledino in letno doprinašale svoj del k obstoju in razvoju podružnice; kar radi prostora ni mogoče, omenim vsaj tiste, ki so bile v uradu dalje kot 10 let.
Mary Godez, prva predsednicta, je zastopala predsedniški in podpredsedniški urad 20 let. Margaret Fischer, bivša tajnica, blagajničarka in zdaj zopet tajnica—22 let. Anna Modiz, zapisnikarca 34 let, bivša direktorica, Kegljaške lige za Srednji-zapad, zdaj načelnica za Programno knjigo. Amalia Zunter, nadzornica 14 let in naš prijazni “šofer.” Anna Zavrl, predsednica in podpredsednica je bila v uradu 13 let. Kristine Rupnik, 10 let predsednica,
2	leti tajnica. Terese Zagožen, presednica, tajnica, blagajničarka, skupno 11 let. Uršula Marver, rediteljica 13 let. Jaz sem bila nadzornica 22 let in prvo leto zapisnikarca.
Aktivnosti. — Podružnica je pod vodstvom sester Terese Simonich in Johanne Suscha takoj po ustanovitvi prirejala javne večerje, dobiček pa darovala domači cerkvi.
Dvakrat smo imele zelo uspešno razstavo ročnih dol.
Več let smo imele pouk o gospodijnstvu, ki ga je vodila pokojna sestra Teresa Simonich.
Itiele smo predstave filmskih slik	iz	stare	domovine
in Amerike ter več prominentnih govornikov in govornic.
Naša podružnica je edina v naselbini, ki vsako leto s posebnim programom počasti Materin dan.
Več let zaporedoma je podružnica nagradila dva naj-pridnejša graduanta naše farne šole.
Pevski klub je bil naš ponos. Po desetletnem obstoju je zanimanje zanj žal ponehalo in klub	se	je	razpustil.
Več let je obstojal šivalni klub.
Za časa zadnje vojne so naše članice organiziralo lasten krožek Ameriškega Rdečega križa, kjer so bile odlikovane za delo v pletenju in šivanju.
Za Zvezin šolninski in dobrodelni sklad je naša podružnica od prijateljev zbrala in iz blagajne darovala skupno $794.00.
Kot članica Jugoslovanskega pomožnega odbora, slovenska sekcija, je podružnica zbrala nad 700 funtov obleke, v denarju pa prispevala $200.00 za nakup hrane, kar je bilo poslano v staro domovino v pomoč od vojne prizadetim. Zdravstvenim zavodom v Slovenijo je bilo iz Sheboygana dostavljeno več zdravniških instrumentov.
Za zidavo hiše šolskih sester naše fare je podružnica prispevala 650 dolarjev.
Leta 1939, 1945, 1951, 1957 so se pri nas vršile Zvezine Kegljaške tekme za Srednji-zapad. Voditeljice so bile: Antonia Retell, Anna Modiz, Louise Ribich. — Kristina Rupnik je organizirala prvi kegljaški krožek že leta 1929. Tekmo so imele v Chicagu marca 1930.
Leta 1930 je v Sheboyganu gostovala Zvezina narodna konvencija.
Podružnica je včlanjena v Sheboygan County Welfare Council, kjer njene zastopnice po možnosti sodelujejo.
Podružnica denarno podpira javne humanitarne organizacije.
Točasno članstvo je: 201 rednih in družabnih članic ter 54 otrok. V blagajni se je prvi mesec nahajalo $1.00, zdaj pa $1,443.88.
Bolnim članicam podružnica nakloni trimesečni prosti asesment. O Božiču se jih spomni z malim darilcem.
Odkar podružnica obstoji je preminulo 56 članic. Naj mirno počivajo! Med nami bo vedno ostal blag spomin na nje in na njih dobra dela.
PROSLAVA 10 LETNICE
V nedeljo, 11. septembra, je naša podruž.nica slavila 40-letnico obstoja skupno z Wisconsin državno konvencijo.
Dva velika busa iz Milwaukee-West Allis sta pripeljala 84 članic na konvencijo, vršečo se dopoldne v cerkveni dvorani. Po cerkvenem opravilu so se vse članice udeležile slavnostnega banketa v Standard dvorani.
Popoldanski program je otvorila predsednica podružnice, sestra Olga Saye, s prijaznim pozdravom ter zahvalo vsem, ki so za to slavnost sodelovale. Predstavila je voditeljico programa.
Prvi govornik je bil mestni župan g. Joseph R. Browne, ki se je s soprogo banketa udeležil. Povdarjal je veliko važnost in neprecenljivo vrednoto ženskih organizacij.
Domači g. župnik Father James Schlaffer, je naglašal veliko delo in zasluge ženskih organizacij za javnost, za fare in šole.
Sestra Antonia Turek, Zvezina glavna predsednica, je s svojim prijaznim soprogom dospela iz Clevelanda že prejš-ni večer. Govorila je na državni konvenciji ter tolmačila Zvezina pravila. Na popoldanskem programu je apelirala zlasti na matere naj svoje hčerke vpišejo v Zvezo, da bo s tem organizacija ostala vedno mlada. Dober nasvet! Upamo, da ga bodo upoštevale vsaj nekatere matere.
Glavna tajnica, sestra Albina Novak, je govorila prisrčno ter omenjala težkoče prvih let, ko sta se podružnica in Zveza za obstanek borili. Njej so prejšna leta dobro znana, saj se za Zvezo udejstvuje že nad 35 let.
V imenu gl. podpresednice sestre Marie Floryan, je čustveno govorila njena hčerka Marion Marolt, predsednica pod št. 17 v West Alllsu.
Z lepim govorom se je postavila sestra Rose Kraemer, državna predsednica in tajnica pod št. 43 v Milwaukee.
K besedi je bila poklicana sestra Mary Petrich, gl. odbornica KSKJ, ki je podružnici lepo čestitala v imenu svoje organizacije.
Hčerka Hermine Dicke, urednica kolone POTS AND PANS se je poleg Izraženih čestltek priporočala za navodila slovenskih delikates.
Predstavljene so bile ustanovne članice: Mary Godez,
Margaret Fischer, Mary Brezonik, Frances Ribičk, Anna Modiz, Anna Zavrl, Johanna Suscha, Antoinette Brula.
V	imenu ustanovnih članic je goste lepo pozdravila prva predsednica sestra Mary Godez ter omenjala delo in napore, pa tudi uspehe prejšnih let. Pristopila je sedajna predsednica, sestra Olga Saye, ter mi v imenu podružnice izročila velik zavitek kot darilo. Silno sem bila radovedna kaj je v njem. Na moje veliko začudenje se je iz zavitka prikazala umetno izdelana moja najljubša slika (portrait) v barvah. Nato mi je državna predsednica, sestra Rose Kraemer poklonila slovenski šopek — 40 živordečih nageljnov — kot pozdrav od podružnic iz Milwaukee-West Allis. Presenečenje za presenečenjem in zahvala na vse strani.

