Our regular columnists always provide worthwhile reading, at any age, in Slovenian and English.

Congratulations on the Great Achievement! Slovenian Chapel Blessing, August 15, 1971 At Washington, D. C.
The enormous responsibility of securing funds for the Slovenian Chapel in Washington rested on the generosity of the Slovenian organizations and good Slovenian people of the United States who did ultimately come through with sufficient funds for the construction of the Chapel as planned, a $70,000.00 monument to the Patroness of Slovenians, Marija Pomagaj. Collections from one thousand dollars to one single dollar were under the charge of the S. W. U. National President Antonia Turek and her devoted husband, Frank, the Secretary
THE CHAPEL OF MARIJA POMAGAJ

The Chapel of Our Lady of Brezje, MARIJA POMAGAJ, in the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception in Washington is located in the lower church Memorial Hall. The focal point of the chapel is the painting of the Madonna and Child, a reproduction of Leopold Layer’s baroque original at	the	Shrine	of
Brezje	in Slovenia. It is a gift from	the	bishops	of
Slovenia and was executed by Leon Koporc, professor of art at Ljubljana. The crowns adorning the Mother and Child are also exact reproductions of the originals and were executed by the master goldsmith Alojz Žmuc of Ljubljana. The painting is mounted in a golden	frame and	surrounded by a gloriole of rays
carved into a red marble wall.
The	main altar	is of light marble	and	along	its
edge runs the prayer in Slovenian “MARIJA POMAGAJ Z BREZIJ, PROSI ZA NAS!” It also bears

the Slovenian coat-of-arms, a horizontal crescent moon surrounded by three six-pointed stars in a triangle with SLOVENIA underneath it.
Four diagonal walls in the chapel contain relief panels portraying four prominent events in the 1200 years of Slovenians as Christians. They are original works by sculptor, France Gorše. Of prominence on the right and left side walls are two original quotations carved in gold letters taken from the writings of the two Slovenian candidates for sainthood, Bishops Frederic Baraga and Anton Martin Slomšek. Bishop Baraga’s, in English is:	This is all I desire, to be
where God wants me to be. Bishop Slomsek’s words in Slovenian read:	Sveta	vera bodi vam luč, materni
jezik bodi vam ključ do zveličanske narodne omike. (Let the holy faith be your light and your mother tongue the key to a national culture which will show you the way to salvation.)
The beauty and majesty of the Slovenian Chapel — on each of its walls, ceiling, altar and entrance will be seen by those who attend the Blessing ceremonies August 15th and for all the years to come as Slovenians visit Marija Pomagaj in her new home at the National Shrine in Washington.

POSVETITEV SLOVENSKE KAPELICE
Ta mesec je ZARJA posvečena slovenski kapelici. Urednica je želela naj o tem nekaj napišem.
Meseca aprila 1967 sem prejela pismo od dr. Cyrila A. Žebota, profesorja na Georgetown univerzi v Washing-tonu, v katerem me vabi naj prevzamem vodstvo nabirke za slovensko kapelico, češ, da voditelja nikakor ne more dobiti. Vodstvo je odklonila gotova organizacija, kakor tudi slovenska duhovščina. Pomoč obljubljajo vsi, vodstva pa ne prevzamejo. Tudi jaz sem obljubila pomoč, vodstvo pa odklonila iz razloga, ker bi za moja leta bilo to preveliko breme in pa, ker itak imam preveč dela pri naši Zvezi, katerega bom skušala na prihodnji Zvezini konvenciji odložiti. Pozneje sva o tem razpravljali s pokojno Zvezino gl. tajnico Albino Novak. Obe sva bili mnenja, da je ideja o kapelici sicer krasna zamisel, ki pa bo težko izvedljiva.
Na Zvezini konvenciji vršeči se meseca maja 1967 v Wasliingtonu je lokalna podružnica št. 102 predložila resolucijo, sprejeto na njih zborovanju meseca maja, naj bi Zveza prevzela vodstvo za uresničenje želj Slovencev v Washingtonu, da se v narodnem svetišču Matere Božje v Washingtonu postavi slovensko kapelico v spomin slovenskim pionirjem v Ameriki. V ta namen je potrebna vsota najmanj 50 tisoč dolarjev.
Resolucija je bila na priporočilo pokojne Zvezine tajnice Albine Novak, z večino sprejeta. Določeno je bilo naj Zveza sodeluje s slovenskimi organizacijami in društvi ter s slovensko duhovščino in farani, da se ta ideja uresniči. Dva meseca zatem je Zvezina glavna predsednica Antonia Turek, v Clevelandu, sklicala zborovanje ideji simpatičnih organizacij, društev in faranov. Na tem zborovanju je bil izvoljen narodni odbor. Izvršilni odbor je: Joseph J. Nemanich, predsednik, Frank A. Turek, tajnik, Antonia Turek, blagajničarka.
Ideja vpostavitve slovenske kapelice je takoj našla rodovitna tla. Urednica naše Zarje, Corinne Leskovar, je kapelici v listu posvetila obilo protora ter priobčila nebroj vspodbudnih besedi. Za doneske je apelirala tudi na čikaški slovenski tedenski radio uri.
Od vseh strani so pričeli prispevki prihajati, da je tajnik Frank Turek imel posla čez glavo preden je vse vknjižil. Ker sem “firbčna” sem ga vprašala za podatke. Prejel je 4705 prispekov; vse je pismeno potrdil. Za poročila v časopisih je napisal 4874 imen ter
o	nameravani kapelici razposlal 12 tisoč brošur. Ogro-mo delo, opravljeno z veseljem in veliko natančnostjo! Njegova soproga Antonia, blagajničarka sklada poroča, da je bilo za kapelico zbranega 72 tisoč dolarjev. K tej vsoti so Zvezine podružnice prispevale 3E tisoč dolarjev. Prostor ne dopušča navedbe vseh daril; omenila bom le najvišje vsote, zbrane od naših podružnic in po odbornicah blagajničarki poslane:
Albina Novak, Zvezina gl. tajnica, je zbrala ogromno vsoto, namreč $7,764.00.
Rev. A. J. Krusinski in Josephine Gostisha, pod. št. 7 v Forest City, Pa., sta zbrala $3,314.00.
Mary Otoničar, pod. št. 25 v Clevelandu, je zbrala $2,239.00.
Podružnica št. 2 v Chicagu je darovala $1,500.00.
Mary Hotujec, pod. št. 64 v Kansas City je zbrala $1,275.00.
Msgr. M. J. Butala, Joliet, 111., in pod. št. 20, $1,230.00.
Ella Starin in Dorothy Ferra, pod. št. 41, Cleveland, Ohio $1,221.00.
Slovenska Ženska Zveza, s sedežem v Chicagu, je darovala en tisoč dolarjev.

Blagajničarka ima namen pozneje objaviti vse podružnice, ki so darovale 100 dolarjev ali več.
Po zaslugi požrtovalnega vodstva in velikodušnih ameriških Slovencev je torej uresničena ideja, ki povezuje staro in novo domovnio,	da	bo kraljevala ameriškim
Slovencem. Lepšega spomenika si ne moremo misliti. Inciativa dr. Žebota je po razočaranju končno le našla v naših srcih topel odmev. Dr. Žebot sme biti ponosen!
Narodovo priznanje in zahvalo zaslužita g. Frank in ga. Antonia Turek, ki sta v tem pogledu opravila največ dela in pa odbor v Washingtonu, ki ima v oskrbi program posvetitve kapelice in je neumorno na delu vse od početka. Zvezine članice smo posebej dolžne zahvalo naši podružnici v Washingtonu, ki vsečasno sodeluje z tamošnjim odborom za posvetitev ter se pripravlja, da nas prijazno sprejme 12. augusta. Zahvalo smo dolžne predsednici podružnice Ireni Planinšek za pripravljen tridnevni program za udobno bivanje in o-gled mesta Washingtona in zgodovinskih krajev naše prestolice.
Irene se točasno nahaja na ženitovanjskem potovanju po Sloveniji in ostalih delih Evrope. Poročila se je 13. junija z g. K. M. Odorizzijem.

Staroslavna slovenska božja pot Marije Pomagaj na Brezjah bo s 15. augustom posebno počaščena z blagoslovitvijo Brezjanske Matere Božje v washingtonski katedrali.. Kakor se je verno slovensko ljudstvo skozi stoletja z zaupanjem obračelo k Mariji Pomagaj na Brezjah, tako bodo odslej tudi Ameriški Slovenci radi poromali k Mariji v prestolicl Amerike.

After many hundreds of days of work, worry; of talk and more talk, the dream-come-true Slovenian Chapel at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C., is a reality! On August 15, 1971, the Blessing of this Chapel will take place with thousands of Slovenian-Amerlcans and our Slovenian brothers from across the sea, will be present to witness the ceremony.
The Slovenian Chapel in itself will be a small but lovely place. What it stands for is much more impressive than its size.
Slovenians in America came here in the last half-century as non-entities, often mistaken for Austrians, Italians and now known as Yugoslavs. But, the Slovenian spirit of our old-timers withstood all the years of being unrecognized and on this occasion, will be able to stand counted!
The dream of the Slovenian Chapel has been more than the tribute to Marija Pomagaj, the Lady of Brezje, our Slovenian Patroness. It is that too, and no one can deny the power and inspiration which she has bestowed on us, especially the Slovenians who had to leave their homeland for far-away places all over the world. Marija Pomagaj brings us all together in thought and spirit and in common devotion to the Mother of God.
But, the Slovenian Chapel also stands as a monument to the tenacity and courage o f the Slovenians who came here and raised their families and made their new homes that America can be proud of. Tho little in number, the Slovenian nationality is far-spread out throughout the nation and shining in all the forms of endeavor. The first, second and third generation Slo-venian-Americans combined to bring their spirit and traditions to this nation while at the same time taking the opportunity to become worthy citizens and sons of liberty.
In the building of the Slovenian Chapel idea from a to reality, many persons had to work hard. And beyond the work was the conviction and determination that the fund drive would be successful and the Slovenian Chapel someday built as dreamed.

