DOMOVIN H AMERICAN IN SPIRIT FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE ONLY AMERICAN HOME SLOVENIAN MORNING DAILY NEWSPAPER NO. 285. CLEVELAND, OHIO, FRIDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 5th, 1.930. LETO XXXII. —VOL. XXXII. Star je bil 48 let in samec. Zapušča brata Pavla in več sorodnikov. 26 policistov obtoženih v New Yorku. 30 nedolžnih žensk je bilo zaprtih New York, 4. decmbra. Pet žensk je danes pred sodnijo izpovedalo, kako so bile prisiljene plačevati visoke nagrade odvetnikom in policijskim uradnikom, in kadar niso plačale, so bile aretirane in ob-dclžene zločinov, katerih niso nikdar povzročile. Komunisti so protestirali radi nezaposlenosti in radi znižanja delavskih plač. V Hamburgu so komunisti umorili enega policista in ranili dva druga. Poštni urad i m a 58 milijonov dolarjev deficita. Albina ga vjame in s smehljajočim obrazom mu ga poda nazaj. — "Boy Scouts" in "Girl Scouts." Oba oddelka sta sedaj v procesu organiziranja. Come on, boys and girls! Let's get going! That's the stuff, girls, put some life into this section of the town! Mr. in Mrs. Vidi-goj sta ga prinesla zadnjo nedeljo v cerkev in sta obljubila mesto njega, da ostane vseskozi dober katoličan. Zribaj jo najprej s peskom in potem splakni. In doktor res vzame posodo in gre k jezeru. "Jaz." Krizman is written for the American Home exclusively. Mr. Krizman has finished hitch-hiking his way around the United States in the settlement of a bet. By JOSEPH A. KRIZMAN (Continuation) At 8 o'clock I stopped at a barbershop where they permitted me to clean up and brush my clothes so as to present respectable appearance at Sing Sing. From here I called up the prison and was told that I would be promptly admitted at 9 o'clock. At Sing Sing At the appointed time I applied at the "Entrance" for admittance into Sing Sing. Upcn showing my credentials to the gatekeeper, I was directed to the office of Warden Lawes. Here I presented my letter from Dr. Thayer, Commissioner of Correction, at Albany, to the warden's secretary. (This letter fully explained to Hon. Lawes why in- Dr. Thayer's estimation . I was a proper party to be shown through the prison.) Mr. Sullivan, a prison guard, was then calletj, and with him I spent the next hour. Sing Sing is a little city by itself with a population of about 2,300 of whom 350 are colored and the rest white. One hundred and ten have established their permanent residence and business address within those high stone walls. All of those whom I have seen appeared to be perfectly contented and .satisfied with their present abode. Those who find time heavy on their hands have the opportunity of earning from 5 to 30 cents a day. The hospital has all the modern equipments that you would expect to find in any hospital. It covers about two floors of a building and there are two big wards. Next we passed through the dining hall, kitchen and bakery. In the bakery we were just a few minutes too late to see the dough mixer's in operation. In the theater, which is big enough to seat all the "residents," there are portable partitions which are used on Sundays to divide the theater in three parts where church services are held for Catholics, Protestants and Jews respectively. In the fourth part the godless have their services. During the week all kinds cf shows are presented, including the "talkies," vaudeville or dramatic performances are given either by local or Broadway talent. On our way to the Death House, Mr. Sullivan pointed out to me the spot where the very night before one prisoner stabbed another in the heart. Then he showed me the victim. Presently we came to a door with the word "Silence" in big letters. We then entered the Death Chamber. Here again, I saw the word "Silence" in two placcs. As I saw the electric chair before me, a chill ran up my spine. After a brief inspection of the room I sat in the chair. Mr. Sullivan and another guard, who is in charge of the Death House, then sccurely fastened me to the chair with all the straps; across my wrists, arms, chest and ankles, and I sat, securely bound, in the very chair where Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray breathed their last—Thrilling? What do you think?— Outside there was a beautiful garden with colorful flowers. As I was approaching the first corner from the prison I saw a machine coming up the hill and recognized its license to be a Cleveland number. I stared at the driver, trying to attract his attention. At that moment his lady companion, who might have been his wife, pointed to the road-sign directing to Sing Sing, I feel certain that he saw me coming from there with the brief case in my hand, but paid no heed to me and drove toward the penitentiary. Since I knew that he would not be allowed' to visit the prison I decided to wait lor him to come back, it being very likely that he was on his way to Hew York City and I could ride with him. When 1 saw him coming back I arose and, motioned to liim to stop, but just as I stepped off the curb into the street, he "stepped on the gas" and shot past me as fast as he cculd accelerate his car.—He thought I was convict just let out. After walking about two miles past the city limits, a young man gave me a ride into New York City. WE'LL BE GETTING BIG-HEADED Struggler President Compliments A. H. J. Staff Nov. 29, 1930. Despite this, we managed to pick up the following answers: Johnny Gribbons (pop dance band leader): "I can't say as yet, but I do hope the Silver Masks cop it, seeing as how I happen to be one of their backers." "Whitey" Kuhar (E. 38th St.): "I pick the Sokols to win, but watch the Spartan team. I bet they wind up in the first division." Miss Molly Kaucnik (Luther Ave.): "I think the Sokols will win again." Frank Gornik (E. I42d St.): "I pick the St. Ann's to win this year—if the breaks are with them." Miss Catherine Snyder (Dibble Ave.): "Whether I'm right or wrong, I don't care, but I'll bet on the Sokols any day." Joseph Rupnik (E. 40th St.): "I'll take a chance on the Flashes." It is an inevitable tradition which prevails as soon as the. cold weather s:ts in and the first snow flurries hit the ground. For the benefit of those readers who do not understand the meaning and purpose of this league, we will expound our intellect and spread before you this important information. The "ol' stove league" sprang into existence a very, very long time ago in the country stores where all the townsmen were wont to gather in the winter time. Here they sat around a net stove munching crackers from a barrel nearby, and gave forth their unlimited opinions and solutions to all the problems confronting this country. , This national pastime is still very much in evidence. Although the larger cities have no general stores where- the men folks can congregate, that docs not deter them for they, all have their different hangouts where they m:et their -cronies and debate all the present situations into the wee hours of the morning amidst cloud? of smoke and the clinking of glasses. All the subjects which stump humanity r.re thoroughly discussed and not a single item is overlooked. Politics, women, depression, prohibition, baseball .football etc. are some of the more impctant problems voiced. Now it is the purpose of this papei tc serve the public and we think we will be doing the members (and \,vho isn't one?) of the stove league a favor by reserving a column for theii opinions every week during the win-, ter months in which the league i? in sessicn. In other words, just throwing a little more fuel on the, fire for the benefit of the exponents As this column is being run on the sport she:t we will discuss athletic problems only. And now to get off to a flying start we'll give you readers the league's opening topic, "What did ycu think of the outcome of the Notre Dame-Southern California game and to whom should the national championship go?" There's a humdinger boys. Win, lose or draw, Notre Dame still has some kind of a claim on the crown. Let's hear how ycu figure it out. We will - discuss many problems with our league friends through this column, that should make a lot of room for arguments. And the more the merrier.
