' Bogov kot" — "God's Corner"
(Bogov or Bogkov kot is taken from the name given to the statue of God called “Bogec”.)
In Slovenia, our parents and grandparents carried on an old tradition of religious nature which is symbolized on the Cover of our Christmas Edition of Zarja. It’s the “Bogov kot” or “God’s Corner” where the family kept their treasured family altar. Our design was done by Emilija Raz-man-Bucik and somewhat depicts the Bogov kot in her own home where the patron saint, Sacred Heart of Jesus, usually stood alone on the spot.
At Christmastime, however, it became the setting for the Nativity and was decorated by members of the family in a loving ceremony.
This Christmas we hope that the Infant Child comes to your homes as He does to His little manger in the Slovenian corner and grant you blessings of love and peace.

Program was short and two young accordian players who are great-grands'ons of Mary Tomsic were wonderful and rendered many songs. Audience enjoyed them very much and the applause was great. The youngest brother who is only 9 years old won first prize in a button box competition held in Cleveland, Ohio last year. President Anna Trontel and her committee are to be complimented on a fine attendence at the convention and also on the elaborate banquet.
Ohio - Michigan State Convention held October 29th was well' represented with seventy eight members present at the meeting. Delegates who traveld the furthest were five from Detroit, Mich., ten from Lorain, Ohio, ten from Barberton and three guests from Chicago, Ml. Our guest and main speaker was editor, Corinne Leskovar. At the meeting she spoke on Zarja and other important issues that were brought up. Meeting was presided by State President Mary Bostian. Meeting lasted two hours. We remembered all our sister members who passed on. Honor guards of br. 32 held lighted candles and for each deceased member the light was blown out. Prayer was said which climaxed the meeting.
We then all assembled the large and spacious hall of the Slovenian National Home. Present were 450 quests at the banquet. Pittsburgh came in With one bus full. Dinner was delicious which was served at the round tables and prepared by one of our famous cooks, Steffie Smolic. Program was short and main speaker was Editor Corinne Leskovar. She gave a very interesting speech which impressed every one present and wish she would publish it in the Zarja. Combined branches presented her with a beautiful plaque which was engraved to Corinne Leskovar — in recognition for twenty years service, 1952-1972, as Editor of S.W.U. official Organ, ZARJA-THE DAWN, from S.W.U. of Ohio-Michigan, Oct. 29, 1972.
Dawn Choral group rendered three beautiful songs and a duet by Til lie Spehar and Mimi Rezonia directed by Mr. Frank Gorensek. Eileen Evancic and Gary Jaketich rendered a number of songs. Audience were very impresed with them due to the fact that Gary Jaketich is a new singer and has a beautiful voice. He sings with the Cleveland
PRESIDENTS Message
Dear Sister Members and Friends,
Here we find ourselves in the last month of the year. This is the important month when all members are urged to go to their branch meetings to elect officers who shall take over duties for the coming year of 1973. I hope that no one will decline if nominated for office as sometimes it is good for a branch to get a new person in and put new activity into the organization. To aill branches and officers who shall take on their duties for the year of 1973 I wish you all good luck and success and I shall be at your service at all times.
"Woman of the Year" membership campaign is in effect now until March 31, 1973. It is up to the President of each branch to do her part in emphasizing the drive for new members by appealing to each member to bring in one new member; this will help campaign to double the quota and also build up the membership in your branch.
STATE CONVENTIONS OF 1972
State Conventions for 1972 are all over and reports on the lllinois-lndiana, Colorado, and Minnesota State Days have been in the November issue of Zarja and all have been very successful
Yours truly attended the State Convention held October 8th, held at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the convention meeting present were 68 members and presided by State President, Mary Tomsic. Many issues were discussed especially the Woman of the Year Campaign.
Mrs. Tomsic, State President for many years and a very active member in her Branch 71 Strabane, Pa. gave up her presidency due to ill health. In her place was elected Anna Trontel of Pittsburgh, Pa. who also is president of Br. 26. Mary Tomsic, Mary Klemenčič and Mary Slaney have offered their assistance to help Anna during her term as State President. After the meeting a banquet was held in the Slovenian Home hall which was very well-attended.
A SPARK OF LIGHT
Pope John writes in his encyclical: "Every believer in this world of ours must be a spark of light, a center of Icve, a vivifying leaven amidst his feilowmen; and he will be this all the more perfectly, the more closely he lives in communion with God in the intimacy of his soul”.
In the gloomy darkness around us a Christian must start out as a spark of light showing the way to truth which leads back to God. This means that he must know and understand what he believes so he can give a reasonable account of his belief. Not only must he know, he must also live his faith because what we are is so much more eloquent than what we say.
The effectiveness of this “spark of light” will depend on our degree of love. We must be a center of love. Love must be the very essence of our existence. It must be a force in our lives, compelling, urging, driving. It must give us no rest, no respite. We must have something of the spirit of Paul who was jet-propelled by love.
If we are a spark of light and a center of love, we can’t help being a vivifying leaven in society. Every person has an influence for good or for evil. This is unavoidable. The more we abound with truth, the more we are filled with love, the greater is our influence for good. If we can multiply the number of people working for good, society will be a better place. Each one must pull his share.
The touchstone for all this is union with Christ: union with Christ through grace, union with Christ through prayer, union with Christ through imitation.
The closer to Christ we are the more effective we become as a source of “Light, love and leaven”.

Orchestra and also with Glasbena Matica. He is the grandson of Mary Stusek, Secretary of Branch 49, Noble, Ohio (Wickliffe) since the branch was organized.
State President Mary Bostian and her committee are to be highly complimented on the fine arrangement prepared for the meeting, Banquet and Program. Mary Bostian also has been re-elected for State President for term of three years.
According to reports on ail the State Conventions they have been the best this year since organized in 1961.

Illinois Day held at LaSalle
For our Annual Illinois and Indiana state convention which was held October 1, 1972, two busloads of members came from Branches 16, 95 and 20. Many other members arrived by car. There were about 156 members present, showing a greater attendance every year.
The day began with a High Mass at St. Roch’s Church in La Salle. Father Mike Železnikar celebrated the Mass and delivered a very interesting sermon.
After Mass we proceeded to St. Roch’s school gym fo' a delicious home made dinner hosted by Branch No. 24. I want to congratulate and thank the members of Branch No. 24 for aM their effort toward making this an outstanding occasion. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and also meeting the many friends whom we see only on these occasions.
After the dinner Mayor Al Grenia of La Salle gave a welcoming speech. Father Železnikar and Father Fitzsimmons congratulated the members and thanked them for attending.
The Convention was opened with a prayer by the State President for all living and deceased members. Our National Board was introduced, represented by Fanika Humar, National Secretary, Liz Zefran, National Treasurer, Corinne Leskovar, Editor, Anne Kompare, Auditor, Olga An-cel. Investment Secretary, and all Presidents of branches represented were introduced.
Fanika Humar gave an excellent speech in Slovenian and English. We also had a short report from our Editor, Corinne Leskovar.
Greetings were read from our Founder, Marie Prisland and State President of Ohio, Mary Bostian.
The delegates were called upon to read their reports. The minutes of the previous convention were read by Olga Ancel and accepted.
Nominations for State President were made and yours truly was elected for another term. Again I want to thank all the members who elected me as their State President.
After our floor discussion was closed, Fanika Humar closed our Convention with a prayer in Slovenian.
To the National Officers who sent greetings, to Father Železnikar, Father Fitzsimmons, Mayor Al Grenia and his wife, Helen - thank you all for contributing to the success of the convention. May God bless each and everyone of you.
Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and may Jesus keep you in his constant care during this Christmas Season and throughout the year.