From this hard-working committee, we have lost two members in the past few months: Mrs. Novak and Mrs. Železnikar who were to their eternal rewards. But their work goes on and this month we celebrate the great achievement of the Dedication of the Slovenian Chapel in Washington, D. C.
The Slovenian Women’s Union believed in that dream. We believed in it from the earliest beginnings — the first step as it were — that came from the officers and delegates gathered at the National Convention in Washington in May, 1967. The proposal then was a little hard to believe — a little difficult to accept — for it involved $70,000.00, the goal! Then and there, those who would detract from it or negate its possibilities were given a strong and energetic word from the majority and the word was YES! “We will begin and we will work and it will be done!” The late Supreme Secretary Albina Novak, made her most eloquent plea for the Slovenian Chapel at the Convention and at the Grand Banquet at the Washington Hilton Hotel where many of our Washington dignitaries were present along with those who would take the word with them to their home towns. Mrs. Novak later spoke before the Chicago Committee which was one of the first organized and where originally the $100.00 Club was organized and again, no thought or word of defeat was spoken—ner determination and foresight came through in a way that made everyone present inspired and confident that the Slovenians in America would work together and make something of their own. Mrs. Novak has achieved her dream-of goal—and that is not to say it did not take a lot of work and courage. To her goes the honor of being the one who had collected the highest amount in the fund drive, over $8,000.00. And now that it’s all over, she will be watching and praying with us from her heavenly flome on August 15th when we all gather at the Slovenian Chapel Dedication.
The Slovenian Women’s Union, if it were not for its most energetic and hard-working National President, would not feel as much a part of this event as it does. But, with Mrs. Antonia Turek one of the National Dedication Committee members and the one who has devoted the past three and a half years to this action, we have a great stake in the Slovenian Chapel. Mrs. Turek, if all the hours were counted and work recorded, would

In the closing days of the Post-Convention Campaign, new member enrollments totaled 313 new members!
Congratulations to all workers and branches which increased their memberships! Full talley of this Campaign will be published in the September issue!

doubtless be the top worker of all! She and her husband, Frank, undertook the tedious and exact job of secretary and treasurer of the fund drive—which has been the main work of the committee. All else would be impossible if the collections were not successful and the money steadily coming in. At every occasion, Mrs. Turek has been in the forefront, speaking on behalf of the Chapel, collecting and acknowledging and seeing to it that all the people were informed. We read in Zarja each and every month of the progress of the drive through her President’s column and we were encouraged and thanked through her words. There is truly no one who can claim the honor that should go to Mrs. Turek for her excellent work, well done!
Thru all the years, reports in Zarja have shown us that our members and branches contributed heavily to the fund drive. We can easily claim to have collected half of the amount that was our total goal—and to each and every branch—the many members of the $100.00 Club, the individuals who gave, our sincere thank you!
So, the campaign is now over and a success! We salute all the many workers and donors who have all been necessary to bring the Slovenian Chapel to reality. Each and everyone who took part in the Chapel drive wanted to do so—and for this, it is a labor of love. Each dollar meant that someone was thinking of his Slovenian heritage, his homeland, his parents, his grandparents, or something that tied him or her to the Slovenian nationality. We are proud to be a part of this event and hope that for the years to come, Marija Pomagaj will continue to shower her love on us in America and on all our sisters and brothers across the sea.

Congratulations to the four branches who will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary in August and September.

Branch 50 is my Branch who is celebrating this year and one of which I am proud to be a member! Past three years we have increased with forty-four new members. The branch is very active and at each meeting we have a nice attendance. Luncheon is served each month with delicacies donated by volunteers. We are very honored to have three sisters who volunteer to have charge in getting the luncheon ready and they are Vicki Pianeclci, Ann Krištof and Mary Petrich.
September 26, 1971 the branch will celebrate the 40th Anniversary Banquet which will be held at Rehar Hall in Euclid, Ohio. Dinner will be liome-cooked by our talented cooks. A nice program will be had and the Happy Wanderers will furnish the music for dancing. Admission tickets are available from the officers and members.
Our sick members that are hospitalized receive a card with 30 dimes which is very much appreciated by the patient. I received a card of dimes when I was hospitalized so I bought a tropicana rose bush for my rose collection and named it “Branch 50.”. Thanks to Branch 50 for the get-well wishes and card of dimes and to all National Officers, Branches who had sent me cards
—	flowers and gifts.
Post	Convention Campaign is over.
At this time	I have no idea who the winner	is	for
the free trip plus expenses to the dedication in Washington, D. C. The winner shall be notified by Secretary Fanika	Humar,	and also will have the winner in	Zarja.

Dear Members and Wonderful Officers of Branch No. 2:
A very sincere “Thank You” for selecting me as The Mother of the Year for 1971.
The Holy Mass which was held at St. Stephen’s church and the singing of the Marian Hymns brought back many memories, also tears of joy remembering many of the things we have done together in the past. They were memories never-to-be-forgotten by many of us older members. The inspiration was overwhelming, more than words can describe.
I will always cherish this Mother’s Day for being honored to be the Mother-of-the-Year. I hope and pray that Branch No. 2 will always have a Holy Hour for the Mother of the Year for years to come.
The program and the homemade bakery at the party after the church services was very good. I hope in
the future that more members will attend the Mass and the get-together after. If every member attended our church would be full, and I know they would enjoy it as much as I did.

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. — Our branch will not have a meeting in July, but we meet again on the third Sunday in August. We hope to see a big turn-out then as we will have to make plans for the 45th Anniversary of the branch to be held together with the State Convention for Wisconsin on the first Sunday in October.

Dear members: This year, the annual Lemont Zveza Day takes place Sunday, July 18th. The committee is preparing a wonderful day for you and all friends and families. Holy Mass will be held at the Grotto at
11	a. m. preceded by the procession and laying of wreath at the grave of Rev. Alexander Urankar. The Mass will be in Slovenian with Slovenian singing by the people. At 2:30 p. m. afternoon Vespers will also be held at the Grotto. During the day a picnic at the beautiful St. Mary’s Hill!

No. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — The regular meeting was called to order by our president,' Olga Mesojedec and opening prayers were said. Our Mother o£ the Year, Mary Bozaich was the honored guest.
National Shrine discussion and a few ladies from our branch are considering the trip. The State Conven tion discussion also took place and Junior group discussion.
Our Mother of the Year was presented with a lovely necklace. Mrs. Anna Pachak, president for 23 years, was presented with a lovely pin.
Mary Pugel gave a short talk on her trip to Mexico. We had a very nice gathering of the Branch No. 3 members. The lovely lunch was served by hostesses: Prances Perles-nick, Sophia Reems, Rose Ursick, Jennie Kochevar, Margaret Kochevar, Frances Simonich and Olga Mesojedec. Three generations were represented at the gathering. They were Mary Mohorčič, grandmother; Sally Glavich, mother and Mary Jo Glavich, daughter.
Prizes went to our members and a lovely time was had by all.
On the sick list were as follows: Anna Stajduhar, Prances Gacnick, Mary Poder, Prances Chorak, Mary Brumjak, Angela Roitz, Mary Perse, Mary Petrick, Mary Golob, Mary Pa-pish and Mary Beth Klune. A speedy recovery is our wish to all.
Our deceased were Rudolph Mohorčič, husband of Jessie Kosak, Frank J. Jamnik, son in West Virginia of Pauline Jamnick, Anna Prijatel, a member of Br. 3, Josephine Simonich, a member of Br. 3, sister-in-law of our secretary, Frances Simonich. Our sympathy to all of their families.

No. 13, San Francisco, Calif. — The
retirement and Birthday Party for Rudy Troya, husband of Sophie was one of the happiest days for many of his guests in a long time. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joseph and Ann Nanut were the hosts. Rudy was so surprised that it was a thrill for all as it is so difficult to really surprise Rudy; he is at the Hall for every function and actually he is MR. SLOVENIAN HALL, so it was wonderful the secret was so well kept. Rudy was complimented by all the former Presidents of the Slovenian Hall for all the honors of FREE work he has given to the improvement of the Hall. Rudy and Joseph Nanut are quite a team they work together doing the painting and plumbing needed to honor Rudy is little for all the good he does. Course I feel proud as I was taken care of by my Butra (Rudy’s mother) and I feel as if this is MY family despite there is no blood relation between us, there is a love bond. Our dear Mary Klepec, mother of Sophie and Ann,
was able to attend and add pleasure to the wonderful party. Mary has been so ill but she was a shining flower and an inspiration to all of us, it is a lesson we should all learn, no complaints or bitterness, just a happy feeling to have her family a-round her and to see all her friends. Mary you are quite a gal! Rudy’s entire family was present and the pride he must feel in his lovely children and their mates is well deserved, Rudy is a wonderful Dad ... This happy time spent with friends and family is what life is all about. A money tree from the guests was presented to Rudy needless to say he was surprised and happy. All we can say is Hvala Lepa Rudy za vse!

Plans are in the making for the tour to attand the dedication of the Slovenian Chapel in the National Shrine of the Imaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., which will take place in August. Contact the President, Marion Marolt, or Secretary, Marie Floryan, for further details. All particulars have been written up in the Dawn editions.
We were all shocked to hear of the death of our past National Secretary Albina Novak who passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April G, 1971. Albina who was known to everyone and was liked by so many members and friends that she made during her reign as an officer, will be greatly missed. She was a leader among the Slovenes and especially with the S.W.U. organization. She worked hard for a better and bigger S.W.U. and her work did bring national recognition, she was active in every cause and especially if it meant promoting the cause of the Slovenians. I believe, that her last cause was to help get enough funds for the Slovenian Chapel in the National Shrine.. Her wish was that she would have been able to attend this big celebration, but our dear Lord felt that it was time to take her into His care, and we can be sure that she will be looking down at as and being happy that this last wish came true. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved daughters and family. May she rest in peace.
Our meetings are fairly well attended and also want to let you know that we have a youngster, Robin, (daughter of our president) who attends practically every meeting with her mother.
She enjoys coming to the meetings and tries in her small way to be a big help in any way she can. Here and there the grandaughters of our vice-president, Vickie Kastelic also attend when they are vi-
siting by grandma’s house. We welcome the children’s attendance at the meetings, for these will be the future leaders of the organization. Please remember that there will be no meetings during the months of June, July and August. We will resume again on the 3rd Sunday of September, 1971.
The card party was truly a very successful event, with the proceeds going to St. Mary’s Church. Wish to thank the members, and friends for their donations of cash, prizes, cakes and participating, without your help we would not have been able to do so. Once again, millions of thanks.
Our card party for our treasury will be held on Thursday, October 28, 1971 at 8:00 PM at St. Mary’s Hall with cake and coffee served. All donations and prizes will be g' eatly appreciated, either bring them to the September meeting or to the hall that evening.
During the past several months the following new members were initiated:	Julia Omahne, Lillian Lip-
ski, Jack Olles (grandson of Mrs. J Nimmer, auditor and great grandson of Mrs. J. Schlosar, our organizer of Br. #17), Rachel Nuteson (granddaughter of Mrs. Lucile Koz-leuchar). At the present Mrs. Koz-leuchar Is at home convalescing after a fall. If in the neighborhood, stop in and spend a few moments with her. We lost three members this year: Frances Marolt and her son William Marolt, who predeceased her by se-several hours, dying of a heart attack as the family was on the way to the hospital to see their mother. She was survived by her sons, Anthony (Marion), Fred (Mary), Edward (Hazel) and William’s wife (Martha).
Mary Selendich passed away after a lengthy illness. She Is survived by her daughter Sylvia Milbrandt. Theresa Kerhin was in a nursing home for many years, passed away after a lengthy illness. She Is survived by her sons and daughters. Our deepest sympathy is extended to all of the bereaved families. May eternal light shine upon them.