Z brzojavnimi čestitkami sta nas presenetila dva U. S. senatorja: g. Frank J. Lausche,senator države Ohio in g. William Proxmire, senator države Wisconsin. Senator l’roxmire je še dodal, da ga veseli, ker je država Wisconsin igrala tako važno vlogo ob ustanovitvi naše lepe in ugledne organizacije.
Barbara Grasch, članica št. 17 tz West AHis je poslala zahvalno pismo za prejeto šolninsko nagrado.
Nastopil je trenutek, ki so ga vsi gosti popolnoma zasedene dvorane napeto pričakovali. V krasni večerni obleki je prišla na oder ljubka Marija Kranjc Fischinger z Mary Slioltis Marcus, spremljevalko na klavir. Prispeli sta iz Chicage. —- “Obe sta članici naše organizacije!" sem kot voditeljica programa ponosno povdarila.
Marija je prvi del koncerta posvetila nemški, francoski in italijanski operi,, nato se pa preoblekla v slovensko narodno nošo ter pričela peti priljubljene slovenske pesmi tako čustveno, da je vse navzoče očarala. Marsikateri je imel solzne oči. “Marija me je prestavila v moja mlada leta,, ko sem jaz pela iste pesmi,” je ganjena povedala ena izmed starejših pevk.
Dve članici Mladinskega oddelka, Yvonne Kregel in Mary Jo Grabner, sta pevki poklonili lep slovenski šopek ter se zahvalili, ker je prišla v Sheboygan.
Marija je videla in čutila, kako si je vsa srca osvojila, zato je rekla: “Kadar me spet želite imeti, bom v Sheboygan vedno rada prišla.”
Program je bil končan z ameriško himno, katero je z Marijo ob spremljevanju predsednice Olge s harmoniko, polo vso občinstvo.
Sledila je družabna ura. Predsednica Olga je stopila na oder s svojo harmoniko, odnekod so se pojavili pa še trije muzikanti: Johanna Zore in Frank Koroshetz s harmonikama in Richard Kraemer, sin državne predse-nice, s saksofonom. To je bila muzika kot se šika!
Gosti so se prav zadovoljni razšli in naša slavnost, za katero so se več nesecev vršile priprave, se je lepo končala. Zahvala zato gre pridnim odbornicam in članicam, ki so v tem pogledu sodelovale.
Ljubki Mariji Fischinger in njeni pianistki Mary Marcus, prav iskreno želimo lepo bodočnost. Marija bo zanaprej bivala v Washingtonu, P. C. kjer je njen soprog, dr. Peter Fischinger, nastavljen kot znanstvenik in profesor
v	Narodnem zdravniškem institutu. Pianistka Mary bo muziko še naprej študirala. S soprogrom živita v Illinoisu, kjer profesor Marcus poučuje matematiko v kolegiju.
Pri pisanju zgodovine naše podružnice in Zveze ne morem mimo, da ne bi omenila mojega soproga Johna — nejevoljen bo, ko bo čital — v kako veliko pomoč in iz-podbudo mi je vsa leta bil.
Javnost ni znala za notrajne boje; za poniževalna in zasmehljiva pisma, ki so mi od početka Zveze, pa tudi pozneje, stalno prihajala. Radi Zveze so se mi izneverile prijateljice, na katere sem zidala; sporočeno mi je bilo žaljivo in neutemeljeno obrekovanje. V takih slučajih sem bila na tem, da predsedništvo in vodstvo Zveze pustim in se umaknem iz javnosti. John mi je pa vsakikrat dajal korajžo in me bodril češ, menda se ne boš podala par nevoščljivim osebam, ko imaš tisoče za seboj, ki te imajo rade in tvoje delo odobravajo. Pa sem se opogumila in spet vzela v roke vajeti ter Zvezo vodila dolgih 20 let.
John je večkrat moral biti sam, ko sem šla na potovanje po Zvezinih opravkih; kak drug mož bi tega morda ne dovolil. Kot on, so se tudi otroci za moje delo zanimali. — Za 40-Ietnico je sin Teddy čestital s pripombo: “Mama, spominjam se, kako si bila za Zvezo navdušena in pisala kar naprej. Vsak dan sem — mali fantiček — nesel cel šop pisem na pošto. Spominjam se tudi, kako si nas Ti učila slovenščino, mi otroci pa smo Tebe učili angleščino. To so bili veseli časi . . . !”
Končam z iskrenimi čestitkami naši podružnici in s srčno željo za nadaljni napredek. Prisrčno se zahvalim za krasno darilo, ki bo meni in moji družini v lep in trajen spomin. Zahvalim se gl. odbornicam za prijazne čestitke in podružnicam v Milwaukee, West Allis za lepi šopek vsem članicam ba prijateljstvo, ki mi je tekom let bilo v veliko oporo. Naj vas vse skupaj Bog blagoslovi!

SŽZ SE SPOMINJA MSGR. OMANA
Ob prazniku vseh svetnikov, je postavila cerkev praznik vernih duš, dan mrtvih. Njihovemu spominu je posvečen ves mesec november. V teh dneh nas Cerkev vodi na božjo njivo, kjer počivajo naši dragi rajnki. Za mnoge je minilo več let odkar so nas zapustili, za nekatere komaj leto in še manj. Spomin na mnoge bo ostal svež dolgo med nami in še posebno na tiste, ki so storili mnogo dobrega v življenju. Eden izmed neminljivih spominov ostane prav gotovo na pokojnega Rt. Rev. John J. Omana.
Msgr. Oman je bil rojen v Minnesoti 22. maja, 1879.
V	duhovnika je bil posvečen 26. decembra, 1911. Službo kaplana je nastopil pri fari sv. Vida v Clevelandu leta 1912. Učenci pri sv. Vidu so namah zljubili prijaznega duhovnika in se pridno učili veronauk pod njegovim nadzorstvom. On je znal držati pozornost učencev, ker dasi je bil strog, je znal dati priznanje vsem, ki so se lepo učili.
Clevelandski škof je kmalu izvedel o zmožnosti Father Omana in ga je že leta 1915 postavil za župnika pri fari sv. Lovrenca v sosedščini Newburgh, to na južni strani mesta Clevelanda. V teku njegovega vodstva je zgradil krasno novo cerkev, šolo in lepo prenovil vse cerkvene prostore med katerimi je tudi dvorana, ki služi že dolgo let naselbini za vsakovrstne prireditve in razvedrilo. Pri sv. Lovrencu je ostal do leta 1962, ko je stopil v pokoj in to vsled rahlega zdravja.
Msgr. Oman je bil prijazne zunanjosti in velik prijatelj mladine in zato je tudi mladina visoko cenila svojega dušnega pastirja. Krasno je obvladal ameriški in slovenski jezik. Bil je profesor bogoslovja in tudi izvrsten pisatelj. V listu Ameriška Domovina je leta in leta prispeval kolono “Newburške novice,” katere smo brali po vsem Clevelandu z užitkom, ker je znal poljudno urediti svoje spise. Priznan je bil tudi kot izvrsten govornik. Njegove pridige niso bile nikdar suhoparne, saj je imel vedno pri-
pravljene lepe nauke, med katerimi je znal vpeljati nekaj za smeh in šalo.
Msgr. Oman je bil zvest prijatelj naše Slovenske Ženske Zveze in je z velikim poudarkom v oznanilih v cerk-
vi	nagovarjal matere in dekleta, da pristopijo. Neštetokrat je častiti gospod pohvalil delo naše Zveze. Strinjal se je z našimi nameni in se rad udeleževal prireditev, zlasti obletnic. Imel je veliko zaupanje v vodstvo Zveze in se tudi postavil in zagovarjal dobro ime, kadar je videl, da se komu dela krivica. Bil je možak prve vrste in stal za dobro stvar ter krepko nastopil v naš dobrobit. Vselej je imel pripravljeno toplo roko v pozdrav ter mnogokrat dostavil: “Dobro delate — kar tako naprej!”
Leta 1936 je bil ustoličen za ljubljanskega kanonika po naročilu ljubljanske škofije. Ustoličenje se je vršilo v cerkvi svetega Lovrenca po clevelandskem škofu Schrembs. Ob tej priliki je bil preoblečen v kanonika in je dobil kanoniški sedež v ljubljanski stolnici.
Dne 7. junija, 1949 je bil povišan v Monsignorja po škofu Hobanu v Clevelandu. Zdravje mu je začelo pešati in tako je stopil v pokoj 6. junija, 1962 in se podal v svoj rojstni kraj, St. Stephen, Minnesota, kjer je dne 14. marca, '1966 izdihnil svojo blago dušo. Maša zadušnica je bila brana v isti cerkvi, kjer je bil pred 55 leti posvečen v mašnika in njegovi zemeljski ostanki počivajo na pokopališču sv. Štefana poleg groba škofa Trobca s katerim sta bila velika prijatelja. Sedaj sta skupaj na božji njivi med cipresami in krizantemami odkjer nas gotovo opominjata, da pride konec tudi za nas! Kar smo danes mi, to boste jutri vi. Tisočkrat blagor vsem tistim, ki verujejo v posmrtno življenje, ki nam veleva: Kdor veni je bo živel, tudi če umrje.