At the October meeting it was decided to have a Christmas dinner combined with the annual meeting at Johnny’s Supper Club, there will be $1.00 exchange gifts. The meeting will begin at 3:45 P.M. and dinner will be served at 6 P.M. The date is the third Sunday in December. We hope to see each one of you present and bring new ideas along for 1973 program.
Our annual card party was a great success. Thank you Mesdames: Dorothy Kregel and Mary Turk, also to all the ladies who gave their services
and donated cakes.
It was a pleasure to see a large number of members and their friends present at the State Convention in Willard. We thank you Branch No. 102 for your hospitality and graciousness.

We all wish that our members would try to pay us a visit at least once a year like Mrs. Urbas did. Let us help you celebrate.
We mourn the loss of two members, Louise Ulle and Frances Skubic. We always pray for our members and our deepest sympathies go to the remaining families. We try to do our good deed by having four or five members attend the funeral of our members, going to church, having masses said and attending the burial.
Happy Anniversary greetings to Albina and Otto Zimmerman who were celebrating their 36 anniversary Nov. 26th.
As you will be reading this in December, I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Blessed New Year. The years are really going by fast - pretty soon it will be 1973. I wish we could start the new year with some new members. We

It looks like another interesting season for the Chicago S.W.U. bowling league. As of Oct. 24, only five games separated the first and eighth place teams.
Zefran Funeral Home, with a record of 16 wins and 8 losses, held onto first place by a slim margin. Wagner’s Bakery rose to second with 15 wins and 9 losses; Lawn Fence came up to third with 14 wins and 10 losses. Olose behind were: Reliance Federal (I31/2-IOI/2); K. and K. Market (13-11); Marquette Super Service
Wagner’s took over the lead in high team series with 2694; Zefran’s 944 remained the high team game. D. Maes held on in high individual series with 620; B. Zurek tied S. Gorka in high individual game with 227. These are all handicap scores.
It seems to be taking a long time to get back into the groove; high scores were a rarity in October. Stelle Gorka was on the ball, of course, with series of 542 (201 game), 540 (203 game) and 506. Shirley Melissa had a 525 series, with games of 200, 189 and 136.
I don’t know how I did it, but yours truly bowled the most pins over average during the month—a 483 series was 78 pins over my lowly 135 average. This included a 194 game. Grace Dellegrazie was 76 pins over her 129 average with a 463 series. Dorothy Ceska had a 371 series—74 pins over her 99 average. Tied with 73 pins over average were: Mitzi Krapenc (406 series) and Fran Smulski (460 series).
It was another good month for our railroad hotshots: L. Ovnik, 5-10 and 3-10; E. Statkus, 5-7 and 3-10(2); D. Maes, 4-7-10 and 3-10; M. Zahorsky, 5-6-7; F. Smulski, 6-7; A. Vucko, 3-7; F. Zefran, J. The thrilling and widely-acclaimed folklore and dance group of Slovenia will visit Chicago, on Sunday Feb. 4, 1973 for a concert at 6:30 p.m. sponsored by the Br. 2 of Slovenian Women's Union. This group is making their first American appearance and will tour major universities and other cultural centers of the U. S. on a two month visit. This is your opportunity to hear and see beautiful Slovenian folklore and classics of this nationality sung and danced at its best.
They are fabulous performers and will perform a delightful concert. Invite your families and friends.

The October meeting was quite well attended, but to those who weren't there, you missed a good discussion on future plans as well as the State Convention and the coming Poultry Card Party that was planned for Nov. 19th. Let’s hope for success as we close this year.
After the meeting, a lunch of coffee and two kinds of cake donated by Evelyn Laurich and myself, was served. Happy Birthday was sung to Evelyn and Theresa Suky who treated with a roll of candy. The groups favorite games were enjoyed for about 40 minutes.
Br. 12 had a bus load of 42 members who attended the Convention at Williard and members had their dinner paid for out of the treasury and because we always get good Slovenian style food and hospitality. I'm sure no one was sorry they went.
It was good to hear the Slovenian songs played and sung so well by their local folks, the mother and daughter combination were a delight to hear and later in the old hatl, it was a real treat to sing to the accordion playing of Anne Zakrajsek’s sister-in-law from Sheboygan. We missed Olga and Mrs. Prisland but the 92 year old woman whose name I forgot surely well-re-presented Sheboygan with her singing and pep. Wonder how many of us will be able to match her? Stavia Dober-sek was our delegate.
Remember your sick and deceased when praying and it’s getting close to dues time again, so if you’re behind, let’s catch up. Give me a call if you can’t make it and I’ll arrange to visit you to collect any money you owe as our dues to the Home Office have to be paid every month for every member.

San Francisco celebrated a most successful Anniversary Pot Luck Dinner in October on our regular meeting night. For those of you who could not attend you really missed a grand time. Josephine Aiuto our chairlady worked dilligently to make this a most memorable night. Jo, our passed Secretary who for a while, was unable to be too active has taken hold of the reigns again and you can certainly see what an improvement her leadership has made. Jo’s committee consisted of her two sisters, Helen Sustarich and our past financial Secretary Virginia (Ginny) Sustarich, her daughter Michele, nieces Doreen, Moreen and Ann and what a commit-
tee, it was! No stone was left unturned to make this a night to remember. Jo called the members herself on the phone and the donations of food were unbelievable; all the ladies who donated food brought enough so that there was plenty of everything; Apple Strudel, Bundt Cake, Povatica, Ravioli, Noodles, Green Beans oriental style, and salads too numerous to mention. All the ladies deserve a vote of thanks as the food was delicious and so nicely served by the committee. Oloth table covers, colorful flowers, and nice tablesettings made the evening most festive. It has been a long time since we have enjoyed such a fine evening. Our husbands and families attended making the evening even more enjoyable. To my cousin Jo 1 say, “take a nice bow, you did an excellent job and it was most appreciated!” Our president Rose Scoff was just beaming and thanked everyone for making our Anniversary party such a success.
Rose Scoff was unanimously voted State President by branch No. 13. She has done an excellent job so the members felt we would show a vote of confidence by a unanimous vote. Rose will represent us for the Convention knowing all the members wanted her as our representative. Success on the convention for 1973 Rose, and have a good time too.
Unhappiness visited the home of our beloved member Zorka Vukojevich with the loss of her dear Mother. No Mother enjoyed the company of a finer daughter than Zorka, she was so good and considerate of her Mom. It has been my privilage to have Zorka on my committees from time to time and I know how close Zorka was to her Mom, it is such a pity when one we love must leave us but we live in the knowlege that God called her home as she had completed her duties here on earth and she awaits our return to Heaven one of these days. Our deepest sympathy to Zorka and her entire family.
There are many plans for future meetings as we enjoy new blood with the enrollment of new members so Ladies attend the meetings and enjoy all the GOOD TIMES

On October 1st, nineteen of our ladies traveled to La Salle, Illinois to attend the Illinois State Convention. They were J'osephine Blasovich, Mary Brebrick, Gladys Buck, Jean Bukvich, Mary Crnokrak, Frances Grotkowski,
Pauline Klobučar, Josephine Krai, Mary Krznarich, Anna Lustig, Helen Maggio, Mary Maricich, Helen Pastrik, Dorothy Plebanski, Marge Prebil, Marge Spret-njak, Sylvia Spretnjak, Alvina Sreboth and Katie Triller. Father Železnikar cel-ebrater Mass at St. Roche’s Church and the Slovenian Choir sang beautifully. Afterwards we were served a delicious dinner by the La Salle Branch. During the course of the meeting our branch was honored to have our member, Anna Lustig, re-elected State President. She is already hard at work on next years convention hopefully to be held in Indianapolis.
Our sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Louise Kojan who passed away in October and to Angela Udovic upon the loss of her husband, Frank.
Edna Winters and Millie Skul celebrated their birthdays at the October meeting. In addition to the goodies they brought, Marie Cieslik baked the Pistachio pudding cake from Alvina Sreboth’s recipe in the October Zarja. It was delicious.
Plans were discussed for our Christmas parties. Anna Lustig is organizing the childrens party which will be held on the first Sunday in December at 2 P.M. Edna Winters is chairlady of the ladies party on Thursday December 14th at 6:30 P.M. Dinner will be served followed by a grab bag and a games party.
Jean Bukvich underwent surgery in October. She has our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

At our Oct. meeting we celebrated birthdays of four members who have also celebrated their Namesday during the month, those were, Frances Hubert and Theresa Marentich, auditors, Theresa Muhich, sargeant of arms and Frances Bottari. We all wished them many more years of health. Also a lunch was served; cakes donated by Emma Planinšek, Olga Ancel and Josephine Erjavec. Olga Ancel also prepared the coffee.