A Lovely Bride — Our Irene
On Sunday afternoon, June 13th, 1971, at St. John the Baptist church in Joliet, Illinois, the beautiful wedding of Miss Irene Planinšek and Mr. Kenneth M. Odorizzi took place amidst a garden of flowers, sailing friends and relatives. The double ring ceremony was officiated by Rev. Daniel Sedlar, O. P. M.
The bride was attired in a long gown of ivory English net and pearl encrusted re-embroidered Alencon lace with an empire waist, long Bishop sleeves and high neckline. She chose a long mantilla of illusion and matching lace and carried a bouquet of white roses and stephanotis.
Attending Irene and Ken on this day were the following: Maid of Honor, Matilda Ausich; Bridemaids, Sharon Allbert, Karen Planinšek, Tory Hofer and Ushers were William Birdsell, Alan Steigemeier and Rick Hofer. Best man was Edward Cachel and Ringbearers were Monty and Randy Allbert.
Irene and her mother, Mrs. Emma Planinšek, are our one and only combination Mother-Daughter Presidents. Mrs. Planinšek is the charter president of Br. 20 in Joliet and Irene is the chartar president of Br. 103 in Washington, D. C. She teaches school and resides in nearby Virginia. The groom, Ken, is an accountant with the Continental Telephone Co. of St. Louis. Mo.
We all know and love Irene for the many nice things she has done for our members in Washington and for visitors and delegates who visited there and will again in August for the Slovenian Chapel Dedication.

the Holy Priesthood. He was born in Joliet, graduated from St. Joseph’s school, confirmed here, baptized here, and made his first education here.
Prior to coming to Joliet as a pastor he was a pastor in Waukegan, 111. for •10 years. He is very much liked here and is also very progressive, a good sportsman, and active in all dealings with youth and his parishioners.
In his honor a High Mass was offered each of the two days of his celebration, on May 22 and 2)3, with the Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet present on Saturday and with Bishop Blanchette of Joliet attending on Sunday. After Mass a banquet at the parish hall was held and on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Park.
Each time the parishioners from the vicinity and out-of-town visitors came in large numbers. The school band and the church choir participated. During the Mass the choir sang under the direction of Anthony Rozman, and they deserve the up-most praise and recognition as we all realize that it is the best choir in Joliet.
The presence of many of the clergy, monsignors and other priests, nuns, and friends elevated the entire celebration as one lives to see a golden anniversary of a priest once in a life time. May you live may more years,

times; few months ago she reported on our bowling tournament of 25 years ago, naming the captains, etc. Last week we read an article published May 25, 1946, as follows: “Mrs. Mary Terlep of Joliet will reign queen of the seventh tri-annual Convention of the Slovenian Women’s Union of America next week In the Indianapolis, Ind. Treasurer of the Joliet branch Mrs. Terlep recruited the most new members in a recent membership
campaign conducted by the fraternal organization.”
At this meeting held in honor of our Mothers in May our Mother of the Year, Frances Hubert, was specially honored. The president, Mrs. Emma Planinšek presented her with a huge corsage of red carnations and then she was seated beside her during the meeting. Presents from the officers and other members were presented to her. She was surprised with all this attention and thanked the members.
Frances Hubert, our auditor for a number of years, is a state supervisor in the Department for Correction of Boys. In her honor her relatives became new members of our branch: Loretta Parasci, her niece, also Dorothy Koncar, Marylin Goss, and Mary Mavec. A program was held to honor the Mothers, and a Slovenian dance with our Juniors in Slovenian National costumes danced the various folk dances. Those taking part were: Elaine Koncar, Andrea Barbich, Marla Lustik, Rosanne Ruth and Marie Olga Ancel. The accordian was played by son of our member, Bill Koncar. Our member Loretta Parasci gave a palm reading for the members, which was enjoyed by all.
Mrs. Helen Strojin donated a beautiful hand-crocheted scarf which was won by Olga Ancel. A cake given by Mary Mihelich was won by Josephine Muster; other winners were: Mayme Fedo, Mayme Atland, and Catherine Kness who won pillow cases. The members also gave a donation to

Mrs. Mary Schmidberger celebrated her birthday on the day of the meeting and a gift was presented her with the community singing “Happy Birthday.
Special recognition was given to the Mayme Spelich family, including Mayme, her daughter May Kay De-mich and small daughter, Mary Lee Demich. It is noted that their grandmother Mary Vlasich was also our member; she passed away 5 years ago.
Also lunch was served with delicious bakery donated by Mary Kay Demich, Mary Spelich, Emma Nosse, Olga Ancel, Emma Planinšek and Mary Mihelich. Community singing concluded the meeting.
Congratulations also to our Ven. Sister Mary Perpetus, who celebrated her 90th birthday, and is now at the home of “Lady of the Angels” and who has been a teacher at St. Joseph’s school for many years. She attended the celebration in honor of our newly ordained priest the Rev. George Klepec and our Monsignor M. J. Butala announced to the gathering crowd the 90th birthday. A group of parishioners came to personally express their good wishes to Sister Mary Perpetua, as many of the parishioners of our time were in her class. May Sister M. Perpetua live many more years among us and attend the various activities of our parish.
Our condolences to the following members; Pat Ashway lost her mother and also survived by sister Molly Molek; to Anna Papesh, who lost her husband Michael, (Anna is our long time bowler); Mr. Papesh is also survived by son Michael Jr., who is a local undertaker and her daugh-ter-in-law, Mary Jean. To Alma Munich who lost her brother Stephen Kavoris; to the Dragovan family on the loss of John Dragovan, their father, husband and brother; to Mary Mihelich who lost her father, Vincent Neiznanski.
Our congratulations to the lucky bowlers, wno held thier tournament in Joliet on March 27-28 at Raynor Bowl. It was a nice event to meet so many friends at this time. The West Allis team headed by Marie Floryan, presented us all with fresh flowers. The West Allis team was also headed by Josephine Scholssar who was welcomed in our midst.
Also present were Corinne Leskovar, Editor of Zarja, our National Secretary Fanika Humar, and her husband, also Sports Director, Liz Zefran. It was a friendly gathering ■—and we all enjoyed this luxurious bowling alley. The kitchen was in charge of our President Mrs. Planinšek and Vice President Josephine Muster.

It was a full house — entertainment was spontaneous and enjoyable. Marie Pivik took the task upon herself. We are proud of her and her singing groups gratefully.
The meal was a real treat; so delicious everyone remarked about the fare and the variety what with fresh hot service.
It was especially nice to have men as guests, how welcome.
We thank all purchasers of drawings and distributors donors of gifts and those ladies who cooperated in all categories of arrangements and sales.

No. 23, Ely, Minn. We have had a very busy year this year and thought I’d better send at least a semi annual report of our doings. Would have sent a report more often but after working and commuting to 50 miles each way, you don’t feel like it.
We have had very fine turn outs at our meetings since the beginning of the year. This was due to the programs or entertainment we nad at our meetings*. It isn’t fun coming to a meeting just to pay dues etc.
We have had very fine cooperation with the members; whenever you call on one to do something she very seldom says no, and this makes it

Lord, show us what this “notof-this-world” Peace is all about. Help us to become peacemakers. Will we have to die first?
THURSDAY: PRAISE OP PROGRESS. Yes, Lord, it is a great age to be alive. We have reached deep into the heart of our earth and solved many of her problems. We are thrusting our creativity right into the mysteries of outer space. The world, the wide world you loved enough to die for, is moving ahead, with wonder, sensitivity, beauty and power. Thank you, for making man such a marvel. Teach us to put our power and skill at the service of men everywhere.
FRIDAY: MOTHER'S EVENING PRAYER. It’s Friday
night, Lord Time for the family to be together. Thank you for week-ends; security and relaxation. Help me, to be mother and wife as they need me. Let it be fun. Help those families around the world wracked with sickness, homelessness, hunger. Let loving here this weekend make me brave enough to truly risk caring for nameless others.
SATURDAY. HEALING PRAYER. When you came to live among us, Lord, you came as a healer of men. Whatever was sick in us, whatever was less then whole, you touched. Your touch cured. Many have rubbed shoulders with me this week. Some were dying inside from loneliness or a sorrow words can never say out.
I want to touch them with friendship; to heal. Some in distant lands are dying needlessly, without medical care. I want to be a healer for them too. Show me how.
SUNDAY. GRACE BEFORE MEALS. Lord God, we thank you, for the Sunday dinner we had together, for the bread and the love we share. Grant that we may use the strength we gain here to be more present to the needs of those who come to us for help. A more effective leaven in our daily world. Mindful of those who die in hunger, let us never waste what You have so generously provided for us.
happy to work together. We have about 10 new members who joined recently and sometimes this fall we will have initiation for them. These new members are really good workers and haven’t learned to say no either and I hope they continue to be as they have in the past.
On Mother’s Day meeting we had our annual dniner and program. To begin we all went to the 6 p. m. Mass and after had a dinner in the church hall with a large attendance.
Rev. John Dolsina, our spiritual advisor and Rev. Dennis Hoffman were our honored guests. A delicious beef dinner with all the trimmings was served.
The tables were beautifully decorated with candy cups and yellow jonquils and pussywillows by Theresa Koschak who was in charge Gertrude Mosnik, Angela Kosir, Millie Gornick and Frances Grahek were in charge of the reservations and arrangements.
Door prizes were won by Mary Lahti, Victoria Skala, Frances Hansen, Angela Kosir and Ann Lunka.
The members who are shut-ins, we did not forget them for Mother’s Day. We sent them each a card together with $2.00. Our sick patients who are in the hospital and our members are given a card and hanky which really perks them up.
Our deepest sympathies to the Železnikar and Novak families on their great losses. We had Mass said for Josephine and Albina before our meetings so our members could attend. I know I will miss them especially not seeing them at our Conventions and Zzeza Day celebrations. This is a great loss to the Slovenian Women’s Union. We will remember them in our prayers.
We also offer sympathies to the Gorshe, Sheryak and Gobolicli families upon the loss of their mothers.

No. 23, Ely, Minn., Dawn Club. —
The Annual Spring Banquet of the Ely Dawn Club was held Wednesday, May 19th, in the Cork and Cleaver Room of the Legion Building with 56 members in attendance. Steak or chicken were the main dinner course.
Mary Gotchnik was in charge of the program which included tenor solos of Slovenian numbers by Franklin Levar, Ely Junior high school student, accompanied by Mrs. Gotchnik on the accordian, and a “sing-along” of popular Slovene and American classics.
Games were played with 23 ladies winning prizes. The door prize a-ward went to Pat Tarvin. The banquet concludes summer activities of the Ely Club which will be resumed in September. Hostesses named for the September meeting are, Margie Preshiren, Rose Stupnik, Rose Novak and Ann Levar.
Have a good summer everybody and enjoy your vacation. We will be with you again in the fall.

No. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — It was a
beautiful day here in Pittsburgh on May ISth so that helped to make our luncheon and card party a big success. The committee and I want to thank all the members and friends who came to the luncheon and a special thanks to the members who brought prizes.
Catherine Jaketic sent us lovely pillows from Cleveland. Catherine, it was very thoughtful of you; thank you very much.
So far this year, death took 7 of our members. Belated sympathies to the following families: Lokar family on the loss of their sister, Justine Lokar; the Kunlc family on the loss of their mother, Katherine Kunic and the Krotec family on the loss of their mother, Dorothy Krotec. Last night we said a Rosary at the Frank Per-man's chapel for the soul of Anna
Katusin; our deep sympathy to the Katusin family.
There will be no meetings during July and August. Our next meeting will be on September 21st.