Tiha tu se širi njiva, tiha njiva božji vrt, in pri rožah biva vrtnarica — bela smrt.
V	višku smrtni angel plove žalno zre na njivo to, in med blažene duhove z dušami hiti v nebo.
Noč in dan stoje odprte duri v ta tihotni stan; smrt tu plete smrtne prte zanj, ki pot mu je skončan.
Blagor, kogar smrt zaloti, v Bogu ugasne mu oko: Kvišku angelske peroti v sveti raj ga poneso.
ODBOR SHEBOYGANSKE PODRUŽNICE SE ZAHVALUJE
Dne 18. sept. smo zopet začele z našimi rednimi sejami. Navzoče so bile vse odbornice, razen predsednice Olge, ki je bila na potovanju s soprogom in družbo po Kanadi. Za razvedrilo so lovili ribe. Prisotne so bile tudi vse načelnice, ki so imele na skrbi priprave in izvršitev zadnje drž. konvencije za Wis. ter proslavo 40 letnice obstoja podružnice in SŽZ. Ko smo slišale zaključna poročila, smo bile v resnici iznenadene, ker poleg lepo izpeljane slavnosti, imamo tudi lep denarni preostanek za našo blagajno.
Odbor podružnice se iskreno in prisrčno zahvaljuje vsem, kateri ste na razne načine pripomogli za tako izvrstno izpeljan Zvezin dan v Sheboyganu, 11. sept.
Na konvenciji so bile zastopane naslednje podružnice: Št. 1, Sheboygan, št. 12 in 43, Milwaukee, št. 17, W. Allis, št. 102 iz Willarda, Wis. so poslale lepe pozdrave. Ses. Rose Kraemer, drž. preds. je vodila živahno zborovanje ob številni udeležbi članic. Resolucije in priporočila o-dobrena na tem zborovanju, bodo priobčena v Zarji prihodnji mesec.
Posebno zahvalo smo dolžne domačemu gospodu župniku Rev. James Schlaffer za lep govor na konvenciji, v cerkvi in na banketu, enako tudi čestitim šolskim sestram za naklonjenost in Holy Name Society za usluge ter našim zvonarjem Robert Margenar in pomočnikom, ki so tako lepo pritrkovali 10 minut pred sv. mašo. Zvonovi naše cerkve Sv. C. in M. so prišli iz stare domovine, kakor mi in ko so nam tako domače zadoneli in počastili naše goste, smo bile v resnici ginjene.
Zahvala naši gl. preds. Tony Turek, ki se je udeležila zborovanja in za konvenciji razložila razne točke, ki pridejo v razpravo na prihodnji konvenciji v Washingntonu, D. C. — I.epa hvala tudi za lepo šivalno torbico katero je. darovala v prid naše podr. Čeprav je čas bil kratek,
vendar smo razmotrivale več važnih zadev naše organizacije in bodoče konvencije.
Ob 1 uri pop. se je pričel slavnostni banket v Standard dvorani. Vzelo bi preveč prostora, ako bi hotela opisati vse posamezne točke, ki so bile podane v pozdrav, številne čestitke odličnih osebnosti in iskrene želje za dolgo in častno bodočnost naši podr. in SŽZ. Hvala in čast naši cenjeni ustanoviteljici sestri Marie Prisland in ustanovnim članicam pionirkam, katere smo počastili ob 40 letnici njihovega dela za ugled in dobrobit slovenskega ženstva v Ameriki.
Naj omenim še našo ljubko pevko go. Marijo Kranjc Pishinger iz Washingtona, ki je podala lep koncert ameriških in slovenskih pesmi ob spremljavi Mary Sholtis-Markus iz Chicaga. Vse premalo časa smo imeli, radi bi jo bili še poslušali, toda čas je vse prehitro potekal, morali smo zaključiti lep in pomembni slavnosni dan naše podr. Hvaležno smo vzele slovo od vseh gostov, posebno sosester iz Milwaukee, West Allis in gl. odbornic, preds. Turek in gl. tajnice Albine Novak in vseh drugih. Torej še enkrat prisrčna zahvala vsem za vso dobro voljo, ki ste jo nam izkazali ta dan. Živela naša Slov. Ženska Zveza še na mnoga leta.

ŽALOSTNO SPOROČILO. Dne 25. avg. je preminula naša dolgoletna članica, Josephine Kushman, ki zapušča vnukinjo Mrs. Mary Marolt iz West Allis in več drugih sorodnikov tukaj. Imela je lep pogreb iz naše cerkve.
VABILO NA SEJO. Članice ste prošene, da pridete na sejo tretjo nedeljo, dne 20. novembra. Odločile bomo kje bomo gostovale Božičnico in vedno imamo tudi več važnih stvari za rešiti. Pripeljite kako novo članico, ker v teku je velika kampanja. Torej na svidenje. Vsem bolnim članicam želimo ljubega zdravja.

Prihodnje poletje bo kar hitro zopet naokrog, čakati do zadnjega časa ni najbolj praktično, ker potnikov je čedalje več in primeri se, da se ne bo dobil prostor za večjo skupino zadnje mesece; ampak vse se pa da lepo urediti, če se prijavite sedaj, ko so prostori še na razpolago.

Prvi odhod bo 15. JUNIJA. Vrnete se lahko 17. julija ali 16. avgusta. Voditeljica te grupe bo glavna tajnica Albina Novak.
Druga večja kupina bo odpotovala 13. JULIJA in se vrnila 4. septembra. To je osem tednov.
V	načrtu so tudi sledeči datumi pri katerih pride vpoštev znižana skupinska cena in sicer:

ZGLEDI VLEČEJO
Včasih je dobro, da človek pogleda samega sebe v zrcalo, da vidi kakšen je. Veliko stvari vidimo, ki jih dru gače ne bi opazili. Če tudi nam drugii novejo o njih jim le neradi verjamemo. Tako je tudi z našim zadržanjem. Spraševanje vesti o našem zadržanju nam lahko odkrije veliko stvari, ki bi jih drugače sami ne bi opazili. Vest je strog sodnik.
Oglejmo si naslednja dva primera in presodimo po njih samega sebe. Zaključki so lahko porazni.
Sv. maša se je pravkar začela. Mlad mož, imenujmo ga gospod Sebenar, se je zrinil v zadnjo klop. Gospod Sebenar ni imel nobene posebne vere. Bolj iz radovednosti kakor pa iz navade se je danes pripravil, da je šel v cerkev. Toliko je slišal o novem bogoslužju in duhovnem prenovljenju in ga je zanimalo kako to zgleda. Morda mu bo to pomagalo, da se bo znašel in se vere bolj trdno oprijel kakor je pa to storil do sedaj.
Cerkev je bila precej polna, skoraj natlačena. Zato ja gospod Sebenar imel težavo najti sedež. Komaj se je zrinil v zadnjo klop. Dasi je imel priložnost, da je videl, kaj se godi na oltarju, je vendar le malo razumel tega, kar se je tam godilo. Zelo ga je zanimalo, kaj se godi okrog njega. Med drugimi stvarmi je videl tole: mož
srednjih let je dremal, neko mladoletno dekle je sedelo in nepremično strmelo v praznino, neki mož je imel v roku pesmarico pa ni pel, neka ženska je imela v roki venec pa ga je držala pri eni in isti jagodi ves čas sv. maše, neki fant se je stalno oziral po dekletih, neko dekle se ves čas igralo s svojimi lasmi, neka žena je kar naprej popravljala svoj klobuk. Ob koncu sv. maše je bil gospod Sebenar nemalo presenečen nad to razno površnostjo in je bil ne malo zmešan.
Prihodnjo nedeljo je pogledal sam vase in rekel sam pri sebi: Kakšen vtis bi jaz napravil na človeka, ki bi rad poglobil svojo vero.
Nekdo je pripovedoval zgodbo o svoji šestiletni hčerki Tereziji. Njena mati ji je prebrala, zgodbo sv. maše Terezije, njene patrone. Deklici se je zdela zgodba Male Terezije nad vse čudovita.
Njena Mati ji	je rekla:	Zakaj	ti	ne bi mogla biti
vedno dobra in	pridna kakor je bila	sv. Mala Terezija.
Deklica je en čas premišljevala potem pa rekla čisto nedolžno: Mogoče zaradi tega, ker nimam tako dobrih staršev kakor jih je	ona imela.	Nihče	ne	zna povedati tako
čisto resnico in	brez zlobe	kakor	to	znajo napraviti o-
troci. Tisoč lepih besed ne zmore tega kakor en sam dober zgled.
DOPISI
Št. 2, Chicago, III. — Po izredno velikem uspehu proslave 40 letnice naše podr. in Zveze, je sedaj pred nami več važnih aktivnosti. Dne 10. nov se bo vršil t. zv. penny social. Članice lepo vabimo, da prinesete dobitke, pecivo In predvsem, da se večera udeležite v kar največ jem številu. Na sporedu so priljubljene igre ter dobitku po centu. Pridite vse, ker bo to večer lepega razvedrila od 7:30 do 9:30 zvečer.
Ne pozabite tudi, da bomo dne 11. dec. imele letno Božičnico za mladinske člane in dne 8. dec. bo pa naša redna letna seja združena z božičnico za odrasle. Vse sestre, prav vljudno vabljene že sedaj.
Sedaj se nam nudi sijajna prilika, da pomagamo našim konvenčnim delega-tinjam s tem, da pridno segamo in prodajamo listke po $1 za lepe denarne nagrade. Ves dobiček obdrži podružnica.

