Vider in priaoatvoval ustanovni soji. Franka Klopčiča v New Berlinu na 15. cesti. Prva nagrada bo $20, druga radio, tretja $5. Potem enako s Clevelandčam — Janko-vicham, Česnom, Zamikom, Petro vichem, Modveškom in z več drugimi iz različnih krujeVi toda človek zgreši imena. Govorili so br. In danes? Na ta način bomo imeli žensko grupo, hrvaško grupo grupo angleško poslujočih fantov, grupo angleško poslujočih deklet in grupo nas starejših dedcev! V Milwaukee ju so res brihtn "človeki." To opazim v nekem drugem dopisu, v katerem je meni namerjena puščica. Ni treba, da bi šel k zdravniku in mu rekel, naj ml pogleda pod čelado, ako je tam še kaj, pred-no bi vedel, kam pes taco moli NI me treba učiti, kakšne so ženske. 53. Three new juvenile applications for membership were accepted—Mary Zadigan, Corinne Sue Hyde, and Courtney Atwater Makela. These new members will help us keep the lead in the SNPJ and give us another little lift toward* our goal of 800. Besides the usual routine of business, and the report on the Prize and Juvenile Picnic, we heard some interesting reports from Frank Zordani, John Rak, and Oscar Godina on their recent vacation trips, and Donald J. Additional gifts have come in for the Prize Picnic from Dr. John J. Zave rtnik, Oscar B. Godina, Michael Prazak, Lucille Spay er, William Putz, and Schwenk Furniture Co. Many more prizes must still be,gotten in order to make up the total prize list. Members are urged to assist in this work. Those who will have charge of the various departments are as follows: Arley Bozicnik at gates; Frank Lotrich and John Rak at the bar; Anna Groser chips; Ida Simon kitchen; Pauline Kline ice-cream; Oscar B. Godina contests and games; John Darovic balina. Tickets have been distributed among the members and we hope for a good publicity campaign in the next ten days to secure d large attendance. Secy. CHICAGO.—Many are wonderiifi why the Integrity Broadcasts do not appear regularly in each week. If we had more action from our membership we could have more news in the Prosveta. May we take as an example our regular monthly meetings. They are so poorly attended you . would be surprised if you attended one. Our meetings should be attended by 30% of the membership, if not more. There is no reason why not. We should have one from each family attend it. because meetings are important to all of us and not only a few. The progress of membership is increasing slowly (could have much better progress In this dept.). To make a real lodge, you older members must also attend the activities of the lodge. If there are some changes made you should know about them; the Pros veto alone Is not enough to inform you because many of the member* do not even look In it—and not mentioning of reading it. Many members do not even know when the lodge meetings are. Why' Because of lack of Interest. Some members do not even think about the lodge until something happens to them In order to get your money's worth If you are thinking you are paying too much, attend the meetings; and if you have good ideas which would benefit you and the lodge, do not be afraid to present them to the membership. The job of being financial secretary for the Loyalites is proving to be one that consumes plenty of time. Trying to continue all those numerous jobs—not listed in the Book of Rules—but which the former financial secretary, Frank Cheligoy assumed is a rather difficult task Another successful event has been added to the Loyalite Book of Pleasant Memories. The SECOND ANNUAL LOYALITE FIELD DAY went over with a bang as per Loyalite tradition. The out-of-towners were among the first arrivals at the SNPJ Recreation Farm where the Field Day was held. Indianapolis said "Hello" first—in fact before we were even up. A carload made Cleveland their headquarters for that weekend. Enroute to the Farm, we met a couple of Goodwill Ambas'* sadors from the Detroit Wolverines —none other than Lefty Kovach and Laddie /Znidar. Lefty and Laddie did a good job of advertising their Wolverine Field Day. They left the Loyalite Field Day long enough to pay the Ohio SNPJ Day in Girard a visit. But nightfall saw them back again in Cleveland. Our Field Day would not have been complete without a delegation from good old Penna. Although they weren't able to be up here for the Field Day, they certainly made up for it at the Loyalite Barn Dance the next evening. We're talking about that congenial group from Penna. composed of the Fabec Girls, Dan Fabec, Margaret McDermott, and good old Slapse. The beautiful weather brought out a very good representation from all the SNPJ lodges from nearby cities and states and also from all the Cleveland lodges. r The Loyalites have been very active in attending SNPJ affairs not only in Ohio but also in Penna, and other States and we certainly appreciated those return visits during our two day celebration at which there were plenty showing the goodwill and cooperation of these different lodges. The Loyalite affair wap a two-day event in order to offer some of the fun and good time