No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. Our president thanked the members for such a nice attendance, each one had a carnation pinned on by Mrs. Turk. This being the Mother’s Day meeting, the opening prayer was for all the members and we also prayed for Albina Novak, our devoted leader and mother who went to her rest with her work on this life done. May she rest in peace; our sympathy to Corinne and family. Another note of sympathy to Mary Ercul, her husband, Vincent passed away April 14th. May he rest in peace.
May 8th, Margaret Telcavec, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Tekavec, became the bride of Eugene Reilly of Euclid, O.
Our sick that have been mentioned some months ago — we pray that they all are much better by now. We should visit them. Mary Bratkovich is now in a nursing home. She was the one who b:oke her hip in a fall.
Tony Bostian, husband of our president, had an operation on May 25th. He was very sick. I really felt sorry for our president, as the bake sale started May 2Gth and she could not call it off, so between running to the hospital and back to Rehar Hall, she had more than her share. We were all worried about her. Those of us who helped in the kitchen shared our help and time with her — that’s what we’re here for, after all. The bake sale Sas a success — more on that at the meeting.
Mary Drobnick had her sister from Florida visiting het; she is always busy with company. Mary read the names and donations for our Mother’s Day lunch. Please excuse me
for not naming them here — it would take too much space. The food looked so pretty — the way Mary had it arranged,
Our president praised her for doing such a good job — Mary is always working. Also, 15 members celebrated birthdays; we thank them for making the kitty richer. Our president called on Margaret Turk; she was in charge of the program and Mother of the Year treat. Margaret pinned a corsage on Frances Klune, Mother of the Year and gave her a gift. She read a note of thanks for all she did for our branch and for cooking such good food at the Convention last year. We are sure the delegates will remember the good food and hospitality. We are very happy to have Frances Klune as Mother of the Year.
From the News-Herald, the photographer took pictures and they were published later. As a treat for all, Margaret Turk’s daughter and friend performed karate, showing different ways how to protect yourself when attacked— it was very interesting. Thanks to Mrs. Turk.

No. 33, Duluth, Minn. Branch No, 33 held its annual Mother of the Year dinner on May 5th. We began the evening with Mass honoring the living and deceased members of Br. 23. “Gramma Zilko" was presented with a corsage and gift and was introduced at the meeting to members and guests present. The meeting itself was brief but so many things were taken care of.
The entertainment for the evening was wonderful and consisted of a group of girls from St. Scholastica’s called the Madrigal Singers, a young Tamborltza group from the Serbian Orthodox church, which I might add were very accomplished considering their age, and last but not least was a very talented young girl who gave a reading on "Noah’s Ark”, that had everyone young and old laughing heartily. The officers and members of Br. 32, Euclid, Ohio want to congratulate Mrs. Josephine Stwan on her 1971 A-ward as Slovene Woman of the Year by the Federation of Slovenian National Homes of Cleveland. The SND on St. Clair Ave., the largest in the city and I’m sure the entire country, is her sponsor. I am proud and all members of Br. 32 are proud to have her in our branch. We all wish her the very best of luck. There are 9 Slovenian Homes in Cleveland and the Awards Banquet took place on March 21st on St. Clair Ave.
At our meeting in May, we celebrated Mother’s Day and honored our Mother of the Year, Frances Klun who was selected by our members. Frances was presented a corsage and a beautiful gift. She was very surprised and in her humility said she didn’t expect to have such honor.

Our Dawn Choral Group seems to thrive on being busy on one project after another. Our April 1971 Card Party was an enormous success. Thanks for the help from our chair-lady, Pauline Krall.
Most every time something comes up tragically that pulls us up sharply. Our deepest condolences and sympathy to our financial secretary of the Dawn Club Group, Mrs. Frances Globokar, on the unexpected death of her spouse. May he rest in peace and may God give Frances the strength to carry on.
The summer months are here and vacations are in order. To our dear friend and leader, Mary Bostian’s husband, Tony, who is recovering from surgery, we wish him well and soon.
Saturday, June 5th, we had a Memorial Mass for recently deceased Albina Novak. Represented were members of Branch No. 50, by Toni Turek., Br. 32, Mary Bostian and Josephine Comenshek and Br. 14. Vera Bajec, Mary Iskra, Frances Kog Antonia Suster and yours truly. There were others, I'm sure that I failed to see. It was a nice gesture. That’s the way, girls, show your fraternal spirit!
I myself am getting ready for a sojourn to Europe and am I excited!
I hope to jet back safely.
All my best to the travellers wherever they may be going. Will have more to tell on my trip when I get back. I plan to keep a dally journal because I am apt to forget— you know—old age! Ha! Ha!

chalrlady Marilyn Freck did a great job. The ladies watched Margaret’s daughter Joyce and her girl-friend Sue Sgllo, demonstrate karate which was something to see. Thanks for such a different and interestinng program, Margaret. Our hostesses handled the luncheon with excellence — that was Mary Drobnick and her helpers. I am grateful to you all and to those who cooperated. We were espiecially happy at the turnout. I hope many more members decide to visit our meetings—don’t stay away.
In July w-e plan a picnic, hope many of you will come.

Indeed, we had a great success at the April 22rd Card Party. It was a joy for the group as it will be a big help as expenses have been great in the past year. I thank our chalrlady, Pauline Krall; she Is a superb chalrlady! I must say, we are lucky to have her. I admire her and am very grateful. We have many o-thers In our group who can do many things—with your cooperation there are still many wonderful things to do. Let’s keep this harmony in whatever we undertake to do and have a happy family—all sisters! May God bless you all!
Our scribe Rose Mikovic was a busy gal at the game. She was celebrating her wedding anniversary with a big corsage that her husband presented to her and she wore it proudly. Rose we all wish you many good wishes'.
Our National President, Antonia Turek, spent some time in the hospital and we all hope she will be fit as a fiddle again soon.
The Choral Group will have their Fall Concert Nov. 28th. They ask you to keep this date open for our concert.

A Loyal Friend and Co-Worker is Gone!
God called him suddenly and he was ready. We lost Louis Muze-lak on May 29th, 1971, on a bright Saturday after he had spent the morning working to put up the pages of Zarja at the Benedictine Press, his employer for 46 years and co-worker on Zarja for 30 years. Louis was called without warning, but with the blessing of the last sacraments and without pain.
We never thought of the Benedictine Press and the work there without thinking of “Louie”. He was always very Involved in his job, and especially with Zarja which he loved very much. His affection for Zarja came, I believe because in these pages, he was able to put	his creative ar-
tistry to work. He was constantly trying to make the pages look better and we often worked closely to plan them. And, the covers:	Louis	was
forever looking for new borders, trimmings and special type that would set off my ideas for the cover page each month. All the hours he spent on Zarja are uncountable!
He will	be	gratefully and	fondly remembered by	us and we add
our prayers	to	those	of	his	many friends, that God	will grant him

Our condolences go out to the family and many friends of Mrs. Sophia Tomich who was called suddenly and quite unexpectedly to her eternal reward. It has saddened many of us who knew her in any way.

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. Our final meeting before the summer recess was held on Wednesday evening May 19th and in spite of the unusual weather we had 23 members present. By unusual, I mean a snowstorm which started in the morning and kept on snowing all day and night so that it completely covered everything so we were back to winter driving conditions. However, it was short-lived and today, 2 days later, everything is green again and Spring is in the air. Actually, the snowstorm did much good as it completely put out the terrible forest fire in the Superior National Forest, a-bout 30 miles north of Ely which did a million dollars worth of damage to trees, wildlife and soil conservation, and destroyed over 13,000 acres of timber. More than 600 men fought the blaze all weekend and it was brought under control with the help of the snow and rain, which fell on Monday.
Mrs. John Pahula presided at the meeting, and following the business session, the members were reminded to keep MINNESOTA DAY in mind which falls on the 2nd Sunday of September—Keewatin Branch being the “hosts” this year. As soon as particulars about the Day are forthcoming, members will be notified by Mrs. Pahula.
A social hour followed and prize winners at cards and Scribage were: Mrs. Mary Pahula, and Mmes. Nick Tekautz, Frederick Myre and Leo Wilson.
Mrs. Louise Chiabotti and Mrs. Ramon Berg were hostesses and served a tasty luncheon to conclude the evening’s cordial mood. Mrs. Berg was awarded the door prize, donated by Mrs. Edward Dragovan.
To all SWU members throughout the land, we wish a relaxing and healthy summer vacation—and to those who will be fortunate enough to go to the Slovenian Chapel dedication in Washington, D. C.—have a Happy time—and remember the “stay-at-homes” in your prayers to MARIJA POMAGAJ.

No. 35, Aurora, Minn. The Slovenian Women’s Union recently had a meeting to elect new officers for the year and the following were e-lected: Mmes, Anna Hren, President; Marion Potočnik, Vice-President; Frances Bradach, Sec.Treas.; Katherine Hanka, Rec. Sec.; Mary Smo-lich, Sergeant-at-arms; Frances Smo-lich and Anna Hren, Auditors.
Meeting date will be the 4th Wednesday of each month.
The May meeting was held at the home of Margaret Laurich of Ely Lake. The Candy Sale was reported by Treas., Frances Bradach as a fine success with a good sum added to our treasury.
On Thursday, June 25th, the members had a Slavic Bake Sale at the Orazem and Smolicli store. We hope to report a very fine sale and what else could it be with our members all such excellent cooks and bakers?
Our women planned on having their July meeting in the form of a pot luck picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Laurich at Ely Lake. Mr. Laurich will be on hand to take the women boating.
The members of our branch donated the book “From Slovenia to America” to the Aurora Public Library.
After the meeting, Mrs. Margaret Laurich served a most delicious lunch. Thank you, Margaret.

meeting was very well-attended; 4 new members were initiated. We hope you new members will enjoy our getting together and meetings. Bar-beque sandwiches, cake and coffee were served after the meeting.
A dinner with a speaker was discussed. The date has not been decided, but it will be in the next issue of Zarja. A Card Party is scheduled for the fall and more on this event in next month’s Zarja also.
No meeting in July or August, but on September 2nd, Thursday at 7 p. m. at the Lily Club.

Some of our members spent the Memorial week-end up north, among them the Moharko Families who have a cottage there. Ceil Gratli went to Indiana with her nephew and his wife to visit a sister and niece.
Marge Zefran and her daughter Patricia spent two weeks in Florida. I did not get to see them but I am sure they enjoyed themselves.
Our faithful and dependable member Christine Rebemisek met. with an
accident during our bowling tournament. Christine fell backwards on the alleys and somehow had her left hand under her, and later during the week found out she broke a bone in her wrist. Her arm was in a cast, but recently removed and only a small cast was put on her wrist. “Tina”, we all wish you a very fast recovery.
Just received word that Mary Kresse’s husband John passed a-way. Mary has been a long-time member and very devoted. Her husband has been ill for several years at home and in the hospital. Our sincere sympathy to the Kresse family, and may his soul rest in peace.
The year is half way gone, and those of you who have not paid their dues, please do so at your earliest convenience.
I have had several members call me for cook books, and I do have your names and the amount of books you want, and as soon as they are available, I will contact you.
I also have the history book: “Prom Slovenia to America”; anyone who wishes or needs one call me at 481-7257 after C p. m.

