In 1930, bowling was a sport in which just a few ladies took part yet the Slovenian Women’s Union members organized their first tournament and called out to other teams to join them. Since that time, the sport has grown in popularity and our teams are bowling throughout the U.S. We salute all of our fine sportswomen. The-Midwest Bowling Tournament will be held in our city, Sheboygan March 11th and 12th. The chair-man, Anne Modiz is anticipating a good number of team entries. We are looking forward to seeing many "rooters” to> cheer for the teams and a large: audience attending the event. Being campaign time, do try and enroll a new member. Despite the bad weather, we had! 35 members in attendance, amongst them some of our bowlers. We had a report from our planning committee, which I am privileged to head, regarding the coming events. If we call upon any of our members to aid us in our projects, 1 am sure they will not be caught wanting. Niext month, we will have a “St. Joseph’s Table” and hope that all of our members will participate by bringing something succulent to whet our appetites. Be sure to remind a member who may forget: March 9th. Our Mother-of-the-Year is Ann Mladic, elected by popular vote. Ann is one of our very devoted workers, besides serving as Vice-President for her second year. She is an excellent choice. A resolution was passed to remember our elder members who have given, without recognition, for many, many years. Among them are Mrs. Frances Sardoch, who was our President many years age; Mrs. Matilda Sever, who is unable to come to our meetings; Mrs. Rasich, who resides in Aurora, and one of our not-so- elderly members who is unable to get out; Angeline Oblak. If you can, please visit and bring some cheer into the lives of these ladies, as well as our other sick members. Our kitchen was staffed by Irene Carter, Kay Turner and Rose Zielinski, with the help of Angie Ko-ziarz. Our birthday party was followed by games which we all enjoyed. Our weather is very dismal, but our hearts should be light and gay with the prospect of Easter and Spring to follow. Our meeting for Jan. was attended by some of the ladies who could come out. Our s.ick members are getting better. Ladies, please call when you are sick. I don’t know if you do not call. Our April meeting will be at the Slovene Center at 2 o’clock; the May meeting will be on the first Sunday due to Mother’s Day on the second. On that day we all want to be with our families. Wishes to all for a Happy Easter. MITZI NO. 12, MILWAUKEE, WIS. Hope this new year is a good one for all. It surely was a nice way to start for us as we had a very good attendance in January in spite of the cold and threatening snowfall. Makes one happy to walk in and see the smiling faces and know that it was all worthwhile. Agnes Morrow, our new vice-president, was the only officer missing but she does live a good way out and warned us not to expect her if conditions weren’t good. Better luck next time, we hope! Prayer in Slovenian started us off Reports were given by the officers, Communications were read, the coming card party at the Lily Club on Sunday April 16th was discussed and settled. Donations are always accepted. It is to be a miscellaneus card party. We got off to a good start with some prizes as well as cash donations towards it for which we are grateftii. December meeting left a lot of our lodge business unsettled so we made it a point to finish the discussions and passed the motions so that there will no longer be any questions on the subject of future members. Should prove to be a lot less doubts now, and we wanted to be sure Jo Wilhelm got all her business settled before giving up her presidency. She did a very good job and it was no more than fair to get final agreements on our local unit. Theresa Sukys was then asked to swear in the new officers as well as the ones who remained from last year. Present w,ere Joseph Krai from Camarillo, California, Matt and Ann Krai from Calumet City, 111. and from South Chicago were Maiy and Leonard Rago, Kay and Bob Jurincie, Ed and Andrea Krai, Fred Krai, Christine and Joe Tomasik and Dolores and Mickey Franko. Josephine’s sister, Frances Wine, attended with her daughters Mary Miohalik and Therese Krause. Also present were her nieces Mary Krznaric and Marge and Sylvia Spretnjak. The following Sunday afternoon a family get-together was held ait daughter Christine’s home. Mr. and Mrs. Krai have eight children, eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. At the party, Mrs. Krai wore the same beautiful gold brocade dress made for her golden wedding anniversary by Antonia Krese. It is the sin-cerest wisih oif her sister members of Br, 16 that tihey will celebrate many more anniversaries. MARGE SPRETNJAK, Reporter NO. 16, SOUTH CHICAGO, ILL Luckily we had no meeting scheduled in January as one of our many snow storms ocurred that evening. President Marge Prebil had enough experience with snow this winter to last a lifetime. After an early Christmas celebration with her family at home, she left with daughters Rosemary Nishlmura and Sister Lois to spend the Christmas holidays at Rosemary’s home in Reading, Pa. Afterwards they spent a week skiing In the Catskills in New York. Everywhere they were met by snowstorms but had a wonderful time. Sr. Lois had to cut her holiday short to return home to Joliet to accept the position of Principal of St. Francis Academy. Congratulations! Congratulations are also in order for Anna and Jacob Buck who celebrated their 60*11 wedding anniversary on January 3rd. They had a quiet celebration at home with daughter Gladys and son, Jack. Mr. and Mrs. Buck have one grandaugh-ter, Mrs. Barbara Ireland, who resides in St. Paul. Minnesota. Sixty years is a long time but Josephine and Marko Krai have topped this record by five years. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on January 12th. Mr. and Mrs. Krai have eight children, eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Our best wishes to both couples for many more years together. After evening mass on January 21, the feast of St. Agnes, the choir at St. George’s Church suddenly started singing “Happy Birthday”. It was in honor of Agnes Cherne, our Charter member, who was present at Mass on her 90th birthday. A group of 100 relatives and friends helped her celebrate afterwards at the Lakeside Inn. Many happy returns, Agnes. We lost a member, Catherine Janes, formerly of Branch 72, on January 2Gth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve and sons, Leo and Peter. Our sincere sympathy is extended to her two daughters, Mary Fischl and Jennie Valeo and their families. Catherine was 92 years old, the grandmother of 9 and great grandmother of 20. Gladys Buck and Marie Livaich attended the funeral services at St. Francis de Sales Church. Our condolences are extended to Mary Sasek whose brother John Fabian died in December in Birmingham, Ala. and to Frances Grotkowski whose brother, Lawrence Bozich from Joliet died in January. Our best wishes for an early recovery go to Millie Skul who was hospitalized in January. Our annual meeting held in December was fairly well-attended, and it was good to see so many smiling faces. The officers were re-elected for the coming or our 50th. year. Minutes were read and accepted. Installation of new officers was held and Mary Intihar was installing chairman. We selected Mother of the Year Mary Sulentich, our oldest member, 90 years of age! She will be 91 this coming May! On our sick list was president, Olga Kluser who had surgery. We all wis'h her a speedy recovery. Congratulations were sent to our newlyweds, Paula Nemgar and Lau-rance Gothardie. We lost two members, Carol Pike and Teresa Mihelich. Our first meeting this year commenced with a full house. After the regular opening prayer and pledge of allegiance, our meeting came to order. The new members who were installed were: Mrs. Rose Paul, mother oif our newly ordained priest, Fr. Thomas Paul, also Lillian Bennett, Lillian Stefanich, Helen Jungles, Victoria Rocks, Sharon Horvat and Dorothy Ciwuinski. The president, Emma Planinšek, asks all members to please go out and bring in new members. Jonita Ruth has, up to now, brought in the greatest number of new members and we should all try to bring in at least one or more and give credit to our Jonita so she will be the top winner for Br. 20. The next Item on the agenda is our Heritage Day for 1978. It will be June 11th at St. Joseph’s park and all members are asked to give their time and help to this wonderful project. Mr. Frank Fedo is asked again to take over the meat department and all that is needed to make this Heritage Day a success. Treasurer, Mary Marolt, Sipoke of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Johanna Marolt who at the age of 88 years is suffering a lingering illness and is hospitalized. Mrs. Theresa Koleto is also ill. Their granddaughter, Sally Christenson was named Player of the Week in Basketball from her local newspaper. AGNES OF SELA PART I “Do you, Agnes Krese, itake this man, John Setlna, to be your lawful wedded husband?” “I do.” Those words were spoken on Nov. 9, 1912, and Still echo in my memory. John and I had lived in the same Catholic parish of Prečna in Slovenia and after meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, it seemed logical and appropriate that wt: marry. He was 26 and I was 23. When we looked into each other’s eyes and whispered words of committment to each other, lititle did we imagine that those marital vows would hind us together through more than 65 years of marriage. Let me turn back the pages of time even further, to December 23, 1889, when I was born in Sela, Slovenia, and where I lived with my parents until the age of eleven, when I moved to Šmihel, a village near the large city of Novo Mesto. For the next year, I remained with my aunt and was enrolled in the convemt school, learning to read and write in German along with the other basic subjects. My second year was sipent in the village of Brod, where I lived In. a furnished room and received board, but no bread. Every week my mother would walk for an hour, pay someone to ferry her across the river and then continue her walk until she reached me with her home-baked loaf of bread. The large round loaf was expected to last 7 days, and by the end of the week became so hard that it was almost impossible to cut much less eat. But I was happy to have even a hard piece of bread to munch on for my lunch at school, because without those morsels there would be nothing to eat. My next move was to Novo Mesto where I resided with a family who also secured work for me as an apprentice in a dry goods store, owned by their daughter. My salary consisted of only the bare necessities of food, clothing, and lodging until my 4th