to those who for various reasons were unable to attend the first day. To all who helped make the Loyalite Field Day and the Loyalite Barn Dance such tremendous success, we say thanks and we'll be seeing you at your affairs. Only one event marred the completed enjoyment of the two-day celebration. Thut was the uuto wreck in which Loyalites Jean Sitter, husband Bill, and son Billy Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Zupancic were injured while driving home from the Farm. Remembering how hard they all worked for the benefit of the Loyalites, we all were sorry when we learned of the accident. We wish them all a very speedy recovery. We've decided that Lefty Kovach must certainly be an early bird. Imagine waking up in the wee hours of early morning after the Loyalite Field Day ... We missed A1 Peter-nel this year—also the three Musketeers—remember them? A1 Peter-nel, Bob Travnik, and Frank Hribar. Our first acquaintances with them was just exactly one year ugo. Rose i work for the Loyalites as his background, we know that he will not only benefit moat from the Conven-vention but will also be able to contribute a great deal to the meetings. He will do a good job, we feel sure, of expressing the ideals and beliefs of the Loyalites and bringing home a thorough report for the benefit of the other Loyalite members. Dorothy Rosa was chosen as alternate. We would like to suggest that a committee composed of all the Cleveland delegates assemble to dis cuss certain points which will be brought up at the Convention. We'd like to remind all of you ^cribes to plan qn attending the Second Annual Scribes Supper which will be held sometime during the convention. As soon as possible, Johnny Ujcic and Dan Fabec, the co-chairman of event, will announce the exact date. Last year there was quite a good representation at the Supper and we hope that this year there will be an even larger number. DOROTHY ROSS A, 590 Bits from Camp Livingston CAMP LIVINGSTON. LA.— At the request of friends back home, people who anawered my request for correspondence, and even the boys in my outfit, you again find me do ing my best to let you in on what a few Slovene boys are doing in th Army. In answer to a question if we have Slovene cooks in our outfit so that they could fix us some Potltsa and kranjska klobasa (the wine is different story), I muBt say, we do have Slovene boys as cooks, in fact two of them. We still don't think their product could compare with the Potitaa Slovene mothers mak or that store wine could compare with the wine the men make. From home comes news of those Sunday outings, picnics and bulllna games Another question that arose from my last article was, "Who are the other Slovene boys that are in your Battery?" The following are all from Milwaukee and their present address is the same as mine: John Znidar proved herself the super- Qaus, Ray Tevieh, Louis Dragan saleswoman of the day by selling Frank Zokan, Fred Klancnik. I n almost two hundred dollars worth >ti Pi» • of refreshment tickets. However, we noticed she managed to spend quite a bit of time with Wolverines' Laddie Znidar. Jean Sitter, Zora Cheligoy, Mamie Gregorcic, and June Yankovich sold out completely all the food—they certainly know how to cook. Beanie Zupon and brother Stan headed for Penna. in the early afternoon. It was a job asse mbling all those Loyalite members for that group picture—also getting together all the Loyalite trophies und not to forget that beer barrel. I have been waiting some time for another Loyalite picture to fill the vacancy /made when laat year'au^ture was Kent to Girard. All LoyliTite members are invited to buy this pictura to keep in their photo albums,^The pictures are being sold at a dollar per copy and may be had by sending your money to Frank Yankovich The Barn Dance Saturday evening attracted • record-breaking crowd —all the people we had seen the previous day at the Field Day a great many others. We're safe in aaying that everyone had a darn good time, In fact the large crowd forced all the Loyalite« into active duty behind the bar. Patay Krall appeared Just In time to help the very assorted group of barU-nders Justine Pirnat was one of those who worked very hard on both day» -in fact, if we remember correctly, had time off at all. Some of the 910 models, in fact, are better than some of the higher priced sets. The La. layatta and Knight radios retailing at $10 for example, gave better performance than the Garod Model BP* 20 at $24 95. But none of the tiny personal" radios can compare in any way except portability with larger portables or with small home radios retailing at uround the same price, The more expensive personals" are usually equipped for three-way operation—that Is, they can run 1m their own batteries or on ac of dc house current. Unless you plan to plug them In, there's little point in paying for three-way equipment The newest development In portables Is the General Electric radio with storage cell which can be recharged from u car battery or from ac house current. This