No. 45, Portland, Ore. We held our last meeting until the second Tuesday of Sept. Attendance was 9 members. Please, dear members, let us try to attend more meetings this fall! We never have more than 7 or 8 members at the meetings — this means it Is always the same ones that come all the time. If transportation is your problem, then call us and we will try to arrange it. Someone can always take you home if you can get there. So, I am hoping to see more of you at the meetings this fall.
We would like to make plans as to how we could make some money for the treasury and we would welcome your suggestions.
At the May meeting last night, we decided to make a tour of West Hills and Hollywood Mortuary last June.
We received a thank you message from the family of Albina Novak for the Mass we had said here for her.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio. Even the rainstorm did not keep our lovely ladies from attending our May meeting. So very nice to see so many in attendance to pay tribute to our Mother of the Year, Ann Kristoff. Corsages made by Mary Perusek were presented to Ann and our last year’s Mother of the Year Beatrice Tome. A beautiful poem written by Carol Traven was read and a gift was presented. Another poem was read written for Ann by our member Ivanka Matic. We have real talent in our group! To Ann, on behalf of all our members we wish her a lifetime of good health and happiness!
So nice to see Toni Turek back with us after a stay at the hospital.
Josephine Simenc, Sophie Zagorc and Jean Pike also had recent hospital stays. We wish them each a speedy recovery and hope the good Lord keeps them well.
Another new member for our No. 50! Lillian Perez was welcomed into our group. So nice to see Carolyn Budan, Jean Zagar, Josephine Arko and Josephine Minello with us again.
Our sympathies to Mary Susnilc on the recent loss of her brother. May the perpetual light shine upon him!

No. 52, Kitzville, Minn. 24 members were present for the June meeting at the Little Grove. This year we have a great undertaking — as hostesses of the State Convention to be held at the Moose Hall on September 12th. In view of those circumstances we are going to iron out some of the odds and ends that are left to get in full swing for the big day. We will be counting on all our members to be present for we will need ALL THE HELPING HANDS WE CAN GET!

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Karl Oswald on their 48th Wedding Anniversary. May God the Father bless you on your day as you remember all the joys that life has brought your way. May He make every day a happy one for you. Sister Josephine Oswald as our president for 33 years! She is still as active as ever. We hope and pray that her husband Karl and she will have many more years of married bliss and that life will be good to them both. Congratulations, again!
Our president then lead us in prayer and concluding our business portion we continued with the social aspects of the evening. Hostesses were sisters: Veronica Krismonieh, Margaret Pogorelz, Patricia Mancuso, and Annie Nelmark. A delicious lunch was served. Games were played with honors awarded to Josephine Oswald, Ann Mansfield, Josette Maki, Gertrude Kochevar, Rose Trombly, Dorothy Rose, Celia Politano and Mildred Barbatto. Door prizes went to Ann Nelmark. We had a delightful time.

No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. Our last meeting before the summer vacation was held on May 11th when we honored our Mother of the Year, Barbara Doshen. We had a large turnout which was really nice to see. We presented the honored Mother with a corsage and a gift and while a verse for “Grandma” was read, by her great-granddaughter, Kristen Dreshar presented her with a bouquet of white roses. Singing of Slovenian and English songs took place and Mr. Anthony Babich graciously serenaded us with his concertina.
Lunch was served froi tables cov-vered with white lace an a centerpiece of pink roses and a Madonna flanked by pink candles. Edith Dresher, granddaughter of our Mother, presided at the coffee service.
Cards ware played and prize winners were Mmes. Amelia Domen, Mary Drobnick, Mary Ayotte, Margaret Skorich, Rose Ozanich, Rose Vukich and special prize winner was Mary Puhek.
A speedy recovery to all the sick and best wishes to you for an enjoyable summer. We will not have a-ny meetings during July and August and you will be notified about Minnesota Day In September. or hadn’t been at the previous meeting, and she used the "kitty” to purchase supplies and ingredients and turned out the most delicious homemade bread and her famous homemade noodles. You can be sure that having tasted these two items previously, the winners were exceptionally pleased with their prizes. Yours truly was lucky enough to win a loaf of Josephine’s home-made bread, and my son Randy evidently thought it should last forever as he wanted to know “where is that good bread” when we sat down to a meal, forgetting that we had finished the loaf himself. With as many loaves of bread and as many packages of noodles she brought out, I feel sure that Josephine must have used some of her own personal food supplies than just what the amount of the “kitty” covered, plus donating several food items as prizes also. Thank you again Josephine for all the work and time involved as all the members appreciated same.
Congratulations are in order to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Shaab (Patsy Mauer) upon the arrival of “Christine Marie” born May 5,1971. Baby “Christine Marie” has already been signed as a Junior Member.
Quite a few of our members attended a card party given by the Women’s Guild from Holy Trinity Church in Bedford Heights, Ohio, a suburb directly south of Warrens-ville Heights, as our Recording Secretary Gloria Dusek is not only a member of the church but was e-lected President of the Women’s Guild for this coming year. It was a lovely party, loads of door and other prizes, but one of their yearly rituals is to select a “King” and “Queen” by drawing names from a box, and these two people not only get lovely crowns which they wear for the rest of the evening, but also are recipients of numerous gifts. We are happy to write at this time that the “King selected was Mr. Peter Yuratovac our President Kay’s husband. Gloria placed the crown on Mr. Yuratovac’s head and also gave him a great big kiss—as after all the “king is her “uncle”. A nicer person as Mr. Yuratovac couldn't be chosen, and we all offer our congratulations, What we want to know Kay —does he wear it when he wants to stress a point around the house? Only teasing “King” Yuratovac.
I suppose our next meeting will find the members tired from house-cleaner, and wearing a sun-tan from outside gardening—so take it easy ladies tomorrow is another day.

On November 14, 1950, I was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. Strasky. I graduated from Brush High School in 1969 and now attend General Motors Institute of Technology as a sophomore majoring in Industrial Admlnstration.
Since GMI is a co-op school, I alternate attending school in Flint, Michigan for 6 weeks and working at Fisher Body in Cleveland for 6 weeks through out hte year. At GMI, I am on the newspaper and yearbook staffs, Special Publications Editor, Secretary Treasurer of General Motors Independent Association, a member of the Aquaneers and make the Dean’s List for two semesters.
Singing and playing the guitar are my favorite pastimes but others include sewing, swimming, bycycle riding and bowling.
MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY DEBUTANTE KATHERINE SPELLACY
My name is Katherine Marie Spell-acy. My birthday is May 5th. I was born in East Cleveland, Ohio. There are 5 children in the family. The ages are 27, 18, 17, 13 and 6. My oldest	sister is	27 years old.	Her
name is Sister Mary Theresine. My brother George is 17, my brother Joe is 19,	and	the	baby Therese	is 6.
My mother’s name is Elsie and my father’s name is George.
The schools I attended were: Moses Cleveland	for	Kindergarden,	St.
Maiy’s	of	Czestowocha from	first
grade through 8th grade. I attended St. Stanislaus High School for 9, 10, 11 grades. Then after my Junior year, St. Stan’s combined with three other area high schools to form the first multicampus high school called Cleveland Central Catholic High, under the direction of Rev. John L. Fiala.
The three other are high schools were Lourdes Central Catholic, St. John Cantius, and St. Michael’s high school. In the beginning it was tough for us to get used to the idea but in my own estimation everything worked out for the best of the schools themselves.
My Senior year was the most enjoyable of them all. I like to get to know people and be friends. I always did. With the combining of the four high schools, I got to meet many new friends. The Seniors especially were great. I think the first graduation class of Cleveland Central Catholic helped the teachers keep the school together.
The underclassmen helped also by keeping the rules the Administration and Faculty enforced on us. If they wouldn't have enforced those rules, there would have been nothing left for the year “71”.
The music nowadays is really loud. I like the music of the “now” generation. It really has something to say. If people would understand and selves. No one can really show us listen to the music instead of critiz-ing the younger generation it would be a lot better for everyone.
The music is different because this is the only way we can express our how to do things. We have to do them for ourselves. That’s our nature. When our parents were our age, they were experimenting, too, so really it’s nothing new for us to experiment.
I enjoy all sports. My favorites are swimming, baseball, and football. During the summer I do a lot of swimming and playing softball and baseball. During the football season I like to watch a real good football game.
Right now I haven’t done any traveling but my one ambition is to visit Europe.
Tn high school I was a member of a few clubs; they were Choral, Jr., Ited Cross, Mission Club, and Junior Achievement. Being in Junior A-chievement was the best experience I ever had. I learned a lot about
how to run a business. I was the Assistant Treasurer. My duties were to take care of the Payroll and Payroll checks.
I love to cook but I don’t do very much sewing.
In my last year of high school I received the greatest honor a girl could ever receive. I was one of the first Slovenian Debutantes. The Cotillion Ball was the first in the history of the Slovenian Women’s Union and I was very proud to be a part of it. The Ball was held on May, 23, 1970.
The girls were presented with their Fathers. After all the girls were presented their escorts were then presented. My escort’s name was Robert Michael Stewart. All the girl’s were in white evening gowns. The Fathers and escorts were in formal attire. Before the escorts were presented the girls waltzed with their fathers.
That evening there were 12 girls presented to the public. There were approximately 350 guests. The girls carried a bouquet of red carnations with a red, white, and blue ribbon.
I think in my own estimation our First Debutante Cotillion Ball was a great success. I hope the future Cotillion Balls will also be as great!

The regular meeting of our branch was held at the home of Mrs. Mary Kolar. Assisting was Mrs. Mary Marolt.
A warm welcome to our new member, Mrs. Mary Zevnik.
A Mother’s Day breakfast was held at Fr. Frederick Hall for all members following the 8:00 AM mass.
The next meeting was held on June 23 at the home of Mrs. Tony Schweiger.
The business meeting concluded with a prayer. The attendance prize was won by Mrs. Ann Preshiren.
A very delicious lunch was served by the hostesses.

No. 85, Depue, III. A lovely time was had by the 6 members who attended the last meeting until October, playing games and having cake, ice cream and coffee as refreshments. Happy Birthday was sung for my benefit as I will be celebrating my “39” again in another week.
Things are looking grim here in DePue. The New Jersey Zinco Co. will be closing down for good this summer, throwing about 400 people out of work. We will soon become a “ghost” town!
To all who are celebrating birthdays during the summer months, a happy day! To those who are ill — may you soon regain your health. A happy and safe vacation to all!

No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. We had
our last meeting of the season on Tuesday evening May 25th. featuring a pot luck supper at G:30 p. m. There were 15 members in attendance which was very gratifying. There were also 17 guests with us. We held a short business meeting prior to the supper. Members were reminded of the annual Minnesota Day and State Convention hosted by Br, 52 in Kitzville this year. Anyone wishing to attend may contact our president, Mary Zakrajšek.
Following the supper, many of the members helped with the cleanup aftei which we played cards with 8 tables in play. First, second and low prizes were awarded but your reporter regrets to say that she cannot remember who the winners were.
Many thanks to all our members for their donations of food and prizes.
We hope to see you all again when we resume our meetings in Sept.

