Koliko ljudi izgublja službena mesta prav zaradi tega napredka. O svojem prihodu in življenju v prvem domu SDM sta mi pripovedovala Anica in Janez Zemljič. As I sit here I am pondering over the history of SDM and its past endeavours. Next year we hope to celebrate 60th anniversary. Let us stop for a minute and try to imagine the arrival of first Slovenians to Australia in the early 1950s, and earlier. Total new surroundings, new culture, new language; in most cases no relatives, no friends and a vast distance that separated them from their loved ones and their homeland precluding their dream of turning back. What a treasure of harrowing adventures, therefore we need to be mindful and tolerant if their nostalgia sometimes overcomes them still to this day. Our club was established as a result of just such heart rending and nostalgia. We must never forget this. Anica Facebook.com/Slovenian Association Melbourne DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS There have been some great things happening at the club and some filled with sorrow. We have celebrated Easter, Mothers Day and Slovenia's Day of Independence; events which the committee and members hold in high esteem and proudly celebrate each year. We have also held our regular fortnightly lunches which have been well attended. Unfortunately we have had a number of our dear members experience illness and we have also had members and family pass away. Our long time Secretary Lily Conlan lost her father in law, Clem Conlan. For me, this time has been particularly hard losing my dear godfather, Janez Lah. We wish the best of health to all our members and friends who are touched by illness; please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Annual memberships are currently due - please renew your membership if you haven't already done so, to keep our club as vibrant as ever! Thanks to all the members that have already paid up. This year, membership includes a food voucher that you can redeem at the club at Sunday lunches - enjoy! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have helped in delivering various functions and events at the club this year, assisting at working bees, doing behind the scenes administration and promotional work, and anything else in between; your efforts are much appreciated. A very big thank you to all the committee members for their ongoing commitment to the club; many committee members work full time jobs and still find time to get club work done. Please keep in mind our AGM will be held on Sunday 28th July at 2.00pm. We hope to see as many members as possible attend the meeting to elect a new committee. Please consider nominating for a committee position if you are interested and want to be more involved and further contribute to the Club's future. Wishing you all the best of health and happiness, God Bless! Pozdravu predsednice, Frances Urbas-Johnson, petju, recitacijam in glasbi, katero so nam predstavili Andrew Fistrič, Melissa Fistrič, Anna Tegelj in Helen Trinnick, Vlado Godec, Evie Johnsonin Julia Markič-Smith je sledil nastop Belinde Stopar s partnerjem. Vsredo 22. maja sta obskali SDM delavki iz Viktorijskega muzeja Renata Singer in Dr Helen Light in si ogledali naš arhiv, knjižnico in muzej. Bile sta zelo navdušeni. O njunem mnenju in vtisu si prečitajte sami. Zanimivo kako tujci znajo ceniti naše delo in trud, kot tudi drugih etnišnih skupin. RAZSTAVA LIKOVNIH DEL 2013 Po daljšem času je SDM spet priredilo likovno razstavo pod vodstvom Drage Gelt OAM. Pomagali sta ji Lilly Eggleston-Tomažič, Margaret Reisman, Dragica Gomizel in Anica Kodila. Razstavljalo je 12 otrok in 22 odraslih. Vsa dela so bila zelo lepo razstavljena v gornji dvorani. Milan Balažic VELEPOSLANIK POZDRAVLJENI DRAGI PRIJATELJI My name is Monika Brunacky, member of Australian Slovaks Association in Victoria . Recently I was honored and privileged by an invitation extended to me to participate as a guest artist and a judge in the art exhibition " Colours of Love " dedicated to the celebration of 22nd Anniversary of Slovenian Independence. The exhibition took place at the Slovenian Association Melbourne premises in Research on weekend of 22 & 23.06. 2013. What an exciting experience. From very early communications with one of the organizers, Mrs. Draga Gel, I felt very close to and was incredibly supported and encouraged by her help, for which I am endlessly grateful to her, and also others who helped me throughout the weekend and during my speech to make myself more relaxed . Despite my very anxious nature and fear due to the position I was in, I felt that I was amongst great friends, like between the family. I was very humbled by everyone's welcome and honorable approach towards myself. The whole event made an enormous impression on me for so many reasons. I would like to start with my compliments to the beautiful property of your club in Research that is located in breathtaking surrounding of beautiful Victorian landscape. What a beautiful place to come together for community events and occasions. I had a chance to witness a well organized running of the Art Exhibition " Colours of Love " an event visited by a great numbers of people. I was impressed. I was impressed from what is your club offering for its members. Indoors and outdoors, everything in immaculate condition , with beautiful children's playground and a peaceful view of nearby ranges . A result of great work of people in your community. Running the exhibition in the upper hall had a higher standard then many other art venues . Very well presented and organized. Congratulations! Speaking of a beauty of what your community is about and what they achieved by hard work and unity. I was very much surprised by the number of the artist and their skills. My utmost compliments to each and everyone of them , including children that shared their work, their art. It was very hard to choose the winners, between the different generations and styles presented . I love them all and have a great respect for all artist skills , and wish I could be as good as them. Congratulations to all . Hoping they all also enjoyed viewing other artists' work, compare and understand the beauty that lies in their differences. As mentioned above, this experience made a huge impression on me, not only on personal level but also as a member of our community and will certainly act upon them as best as I can in future. With excitement, I am looking forward to the future cooperation and support between our communities in order to grow, to learn and inspire each other. We support our national uniqueness, existence and pride in our younger generations. They are our future. With deepest gratitude and regards - hvala lepa Monika Brunacky Preserving Our Material Culture for Future Generation Anica,Dr. Helen Light, Renata Singer in Dragica We've all experienced it when someone close dies. If we're lucky there are children and others who want the photographs, the tablecloths and dinner sets - objects brought from the old country or lovingly made in the new. But often the children can't read the language and don't have the space for more stuff in their already crowded homes and lives. And even if they take them, what will happen to these objects in another 20 or 50 years? These very same issues confront ethnic communities, as the pioneers who created and sustained these organizations age, and their membership dwindles. The Multicultural Communities' Collections Project, under the leadership of Dr Helen Light, has teams of researchers visiting ethno-specific groups throughout the greater Melbourne Metropolitan area. Underlying our Project is the belief that the collections of ethnic minority groups in Australia are a critical part of the memory bank of the nation. They must be preserved for future generations if we are to understand our place in the world and explain how this country evolved. As well as noting concerns and needs, and viewing their collections, the Project has encouraged groups to digitally record their collections with training being offered for accessing and utilizing the Victorian Collections database. Starting in June 2012, under the auspices of Museums Australia (Victoria), project teams have visited 20 groups including Polish, Greek, Turkish, Vietnamese, Rumanian, and Chinese. Recently we had the pleasure to visit the Slovenian Club in Research, where we were most warmly welcomed by Draga Gelt, Anica Markic and Dragica Gomizel. This is one of the most impressively catalogued and cared for collections we have seen. There are a number of directions that our Project could take in the future. We intend to hold a workshop/conference in the near future so that we can map out exactly where to go from here to best ensure that the material multicultural heritage is preserved and accessible for future generations. by Renata Singer and Dr Helen Light HELENA LEBER PREMIŠLJUJE Helena Leber in Stephanie Jakovac Ure, dnevi, tedni in meseci hitijo....Mi delujemo, sanjamo in se spominjamo časovne dobe od včeraj do nekoč nazaj. Kdo vanje dvomil, kdo veroval? Kdo jih preziral, zasramoval, kdo streljal vanje? ln za vse prvo in zadnje vprašanje: kdo je zmagal, ko so zmagale sanje?- (Ko so zmagale sanje, smo zmagali vsi!?) Who Dreamt Who dreamt the Slovene dream when it was not allowed to dream? Who dreamt it bold and proud, who was ashamed to do so? Who kept it secret, didn't want to know, who was afraid to admit Who doubted, who believed when it was low? Who despised it, in abuse not slow, who shelled it without esteem? And for all , the first and last question theme: Who won when it turned triumphant, the dream?- (When it turned triumphant, the dream, Did we win?!