year when a small stipend equivalent to $3.25 per month, in present day American funds, was paid to me. At the age of twenty, 1 made a decisive move to the United States, surprising my two brothers who were residing in Pittsburgh, Pa. Since work was not readily available in 1909, they were quite concerned about my welfare but were finally successful in securing for me a position as cleaning maid in a twenty-room house. My starting salary was $2.00 per week plus room and board the first year and $4„00 the following year. Cleveland, Ohio, became my next destination. Employment was easier to Eind and I was hired by Rymor’S Department Store as a salesgirl, performing the duties for which I had been trained in Slovenia. This tyipe of employment was far more satisfying than domestic work in a boarding house and I remained at Rymor’s nine months when John and I met and were married. My future husband, John Setlna, born on May 15, 188G, in the village of Straža near Novo Mesto, was one of twelve children. The family lived in a small log cabin urtil they were able to afford a larger farm near the village of Kal. Every member of the family (four children had already died) had to work hard to help make a living. One year, a hail storm ruined all the crops which meant that there would be no food on the table the coming year. John traveled regularly to a nearby village to beg for food and fortunately people were generous with offerings of corn, barley, wheat and sometimes even small amounts of money. To add to the bad luck, wheat stored from the previous year spoiled and starvation seemed imminent. The food situation appeared bleak for months but with God’s blessings and the donations of understanding people, the family was able to overcome these difficulties and survive,, The situation in Slovenia did not appear promising and so Mary, John's eldest sister emigrated to the United States followed by John who was 17 years old, and his sister Rose. Floryan decided a few years later to join his brother and sisters. The girls were successful in securing employment but John experienced difficulties until he left the Cleveland area and located a job cutting timber in Davis, West Virginia. That job was short-lived and after the logging camp closed down, he returned to Cleveland. Four years had elapsed since John had left Slovenia and at the age o'f twenty-one he decided to return to his homeland. Being of suitable age and in the very best of health it was necessary for him to full,fill his military obligation and within a few weeks John was drafted •into the Austrian army. After serving a total of four John Setina, the Austrian soldier, at the age of 21, looks handsome in his military uniform. Two of her many favorites are: WALNUT POTICA and BAKED VEAL BREAST WITH ^R-ESiSlNG. At Christmas time Ann UsUally bakes as many as 35 poticas Sive as gifts. Her filling is rich atld nutty using 3 pounds of walnuts. Walnut Potica (Slovenian Nut Roll) 4 K i 9 1 I H 1 2 '/2 2 3 ounces compressed yeast cup lukewarm milk teaspoon sugar °ups sifted flour (about) tablespoon salt teasipoon cinnamon teaspoon nutmeg cup (2 sticks) butter cups scalded milk cup sugar tablespoons brandy or vanilla eSgs, well beaten F||-Ung A: “ cups honey j 1 cup half and half /a Pounds finely ground walnuts ^ tablespoons butter ' teaspoon vanilla Crated rind of 1 lemon ^ eggs, well beaten cups raisins (softened in warm Water and well drained) sprinkled over Filling A. FILLING B: 1£ pounds finely ground walnuts 1 cup sugar 3 teaspoons cinnamon y2 teaspoon nutmeg Half and half — to brush over loaves before baking. DOUGH: In 1 quart bowl, mix yeast, lukewarm milk and 1 teaspoon sugar; set aside in warm place to rise while preparing other ingredients. Sift flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg into large mixing bowl. Scald milk and add butter to hot milk; add y2 cup sugar and brandy; mix together until sugar is dissolved and butter is melted; add eggs and beat well. Add milk-egg mixture and yeast mixture to flour; mix well. If dough is slightly sticky, add only enough flour (about y2 cup) to knead. Knead dough until it is smooth and soft. Place in large greased bowl; cover; set in warm place to double its bulk, (prepare filling at this time.) Cover flat work space (about 5y2 by 3VŽ feet) with large double cloth. Dredge with flour. After dough has doubled it bulk, place it on center of floured cloth; knead slightly. Cover to keep it warm and let rise until doubled again. Roll out dough to cover entire work space. Spread Filling A over dough evenly. Sprinkle raisins over dough. Sprinkle Filling B over dough. Raise side of cloth (from 5*4 f°°t side) and dough will roll itself over and over like a jelly roll. Check to be sure that dough is tightly rolled to avoid air pockets. Slowly continue rolling up like a jelly roll. Cut roll to fit length of bread pans (8y2 by 41/2 by 2y2 inches). Pull ends of dough over cut ends of roll to seal. Place into greased bread pans with flap of dough underneath. (Cutting the roll with the edge of a plate will seal the ends automatically). Let rise 1 hour. Brush half and half over tops of loaves before baking. Bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes to 1 hour, Makes about 7 loaves. Note: Absolutely delicious! Ex- cellent instructions. — HERMINE. Baked Veal Breast with Dressing You’ll enjoy this very special dressing. 