I let one count slip by somewhere, our May meeting was a smash with 75 members, family, and friends who gathered for the crowning ceremonies of our Mother of the Year Regina Buchanan with a well deserved tribute, and with her to share the honors was our outgoing Mother Carol-line Vukasovich. Each Mother present was pinned with a carnation, and our Mother of the year was presented with a bouquet of carnations and a gay corsage was pinned on our outgoing Mother. The climax of the evening which was most exciting and rewarding, when her family and grandchildren presented her with 16 red roses from her 1G grandchildren, this to me represents a delightful saga of a warm and loving family.

Once again death has removed from our midst a beloved member, Ann Zagar. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Zagar, and a dedicated mother to Joseph, Edward, Ann Preng and Marion Boyle, and a member of our branch for 30 years. Most of you know that she was ailing for many years, which was only felt by her family. The years have been difficult for them, busy with their own burdens. However, she will be remembered for her many kind deeds, her generous contributions and her relentless crusade of what was right, it was through her able efforts in the formative years that our branch increased In membership and Influence. She was
in every sense a lady, and I am privileged to pay a small homage to her for her many contributions to our branch. I join with the officers and members in extending to the bereaved family our deepest sympathy, and a fond farewell to you Ann Zagar. may you enjoy your eternal rest!

No. 100, Fontana, Calif. We have a new spiritual advisor now that Father Horvath has retired. I called on Father Joseph Snoj who graciously condescended to replace our spiritual advisor of many years, and to aid us in any capacity that he is called upon and able to perform.
Father Snoj was born at Zagorje ob Savi in Slovenia. He was ordained in Tržič na Gorenjskem and came to America in 1948 and his first parish in the new homeland was in Chino, Calif. Father Snoj was also pastor in several other southern California parishes before coming to us at Sacred Heart including Loma Linda for 14 Vž years. Father Snoj comes from a family of 12 children, G of whom are still living in Slovenia. He has a brother who became a priest ana also a sister who is a nun. There is much more that can be written about our delightful and informative pastor but space does not permit.
The Sacred Heart parish is holding a Fiesta on August 21-22-23. Let’s all get behind Father Snoj and help make it a huge success. OK?
The Horzens are at it again. You recall the article about our flying nurse? Well, this time it is Cecelia that I am happy to write about. To begin with, she was born in Fontana, attended St. Joseph’s Academy from kindergarden through 8th grade and then spent four years at Fontana High School where she was active in the California State Federation Math Club, Pep Club, President of the Drill Team, Zonta Club, Inter Club Council and Senior Class Council. She then attended California State Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo where she majored in math, received her bachelor of science degree in Math and was a member of the Math Club and Treasurer of her senior class. She also has been on the Dean’s Honor List in 1970. How is that for a list of accomplishments? Pretty good, I’d say! Her future lies in the field of teaching. As a graduation present, her proud parents are giving her a trip to Europe and Slovenia. Cecelia is the daughter of Frank and Cecelia Horzen.
May the Lord hear the prayers and well wishes that are being offered on behalf of our sick members and friends.
Birthday congratulations are extended to sisters Jennie Stone and Josephine Squolt; many happy returns.
Sister Julia Kukman received so many cards and flowers that she is unable to thank her friends individually, so the Zarja will be the instrument for her to send out thanks to each and everyone who remembered her during the illness that nec-essitatetd hospitalization. Julia is back among us again and looking very well.
A Prayer for Today
This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place some thing I have traded for it. I want it to be sain not loss; good not evil; success not failure, in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it. See you next month. God willing.

No. 103, Washington, D. C.. — Our
spring here in Washington was very beautiful. The azaleas and dogwood trees are indescribable, and have to be seen in order to be appreciated.
We are hopeful the weather will be as nice for our many friends who will be arriving for the dedication of the Slovenian Chapel in August. The ladies of Branch No. 103 will welcome the visitors upon their arrival on Thursday, August 12th, in the reception hall of St. Thomas Apostle Catholic church, 2G65 Woodley Road, N. W., Washington, D. C.
We trust that all members will have an enjoyable summer. Several of our ladies and their families will be traveling to Slovenia this summer —Freda Michelitch and her mother, Mrs. Mary Michelitch left in June.
Also, Ana Cernelc, lea Zebot, and Nika Kovacic and families are planning to visit their homeland.
Our Mother’s Day program was a very lovely event. The program o-pened with the crowning of the Blessed Virgin. The festivities just would not be complete without the assistance of our wonderful Junior members who always come through with flying colors in their capable performances. We are especially proud of the Antolin family, who have such a long distance to travel in order to attend our meetings. We were honored with the presence of
5	of their girls and 21 sons. The girls sang several Slovenian songs. Also, Lydia Bevec and her brother played the guitar and accordian; and their mother, Jane Bevec, read a Mother’s
Day message in both English and Slovenian. The highlight, of course, was the presentation of a beautiful bouquet to Matilda Terselic, who was chosen by the members to be our Mother of the Year. Tillie has been a very active member of our branch, and we are all deeply appreciative of her enthusiasm and hard work for the past three years of her membership. Congratulations, Tillie!
Hostesses for our Mother’s Day party were Dora Voyatzes, Helena Špacapan, Ida Gregorič, and Irene Planinšek. The refreshments were superb, and the hostesses were outstanding. Everything was delicious—■ and such a variety!
We had a variety of activities which proved to be successful. The sale of books and stationery was interesting, and our “B” games were fun for all, especially with so many gifts to choose from. Irene Planinšek furnished the potica which was the prize of a Slovenian auction—our first attempt. Not only was it financially successful, but we had loads of fun.
Congratulations to all the graduates this spring. We are especially proud of our Junior member, Ivanka Antolin, who will graduate this spring, and will soon be entering college. Congratulations are also extended to Mr. and Mrs. Chokel who have become grandparents.
We are happy that Mary Lou Terselic and Jane Bevec were able to attend our Mother’s Day Party, after having been on the sick list. Our wishes for your complete recovery.
Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the Editor on the death of her Mother. She was indeed a person to be admired for her energy and resourcefulness in accomplishing all that she did. Her loss is greatly felt by the entire community.
We are sorry to learn that our Spiritual Advisor will be leaving us soon. Father Ceglar, who has completed his work at Catholic University with a Doctorate degree, will be returning to Slovenia. We hope this will not be a final goodbye, but we anticipate that some day we will be able to renew acquaintances.

SLOVENSKA KAPELA V WASHINGTON VABI
Bližajo se dnevi posvetitve Slovenska kapela v ameriškem Narodnem svetišču v Washingtonu. Mogočna cerkev, posvečena Marijinemu Brezmadežnemu spočetju, je največja katoliška cerkev v Združenih državah in sedma največja na svetu. In v tem katoliškem središču Amerike so si Slovenci zgradili svojo kapelo
—	slovensko kapelo Marije Pomagaj z Brezij. Izmed vseh spomenikov, ki so ji jih postavili v tej deželi Ameriški Slovenci, bo Slovenska kapela najtrajnejši in najpomembnejši versko-kulturni spomenik.
Posvetitev 15. avgusta letos bo krona vseh prizadevanj in vsega dela — od prvih dopisov vodilnim slovenskim osebnostim po Ameriki do spominske knjige, ki bo izšla za to priliko. Nabiralna akcija za zgraditev kapele je zajela vse ameriške Slovence — od vzhodne do zahodne obale in celo iz Kanade. Za kapelo so prispevali vsi — stari in novi naseljenci, premožni in siromašni, upokojenci in otroci. Zato bo tudi posvetitev kapele — praznik vseh ameriških Slovencev vseh živečih generacij. Prišli bodo od blizu in daleč — tudi iz Kanade, raznih delov Evrope in posebna skupina celo iz Slovenije. Letos bo prvič, da bo posebno letalo pripeljalo veliko skupino udeležencev iz Slovenije direktno v ameriško prestolnico. (Prvo
skupino je pripeljal škof Jeglič na Evharistični kongres v Chicago leta 1926). Rojaki iz domovine bodo prišli iz New Yorka, Bridgeporta, Forest Cityja, Chi-Svojo udeležbo so najavili posamezniki iz zelo oddaljenih krajev Združenih držav, v skupinah pa bodo prišli iz New Yorka, Bridegporta, Forest Cityja, Chicaga, Joliete, Denverja in najmočnejša skupina — 10 avtobusov — iz Clevelanda. V okviru posvetitvenih svečanosti bodo organizirane razne kulturne in družabne prireditve, ki bodo na programu v petek 13. in v soboto 14. avgusta zvečer. Zunanji obiskovalci si bodo v posebnih avtobusih mogli v soboto čez dan ogledati in obiskati največje zanimivosti in posebnosti ameriške prestolnice. V soboto 14. avgusta zvečer pa je na programu slavnostna akademija in nato banket.
Sodelovali bodo člani Slovenskega gledališča iz Toronta pod vodstvom Vilka Čekute, gledališka umetnika Vladimir in Izabela Kralj iz Milwaukee, zbor Dawn Slov. ženske zveze in mešani zbor Korotan iz Clevelanda pod vodstvom ing. rani pod cerkvijo kjer smo pri raznovrstnih dobrotah, ki so jih napekle naše skrbne članice, proslavili gospo Pavlin, mati leta ter vse naše matere. Najstarejših zvestih članic, katere so že dočakale osemdeset let, smo se pa spomnile s primernimi darili. Srečolov, katerega glavni dobitek je bil krasen "poncho”, ki ga Je naredila gospa Pavlin, je prav lepo uspel. Kar precej navzočih je s veseljem ujelo srečo. Za zabavo sta nam zaigrala mlada har-monikaša Tonček Buh in Johnny Bur-jek, par tako poskočnih, da so članice kar poprijele in zapele zraven. Res je lepo kadar sestre v veseli družbi prebivajo skupaj.
Ponovno Vas vabimo na romanje k Mariji Pomagaj v Lemont, 111. 17 in 18. julija, sredi avgusta pa v Washington na blagoslovitev slovenske kapele. Čim več se nas bo zbralo skupaj tem bolj slovesno bo. Odločite se in pridite.

We had our Mother of the Year Dinner May 13th honoring Ann Senko, who was presented with a beautiful pink rose bud corsage. The food at the Little Safe was delicious. We wish our Mother of the Year a healthy and joyous reign. We had a nice turn out; there were 17 members present and two special guests, Mary Catherine Peters who is Ann’s daughter and Martha Skofic a very dear friend of Ann’s.
Alice Sheets and Audrey Krulic will be the next hostesses. Our meeting was held June 6th at the home of Alice Sheets. God Bless You All!

