Dva| razočarana in prestrašena Jezusova učenca zapuščata Jeruzalem. Spotoma se jima | pridruži »neznan tujec«. Potožita mu, kaj jima teži srce. On ju tolaži. Kako? Najprej verjetno čisto po človeško. Mučno zadevo bo treba preboleti in prespati. Vsa navdušena sta pohitela v Jeruzalem in v eni sapi pravila enajsterim in drugim zbranim, kaj sta doživela. Pisma govorijo tudi o nas. Mi smo v njih, naše čase in sedanje dogodke zajemajo. Kristus tudi danes po svojih in naših porazih in zmagah stopa v svojo in našo zmago in slavo. Odtod moč in lepota pisem. Če ne bomo preveč počasni za njihovo razumevanje, bodo ogrevala in bogatila tudi naša srca. BISHOP CROSBY'S MESSAGE FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK, MAY 2-6, 2011 Dear Supporters of Catholic Education, Catholic Education Week is an occasion for us to acknowledge and celebrate the excellence of our Catholic educational institutions at all levels. We are justly proud of what has been achieved and note how the broader community also looks to us as a valued component in the ongoing struggle against ignorance, prejudice and phobias of various kinds. We know how education raises people up from poverty, from indignity, from an aimless and directionless manner of life. It imparts confidence, self-respect and hope, that hope which Pope Benedict so admirably describes for us in his Encyclical "Spe Salvi". In our joy we must always recall that 'we stand on the shoulders of giants'. Catholic Education is the fruit of much historical sacrifice and dedication on the part of our forebears in the Ontario Catholic Community. We think of the humble beginnings of the school system in our Province: the selfless commitment and zeal of those early pioneers in the field, the succession of visionary Bishops, the female and male Religious, the laymen and women who rightly looked upon teaching as a vocation and a high calling which is essentially oblative in nature. They knew what it meant to prepare young people to become not just good citizens but leaders in Canadian society. Immigrant parents from many countries understood that, for their children to thrive and succeed in a new land, they must be equipped with the skills of literacy, numeracy and a sense of sound moral values. The commitment of the Church to Education throughout the centuries and in all nations has been based on the desire to impart the "scientias et virtutes": not just the very best practices and highest standards in the various disciplines of academic study - the "sciences", but also a rounded formation of the whole person illuminated by Faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ -the Christian virtues or "virtutes". In today's very diverse and multicultural social context there are those who, mistakenly in my view, contend that adherence to certain Christian virtues is somehow old-fashioned or even alien to contemporary secular sensibilities. The virtue of chastity is a case in point. For this reason the Bishops of Canada have reminded all Catholics of the enduring and unchanging teaching of the Gospel as to the meaning of human sexuality. Let everyone know that all _í=¡7í Christians, married or single, young or old, whatever their condition of life, are called to respect and live out the virtue of chastity. We are only too aware of our humanity and our frailty: in the words of St. Paul "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". Catholics know the place of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the life of each believer and find solace in the forgiveness which is celebrated in that interface between Christian expectation and our own limitations and failures. As we look not just to the past but into the future, let us resolve to remain faithful to the "Traditio Fidei" - the handing on of the Faith -which underpins our system of schooling and our whole self-understanding as forward-looking, educated Roman Catholics and leaders in the mainstream of Canadian life. I take the occasion to encourage each one of you in your efforts to build up the Kingdom of God here in our beloved Diocese and I am grateful to be working closely with all who are engaged in the promotion and enhancement of Catholic Education. Sincerely in Christ and Mary Immaculate, (Most Rev.) Douglas Crosby, OMI Bishop of Hamilton FS SOCA played an important role last Sunday with its 'Folklore' mass dedicated to a number of past members. On this occasion, a special folklore flag was created that will be used at festivities and events. The shawl for this flag is one that was worn by our member, Tommy Langenfus, and we are proud to have it as a memory to him, and all those who celebrated with us many years ago. This flag will be used by VENEC to continue its pursuit of unifying folklore members from various communities, including our own, here in Hamilton. A special thanks: Over the last couple of weeks, the recently formed FS Venec group has held fundraisers through the sale of butare and a community breakfast. Both events were a great success. Dancers and their families worked tirelessly to help enliven our hall and church. These events would not have been a success without the support and donations of our community; your generosity is greatly appreciated. All money raised from these events will go towards the first set of costumes for VENEC. Much thanks to you all! Special thanks to the following organizations and individuals, for their donations and support for our Breakfast fundraiser: Costco, Durand Residence, E.D. Smith, Krek Slovenian Credit Union, Lococo's, MainWest Massage, Max Landscape, Slovenia Credit Union, Slovenski Park, George Szkurhan, St. Gregory the Great Church & a generous, anonymous donator. Sunday's Readings 3rd Sunday of Easter First Reading Acts 2:14. 