With the approaching of the Hoiliday Season it gives me this opportunity to wish all the members of the Slovenian Women’s Union Christmas Joy and blessings of the Season.
September 7th meeting got off to a fine start. It was gratifying to see	so	many in attendance. Much business
was	accomplished	for	the	remaining year. Josephine Aiuto,
Chairlady, gave an excellent report in preparation of coming events.
The weather	for	our	"Zveze Day" was delightful. It
war.	rewarding to	see	so	many at Mass and Father Vida'I
Vodušek as usual said the Mass. Father has been HI for sometime and we hope and pray for his recovery.
The “Pot Luck” dinner was a tremendous success, due to our members and friends for their cooperation and donations of such a variety of delicious food. Our sincere thanks goes to Josephine Aiuto, Chairlady and her sister Virginia Sustarich for a job well done. Our Founder Marie Prisland and Mary Bostian sent greetings for a successful “Zveza Day’’ which was read at the dinner.
It is appropriate at this time to give our President Rose Scoff a vote of thanks for all her efforts and devotion in keeping our Branch 13 so active. She has worked diligently for many years and represented many functions of the Slovenian Women’s Union. President Rose is a true leader of “Zveza”. I’m sure that she deserves our esteem and praise for all her good works. At our September meeting President Rose was re-elected unanimously as State President and will go to the Convention in 1973.

Wise. State Convention at Willard
The State Convention was an outstanding event. The Minutes of the previous meeting in Sheboygan were read by Margaret Fischer. They were approved as read.
The recording secretary for this Convention was Elsie Perko, who was appointed by her branch.
Marie Floryan, the National Vice-President, was the only National Officer attending. She gave a short talk on the need for new members and the great results derived from the State Convention meetings.
Our Founder, Marie Prisland was unable to attend and we missed her.
The delegates were then called on to give their reports. Br. 1, Margaret Fischer from Sheboygan and a group of 41 members; Br. 12, Stavia Dobersek from Milwaukee and 43 members; Br. 17, Marion Marolt of West Allis and 45 members, Br. 43, Frances Widensek from Milwaukee and 40 members; Br. 102, Willard, Elsie Perko and 35 members. A total of 204 members attended the meeting.
Each branch president and secretary was introduced. Then, an open discussion was held on the basis of delegates reports from the floor. Wisconsin will have several suggestions which will be read and presented to the National Convention in Chicago.
Congratulations were received from our Founder, Marie Prisland, also from Mary Bostian, State President of Ohio-Michigan, and Ann Lustig, State President of IIF.-lnd.
Ann Therese, Margaret Mary and Lisa of Flint, Mich. Margie and Rose are daughter’s of our Cousin Ann Zollar of Duluth, Minn. Margie, Wallace Shook and children were guests of President Rose for two weeks. Their vacation took them to many points of interest in the States.
We are happy for the safe return of our members from their sojourn throughout Europe. Sophia and Rudy Troya, Joe and Ann Fabian, Ivan and Katherine Cerper-mch, Kuzma and Mary Mirkovich, Joe and Ann Nanut (who are grandparents to a daughter for the first time, Congratulations) John and Ann Judnich, also to Joe and Frances Chiodo and Son who travel every year to far away places.

It is indeed a pleasure to mention our members who live too far to participate in our activities, our niece Agnes Pallmgren in Salt Lake City and Pauline Verich in Montana; they enjoy reading the “Zarja”.

At this time, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for the confidence you have shown in re-electing me to serve you as your Wisconsin State President. I will try to uphold the ideals for which the Slovenian Women's Union stands.
On the membership drive, I stressed the need for new members and how vital the factor is approached. Wisconsin has been striving for the magic goal of 1000 members. We were pretty close in the last campaign, but I am amost positive that the next campaign will bring us beyond.
West Allis will be the hosts for the next State Convention and 45th Anniversary of Br. 17.
Just before closing the meeting, Mr. John Snedic of Greenwood, Wise, expressed his views as an American tourist visiting the Slovenian homeland of his parents.
The meeting closed with prayer at 11:45 a.m. A noon mass was celebrated by the Rev. Michael G. Mertens of Holy Family Church.
A delicious dinner was served at 1 p.m. followed by a short program and social hour at the West Side Hall. Sheboygan accordionist Johanna Zore kept the crowd dancing and singing to our good old Slovenian melodies.
At 3:30 we boarded our buses for good old Milwaukee, West Allis and Sheboygan.
Lastly, I would like to thank Br. 102 of Willard for accepting the State Convention this year - to all the members attending and for their kind hospitality shown to us.

ebrating their golden wedding anniversary. They celebrated their important day with Mass, and later received guests and friends at their home. Many of our members attending the meeting that day stopped at their home to wish them good luck also in the future. Mary is well-remembered in our branch as one member who came to our aid to sew our first drill team uniforms. Her good will and friendship at a time when needed will not be forgotten!
Our congratulations also to Bertha Hofer, daughter of president Emma Planinšek, who was chosen to serve as trustee for the Shorewood Village. Bertha Hofer has also served on special sanitation committee, the park committee, a special committee for the development of a municipal building and has been employed in the village office. Mrs. Hofer is also a chairman of the park committee. So, good luck, Bertha.
Congratulations also to Dianne Kal-cic who is employed in the rectory of St. Mary’s Nativity as a secretary, has been a model for a style show, for the chamber of Commerce for Business professional Club—and Business professional woman's Club. Her Mother, Frances Kalcic and sister Marie are our members for a number of years as weir as her aunt Mayme Atland.
Our congratulations to our editor Corinne and her husband, Lud Leskovar for the fine program held at St. Stephens hall Oct. 28 with the group Hencek from Ljubljana preforming. They showed and brought us Slovenia—in person. We are thankful to Corinne and Lud for inviting such a performance for our entertainment.

Frances Grahek was named president of the Ely Dawn Club at the October meeting to replace Angela Kosir, who has resigned for health reasons.
In observance of Halloween, members attended in costumes and prizes for best costumes were awarded. Plans for the December Christmas dinner meeting were discussed.

Just heard that one of our members, Marie Pyska from Chicago had
daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Primozich and is a graduate for Mesabi State Jr. College and St. Cloud State College. She is a teacher in the Little Falls, Minn, school system. The groom is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Lyden Rien of Minneapolis and is a graduate of St. Cloud State College.
Their wedding was officated by Fr. Frank Perkovich at Resurrection Church here in Eveleth. Our very best to the newlyweds.