4 pound veal breast Salt Pepper 1 veal heart 12 one-day old plain hard rolls (about 3y2 inches in diameter) y2 pound butter 1 small onion, chopped 1 cup chopped celery 4 tablespoons chopped parsley Salt and pepper to taste 5 eggs, slightly beaten 2 teaspoons cinnamon y2 teaspoon poultry seasoning Butter (for over surface) Flour (for coating veal breast) Milk (for basting) Have butcher make generous pocket in veal breast. Rub cavity and outside of veal breast with salt and pepper. DRESSING: Cook veal heart at slow boil about iy2 hours, or until tender; dice into small cubes. Cube rolls and place in large bowl. In fry pan melt y2 pound butter; add chopped onion, celery, parsley and cubed veal heart. Saute about 10 minutes; add salt and pepper to taste. Add sauteed mixture to bread cubes, mix lightly. Add beaten eggs, cinnamon and poultry seasoning and combine ingredients. Lightly stuff veal breast pocket with dressing. Skewer or tie. Rub butter over surface of veal breast. Dredge with flour. Bake at 350 degrees in covered roasting pan about 2 hours. Baste from time to time with small amounts of milk. Makes 6 servings. Note: Extra dressing can be baked in small covered casserole dish the last 15 minutes. In lieu of veal heart, chicken hearts, gizzards, or livers or any combination of these can be used. She was born March 4, 1996 at Laze, in Slovenia and lived in Chisholm since 1913. The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St, Joseph’s Church, Chisholm, and in attendance were many friends and many members of our SWU Branch No. 38. Father William Pider was the celebrant of the Mass, and six young men, grandchildren of Anna, were her pall bearers. A very moving moment came at the end of t'he Mass, when (a capella), the members of the S.W.U. sang “češčena Si Marija” as the grandsons walked down the aisle beside No. 35: have a “Great Day”. We have many surprises in store for you that “Day!” Our annual Bake Sale will be Sunday, March 19th after both morning masses. Our ladies are good bakers so we plan a good sale. MILDRED JAMES Members of Washington Br. 103 Mourn Spiritual Advisor The members of Br, 103, mourn the loss oif our beloved Spiritual Advisor, Father Franc Blatnik who was called to his eternal rest on December 23, 1977. Each month found him making the trip from Paterson, New Jersey to say Mass at the Slovenian Chapel of Our Lady of Brezje at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, even tho in later years he did not always fee! well. 1977 marked the Golden Anniversary of his Priesthood and a lifetime of service to his fellow man. He was kind, fair and considerate in hi« interaction with others. He served us in many ways, in times of worship, joy and sorrow. He was always at home among us. Perhaps the greatest tribute to him is that those of us associated with him over these many years will always remember him. A Memorial Mass was held at the Slovenian Chapel on Sunday January 9th. 1978. * * * Our Installation of Officers was held on Sunday, January 9th, 1978. Fr. Raymond Wadas of St. Bernard’s Parish, Riverdale, Maryland, was our honored guesit. It was a pleasure to meet him and we thank him for being so generous with his time on such a stormy day. Two Editors who have brought clarity and understanding to Slovenian language study This montii we are proud to bring to your attention, the work of two young women who are the editors of the two Slovenian Language Manuals that have become the best teaching aids for Slovenian language schools throughout the country. Praised for their clarity and the ease with which they present the Slovenian language to students, these books are now on the market and available to Individuals as well as groups. There has been a lack of this kind of material in our American communities where there are many families with school-age children, and in places where serious students of history, language;, and culture search for teaching methods. The Osenar sisters, both born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, are teachers in two Cleveland schools and have impressive educational credits themselves. Milena, married to Dr. Edward Gobetz, is teaching at St. Mary’s grammar school in Collinrwood. This is part of her background. Wilena QoU. Mrs. Milena Gobetz, nee Osenar, born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, came to the United States in 1950 at the age of 11. She graduated with honors from Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland, Ohio, and was presented Auxilium Latinum, a gold medal, in a nationwide scholastic competition. After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts Degree, cum laude, from Ursuline College and Master of Arts Degree in Romance Languages from Western Reserve University, she continued her studies at Laval University in Quebec, Canada, and Sorbonne University in Paris, France, where she received University Award for top scholastic performance. Past secretary and treasurer of the 'Slovenian Academic Society SAVA and current secretary and associate director for Curriculum Development of the Slovenian American Institute — The Slovenian Research Center of America, Mrs. Gobetz taught French, Latin and Slovenian in Greater Cleveland high school and adult education programs. She is senior author of the Slovenian Language Manual, Volume I, with two additional volumes now in print. Author of a monthly column on Slovenian heritage