Št. 14, Euclid, Ohio. Na naši junijski seji, je bila bolj slaba udeležba. Menda so članice pozabile priti, ker je bilo vreme lepo in dovolj dela po vrtovih.
Mrs. Matilda Rupert je bila precej bolana v bolnici. Zdaj se že zdravi na domu, ter ji vse članice želimo kar najhitrejše ozdravljenje.
Mrs. Mikovič se je lepo zahvalila za čestitke, katere je prejela na majski seji kot naša letošnja zaslužna mati.
Vsem članicam sporočam, da v juliju ne bo seje, toda v augustu bomo zopet nadaljevale s sejami, to je na prvi torek.
Ta mesec mnogo našich članic odpotuje na razne kraje. V staro domovino Slovenjo je odpotovala čla. Ana Bizjak z družino in ta mesec bo tudi šla v Ljubljano Mrs. Rosi Mikovič. Vsem potujočim želimo srečno pot, da bi se srečno vrnili.
Mrs. Marold se tudi zahvaljuje za darilo, ki ga Je dobila od naše podružnice za njeno 50 letnico poroke.
Mrs. Vidovič je po dolgem času prišla na sejo. Po božji dobroti je zopet ozdravela. Bog daj vsem bolnim hitrega zdravja. Mrs. Vidovič se tudi zahvaljuje za obiske ob času bolezni.

Chicaga na prvem sestanku čikaških slovenskih društev oktobra 19G7 v sveto- štefanski dvorani. Navzoči so bili od leve proti desni: Fr. Fortunat Zorman, O. F. M., Albina Novak, Fr. v	kratkem času dosegal 20 članov. V nekaj tednih so Čikažani prispevali nad $4,000.
Št. 20, Joliet, III. — Iskrene čestitke našemu duhovnemu vodju, Msgr. M. Butala k njegovemu zlatemu maš-niškemu jubileju, katerega je slavil dne 22. in 23. maja. Ta izredni dogodek se redko vrši v vrstah naših duhovnikov, zato smo Jolietčani u-pravičeno ponosni, da je ravno naš župnik dosegel to izredno čast. Zlato-mašnik je naš duhovni vodja še izza časa ko je bil premeščen is Waukegan. Prišel je na faro, kjer je bi) rojen, krščen in posečal prve šole. Dobro se spominjam njegovega pok. očeta Johna Butala, ki je bil naš osebni prijatelj in vedno ponosen na sina o katerem je napovedal, “da bo enkrat še za župnika pri naši dari.” Njegove besede so se uresničile In kako bi bil vesel zlatega jubilega, če bi še živel med nami.
Koliko je Msgr. Butala storil za našo faro, pričajo dejstva. Naša fara je iz skromnih početkov ogromno napredovala. Uredil je vse moderno, za kar smo mu farani hvaležni in so se v velikem številu udeležili dvo-dnevih slavnosti v njegovo čast. Pri njegovi maši sta bila navzoča dva škofa, župan mesta, občinski odborniki in zastopstva društev od blizu in daleč.
Bog daj Msgr. Butala še mnogo let med nami, da bi živel v zdravju in zavoljstvu ter dočakal še biserno obletnico mašništva. To so želje vseh faranov.
Naše čestitke tudi zaslužni materi naše podružnice za to leto, Mrs. Frances Hubert. Ona je naša dolgoletna članica in več letna nadzornica,
ki vedno rada pomaga pri delu za napredek podružnice. Na dan Materinske proslave, ji je preds. Emma Planinšek naprej pripela pušeljc, jo posadila na častno mesto ter v govoru naštela vse njene zasluge pri podr. Prejela je darilo od podr. in odbornic ter raznih članic. Za lepa iznenadenja se je Frances lepo zahvalila. Na to sejo so prihitele vse njene sestre, nečakinja in drugo sorodstvo, da z njo praznujejo to posebno čast. Tri nečakinje so tudi postale ta dan naše članice:	Loretta
Parasci, Marilyn Goss in Dorothy Končar.
Ker je mesec maj posvečen materam, so navzoče matere tudi prejele rudeči nagelj povezan z lepim trakom. Vse članica, ki imajo ime Mary, so bile deležne tega darila. Pri podr. imamo tri članice:	Mary Spelich,
njena hči Kay Demich, Mary Lee Demick in pa pok. Mary Vlasich. Posebno čast se je izkazalo tem štirim iz ene družine.
Prečitano je bilo pismo č. ses. Marie Michelle (Gregorich), ki je že več let v Chille. V ta namen se je nabrala mala vsota in se odposlala za njene misijone.
Vse mladinske članice so vabljene na piknik, ki se bo vršil na vrtu tajnice, Olga Ancel. Dan in ura bo sporočena v lokalnem listu.
Dolgoletna članica, Mary Schmid-berger je na dan seje praznovala svoj rojstni dan in vse članice smo ji zapele: “Happy Birthday”. Prejela je darilo za ta dogodek.
Članica Helen Strojin iz Rockdale je darovala krasni ročno delani prt, ki je bil izžreban na številke. Srečna je bila Olga Ancel. Druge dobitke so dobile Mary Fedo, Mayme Atland, in Catherine Knezz. Torto, katero je darovala Mary Mihelič, je dobila pod-preds. Josephine Muster.
Zaprisežene so bile poleg zgoraj imenovanih tudi Mary Mavec.
Na čast materam je sledil program s slovenskim plesom naših mladinskih članic v narodnih nošah: Elaine Končar, Andrea Barbich, Marie Olga Ancel, Rosanne Ruth in Merle Lustik. Za ples je igral Bill Končar, sin članice Dorothy K.
V bolnišnici se je nahajala Mrs. Ursula Skubic, dalje Mrs. Ann Pucel in Mrs. May Rose Schumn je imela operacijo na nogah, pa je vseeno prišla na sejo, čeprav je imela nogo v gibsu, da je prisostvovala počastit-
vi	sorodnice Frances Hubert. Mrs. John Jevitz ml., si je tudi zlomila roko.
Naše sožalje družini Margaret Ashway, katera hčerka Pat je naša članica ter tudi sestra pok. Molly Molek; sožalje tudi Mary Mihelich, ki je izgubila očeta Vincent Nieznanski, dalje Anna Papesh, ki je izgubila soproga Michael, za katerim žaluje tudi sin Mike jr., ke Je pogrebnik in sinaha, vse naše članice. Ses. Alma Munich je izgubila brata Stefan Ka-voris in sožalje tudi družini pok. John Dragovan, katerim je umrl mož In brat John D. Vsem pokojnim večni mir!
Hitro okrevnaje želimo Mary Ho-chevar, ki si je zlomila roko, kakor vsem bolanim.
Čestitke Mr. in Mrs. John Strle, ko so dobili še eno punčko v družino, ki je že postala naša mladinska članica.
Iskrene čestitke č. ses. Maria Per-petua, roj. Kajzer, doma iz Št. Vida nad Ljubljano, ki je na dan nove maše Rev. Klepec, praznovala njen 90 letni rojstni dan. Ko je to sporočil Msgr. navzočim v dvorani, so prišli v trumah ji čestitati. Ona je dolgo let učila v šoli Sv. Jožefa.

Pri naši podr. so dve članice nenadoma izgubile može. Pokojni Anton Hosta zapušča ženo Marie z družino in pok. Rudolph C. Glau, zapušča ženo Eertho in družino. Naše sožalje vsem žalujočim.
Imamo pet članic, ki ne morejo priti na seje in prireditve, posebno kadar obhajamo Materinski dan ali Božičnico.
Dne 5. maja smo počastile vse matere, ne samo mene, čeravno sem bila mati leta 1971. Letos nas je bilo kar precej, ker je prisostvovalo tudi nekaj pevcev zbora Triglav, kamor spadam tudi jaz, in krožek št. 77, SNPJ pod vodstvom Marie Pivik in spremljal jih je Frank Culkar. Kar na tihem so vse pripravljali in napravili lepo presenečenje. Zbor Triglav mi je izročil šopek nageljnov z lepim nagovorom Margie Persutti. Od krožka pa mi je zapela solo vnukinja Terry Abbott in podarila rože od mladih pevcev. Hvala Marie Pivik za trud in skrb. Enako tudi naši Ančka Palcic, enako solo od vnuka in rože, zakar sem bila zelo vesela. Moja družina je bila navzoča in smo tako skupaj obhajali ta praznik. Lepa hvala za darilce, ki mi bo v trajni spomin. Hvala Helen Konkoy, govornici. Naša predsednica, Mrs. Lach mi naroča, da bi se lepo zahvalila tudi v njenem imenu vsem članicam, ki so pomagale z delom in pripravami. Veliko je bilo darovano za srečne nagrade. Hvala vsem! Kuharice so pripravile zelo okusno večerjo, žal ne vem za vsa imena, toda one večkrat pomagajo k tako lepemu uspehu.
Vsled bolezni je morala ostati doma, Mary Estanek. Posebna hvala velja tudi uranicam, ki se trudijo, da imajo članice dvakrat v letu skupno prireditev in tako pridemo skupaj. Kar se tiče mesečnih sej je povsod tako, da se opuščajo, morda je res, da se staramo, ali pa se bojimo ven v noč. Pozdrav vsem!

Št. 25, Cleveland, O. — Kar težko se je pripraviti k pisanju, ker je vedno kaj žalostnega za poročati, posebno še sedaj ko smo kar dve naši glavni uradnici izgubile tako vkrat-kem času. Vedno bomo pogrešale našo gl. taj. Mrs. Albina Novak, ker ona je od začetka naše Zveze neumorna delovala v prid naše Slovenske Ženske organizacije. Draga Albina, za vsa Tvoja dobra dela, ki si jih storila v prid naše Zveze, naj Ti dobri Bog obilo poplača. Ti pa mirno počivaj v ameriški zemlji. Spominjali se Te bomo v naših molitvah. Ravno tako Josephine Železnikar. Vam želim mirni počitek in naj Vam dobri Bog vse poplača.
Pri naši podr. so nam od zadnjega poročila tudi umrle tri sestre: Frances Jukomin Homovec in Jennie Kadunc ter mladinska čla. Denise Drobnič. Vsem bodi večni mir in pokoj. Ko smo šle kropit našo mladinsko članico, Miss Drobnič, smo obenem tudi obiskale našega Tonija Petkovška v njegovih novih prostorih. Kako krasno ima vse urejeno in razstavljeno. Dosti ima iz Amerike, ker gre vsako leto na izlete in iz domovine vsakovrstne stvari. Ima prav prijetno radio oddajo kar iz njegove trgovine, ker nam vedno kaj veselega povedo in oglašajo. Čestitke Tony in Mr. Pestotnik in drugim, ki vse to oskrbujejo.
Naša predsednica Mary Kolegar, se je odločila, da gre letos v Slovenijo obiskati svojce z njenim soprogom. Prvič kar je zdoma, zato Vama še posebno želimo dobrega oddiha v rojstni domovini in zdrav povratek nazaj med svoje domače.
Prosim članice, katere še niste plačale, da pošljete, ali pridete na seje, ali 25. v mesecu. Ne čakajte, da vas bom opominjala. Pol leta je za nami in čas tako hitro teče.
Drage sestre, Vas vse lepo pozdravljam, bolnim želim ljubega zdravja in na svidenje na seji v juliju.

Št. 30, Aurora, lil. — Pravkar sem prišla iz kapele in vam bom povedala kaj in zakaj se mi tako dopade. Vsako jutro po zajutreku izvzemši nedeljo, gremo v kapelo kakih 6 ali 8 oseb in pojemo pol ure cerkvene pesmi. Ena 90 letna žena, nam lepo igra na klavir in en 90 letni mož skrbi in razdeli knjige pesmarice. Kmalu za njimi sem jaz 85 let, dragi so pa 2 “mladeniča in par mladenk” okrog 70 let.
In prav danes je bila na vrsti lista lepa viža ljubke slovenske pesmi;
Tebe ljubi duša moja, o Zveličar moj, Tvojo naj sladkost okuša, daj ji pokoj svoj! Pridi o pridi, skleni se z menoj, Naj bo skoraj srce moje, dom prijeten Tvoj!
Ne znam sicer angleške pesmi in ne vidim tako hitro brat v pesmarici, pela pa sem jo še bolj glasno kar po slovensko, ker je glih taka viža, kot jo imamo Slovenci.
Rada bi vedela, če so Amerikanci dobili viže od Slovencev, ali pa narobe? Skoraj bi mislila, da so A-merikanci posneli od Slovencev, saj toliko berem o slovenskem petju, o pevskih društvih, koncertih in kaj še vse! Srečni ljudje po večjih naselbinah, kjer poslušate slovensko petje!
Čestitke Clevelandu, ki uči že četrto generacijo slovenskega petja! Jaz sem pa vesela, da sem pela v kapelici “slovensko pesem”, med tem ko so drugi peli angleško. Tukaj v Aurori ni več slišati slovenske govorice, vse je pomrlo, mladina je pa amerikanska. Tudi tukaj v tem domu sem edina Slovenka in se mi zdi, da bi bila kar srečna če bi prišla še kaka Slovenka ali Slovenec sem; in če misli kdo iy v dom ostarelih, mu gotovo svetujem, da pride sem v Auroro!

Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Dočakali smo lepo poletje, pa se bomo naj-brže zopet pritoževali, da je prevroče.
Imam žalostno novico za poročati, da je dne 17. maja na svojem domu nenadoma umrl poznani rojak in velik prijatelj Zveze. Mr. JOHN BE-VEC. Zadela ga je srčna kap v starosti G4 let. Pokojni je bil miren človek, ki je rad vsakemu pomagal. Imel je važno javno službo Commissioner (poverjenik) za Washington County, ali okrožje. Naši podružnici in SŽZ je bil izredno naklonjen in pri vsaki naši prireditvi nam je rad pomagal in mnogokrat je bil za stoloravnatelja.
On je tudi pomagal ustanoviti našo podr. s ses. Mrs. Anna Petrič. Naše globoko sožalje soprogi in družini. Naj blagi John, počiva v miru.
Smrt res pride nepričakovano in pokojni John Bevec je imel veliko skrbi za bus za Washington, D. C. kamor se odpravljamo v augustu ob priliki svečanosti posvetitve Slovenske kapele v Marijini katedrali. On je veliko pomagal pri nabiranju darilnih prispevkov za kapelo. Bog mu bodi dobri plačnik .
Iskreno sožalje tudi članici Anna Oklesen, ki je dne 24. maja izgubila soproga. Umrl je v Canonsburg bolnišnici. Bolehal je dalje časa. Z Johnom Bevcem sta bila soseda. Oba naj počivata š miru božjem.
Več članic se je odpravilo na obisk Slovenije. Vsem želim veselo snidenje s sorodniki in srečen povratek v Ameriko.

HITRA SODBA
Pameten človek se uči iz svojih napak. Zaveda se, da so bile njegove sodbe v preteklosti večkrat zgrešene. Zato se obotavlja v danih primerih napraviti prehitro sodbo. Brez dvoma je veliko hitrih sodb bilo prenagljenih. Poleg tega nihče ne more brati, kaj ima kdo na pameti. Zato sv. Bernard pravi: “Ce ne moreš opravičiti dejanja, opraviči vsaj namen.”
Nekateri ljudje so tako ustvarjeni, da ne morejo voditi daljšega razgovora brez obiska starih grobov, kjer imajo samo narahlo zapokane spomine na razne škandale, ki so se zgodili kdo ve lcedaj. Te znova odkopljejo in jih oberejo do kosti. Gospodova grožnja takim je huda. Takole pravi:	“S	kakršno mero merite s tako
se vam bo odmerilo. Ne sodite, da ne boste sojeni.”
Hudo bo, če bo Bog nas tako sodil kakor mi druge sodimo, če mi vidimo na drugih samo napake, pomanjkljivosti in slabosti, nas bo Gospodova roka hudo u-darila.
Iz Hoje za Kristusom si lahko zastavimo sledeče vprašanje:	“Ako	sam	ne	moreš vedno tak biti kakor
bi rad, kako hočeš, da bi bili drugi vedno tebi pogodu?” Radi bi, da bi bili drugi popolni, sami pa ne poboljšamo svojih napak. Kako smo iznadljivi pri opravičevanju svojih napak, ne pa napak drugih. Takoj lahko uvidimo, kako redko	bljižnjega tako	sodimo	kakor	sami sebe.
Dobro je	če včasih pomislimo na	besede nekega žup-
nika svojim faranom. Če bi farani moč svojih opazk, ki sledijo razne farne prireditve, obrnili v dobro in po magali nraditi namesto podirati in bi poleg tega še malo molili, bi imeli skoraj popolno in vzorno župnijo.” Zanimivo pa resnično.
Važno je da uravnavamo svoje misli na dobre stvari. Takoj bomo opazili napredek. Seveda bomo opazili tudi napake. Pa zakaj bi jih morali širiti? Če bi se s tistim, ki je storil napako pogovorili, bi verjetno, našli pravo rešetiv. Samo koliko ljudi pa ima korajžo to storiti? Če nimamo	kaj dobrega za	povedat,	je še	vedno boljše
da molčimo	kakor pa da	trosimo	slabo	voljo in ne-
zaupanje. Pomagajmo graditi in ne razdirati.
Objavljamo slovenski prevod poznane angleške pesmi, ki je posebno pri srcu ge. Marie Prisland in je bila pred leti poklonjena zelo uglednim osebnosti v Sheboyganu. Pokojni pesnik Ivan Zorman je napisal slovenski prevod na njeno izrečno željo. Besedilo pesmi sledi:

Št. 100, Fontana, Calif. — Ker se
počutim malo boljše, se po dolgem času zopet oglašam. Hvala Bogu, i-mam veliko za poročati, kaj se vse godi pri nas. Imamo odlično poročevalko v angleščini, ses. Edith Drawe-nik. God bless her, toda v slovenščini se nobena ne oglasi.
Junijska seja je bila precej dobro obiskana. Najprej smo vse vstale, da izkažemo čast in sožalje naše pok. gl. tajnice in bivše predsednice ALBINE NOVAK. Njen največji ponos je bilo delo za napredek Ameriške Slovenije. Naj ji bo ljubi Bog njen dober plačnik. Hčerkama Corinne Leskovar in Gloria Nuško ter njunim družinam izrekamo naše globoko sožalje. V njen spomin smo darovale $25 za Scholarship Fund.
Ta mesec praznujeta 25 letnico zakonskega življenja Mr. and Mrs. Pe-trich sr. Surprise party jima prirejajo otroci. Gotovo se Mr. Petrlcli boljše počuti. Mi jima s čestitkami, želimo še dolgo vrsto let srečnega življenja.
Naša preds. Jean Kurelich se je 21 tedna zdravila v Palm Springs to-
plicah in sedaj je zopet čvrsta in ak tivna kot prej.
Dne 16. t. m. so odpotovali v staro domovino na obisk Mr. Frank Horzen s sinom in hčerkama Cecilia in Barbara. Želimo jim veliko zabave in srečni povratek. Mama bo pa doma pripravljala za ženitnino, ko se vrnejo bo poroka hčerke Barbare. Želimo jima mnogo božjega blagoslova v zakonu.
Carolin Coliopi je odšla v Cleveland za nedoločen čas in na ženitnino vnuka. Tam ima tudi otroke. Želim ji veliko zabave in srečni povratek.
Ta mesec praznujeta 50 letnico zakonskega življenja naša dobra prijatelja, vsem dobro poznana Mr. in Mrs. John Pegan. Čestitamo jima in želimo, da bi dočakala še 75 obletnico.
Poročati moram tudi žalostno novico, da je nenadoma umrl soprog od hčere Mary Štruke. Imel je že dalje časa srčno bolezen, vseeno je za Anno in njeno mamo hud udarec. Naše globoko sožalje. Mary Štruke, je še vedno v convalescent hospital zaradi srca že 2 leti. Ona ima notri malo
baterijo, da pomaga srcu delovati. Bila bi zelo vesela kartice, ker ji je dolg čas ter ne vemo ne dneva ne ure, ko nas Bog pokliče.
Tiste, ki ste naročile kuhinjsko knjigo prosim, da še počakate, ker še ni dotiskana.
Gotovo vam je znano, da je naš duhovni svetovalec č. Father Francis Horvat šel v pokoj. Na njegovo mesto je sedaj prišel č. Father Jožef Snoj, ki je v Etiwanda v cerkvi Presv. Srca Jezusovega.
Seje ne bo do septembra, toda družabni klub bo imel še naprej svojo zabavo. Seveda ses. Sušel je vodnica in ona vam bo že sporočila ter vse vabimo k veliki udeležbi.
Po seji smo imele dober prigrizek in za žejne je bilo preskrbljeno, kakor tudi darovi to vse na račun naših slavljenk rojstnih dnevov: Mary Vidergar, Vicki Potepan, Mary Hren, Jos. Prudich, Anna Smrdu, Anna Logo, Fay Vidergar in Lucille Pterich, sweet 16. God bless you all!

Presented to me a few Mother’s Days ago was a wooden plaque with this saying:

That was my introduction to today’s world of meaningful sayings on banners, plaques and posters.
In pre-Council days religious catalogs were filled primarily with statues, water fonts, crucifixes, prayer books, rosaries and holy pictures. Nowadays our children enjoy the new religious catalogs which contain such items as pendants, crucifixes, Charlie Brown articles, hooks on marriage, pamphlets on parent-child relationship, records, films, teaching aids, candles and holders, bibles and prayer books.
Interesting are the plaques providing the home with a "pleasant grace, gentle humor, a nostalgia of meaning and warmth." Early American and Pennsylvania Dutch designs come in a variety of sizes, colors and styles. Here are a few.

There are dramatic posters portraying Christian love and hope — the need for men to look with new eyes “to respond as a conscious Christian and find other men if he is to find God.” On one of them Walt Whitman says:	Truth lies
waiting in all things—unfolding itself from living buds. But it must first be in yourself. It shall come from your soul. It shall be love.
The walls of our son’s room at his university were decorated with such peace posters as:

Pope Paul— Peace must be built; it must be built up everyday by works of PEACE.
John F. Kennedy—Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.
Also included in his gallery of posters with appropriate wording were:
