In jas sem prepeval v ozadju, prepeval sem ob njuni tišini, kajti ti si postala moj oce in moja mati in sestra. O smrt, ti božja prijateljica!« - (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2005-2006, št. 4) 282 | VESTNIK 2021 284 | VESTNIK 2021 286 | VESTNIK 2021 288 | VESTNIK 2021 290 | VESTNIK 2021 292 | VESTNIK 2021 Illustration One day in mid-1950s China, soldiers locked a village’s parish priest, Pčre Luc, a Frenchman and member of the Society for the Foreign Missions, into the sacristy and went away, thinking that there would be no escape. They left a desecrated church, the shattered, empty tabernacle and the consecrat-ed hosts scattered across the sanctuary. Yet, for a ten-year-old girl named Li, the soldiers’ actions pro-vided the opportunity for outstanding heroism. From his sacristy prison, her parish priest saw the child sneak into the ruined church building and go down on her hands and knees. Unseen by the sol-diers, Li crawled into the sanctuary, where she picked up and swallowed a single host. She repeat-ed this for several days, knowing that she risked her life. One morning, a soldier entered the church, saw Li crawling around and shot her in the back, killing her. The soldier was so appalled at his own act that he released the parish priest and gave him time to bury Li. “Sir, if in every town there was such a little girl, no soldier would ever fight for the Com-munists”, he said, before driving the priest to the border and safety. When Li’s story hit the world’s Catholic media, she became an iconic example of someone whose love for Jesus’ presence in the Eu-charist was more important than life itself. Gospel Teaching In some of the Gospel stories, we can under-stand the confusion of the people who listened to Jesus. They had known him since he was a child, had watched him play and learn alongside their own children; together they had attended the local synagogue and travelled to Jerusalem for the cele-bration of the major Jewish festivals. The same peo-ple knew Mary and Joseph, and had spent time with them at the well and at the market, and they may have visited Joseph’s workshop. They could proba-bly list all the relatives who lived in Nazareth and the outlying villages. How could Jesus claim to be special, to have heavenly origins? It didn’t make sense. In the scene in today’s Gospel, they have just heard Jesus declare that, through him, they could enjoy eternal life. Surely eternal life was in God’s gift, so was this young man saying that he was equal to God, with whom Jesus said that he had a unique relationship? They complained to each other about these unlikely claims. Yet Jesus persisted. He declared himself to be “the living bread”, which they must eat if they wanted to live for ever. Was he inviting them to cannibalism? Were they listening to a madman or to a blasphemer? No wonder they were confused. Jesus’ listeners thought that they knew him, but they didn’t. To use a familiar saying, they were guilty of judging a book by its cover: they saw the man but couldn’t understand his message. This isn’t really surprising: two thousand years later, we are still discovering its meaning, sometimes also arguing about it and sometimes, like Li, finding it more precious than life itself. Application Very few people, if any, can say that they really know us at the very depths of who we are and what we can become. Before Li died protecting the Blessed Sacrament, her parents probably thought their daughter extraordinary only because she was special to them and they loved her so much. As her parents, they probably thought that they knew her – but surely they hadn’t seen her as a future heroine and martyr? The people of Jesus’ home town cer-tainly didn’t see his presence among them as a life-changing event. How many of them thought deeply about his claim that he was “the bread of life” and their route to eternal life? Instead of listening to his words, they rejected them and turned away from Jesus. What about ourselves? Think about the times of lockdown in the Covid-19 pandemic. We discovered that people we’d never really known or noticed per-formed acts of incredible generosity and kindness. Local heroes and heroines seemed to be popping up everywhere. Perhaps we’d never previously realised that our neighbours and even complete strangers had such amazingly big hearts. Time and again, we heard of and saw people who put their own lives on hold in order to care for someone else. They put themselves second and others first. Were we in-spired and encouraged by such goodness? Did it help to make our own life worth living? Isn’t it won-derful to look more deeply than usual into someone else’s heart and to expose the buried treasure? 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Taste and see that the Lord is good. First Reading 1 Kings 19:4-8 Elijah, afraid for his life and discouraged, prays to die but God has other plans for him. Second Reading Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2 We should get rid of all negativity and, in-stead, try to imitate Jesus’ love and for-giveness. Gospel John 6:41-51 Jesus is the bread of life, come down from heaven for the eternal life of all who eat of it. “I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.” Although the weather was hit and miss all weekend, we still managed to have an Awesome August Long Wknd 2021. Jaž se vam žahvalim ža vso pomoc in so-delovanje, pri pionirskem delu gradnje in ustanavljanja ž upnije. O tem so prikazali celo film. V juniju so organizirali izlet ministrantov - mašnih strežnikov v Toronto, kjer si obiskali slovensko župnijo Marije Pomocnice, si ogle-dali živalski vrt in znanstveni muzej. Ivan Dobršek, gospa Marija Suhadolc, gospa Jožica Vegelj, gospa Iva Do-lenc in gospa Marija Krenos. Upamo, da bo šola na ta nacin lepo napredovala.