in the ZARJA-DAWN magazine, published by the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, she is the mother of Emily, 10, Maria, 8, and Margaret, 3. (/-Jreaa oLoncar Breda Loncar is a graduate of Notre Dame College, having completed her elementary education at St. Vitus School and later at the Notre Dame Academy. In addition, she took undergraduate courses at John Carroll University in Cleveland and the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Her teaching degree and certificates in English, French and German languages followed by a career in teaching for the Cleveland Board of Education Adult-Education Program in their Citizenship Program and then, later as a staff member at East High School weli-qualifies her as a cc-mpetenit language teacher. Mrs. Loncar spent several years teaching in the Slovenian language schools connected with St. Vitus Parish and as she hersel'f says, was forced to present original material for her students as there were no other text books available to be followed strictly, "In the spring of 1971, I began teaching at Mayfield Senior High. I taught Beginning Slovenian and Advanced English to foreigners. There were two classes of Beginning Slovenian because so many people had enrolled. I began using the text Zakaj ne po slovensko, but after the fourth class stopped using the book and began developing my own materials. I have many students who can verify this. I taught all of 1972 and through spring of 1973, when my fourth pregnancy forced me to leave. During this time so many students had flocked to these courses, that I called my sister to help me. We then grouped the students into the three categories, according to their knowledge of the language. I initiated a SUMMER PROGRAM between 1971-1972. Many students took part in it.” We are happy that she and her sister did have the inspiration and knowledge to carry out the challenge and effort of producing such a worthwhile addition to the teaching library of our Slovenian language schools and for the benefit of many individuals. Presently, Mrs. Loncar is teaching the 4th grade at St. Vitus Slovenian School. She is the moither of four children and has contributed greatly to the cultural lile of young Slovenians in the Cleveland area. Ustregla je, a Pajprvo je napisala življenjepis svoje matere, ALBINE OSENAR, ki je prišla v Ameriko leta 1950 kot vdova s tremi otroci, enega pa je morala doma pustiti radi bolezni. Pozneje je prišel tudi ta za materjo v Ameriko. Gospa Osenar je delala “piece work” v tovarni, kjer ■’e za skromno plačo šivala osiem ur na dan, zvečer pa Ustila pisarne. Pri tem delu sta ji hčerki pomagali. Lplale so in se trudile, da bi prej zaslužile predplačilo *a svoj mali domek.—Otroci so se mladi naučili delati *,! mama je skrbela za najboljšo šolsko izobrazbo, ki jo zmogla. Edward Gobetz, (Gobec) mi je zaupal, 'l nobena izmed sester ni za svoje velikansko delo Jl’ejela niti en “dajm”, pač pa gre ves denar, ki ga ’ejinejo za knjige v tiskovni sklad namenjen za tiskanje ‘hodnjih knjig. Take požrtvovalnosti menda ne najde- 1,0 nikjer na svetu. Milena piše lepe članke v našo ZARJO ter je mati treh deklic; Emily stara 10 let, Maria 8 let, Margaret 3 leta. Prvi dve že znata spisati male otroške zgodbice, najmlajša pa njih predavanja kar zdrdra. Vkljub obilemu delu gospa Gobetz še vedno uči slovenščino zadnja dva razreda v farni šoli Marije Vne-bovzetie. Poleg tega je tajnica Slovenskega Inštituta, ki je UČBENIK izdal. Njen soprog, Edward, je Inštitut ustanovil ter ga uspešno vodi nad 25 let. On, kot njegova žena, delata narodno delo popolnoma brezplačno-iz ljubezni do slovenske dediščine. BREDA OSENAR LONČAR je graduirala iz slovenske šole Sv. Vida v Clevelandu ter z odliko izvršila Notre Dame Academy in Notre Dame kolegij ter se šolala v posebnih tečajih na John Carroll univerzi in Sorbonne univerzi v Parizu, Francija. Breda je prejela certifikat učiteljstva v angleščini, francoščini in nemščini ter pričela te jezike v letu 1963 poučevati pod načelstvom Cleveland Board of Education. Učila je največ priseljene Slovence ter pričetni tečaj v angleščini. Za ta razred se je priglasilo toliko ljudi, da jih je morala razdeliti v dva razreda. V ta namen so imeli sobo pod cerkvijo Sv. Vida. Jeseni leta 19G3 je Breda pričela učiti v East High School angleščino in francoščino. Dve leti je učila nakar je morala prenehati radi noseštva. Pisateljice učbenika Slovenskega jezika, sestri BREDA LONČAR na levi in MILENA GOBEC, pregledujeta novo knjigo, ki je pripravljena, da odpotuje na vse kontinente sveta. Ko je sinček bil star dve leti je Breda pričela učiti o^nii in deveti razred v slovenski šoVi Sv. Vida. Učila je dve leti, ko je zopet postala mati in je morala učenje prekiniti. Takrat je imela namen sestaviti svoj lasten tekst za poučevanje, ker je četrti razred prenehal rabiti knjigo “Zakaj Ne Po Slovensko". Breda je zanaprej vedno rabila svoj lasten način poučevanja, ki ga je razred z zadovoljstvom sprejel in ga označil za boljšega, kar so dosedaj imeli. Spomladi leta 1971 je Breda pričela učiti na Mayfield Senior High School. Učila je slovenščino in angleščino. Učila je vso leto 1971 in 1972, ko je zopet morala z učenjem prenehati radi materinstva. Zdaj poučuje četrti razred v slovenski farni šoli Sv. Vida. Obe učiteljici se za pouk zelo dobro pripravita, zato sta priljubljeni pri otrocih in odrastllh. K uspehom obema prisrčno čestitamo! DOPISI