V nasprotnem primeru prihaja do razsula človeka in človeštva. Svetpisemske misli današđnje nedelje nam zelo jasno in nazorno govore o ljubezni do Boga in človeka. Jezus mirno, kratko in jasno odvrne: »Ljubi Gospoda, svojega Boga ... To je največja in prva zapoved. Druga je njej enaka: 'Ljubi svojega bližnjega kakor sam sebe.« Preseneča preprostost in jasnost, obenem pa resničnost tega temelja vsega človeškega življenja in človeške družbe. Zgodovina, posebej zadnjih desetletij, to pretresljivo dokazuje. SV. KRST - BAPTISM_ V nedeljo, 19. oktobra 2014 je zakrament sv. krsta na naši cerkvi prejel DECLAN JAMES ZORKO, sin Andrew-ja Zorko in Carol Ann, roj. Williamson. Iskrene čestitke staršema ob krstu tretjega otroka. Naj božji blagoslov in varstvo božje Matere sremlja njuno družino. 30th Sunday of the Year Response: I love you, O Lord, my strength. First Reading Exodus 22:20-26 The provisions of the Law given by Moses apply not only to the Israelites, but must be extended to vulnerable people too: the widow, the orphan and the stranger are singled out for special care. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 Paul tells his readers that they saw how Paul and his companions conducted themselves. Since they follow Paul's example they too are great examples to others. Gospel Matthew 22:34-40 In a summing up of the meaning of the Law, Jesus also shows the true meaning and expression of discipleship. "On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also." Illustration John Mortimer, an English barrister and prolific writer, was probably best known for his Rumpole of the Bailey stories broadcast in the 1970s and 80s on British television. Horace Rumpole is an ageing lawyer who has spent his life defending shady characters in London's Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, and who has never achieved the seniority in the legal profession his wife considers should rightfully be his! As we get to know Horace Rumpole, we can see why: he has done little to endear himself to the great and the good in the British justice system. For example, he has an unfortunate habit of referring to judges who fail to grasp the legal niceties of his arguments as "old darlings". In one episode, Rumpole is asked by the judge to explain his argument. Rumpole indulges in some verbal gymnastics, prompting the judge to interrupt: "Mr Rumpole, I am none the wiser", to which Rumpole replies, "That's as may be, my Lord, but you are at least better informed!" Gospel Teaching Jesus had problems with the legal establishment of his time - the Pharisees, Sadducees and scribes - especially when he taught in the Temple at the end of his ministry. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees try him with the question: "Which is the greatest commandment of the Law?" The issue was not actually about which commandment took precedence over all others. Rather, Jesus was being asked to express an opinion on whether there was a single commandment whose greatness lay in its capacity to sum up the meaning of the whole of the Law, with all 613 of its precepts. It's easy to imagine the endless debates on the subject among the great and the good of the religious leadership: everyone had an opinion on the matter. It is also easy to see how the question must have seemed perfect to trap this amateur preacher who was causing problems with his radical new teaching. Jesus doesn't give a direct answer to the question. Instead, he chooses two commandments: from Deuteronomy and from Leviticus. He says, "on these two commandments hang the whole of the Law and the Prophets". We are reminded of pictures in a gallery, suspended by two chains. Similarly, the two commandments chosen by Jesus are like two chains that uphold the entire Law. The two commandments are well known. First comes a quotation from Deuteronomy 6: "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." The second, from Leviticus 19, resembles it, says Jesus: "You must love your neighbour as yourself." We are left with the question of why Jesus chose these two, and why he says the second resembles the first. One way we can explore this is to consider Jesus' teaching on the conditions of discipleship. To be a disciple, says Jesus, it is necessary to renounce self and take up the cross and follow him. If we take these in reverse order, we see that these amount to the two commandments Jesus cites as summing up the Law, because they are the way that he too lives the Law. Jesus' total commitment to his Father is shown through his taking up of the cross: the cross shows he loves his Father with all his heart, soul, strength and mind. In taking up the cross he renounces himself. He continually places the needs of humanity before his own needs: that is, he loves his neighbour as himself. To be a neighbour is to address the needs of others before one's own needs. So loving God with all our energy, and loving neighbour as self, sums up the Law because it describes perfectly the ministry of Jesus, who is the fulfilment of the Law. Application Returning to the sardonic remark of our literary friend Horace Rumpole, could we say that we are now both better informed and wiser for Jesus' exposition on the true meaning of the Law? Hopefully that answer is "yes". If we follow this pattern of understanding Jesus' choice of these commandments to sum up the Law, we can see that he has also given the principles that underline every aspect of our lives as his disciples. Jesus teaches us to make our prayer an expression of our offering to God of everything we are: heart, soul, strength and mind. And he calls us to let our entire behaviour express our aim to love our neighbour as ourselves.