« (Vestnik 29, 1971) TRANSFIGURATION: WE REFLECT CHRIST'S RADI-ANCE BY FR. STEVE RYAN, SDB August 6 is the Feast of the Transfiguration. I love this feast because it honors the “shining” Jesus. His face and His clothes – His whole countenance – was beaming on Mount Tabor. The glorious and radiant Christ was revealed when he took Peter, James and John up that mountain for that special retreat (see Matthew 17:1-9). Jesus’ transformation into glory holds an im-portant message for us. When we hang tight with Him and let Him draw us closer – we become a re-flection of His light and power. This share in His glo-ry energizes us. It transforms us. The rays of his glory fire us up! Jesus is Lord – He is the King of glory and we stand in His light. The Transfiguration is Christ’s shining moment. It’s a prelude to the Resurrection. It comes smack in the middle of heavy duty preaching and mission work for the Lord and His apostles. It really ener-gized them for their ministry. It gave them courage to endure the cross that lay ahead. Can we have a Tabor moment, too? Let’s try to put ourselves into situations where we can experi-ence transformation moments that will energize us. Let’s pray well and catch some “Son”burn where Christ’s radiance enlivens and enlightens us! HIS RADIANCE IS OUR RADIANCE WHEN WE GET CLOSE! August 2021, today, is as good a time as any to draw close and shine. Psalm 34:6 says that those who “look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.” With the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year upon us, let’s all rise and shine! WE CAN – because when we draw close to Him God’s light shines from Him to us. ALLOW JESUS TO SHINE ON YOU. BLESSED CARLO ACUTIS This representation of Carlo Acutis in an Italian church of San Giuseppe in Molfetta, reminds us that holiness is closer than we think. Blessed Carlo Acutis, the 15-year-old beatified last year on October 10 by Pope Francis. His image - in jeans and sneakers - clashes with the traditional stained glass windows to which we are accustomed, and shows that holiness is closer to us than we think. The win-dow, inaugurated last May by Bishop Domenico Cor-nacchia, depicts the 15-year-old Carlo walking in jeans, sneakers, a red windbreaker and a back-pack. He smiles, and his expression shows joy and approachability. He’s instantly recognizable to those who are familiar with the photos of the young man which have become ubiquitous on Catholic internet. The church of San Giuseppe of Molfetta is built on the floor plan of a Latin cross with a nave on ei-ther side. It has four chapels. The church contains images of saints and blesseds who have incarnated the Salesian message, which were commissioned to an Italian artist, Maria Bonaduce. The stained glass windows are made with old-fashioned mouth-blown colored glass. The windows of the chapels on the left represent three saints: St. Philip Neri, St. Francis de Sales, and St. John Bosco. The chapels on the right depict three blesseds: Carlo Acutis, Chiara Badano and Pier Gior-go Frassati. The design chosen for Acutis shows him walking a curved path that indicates his painful journey. He wears a backpack in which he carries a laptop com-puter, his tool for giving testimony. He is illuminat-ed by the Eucharist that guides him like a sun. A contemporary saint This young Italian died in 2006 of acute leuke-mia. During his life, Carlo Acutis was a great fan of video games, and created a website where he pro-moted Eucharistic miracles. He was beatified on October 10, 2020, in Assisi. He’s credited with the miraculous healing of a Brazilian boy who suffered from a congenital mal-formation of the pancreas. Pope Francis mentioned him last March 25 in his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit. In it, the pontiff writes: “Carlo was well aware that the whole apparatus of communications, advertising and social networking can be used to lull us, to make us addicted to consumerism and buying the latest thing on the market, obsessed with our free time, caught up in negativity. Yet he knew how to use the new communications technology to trans-mit the Gospel, to communicate values and beauty.” God’s influencer Thus, as his image in the window shows, Acutis also has a message for young people. In the midst of today’s mindset that invites us to worry only about ourselves and encourages us to satisfy all our de-sires, whatever they may be, Acutis says that “happiness is looking towards God and sad-ness is looking only towards oneself.” “God’s influencer,” as he was known, used social networks to send a completely different message from the one that usually circulates through them. “Why do people care so much about the beauty of their body, and don’t care about the beauty of their soul? A life is truly beautiful only if we come to love God above all else and our neighbor as ourselves.” https://aleteia.org/2021/07/31/carlo-acutis-first-stained-glass-window-in-jeans-and-sneakers/ ZAHVALA DRUŽINE HORVAT - THANK YOU FROM THE HORVAT FAMILY Ob nepricakovani izgubi našega ajteka, Ignaca Horvata, smo bili prica mnogih izrazov dobrote, sožalja od sorodnikov in prijateljev v Kanadi in od drugod.