Penna members met in Pittsburgh Notes on the State Convention
The Pennsylvania State Day was a grand success. On Oct. 8th, we celebrated this big Zveza holiday with members of all our Pennsylvania branches meeting under the auspices of Br. 26, Pittsburgh. There was a big crowd and the meeting was held at 2 p.m. presided by yours truly. Our special guest was Antonia Turek, National President of Cleveland. She spoke very nicely and gave us some good ideas for the betterment of our branches.
At 3:30 p.m. we attended the beautifuil banquet which was again very well attended. The invocation was given by Fr. Demshar after which Mrs. Anna Trontel, the pres, of Br. 26, welcomed all guests. She was also selected as the Penna, N.Y. State President Candidate for the next term —our congratulations. There were a number of speakers and Mr. Frank Lokar was the toastmaster. We thank Mr. & Mrs. Frank Turek for being with us.
Sincere gratitude goes to Mrs. Mary Skerlong for her fine words on the radio that helped publicize the event’ also to Mr. Joe BiiMek. I was very proud of my two grandsons who played on their accordions, Frank and Derril. I hope everyone enjoyed the program.

On Sunday, Oct. 8, 1972, 136 delegates from the various branches in Pennsylvania came to Pittsburgh. They came from Bessemer, Strabane, Meadowlands, Pittsburgh, Universal, Center, Renton, Millvale and from the North-side.
Mrs. Antonia Turek was the guest speaker and told us that 748 members and 138 juniors are in Pennsylvania. ShiO encouraged us to get more new members and that the member who gets the most will be honored at the Convention next May. She also told us that the Dawn Choral Group was organized in Cleveland which presented two concerts already and was planning their third on Nov. 26.
Due to the death of her son, Mrs. Mary Tomsic of Strabane resigned as State President. She was elected vice-president at the Convention in Indianapolis in 1946 and has served faithfully for 26 years. She promises to help our new State President, Mrs. Anna Trontel, as much as she can. We wish that Mrs. Tomsic will be able to enjoy a great many more years helping and we wish Mrs. Trontel a lot of good health, an abundance of energy, and to both of them we express fondest regards for their welfare. Da, račka na vodi, tako naj bo se lepo!
And do you remember ‘Polka Dot’, Mrs. Mary Snezic, from the convention in Milwaukee? She came down from Bessemer in a bus with 39 of her sister members. Were we glad to see them! Mary has been president for the past 40 years. Congratulations, Polka Dot!
Father Ferdinand Demshar expressed his liking for the concern he saw expressed by ladies on the bus for older people, other people. It was a heartwarming message, Father, thank you.
Mr. Frank Lokar from the KSKJ supreme board always tells us a story or two. One was that a trapper from northern Canada could only come south to confession once in two years, traveling by foot, by canoe, horseback and train for many days. He was asked why he did not fly down. "Well, Father,” he replied, "for my venial sins it is too expensive; for my mortail sins it is too risky.”
We are looking forward to the Convention next May and to the State Convention up in Bessemer next year. Z veseljem.

On Oct. 1st, it was a big day for our Br. 24, S.W.U. as we were hostesses for the lllinois-lndiana State Convention. It was nice to see so many of our hard working delegates and officers from Chicago, So. Chicago, Indiana and Joliet. And, it was a special pleasure to have our former Supreme President, Josephine Livek with a group from Oglesby.
My heartfelt thanks to you all for such a wonderful attendance. After
Mass, dinner was served and the convention was opened by our State President, Ann Lustig. She did a terrific job. Some good recommendati o n s were heard from the delegates and hope that they will be carried on to our convention in May in Chicago. Hope and pray for success to benefit our membership.
This organization to me is a symbol of pride, —pride in our Slovenian heritage. Yes, we still have some of it here in LaSalle. All that attended our Mass heard of it from our pastor, Father Michael Železnikar and from the singing by St. Roch’s wonderful choir. We have some beautiful voices in that group. It’s too bad we can’t hear more of them.
As an old member of Br. 24, I am taking it upon myself to thank our committee on behalf of the members. We thank our secretary, Mary Krogul-
ski and her family, including her daughter, Paula and husband, Stanley Ulman and also Mary’s son and daughter-in-law. Also, our thanks to Emma Shimkus and her daughter, Wa-nita Helmer. They all worked so hard making arrangements and getting the hall ready and then, cleaning up afterwards. Anyone who has undertaken anything like it knows what a big job it is.
I am sorry that I was not able to help and to be active as much as I would have like to. I wish to appeal to our younger members to come and help and to take over where your mother's left off and worked so hard for.
So, dear members, help your officers and come to the meetings and bring your friends. Thank you all. May God bless you.

CHICAGO COMMUNITY HONORS LOUIS ZEFRAN. SR. AT SLOVENIAN DAY
One of the best known Chicago Slovenians is Louis Zefran Sr., for many years in business in the St. Stephen’s parish and Heart of Chicago community. On the occasion of the annual Slovenian Day celebration Oct. 28th, the Slovenian American Radio Club presented him with their Slovenian Award, citing his services to his community in fraternal, civic and humanitarian endeavors.
"Zef” as he is known by many, was escorted to the stage of the overflowing St. Stephen’s Halls to receive his award to the sounds of great applause. The crowd of 1,200 responded to the meaning of this moment and accorded him all their attention. His family was happy to join their dad in this happy moment. Guest performers, the Henček Ensemble of Slovenia rendered a special Slovenian folksong in his honor and red carnations were pinned on all the family.
On the photo we see, from left, Corinne Leskovar of the Slovenian Radio Hour, Frank Schonta and Fred Orehek who made the presentation on behalf of the S.A.R.C., Lud Leskovar, chairman of Slovenian Day program, Louis Zefran, Sr., wife Liz, son Ron, daughter Marilyn and daughter-in-law, Frances.
The Zefran family has been active in societies of Chicago for many years. Granddad Zefran was at one time a Supreme Officer of KSKJ. Mrs. Elizabeth Zefran is the National Treasurer of Slovenian Women’s Union and treas. of Br. 2, besides serving as Nat’l Sports Director. Son Ron is a Supreme Officer of the S.D.S. and spends much of his time organizing the boys of the community in sports programs. All in all, the Zefran family is and has always been on call and on hand whenever need has arisen in any Slovenian family of Chicago. It is a weM-deserved honor for Lou Zefran!
Highlights of the Slovenian Day Festival included the presentation of a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol by Congressman Roman Pucinski and remarks by Dr. Bogdan Novak, professor at the University of Toledo, Ohio on the historic meaning of Slovenian Day. A surprise guest was Tony Petkovšek, who has a radio program over WXEN in Cleveland and brings news of the Slovenian world at large to his daily audience. On the program, The Henček Ensemble of Slovenia thrilled the audience with singing and music of the kind best known and loved by Slovenians —happy folksongs. At this event the Leskovars also celebrated the 22nd anniversary of the Slovenian Radio Program in Chicago and were the recipients of many good wishes.
This annual festival has brought together Slovenians from all over the state and from all settlements in and around Chicago. The area was extended somewhat this year by the visit of a full bus load of Milwaukeeans headed by Mrs. Mary Kiel with Mrs. Rose Kraemer, State Pres, of S.W.U. in Wisconsin and many members along; also Mmes. Erjavec and Planinšek of Br. 20 and their families headed a large group from Joliet, III. and with us wene Mrs. Anne Kompare National Auditor of S.W.U. and her family of So. Chicago, III. National Secretary, Fanika Humar, directed the singing of the Slovenian and American anthemns by the school children of St. Stephens. Officers and members of Br. 2, Chicago also attended in goodly number.
Many look forward to this day each year and it gives them pride and satisfaction knowing that it’s really a semiofficial national holiday for Slovenians!

SUCCESSFUL REPORT ON OHIO-MICH. STATE DAY
On the day of our Ohio-Michigan State Convention, it was indeed a delightful day to see so many smiling faces and much concern about our organization.
The meeting was opened by prayer and Minutes of the 1971 Convention were read by Marie Beck in Slovenian language. Marie was selected to continue as rec. secretary of this meeting. She is a lovely person and lovely partner to work with.
The meeting was interesting and all were happy to have Corinne Leskovar, Editor of Zarja, with us. She gave us some highlights of the coming National' Convention in May, 1973, as well as an interesting talk on Zarja and Zveza doings around the U.S.
We were happy to have with us from Detroit, members of Br. 105, led by their president, Pauline Adamic. They were: Audrey Krulic, Angie Jenkins, Ann Karun and Jennie Bole. We appreciate the time and effort they had to make this trip to Cleveland. I hope Br. 105 will invite us to their doings some day.
With us also were 3 members of Br. 2, Chicago, and we were delighted and surprised to see them. They were Annie Zorko, Alvie Jerin and Stella Longosz.
A large group came later frcm Pittsburgh and attended the dinner-dance. They were such a jolly group, bless their hearts for coming .We are grateful to Mrs. Mary Tomšič, State Pres. Mrs. Anna Trontel, pres, of Br. 26, and all the officers, members and families in the Pittsburgh group.
Members attended the meeting from Barberton, Lorain and all the branches of Cleveland area. The meeting was interesting and important with the discussion of so many diverse opinions. Besides all else, having such a nice crowd helps the morale.

For our meeting in October, the attendance was very good. At this meeting, the financial report of the banquet was read and all the members were satisfied. The committee and I want to thank all members and their friends who attended the banquet on Oct. 8th and also to all the branches who were represented. We also had a discussion concerning the State Convention that was held in Cleveland Oct. 29th. Our branches planned to have a charter bus going to Cleveland for the Banquet that day.
At the meeting in December we will have a Christmas party as usual, only the exchange of gifts will be for $2 instead of the $1 as in previous years. No meetings in Jan. and Feb. on account of the cold weather.
Congratulations to Mrs. Anna Trontel who was nominated to be State President for Penna. N.Y., in the future term. I am sure she will do a good job.

We especially remembered our departed National Officers, Albina Novak, Josephine Železnikar and former Supreme Auditor, Frances Globokar who died in October. The Honor Guards were present for this ceremony, namely, Mary Sušnik, Mary Chesnik, Josephine Trunk from Br. 50, Antonia Skvarča, Ann Tekavec and Anna Chinchar from Br. 32.
Letters of congratulations and greetings to the Convention were read and we send our thanks to you all. These messages were very much appreciated from Mrs. Marie Prisland, our founder, also Mrs. Marie Floryan, Vice-President, Mrs. Anna Lustig, State Pres, of III.-Ind., Mrs. Rose Kraemer, State Pres, of Wise., Mrs. Anna Pachak, State Pres, of Colo.-Kans.-Mo. and Mrs Mary Tomsic, State Pres, of Penna.-N.Y. These words from our sister officers gave us a lift and we hope with the help of God, we can do our very best to make everyone happy.
My hearty thanks to all the nice people who helped and wished us the best. Especially do I wish to thank Frances Seitz for being so GREAT and helping me where I needed help. I hope I can reciprocate some day.
The meeting ended with Slovenian prayers led by Corinne and Mrs. Mary Otoničar led the holy hymn we al love to sing, Angelsko češčenje. This concluded the meeting.

Wedding Bells to Connie! Mr. & Mrs. Frank Kovačevič announce the wedding of their daughter, Connie to Kenneth J. Smith on Nov. 18th. Their wedding was at St. Byzantine Church. As this will be the last meeting this year on Dec. 20th, let us not forget that it’s also our annual Christmas meeting, important, with election of officers and Christmas party and birthdays combined. The Cleveland Combined Branches of S.W.U. are proud and happy with the success of the Recognition Dinner Dance of Oct. 29th. The dinner was opened with the blessing offered by Fr. Bosner of St. Vitus church. We are grateful to him for attending the function as our guest. After the delicious dinner was served by smiling waitresses, a very pleasant musical program was enjoyed. The first to perform were the Dawn Choral Group singers under the direction of Frank Gorensek. They opened with the National Anthemn and then presented three Slovenian folksongs sung beautifully. A duet by Tillie Spehar and Mimi Režonja was also very delightful. They donned their Slovenian costumes and were accompanied at the piano by Metka Gorensek who also accompanied the Dawn Singers. The concluding musical act was a duet by Eileen Ivancic and Gary Jakatich accompanied by accordionist Dan Kotnik. They were wonderful. Gary who has a beautiful baritone voice, is a grandson of Mary Stusek, pres, of Br. 49.
The presentation of our honored guest, Corinne Leskovar, was also very nice. These were my words at the time:
At the Combined Branches meeting, members wished to have an S.W.U. Recognition Day and since youth is now playing an important rale in all phases of life, it was the decision of the group that we choose a young member to remind everyone that young people are needed to keep our S.W.U. heritage alive and healthy. At this time we wish to honor one who was born in Cleveland but who now resides in Chicago. She was the first mascot of the first mascot of the first S.W.U. Drill Team, “Marie Prisl-and Cadets". She was the secretary of Branch 50 and a delegate to the Detroit convention in 1952 when she was selected to serve as editor of the monthly publication ZARJA-THE DAWN. By virtue of her position, she has worked in very close harmony with each branch and officers year after year, assisting them and cooperating with them and through this cooperation and assistance, has been instrumental in helping us keep the S.W.U. in full bloom.
Corinne was then presented and she was escorted by an honor guard, Antonia Skvarča. National President, Antonia Turek then presented her with an engraved plaque as our token of love and affection. We remembered her dear mother, Albina Novak, and think Corinne is a fine successor to her mother.

I want to thank each and everyone who helped to do the many things necessary to make the day complete. The husbands of our members worked hard, namely Joe Bajec, husband of Vera, Al Comensek, husband of Josephine and Mickey Dancu,'II who was in charge of the bar, husband of Stella. Help of this kind is something we should never forget.
A big thank you to the committee of the Combined Branches Officers: Antonia Turek, Nat’l President, Ann Hočevar, recording secretary, Sophie Magayna, sec'y, Frances Novak, treas, and auditors, Stella Danoull and Anna Godilar. They are all sweet and easy to work with. My hearty thanks to another person who was such a big help, that is, Vicki Faletič and to Jennie Feme of Br. 25 and Jennie Gerk of Br. 47. I want to thank all the branches for their cooperation, it wouldn't have been possible. Again, thanks to all.

Helping me with the presentation for our award winner, Corinne Leskovar, was Fran Seitz, a very able who knows her all her life and was able to give me a lot of pointers. I am very grateful to Fran and may God bless her with good health and happiness.
Another goodhearted person who just pitched in and war. a good help is Jane Novak. A big thank you, Jane. I consider myself lucky to have had the help of Josephine Stwan, Jennie Pugelj and Frances Novak with the “do-re-mee” - all important jobs. Another member did a nice job making a very pretty sign for display at the entrance of the hall; she is Carole Traven. A big thanks to her. So, you see, it took a lot of workers and we all worked happily together. From the bottom of my heart, I am grateful.
Two ladies were recipients of special honors that day, ;n the form of flower corsages and gifts. Mrs. Mary Otoničar was recognized as our longest working officer, as former National Auditor and secretary of Br. 25 since the beginning and Mrs. Dorothy Sternisha, her right hand who also celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary just the day before. They were given a big round of applause.
It’s all over now, but the memory lingers on and with my thanks, my hopes that we will always work so well and for the betterment and progress of S.W.U. MARY BOSTIAN

THE SLOVENIAN WOMEN’S UNION has financially assisted graduating high	school students	since 1949	through its scholarship	program. At
the beginning two scholarships were	granted, this year five	scholarships
were awarded — $250.00 for the highest academic record and four at $200.00 each. To date 66 students have benefited in the amount of $13,000.00.
To	achieve this we	are grateful	to all the contributors who donated