saves buying new butteries and ulso produces more uniform volume und tone than can be hud with ordlnury battery seta. Some of the larger portubles compare well with average midget radios. I went through the Royal Gorge, and the Colorado Rockies to Salt Lake City where I stopped for one day to see the Mormon Temple, the capitol of Utah, and Salt Lake. I saw the largest cooperative department store which is owned by the Zton Cooperative Mercantile Institute. In the evening the sen of Anton Zor-mk Sr. of Herminie. Pa., Anton Zornik Jr. of Lodge IS took me out to Murray to see Mike Zugel, and John Petrovich, secretary of lodge 12. Our people are copper miners there, and they have small farms in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. From Salt Lake City I went to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I saw legalized gambling. It is as easy to gamble as buying fruit off the side-walk from a vegetable store. Tax on a nick le slot machine is eight dollsrs for three months, snd there is no sales tax in this state. Boulder Dam where Albert Hrast, former supreme board officer, worked while it was being built, is about twenty eight miles from I^as Vegas. Boulder Dsm is across the Colorado river touching the states of Nevsda and Arizona. The river forms the boundary. In brief Boulder Dam is the Isrgest in the world, and it is fourty-fpur «Unies high. Here and everywhere in the west the lend is a desert, snd you csn travel for days in it. In Los Angeles there is a very beautiful union station constructed in Spanish style. I stayed at Philip Mmlej's home in Glendale. Mislej's borne in Europe is in Vipava next door to Frank Zvsnut, president of Planinski Raj of St. Louis, Mo. He was kind enough to see to it thai I could see Msry Mctjasich Moe and her bsby with whom I spent one morning. I saw Mrs. Underdown who is a cousin of John, Albin, snd Charles Rak. Jacob Stonlch of Hollywood who formerly was s Jewelery salesman and is eighty years old related to me about the days when Kerife of New York was the supreme secretary of SNPJ, snd his office was in his home near Garfield Park. Matija Pogorelc, who writes for Prosveta, was alike salesman as was Anton Terbovec, former treasurer of SNPJ. I learned the Ver-tin brothers have quite a business in Calumet. Mich., and Martin Kon-da, former editor of Glas Svobode, has a brother in Poferiville, Calif., who is s successful businessman. Brotlier Stonlch who is s delegate to the coming convention gave me the opportunity to pick my first oranges, grape fruit, and lemons from hta trees in his bsck yard. I was disappointed because I did not get a chance to see Frank Pe-trich, for I wanted to tell him that I thought the articles he had written about the Slovene Socialist movement ih English in Prosveta were very good. I wish he would write in English more sbout those days. Mike Keadnig, formerly of Clarendon Hills, III., Is s gardener, and he is s very excellent guide for Informing you sbout the different plants, trees snd flowers. Laharnar, secretary of lodge 304, snd brother John Stih, president, and Sister Anna Stih, secretary of the English Speaking lodge 681. Brother Stih showed me the Slovenian Dom which is a very good looking building. The meeting room interested me because they sit in a square on an elevated flodr, and the officers sit st both ends of the hsll, The floor is csrpeted except for the center. The Psthfinders meet in s palace. The library or čitalnica is well stocked with books, periodicals, etc., in the center of which is very modern furniture, San Francisco Psthfinders ought to see some other Doms to appreciate theirs. I sure wish the Pioneers Itnois. We arrived an hour earlier than expected. The welcoming of fleers had to be routed from their beds. After our welcome we were signed to companies. We were given an intelligence test, snd an in-noculation for small pox and typhoid feVer. It was the issuing of our uniforms that took my breath away. I was fitted with shoes, socks, trowsers, shirt, two pair of woolen underwear, a uniform blouse, a woolen heavy overcoat, cap, and a rain coat. This fitting took about five minutes and a half. It would have been five minutes flat had I not been so nervous and had been able to tie my shoestrings. One standard grade of carpet wool is up 140% over the pre-war price; and that, ss well as the difficulty of getting enough wool from the Orient, is leading to a larger use of Argentine wool. Formerly, 20% to 2S%^f Argentine wool was all the trl&e felt U could use; now 00% is considered feasible. The Daily News Record comments that some members of the trade regard the situation as not an unmixed evil, since "it furnishes a valid excuse for offering merchandise that is acceptable to the public, under the circumstances, but is not likely to give extended service." Rayon is now being combined with wool in carpet manufacture and its use is probably on the increase. One manufacturer claims, in fact, that rugs made of % wool and % rayon outwear wool rugs in the same price category. Most carpet manufacturers, however, don't yet know exactly what to demand In rayon yarns; and until they have really, made tests and established standards, the blended rugs will be a considerable risk for consumers. 