Št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — S tem sporočam in vljudno vabim vse na našo letno Games party, prireditev, ki se bo vršila 20. nov. ob 7:30 zvečer. Podr. vabi tudi vse sosednje članice in prijatelje Zveze, da pridete v obilnem številu. Srečni boste odnesli vredne dobitke in purane, da jih boste imeli pripravljene za Thanksgiving day, in ga ne bo treba iskati po trgovinah.
Izraze sožalja pošiljamo čla. Christine Mehle in Elsie McGill, ki sta Izgubile svoje očete, John Trante in Joseph Rus (Aplatarjev Jože.) Na domu iz bolnišnice se zdravijo, Angela Zakrajšek in Mary Oaky in moja
malenkost. Bom končala, ker te vrstice pišem v Corwin Hospital.
V	poletnem času v juliju je umrl splošno poznani rojak, pionir in društveni dlavec, John Germ. Hitro se je raznesla tužna vest o njegovi smrti, čeprav smo pričakovali, da pride božja poslanka in ga reši dolge in mučne bolezni. Dolga leta je bil presednilc in zadnje čase častni predsednik KSKJ. Mnogi se ga spominjamo v Pueblu in po ameriških naselbinah, ker je bil prijazen v občevanju in vsak ga je vzljubil in spoštoval. Bil je mož vesele narave z harmoniko in lepim glasom, ki je vsako družbo spravil v dobro voljo. Nikdar se ni povzdigoval nad druge, ampak vedno je ostal skromen, dober in prijazen do vseh. Njegov veličastni pogreb je dokazal kako je bil pokojni priljubljen in spoštovan, ne samo od Slovencev, ampak tudi mnoge druge narodnosti so bile zastopane na njegovi zadnji poti. Navzoči so bili naslednji gl. odborniki od KSKJ, Železnikar, in George Brince; od Z. S. Z. gl. preds. A»thony Yersin ter Edward Tomsic, podpreds.
Vrste naših slovenskih pionirjev se krčijo. Dva dni po smrti g. Germa je umrl Jalte Kastelic, St., ki je bil poznan v naši fari kot vzorni gospodar in skrbni oče svoje družine. Vzgojil je otroke, ki so tudi v ponos naselbine. Sin hčerke Josephine Horvat, je uslužben kot mestni sheriff. Priporočamo ga v ponovno izvolitev.
Sin Lojza opravlja svojo furnace-heating trgovino. Vsem naše sožalje.
Nadalje žalujejo za svojimi dragimi: Jennie Kočevar je umrl brat Herman Lesar; Ann Perko umrl dragi oče Ivan Medonich. Dne 29. jul. smo spremile k večnemu počitku našo dobro članico Mary Hren, ki je doča-
kala lepo starost 84 let. Otroci so ji ljubeznivo stregli v njeni dolgi bolezni do smrti. Pokojna je bila osmi smrtni slučaj v naši podr. do julija.
Prosim čla., da bi se vedno udeležile pogrebnih obredov naših dragih sosester. — Na pogreb g. Germa in Kastelica sta prišla tudi Mr. in Mrs. Ijiiwrence Bandi iz Canon City, ki sta tudi obiskala prijatelje v Pueblo.
Naše globoko sožalje družinam vseh pokojnih. Enako tudi sožalje Ann Spelich in Elsie Peashka ob nenadni smrti brata Franka Kalbezen, ki je podlegel srčnemu napadu.
Pokojnim želimo mirno spanje v hladnem grobu in luč nebeška naj jim sije.
Pod zdravniško oskrba je že več časa tajnica Tončka Klun. Na bolniški listi je še vedno Mary Novak iz Santa Fe. Mary Ahlin se zdravi na domu. Ann Mishmash je prestala težko operacijo žolčnih kamnov. — Naša mlada čla. Steffie Novak se zdravi v bolnišnici, ker si je roko zlomila in dobila še druge poškodbe pri padcu v kleti. Vsem želimo kar najhitrejšo okrevanje.
Naša blag. Frances Skul in družina se je vozila 2 tedna po Californlji in obiskala svoje sorodnike.
Želimo, da bi dobile mnogo novih članic in tako nadomestimo' tiste, katere smrt jemlje od nas.
Vse lepo pozdravljene in na svidenje na puranovi G. B. party v cerkveni dvorani pri Mariji Pomagaj.

Št. 7, Forest City, Pa. — Zopet se ogllašam v naši priljubljeni Zarji. Najprej vas vabim, da se udeležite naše prihodnje seje, ki se bo vršila v nedeljo dne 4. dec. ob 2 uri popoldne pri tajnici, Josephine Gostisha,
1010 N. Main Str. Rade bi imele lepo udeležbo. Naše	seje so	kratice	in
zanimive in škoda	bi	bila	če bi	se
Članice ne udeležile v večjem številu, kakor včasih. Pred sejo smo molile za bolne članice in	po	seji	pa za,	pokojne sestre. Lepo	je	bilo	slišati,	ko
smo vse soglasno priporočale Bogu naše pokojne. Sedaj pa je udeležba bolj mala, zato to kar opustimo, kar ni pravilno. Bog je rekel, kadar je več oseb zbranih pri molitvu, mu je to bolj dopadljivo.
Dne 27. jan. bo poteklo 40 let odkar je bila ustanovljena naša podr., zato je važno, da pridete na decem-bersko sejo, da se pogovorimo glede praznovanja tega pomembnega jubileja. Gotovo čitate v Zarji kako so druge podr. aktivne, zato bi bilo želeti, da se zdramimo tudi me in kaj dobrega ukrenemo, kakor tudi glede odbora za prihodnje leto.
Iz bolnišnice so se vrnile naše sestre Gertrude Urbas, Fannie Kavšek in Alice Krall, kakor tudi njena mama Mary Košir. Vse se sedaj zdravijo na domu. Mrs. Krall je prestala težko operacijo. Tudi ona je naša dobra članica in redno plača v naprej. Tudi Mrs. Mary Oblak in Jennie Sham-ro sta še vedno bolane. Hčerke jima strežejo na domu. Naj vas Bog vse blagoslovi z dobrim zdravjem.
Mrs. Mary Miklowicic in hčer Mary sta že več tednov pri hčerki Mrs. Ann Ferraro in njeni družini v Newark, N. J., kjer so Ferrerovi kupili lep dom.
Congratulations naši novi članici odraslega oddelka Miss Frances Gerchman, ki uči v High School v Waymart, Pa.

Št. 10, Cleveland, O. — Ker se od naše podr. št. 10 že dalje časa nismo oglasile, zato napišem par vrstic sedaj ko so počitnice za nami. Kar nekam mrzla burja pihlja okrog vogala, listje rumeni in odpada. Zunaj na deželi je narava prav krasna, drevesa so zlatorumena in rdeča. Škoda, da bo mraz vso to krasoto v kratkem popolnoma uničil, toda kaj hočemo, saj je tudi človeško življenje enako naravi; vse mine.
Pri naši podr. gre prav lepo vse po starem naprej. Naša tajnica, Mrs. Mary Comlah ima največ skrbi, da gre vse lepo naprej.
V	času poletnih mesecov, smo izgubile kar 5 članic, te so: Agnes Krall, Josephine Kovačič, Roso Gustetič, Jennie Trampuš in Mary Pančur. Bog jim daj večni mir in pokoj. Preostalim naše globoko sožalje.
Rojstne dneve so obhajale v septembru: Mrs. Urbas in Mrs. Josephine Brusich. Čestitke.
Najlepše pozdravljam vse čltatelje Zarje in članice Zveze širom Amerike.

ZLATA POROKA
Št. 10, Cleveland, O. — Po dolgem času se zopet oglašam v naši prilju-bleni Zarji. — Dne 24. julija je naSa dolgoletna članica, Lojzka Čebular s soprogom obhajala zlato poroko. Slavnost se je pričela s sv. mašo v cerkvi Sv. Jeroma ob veliki udeležbi družine in prijateljev. Vsa družina je prejela sv. obhajilo. In pred obhajilo mizo se je slavljenka zahvalila Bogu, da ju je ohranil pri življenju, da sta dočakala ta slavnostni dan.
V	slovenskem domu na Holmes Ave. so imeli slavnostno kosilo. — Slavljenca se želita iskreno zahvaliti vsem, ki so se udeležili njune slavnosti, vsem za kiasna darila in čestitke, kateri sta prejela mnogo od vseh strani. Vsem prisrčna hvala.
Podružnica čestita zlatoporočence-ma, saj njuna pot ni bila vedno z rožcami posuta, pa vendar sta vzgojila lepo družino. Otroci ju imajo zelo radi, kar je največji blagoslov za starše. Ob zvokih godbe se je ra-vila kar najlepša, vesela slovenska ohcet. Naša podr. je bila dobro zastopana.
Naša preds. Anna Markovich je srečno prestala operacijo. Zdravje se ji počasi vrača. Vse ji želimo, da bi se hitro pozdravila in prišla nazaj v svojo službo. In tudi vsem drugim bolnim članicam želim ljubega zdravja. To leto smo izgubile že veliko članic, treba se bo potruditi, da bi pridobile novih in mladih, ki bi nadomestile vrzeli.
Obenem bi rada prosila in posebno povabila vse članice, da bi se v večjem številu udeleževale naših sej, ker nas redno pride le pešcica skupaj in še te so ene in iste. Prosim vas, da bi prišle vsaj sedaj ko bodo dolgi večeri in pri nas je vedno luštno. Pozdrav vsem.