Silently, silently, the white snow covers all with its soft cloak - every little house, every shack is like a palace hewn out of alabaster, every path, an avenua in some enchanted land.
The pale lights from the lamps, reflected from the fluttering snowflakes, glistens as a thousand shimmering Bethlehem stars.
The hurrying and scurrying city has quieted, and the streets are empty and deserted. All is hushed. The sinfuil world again, prayerfully awaits the sacred hour of Christ’s birth.
In the small house is love, which warms the hearts as fine in the hearth warms and disperses winter’s cold. In front of the decorated tree stands the crib, where Mary again rocks the Infant, and heavenly angels are singing. Around are the little ones who can hardly wait to see what Santa will bring. Their eyes are glowing like candles, their young voices singing 'like the happy Christmas bells:

In spite of snowflurries in the air and a crisp, cold evening, seventeen members of Branch 34 were in attendance at the October meeting with Mrs. John Pahuila presiding.
After routine business was conducted, and reports given, a social hour followed. Prizewinners were Mmes. Joseph Mesojedec, Joseph Stefanich, William Voilendorf and Joseph J'amnick.
The evening of fellowship concluded with refreshments, served by the hostesses Mrs. Frank Planton Sr. and Mrs. John Zavodnik Sr. at a table decorated in a Halloween motif.
Named on the hostess Committee for November 15, were Mrs. Frederick Myre and Mrs. Anthony F. Yapel and Mrs. John Pa hula will furnish the attendance prize. Winning the October attendance prize was Mrs. Mary Pahula, which was furnisihed by Mrs. Frank Planton.
As I write, most of our colorful leaves have fallen off the trees—to the delight of the partridge hunters, and our temperatures have dropped as low as 18 degrees. The 3 inches of snow that fell last weekend, has disappeared and when the sun is shining, one feels as if fall is here to stay—we all hope winter weather holds off a bit longer. Snowmobile enthusiasts feel differently—their great sport depends on a thick cover of snow.
Greetings to all SWU members— with wishes for good health and happiness. Every member—try to get a new member— in the ourrent “WOMAN OF THE YEAR” membership campaign—heed our Editor’s (CORIN-NE LESKOVAR) advice—tell a prospective member “If you join, you will have many friends—a good time at each meeting—insurance (for a very small fee, depending on the type you choose) and as an added BONUS the monthy arrival of our wonderful DAWN Magazine—to keep in touch with all the Branches and officers—and always good recipes to try out on your family".

The meeting of Oct. 4th was very nice. We had a wonderful time and discussed the membership campaign and everyone promised to help enroll some new members. Dec. 6th will be our annual dinner and it will be a turkey dinner with games and lots of fun for all. We will sing our favorite Christ-

mas songs too. So, please come to this nice event. The business of the evening is very important, that we get a good group of workers for the new year. After our Oct. meeting we enjoyed playing cards and lunch.
Just a note on my trip to Slovenia last summer. In May I left home and stopped in Chicago to visit my daughter, Ruth. While there I also visited the Home Office of S.W.U. and met the new secretary, Fanika Humar. We had a nice talk also with editor, Corin-ne Leskovar and a member, Ancka Ahacic. who stopped in. Later, Mrs, Humar drove me to my daughter, Ruth's end to the Croatian Press where Zarja is printed. It was very interesting.
My daughter, Ruth is a Registered Nurse and teaches at the University of Chicago Hospital. She lives in Chicago and thanks to Mrs. Humar is now a member of Zveza, belonging to Br. 2.
My trip overseas was very pleasant. We left Cleveland May 28th aboard the Inex Adrija airplane in the company of many happy people and musicians who played their accordions all night. The next morning we came to Ljubljana, the Brnik airport. What happiness and joy! There were hugs and tears as relatives met relatives. After a short time we left for the city and the sight of the beautiful castle that overlooks the Slovenian capital city, made my heart jump.
I	spent four months in Slovenia also visiting Italy, Germany and Austria. A never-to-be-forgotten day is the American picnic on July 4th where all the tourists gather with their families and friends. It was held at Škofja Loka and the crowd was estimated at 4,000 Americans and 12,000 natives. We ate a whole roasted steer. That was a lot of sandwiches! From ail over Slovenia the orchestras came and played their most popular songs. From Cleveland also came the Vadnal Orchestra and I think all of Škofja Loka was shaking with the applause for these musicians. The dance lasted until 3 in the morning.
With a heavy heart I bade farewell to my dear ones and on Sept. 7th again headed for home. Across the ocean we flew safely and comfortably and soon came to Cleveland. Again I traveled to Chicago and finally came nome to my husband, Joe. It was a most happy reunion.
I	read with pleasure the report by Anna Godler of Cleveland who wrote of her Slovenian trip last month. I followed almost the same path as she, all over Slovenia. And, she had as good a time as I did, it seems!
Now we are at home back in the routine of things and we hope the winter will not be too severe and that
You will be reading of the activities and social events that have been going on this fall among the branches of our Union. We not only have vital and active branches, it does seem we have more interested members and people working who are energetic and progressive-mi n ded. With all these events the S.W.U. benefits and so the future looks very good.
On Oct. 1st, the members of Illinois and Indiana branches met at La Salle, III. a small community of 10,000 persons, a clean, neat and bright little town. The mayor is rightly proud of his citizenry. The Slovenian people comprise quite a big portion of it, altho inter-marriage with other nationalities has now diluted the Slovenian community a bit. They still are loyal, more than ever, to their dear St. Roch's church and their pastor, Fr. Michael Železnikar who guides them, teaches them, inspires them in religious as well as moral and practical matters and is an all around father to all. Fr. Mike responded to our invitation to the State Convention as he does to all things good for his parishioners, with full enthusiasm.

The groups that came from all over Illinois included a busload from Br. 20, Joliet and many cars from near and far. Officers of Br. 24 are to be complimented for the arrangements that gave us such a good day together.
The meeting itself was interesting from the standpoint of reports from the branches. Everyone is doing well and has plans for future improvements. We left LaSalle promising to see one another again in full 100% numbers at the National Convention in Chicago.

That was the beginning of October and at the end of the month, it was off to Cleveland for the Ohio-Michi-gan State Day proceedings. The 4,000 members of the Cleveland area are one of the largest and most important groups in our Union. In Cleveland, the second largest Slovenian community in the world, S.W.U., has always had great activity and vitality. To be invited at their first Recognition Dinner was indeed an honor. The entire arrangement was made to make all of us feel as sisters, warm and friendly to one another. I hope this spirit continues and grows in Ohio as all over the jurisdiction of the organization.
To be so honored was somewhat surprising. Perhaps so as the 20 year anniversary is in itself surprising to me. I find it hard to believe but am proud to have had these years doing a job I love and working with people whom I have known all my lifetime.
Many of my old friends were there at the beautiful Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Ave. Many relatives, too. They didn't let me forget that Cleveland was my home town and what a nice feeling it was.
I	appreciate the engraved plaque that was presented to me on behalf of the branches of S.W.U. in Ohio and Michigan and will treasure it. I also will always remember and treasure the sincere words of friendship that were offered and the smiling faces that went with them. The largest group of members were naturally from the Cleveland area, but neighboring towns near Cleveland were represented too, and a whole bus came from Ohio's best neighbor, Pennsylvania! But the biggest surprise were the three Chicago members who come to Cleveland and were on hand for the meeting and dinner.
It was delightful. I hope it was meaningful. It will be memorable a long time to come. Thank you.
At this time I wish to thank Mary Bostian, State President of Ohio-Mich. for her conscientious leadership and the great work she is doing to keep activities on the increase and progress assured for our branches there. To the Combined Branches, my thanks for the honor afforded me and to Toni Turek, National President who made the presentation of the Recognition Award, my sincere gratitude for her kind words.