1 » ' BREAD A BUTTER no longer claims itrs a favorable time to buy rugs, since retail prices are already a good deal higher than they were a few months ago and qualities are hard to determine." Blouses and Sweaters - 'The majority ujomen buy blouses because of the style.,, I believe the manufacturers have preserved the style In blouses and the slightly less quality will not be noticed. If the blouses do not wear quite as well as formerly, the difference will be only slight—not enough to bring complaints, but more sales." This is the optimistic view of a store buyer from the South, as quoted in Women's Wear Daily. It will pay this year to examine clothing purchases with much grest-er care than usual for details that will be important after the garments have been worn s few times. The habit of studying mail order catalogs is a good one to get in times of inflation. But if you have never taken it up, you may make some mistakes at first in interpreting words like "standard quality," "good quality," etc. Read the descriptions of merchandise as carefully as possible and notice what they don't say, as well as what they do. Keep in mind, too, that merchandise which is shipped "knocked-down" will have to be put together before it can be used. Shower Curtains If you need new shower curtains, get them before the latest advances in price reach the retail stores. Silk is more expensive (and will be harder to get with the withdrawal of Japanese ships from trade use); rayon is getting scarce with the increase in demand; duck is wsnted for military uses; rubber, synthetic rubber, chemical solvents and processing materials are either higher-priced or hard to get. Trade papers report that new decorative patterns will be available, for the Fall season, however, even if prices are higher and quality perhaps lower. Cocoa is imported from various sources snd there is still a plan to limit the amount which can be brought in from each producing country, under a quota system. Wholessle coffee prices have risen from ft.2S cents a pound to more than 11 cents since a similar quota system went into effect on coffee last November. To (Reprinted by permission of The Sunday Oregonian) Dr. FRANK MUNK, now a lecturer in economics at Reed College, escaped from HIS NATIVE CZE CHOSLOVAKIA after the nazi invasion of Prague. Prior to that time he had served his country in many capacities as an economist, member of the Masaryk academy, and in ecenomic planning. He wrote many books on economic problems prior to his migration to the United States. His latest book, "Economics of Force," published recently in New York, by the use of greater detail and more documentation, deals with the same basic situation discussed in the following article. The volume, now in its second printing, has been extremely well received throughout the nation for the manner In which it defines present economic upheavals now confronting democratic nations of the world. By FRANK MUNK THE FIRST TANKS and armored cars bearing license plates with the sinister letters WH, the forerunners of the German army of invasion, were rattling down the street while I was looking down from the wide, modern windows of my office in Prague. At this moment the door behind me was opened silently and my blonde secretary, Mrs. S., came in. She was an efficient young woman from the bilingual border districts of Czechoslovakia who spoke both Czechoslovakian and German fluently. She came in to inform mo that she was under orders from the new masters and would henceforth have to supervise all my actions. It was the frigid morning of March 18,1030—the fateful "Ides of March." Thus began for me a period of practical acquaintance with subjection and ultimately of slavery that ended only when I escaped several months later. Millions of human beings, more and more every month, however, have come under its spell and even more millions are facing it as a foreboding and dark prospect for the future. At 8 o'clock in the morning I was a free man. Ours was a free nation. At 0:30 o'clock the same morning we were worse than serfs, without any rights whatsoever. For twenty years we lived in the free, democratic republic of Czechoslovakia. We had freedom of the preas, of speech, of religion. We were a happy, prosperous people. From the moment the nazi army invaded Prague every telephone conversation became a hazard. Hundreds of my friends were arrested the first day. Some of them disappeared in the Pankrac prison, others in the concentration camps of Ora-nienburg or Buchenwald, in Germany. Newspapers ceased to be organs of public opinion and became mere propaganda sheets, directed by newly imported nazis or old fifth columnists. Agents, brought in secretly weeks in advance, occupied all banks. Withdrawals of money were prohibited in order to make possible large-scale confiscation.