MR. & MRS. ČEBULAR
Št. 13, San Francisco, Cal. — Poletna doba je minula v mnogih državah, toda pri nas v Cal. smo sredi lepega indijanskega poletja. Zvečer je sicer megla nad mestom, a zju traj sonce prežene bele pajčolane meglic, da se zelena trata v parku les-keče v milijonih biserov, kakor mavrica na obzorju.
V	nedeljo ‘18. sept. smo imeli Zve-zin dan. Po sv. maši v slovenski cerkvi, smo se zbrali v slov. domu, kjer nam je naša drž. preds., Rose Škoff nudila izvrsten zajutrek,, ki je bil pripravljen pod njenim spretnim nadzorstvom. Pomagale so ji njena sestre, ena izmed sester, Mrs. Lampe nam je zaigrala na harmoniko lepe slovenske poskočne. V kuhinji je vodila naša dopisovalka in pridna delavka, Frances Chiodo. Ona vam bo gotovo še sama podrobno opisala svoje vtise, posebno, še o svojem potovanju na Havajskih otokih. — Zaju-treka so se udeležile tudi naše tri častne sestre; Mary Slane, Kate Ra-dovich in Mary Rauh. Rose jim je poklonila krasne šopke orhidej. Navzoča s svojo družino je bila tudi hčerka od Rose, Mrs. Galagher, ki je zelo elegantna dama. Darovala je pecivo, šopke in cvetje za lepo okrasitev mize. Soprog prejšnje preds. g. Adami pa je daroval šunko, ki je bila res izvrstna. — Večina članic se je udeležilo skupne sv. maše, kar je napravilo lep vtis skupnosti.
Govorile smo tudi o članku v Zarji, ki ga je spisala naša ustanoviteljica ga. Prisland. Članek je o seji pred mnogimi leti, prav duhovito dovtipen, saj kaj sličnega se je marsikateremu izmed nas pripetilo prva leta v inozemstvu.
Naša cerkvica je bila nabito polna ob birmi, katero je imel prezvišeni nadškof ljubljanski, dr. Jožef Pogačnik. Slovesnosti so se udeležili tudi mnogi slovenski duhovniki iz raznih krajev.
Father Vodušek vedno povdarjajo, da moramo veliko čitati in si tako širiti obzorje. Sedaj pa dobim pismo iz Slovenije, kjer mi nečakinje pišejo v angleščini in vem, da znajo še par drugih jezikov. V šolah imajo veliko učenja ter vedo mnogo tudi o naši zgodovini. Res radi kritiziramo mladino, a se mnogokrat izkaže, da so posebno še dekleta zelo izobražena. Pač imajo večjo možnost in priliko učenja, kakor pa smo jih me imele v mladih letih.
Naj ob koncu izrečem najlepšo hva-
lo	naši Rose za lep dan, ki ga je s svojo prisrčno ljubeznivostjo ustva-vila. Zahvala tudi naši ustanoviteljici, ge. Prisland za lepo pismo naši podr. ter enako urednici Zarje, ge. Corinne Leskovar. — Naj še omenim, našo recording secretary, Margaret Fager, ki se je z Rose najbolj trudila za uspeh Zvezinega dne in dobila je vse dobitke. Še enkrat njej in vsem prisrčna hvala.
OBISK NADŠKOFA POGAČNIKA V WASHINGTON
Naše mesto in posebno podružnica št. 103 je v zadnjih dveh dnevih septembra in prvega dne v oktobru bila počasččena z obiskom jubljnskega nadškofa dr. Jožefa.
V	četrtek 29. septembra je skupina washingtonskih Slovencev pozdravila g. nadškofa na letališču in podpredsednica št. 103 gospa Nika Kovačič je izrekla visokemu gostu dobrodošlico v imenu našega društva. V petek 30. sept. si je prevzvišeni ogledoval naše mesto in njegove znamenitosti kot so Capitol, Washington Monument, Library of Congress in druge pomembne zgradbe.
Y	soboto 1. oktobra smo imeli Slovensko službo božjo v kripti Narodnega svetišča Brezmadežnega Spočetja, ki je največja cerkev Amerike in ena največjih cerkva na svetu. Sv. mašo je daroval g. nadškof ob asistenci g. dr. Blatnika, g. Slapšaka in g. Ceglarja. Pridiga,, v kateri nas je g. nadškof pozival k trdnemu zaupanju v Marijino Srce, kateremu smo se tudi Slovenci posvetili med vojno in po	vojni še	enkrat, je	bila res prekrasna.
Bila je prav na	mestu v	Marijinem	svetišču, ki	so ga
zgradili ameriški katoličani in v katerem so tudi prelepe kapelice nekaterih narodnih skupina kot Poljakov in Litvancev. G.	nadškof je razvijal	misel, da je	ravno
za oktober sv. oče pozval	katoličane	vsega sveta	k mo-
litvi za mir, mi pa naj pri tem dodamo tudi molitve za slovensko domovino. Udeležba je bila kar zadovoljiva, saj se nas je kljub nalivu zbralo nad sto iz Washingtona in okolice.
Po sv. maši smo se zbrali v prostorih Katoliške univerze v bližini cerkve, kjer je imel vsakdo priliko govorili z visokim gostom in se z njim prav po domače pomeniti. G. dr. Blatnik je predstavil wasliingtonske Slovence, ki
so doživeli obisk kot edina slovenska skupina v Ameriki, ki nima svoje župnije niti ne slovenskega duhovnika, pa zna kljub temu lepo po slovensko odgovarjati pri sv. maši in peti slovenske cerkvene pesmi. G. nadškof je v nagovoru povedal, da nas vidi kar veliko in da nas je dovolj, da se lahko zbiiamo in gojimo slovensko družabnost. Povedal je tudi, da naj se za usodo Cerkve v Sloveniji ne bojimo preveč, da je naše ljudstvo ohranilo veto, kljub temu, da niso vsi verni, in da je zadnja leta kar velko duhovniških poklicev, ki sedaj dosegajo predvojno število, da pa je največja težava s prostori, ker Cerkev nima poslopij, ki bi jih nujno potrebovala za vzgojo duhovskega naraščaja.
Razšli smo se potrjeni v veri in v duhovni povezanosti s slovensko domovino, g. nadškof pa je nadaljeval svojo pot v Bridgeport, Comn. Veseli smo bili, da je g. nadškof mogel obiskati naše mesto, ki je bilo poprej vedno pozabljeno pri vseh obiskih. Zahvala za to gre predvsem naši predsednici Miss Irene Planinšek in odboru naše podružnice, ki je obisk organizirala, in še posebno Rev. dr. Johnu Prahu, ki je bil g. nadškofu vodnik po mestu ter je poskrbel, da je visoki gost lahko stanoval v samostanu karmeličanov.
Washington je tako postal ena najvažnejših postojank vseh Amerikancev slovenskega porekla in upamo, da bo to svoje mesto tudi obdržal. Prav podružnica Slovenske ženske zveze je bila prva organizacija, ki je začela orati ledino v glavnem mestu Amerike in prihodnja konvencija naše organizacije se bo vršila prihodnje leto v našem mestu in bo kot taka prva konvencija kakega slovenskega društva tukaj, ker so se doslej druge organizacije držale ob strani in se niso zanimale za napredek Amerikancev slovenskega porekla v ameriški prestolici.

Približujejo se Vsi Sveti, dan posvečen spominu naših dragih. Misli bodo romale domov na grobove, med cvetje, med lučke na gomilah in v srcu bo odmevala pesem:
Blagor mu, ki se spočije, v črni zemlji v Bogu spi; lepše sonce njemu sije, lepša zarja rumeni.

Št. 14, Euclid, O. — Naša oktober-ska seja je bila kar dobro obiskana. Naš>a kartna prireditev je tudi zanimiva. Vse smo bile radovedne kako je uspel ta naš večer, zato se nas mnogo udeležile seje. Preds. Thresa Skur je	nam prav	veselo	poročala,
da je bil	lep uspeh.	Rekla	je,	da so
v začetku prav počasi prihajali in se je že bala, da se ne bo obneslo, toda ob določenm času so prišli kar v trumah in v kratkem so bili na-poljneni vsi sedeži in je bilo potrebno postaviti še nekaj postranskih miz.
Podpreds., Mary Stražišar se je pa lepo zahvaljevala članicam, ker so bile tako pridne, nekatere so delale ves dan v nedeljo, ko je še bilo veliko dela	do začetka	ob 3 pop.	in do
sedmih zvečer. Tudi	preds.	se	je za-
hvaliila vsaki posebej. Posebno se moramo zahvaliti Mrs. Kral in Fakult, ki sta spretno oddajale dobitke, ker jih je bilo prav veliko.
Dne IG. okt. pa smo se udeležile kosila v Mentor v gostilno Mr. Medved. Mrs. Medved je naša članica.
Bolane so sestre: Mrs. Strlikar, ki so jo morali odpeljati v bolnico in Mrs. Josephine Blatnik, ki tudi ne more nikamor zaradi bolečih nog. Priporočamo jih v molitev, da jim Bog nakloni ljubo zdravje.
Mož naše članice Mrs. Šmit je pred kratkim umrl. Naj v miru počiva. Žalujoči ženi in družini izrekamo naše sožalje.
Sejo smo zaključile z molitvijo za vse bolne članice. Lep pozdrav vsem na vse strani. Antonija Sustar
Št. 15, Cleveland, O. — Počitnice so minule, seje so se zopet pričele. Na septembrski seji smo pričakovale mnogo več članic, kakor pa jih je bilo navzočih, saj je bilo krasno vreme.
V blagajno so darovale Mary Zabukovec in Ana Glivar. Srčna hvala obema.
Dobile smo tikete za prodajati. Ves dobiček bo šel za stroške delegatinj in kar jih bomo več prodale bo pa za našo blagajno, ker druge prireditve nimamo, toda stroški so vedno.
Pričela se je kampanja za nove članice. Potrudimo se, da bi jih vsaj nekaj novih pridobile, ker smo jih že precej izgubile.
V bolnici se nahaja Elenor Jones in Verona Škufca. Obema želimo naj jima ljubi Bog in Marija skoraj zdravje podelita in vsem bolnim članicam.
Že danes pišem za decembersko sejo, ki se bo vršila 14. dec., ker včasih pride Zarja po seji. Vse članice vabim na to letno sejo, ker imamo veliko stvari za ukreniti in volitev odbora. Po seji bo Božičnica. V septembru smo obhajale 3 mesečne rojstne dneve:	Helen	Mirtel, Frances
Lindič, Rozi Lavše, Jennie Resnik. Mirtel je prinesla sirov cake in kavo, Lindič sirov štrudel in Resnik calce Srčna hvala vsem.
Najlepše sesterske pozdrave vsem skupaj.