More and more of our members are attending the meetings and more business us being accomplished. Bus reservations were completed and 39 members signed up to go to Willard for the State Convention. Also, card party details were discussed and the president assigned chairladies for each event. Two new members were initiated and welcomed into our branch, namely, Helen and Donna Prijic. The meet-
ing closed and a social birthday celebration was held. The hostesses for the evening were Mitz Mohorko and Rita Pipia who donated a Mirro Coffee Percolator to our branch. The ga'ls served 3 different kinds of cakes, two donated by Mitz and Rita and a birthday cake by Jean Luzar and coffee also was donated by them. The officers and members thank these three members for their kind generosity.
The October birthday celebrants weren’t forgotten in last month’s issue. I had a lengthy report, so belated birthday greetings now to Ella Udo-vich, Rose Zuponcic, Cecelia Puska-rich, Yvonne Johnstone, Mary Pugel, Mary Stearle, Jean Luzar and Margaret Peters.
The November birthdays were Mary Beley who is 91 years old and the oldest member of our branch, also Mary Kresse, Angeline Johnstone, Theresa Kotar, Elizabeth Dolensek, Mitz Mohorko, Marie Miller, Agnes Podriz-nik, Kathleen Henke'l, Janet Bentz, Frances Lawler, Jenny Pugel, Cecelia Dvornik, Mary Pucel and Rose Karvick. Our vacationists, Jeanette Shmanz and her husband spent two weeks in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Hope you best the one-arm bandits.
Mary Musich, went to visit her sis-
ter and brother-in-law, the “Glavans’’ in Spring Hill, Fla. Don and Ann Hiller are both retired and are always on the go! They visit one daughter in Minnesota and then in a few weels, the other daughter in Michigan. Sharon Stein and her girl friend traveled the New England States for one month. Sharon called her mom and told her she was glad she took along her winter olothes as they sure came in handy.
Mrs. & Mrs. Wenzel Dvornik of Clearwater, Fla. are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. At present they are in Hawaii and will soon be back in Milwaukee to visit their two sons and families and friends. Mr. & Mrs. Dvornik were residents of Milwaukee before their retirement.
On Sat., Sept., 16th, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Marinkovich were surprised by a 25th Anniversary party given by their two sons, Robert and Mike and their daughter, Sandy Ambrosh. It was held at Rebernisek's Club 36 and 100 relatives and friends attended. A buffet dinner was served and Eddie Gallun’s famous band entertained. The gift of money will be for their trip to Hawaii this month.
To the above two couples, hope your anniversaries are happy and throughout the future too, may you find that each tomorrow brings more happiness to all of you.

WILL BARAGA'S SAINTHOOD FINALLY COME TO BEING?
It is clear that procedure previous to the canonization of a saint is complicated and lengihy. It seems so for all of us who have waited for the canonization of our Slovenian - American missionary Bishop. Frederic Baraga, the Apostle of the Indians.
Now we heai that the canonization process is nearing its end and it is indeed heartwarming and gratifying. Soon Bishop Baraga, the noble ^ and loving Slovenian lad who became a priest, toiled in the vineyard of >< X the Lord in his native Slovenia, then in 1832 came to be a missionary among the savage Indians of the Upper Michigan Penninsula and Min- £ nesota, will be take his rightful place in the Catholic church.
There is only one other American to have reached this, the highest ^ honor the church can give a mortal man and she is Mother Francis Xavier Cabrini of Chicago. Named to be Blessed are three Americans, Mother Elizabeth Seton of New York, Bishop John Newmann of Philadelphia and Sister Rose Philine Duchesne, founder of the American branch $ of the Sacred Heart Society.
As we know, Bishop Baraga never forgot his Slovenian heritage and the education and traditions that made him what he was. His love for humanity was a virtue taught to him by his parents, especially his mother, to whom he was devoted. While a missionary in America, his sister came to help him and aid him in his selfless endeavors.
The work of the primary council is over and now it remains only the approval of the His Holiness Paul VI to allow the Canonization Process to begin.
We pray for Bishop Baraga's canonization - we pray for him as a saintly compatriot and one close to God. May the world soon know of him and honor him as we do.	EDITOR
(NOTE.—Bishop Baraga has earned a place not only in the hearts at the Slovenian-Americans who erected the beautiful Slovenian Chapel at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. where he is shown in a relief by master sculptor Franc Gorse but also in the main church of the Shrine where he is among the twelve American Bishops in individual stain glass windows. There he is remembered as the first Bishop of Marquette Diocese.)
Joyce Zaweshink had surgery and was confined to West Allis Memorial Hospital. I understand she is coming along quite well. Rose Luba also had surgery and is now at home. Hope Joyce and Rose have a speedy recovery as we miss both you at the meetings.

As guest of honor at our Combined Branches Dinner-Dance she was deserving of this high distinction. Her mother Albina Novak organized our branch. Thank you Corinne for all your efforts in this most vital and communicative publication which continues and manifests to hold members coherent and loyal to S.W.U.
Dear members a Christmas Party is planned on Sun. Dec. 17th at 1:30 p.m. at the well known Celebrity Room in Eastgate Plaza. Please plan to come on this date and guests are welcome. Door prizes, games and entertainment are planned. The Smorgasbord dinner is $4.25 per person. Instead of an exchange of gifts it was decided to donate equally to the Slovenian Home for the Aged and to the Cancer Fund, both worthy causes. So let us make it a happy occasion by getting together in a large number.

Terry Erwin and husband now reside in Philadelphia and were recently visited by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Novak (Jane). Darlene Strancar and husband live in Detroit and their guests included her mother Mary Vukčevič, Jane, Pat and Betty Novak. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meshaga (Christina) now live in Sun City, Arizona. Sorry to see all these fine members live so far away. Best wishes in your new environments.
After six and one-half years we were all very happy to have our son David come home from Viet Nam. He was Installation Manager with Pacific Architects and Engineers, Inc. He is
presently in the construction business in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tom Tome (Beatrice and Martin’s son) again was successful in selling his collages (depicting automobiles) to Blue Shield and Blue Cross Magazines for their employees; and to Kay Ballard who bought two collages and gave them as gifts to Dinah Shore and to Carol Burnett. He and his wife live in Chicago with their four year old twin sons who are our junior members. Tom’s antique shop is called "Fly by Night” near Merchandise Mart. Father Victor Tome from St. Mary’s Parish is his unole.
Besides being “Potica Queen” Jean Tomsic shines in another talent that of flower arrangements some of which were recently exhibited at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine’s Rosary Fall Festival Bazaar.
We had a mystery bus ride on Fri. Oct. 27th planned by our Pres. The destination was the Am. Slovene Club at Fairport Harbor. Mary Champa with her accordion accompanied a song fest on the bus. There was also a guessing game and two fine members received prizes for their original answers. A very delicious home-style dinner was prepared. To the tune of two accordions one of which Jean Paik played and joined Mary Champa more singing and danoing was enjoined and also “Venček na glavi” and “Sinoči je pela” were played and sung to Jean Pierman as a bride in a mock wedding. She was truJy hilariously entertaining and we were all delighted with her apropos. It all ended too soon and we sang all the way home.

