Lemont Slovenian Culture Center Sets November Opening

Memories of Beautiful Sights in Slovenia
The four years it took to establish the Slovenian Cultural Center in Lemont, Illinois will be celebrated in November at a gala weekend party featuring the best music, talent, entertainment and artists possible in North America, the building committee, says. Leaders from the civic and cultural world will be invited and special programs will be held during the two days with the emphasis on Slovenian-American unity.
The impetus for this celebration has come from the people themselves, the workers who have been tirelessly giving their time and skills to the completion of the interior of the Center and who have promised to get it done by this fall. “It’s a miracle of diligence,” says SCC president Martin Hozjan. “Each day there are from 10 to 15 workers in the hall, doing their best precise work to get it done so that we can all be proud and start using this building,” he said. The men report that state and county inspectors visiting the construction site are amazed at the sound and skilled construction which has been accomplished without any delays.
The beautiful exterior, following a classical form and situated on one level, is enhanced by the many gracious appointments inside. A large and airy banquet hall is crowned by a stage ready for all kinds of performances. A smaller hall is just right for allpurpose use, including classes for the children and adults, movies and video screening and meetings of local societies. > A library will be stocked with books and periodicals, inviting all who are interested to come in and browse.
Surrounded outdoors by the beautiful grounds of the Slovenian Franciscan Fathers’ “St. Mary’s Hills,” the Lemont location is well-known to many visitors and pilgrims for the past 75 years. The Fathers have maintained the grounds with the miniature Lake Bled, Lourdes Grotto, Rosary Hill and picnic grounds. “The outdoors and its familiar beauty is certainly a contributing factor to the magnificence of this property,” said Hozjan.
The Slovenian Cultural Center is, therefore, announcing the dates of November 18 and 19 for the Celebration of
Slovenian Unity and the Grand Opening weekend in Lemont. All Slovenians, their families and friends, and all representatives of communities and organizations are invited to attend. “We will try to do everything we can to make everyone happy and proud,” said Hozjan. “A large committee is now hard at work making all the arrangements and welcomes everyone with ideas and a volunteer spirit to join us.”
The first part of the committee’s work is to plan a very special souvenir book which will be a treasure for everyone to read, telling the history of the Slovenian Cultural Center, its people and its work. Pictures and articles on Slovenia and Slovenian-Americans will be featured. The committee is offering the following advertising space: Full page at $500, half page at $250, Quarter page at $125, One-eighth page at $75. Patrons at one line (a name) are $10. Another way the committee suggests to participate is to become a member of the Slovenian Cultural Center. You can do this by making a donation and/or contributing to the Lipa Tree of Life, a symbolic “Lipa” (Linden tree) that will be placed prominently in the Center. The “Lipa” will have the names of Slovenians throughout the USA who wish to be remembered on its individual leaves. One, two and three line engravings are available on the individual heart-shaped leaves costing $1,500 for gold, $1,000 for silver and $500 for a bronze leaf. The Lipa Tree will be completed at a later date, therefore there is still time to order your message. Donors have been most kind in their comments such as: “We want our folks to be remembered,” or “we want our children to know that we were a part of the Slovenian community in America.”
All supporters and donors names will be listed in the souvenir book.
The two day celebration weekend will be crowned by a special liturgical service on Sunday when many Slovenian religious leaders are expected (Continued on page 2)

Quick impressions of Slovenia: Exchange rate was about 110 tolars for $ 1; beer in village gostilna $1 and in Ljubljana $1.50; while in Frankfurt it was $4 a glass. There’s a light beer made by Union Pivo called Uni Lite; 1 dip Hagen Daas yogurt in Frankfurt $1.50; Mount Vogel restaurant $4.50 for sausage and kraut with a slab of their wonderful crusty bread; more casinos in Bled as well as several other cities.
Grafitti beginning to appear on city walls; fewer people are smoking; young folks, especially, are ecologically minded; Slovenians driving more expensive cars; about half the cars on the road drive with lights on during daylight hours. More toys and colorful selection of children’s clothing available in stores with price about the same as here.
An ice machine is available for guests in Union Hotel’s 4th floor; more excellent Alpine style ensembels than ever; lots of road construction especially in Ljubljana, but thankfully no orange barrels.
Ljubljana’s Mestni Trg (market place) also undergoing renovation; village ladies selling bouquets of fragrant lily-of-the-valley along Tromostov bridge for 60 tolars (554); housewives buying out a new product in the supermarket.
Hit-Mix which makes super krofe (donuts) or potica with just a few extra ingredients; not only do supermarkets sell instant polenta (corn meal mush) they now have Instant Ajdove Zgancil. Mass on Sundays have good sized crowds with many young couples with
their children; more and larger trucks on their highways.
Women are fashionably dressed and it’s still a rarity to see a woman in slacks; buzz cuts are in for the young fellas; packets of menthol scented Kleenex for anyone with the sniffles; real estate salespeople have become organized within the past 3-4 years.
Normally homes were passed on from generation to generation or sold by owners with ads in newspapers; brilliant red wild poppies along with other wild flowers in golds, purples and whites in the fields which will be mowed for hay. Cup of kava 604; double capuccino $2; ice cream in Bled and Ljubljana 554 a dip; McDonalds in Ljubljana for a single cheeseburger, small fries and small coke $2.99.
May 15 was the start of a most memorable trip to Slovenia - a 10-day Kollander Travel 60/80 Birthday Bash hosted by Walter Ostanek celebrating his 60th and Frank Yankovic his 80th along with Tony Petkovšek.
On this trip our group dined on some of the tastiest food found in Slovenia: at Gostilna Ančka Sencur we feasted on a meal of several meats, vegetables, then with Ancka’s famous buckwheat adjove walnut and cheese štruklje smothered in buttered bread crumbs. In Kal and Pivka, in Cerknica we visited the home of Frank Yankovic’s parents and were welcomed by his relatives with more refreshments and goodie. And more music at a local gostilna where we lunched on hot chicken noodle soup and more cheese štruklje which came with a large dollop of whipped
cream and a drizzle of chocolate. What a surprisingly delicious combination! As Frank had promised, “These are some of the lightest štruklje you’ve ever tasted.”
On the Adriatic seaside in Izola we dined on a heaping platter of grilled trout, fried squid and shrimp at the famous Tri Vidove restaurant. Then it was on to the Hotel Riviera where Primorski Fantje performed their rousing melodies including their latest hit “Amore, Amore.”
En route to Hotel Sava in Rogaška Slatina, we stopped at Logarska Dolina at Kovinotehna Pension for lunch on tasty venison goulash as we were entertained by the soothing sounds of the zither or citre. At the Hotel Sava we were met with more refreshments as we received an orientation of the extensive facilities available at this large resort. Many of us signed on for a relaxing half-hour body massage.
Our next adventure took us to Selo near Trebenje where we visited with relatives of Walter Ostanek and Tony Petkovšek, who discovered last year that they were first cousins on their mother’s side. We were welcomed with homemade potica, cookies, cake, prsut, bread and refreshments. Here we saw the home of Tony’s grandfather, Ignac Golob, which was built in the 1400s. In Catez we saw the home of Walter’s mother and the bed in which she was born.
In Rakovnik by Šentrupert at Gostilna Javornik ansemble Mavrica serenaded us during a sumptuous meal which began with zlinkrofi soup and ended

2 St. Vitus Summer Picnic
St. Vitus Parish will hold their annual summer picnic on Sunday, July 16 at Slovenska Pristava in Harpersfield, Ohio.
The day will begin with a Mass at 12 noon followed by a wonderful dinner consisting of a generous portion of barbecued ribs and chicken, corn-on-the-cob, baked potato, fruit cup, rolls and butter.
Dinners are $10 for adults and $5 for children on the day of the picnic. Dinners purchas-
ed in advance by July 9th are $9.00. They can be purchased from the rectory by calling 361-1444.
The dinners will be served after Mass until 3 p.m. Then hot dogs, sausages, čevapčiči will be available.
The Sumrada Brothers Orchestra will perform for dancing.
Net proceeds will be used to begin roof repairs and purchase of new auditorium stage curtains.
Oyaski reflects on service for Euclid

As 1 begin my campaign for Mayor in earnest, I stopped to reflect on what I have learned over the last 18 years as a public servant in my hometown.
1 have been very proud and privileged to serve Euclid residents as a Councilman, Community Services and Development Director and Law Director. I have learned the importance of integrity, dedication and common sense. I have learned how to make the best decisions for the welfare of the City and its residents for the right reasons.
My platform centers on the following objectives:
Safe Streets, Sound Finances, and a Secure Future
I am committed to maintaining safe streets and neighborhoods throughout the City
of Euclid. I am committed to increasing the number of Police Officers to 105 through the use of the new Issue 13 income tax revenues and various community policing grants that are available.
I am committed to breaking ground in 1996 on a new fire station to replace the outmoded Station No. 2 located at Euclid Avenue and East 222nd Street. A new location closer to the historic center of Old Euclid near Chardon and Euclid Avenue will improve service and decrease response time to Chardon Hill, Harms Road and Indian Hills. A new station can be paid for by the permanent improvement portion of the new income tax revenues.

St. Vitus Slovenian School Picnic
St. Vitus Slovenian Language School will hold its annual benefit summer picnic on Sunday, July 30 at Slovenska Pristava in Harpersfield.
The day will begin with a Mass at 12:30 with Father Marijan Arhar, a visiting priest from Ljubljana as the celebrant.
Following Mass a dinner consisting of pork roast and all related side dishes will be served. Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children. Parents and friends of St. Vitus Slovenian School will prepare home-made pastries. Dinner tickets are available by calling 585-1360.

25 Years in Priesthood

Walter and Frank were in-nundated with calls and visits from television, radio and news media for appearances and interviews from the time we arrived until departure.
Reluctantly it was time to prepare for the trip home with unforgettable memories of meeting a wonderful group of people who were on our tour, beautiful music, fine dining, and of course, fine wine.

Slovenian Archivist speaks at Genealogical Convention
The biggest, most diverse multi-ethnic East European genealogical conference in the history of the world will be held in Cleveland on August 3-6. One of the guest speakers will be Dr. Peter Pavel Klasinc, head of the Institute of Archival Science in Maribor, Slovenia, who is on a brief tour of the United States. He will give two presentations.
The convention of the 86-member Federation of East European Family History Societies (FEEFHS) will begin with a visit to the Western Reserve Historical Society library on Wednesday afternoon, August 3, and end with a reception on Sunday afternoon, August 6, for Dr. Klasinc.
There will be 52 presentations on August 4 and 5 at the Holiday Inn, 7230 Engle Road, Middleburg Heights, Ohio, with five talks on Slovenian genealogy.
Topics include a few on generic subjects, such as computer genealogy, boundary changes and local resources, but most will be devoted to ethnic and religious groups, also including: Austrians, Carpatho-Rusyns, Croats, Czechs,	Germans,
Hungarians, Jews, Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Slovaks, Swiss, and Ukrainians.
A local overview will be provided by a slide presentation by Dr. John Grabowski, head of the Western Reserve Historical Society, on “Cleveland’s Ethnic Neighborhoods” at the Saturday luncheon.
Registration for the conference costs $45, provided it is postmarked by July 15. For single-day attendance, the cost is $30. After July 15, the prices increase to $55 and $40, respectively. Donna Debevec Cuillard is the director of the Simi Valley Family History Center. She has been researching her Slovenian ancestors for 29 years and has traced them back to the 16th Century without ever leaving the United States.
Her activities include extensive lecturing on genealogy, serving as the genealogy columnist for the Los Angeles Times OnLine newspaper, TimesLink, chairing the annual Simi Valley Stake Family History Seminar for the past 8 years, and serving as a heritage preservation volunteer for the Bureau of Land Management. She belongs to numerous societies, has served as tricounty representative on the California State Genealogical Alliance, and is currently on the board of directors of the Slovenian Genealogical Society.
Peter Pavel Klasinc, Ph.D., at age 49 is archival counselor and former director of the regional Archives at Maribor, Slovenia. He has been the director of the Institute for Archival Science at Maribor for 10 years and is editor of the publication “Atlanti.”
He graduated from Zagreb University and has studied in most European countries as

well as in Canada and America and is an international authority on the subject of preservation of classical and new information carriers in archives. He has published over 200 papers in the field of archival theory and practice and has lectured frequently in Slovenia and abroad. He speaks good English but has chosen to bring his daughter to help present his papers.
Tina Klasinc, born in 1976 has just completed secondary grammar school (high school) and is now a pre-med student in Slovenia. She speaks German and English and has been invited by her father to present both of his papers at this conference and help him as a translator during the question and answer period.
Albert Peterlin was born in the Slovenian coal mining community of Forest City, Pa. He founded the Slovenian Genealogical Society in 1968 and has been its president since then. Some of his articles have been published in The Genealogical Helper, The Eaglet (Journal of the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan), and elsewhere. He works for the National Weather Service in Silver Spring, Maryland, and is a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Drago Medved’s book. Slovenski Dunaj (Slovenian Vienna), contains brief accounts of Slovenians who lived and worked in Vienna. His chronicle begins with the Middle Ages right down to modern times. It was published by Mohorjeva druzhba in Celovec (Austria).
A museum is being organized in Kostanjevica dedicated to the Bourbons of France. Several members of the Bourbon Dynasty lie buried in the Franciscan monastery there. The last French king, Charles X, to avoid the cholera plague raging in Europe at that time, decided on this safe haven. However he fell victim to cholera and died in 1836.
Did you know that the City of Ljubljana, Slovenia celebrated the 850 anniversary since it was mentioned in historical records? And next year will be the 1,250th anniversary of the Christianization of the Slovenians?
In another article in Slovenec, Ivo Zhajdela discusses discussions held by the revolutionaries in which Boris Kidrich urged the English to bombard Ljubljana. And he points out that the statue of Kidrich stjH stands prominently in front of the Parliament building in Ljubljana.
Maijan Kovach left his beloved Slovenia in 1957 to emigrate to Australia. He died in April after a long list of accomplishments for Slovenians in Australia and the world. Just another example of outstanding talent drained out of Slovenia by the revolution to the benefit of a foreign country.
The orchestra of the American Army in Europe participated in the celebration of VE Day in Slovenia. The 53 member group, founded in 1P40, appeared in concert in various towns.
The two polka kings of USA and Canada are visiting the old country again. Walter Ostanek of Canada and Frankie Yankovic were greeted at the Brnik airport upon their arrival. They came in company of Tony Petkovšek, who was hosting a group from
Cleveland. Ostanek is noting his 60th birthday this year while Frankie has 80 notches in his accordion belt. Yankovic was the first Grammy Award winner in 1986 His accordion work was featured in this spring’s PBS nationwide broadcast. Long live our Polka Kings!
There is talk of taking the care of Svete Visharje out of the hands of the Slovenian Franciscans in Zhabnitse. The shrine dedicated to our Lady has been famous for decades. . Pilgrimages are very popular from Italy, Germany, and especially Slovenia^ _________________
World famous ski manufacturer Elan ,is celebrating its 50th anniversary by opening a new plant for sports equipment. Last year Elan exported 95% of its winter sports equipment, mostly to the U.S.A,, Japan, Germany, and Austria. Of the 200,000 pairs of children’s and adolescent’s skis produced, the output represented 25% of the world’s production.

Andrew Jagodnik earns nursing degree
Andrew Scott Jagodnik, son of Nancy and Anthony Jagodnik, Jr., of Bolton , Massachusetts, received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Frances Paine Bolton School of Nursing of Case Western Reserve University on May 13, 1995, after completing the first two years of the Nursing Doctorate program at the University.
He received a B.A. with a double major in Psychology and Biology from CWRU in 1993.
Andrew is the grandson of Raymond and Marie Beck of Richmond Heights, Ohio and of Anthony and Irene Jagodnik, Sr., of North Tarrytown, New York, formerly of Mayfield Village, Ohio.
He will begin his nursing career working in an Intensive Care setting and begin work on his Master’s degree in Nursing after gaining experience in the field.
Kristina Rus on Dean’s List
In a news release issued by John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, it was announced that Kristina Rus from Cleveland, a freshman there, was named to the Dean’s List for the spring, 1995 semester.
Students eligible for the Dean’s List must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours within one semester, and have a quality grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
Kristina is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Rus.

1 broiler-fryer chicken (21/? to 3 lbs.), cut up 3 tablespoons butter, melted Salt and pepper 1 small head cabbage, cut in ‘/z-inch slices !/? cup sliced onion
2 apples, cut in !/?-inch slices
1	tablespoon grated lemon peel
2	teaspoons caraway seed
1	teaspoon sugar
2	cups (8 02) shredded Swiss cheese !4 cup sliced almonds
Paprika
Brush chicken with butter: sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place chicken in 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Bake in preheated 400° F. oven 1 hour. Meanwhile, place cabbage, onion and apples in a 3-quart shallow baking dish. Sprinkle with lemon peel, caraway seed and sugar. Cover. Bake in preheated 400° F. oven 30 to 35 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Sprinkle 1 cup cheese over cabbage mixture. Place baked chicken on cabbage mixture; add pan drippings from chicken. Sprinkle remaining cheese, almonds and paprika over chicken. Bake until cheese begins to melt. Garnish with chopped parsley. if desired.

Lemon Poppy-Seed Cookies
A simple refrigerator cookie, this is really a homemade slice-and-bake dough. It freezes well. Makes about 40 cookies.
2 cups flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup poppy seeds
5 lemons
1/2 lb. butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract Combine the flour, salt and poppy seeds. Grate 2 Tbs. of the yellow zest from the lemons. Beat the butter, zest and sugar until creamy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat until incorporated. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
Form the chilled dough into logs measuring 2” in diameter and wrap in plactic. Refrigerate until firm or freeze for 30 minutes.
Heat the oven to 350°. Cut the dough into 1/4-inch slices and bake on ungreased cookie sheets until edges brown, 9 to 10 minutes.
CHICKEN RICE CASSEROLE
Place 1 cup uncooked rice (white or brown) in bottom of greased casserole. Lay pieces of 1 cut up fryer on rice. Sprinkle with 1 package dry onion soup.
Combine:
1	can cream of chicken soup
2	cups milk
a little pepper
Pour over chicken.
Bake at 300° for 2-1/4 hours. Cover with foil for first part of baking time.
PECAN BISCUITS
2/3 cup chopped pecans 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2-1/2 tablespoons grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 8-ounce packaged refrigerated buttermilk biscuits 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
About 30 minutes before serving:
Preheat oven to 400°F. In medium bowl, combine pecans, sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon. Dip top and sides of each biscuit into melted butter or margarine, then dip into sugar mixture, coating completely; place on greased cookie sheets about one inch apart. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown. Makes 20 biscuits.
MEATLOAF STUFFED PEPPERS
Drain 1 - 2-oz. can mushroom stems. Save juice. Add enough milk to make 1/2 cup.
Add to: 1-1/2 lbs. of ground beef
3/4 c. bread crumbs 2 T. chopped onions l egg
1 tsp. Worchestershire sauce 1/8 tsp. pepper
1	tsp. salt
Wash and remove stems and seeds from 4 large peppers cut in half. Place in shallow pan in cup shape. Fill each one with meatloaf. Combine:

2 teaspoons grated cheese Pour over peppers. Bake 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Very good.

6 Slovenia may reduce pension pay
LJUBLJANA, July 5 (Reuter) — The Slovenian government wants to reduce pension payments which took up over 14 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) last year, a parliamentarian said.
The government has prepared minor adjustments to the pension law, which will be discussed in the Parliament in the autumn and which will slightly reduce increases in pensions. Major changes in the pension law are expected sometime next year.
At present 31 percent of every gross salary goes to a pension fund. The amount has doubled since 1986. In 1994 Slovenia had 0.9 working persons for each retired or in-
capacitated person, down from 1.7 active persons in 1990 and 2.5 in 1985.
Peter Glavic, a member of the state council (upper house of parliament), said the government has not yet prepared a concrete strategy for cutting payments. “In the first half of 1995 an average pension amounted to 77.1 percent of an average salary in Slovenia, up from 64.1 percent in 1991,” he said.
“We have to act immediately, otherwise growing pensions will strongly reduce the rate of GDP growth,” Glavic said at a meeting of the government Social and Economic Council.

On Wednesday, June 14th, the Holmes Ave. Pensioners meeting was called to order by vice president Matt Zabukovec. The minutes, treasurer’s and correspon dence reports were read, and pending business was completed.
Giving her civic report, Antoinette McGrath suggested that we visit the Euclid Art Center located at 21129 North Avenue in Euclid, Ohio. Various maps and items of the early history of our area are on display at the Center, including the Gornik Family Treasures. Hours at the Center are Sundays and Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Joseph Lah passed away Thursday, June 15.
Mr. Lah’s wife, Ana (nee Zupančič) is deceased. He is the father of Josef (Marie) Irena (Joe) Rus, and Lenka (Joe) Chauby; grandfather of eight; great-grandfather of four; and brother of Millie Zupan.

Red-hot job shop growth should cool some in 1995

A new report predicts that Cleveland-area machining job shops can look forward to a solid 1995, though they’re unlikely to match the torrid pace of orders from last year.
There are about 650 job shops in Northeast Ohio, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Census of Manufacturers. Job shops don’t make their own products, but they perform a variety of machining and other metalworking services for manufacturers. Those jobs make them a key segment of the area’s manufacturing economy.
The big drag on 1995’s growth rate once again will be the aero-space business. The association expects aerospace companies to reduce demand for metalworking services by about 5%. That decline would come on top of a 15% drop in 1994.
Roger Sustar, president of Fredon Corp. in Mentor, Ohio, said the association outlook mirrors his company’s assessment of business conditions. Mr. Sustar said orders have slackened at his precision machining operation in the past two months. In 1994, Fredon’s orders were up 60%.
“The robust economy may be coming to an end; you knew it had to happen at some point,” Mr. Sustar said.
Still, Mr. Sustar said a slower pace of growth from 1994’s red-hot conditions may not be all that bad.
“A little slowdown this summer would give us a chance to catch up,” Mr.
Sustar said. “Our guys have been working 65 hours per week.” His customers include machine tool builders and makers of medical equipment.
Meanwhile, some other metal-working firms here, such as Universal Grinding Corp. in Cleveland, say 1995 will be better than last year, even if the economy does cool.
“I look for a repeat of 1994, plus 10%,” said Don Toth, owner of Universal Grinding.
Mr. Toth said his business will grow this year because of decisions by large original equipment makers to farm out more of their metalworking processes, such as grinding. That trend means more business for his company.
“I expect good things to happen the rest of this year. In the last three months, I’ve hired 10 people,” said Mr. Toth, whose company employs 53.

St. Mary’s Begins 90th Celebration
St. Mary’s Collinwood Church begins the celebration of its 90th anniversary with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward Pevec. The Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 13.
(There will be no 10 a.m. nor 12 noon Mass that day.)
Following Mass, there will be an Ice Cream Social in the school cafeteria.

Program obiska papeža Janeza Pavla II. v Slovenijo je določen — Prispel bo 17. maja zvečer in ostal dva cela dneva
Pretekli ponedeljek je bila v Ljubljani tiskovna konferenca cerkvenega pripravljalnega odbora, vodi ga ljubljanski pomožni škof Alojz Uran, na kateri so bili posredovani podatki o papeževem obisku. V cerkvenem odboru so poleg mariborskega škofa dr. Franca Krambergerja še predstavniki vseh treh slovenskih škofij ter drugi posamezniki. Cerkveni odbor za pripravo in izvedbo papeževega obiska bo sodeloval s podobnim odborom, ki ga je imenovala slovenska vlada. Ta odbor vodi notranji minister Andrej Ster.
Na tiskovni konferenci v ponedeljek je bilo poudarjeno, da bo imel obisk Janeza Pavla II. predvsem pastoralni značaj. Iz poročila v torkovi ljubljanski Republiki-.
»Njegov osnovni namen je utrjevanje vere in zvestobe Cerkvi. Temu primerno bodo zato glavni poudarki dani 1250-letnici Karantanskega misijona, 1200-letnici oglejske sinode, ki je postavila temelje misijonskega delovanja v naših krajih, in tisočletnici Brižinskih spomenikov.
Slovenska škofovska konferenca ob tem pričakuje tudi papeževo proglasitev škofa Antona Martina Slomška za blaženega. Zadnjo in dokončno besedo naj bi o tem letos novembra izrekla kongregacija v Rimu.
Sicer pa program papeževega obiska, sestavljen po zelo natančnih vatikanskih pravilih, predvideva 18. maja osrednje srečanje v Ljubljani, na katerem pričakujejo od 200 do 300 tisoč vernikov. Istega dne popoldne naj bi se papež (verjetno v Postojni) sešel z mladino, ki naj bi mu prav na njegov rojstni dan pokazala, da smo Slovenci most med germanskim, romanskim, slovanskim in
madžarskem svetom. Drugi dan obiska, v nedeljo, 19. maja, se bo papež sešel z verniki v Mariboru. Poleg pričakovane Slomškove beatifikacije naj bi srečanje s prekmurskimi evangeličani imelo tudi ekumenski značaj.«
V	daljšem poročilu v torkovem Dnevniku je bilo omenjeno, da prostor za mašo v Ljubljani 18. maja še ni dokončno izbran. V Mariboru pa bo maša po vsej verjetnosi na tamkajšnjem letališču, kajti ta prostor lahko sprejme do 200 tisoč ljudi. Na tiskovni konferenci je škof dr. Franc Kramberger povedal, da čeprav bo treba počakati do novembra za končno odločitev glede razglasitve škofa Slomška za blaženega, so vendarle že dana upanje in zagotovila.
Novinarjem je zanimalo, koliko bo obisk stal, in še posebej, kolikšne bodo stroške za državo. Ker je papežev obisk tudi na državni ravni, je bil odgovor, bo imela država stroške, tako kot z vsakim državniškim obiskom. S svoje strani namerava škofovska konferenca odpreti poseben fond, kjer se bodo zbirala sredstva za cerkvene projekte v zvezi z obiskom Janeza Pavla II.

V	zadnjih tednih se zdi, da je Janez Janša, predsednik Socialdemokratske stranke in bivši obrambni minister, v središču pozornosti, tako s strani njegovih privržencev kot kritikov. Ta teden je SDSS imenovala nov strokovni svet, ki naj bi bil tako organiziran kot vladni resorji. V Angliji npr. imenujejo to »shadow cabinet«. Na volitvah, ki naj bi bile proti koncu 1996, pričakuje Janša, da bo SDSS dobila 20 odstotkov glasov in s tem bila najmočnejša stranka. Ta teden pa Mladina piše o Janševem »kultu osebnosti«.
JAMES OBERSTAR, SLOVENSKO AMERIŠKI KONGRESNIK, OBISKUJE SLOVENIJO Ta teden je na obisku v Sloveniji kong. James Oberstar, ki predstavlja zadnjih 21 let okrožje v severni Minnesoti. Kong. Oberstar je slovenskega rodu, pripada demokratski stranki (njegov prednik v tem okrožju je bil sedaj že. pok. John Blatnik), odlikuje pa se med drugim s svojim navdušenjem nad Slovenijo in njenimi uspehi. V Slovenijo gaje povabil predsednik Milan Kučan, vendar se bo (je že) srečal s številnimi drugimi vodilnimi osebnostmi, pretekli torek se je na primer srečal s predsedniki poslanskih skupin vseh v slovenskem parlamentu zastopanih strank, isti večer, (4. julij) pa se je udeležil sprejema v vili Podrožnik, ki ga je priredil ob ameriškem Dnevu neodvisnosti odhajajoči ameriški veleposlanik Allan Wendt. Wendtov naslednik bo Victor Jackovich, sedanji ameriški veleposlanik v Bosni, hrvaškega porekla, katere družina izhaja iz bližine slovensko-hrvaške meje. Čeprav zelo pozitiven do Slovenije in njenega utrjevanja demokracije in uspešnega gospodarskega sistema, je kong. Oberstar zagovarjal večjo strpnost v političnem dialogu in predlagal, naj bi v Sloveniji bolj poudarjali stvari, ki jih združujejo, kot pa tiste, ki jih razdvajajo. Posnetek zgoraj prikazuje kong. Oberstarja in Milana Kučana ob njunem srečanju pretekli ponedeljek. Kong. Oberstar je imel namen priti na izseljenski piknik Srečanje v moji deželi, ki je bil 1. julija v Postojni, a je moral zaradi dolžnosti v Washingtonu odložiti obisk Slovenije za dva dni, sestal pa se je z novim predsednikom Slovenske izseljenske matice dr. Janezom Bogatajem.

Vstopnina le $2 na osebo, piknik traja ves popoldan in večer, ob 4h pop. bo škof Edward Pevec daroval tkim. polko mašo, ob spremljavi Vad-njalovega orkestra, ki bo po maši igral tudi za ples in zabavo.
Vrnitev na delo—
Po skoro tritedenskem bivanju v Sloveniji, se je urednik vrnil na svoje mesto in s to številko pričel 17. leto urejevanja AD. Ta obisk je bil vsestranski bogat in se je nabralo veliko vtisov, gradiva, ki bodo v prihajajočih tednih poromala v objavo. Izredno koristno je bilo srečanje z uredniki slovenskih medijev po svetu, ki ga je organiziral vladni Urad za informiranje ob sodelovanju Urada za Slovence po svetu. Vseh skupaj je bilo 17 udeležencev, polega urednika iz ZDA ga. Corrine Leskovar iz Chicaga (Zarja, Slovenska radio ura) in ga. Vida Košir (slovenska stran Prosvete), iz Kanada pa g. Ludvik Jamnik (Slovenska država) in ga. Marija Ahačič-Pollak (radio).
Zaradi časovne stiske, je slovenski del današnje AD dokaj omejen, v prihodnjih tednih pa pričakujemo po zaslugi številnih oglasov v angleškem delu kar precej slovenskih strani. Dobrodošli bodo prispevki drugih piscev, ki so bili v zadnjem času na obisku v Sloveniji, posebej tistih, ki so se udeleževali raznih slovesnosti v Teharjih, Kočevskem rogu in drugod. Sicer bodo ponatisnjene fotografije, objavljene v Sloveniji, in tudi poročila, izvirna pa so vedno bolj zaželena.

Sprava osrečuje in osvobaja
Zamolčane žrtve vojne in nasilja totalitarne ideologije, pokojni brez imena in spomenika, zagrebeni po neštetih breznih slovenskih gozdov, pa prisilno mobilizirani v tujo vojsko, izgnanci v Nemčijo, Srbijo in drugam, pregnanci, žrtve in preživeli koncentracijskih taborišč... Ob teh besedah vstajajo pred nas temne sence izpred pol stoletja. Mračne sence molče trobentajo, »da človek lahko postane pošast. In če je postal nekoč, lahko postane spet« (J. Stanovnik).
Ko razmišljam o teh dogodkih kot človek, ki sem se rodil po vojni, moram najprej »položiti svojo roko na svoja usta« (Job 40,4) in umolkniti v spoštovanju do neizmerne bolečine in krivice, ki jo je doživelo katerokoli človeško srce na katerikoli strani. Mnoge, premnoge je ta bolečina in krivica žgala in pekla še desetletja, tembolj, ker ni bila priznana in ni smela na dan. Ni se smela izraziti v obisku grobišča, v cvetlici ljubezni, v solzeči se sveči vere in upanja.
Spreleti me ob misli, česa vsega je sposoben človek. »Stvar, ki se je včasih celo Bog veseli, drugič pa bi se je celo hudič sramoval« (B. Kneževič). »Kakšna pošast, kakšna zmeda, kakšen nosilec protislovij, kakšno čudo! Sodnik nad vsem, nemočen črv zemlje; čuvar resnice, kotišče negotovosti in zmote; slava in izmeček vesolja!« (B. Pascal). Eni so nad njim obupali in ga razglasili za edino in nepopravljivo napako evolucije. Kdor gleda nanj skozi očala dogodkov tega stoletja, zlasti dogodkov izpred petdesetih let, je njegov pesimizem skoraj razumljiv...
Menim, da se iz tega obupa in pesimizma odpirajo samo ena vrata: to so vrata vere v odrešenje, v moč sprave in odpuščanja. Ta vrata nam je odprl Bog, ki »nas je prvi ljubil«, ki nam je v Kristusu prvi ponudil roko sprave. Oznanil nam je »evangelij miru« in spravil svet z Bogom. Prišel nam je pokazat pot iz začaranega ali bolje: hudičevega kroga vračanja enakega z enakim. Odtlej je mogoče presekati dvigajočo se spiralo maščevanja. Če bi bili prepuščeni sami sebi, bi se tem vračanjem prej ali slej med seboj uničili.
Sprava je možna, nujna in težka. V tem stavku se mi zdijo najbolje strnjena številna razpravljanja zadnjih tednov.
Kdor pravi, da ni možna, je obupal nad človekom in nad odrešenjem. Sprava je možna zato, ker je najprej božje potem šele človekovo delo. Obstaja samo eno resnično in pristno odpuščanje, to je božje odpuščanje. Sprava je mogoče, če vanjo pritegnemo Boga in če upremo pogled v Kristusovo smrt in vstajenje.
Sprava je nujna. »Slovenski narod se ne bo dvignil in moralno ne bo ozdravel, dokler se ne bo soočil z vsem zlom, ki se je nakopičilo med nami, dokler ne bo skušal obrisati vseh solza s trpečih obrazov in poravnati vseh krivic, ki smo jih prizadeli drug drugemu. Narodna sprava je ena najbolj nujnih nalog, pred katerimi stojimo, ...je cena za slovensko prihodnost. Brez sprave smo narod brez prihodnosti« (dr. Franc Rode, Spomin zavest načrt cerkve na Slovenskem, 133).
Sprava je težka, nadvse težka, ker je tako težko odpustiti. Odpuščanje pa je jedro in srčika sprave.
Čut za pravičnost nas spontano navaja k uporabi sile, s katero bi radi poravnali krivico in našli zadoščenje za žalitev, ki nas je zadela. Oupuščanje pomeni prelom s tisto logiko človeških odnosov, ki se ravnajo po načelu pravičnega povračila. Vračanje zla z
Piknik fara sv. Vida na Slovenski pristavi v nedeljo, 16. julija
CLEVELAND, O. — Fara sv. Vida bo imela v nedeljo, 16. julija, svoj letni poletni piknik na Slovenski pristavi. To bo letos edini večji farni poletni dogodek. Ob 12. uri bo sv. maša, sledilo bo dobro kosilo. Serviranje bo do 3h popoldne. Cena kosilu je $10, za otroke pa $5. Za ostali del popoldneva in zvečer bo kuhinja imela na voljo »hamburgerje«, hrenovke, »čevapčiče« in druge sendviče. Na razpolago bo še vsakovrstna pijača.
V popoldanskem času, po 3. uri, bodo organizirane razne igre za odrasle in mlajše. Ves dan bo odprt plavalni bazen, na plavalce bodo pazili izkušeni »lifeguards«. Člani SP imajo pravico do uporabe bazena, nečlani pa bodo prispeli majhno pristojbino. Za glasbo bodo poskrbeli mladi »Sumrada Brothers«.

Mimogrede iz Milwaukeeja
ZAHVALA
CLEVELAND, O. - Pred mesecem dni smo vas, dragi bralci, vabili na Slovensko pristavo k procesiji Sv. Rešnjega Telesa in na piknik Slovenske šole fare Marije Vnebovzete. Prav lepa nedelja je bila 18. junija, sončna, topla, in zbralo se je kar precej faranov kot tudi drugih vernikov. Pri maši, katero je daroval župnik g. Janez Kumše, je le-ta imel zelo lepo pridigo. Prepričeval in navduševal nas je, naj verujemo v skrivnost Jezusovega bivanja v sveti hostiji in v Njegovo Kri v posvečenem vinu.
Po maši smo se zvrstili v procesijo in obšli vse štiri oltarje. Vmes smo peli, fantje pa so pripravili stari način pritrkavanja na traverze, kar se je lepo slišalo. Prosili smo blagoslova za polja in domove, za varstvo v težavah, za mir med nami in narodni ter prosili sadov Njegovega odrešenja.
Po procesiji smo bili hitro postreženi z okusnim kosilom, katerega so pripravile matere šolskih otrok. Po kosilu so se nekateri podali v hladilni bazen, drugi so se hladili v prijetni senci pod smrekami, dokler se niso pojavili fantje Alpskega seksteta, ki so s svojimi poskočnimi vižami skrbeli, da se je napolnil plesni prostor.
Vsem vam, ki ste se odzvali našemu vabilu in prišli na Slovensko pristavo, prav iskrena hvala! Hvala g. župniku, ki je združil procesijo s piknikom. Bilo je zelo povezano z našo tradicijo, saj iz nje črpamo moč za vsak dan!
Hvala vsem materam za vso pomoč v kuhinji ali kjerkoli je bila potreba, hvala očetom v točilnici in povsod, kjer smo rabili vašo pomoč. Hvala vam, otroci, ko ste potresali cvetje pred Jezusa, prodajali listke za mačka v Žaklju ter tekmovali. Hvala Alpskemu sekstetu za razveseljevanje in dobro voljo. Hvala vsem gospodinjam za prineseno pecivo in darila.
Hvala Ameriški Domovini za vse objavljeno v zvezi s piknikom, kot tudi dr. Milanu Pavlovčiču, njegovemu sinu Mitju ter Pavlu Lavriša za vabila po radijskih valovih.
Bil je lep popoldan. Bogu hvala zanj in še za slične! Vsi želimo vsem prav lepe počitfii-ce, v jeseni pa zopet na veselo snidenje v šoli.	M.L.
Ker je osebje Ameriške Domovine v teh vročih dneh stopilo v zaslužene počitnice, sem slovenske dogodke v Milwaukee-ju v preteklem času skrajšal. Sledijo:
V nedeljo, 21. maja, je bila znana rojakinja Jackie Nim-mer v veliki dvorani na kampusu univerze Wisconsin - Milwaukee za delo in usluge v korist slovenski skupnosti v Mil-waukeeju in okolici odlikovana z lepo plakteko, katero ji je izročil predsednik Slovenian Arts Program g. Karel Dovnik. Pri tej svečanosti je z lepim petjem angleških in par točk tudi slovenskih pesmi nastopil ženski pevski trio PMS iz Kalifornije. Odlikovanki Jackie Nimmer iskrene čestitke!
Spominska svečanost
v Triglavskem parku
Slovensko društvo Triglav je 29. maja, na ameriškem Spominski dan prazniku, v društveni dvorani v Triglavskem parku počastilo spomin umrlih članov in članic ter antikomunističnih padlih borcev. Sv. mašo je daroval rev. dr. Jože Gole, berilo je bral Franjo Mejač, pevski zbor pod vodstvom Mare Kolmanove je z lepim petjem mašo spremljal. Na koncu je predsednik Jože Kunovar vse lepo pozdravil in se zahvalil za lepo udeležbo.
Spominski govor o umrlih članih je podal Lojze Galič, spominsko črtico o mrtvem očetu je ljubko brala Helenca Trohna, spomin na mrtve junake je lepo in korajšno deklamiral Gregor Goršič, kot zadnji govornik pa je Jože Rus iz Chicaga prikazal junaštvo pa-
dlih antikomunističnih borcev. Slava padlim junakom!
Sledilo je kosilo z vsemi dobrotami. Nato se je razvila prijateljska zabavo. Mnogi smo obujali spomine na pokojne rojake, ki so nekoč med nami živeli, se veselili in tudi z nami trpeli. Bil je lep slovenski praznik.
Koncert zbora Uspeh
V petek, 16. junija, se je v dobro zasedeni dvorani sv. Janeza Evangelista vršil koncert zbora Uspeh. Dobro ga je pripravila in tudi vodila Mici Bregant. Na sporedu je bilo okrog 15 slovenskih ter pet ameriških pesmi. S tem sporedom zbor te dni nastopa v Sloveniji. (Op. ur. — Kar lepo se je zbor predstavil na pikniku Srečanje v moji deželi, ki je bil 1. julija v Postojni.)
Prvi Triglavski piknik
Na prijetno in sončno nedeljo 25. junija je društvo Triglav priredilo v svojem parku prvi piknik letošnje sezone. Udeležba naših ljudi, od blizu in daleč, je bila velika, prišli so tudi iz sosednje države Illinois. Sv. mašo je daroval s krasno pridigo društveni dolgoletni duhovni vodja rev. dr. Jože Gole, berilo je bral Frank Mencak, pevci in pevke pa so mašo krasno spremljali. Po maši je predsednik Jože Kunovar pozdravil navzoče. Sledilo je kosilo, šefinji kuhinje Mariji Kunovar vsa pohvala.
Za zabavo in ples nas je razveseljeval harmonikarski orkester. Drugi Triglavski piknik bo v nedeljo, 13. avgusta. Že ob tej priložnosti: Vsi prisrčno vabljeni!
Misijonski piknik

enakom zlom (»oko za oko«), četudi se to vrši v imenu pravičnosti, ne spremeni človeške družbe. Potrebna je neka nova drža, ki ne išče mere v tem, kar se je že zgodilo (izgubljeno oko). To je drža odpuščanja. Gre za dejanje, ki ustvarja nekaj novega, za ustvarjalno dejanj v odličnem pomenu besede. Logika neprestanega ponavljanja istega na koncu nujno vodi v uničenje vsaj enega od nasprotnikov.
Sprava in odpuščanje ne pomenita pozabljanja tega, kar se je zgodilo. V Parizu so postavili spomenik vsem tistim Francozom, ki so bili odpeljani v nemška koncentracijska taborišča. Nad portalom stoji napis: »Odpustimo, a nikoli ne pozabimo!« Kdor se spotakne ob tem stavku, naj pomisli, da je središčno sporočilo Jezusovih besed in dejanj odpuščanje med ljudmi, nikoli pa ni zahteval, naj pozabljamo. Resnična krepost odpuščanja se pokaže ravno tedaj, ko se človek tudi spominja. Če bi namreč mogel pozabiti, mi navsezadnje ne bi bilo treba odpustiti, saj za to ne bi bilo več povoda. Ker pa mi je zlo še predobro v spominu, zato morem tudi iz vsega srca odpustiti. To je odločilna točka odpuščanja: ne gre za pozabljanje, ampak za osvoboditev od notranje jeze, zagrenjenosti in želje po maščevanju.

Odpuščanje je pogumna odločitev za neko novo prihodnost, drugačno, kot jo zahtevajo pretekla dejanja. Je vabilo k nečemu novemu, k domiselnosti za novo, k ustvarjalnosti. »Oko za oko« — takšno načelo navidezno pomirja, ker vnaprej določa moje dejanje. Tisti pa, ki enakega ne vrača z enakim, ve, da uničeno oko bližnjega nikoli ne more nadomestiti njegovega očesa. Drugemu povzročena škoda nikoli ne odtehta lastne izgube. Nasprotno, zlo se samo podvoji.
In končno: sprava je osrečujoča in osvobajajoča. Dokler sovražim in kličem po maščevanju nad krivičneži, pustim, da so gospodarji mojega življenja. Neprestano so mi v mislih, njihov obstoj in sreča sta kot mora zame. Ko pa se dvignem do odpuščanja, preprečim, da bi zlo dejanje še določalo moje razmerje do človeka.
To je mogoče samo v veri v usmiljenega, odpuščajočega in tudi pravičnega Boga. Zato je za spravo — tako s človekom kot z Bogom — treba po svojih močeh popraviti storjeno krivico.
V odpuščanju se človek približa Bogu in njegovemu ravnanju. »Če velja: motiti se je človeško, potem velja tudi: odpuščati je božje, je božansko.«
»Sprava je božji dar in izvir novega življenja« — to bo tema 2. ekumenskega srečanja kristjanov Evrope 1. 1997 (prvo je bilo leta 1989 v Baslu). Evropa je celina, zaznamovana z globokim hrepenenjem po spravi znotraj in zunaj svojih meja. Slovenija prav tako. Bomo sprejeli za božji dar? Bomo pustili, da privre na dan izvir novega življenja? Lemontski odmevi...
CLEVELAND, O. - Bil je nekoliko meglen sobotni dan, toda vseeno je prišlo precejšnje število ljudi. Takoj po popoldanskih urah so že prihajali prvi obiskovalci iz oddaljenih krajev. Srečanje je bilo prisrčno in vsakdo je imel kaj novega za povedati iz kraja, od koder je prišel. Tako, da je kar hitro napočil čas, da smo si šli ogledat v dvorano film iz preteklosti: »British Betrayal«. V dvorani je bilo čisto tiho, navzoči so z zanimanjem sledili vsebini filma. Po ogledu filma je bila pripravljena večerja. Ljudje so sedeli zunaj pod košatimi iglastimi drevesi in večerjali v krogu poznancev.
Po večerji so šli ljudje počasnih korakov do Spominske kapelice. Ta prostor je bil lepo okinčan z zastavami, svežimi cvetlicami, postavljeni sta bili sliki generala Leona Rupnika in ljubljanskega škofa dr. Gregorija Rožmana. Ljudje so prižigali lučke v spomin dragim in padlim domobrancem. Mirno je bilo, videl si samo sklonjene glave zatopljene v molitvi.
Predno se je pričela skupna molitev, je bila podana tale misel:
50 let
Mesec maj bo za nas Slovence mesec, ki ne bo nikdar pozabljen v zgodovini. Takrat smo zapustili dom in domovino. Mnogi smo odšli v svet in se tu naselili, kjer je naša nova domovina.
Med nami so bili tudi domobranci, ki so branili domačijo in vero očetov. Toda ti so bili vrnjeni po grdi kupčiji angleških zasedbenih sil. Ti mladi fantje so končali življenje v Kočevskem rogu, Teharjih in drugih krajih domovine. Ta mesec je spomin na te padle in se jih spominjamo te dni.
V domovini po vaseh postavljajo spominske plošče v spomin na te mlade ljudi. Mnogi se še spominjajo, kako je bilo tiste dni po končani vojni. Hodijo v kraje in prižigajo lučke

v spomin na njih, ki so dali življenje.
V domovini je propadla ideologija, kije bila pet desetletij. Danes se govori in piše marsikaj od preteklosti. Na položajih vodstva so še vedno ljudje, ki so bili vzgojeni v tem času, zato ni nikakega izgleda, da bi vrnili čast domobrancem, ki so branili domačijo očetov.
Novi rod, ki se sedaj rodi, bo šele spregledal in videl, kaj se je zgodilo v preteklosti. Zganil se bo in prosil odpuščanja. Takrat bo slovenski človek zopet našel dušo. Sosed bo podal roko sosedu v znamenju sprave. Po vaseh se bodo zbirali pred domovi ljudje, peli bodo in se veselili, takrat bo pozabljena vsa hudobija preteklosti. Mi, ki se danes na tem kraju spominjamo naših padlih za domovino, mnogi ne bomo teh veseli dni dočakali, dočakal pa jih bo naš rod, ki je rojen v tej novi domovini. Molimo vendar, da bi tudi kdo od nas dočakal ta veseli dan sprave! Slava in mir pokojnim!
Pričela se je molitev rožnega venca. Ta molitev je bila posvečena našim padlim za vero, domačijo in domovino. Pa za tiste, ki so se že tu preselili v večnost.
Po zaključni molitvi je ga. Mara Kolman recitirala »Skozi čas«, ustvaritev Ivana Korošca. Zapelo smo domobransko pesem. Videl si solzne oči. Zopet počasnih korakov so ljudje zapuščali kraj in odšli na prostor, kjer je bil prižgan kres pod Spominsko kapelico. Kar hitro se je dvignil plamen proti nebu, kakor da bi naše vroče želje in prošnje šle v kraj, kjer so padli za domovino.
Precej se je že stemnilo, ognjeni ogorki so hreščali ob zgorevanju. Pri Spominski kapelici je bilo nešteto raznobarvnih žarometov, ki so osvetljevali ta kraj. Obstal sem ob tem pogledu, zamislil se nazaj v detinska leta, na grozote, ki so se izvršile pred 50. leti. Človek si ne more misliti, da se kaj takega zgodilo, toda resnica počasi prihaja na dan. Gledal sem v to krasoto, omamljen sem bil, in kraj zapustil z žalostjo v notranjosti.

»Karmelska Mati božja«, 16. julija, je v tem mesecu edini Marijin praznik. Katoliške šole te dežele imajo lepo navado, da prvoobhajance vpišejo v »Karmelsko bratovščino« in jim izročajo škapulir.
15. julija goduje veliki frančiškanski svetnik, sv. Bonaventura, škof in cerkveni učitelj. Bonaventura (1218 - 1274) je bil svet redovnik, postal general frančiškanskega reda, sloveč govornik in odličen teolog. Napisal je številna filozofska, teološka in mistična dela, za kar ga je papež Sikst V. imenoval »Serafinski učitelj - Doctor seraphicus«.

obveznosti, smo slovesnost biserne maše obhajali v nedeljo, 21. maja, pri Sv. Štefanu v Chicagu, kjer je pater že dolga leta pomočnik v župniji, in zlasti lepo skrbi za bolnike v fari.
Farani in prijatelji so napolnili cerkev za slovesno mašo. Ob spremstvu sobratov in mladine v narodnih nošah, mu je ob vhodu po slovenski navadi cerkveni zbor zapel Riharjevo »Biseromašnik bod’ pozdravljen, od Boga si nam poslan«.
Ker je bil p. Kalist dolga leta profesor svetopisemskih ved v bogoslovju, je bil slavnostni govornik za to priliko -njegov bivši slušatelj, Fr. Charles Fasso, OFM, župnik cerkve Sv. Petra v Chicagu. Na kratko je orisal patrovo življenjsko pot, kjer jasno vidi, da »Bog vodi naše življenje, zlasti še življenje duhovnika«.

ta Rusa, priredili slavljencu kratek program. Zlasti ga je ganila pesem, ki jo je tudi sam pel pri prvem sv. obhajilu: »Sladki Jezus, hočem dati čisto ti srce, tvojo voljo spolnjevati moje so želje.«
Na praznik Marije Pomagaj, 24. maja, je Bog poklical k sebi našega sobrata Timoteja Daničiča - Bro. Timothy, OFM. Rojen je bil 30. oktobra 1925 v Clevelandu, Ohio. Pri krstu so mu dali ime Rihard. Ko je 2. februarja 1946 stopil v frančiškanski red, je prejel ime Brat Timotej.
Več let je v Lemontu opravljal različna dela, kjer je bilo potrebno, zlasti v pralnici in v kuhinji. Večino redovnega življenja pa je br. Timotej preživel pri cerkvi Sv. Janeza Evangelista v Milwaukeeju in pri novi cerkvi v Greenfieldu, kjer je skrbel za hišo in v kuhinji pripravljal hrano patrom.
Njegovo posebno veselje je bila cerkev. Kot zakristan je imel red v zakristiji in znal primerno, prav umetniško, okrasiti oltarje in cerkev. V svojem življenju je precej trpel, zlasti zadnja leta. Naj v Bogu večni mir uživa!
V mesecu juliju so umrli naslednji sobratje: br. Bonifacij Dimnik (9. julija 1967), p. Klavdij Okorn (11. julija 1979), p. Frančišek Blanko Kavčič (31. julija 1931). Naj jim sveti večna luč.
Pri šmarnicah je bil tudi letos lep obisk, zlast na materinski dan, ko so pc pobožnosti otroci priredili materam lep program. Naprej otroci iz Joli-eta pod vodstvom Ivanke Mar-kun, nato otroci iz Chicaga in okolice pod vodstvom Frančiške Goršič. Z izborom primernih pesmi je program zaključil zbor »Slovenska pesem« pod vodstvom Helene Rozman-Williams.
Šmarnične govore so letos imeli p. Bernardin, p. Kalist in p. David. Za pete litanije pred oltarjem smo imeli pomoč, zato je lepo donelo v tri in šti-riglasju. Bog plačaj. Prav tako za okrasitev oltarja!
Vsakoletne duhovne vaje ob zaključku meseca maja je vodil p. Bernardin. Letos je bila udeležba nekoliko boljša. Vedno upamo, da se bo več rojakov in rojakinj poslužilo priložnosti, ki jim je ponujena. Vsi smo potrebni, da od časa do časa pogledamo sami vase in pogledamo do dna našega srca in našega uma, kam teži: ali k Bogu ali od Boga. Upamo, da je vedno prvo.
Zahvala obenem vsem dobrotnikom, zlasti tistim, ki darujete za cerkev, samostan in za list. Za dobrotnike, žive in rajne, darujemo eno sv. mašo na teden, pa tudi dnevno se jih spominjamo.
»Slovensko versko središče« obsega že lepo število rojakov-faranov. V cerkvi Marije Pomagaj (njej je posvečeno versko središče) smo imeli pred kratkim prvo poroko in krst. Vnaprej imamo pa že nekaj prijav poroke in krsta. Bog blagoslavljaj po Marijini priprošnji!

Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1088. Uršulinka sestra Zora Škerlj se je 20.
januarja oglasila iz državice Bocvane, kjer spet živi v ko-muniteti: Ursuline Sisters, P.O. Box 685, Serowe, Botswana. Dobila je nov delokrog delovanj:
»Vaše pismo s priloženim čekom je prispelo včeraj. Prisrčna hvala vam in vašim sodelavcem in sodelavkam MZA za ves trud, čas in zanimanje, s katerim nas spremljate. Se posebno, Bog povrni za duhovno podporo.
Upam, da se v novem okolju in lagodnejšem delu dobro počutite, morda pav kot doma, ker ste bil tam že prej toliko let. In seveda, kar naprej tako neutrudljivo skrbite za nas in za širjenje božjega kraljestva po vsem svetu. Naj Vas Bog živi še na mnoga leta in bogato blagoslavlja Vaše delo.
Tudi jaz se uvajam v novo delo. Koncem 1993 sem predala odgovornost za karitativno in razvoj no-vzgojno skrb v naši škofiji domačemu kadru. Hvala Bogu, saj to je dober znak rasti domače Cerkve, ko lahko njeni, domači člani prevzamejo več odgovornosti in jih potem po svoje izvršujejo. Takoj zatem sem odšla v Evropo na sobotno leto za malo študija, duhovne obnove in precej počitka ter vsesplošne okrepitve.
Ko sem delala na škofiji, osem
let, sem živela pri drugih, domačih redovnicah, ker me uršulinke nimamo skupnosti v glavnem mestu, Gaborone. Tako je tudi zame sedaj, ko sem spet v Serowe, kjer sem bila že prej več let, vse domače, lepo, ko sem spet med svojimi sosestrami. Prav tako se počutim kar doma tudi med župljani in vaščani.
Le delo bo nekoliko drugačno. Sem sčm prišla šele ta mesec. Posvečala se bom največ, skoraj izključno. San ljudem
ali ‘grmičarjem’ (bušmanom), in sicer raznim skupnostim. Nekateri živijo prav blizu Serowe, skoraj v sami vasi, vedno bajtarsko; drugi raztreseno po širni savani, kjerkoli morejo dobiti pitno vodo; in spet tretji so v novih naseljih, kjer jim je oblast dala peščico zemlje, z vodnjakom, vse premalo za preživetje. Kjerkoli so te majhne skupine, 50 do 300 družin, so vedno na obrobju ali robu vasi, rodovitne zemlje ali narodnih parkov, z divjačino. To so naši prvobitni prebivalci v južnoafriškem predelu, so v mnogočem še nomadi. Sedaj, ko mi ni treba več skrbeti za administracijo in koordinacijo velikih programov, bom imela več prilike se bolj približati San ljudem, živeti med njimi dlje časa, čeprav so nekateri kakih 300 km oddaljeni od Serowe; se poglobiti v njih kulturo, njih način življenja in mišljenja. Predvsem pa si želim spoznati njih odnos do Boga, njihove zgodbe o Bogu, odkriti semena in cvetove krščanstva in z njimi podeliti svoje življenje s Kristusom.
Čeprav mnogi razumejo glavni, sečwanski jezik, se bo treba vsaj malo naučiti tudi njihovega jezika, ki pa sestoji iz raznih dialektov. Torej, dovolj izzivov. Se enkrat, Bog povrni, in lepe pozdrave, v Jezusu vdana Zora Škerlj, OS.« Lazarist dr. Janez Puhan iz Farafangane na otoku Madagaskar, se zahvaljuje MZA za pomoč 31. decembra 1994. Že leta deluje v misijonih in kljub doktoratu iz teologije, veje iz njegovega pisma duh predanega misijonarja: »Prisrčna hvala za poslani dar. Tako nas vsako leto obiščete. Bog naj vam povrne ves trud. Mi se bomo pa tudi potrudili, da bomo dano uporabili za lajšanje mizerije naših
ljudi. Saj je te mizerije čedalje več. Včasih so Malgaši živeli v dostojni revščini, danes so pa večinoma v mizeriji. Cerkev naredi, kar največ more. Poleg vsega socialnega dela se dobro zaveda, da je najbolj važno spreminjati človekovo miselnost (metanoja!), človekovo srce, saj vzrok vse revščine je ravno tam.
Madagaskar je naravno bogat, ima mlado prebivalstvo, vse pogoje, da se izvleče iz mizerije, le politične volje ni, pa tudi ljudje so nemotivirani, apatični, ker so bili prevečkrat hudo prevarani. Kaj nam prinaša Novo leto?!
Božični prazniki so bili lepi in dobro obiskani. Upam, da je žalostna ruandska izkušnja dala misliti tudi Cerkvi na Madagaskarju, da se ne bomo zadovoljili le z dobro obiskanim bogoslužjem ob nedeljah, pač pa da bo krščanska misel prežela vsakdanjik. Skrbi me predvsem domača duhovščina. Veliko jih je takih, ‘ki pasejo sami sebe’, iščejo ugodno življenje v duhovništvu. Prav zanima me, kakšna bo ta Cerkev, ko ne bo več tu misijonarjev? Molite za nas!

bomo trije jezuiti, potem bomo lažje planirali in bili skupaj. Ne vem, če sem Ti povedal, da me je moj kompanjon zapustil in, ker je odšel v ZDA brez dovoljenja predstojnikov, nastaja problem, ali bo prišel nazaj ali pa bo ostal ‘a lost shepherd’. Moliva zanj. Je zame in za provinco in naš misijon v Bangladešu kar precejšen šok.
Veš, kaj se je dogodilo s čekom z dne 21. marca za $600, ki si mi ga poslal? Kako je Bog dober. Poštar je pismo zanesel v State Bank in ker je bilo menda ime čudno in banki ne-namenjeno, se je znašlo v košu za smeti. Nekdo pa je neodprto pismo vseeno pobral, odprl ter našel Tvoj ček. Hvala Bogu, zanesel ga je na pravo mesto k p. Tomasu, ki mi je zgodbo povedal. Misijoni imajo pač zaščitnike in ker sem služil Gospodu in se priporočal sv. Antonu Padovancu, sem vse lepo v redu prejel. Še enkrat hvala.

Lemontski odmevi...

Letna seja, občni zbor za »Slovensko kulturno središče v Lemontu«, je bila v nedeljo, 14. maja 1995. Tokrat je bila mala dvorana v novi stavbi že pripravljena. Oznanjeno je bilo, da bo v novembru slovesni blagoslov kulturnega centra in s tem izročen v uporabo: za prireditve, za slovensko šolo itd. Iskrene čestitke odboru, zlasti pa vsem, ki se iz dneva v dan tako pridno trudijo in delajo, da bo čimprej gotovo, pri tem pa narejeno dobro, lepo in umetniško. Bog daj svoj blagoslov vsemu delu in prizadevanju.
Pozno smo zvedeli, da letos obhaja srebrni mašniški jubilej Fr. Jože Božnar, župnik Sv. Vida v Clevelandu. Naše čestitke, gospod Jože, obenem z molitvami, da bi Te Bog ohranil še vnaprej pri zdravju in Ti naklonil vseh potrebnih milosti pri vodstvu osrednje slovenske župnije te dežele. Srebrnomašniški jubilej praznuje letos tudi Fr. Frank Kosem, župnik cerkve St. Jude, Elyria, Ohio. Posebno pozorni smo postali na gospoda Kosma, ko ga je škof James Hickey, sedanji kardinal v Wa-shingtonu, imenoval za svojega tajnika in nato škofijskega kanclerja. Ko Vam, Fr. Frank, čestitamo, Vam želimo še vnaprej zdravja in božjega blagoslova.
Oznanjeno je bilo, da bomo slovenski frančiškani zaradi pomanjkanja osebja in iz zdravstvenih razlogov patrov, žal, morali zapustiti slovensko faro Sv. Jožefa v Jolietu. Patra Atanazij Lovrenčič in David Šrumpf, bosta vnaprej dodeljena lemontskemu samostanu. Dobrodošla v Lemont, p. Atanazij in p. David!