Št. 20, Joliet, III. — Po več mesecih poletnega oddiha, je preds. Emma Planinšek zopet pozdravila lepo število članic na seji. Mnoge so nam povedale o svojih doživetjih v času oddiha, ko ni bilo seje; nekatere so bile kar doma, druge so potovale, toda glavno je, da so preživele te mesece v zdravju.
Na počitnicah se je nahajala po daljšem času, Miss Irene Planinšek, preds.. št. 103 hčerka naše predsednice. Njen obisk tokrat je bil bolj kratek, ker ima v VVashingtonu polne roke dela. Tudi je pripovedovala o pripravah za Zvezino konvencijo.
Te dni se je poročila Judy Hofer hčerka, Berthe in Freda in vnukinja pred. Planinšek. Njen ženin je Jack Williamson. Tudi n e ča k i n j a naše preds., Mildred Lukančič se je poročila. Vzela je Kent Monroe. Ona je hčerka članice Pauline Lukancich in soproga Louis.
Vabimo članice, da obiščete čla. Anna Purlin, ki se že dalje časa nahaja v Pleasant Center Nursing Home.
Čestitke Mrs. Skubic, ki je častno zastopala Coal City kot najstarejša članica in državljanka na njihovem “Home Coming”.
Blagajničarka Joe Sumic, je obširno poročala o letošnili kegljaških skupinah v Rival parku. Kegljajo vsak pondeljek ob 7 uri zvečer. Članice ste vabljene, da jih obiščete. Te dni je tudi naš lokalni list, Herald News prinesel obširno poročilo (pol strani) o delovanju naše Zvezine skupine, ki je ena najstarejših v Rival parku. Priobčili so tudi sliko prvih keglja-čic in opisom njihovega delovanja, kakor tudi zgodovina podr. To je gotovo v ponos kegljačicam in celi podružnici.
čestitke Mr. in Mrs. Frank E. Terlep iz Oakland Ave., ki sta prav slovesno obhajala zlato poroko. Slovesnost se je vršila najprej v cerkvi in nato so imeli “open house” na domu v krogu številnih sorodnikov in prijateljev. Mrs. Terlep je bila mnogo časa naša blagajničarka in aktivna pri raznih društvih. Imajo sina in tri poročene hčerke. Mr. Terlep je po dolgih letih prvič šel v cerkev na praznovanje obletnice svoje poroke, ker si je pred več leti zlomil nogo pri padcu.
Bolj na tihem sta praznovala 43 letnico poroke Mike in Anna Papež. Sin “Miki”, vodi pogrebni zavod v družbi Dans pogrebnikov. Ena hčer-ka z družino tudi živi v bližini.
Vsi želimo, da bi oba para dočakala še mnogo let, da bi praznovali zdravi prihodnjih deset let in še več.
Vsem članicam, katere ste med poletjem zaostale s plačilom svojih prispevkov pri Zvezi, ste prošene, da čimprej poravnate. Tajnica ne bo za nobeno več zalagala.
Vsem članicam pa želim mnogo zdravja v tem jesenskem času teina svidenje na prihodnji seji.

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Naše seje so bolj slabo obiskane, čeprav bi bilo važno, da bi prišle v velikem številu, ker imamo več važnih stvari za urediti. Že sedaj vas lepo vabim in lipam, da boste prišle vse na decem-bersko sejo, ki je tudi letna seja in bomo volile novi odbor za prihodnje leto. Imele bomo tudi izmenjavo daril in Božičnico, zato naj vsaka prinese darilo v vrednosti enega dolarja za Izmenjavo. Po seji bomo imele prigrizek in zabavo, zato pridite v lepem številu. To bo 4. decembra popoldne. — Važjno je tudi, da izvolite novi odbor po vaši volji in sklenete vse glede pravil. Tudi prosim, da bi tiste, ki ste v zaostanku z ases-mentom, poravnale, da tako uredimo knjige za pregled nadzornemu odboru.
Žal imamo več žalostnih, kakor pa veselih novic. Iskreno sožalje izrekamo Mary Peletič, ki žaluje za svojo sestro Josephine Brongel, ki je preminula po par mesecih bolezni in to v najlepših letih, stara samo 53 let. — Za svojim bratom Joseph Brinovec, žaluje njegova sestra Angela Končal; nadalje žaluje Maybel Strohni za svojo ojo materjo Elizabeth Piška. — Vsem sorodnikom in družinam naše sožalje. Pokojnim pa naj sveti večna luč in naj počivajo v miru.
V	bolnišnici se je nahajala sestra Jennie Pohar, ki ji želimo hitrega zdravja, kakor tudi vsem drugim bolnim članicam.
Na rokah še imam nekaj kuharskih knjig. Če katera želi, bom rade volje prišla na dom.
Ker se bližamo lepim božičnim praznikom, zato Vam želim Vesele Božične praznike in zdravo Novo leto.

Št. 26, Pittsburgh Pa. — Naša seja v sept. je bila prav lepo obiskana. Ker v jun. in jul. nismo imele seje, zato so članice bile kar vesele, da se zopet sestanejo. Na seji smo raz-motrivale glede Pensilvanijskega dneva, ker je bila drž. preds. za Penna, Mary Tomšič v skrbeh, katera podr. bo prevzala za prihodnje leto 1967.
Sklenile smo, da bo naša podr. v Pgh. imela to čast. V maju bomo imele Luncheon Party, kakor vsako leto na tretji torek v maju.
V	avgustu smo se veselo pripravljali s Frianovimi in Flajnikovo vso družino, da bomo šli z busom in auto-mobili v Cleveland na poroko njihove sestrične, Marie Draz z John Mu-kavec. Z možem sva šla že v petek na dom Joe in Barbara Draz, vsi drugi pa so imeli priti v soboto 27. avgusta k poroki Ali zgodilo se je, kakor pravijo: Človek obrača, Bog pa obrne. In tako je imel John Flajnilc vse pripravljeno za na pot in je rekel svoji sinahi Katrine Flajnik, da bodo rano vstali, da ne bodo zamudili poroke, toda ga je zadela srčna kap tisto noč. John je bil dober pri-
jatelj naše družine in sosed še iz starega kraja. Bil je zelo priljubljen pri vseh. ki so ga poznali.— Toda to še ni bilo konec vse nereče, ampak tudi Barbaro Draz je zadel mrtvoud in je umrla drugi dan, 28. avg. In tako smo šli od poroke na dva pogreba. Naše globoko sožalje družinam, pokojnima poa sveta nebesa. — Vama, Marie in John Mukavec pa mnogo let veselega življenja. — Pok. John Flajnik je bil oče naše čla. Ann Frlan in tast Kathrine Flajnik. Ta dogodek nam bo ostal trajno v spominu.
Upam, da so se naše bolne članice vse pozdravile in nas bodo obiskale na naših sejah. Vas pozdravljam, Mary Bahor, big.
Št. 41, Cleveland, O. — Kljub lepemu vremenu, je bila udeležba na zadnji seji maloševilna, upamo, da bo v prihodnje boljša.
Prisrčno čestitamo ses. Mary Paulin za njen 80 letni rojstni dan. Želimo ji še mnogo let zdravja in zadovoljstva.
Že pred par meseci sta v Floridi obhajala zlato poroko Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Zakrajšek. Zlata nevesta je naša dolgoletna članica, vedno vneta za napredek podr. Ravno ob istem času je ses. Zakrajšek tako nesrečno padla, da si je zlomila nogo in roko. Tako so slavje odložili do septembra, ko sta zlatoporočenca prišla v našo metropolo, kjer sta v krogu svoje družine, sorodnikov in prijateljev praznovala zlati jubilej. Ob tem času je ses. Zakrajšek darovala lepo darilo v prid naše blagajne, za kar ji izrekamo iskreno zahvalo.
Dne 30. oktobra sta pa obhajala zlato poroko s sv. mašo v cerkvi Marije Vnebovzete, Mr. in Mrs. Louis Urbas. Zlatoporočenca sta dolgo vrsto let vodila grocerijsko trgovino na Grovenwood Ave. Zlata nevesta je naša dolgoletna vestna članica. Zlatoporočencem prav iskreno čestitamo in želimo naj jih Bog ohrani pri zdravju in zadovoljstvu še mnogo let.
Veseli nas, da se je zdravje ses. Ann Vadnal zboljšalo; želimo ji najboljšega zdravja v bodočnosti. Enako želimo vsem, katere so rahlega zdravja.
Iskreno sožalje izrekamo ses. Violi Močnik ob izgubi ljubljene mamice, ses. Anne Močnik, ki je bila naša dolgoletna članica. Globoko sožalje tudi soprogu, sinu, sorodnikom in prijateljem. Pokojna sestra pa naj sladilo sniva in večna luč naj ji sveti.
Prisrčna hvala ses. Ann Fabian, Mary Franz, Urška Janežič in Rose Strunible za dar v blagajno. Še posebno hvala ses. Rose Strumble za dar v šolninski sklad.
Po seji smo praznovale rojstni dan ses. podpredsednice, Tlierese Mihevc. Želimo ji še mnogo srečnih obletnic.
Na rokah imamo srečne listke v prid naše blagajne. Prošene ste, da
pridno sežete po njih. Naša letna seja bo 6. decembra, ravno na Miklavžev dan. Vljudno ste vabljene, da se je vse udeležite.

Št. 47, Garfield Hgts. — Važno sporočilo za vse članice: Glavna ali letna seja naše podr. se bo vrSila dne 4. decembra od 1:30 pop. v S. D. D., 10814 Prince Ave. To bo zelo važna seja, ker bomo določile smernice dela za prihodnje leto. Na dnevnem redu bodo volitve odbora in raz-motrivanje glede priporočil in načrtov delovanja za bodoče, kakor tudi priporočila za narodno konvencijo, ki se bo vršila v maju 19G7 v Washing-tonu, D. C.
Po seji bomo imele božičnico, zabavo z okrepčili in zamenjale bomo darila v vrednosti enega dol. Pripeljite s seboj tudi člane in članice mladinskega oddelka. Vse drugo bomo določile na seji.
Imamo več bolnih sester. Vem, če bi bile zdrave, bi prišle na sejo. Te so: Louise Kostelec, Mary Barbič, Uršula Strojin, Mary Lončlškar, Mary Lupšina, Josephine Meserko, Catarina Glivar in Karolina Korto-vich. Že dalje časa je v bolnišnici, resno bolana naša predsednica, Helen Tomažič in Pauline Pigot. Vsem želimo ljubega zdravja. Bog naj vam lajša trpljenje v teh nesrečnih boleznih. Vsem, ki ste imele rojstne dneve in ki boste slavile to je za avg., sept., okt. in nov., želimo vse najboljše in še na mnoga leta zdravja, srečo in veselje.

Št. 54, Warren, O. — Naša zadnja seja je bila še kar dobro obiskana. Sedaj, kakor vam je že znano se vršijo seje pri ses. Betty Vadas. Smo ji lahko hvaležnež da nas je sprejela pod streho, da nam ni treba po hišah hoditi. Vse, ki obhajate rojstne dneve, lahko kaj darujete za prigrizek, kakor smo imele navado. Vabim vse tiste, ki se bolj nerade udeležite sej, da bi prišle in ne bo vam žal, ker imamo vedno kaj zabave po seji.
Ann Volk se je morala podvreči o-peraciji, kakor tudi soprog Rose Mu-lato. Obema gre na bolje. Vsem bolnim članicam želimo ljubega zdravja.

Čestitke Zlatoporočencema!
Naša dobro poznana Mr. in Mrs. John Dolinar sta 25. sept. slavila 50 letnico zakonskega življenja s sv. mašo v cerkvi Sv. Lovrenca v Newburghu, kjer sta se zahvalila božji milosti za vse dobrote, katere sta prejela, pa tudi delila z vsakemu, ki je bil pomoči potreben.
V	družini se jima so rodile 3 hčerke in sin John. On in hčerka Josephine živita srečno s svojimi družinami. Dve hčerki dvojčki sta umrli kmalu po rojstvu. Srečna sta, ker imata zastopstvo v nebesih med an-geljčki.
Cerkveni obredi so bili ganljivi. Čestiti g. župnik Francis Baraga so jima podelili blagoslov in jima govorili o zakonskem življenju, ki ni lahko, toda s potrljenjem in božjo voljo se premosti vse težave. To je dokaz, da sta prekoračila 50 let skupnega življenja in Bog da, da bi črez 25 lt zopet prišla po diamantni blagoslov. Ob dveh pop. so Hočevar Catering Serv. servirali v SND Stanley Ave., Maple Hts. okusno kosilo. Sorodniki in prijatelji so napolnili dvorano in po okrepčilu se je pričela zabava. Zapeli smo jima tudi tisto: "Venček na glavi se . . Nato sta razrezala cake, ki ga je preskrbela sinova žena Terry.
K temu zlatemu jubileju se pridružujemo s čestitkami in voščili še za nadaljno življenje, zdravje, srečo in veselje. Bog vaju ohrani med družino, vnuki in vnukinjami, ki jih zelo ljubita.
Mrs. Antonia Dolinar je naša dolgoletna blagajničarka in skoraj 35 let v uradu, saj je pomagala ustanoviti našo podr. Vse članice vaju po zdravljamo z željo, da dočakata biserno poroko.
Bog vaju živi še na mnoga leta.

spomnila s kartico iz lepe Slovenije. Hvala ji tudi za sliko iz Nove Štifte, kjer sva bila tudi midva pred par leti ter za voščilo za moj rojstni dan. Tudi jaz želim Albini in Corinne Leskovar, naši vrli urednici še na mnoga zdrava leta, ker obe obhajate v tem času.
Smo že v mesecu novembru, ki nas opominja, da se spominjamo svojih dragih. Koliko naših sosester že počiva v miru božjem. Spomnimo se jih z molitvijo.

Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Hladni jesenski dnevi so tukaj. Dobili smo že prvo slano. Listje na drevju rumeni In že odpada in ko boste čitale te vrstice, bo verjetno že vse golo. — Naša septemberska seja je bila po-volnjo obiskana.

Št. 79, Enumclaw, Wash. — Sporočam, da smo prav lepo proslavile 35 ltenico ustanovitve naše podružnice na septeinberski seji. Bila sem prav vesela lepe udeležbe pri sestri Jennie Beaver. Hvala Jennie za okusno kosilo.
Sklenile smo, da bomo zopet imele Božičnico za otroke in Miklavža smo sporočile, da naj pride in da naj prinese kaka darila za naše male.
Članicam pa sporočamo, da naj prinesejo darilo v vrednosti $1 za izmenjavo daril. Matere pa za svoje otroke. Naša božična seja bo pri sestri Helen Chicada, dne 11. dec. Pridite v polnem številu, da bomo izvolile odbor za leto 19G7, da boste vse zadovoljne. Če ima katera prijateljico, ki še ni članica podr., naj jo pripelje, da jo sprejmemo v Zvezo in podružnico. Št. 84, New York. N. Y. — OBISK SLOVENSKEGA NADŠKOFA V N. Y. Dne . okt ,so nas obiskali ljubljanski nadškof, dr. Jožef Pogačnik v slovenski cerkvi Sv. Cirila in Metoda. Bil je lep dan in visoki cerkevni do stojanstevnik se je pripeljal v prem-stvu slovenskih duhovnikov:	Rev.
Slapšak iz Slovenije, Rev. Farkaš iz Bridegporta, Rev. Blatnik iz N. J., Rev. Jenko' in Rev. Mikullč.N&š župnik Rev. Richard Rogan, OFM je nadškofa lepo pozdravil in mlado dekle v slovenski narodni noši je podala lepo deklamcljo in poklonila g. nadškofu šopek slov. nageljnov. V cerkvi so imeli visoki gost slovesne slov. litanije in vsa cerkev jo odgovarjala, da je bilo res ganljivo, da ne bom nikoli tega dneva pozabila. Nato smo vsi šli v cerkveno dvorano, kjer so prevzvišeni nadškof, dr. Pogačnik imeli lep govor in nato prijazno odgovarjali na vsakovrstna vprašanja. Vabili so nas tudi na obisk Slovenije. Tudi jaz sem Imela čast govoriti z njimi in sem jim povedala,

da sem bila v domovini leta. 1963, ko so umrli nadškof Vovk in ko so 15. avg. oni postali nadškof. Bili smo na Brezjah, kjer so verni Slovenci molili vso noč. Takrat sem imela priložnost spregovoriti z njimi, ker moj bratranec g. Franc. Pestotnik je župnik v Loškem potoku na Dol. G. Slapšak iz Ljubljane so mi povedali, da sta hodila skupaj z mojim bratrancem v šolo ter bila istega leta, 1942 posvečena.
Nadškof dr. Pogačnik so odpotova-
li	nazaj v Slovenijo 5. okt. in upam, da so odnesli lepe vtise iz slovenskih naselbin Amerike. Jaz sem v tej dežli že od leta 1912 in v tem času smo imeli obiske 3 slov. škofov: prvi je bil nadškof dr. Jeglič, nato škof dr. Rožman in sedaj nadškof dr. Pogačnik.
O srebrni maši našega priljubljenega g. župnika Richard Rogana, bom poročala prihodnjič.
Naša podružnica je priredila lep izlet z naročenim busom na Greenwood Lake. Zelo lepo smo se imeli in vsi so bili zadovodjni z zelo dobro postrežbo. Več nas je obiskalo tudi cerkev Brezmadežnega Spočetja in botat ride je vzelo eno uro po 9 milj dolgem jezeru. Na obali je mnogo hiš, kakor na našem Bledu. Mnogo se jih je priglasilo, pa ni bilo dosti za 2 busa, ki se mora naročiti en mesec v naprej. Ses. Mary Judež, ki je lani zadela potico, je letos prinesla kar dve. Prisrčna ji hvala. Seveda smo pogrešale moža, kakor tudi Mr. Lenarčiča, ki je umrl 5. sept. Oba sta bila dobiia družabnika. Naše iskreno sožalje obema. Tudi me ju bomo pogrešale, saj sta lani še tako lepo prepevala na busu.
Več članic je bolanih, da ne morejo na sejo. Vsem želim hitro pozdravljene. Priporočam članicam, da bi obiskale naše bolne sestre, ali pa Jim pošljite bodrilne karte.
Vse vljudno vabim mi našo letno sejo, ki se bo vršila 20. dec. v Bob Station Grill, G695 Forest Avenue, Ridgewood. Imele bomo dosti stvari za razmotrivati in izvoliti moramo odbor za leto 1967, ker pozimi zaradi slabega vremena, ne bo seje. Več članic je izrazilo željo, da bi šle na konvencijo v Washington, D.C. Tudi o tem bomo razgovarjale na glavni seji.

Št. 96, Universal, Pa. — Pozdravljene članice SŽZ! Namenila sem se, da nekaj napišem v našo priljubljeno Zarjo, ker vem, da jo vsaka članica hitro pregleda in prebere in tudi nečlani radi pogledajo kaj je novega. Jesen je tukaj in vidi se na vrtu in vsepovsod, da ne bo več dol go ko nas bo obiskala zima in članice se bomo grele pri peči.
Na seji v avgustu je bilo veliko številna udeležba. Lepo se zahvalimo

nedeljo dne 25 septembra smo članice Slovenske ženske zveze podružnice v Washingtonu organizirale piknik na kako uro oddaljenem prostoru od Washingtona. Z dnevom, tretjem po vrstnem redu v jeseni, nismo imele največje sreče. Do malega je deževalo že ves teden preje. V soboto se je malo segrelo in nam samo dalo dobre upe. V nedeljo zjutraj pa nas je dež zbudil v posteljah. Uradni pričetek piknika je bil ob eni url popoldne, malica oziroma hrana pa se je začela deliti malo čez tri popoldne.
Dobri del tega dneva, kljub slabemu vremenu, pa je bila lepo zbrana družba, ki se je udeležila piknika. Prostor, kjer smo imeli piknik, je zelo prijazen. Umetno urejen rezervat- z vodo daje še bolj veličastno sliko s tem, ko se sliši vodni slap ali padec. Svet sam je lepo hribčkast in obdan na spodnji strani z majhnim potočkom. Veliko visokih, zelenih dreves daje streho vrtnim mizam, katere so porazdeljene po vsem pro-

Posebno lepo vabim vse članice, da se gotovo udeležite seje dne 4. decembra na mojem domu v nedeljo ob po dveh (1:30) popoldne. Za rešiti imamo več važnih zadev, zato pridite na to pomembno letno sejo vse. Vsaka naj prinese darilo v vrednosti $1 za izmenjavo daril.
Na bolniški listi imamo več članic, ki so: Jerica Schiflar, Franca Oblak St., Jean Oswald, Mrs. Veli-čič, Mrs. Roth in Ančka Jelovčan, ki pa se je vrnila iz bolnice. Vsem želimo kar najhitrejše okrevanje.
Sedaj ko bo bolj hladno vreme, u-pam, da bomo imele kaj več obiska na naših sejah. Vse tudi lepo prosim, da pogledate vaše plačilne knjižice, če imate plačan asesment. Če ste zaostale, dajte poravnati, da ne bo treba tajnici opominjati in zalagati.

Št. 100, Fontana, Cal. — Hvala vam sestre, da ste se udeležile seje v lepem številu. Upam, da sedaj ko bodo daljši večeri, da vas pride še več ln bo bolj luštno. Po seji bomo imele malo zabave in dober prigrizek na čast slavljenkam rojstnih dnevov.
Ta mesec so praznovale: Mary Kovačič, Cecilija Horzen, Frances Kapel in sestra Pavšek. Hvala vam za vaše okusne delikatese. Želimo vam, da bi v zdravju in sreči še mnogo let slavile svoje obletnice rojstva.
Hvala vsem, ki ste darovale in pomagale za card party. Posebna zahvala gre naši predsednici, ki je spekla in prodala več štrudelnov ter
štoru. Prižgali smo ogenj v velik kamnit kamin, ki je še posebno o-kraševal in poživljal naše zavedne Slovence in prijatelje Slovencev.
Da je res toliko ljudi skupaj zbranih pa se je najlepše videlo, ko si je vsak vzelp prigrizek, saj vrste kar ni hotelo biti konca. Vsa pripravljena hrana je bila izvrstna in slovenska, saj o klobasah in poticah ne moremo govoriti, če nismo Slovenci. Tudi za pijačo vseh vrst je bilo dobro preskrbljeno. Ker v Washingtonu še nimamo tako velikega števila članic, kot druge starejše podružnice, lahko odkritosrčno vsaki članici posebej čestitam za veliko požrtvovalnost pri samih pripravah ali pa pri tem, da se je piknika udeležila ali pa pripeljala svojega znance na piknik.
Kot sem že omenila je bil dan hladen, celo deževen od časa do časa, pri srcih pa smo bili vsi razživeti in prisrčno povezani z veseljem. Šele na večer smo se začeli razhajati proti svojim domovom.

Sprejele smo novo social member, sestro Anna Pegan, ki sta se z možem Johnom naselila pri nas. Prišla sta iz Livermore, Cal., kjer imata sina z družino. Z našo novo družabno članico, Ančko se poznam še izza mladih let, ko smo še živeli v Clevelandu, smo se večkrat videli na raznih prireditvah in zabavah. Tudi v starem kraju smo živeli blizu. Kličemo ji veselo Dobrodošla med nami in upam, da se vama bo tukaj dopadlo.
Bolne so še, sestra Peri in sestra Ustar ter sestra Zdravje in slišala sem, da so odpeljali v bolnišnico sestro Strnad. Želimo vsem, da bi z božjo pomočjo bile kmalu zdrave.
Prečitano je bilo pismo iz glavnega urada, ko poročajo, da bo SŽZ Imela konvencijo v Washingtonu, D. C. od 24. do 28. maja ter je gl. urad daroval $500 za nagrade in poslale so nam tiketov po $1. Prva nagrada bo $300 druga dva pa po $100 od tega denarija za stroške. Vožnjo pa plačajo iz centralne blagajne. Več pojasnil v tem oziru še pozneje. Želim vam srečo.
Sklepale smo tudi za Božičnico. Vse ostane kakor po navadi. Za meso gre iz blagajne, drugo pa prinese vsak nekaj, saj smo imele se vedno vsega v izobilu.
V	novembru bodo volitve ter prosim, da se udeležite v polnem številu. Po seji bomo imele zabavo z okrepčilom.
Če katera ve za kako bolno članico, naj sporoči tajnici, ali predsednici ter prosim, da se jih obišče.
Želim vsem članicam od blizu ln daleč, da jih ljubi Bog In Marija obdarujeta z ljubim zdravjem.

This prayer has been recited in Latin at Catholic burials for centuries. Unless you were a student of Latin, the beauty of this prayer was not realized until the Church’s recent translations.
November being the month of the poor souls each of us knows very well that death awaits us. Whether young or old God chooses the time when He wrishes us to join Him.
Doing God’s work here on earth is a preparation for our future in the next world, known as Heaven. Heaven is a place of perfect happiness; a place where there is no sorrow, tears, mourning and death; a place where the justice we are denied here and our deeds that are not appreciated will be rewarded with Joy-eternal.
In the meantime and especially every November, remember the poor souls in purgatory with your prayers.

What president of the United States proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day? An editress, Sarah Halo, had been promoting in her columns of Lady’s Book this idea.
The custom of offering gratitude to God for the harvest and other blessings was a tradition with Americans, one going back to the days of the Plymouth colony. Yet before Lincoln’s administration there had been no regular annual proclamation by a US president. For fifteen years Mrs. Hale had been promoting this idea and then in 18G3, she appealed to President Lincoln for a proclamation setting aside the last Thursday in November as a national Thanksgiving.
Five days after receiving Mrs. Hale’s appeals, President Lincoln’s proclamation began by drawing attention to “bounties which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come,” and he reminded Americans of "the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.”
And on t his first presidentially-proclaimed Thanksgiving day, Thursday, November 2(5, 1SG3, Sarah Hale in her Philadelphia home found her long ambition satisfied.
As you celebrate this national holiday, offer this simple Grace of Thanksgiving:
