Furthermore, answers need to be sought also in the connection between physical structures of nature and creations of the human hand, in the conjunction of elements of social activities and processes. A riddle on the true image of the nature of the world and its solution is actually equally exciting as the story about Rarg: 'A land so perfect that the sun never rose until it was absolutely sure that everyone was awake. Everybody was happy in Rarg until one day an astonishing discovery was made that was to change their lives. The Rargians discovered that they are just a dream' ^ [5]. Biologistic society: The inseparable addressing of social, natural, cultural and economic environment can be found in the so called biologistic theories for which it is characteristic to contain factors and mechanisms which occur in biology and have a holistic view of reality. The thesis about society and the reflection of social activity in the common social, natural, cultural and economic environment as a living organism including basic and more complex forms, or as a super-organism, which develops in an organicistic and evolutionistic way, is presented by Spencer [6] as the founder of socio-biology, and Geddes [7] as a biologist and theorist and the father of modern city planning. Organicistic theories about the nature of society were already present in Plato's Republic with the statement that the same laws apply to the individual and to society ... as written by MacDonald [8]. Identical theories are also written in the Manu holy books, namely that castes originated from different parts of the Creator's body [9]. Organicists Lilienfeld [10] and Schäffler even tried to prove that society is in fact an organism, where they tried to find out how the nervous system corresponds with the government, the transport with the vascular system and which organ in the human society would correspond with individual organs in a live organism. J. K. Bluntschli [11] also agrees with their theory, claiming that the state lives as an organic formation or as a combination of legislation and politics, which operate reciprocally. Scientific research studies of organic state formations can also be studied according to the philosophy method and the method of historic facts, considering that the state as a moral organism is not a product of cold logic, as the legislation is not a collection of speculative opinions. [11] The State - homeostatic organism. According to H. Spencer's theory, the state - as an organism - is homeostatic [12], which means that the change in one part triggers a change in other parts in order to keep the system in balance. It develops in a similar way as other organisms in evolution, i.e. from simple forms to more complex ones. The human society, however, is - as an organism - the most perfect evolutionary formation [13]. The concept of creation which operates as an organism is also adopted by Leonardo da Vinci, who is convinced that by knowing the function of the human organism we can apprehend and understand the operation of the entire universe. [14]. Even the condition to create an ideal society was already seen by Renaissance architects in the design of the ideal city, built according to the patterns and measurements of the human proportions, in order to ensure order and harmony [15] to the society through the ideal city structure. The Renaissance thought of the human organism as an ideal city is continued and researched by Patrick Geddes [7]. According to Geddes, the planning has to start with an analysis of real conditions in the region, with resources in the region and the human response to these resources, as well as an analysis of their complex consequences, shown in the cultural landscape. The analysis of real conditions before the actual plan was Geddes's motto. The region represented a basis for the renovation of the social and political life. With this, Geddes provided a substantive framework for the thinking of numerous other regional and other planners [16]. Following Geddes, further research of city structures is adopted and continued by Lewis Mumford whose thinking also influences Frank Lloyd Wright, who is - according to many - the founder of organic architecture and one of the most passionate defenders of regional planning. Organic planning. As a new challenge and response, organic planning is supposed to set on its rails the current chaotic scenario, where urban planners are losing their last battles of a legitimate relationship towards spatial planning. Space should be planned and constructed on the basis of individual needs, individual findings and within a modern development which is not hostile to our natural and cultural heritage. Mumford also presents an argument about how and why these organic-society and space based formations are made: "Due to an increase of brain growth, which directly exceeded the human's direct functional needs, the human was capable of developing new organs outside his body, without being attached - as in other organic adjustments - to an infinite continuation of these organs. By remaining non-specified, man opened a thousand new ways for himself and for a further development." [17] "While other organisms only need as much past as they carry in their genetic codes, and only as much environment as is available, the real human capacity depends on their access to more distant events, those coming from memories or those projected into the future, as well as to more distant or inaccessible parts of the environment. When materialisation is created, it is not possible to achieve with direct efforts any equal quantity of experience within the limits of only one life." [17] "Organic planning does not start with a pre-designed intent; it develops and moves based on individual needs, individual opportunities, in a long line of adjustments that become more and more consistent and efficient, so that in the end they create a complicated final design of a sketch, which is hardly less uniform than the pre-designed geometric pattern." ... "Those who refuse organic plans as unworthy of their name, confuse pure formalism and correctness with efficiency, and incorrectness with spiritual confusion or technical incompetence." [17] Man - the original plan of creation. Also the holistic-sophistic, philosophically oriented anthropocentric view places man in the centre of action. It gives him the role of honour, i.e. seeing man as a plan of everything that exists. Holy geometry or the original plan of creation can be found both in the golden cut as well as in the system of Mandelbrot's [18] fractal and in holographic theory, according to which every part of the holograph contains all necessary information for the description of the overall state. Even Kabbalah comes close to Protagoras's statement that man is the measure/measurement of all things and all processes, when it offers in its tree of life a holistic explanation of man as a microcosm in a macrocosm. Pantheism is not far behind, equating the Creator with the creation -here also the anthropocentric principle needs to be taken into account = man is not only the culmination of creation, but also its master. Still, despite man's presence elsewhere than on Earth, anthropocentrists do not perceive themselves to be masters of the solar system or masters of the universe or the multiverse. The anthropocentric view on man as the master of creation, also adopted by Judaism, Christianity and Islam, can also be compared to the non-compliance of relativism in the sense of awareness that for our existence other forms of life are also important, and that social an mutual relations and the care for nature are not separate elements, considering they are co-dependent and as such reach the whole world within the concept of globalisation. Hypotheses. HYPOTHESIS 1: The creativity of the geo- and bio environment of Nature operates as a workshop where social individuals are the co-creators who - with their social, cultural, and economic interventions in space -structuralistically co-create the developing dynamic supra-organism. HYPOTESIS 2: The geo- and bio- natural structures on Earth with their cycles and development phases, complemented by collective and individualistic adjustments and co-creation of habitat coevolutionary structures, gradually change into more perfect and more sophisticated forms and readable multi-dimensional, and more and more time-concentrated and fragmented projections that allude to the organic evolutionary form of the dominant individual. HYPOTHESIS 3: The antagonistic and reductionistic approach and intervention into space which does not consider the holistic and synergic structurally interdisciplinary and potentially perspective procedures of planning, causes an effect of static and instable inner states that is reflected - in a combination of natural and social habitats - as a statistically critical deviation, where the union of all deviations can also be reflected as a total escalation and collapse of the systems that preserve us, enrich us and develop the past, present and futuristically oriented social and cultural development. HYPOTHESIS 4: Different developmental, multi-dimensional interdisciplinarily shaped forms indicate in a semiotic way and with a conductor orientation the needs and efficiency of planning, which can only result prosperous with adjustments to an individual form, while at the same time the positivity of the first tradition is restored and, if needed, the energy of polarisation annihilation can be enriched and used. HYPOTHESIS 5: The synergy in the guidelines of spatial planning with the use of sophisticated structures of organic planning is the interdisciplinary connection of multilayer levels into a holistic whole, which protects multiculturalism and the habitat bio- and geo- diversity, while specialisations of individual sciences are still implemented in their strict reductionism, which leads to an even more perfect understanding of the whole. PREVIOUS HYPOTHESES: The Earth is a living creature, a hypothesis supported already by numerous thinkers through all historic periods: Pythagoras, Democritus, Plato, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Descartes, the pioneer of modern time, Dr. James Ephraim Lovelock, and others. The Earth fractal and the Homo sapiens sapiens fractal. Even the characteristic feature of the Homo sapiens sapiens fractal is shown in the infinite geometric complex structure, where a certain level of self-similarity is already detected, but not always equally expressed. In certain basics it is expressed as a real or physical fractal, in others as an exact or mathematic fractal. The difference between them is that self-similarity in mathematic fractals only exists on a truly small scale, which means that their fractal structure is expressed also when £ ^ 0, while in real fractals this self-similarity finally ends with a big £. There are a great number of real fractals in nature and some of the typical examples are listed here: mountain ranges, outlines of coasts, clouds, large rivers deltas, cities, network of blood vessels, the heartbeat, ferns, blades of grass, treetops, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. Of course, you will not be able to see self-similarity in these systems without imagination. It is much easier to notice this characteristic in mathematical systems that have fractal solutions for certain parameter values. These systems occur in social and political structures, whose peak is represented by the state homeostatic system where certain formations are already connecting into more highly developed formations that are more easily traceable as visually pure mathematical fractals. However, because the Earth fractal is - as the Homo sapiens sapiens fractal - a time-space fractal, it is also necessary to consider the deviation from the real formation due to the phase age factor [because not all homeostatic formations are completely shaped, this indicates a very early, actually fetal stage of development of the Homo sapiens sapiens.] Behavioural models. A record of apparently complex behaviours of natural phenomena with the use of procedural models [computer programmes] which include actions and autonomous characteristics of virtual worlds - based on repetitive behaviours of birds - was presented by Craig Reynolds with his implementation of the Boids programme [based on 19, 20]. He presented movements on the basis of three basic rules: separation, alignment and cohesion. This kind of approach meant a great step forward in comparison to traditional techniques used in the film industry or, more precisely, in all types of computer animations in the 80s of the previous Century. With the cutting down of numerous lime trees, not only has Slovenian law died out, but also the so-called peak of people's joy, dancing under the lime, called "the dance under the lime" or "the high dance" or "the first paradise dance". The lime tree appears as a holy tree in the tradition of all the ancient Slavs, but only in the Slovenian tradition is it respected as the tree of life. Has King Matthias woken up? King Matthias, the ruler of the Golden Age who has stirred the imagination of Slovenians for centuries, indeed showed up on Mount Peca in 200624- the shape is visible from Topla Dolina Valley25 near 'Crna na Koroskem'26. As in the extant copies of Chretien's tale a long section is devoted to Parzival's friend Gawan and his adventures defending himself from a false murder charge and winning the hand of the maiden Orgeluse. For the subject matter Wolfram von Eschenbach largely adapted the Grail romance, Perceval, the Story of the Grail, left incomplete by Chretien de Troyes. [pic.003] Background and early life Book I opens with the death of King Gandin, Parzival's grandfather. His oldest son, Galoes, receives the kingdom but offers his brother Gahmuret the land of Anjou in fief. However, Gahmuret departs to gain renown. He travels to the African kingdom of Zazamanc, whose capital is besieged by two different armies. Gahmuret offers his services to the city, and his offer is accepted by Queen Belacane. He conquers the invaders, marries Queen Belacane, and becomes king of Zazamanc and Azagouc. Growing bored with peace, Gahmuret steals away on a ship, abandoning his pregnant wife. Belacane later gives birth to a son, Feirefiz (whose skin is mottled black and white). In Book II, Gahmuret returns to the West, where he meets and marries Queen Herzeloyde. Ever restless, however, he soon returns to fight for the Baruch in the Far East, where he is later killed by a treacherous acquaintance. Beginnings of knighthood The first part of the journey takes place completely in the world of King Arthur, where the colourful and strange appearance of Parzival awakens the interest of the court. After becoming entangled in courtly intrigue between Duke Orilus and his wife Jeschute he meets his cousin Sigune who reveals to him his true name. Parzival also fights and kills Ither, the red knight of Kukumerlant. Putting on the red knight's armor he rides away from the court and meets Gurnemanz, from whom he learns the duties of a knight, especially self-control and moderation. Gurnemanz also advises him to avoid impudent curiosity. In Book IV Parzival meets and falls in love with the maiden Condwiramurs when he lends his aid to her town, which is under siege. They marry but he leaves soon afterwards to seek news of his mother. In Book V he arrives at the castle of the Grail. He does not ask his host, the Fisher King Anfortas, about his mysterious wound, however, or about the magical objects paraded before him, remembering Gurnemanz's advice to be not too curious. The next morning Parzival finds himself completely alone in a totally deserted castle, leading him to speculate that his experiences of the previous night were an illusion conjured by malevolent spirits to snare him. f «BESSINS- -'VEJ160ICM45 A wounded knight is found by a knight of King Arthur's court. [pic.004] Return to Arthur's court Parzival returns to the world of Arthur and again meets Sigune, who tells him of how he should have asked the lord of the castle a question, but does not specify. She then vows to never speak to him again. He also meets Jeschute again, who was unwittingly humiliated by him the last time, and defeats Orilus in single combat. Eventually Parzival renews the marriage of Jeschute and Orilus. Parzival returns in Book VI as a perfect potential member of the Round Table to King Arthur. But during a festive meal, Cundrie, messenger of the grail, appears, curses Parzival in the name of the grail and claims that Parzival had lost his honour. Parzival immediately leaves the court even though he is not able to understand his guilt. Gawan takes over as the central figure of Books VII-V name of a false charge of murder. as he tries to clear his A giant brings a prisoner and his horse to King Arthur's tent. Castel Roncolo. [pic.005] The Grail quest In Book IX, we learn that Parzival fights for the good but suffers from his alienation from God. After nearly five years of wandering and fighting, from combat he gains a new horse, owned by a grail knight, and this horse leads him one Good Friday to Trevrizent to whom he introduces himself as a penitent sinner. He stays with this holy man for fourteen days and learns about the hidden meaning of life and the true meaning of the grail, and also is informed that his mother is the sister of the Grail King. He makes a step towards a life of spiritual understanding. Through his loneliness and through his yearning for the grail and for Condwiramurs he puts himself outside the world of Arthur. He is called to another world, that of the grail. Books X-XIV tell of Gawan's attempts to win the hand of the maiden Orgeluse. In Book XV, Parzival fights with a knight who is the first to seem more adept than he. Parzival's sword breaks but, instead of slaying him, the other knight sees no honor in such a feat and both retire to the grass. There they learn that they share the same father. "I was against my own self," says Parzival to Feirefiz, his brother from afar. Again Cundrie appears and proclaims now that Parzival's name has appeared on the grail, marking him as the new grail king. During his journey to the grail in Book XVI Parzival reunites with his wife and takes Feirefiz as a companion. [pic.006] Scholarly debates Some details of the romance have inspired controversy, partly because the narrative is interspersed with humorous anecdotes by Wolfram. It is not clear whether many of the claims he makes are intended to be taken as fact or as jest. For example, in one passage he claims to be totally illiterate: whether the original poem was composed as part of an oral tradition or as a written work is a subject of debate among scholars. Wolfram also claimed that a lost Arabic manuscript by a descendant of Solomon was discovered by a certain Kyot the Provengal, though this may have been his way of parodying the dubious veracity of many other Grail texts. [pic.007] Women in Parzival The place of women in medieval German literature was in general an exalted one and Wolfram as an author reflects this by making womanhood an ideal for his characters. The characters like that of Herzeloyde, Sigune and Condwiramurs are not only intimately involved in Parzival's search but also closely related to the Grail itself. The character of Herzeloyde, Parzival's mother, is a virtuous woman. With a selfless devotion and the humility which is another vital attribute to the Grail King and as a descendent of the Grail family, she makes both the conscious and unconscious choice to guide Parzival on the quest to take his fated place as next in the lineage. Her advice is interpreted in the context of his finding both love and God as guidance towards better being prepared to take on the Grail. The womanly kinship of Sigune is the next guide that Parzival shall encounter. Her appearance (at three times in the tale) is essential and occurs on each occasion at a significant stage in his progress, at a point when he is in urgent need of some kind of guidance. Her first contribution is to provide Parzival his identity, an essential detail for a man that his mother was not able to impart. She directs him to Arthurs's Court, and in doing so heads him off to the quest. In their second meeting she scolds him for failing to understand the nature of his quest and goal, ultimately pushing him to the atonement needed to fully grasp his duty as Grail King. Thirdly, the last meeting of Parzival and Sigune is one of quiet recognition, her life a prayer in itself that anticipates the same state for Parzival. The last woman for Parzival is his wife, Condwiramurs. Her role lies in the "love of a devoted wife. She is interesting in that her vitality lies in what she is, rather than her specific guidance to Parzival. The time that Parzival must recognize his inability to possess her, he leaves her and does not return. Her symbolic significance allows her character to be a guide in terms of the readiness of Parzival. Ultimately, both the Grail and Conwiramurs combine to form Parzival's goal. She spurs him on his quest, and like the Grail itself, is an inspiration and reward. In the end, her guidance is best represented by her name on the Grail as well as Parzival. Castel Roncolo - The illustrated castle [pic.008] is home to the largest cycle of secular frescoes in the world. It tells stories about King Arthur's couregous knights and their adventures, the love story of Tristan and Iseult. A short history In 1237 Alderich Prince-Bishop of Trent, authorized the Lords of Wangen to erect a castle on a rocky slap called "runchenstayn" located at a favourable strategic position. In 1277, after a war against Heinrich Prince-Bishop of Trent, Count Meinhard II of Tyrol took possession of the castle and it was handed over in fief to Gottschalk Knoger of Bolzano. In 1385 the castle was bought by Niklaus and Franz Vintler, descendants of a wealthy merchant family. Niklaus was a reliable man, counsellor and financier of the Count of Tyrol, Duke Leopold III of Austria. Thanks to their wealth the Vintlers could realize their aspirations and achieved a higher standard of living than would have been in accordance with their rank. Parsifal and the Anckhenstein (Borl) Castle The Borl Castle sitting on a sixty meters high rock above the Drava river is one of the largest and most visible feudal buildings in Haloze. It was erected on an important river crossing on the border between Stajerska and Hungary in the beginning of the second millennium. The first written mention of the castle dates from 1255 when the Hungarian king Bela IV gave to Friderik of Ptuj the Anckhenstein (Borl) Castle and two other castles as a fief. [1] The Borl-Anckhenstein castle [pic.001] Owners of the castle frequently changed and included Counts of Ptuj, the king Matthias Corvinus (who heavily demolished the castle upon capture), the Scottish count Leslie, Herbersteins, Thurns, Sauers and others. Borl is the building with the thickest castle walls in this part of Europe - tower being the base of the castle has 12 meters thick stone wall. The inner arcade yard with a Baroque tanker carved in solid rock is an interesting sight to see. The castle chapel of the Holy Trinity (now renovated) and the knights' hall were added in the 17th century. [1] The Borl-Anckhenstein castle [pic.002] The regional court was in the castle between the 13th century and 1850. Many items disappeared from the castle during the Second World War when the castle was a German camp. Borl was a holiday site after the war and was abandoned when the wooden bridge across Drava collapsed. [1] 1681 (G. M. Bornyl means crossing a river in Hungarian, while the German name Anckhenstein means anchor again related to crossing of a river. The legend has it that there is a tunnel under the Drava river between the Borl Castle and the Muretinci Castle, however no one has yet found it. Perhaps you will? Several other legends are related to the castle and one of them is linked to Parsifal and the search for the Holy Grail. [1] L O . Castel Roncolo [pic.005] The first is likely the Red Knight of the Forest of Quinqeroi in Chretien de Troyes' Perceval, the Story of the Grail; he steals a cup from King Arthur and is killed by the protagonist Perceval, who wears his armor and comes to be known as the Red Knight himself. In Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, a retelling of Chretien, the Red Knight is identified as Sir Ither, the Red Knight of Kukumerlant, a cousin to both Arthur and Parzival. He is killed by Sir Gawain. [2] Green Knight, Red Knight, Blue Knight and Black Knight were brothers. [3] Parzifal's transcendental love and the Holy Grail legends Tristan and Isolde [4] The tragic love story of Tristan and Isolde has been told and retold through various stories and manuscripts. It takes place during medieval times during the reign of King Arthur. Isolde of Ireland was the daughter of the King of Ireland. She was betrothed to King Mark of Cornwall. King Mark sent his nephew, Tristan, to Ireland to escort Isolde back to Cornwall. During the voyage, Isolde and Tristan fell forever in love. Isolde did marry Mark of Cornwall, but could not help but love Tristan. The love affair continued after the marriage. When King Mark finally learned of the affair, he forgave Isolde, but Tristan was banned from Cornwall. Tristan went to Brittany. There he met Iseult of Brittany. He was attracted to her because of the similarity of her name to his true love. He married her, but did not consummate the marriage because of his love for the "true" Isolde. [pic.004] Tristan and Isolde Romeo and Juliet [1] In the streets of Verona another brawl breaks out between the servants of the feuding noble families of Capulet and Montague. Benvolio, a Montague, tries to stop the fighting, but is himself embroiled when the rash Capulet, Tybalt, arrives on the scene. After citizens outraged by the constant violence beat back the warring factions, Prince Escalus, the ruler of Verona, attempts to prevent any further conflicts between the families by decreeing death for any individual who disturbs the peace in the future. Romeo, the son of Montague, runs into his cousin Benvolio, who had earlier seen Romeo moping in a grove of sycamores. After some prodding by Benvolio, Romeo confides that he is in love with Rosaline, a woman who does not return his affections. Benvolio counsels him to forget this woman and find another, more beautiful one, but Romeo remains despondent. Meanwhile, Paris, a kinsman of the Prince, seeks Juliet's hand in marriage. Her father Capulet, though happy at the match, asks Paris to wait two years, since Juliet is not yet even fourteen. Capulet dispatches a servant with a list of people to invite to a masquerade and feast he traditionally holds. He invites Paris to the feast, hoping that Paris will begin to win Juliet's heart. Romeo and Benvolio, still discussing Rosaline, encounter the Capulet servant bearing the list of invitations. Benvolio suggests that they attend, since that will allow Romeo to compare his beloved to other beautiful women of Verona. Romeo agrees to go with Benvolio to the feast, but only because Rosaline, whose name he reads on the list, will be there. In Capulet's household, young Juliet talks with her mother, Lady Capulet, and her nurse about the possibility of marrying Paris. Juliet has not yet considered marriage, but agrees to look at Paris during the feast to see if she thinks she could fall in love with him. The feast begins. A melancholy Romeo follows Benvolio and their witty friend Mercutio to Capulet's house. Once inside, Romeo sees Juliet from a distance and instantly falls in love with her; he forgets about Rosaline completely. As Romeo watches Juliet, entranced, a young Capulet, Tybalt, recognizes him, and is enraged that a Montague would sneak into a Capulet feast. He prepares to attack, but Capulet holds him back. Soon, Romeo speaks to Juliet, and the two experience a profound attraction. They kiss, not even knowing each other's names. When he finds out from Juliet's nurse that she is the daughter of Capulet—his family's enemy—he becomes distraught. When Juliet learns that the young man she has just kissed is the son of Montague, she grows equally upset. As Mercutio and Benvolio leave the Capulet estate, Romeo leaps over the orchard wall into the garden, unable to leave Juliet behind. From his hiding place, he sees Juliet in a window above the orchard and hears her speak his name. He calls out to her, and they exchange vows of love. Romeo hurries to see his friend and confessor Friar Lawrence, who, though shocked at the sudden turn of Romeo's heart, agrees to marry the young lovers in secret since he sees in their love the possibility of ending the age-old feud between Capulet and Montague. The following day, Romeo and Juliet meet at Friar Lawrence's cell and are married. The Nurse, who is privy to the secret, procures a ladder, which Romeo will use to climb into Juliet's window for their wedding night. The next day, Benvolio and Mercutio encounter Tybalt—Juliet's cousin—who, still enraged that Romeo attended Capulet's feast, has challenged Romeo to a duel. Romeo appears. Now Tybalt's kinsman by marriage, Romeo begs the Capulet to hold off the duel until he understands why Romeo does not want to fight. Disgusted with this plea for peace, Mercutio says that he will fight Tybalt himself. The two begin to duel. Romeo tries to stop them by leaping between the combatants. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm, and Mercutio dies. Romeo, in a rage, kills Tybalt. Romeo flees from the scene. Soon after, the Prince declares him forever banished from Verona for his crime. Friar Lawrence arranges for Romeo to spend his wedding night with Juliet before he has to leave for Mantua the following morning. In her room, Juliet awaits the arrival of her new husband. The Nurse enters, and, after some confusion, tells Juliet that Romeo has killed Tybalt. Distraught, Juliet suddenly finds herself married to a man who has killed her kinsman. But she resettles herself, and realizes that her duty belongs with her love: to Romeo. Romeo sneaks into Juliet's room that night, and at last they consummate their marriage and their love. Morning comes, and the lovers bid farewell, unsure when they will see each other again. Juliet learns that her father, affected by the recent events, now intends for her to marry Paris in just three days. Unsure of how to proceed—unable to reveal to her parents that she is married to Romeo, but unwilling to marry Paris now that she is Romeo's wife—Juliet asks her nurse for advice. She counsels Juliet to proceed as if Romeo were dead and to marry Paris, who is a better match anyway. Disgusted with the Nurse's disloyalty, Juliet disregards her advice and hurries to Friar Lawrence. He concocts a plan to reunite Juliet with Romeo in Mantua. The night before her wedding to Paris, Juliet must drink a potion that will make her appear to be dead. After she is laid to rest in the family's crypt, the Friar and Romeo will secretly retrieve her, and she will be free to live with Romeo, away from their parents' feuding. Juliet returns home to discover the wedding has been moved ahead one day, and she is to be married tomorrow. That night, Juliet drinks the potion, and the Nurse discovers her, apparently dead, the next morning. The Capulets grieve, and Juliet is entombed according to plan. But Friar Lawrence's message explaining the plan to Romeo never reaches Mantua. Its bearer, Friar John, gets confined to a quarantined house. Romeo hears only that Juliet is dead. Romeo learns only of Juliet's death and decides to kill himself rather than live without her. He buys a vial of poison from a reluctant Apothecary, then speeds back to Verona to take his own life at Juliet's tomb. Outside the Capulet crypt, Romeo comes upon Paris, who is scattering flowers on Juliet's grave. They fight, and Romeo kills Paris. He enters the tomb, sees Juliet's inanimate body, drinks the poison, and dies by her side. Just then, Friar Lawrence enters and realizes that Romeo has killed Paris and himself. At the same time, Juliet awakes. Friar Lawrence hears the coming of the watch. When Juliet refuses to leave with him, he flees alone. Juliet sees her beloved Romeo and realizes he has killed himself with poison. She kisses his poisoned lips, and when that does not kill her, buries his dagger in her chest, falling dead upon his body. The watch arrives, followed closely by the Prince, the Capulets, and Montague. Montague declares that Lady Montague has died of grief over Romeo's exile. Seeing their children's bodies, Capulet and Montague agree to end their long- standing feud and to raise gold statues of their children side-by-side in a newly peaceful Verona. They were very much in love and very happy together. Aristaeus, a Greek god of the land and agriculture, became quite fond of Eurydice, and actively pursued her. While fleeing from Aristaeus, Eurydice ran into a nest of snakes which bit her fatally on her legs. Distraught, Orpheus played such sad songs and sang so mournfully that all the nymphs and gods wept. On their advice, Orpheus traveled to the underworld and by his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone (he was the only person ever to do so), who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth on one condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached the upper world. In his anxiety he forgot that both needed to be in the upper world, and he turned to look at her, and she vanished for the second time, but now forever. They had been banished to live in the forest with his brother, Lakshman, by his stepmother, as she wanted her son to be King. Ravana, the Demon king with ten heads, heard of Sita's beauty and goodness and planned to kidnap her. By magic, he conjured up a golden fawn. She asked Rama to capture it. The demon king disguised himself as an old man and tricked Sita. He kidnapped her and flew away on his chariot back to his island, Lanka. Rama and Lakshman searched many months for Sita. Finally, they asked Hanuman, king of the monkey army, for help. Hanuman could fly. He found Sita imprisoned on the island of Lanka. Hanuman, Rama and Lakshman prepared themselves for battle. This was one of the greatest battles ever seen. The fighting lasted for ten whole days. It looked as though Ravana was going to win, until Rama borrowed a special bow and arrow from the gods. Rama shot Ravana and the battle was won. Sita endures the trial by fire (Agni Pariksha) to prove her chastity. Once she had witnessed the acceptance of her children by Rama, Sita sought final refuge in the arms of her mother Bhumidevi, the Goddess Mother Earth. If she agreed to come, the returning ship's sails would be white, or the sails would be black if she did not agree. Iseult, seeing the white sails, lied to Tristan and told him that the sails were black. He died of grief before Isolde could reach him. Isolde died soon after of a broken heart. Odysseus and Penelope [5] After being torn apart, they wait twenty long years to be reunited. War takes Odysseus away shortly after his marriage to Penelope. Although she has little hope of his return, she resists the 108 suitors who are anxious to replace her husband. Thus, due to the fact that he [Odysseus] had not been faithful, upon his return from the Trojan War, he decides to test the loyalty of his wife. He returns disguised as a beggar and Penelope is not able to identify him. In deed, she tells the disguised Odysseus that any suitor who will defeat his husband, she will agree to marry him. She says "whoever can string Odysseus's rigid bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe shafts may have her hand". In addition, Odysseus tests the level of loyalty to his servants. He goes a step ahead to even kill those servants who had not been faithful to him. This includes even the killing of all the suitors who were in the bid to take his wife away. They were all beautiful, but by far the most beautiful was the youngest, Psyche. She was so beautiful that people began to neglect the worship of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was very jealous, and asked her son Cupid (the boy with the arrows) to make Psyche fall in love with a horrible monster. When he saw how beautiful she was, Cupid dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself, and fell in love with her. Despite her great beauty no-one wanted to marry Psyche. Her parents consulted an oracle, and were told that she was destined to marry a monster, and they were to take her to the top of a mountain and leave her there. The west wind took her and wafted her away to a palace, where she was waited on by invisible servants. When night came her new husband visited her, and told her that he would always visit her by night and she must never try to see him. Although her invisible husband was kind and gentle with her, and the invisible servants attended to her every desire, Psyche grew homesick. She persuaded her husband to allow her sisters to visit her. When they saw how she lived they became very jealous and talked Psyche into peeking at her husband, saying that he was a monster who was fattening her up to be eaten and that her only chance of safety was to kill him. Psyche took a lamp and a knife, but when she saw her beautiful husband, Cupid, she was so surprised she dripped some hot wax onto his shoulder, waking him. He took in the situation at a glance and immediately left Psyche and the magnificent palace she had been living in disappeared in a puff of smoke. Psyche roamed about looking for her husband, and eventually in desperation approached his mother, Venus. Still angry, the goddess set various tasks for Psyche, all of which she passed, with a bit of help from ants and river gods. At last Cupid found out what was going on, and he persuaded Jupiter to order Venus to stop her persecution of Psyche. Then they were married and lived happily ever after - and it really was ever after since Psyche was made a goddess. It can be either an open or closed system. In simple terms, it is a process in which the body's internal environment is kept stable. It was defined by Claude Bernard and later by Walter Bradford Cannon in 1926, 1929 and 1932. Typically used to refer to a living organism, the concept came from that of milieu interieur that was created by Claude Bernard and published in 1865. Multiple dynamic equilibrium adjustment and regulation mechanisms make homeostasis possible. Biological Further information: Human homeostasis With regard to any given life system an organism may be a conformer or a regulator. Regulators try to maintain parameters at a constant level over possibly wide ambient environmental variations. Conformers allow the environment to determine parameters. For instance, endothermic animals (mammals and birds) maintain a constant body temperature, while ectothermic animals (almost all other organisms) exhibit wide body temperature variation. Behavioral adaptations allow ectothermic animals to exert some control over a given parameter. For instance, reptiles often rest on sun-heated rocks in the morning to raise their body temperature. Regulators are also responsive to external circumstances, however: if the same sun-baked boulder happens to host a ground squirrel, the animal's metabolism will adjust to the lesser need for internal heat production. One reason snakes may eat only once a week is that they use much less energy to maintain homeostasis. Most homeostatic regulation is controlled by the release of hormones into the bloodstream. However, other regulatory processes rely on simple diffusion to maintain a balance. Homeostasis includes regulation of the pH of the blood at 7.365 (a measure of alkalinity and acidity). All animals also regulate their blood glucose, as well as the concentration of their blood. Mammals regulate their blood glucose with insulin and glucagon. The human body maintains glucose levels constant most of the day, even after a 24-hour fast. Even during long periods of fasting, glucose levels are reduced only very slightly.[7] Insulin, secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas, effectively transports glucose to the body's cells by instructing those cells to keep more of the glucose for their own use (see Dynamic equilibrium). If the glucose inside the cells is high, the cells will convert it to the insoluble glycogen to prevent the soluble glucose from interfering with cellular metabolism. Control mechanisms All homeostatic control mechanisms have at least three interdependent components for the variable being regulated: The receptor is the sensing component that monitors and responds to changes in the environment. When the receptor senses a stimulus, it sends information to a "control center", the component that sets the range at which a variable is maintained. The control center determines an appropriate response to the stimulus. In most homeostatic mechanisms, the control center is the brain. Unlike negative feedback mechanisms that initiate to maintain or regulate physiological functions within a set and narrow range, the positive feedback mechanisms are designed to push levels out of normal ranges. To achieve this purpose, a series of events initiates a cascading process that builds to increase the effect of the stimulus. This process can be beneficial but is rarely used by the body due to risks of the acceleration's becoming uncontrollable. One positive feedback example event in the body is blood platelet accumulation, which, in turn, causes blood clotting in response to a break or tear in the lining of blood vessels. Another example is the release of oxytocin to intensify the contractions that take place during childbirth. Negative feedback Negative feedback mechanisms consist of reducing the output or activity of any organ or system back to its normal range of functioning. A good example of this is regulating blood pressure. Blood vessels can sense resistance of blood flow against the walls when blood pressure increases. The blood vessels act as the receptors and they relay this message to the brain. The brain then sends a message to the heart and blood vessels, both of which are the effectors. The heart rate would decrease as the blood vessels increase in diameter (known as vasodilation). This change would cause the blood pressure to fall back to its normal range. The opposite would happen when blood pressure decreases, and would cause vasoconstriction. Another important example is seen when the body is deprived of food. The body would then reset the metabolic set point to a lower than normal value. This would allow the body to continue to function, at a slower rate, even though the body is starving. Therefore, people who deprive themselves of food while trying to lose weight would find it easy to shed weight initially and much harder to lose more after. This is due to the body readjusting itself to a lower metabolic set point to allow the body to survive with its low supply of energy. Exercise can change this effect by increasing the metabolic demand. Another good example of negative feedback mechanism is temperature control. The hypothalamus, which monitors the body temperature, is capable of determining even the slightest variation of normal body temperature (37 degrees Celsius). Response to such variation could be stimulation of glands that produce sweat to reduce the temperature or signaling various muscles to shiver to increase body temperature. Both feedbacks are equally important for the healthy functioning of one's body. Complications can arise if any of the two feedbacks are affected or altered in any way. Homeostatic imbalance Many diseases are a result of disturbance of homeostasis, a condition known as homeostatic imbalance. As it ages, every organism will lose efficiency in its control systems. The inefficiencies gradually result in an unstable internal environment that increases the risk for illness. In addition, homeostatic imbalance is also responsible for the physical changes associated with aging. Even more serious than illness and other characteristics of aging is death. Heart failure has been seen where nominal negative feedback mechanisms become overwhelmed, and destructive positive feedback mechanisms then take over. Diseases that result from a homeostatic imbalance include diabetes, dehydration, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, gout, and any disease caused by a toxin present in the bloodstream. All of these conditions result from the presence of an increased amount of a particular substance. In ideal circumstances, homeostatic control mechanisms should prevent this imbalance from occurring, but, in some people, the mechanisms do not work efficiently enough or the quantity of the substance exceeds the levels at which it can be managed. In these cases, medical intervention is necessary to restore the balance, or permanent damage to the organs may result. Varieties The Dynamic Energy Budget theory for metabolic organization delineates structure and (one or more) reserves in an organism. Its formulation is based on three forms of homeostasis: • Strong homeostasis, whereas structure and reserve do not change in composition. Because the amount of reserve and structure can vary, this allows a particular change in the composition of the whole body (as explained by the Dynamic Energy Budget theory). • Weak homeostasis, wherein the ratio of the amounts of reserve and structure becomes constant as long as food availability is constant, even when the organism grows. This means that the whole body composition is constant during growth in constant environments. • Structural homeostasis, wherein the sub-individual structures grow in harmony with the whole individual; the relative proportions of the individuals remain constant. Ecological The concept of homeostasis is central to the topic of Ecological Stoichiometry. There it refers to the relationship between the chemical composition of an organism and the chemical composition of the nutrients it consumes. Stoichiometric homeostasis helps explain nutrient recycling and population dynamics. Historically, ecological succession was seen as having a stable end-stage called the climax (see Frederic Clements), sometimes referred to as the 'potential biodiversity' of a site, shaped primarily by the local climate. This idea has been largely abandoned by modern ecologists in favor of nonequilibrium ideas of how ecosystems function, as most natural ecosystems experience disturbance at a rate that makes a "climax" community unattainable. Only on small, isolated habitats known as ecological islands can the phenomenon be observed. One such case study is the island of Krakatoa after its major eruption in 1883: the established stable homeostasis of the previous forest climax ecosystem was destroyed, and all life was eliminated from the island. In the years after the eruption, Krakatoa went through a sequence of ecological changes in which successive groups of new plant or animal species followed one another, leading to increasing biodiversity and eventually culminating in a re-established climax community. This ecological succession on Krakatoa occurred in a number of stages; a sere is defined as "a stage in a sequence of events by which succession occurs". The complete chain of seres leading to a climax is called a prisere. In the case of Krakatoa, the island reached its climax community, with eight hundred different recorded species, in 1983, one hundred years after the eruption that cleared all life off the island. Evidence confirms that this number has been homeostatic for some time, with the introduction of new species rapidly leading to elimination of old ones. The evidence of Krakatoa, and other disturbed island ecosystems, has confirmed many principles of Island Biogeography, mimicking general principles of ecological succession albeit in a virtually closed system comprised almost exclusively of endemic species. Biosphere In the Gaia hypothesis, James Lovelock stated that the entire mass of living matter on Earth (or any planet with life) functions as a vast homeostatic superorganism that actively modifies its planetary environment to produce the environmental conditions necessary for its own survival. In this view, the entire planet maintains homeostasis. Whether this sort of system is present on Earth is still open to debate. However, some relatively simple homeostatic mechanisms are generally accepted. For example, it is sometimes claimed that when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rise, certain plants are able to grow better and thus act to remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere[dubious " discuss]. However, warming has exacerbated droughts, making water the actual limiting factor on land. When sunlight is plentiful and atmospheric temperature climbs, it has been claimed that the phytoplankton of the ocean surface waters may thrive and produce more dimethyl sulfide, DMS. The DMS molecules act as cloud condensation nuclei, which produce more clouds, and thus increase the atmospheric albedo, and this feeds back to lower the temperature of the atmosphere. However, rising sea temperature has stratified the oceans, separating warm, sunlit waters from cool, nutrient-rich waters. Thus, nutrients have become the limiting factor, and plankton levels have actually fallen over the past 50 years, not risen. As scientists discover more about Earth, vast numbers of positive and negative feedback loops are being discovered, that, together, maintain a metastable condition, sometimes within very broad range of environmental conditions. Environmental pressure, such as competition or change in temperature, can lead to adaptation/extinction of species over time. Reactive Example of use: "Reactive homeostasis is an immediate homeostasic response to a challenge such as predation." However, any homeostasis is impossible without reaction - because homeostasis is and must be a "feedback" phenomenon. The phrase "reactive homeostasis" is simply short for "reactive compensation reestablishing homeostasis", that is to say, "reestablishing a point of homeostasis." - it should not be confused with a separate kind of homeostasis or a distinct phenomenon from homeostasis; it is simply the compensation (or compensatory) phase of homeostasis. Stress Sociologists and psychologists may refer to stress homeostasis, the tendency of a population or an individual to stay at a certain level of stress, often generating artificial stresses if the "natural" level of stress is not enough. Jean-Frangois Lyotard, a postmodern theorist, has applied this term to societal 'power centers' that he describes as being 'governed by a principle of homeostasis,' for example, the scientific hierarchy, which will sometimes ignore a radical new discovery for years because it destabilises previously accepted norms. He states that homeostasis will prevent our body from making drastic changes and maintain stability in our lives even if it is detrimental to us. Examples include when an obese person starts exercising, homeostasis in the body resists the activity to maintain stability. Another example Leonard uses is an unstable family where the father has been a raging alcoholic and suddenly stops and the son starts up a drug habit to maintain stability in the family. Homeostasis is the main factor that stops people changing their habits because our bodies view change as dangerous unless it is very slow. Leonard discusses this dilemma as the media today only encourages fast change and quick results. The opening of his book aptly describes his despair with the current state of the world and how it is at war with homeostasis. "The trouble is that we have few, if any, maps to guide us on the journey or even to show us how to find the path. The modern world, in fact, can be viewed as a prodigious conspiracy against mastery. We're continually bombarded with the promises of immediate gratification, instant success, and fast, temporary relief, all of which lead in exactly the wrong direction." Dictionary - Kelvin-Helmholtz instability From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Numerical simulation of a temporal Kelvin-Helmholtz instability The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (after Lord Kelvin and Hermann von Helmholtz) can occur when there is velocity shear in a single continuous fluid, or where there is a velocity difference across the interface between two fluids. An example is wind blowing over water: The instability manifests in waves on the water surface. More generally, clouds, the ocean, Saturn's bands, Jupiter's Red Spot, and the sun's corona show this instability. The theory predicts the onset of instability and transition to turbulent flow in fluids of different densities moving at various speeds. Helmholtz studied the dynamics of two fluids of different densities when a small disturbance, such as a wave, was introduced at the boundary connecting the fluids. Typically the layer is unstable for Ri<0.25. These effects are common in cloud layers. The study of this instability is applicable in plasma physics, for example in inertial confinement fusion and the plasma-beryllium interface. Numerically, the KH instability is simulated in a temporal or a spatial approach. In the temporal approach, experimenters consider the flow in a periodic (cyclic) box "moving" at mean speed (absolute instability).