PODR. 2, CHICAGO, ILL. Seja v januarju je bila določena, da se izvedejo volitve za odbor v letu 1978. Sejo je vodila podpredsednica Ann Mladic namesto obolele predsednice. Vsaka od odbornic je podala svoje poročilo. Preteklo leto je bilo uspešno in članicam v zadovoljstvo. Tajnica je tudi prebrala zahvalo naše 90 letne Ančke Ahačič za njej prirejeno praznovanje in za darila, Mici Krapenc je poročala, da imamo te dni še eno devetdeset-letno in sicer Pavlo Ožbolt ki že precej let živi v Nursing Home. Svoje dni je bila zelo delavna in priljubljena pri vseh članicah; še sedaj je vedra in nikoli ne toži. Odbor pooblasti Mici Krapenc, da kupi darilo in ji častita v imenu vseh članic. Pri volitvah za novi odbor so kar vse prisotne izrekle željo, naj ostane stari. Tako imamo sedaj: duhovni vodja župnik p. Klavdij Okorn; predsednica Shirley Melissa; podpredsednica Ann Mladic; tajnica Jean Zu-bek; blagajničarka Lili Pucel; zapisnikarica Ann Scieszka; poročevalki Mary Muller in Anna Gaber (nova); preglednice, Ann Yucko, Mary Podder, in Elsie Statkus. Za povezavo bolnim članicam in obiske Frances žibert. Članice naše podružnice smo sedaj tako srečne, da dopise Zvezinega duh. vodja p. Klavdija ne samo beremo, ampak ga tudi poslušamo. Ker se zelo zanima za naše delo, prihaja na naše seje. To nas zelo vzpodbuja. Ko je urednica Corinne Leskovar izrekla željo, da bi starejše članice, ki imajo toliko spominov še iz stare domovine in od prihoda v Ameriko, pisale to v Zarjo, se je on oglasil k besedi. Slovenci smo iz starih krščanskih korenin. Naša vera in z njo zvezana kultura sita nad 1000 let stari. Iz te dobre dediščine izvira dobro ljudstvo. Poznamo našega svetniškega Friderika Baraga. Iz .te slovenske dediščine izvirate tudi ve, žene. Skrbite po družinah za pravo družinsko krščansko življenje in za mir. Same vidite, koliko zla je po družinah, kjer nimajo vere. Koncem januarja smo imeli v Chicagu Baragov dan. Seja v februarju je bila v znamenju "Valentine day”. Druga drugi smo izrazile svoje prijateljstvo. Lepo je v društvu, kjer vlada ljubezen. Zunaj je pa letos mraz in preveč snega. Tega je toliko, da korakamo po pločnikih mimo velikih kupov in se čudimo. Snega se kar ne moremo znebiti in še kar vedno naletava. Le kdaj bo letos pomlad? KATHERINE ŠUŠTARIČ, Berkeley, California jih pa pride, kažejo veliko volje za delo in uspeh. 90-letna Pavla Ožbolt se je ganjena zahvalila za dar ob njenem praznovanju. Koliko radosti prinesejo male pozornosti starejšim ali bolnim ljudem. Ne pozabljajmo jih! Pregled dela v spomladanskih mesecih: v marcu imamo praznik sv. Jožefa; nekatere tega svetnika zelo častijo. Za sejo bodo članice pripravile St. Joseph’s table. Naša skupina kegljačič (bowling group) se bo 11. in 12. marca udeležila tekmovanja v Sheboygnu. želimo mnogo uspeha! Smo v postu. Beremo, kako resno so naši predniki vzeli postni čas. Vedeti moramo, da post ni samo koristen za dušo, koristen je tudi za telo. Zdravniki post močnejšim ljudem zelo priporočajo. Frances Simonič, je še vedno tajnica in Josephine Rimes je zapisnikarica. Seje bodo v bodoče vsako prvo sredo v mesecu ob 1 uri popoldne. Določeno je bilo, da v primeru mraza, seja odpade do prihodnjega meseca. Prečitano je bilo božično voščilo č. preds. Marie Pri-s'and in gl. preds, Mary Bostian ter moja malenkost. Po letni seji smo imele prigrizek in domačo zabavo. Mary Dinero nas vedno preseneti s priboljškom peciva. Thank you, Mary! Zelo bomo pogrešale M. Guzol, ki je bila vestna predsednica. Bila je požrtvovalna in kot pravi pregovor: levica ni znala kaj deli desnica. Hvaležne smo ji za dar, ročno izdelan afgan, krasno delo, kar je bilo prodano na listke v korist blagajne. Mary, prejmi izraze naše hvaležnosti in naj tl Bog vrne ljubo zdravje. V času tega pisanja je Mary G. v bolnici na pregledu. Naše Kuharske knjige so še vedno v prodaji v novi obleki z navodili receptov. Sporočam, da je naša cake-potica prejela prvo nagrado na naši državni razstavi (State Fair) v zadnji jeseni. V decembru je prejela odlično prvo nagrado Dalika oblečena v slovensko narodno nošo. Vse ročno šivane obleke, je bilo delo Pauline Vidmar. Vsako leto imamo v eni Banki razstavljene različne narodne noše teh dalik, katere pozneje razdele za Božična darila siromašnim otrokom. Pauline, hvala ti! Ponosne smo za vsako priznanje, katero dobijo naši Slovenci, čestitke! Pozdrav moji dolgoletni prijateljici in soses. Julia Skrabec, ki se je preselila v Westminster, Colo. v bližini Denverja. Pravi, da pogreša svoje znance v Pueblo, posebno svojo sestro Christine Konte in njeno družino, ki sedaj živi v Canon City, skoraj bi omenila, da je soseda državne kaznilnice, želimo, da se Christine K. preds. podr. št. 66, kaj oglasi v naši Zarji, mogoče bo podr. kaj oživela, tako tudi podr. št. 63 v Den-verju. Ako še nikdar niste imeli problemov z vašim hrbtom, potem se lahko počutite srečni — ker ste ena oseba med maloštevilnimi, brez hrbtnih bolečin. Navadna bolečina v hrbtu je prehlad. Hrbtenica je upogljiv steber vretenc, kateri podpirajo ali takorekoč nosijo naše telo v pokončnem položaju, v gibljivi poziciji naprej, nazaj, kot tudi stranski poziciji. Kaj pravzaprav povzroča hrbtne bolečine? Razlogov je nešteto: nepravilna poza ali drža, delovno področje v neravnem terenu, stoli, kateri se ne prilagode višini sedečega, nenaden neroden premik, ali pa premalo ali pretirano telesno gibanje. Mnogo zdravnikov trdi, da kot čiri ali