Naj vas in vaše župnijske skupnosti spremlja Božji blagoslov. VESTNIK 2016 | 247 VESTNIK 2016 | 249 VESTNIK 2016 | 251 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: You are my chosen portion, O Lord. First Reading 1 Kings 19:16b. 19-21 Elijah is told by the Lord to go and find Eli-sha and anoint him as his successor. Second Reading Galatians 5:1. 13-18 Christ has set us free; therefore we are to stand firm and no longer submit to the yoke of slavery. Gospel Luke 9:51-62 Anyone called by the Lord to follow him is instructed not to come up with any excuses, but simply to follow. “Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Illustration A Redemptorist student had the privilege of working in Lourdes during the summer. He was serving the various English-speaking groups who came to the hostel. During the day he served the meals, cleaned the rooms and did whatever he could to make sure the stay of the group was wonderful. One week a group came who were a bit different from all the other groups, as they looked down their noses at the “staff”. The student did not pay too much attention to this and simply got on with his job. On his day off, he walked into Lourdes and made a pilgrimage, doing all the normal things one would do in Lourdes: the stations of the cross, the Eucharistic procession and the torchlit procession in the evening. On that one day, he wore his Redemptorist habit. At the end of the day, as luck would have it, he saw the bus driver from his hostel waiting to take the group home. They chatted away easily and the Redemptorist student asked if he could get a lift back up the hill. Of course, this was no trouble. As he got on the bus he could feel all eyes looking at him, clearly with some admiration. Two women made space and invited him to sit down. “Good evening, Father,” one said to him. “Good evening,” he re-sponded. “Where are you from, Father?” the woman enquired. The Redemptorist student looked at her and said, “Don’t you recognise me? I have been serving you food all week and cleaning your rooms.” The woman was clearly shocked and said, “Oh good-ness! If only we had known who you were we would have treated you differently!” Gospel Teaching When the Lord calls and says, “Follow me,” the response he is looking for is an immediate one. To the person who says, “Let me go and bury my father first,” Jesus’ reply is quite clear, “Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.” To the per-son who simply asks if he can pop home and say goodbye to his people, which we may con-sider a perfectly reasonable request, Jesus again is star-tlingly clear, “Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the king-dom of God.” There is a popular hymn that uses words from this Gospel, “The foxes have their holes and the swallows have their nests, but the Son of man has no place to lay down.” Despite the cheer-ful tune, the message, if we think about it, is an alarming one. Jesus has nowhere to call his home. So when we read the Gospel today, what do we think? Are we disturbed by Jesus’ seeming impa-tience? Do his demands seem too much? How are we to respond to our Lord? Do the consequences of responding to his call to follow him is a bit scary? Application If we understand Jesus properly there is no reason for us to fear. Jesus is telling his disciples that their business is the proclamation of the kingdom of God. If it is their business, that means it is our busi-ness, here and now. People can often forget that we are in this business together as brothers and sisters. People can sometimes think that they are not the worthy ones and a holier and more qualified person will come along. Jesus is telling us very clearly today that the proclamation of the kingdom is the busi-ness of all of us. In this coming week, look at ways in which you are able to respond to the Lord’s call. Jesus has said to each and every one of us, “Follow me,” and that is why you and I are here at Mass. Let’s not fall into the trap of waiting for a holier-looking person to come along. We ourselves, with God’s holy grace, are the people called by the Lord to follow him. If we be-lieve this, how will we live out our vocation this week? That is a question that each of us is called to answer for ourselves, as each one of us has our own unique and particular vocation. Whatever we may look like, whoever we may be, whether we receive recognition for it in this world or not, we are all called to the business of proclaiming and building up the kingdom of God. MY NAME IS ANA "Hello everyone, my name is Ana Maria Rivera, I am a university student attending Macmaster University, and an active parishioner at All Souls Church. I am here to talk to you today about an amazing opportunity I have this summer. This year I had the privilege to attend a catholic youth's Conference called Rise Up and since then my personal relationship with Jesus Christ has grown stronger and I would like to share this merciful experience with the Youth. This conference was held by Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) and we are a university movement dedicated to the evangelization of young adults. This year I have been accepted into CCO's summer mission project in Krakow, Poland. As part of the Canadian team of missionaries join, our task is to volunteer at various Catechesis sites, concert sites, and have the opportunity to be witnesses of our faith in word and deed. Sharing the clear purpose of our faith with those from around the world. To participate in this mission project, we are responsible as missionaries in to raising a portion of the cost through tax-deductible donations. The total cost of training, accommodations, food and transportation is $3,200. I ask you to prayerfully consider helping me by making a donation. I will be in the main forger after mass; ready to answer any question you have, and accept any donations, it would be of tremendous assistance to me. Thank you for your time and consideration, God bless!" For more information or/and to donate please visit : https://cco.ca/missions/missionaries/ana-rivera-alfonso/.