22-33 It is the feast of Pentecost and Peter preaches to the gathered crowds about the resurrection of Jesus. Second Reading 1 Peter 1:17-21 It Is through the blood of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, that we now have faith in God. Gospel Luke 24:13-35 Two disciples on the road to Emmaus are joined on the road by the risen Jesus, who explains the scriptures to them and helps them to make sense of his death and why it was necessary. (-\ "And their eyes were opened and they recognised him." V_s Illustration Tim was nine when the last of many foster-care placements began to break down and he was placed in a home where children received special care and help. Tim was a sad and angry young boy who, having been put into care by his mother when he was six, hated the world. He was often sullen and aggressive, though occasionally he revealed a wicked sense of humour and some sparkle. During his time at the home, his carers would arrange for Tim to meet with his mother. Each time it would be the same. Tim would be excited, full of hope and plans, confident that this time things would be different and his mother would want him back. It was a very normal reaction for any child. Each time, however, the pain would be greater. Tim's mother would express her pleasure at seeing him, give him sweets and they would go off for the day. Then it would end and Tim would return, agitated, withdrawn and angry, refusing to talk. His hopes and dreams were once more dashed. It took a great deal of being alongside him, listening to him and helping him to make sense of what had happened to him, before he could move on and begin to live with a different kind of hope. Gospel Teaching Angry, dismayed, disappointed. These are all words that could be used to describe the two disciples travelling on the road to Emmaus whom we hear about in today's Gospel. When they are joined by a stranger, they cannot understand how he does not know of all that has happened, particularly in relation to the death of Jesus. They speak of their dashed hopes and their disappointment that this man they thought was going to change their lives is now dead. Life under Roman rule was not easy and in Jesus his followers had seen an opportunity for change. They had great hopes. So, when Jesus died, they didn't just lose a good friend, someone who really cared for them, they believed they had lost any hope of things being different. The apparent ignorance of the stranger only adds to their frustration. The stranger, however, having listened to their despair, helps them to make sense of their story. By his listening he respects them, empathises with them and, even though he believes they have been "slow to understand", he takes time to explain to them why these / On the road to ELmmaus - Luke 1 5-55 things have happened. As night falls the two disciples decide to rest and invite the man, still a stranger, to stay with them and to eat with them. He agrees and they invite him to bless their food. It is in the moment of blessing and breaking the bread that the disciples recognise their friend, Jesus. Suddenly life takes on a whole new meaning. Their eyes are opened and with understanding they see a way forward. Application The loss of anyone important to us is always painful. A myriad of feelings emerge, often spontaneously and without warning: deep sadness, anger, despair, shock, numbness. It is difficult to see straight or to think clearly. We have to take deep breaths to hold ourselves together. Sometimes talking is not easy. We cannot find the right words to express our deep feelings and it can simply hurt too much. Sharing our experience is, however, an important part of being able to make sense of what has happened to us. It takes time, sometimes a long time, but if we have people who are willing to walk alongside us and support us during this time then slowly, gradually, life can take on a new meaning. Beginning to let go of what we had and seeing a new way of living without this important person is only the start. Healing takes a long time. The journey the disciples make to Emmaus can be seen to symbolise the journey of faith that all of us are on. Sometimes we will experience darkness, and may have a sense that God has abandoned us. At other times, however, often retrospectively, we are able to see clearly where God has been with us, supporting us and guiding us. Reading the scriptures, joining the community to celebrate the Eucharist and seeking spiritual support from others are all key ways to help us make sense of the journey we are on, a journey of faith. It's not just about how these things help us personally - it is about breaking bread together so that we too may recognise Christ in our midst. mmwumwm GARAGE SALE - SLOVENSKA SOLA ♦ SLOVENSKA ŠOLA bo imela »GARAGE SALE« v soboto, 28. maja na cerkvenem parkirišču.