gnonjenje, pogosto čustveno razburjanje tudi lahko povzroča hrbtne bolečine. S starostjo se včasih pojavljajo strukturni problemi, ker tudi hrbtenica pokaže posledice življensko dolge rabe. Hrbtenične mišice lahko prime krč, katerega bolečine lahko alajšamo s počitkom, ali pa z vročimi obkladki. Kako lahko pomagamo hrbtu preprečiti bolečine? Prakticirajmo pravilno telesno pozo, več hodimo, ko stojimo ali sedimo naj bo glava v skladu s hrbtenico, ne dvigajmo reči katere so preteške za nas in ko se sklonimo, da kaj poberemo, moramo upogniti kolena. Trd sedež z ravnim naslonjačem je našemu hrbtu bolj primeren kot kakšen nizek in mehak stol. Ako hrbtne bolečine ne popuste stopite v stik z zdravnikom čimprej. Da ojačimo prožnost mišic, katere vežejo hrbtenico, je sedaj priporočana vrsta telesnih vaj. Vaš krajevni člen YMOA je pred kratkim pričel s programom učenja teh vaj in s tem nudi ljudem pomoč, da se znebe pogostih bolečin. Nje-110 življenje zadnjih let je bilo polno ^Oljenja in žalosti. Bila je vedno v6sela mojih obiskov, samo smrti si te želela. Bog je uslišal njeno proš-nte. Bila je verna in dobra za vse in skrbna mati svoji družini, čla. °lga Mohar, je po dolgi bolezni izbila še mladega moža Jožeta M. ^ra slovesa je kruto odbila, odkoder ni Več vrnitve. Naš župnik Fr. Blane je za Božične Baznike zopet krasno okinčal cerkev. Hvaležne smo mu za ;ep pogled na jaslice in cvetje. Naša dekleta so pele pri vse mašah prelene božične pesmi, katere nam ostanejo v spominu. Ko pride mesečna Zarja do nas v marcu, bo že lepa pomlad kazala svojo krasno naravo cvetlic in zelenja po vrtovih in poljih. Vsem dragim sosestram naše SŽZ, vse najboljše v letu 1978. Že dalj časa je bolana Mary Su-sitaršič, kakor tudi Mary Grill v Ge-nevi, Ohio, V bolnišnici je bila Antonija Susitar in sedaj se zdravi doma. Roko si je pri padcu zlomila Frances Opara in Paula Bpstjančič, Vsem želimo hitrega zdravja! Sedaj pa veselo novico: Mary Koljat je postala prastara mama že četrtič. Iskrene čestitke! To je bila prva seja v letu in je bila zelo dobro obiskana, tako da smo morale prinesti še stole iz sosednje dvorane. Naslednje nove članice so bile zaprisežene: Rose Paul (mati našega novega duhovnika. Rev. Thomas Paul ki je bral v novembru prvo mašo), dalje Lillian Bennett, Lillian Stefa-nlch, Helen Jengles, Victoria Rocksm, Sheron Horvat in Dorothy Ciuyizen-ski. Preds. Emma Planinšek vzpodbuja članice, da se potrudijo in pridobijo še več novih članic, kakor se je sedaj Jonita Ruth potrudila, da vodi kampanjo z rekordnim številom novih članic. Na dnevnem redu je bila razprava o pripravah za Heritage Day, ki bo letos dne 11. junija. Potrebovale bomo čimveč članic za pomoč pri delu za zopetni us,peh tega dneva. Prosi se tudi za darila za ta dan, in Mayme Fedo prinese krasni ročno izdelani afgan, dalje Marie Malnarich dva dobitka ter še druge. Za vse to se preds. že v naprej lepo zahvali. Ponovno smo prosile soproga Mayme Fedo, Franz Fedo, da bo zopet prevzel v roke mesna dela, pripravo sendvičev in drugo. Enako se prosi članice za pecivo. Dne 4. junija bomo imele sv. mašo, to je v soboto zvečer, za vse žive in umrle članice ob priliki 50 letnice ustanovitve naše podružnice. Da. Njegovo trplenje je bilo potrebno z dveh vidikov: kot zdravilo zoper greh in kot zgled za ravnanje. Kristusovo trpljenje, je bilo predvsem zdravilno. V njem je naše zdravilo zoiper vse zlo v katerem se znajdemo zaradi svojih grehov. Pravtako koristen je njegov zgled. V Kristosovem trpljenju je namreč moč za usmeritev vsega našega življenja. Kdor hoče popolno živeti, naj zaničuje, kar je zaničeval Kristus na križu, in želi kar je on želel. Križ je pot do vseh kreposti. Če iščeš ljubezni se spomni: “Nihče nima večje ljubezni, kakor je ta, da kdo za svoje prijatelje da svoje življenje. Tako je ravnal Kristus na križu, če je torej on dal svoje življenje za nas, ne sme biti tudi nam nobena žrtev zanj prevelika. Kdor išče zgled potrpežljivosti, bo odličnega našel na križu. Potrpežljivost je velika v dven primerih: če kdo prenaša velika na&protvanja, kadar se jim ne more izogniti, ali pa če se tem ne izogne, čeprav bi se jim mogel. Zgled obojne potrpežljivosti nam je dal Kristus na križu. Kajti ko je trnel ni pretil. V smrt so ga peljali kakor jagnje in ni odprl ust. Če iščeš zgled pokorščine, hodi za njim ki se je pokoril Očetu do smrti: Kakor je namreč po nepokorščini enega človeka (namreč Adama) množica postala grešna, tako bo tudi po pokorščini enega množica postala pravična. Če hočeš najti pravi odnos do zemeljskih stvari, hodi za njim, ki je kralj kraljev in Gospod gospodov, v katerem so skriti vsi zakladi modrosti in vednosti. Na križu je nag, zasmehovan, opljuvan, pretepen, s trnjem kronan, napojen s kison in žolčem. Ne navezuj torej svojega srca na oblačila in bogastvo, kajti razdelili so moja oblačila; ne na časti, ker je skusil sramotenje in udarce; ne na dostojanstva, kajti spletli sc krono iz trnja in mu jo dali na glavno, ne na ugodja, ker so m© v moji žeji napajali s kisom.. Butala je imel lep vspodbujevalni govor in je zaprisegel odbor za leto 1978, ki je ostal isti, kot lansko leto. Za razvedrilo sta zaplesale dve hčerke čla. Mrs. Kraus in sta žele lepo pohvalo. Naša St. Francis Academy prireja JUBILEJNI VEČER. To delo sta prevzela Olga in Edward Ancel, ki bosta imela na oskrbi posebno sobo pod imenom "SLOVENSKA GOSTIL NA”. Pričakuje se veliko odzivov, kakor tudi za ostale sobe, kjer se bo videlo razne plese in igre. Je zelo zanimivo in vabim k obilni udeležbi. Tudi "plaque” z napisi živih in umrlih bodo na tem imeniku, ki bo visel v veži naše šole. članice so vabljene, da prispevajo po sto dolarjev za družino. Posebno za umrle članice, je to izredno lep spomin trajne vrednosti, ker je njihovo ime vklesano na plošči. V nedeljo 28. bo blagoslov tega imenika v cerkvi ob pol-desetih nato bo prosti prigrizek v šoli za vse, ki so prispevali. Hvala vsem, ki ste sodelovali pri tem programu. Blagajničarka Mary Marolt pove, da je njena tašča Johanna Marolt, stara 88 let, sedaj že več tednov v bolnišnici. Drage sestre: leto 1977 smo lepo skupno končale in naše prošnje Vsemogočnemu so da nam nakloni zdravje in srečno v tem letu 1978. Najlepše služimo Bogu, če pomagamo eden drugemu. Posebno se spomnimo naših sester od podružnice št. 24, ki bolehajo bodisi na domu, ali v bolnišnici. V preteklem letu nam je smrt pobrala kar 14 dobrih članic. Za te umrle skrbi naša dobra Jennie Feme, ki preskrbi za mašino za pogrebnice in moli za pokojne ob krsti. Smrt nam pobira, toda je teško nadomestiti vrzeli * novimi članicami. Ni več tako kot je bilo v prvih letih. Težko mi je-da ne gremo naprej, nekatere se preselijo ven iz naselbine in se potem pridružijo podr., ki je v bližini. Drugače se pa kar dobro imamo na naših sejah, članice rade prihajajo in jih imamo vsaja od 20 do 3® članic navzočih. Smo kar zadovoljne’ Dragi Tilki v spomin #> Mrs. Matilda Podborsck 1893-1978 malo pokrivamo številke in po vsaki seji imamo prigrizek. To leto je naše posebno leto, ker bomo praznovale našo 50 letnico obstoja, dne 15. oktobra v naši dvorani pri Sv. Vidu. Pozneje bom malo opisala kako smo me lepo napredovale v preteklem času odkar smo praznovale 25 letnico. Imele smo nad enajst-sto članstva v odraslem oddelku pri podr. Več o tem drugič, sedaj samo sporočam, da bomo letos z veliko žlico praznovale 50 let. Vse članice lepo prosim da bi redno plačevale svoj mesečni assesment tajnici, da bo njeno delo lažje. Sneg je močno padal, prav medlo je in pihalo tudi, ko nas je John poklical v soboto, da je mama po enoletni nezavesti izdihnila. Ko jo je John lansko leto peljal v bolnišnico zaradi prehlada, nobeden ni mislil, da bo kmalu naito Tilko zadela kap in jo pustila brez zavesti še skoro celo leto. Ko pa smo zvedeli za žalostno novico, da je preminula v petek 13. januarja, nas je vseeno sporočilo globoko prizadelo. Tilko sem sipoznala pred leti, bila je na prvem sestanku, ko smo pričele organizirati leta 1965. Slovensko žensko zvezo v Washingtonu. Hitro sem jo vzljubila, čeprav je bila že takrat starejša gospa, pa je imela izreden čut dobrote, poštenosti in natančnosti. Koliko dobrih nasvetov se je strosilo iz nje, koliko fizičnega dela je vložila v našo zvezo pri različnih pripravah za slovenske prireditve v Washingtonu! Rada se je udeleževala slovenske mesečne božje službe v ka- peli Marije z Brezij, kakor tudi drug'h prireditev in ni bilo sestanka naše zveze, da se ga Tilka ne bi udeležila. Njeni predlogi in nasveti pri naši podružnici so bili vedno pametno predloženi in tudi upoštevani. Tilka je bila velika po duhu in globoka v svojih prepričanjih in mišljenju, prav zato je imela tudi med drugimi toliko mladih prijateljev. Pogreb je bil eden najlepših, katerih sem se udeležila. Kljub trpljenju in strahotni muki v zadnjih petih urah preden je izdihnila je bila na parah tako lepa in spokojna. Bog ji daj večni mir In pokoj. Naše globoko sožalje pa izrekamo sinu Johnu. John je za svojo ljubo mater vzorno skrbel do zadnje sekunde. S T.ilklnim slovesom je washing-tonska naselbina izgubila zavedno in izredno plemenito slovensko rojakinjo, ki pa je po dolgem trpljenju dobro zaslužila svoj počitek pri Bogu. NIKA B. KOVAČIČ F1. Pri naši podružnici ni nič kaj posebno novega. Seje so še lepo obiskane in kadar imajo rojstne dneve lepo postrežejo in prinesejo dobitke v korist naše blagajne. Žal moram pisati, da smo v zadnjem letu izgubile kar tri članice, to so: Mary Plečnik, Mary Pavlovčič Klinar, naša dolgoletna blagajničarka in Rosi Slabi. Naj bo jim Bog dober plačnik in naj jim sveti večna luč. Bile so dobre članice, zato jih bomo pogrešale. Rada bi nekoliko napisala svoje spomine pred štiridesetimi leti, čeprav nisem bila ustanovna članica, vendar sem bila že na drugi seji. Ko je bila prva seja, sem bila v bolnišnici. Leta 1939 sem se udeležila konvencije, ki je bila v Ohisholm, Minnesota. Takrat sem bila že pet let predsednica in od tistega časa sem vedno imela pri srcu napredek Slovenske ženske Zveze. Sedaj upam, da bodo tudi mlajše se trudile in lepo vodile naprej. Ob zaključku voščim vsem gl. uradnicam in članicam, posebno tudi našim članicam — zdravo in srečno leto 1978. Sklenile smo, da pripravimo na IG. aprila kosilo in zabavo. Ob dveh popoldne se prične servirati v SND v Maple Hgts., Ohio. Podrobnosti bodo pravočasno objavljene. Za materinski dan bo v maju proslava na kateri bomo počastile zaslužno mater za leto 1978. Izvoljena je ses, Jennie Segulin o kateri bodo pisane njene zasluge za podr. prihodnjič. Ostal je ves stari odbro, razen druge nadzornice. Po seji smo imele zabavo z dobrimi okrepčili za katere so preskrbele Anna Krešecic, Anna Harsh, Jennie Praznik, _ Mar# Mundson, Antonette Janders in Jennie Pugely. Za durne dobitke so prinesle: Jennie Gerk, Jennie Praznik in od heritage je ostalo nekaj dobitkov, kar je bilo lansko leto v SND v Maple Hts., O.