It seems we had the smallest attendance at our October meeting that we’ve had in a long time. Many of our members are sick and we wish them all the best, namely, sisters Frances Jekovich and Ann Nelmark who underwent surgery; also Josephine Oswald’s husband Karl, all patients at Hibbing General. We are praying for your recoveries.
The meeting was short and president Jos. Oswald led the prayer. The social aspects of the evening included a delicious lunch and games. Hostesses were sisters Frances Rapovich, Mary Techar, Florence Techar and Shirley Spinelli. The following won prizes: Julia Mancuso, Angeline Russ, Genevieve Zidarich, Dorothy Russ, Mildred Barbatto, Josephine Polit a n o,

It just doesn’t seem possible that Christmas is around the corner. At the Nov. meeting, talk was centered on the great Christmas party that will be held this year at the Androy Hotel. There will be exchange of dollar gifts and a big election of officers and Mother of the Year plus other important topics in regard to changes of by- laws, etc. So, please try to make the Christmas meeting on the first Wed. of December. We will be looking forward to seeing you then.
There were Thank You Cards from sick members and this is the time we all offer a little prayer for them. We miss seeing you and hope you will be able to return to our midst.
The social of the evening took place with card games enjoyed by all. Honors went to sisters Jennie Crea, Alice Baratto, Gertrude Kochevar, and Rose Trombly in Smear, Bridge honors to Rose Chiodi, Josephine Politano and in “B” to Pauline Germe and Angeline Russ. Door prize went to Frances Jerkovich. Hostesses were Genevieve Zidarich, Mildred Barbatto, Carmella Bonazza and Laura Mancuso. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and a delightful evening.

We have lost our beloved member of long standing, Mary Riffle. She was 85 years old. She leaves a large family and many grandchildren. She was buried from St. James parish church and at her bier, our president, Rose Racher, gave our final farewell. To her family we aU’extend our prayers and sympathy.
Wet well wishes to Elsie Shine who is convalescing from major surgery and to Mrs. Anna Glavan who had a heart attack and is also now at home.
Our sympathy to member Mayme Sporich whose brother died in Florida and to Anna Savor whose well-known aunt, Mrs. Kren from Girard passed away last month.

Another summer is gone and fall fraternal activities are once more off to a good start. Matilda Cigolle spent her vacation in Jugoslavia having a happy meeting with her sister. She also met many other relatives for the first time. I, too, with my sister Stephanie Polutnik spent three joyful weeks in Slovenia. Having been born there and leaving Vrhnika as a child of ten, I always longed for one more look. We visited our aunts Ivana Kuns-tel, Ančka Jelovšek and Mary Jelovšek plus numerous cousins in Zaplana and Logatec. We walked the lanes and climbed the hills, and marveled how we, as children, ever managed some of the trecherous feats of rock climbing. We walked through Močilnik and saw Izvir Ljubljanice and Verd.
Progress has come to Vrhnika and things have changed, but foremost in my mind were those old Slovenian folk songs “Kje so tiste Stezice, ki so včasih bile" and “Vse mine”. We also saw all the wonders and beauty of Slovenia, Bled, Bohinj, Postojna and much more. Slovenia certainly is a land of beauty, but I’m happy to be a citizen of good old U.S.A. with its own wealth and beauty.
Our branch held its October meeting at the home of Mary Kristin. Mary had as co-hostess her sister Sophie Cekuta. Attendance at the meeting was very good. We formulated final plans for our card party. After the meeting Sophie and Mary served all present a delicious lunch. Thank you gals for your hospitality.
The card party which was heJd in the Slovenian Home was very suc-cesful. Our chairman, Mary Macek was unable to attend due to other commitments but the rest of the committee did an admirable job. Ms. Kristin, Svesko, Kren in kitchen Ms. Cekuta, Dombroski with tickets, Nettie and Rose J'uvancic all around help and card tables Mary Selak and yours truly, games. Til I ie Cigolle did an admirable job introducing the politicians who came to charm the ladies and solicit votes. Thank You! one and all for a job well done.
For Christmas we plan a dinner with gift exchange. At the December meeting we usually select our mother of the year—who will it be this year? Come and help us select her.
The Kren family lost their beloved Mother Anna. Our deepest sympathy to the Kren family and may her soul rest in peace.
Frances Juvančič was a patient at the Cleveland Clinic. We wish her and all the other members a speedy recovery. God Bless You All.

Mrs. Rose Roesch, sunshine chairman of branch No. 50, thoughtfully sent this delicious recipe, PINEAPPLE BANANA DREAM CAKE. It was prepared and brought to one of the meetings by Mrs. Betty Serneil, also of branch No. 50. The members loved it and asked that it be published in this column. It’s super delicious!
PINEAPPLE BANANA DREAM CAKE Crust:
3 packages graham crackers
1 Vž sticks butter, melted
2 tablespoons sugar
Make crackers into crumbs, add melted butter and sugar and mix.
Press into 9 x 13 buttered cake pan.
Filling:
y2 pound oleo, room temperature
2	cups powdered sugar
2	eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Beat for 20 minutes to make light and fluffy.
Add and mix in gently:
4 bananas, sliced thin
2 cans (20 oz. size) crushed pineapple, drained
Blend together and fold into filling:
1 large cool whip
y2 pint whipping cream, whipped
Topping:
Top cake with crushed nuts and maraschio cherries - beautiful for Christmas. Leave in refrigerator until set.
HOLIDAY ROAST DUCKLING
4	servings
5 pound duckling Salt and pepper Lemon juice Celery leaves
1 onion, sliced
iy2 cups dry white wine
1 tablespoon honey (optional)
1,—Wash the duckling thoroughly inside	and out	with	cold water,	dry
it and	sprinkle	with	salt and pepper.
Rub the cavity	with	lemon juice	and
insert	a few celery	leaves and	the
onion. Prick the skin. Place the duckling breast side up on a rack in a
roasting pan and cook in a moderately slow preheated oven (325 F.) for ^ hour.
2.—Drain the fat from the pan, add 1 Yi cups of wine and continue to roast, basting often, until it is tender. Allow about 30 minutes cooking time per pound.
3.—It a very crisp skin is desired, brush the duck with honey 15 minutes before taking it from the oven, and do not baste again. Note: If desired, duckling can be stuffed with bread dressing and orange juice used instead of the wine, with frequent basting. The orange flavor blends well with duck.
Mrs. Ann Podgoršek of Duluth kindly sent me the prize-winning recipes of the annual Duluth News-Tribune Favorite Recipe Contest. I was pleased to fine CHIVE POTICA among the selected recipes.
CHIVE POTICA
1	large cake compressed yeast
1	'/2 cups lukewarm water 7>4 cups flour 1*4 teaspoon salt !4 cup sugar /2 cup melted shortening l'A cups margarine, melted
5	eggs
1	cup fresh chives, cut up or dry chopped chives
1	smalJ cut-up onion
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Add 3 cups of flour gradually. Add salt, sugar and shortening. Add rest of flour and knead dough until stickiness is gone. Let rise until double in bulk. While dough is rising, prepare filling. For filling, melt margarine in pan. When cool, add the 5 eggs, one at a time, beating with fork until mixed. Cut up chives and onions in small pieces. Spread the mixture of shortening and eggs on top of dough that has been put on floured oloth and stretched as thin as possible. Then sprinkle chives and onions on top of dough. Roll up dough as for jelly roll. Let rise again. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes in 9 x 13 inch greased pan.
The grand prize winner of 2,557 recipes from the 1972 Wisconsin State Jornal Cookbook Contest is GOURMET PEAS. You can mix it all ahead in the afternoon and then let them sit until you're ready to use them later. This is a good vegetable when entertaining
GOURMET PEAS
2 tablespoons butter
3 chicken bouillon cubes 11/2 teaspoon marjoram
1 bay leaf
Black pepper and cayenne, to taste
3	stalks celery, cut paper thin
1 bunch green onions with tops, sliced iy2 cup slivered almonds
2 packages (10 ounces each) green peas, thawed
2	tablespoons dry sherry Generous shake monosodium glutamate
Melt butter with bouillon cubes, marjoram and bay leaf. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil. Do not uncover. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes. Stir and serve. 8 servings.

An interesting and pleasant tasting horsd’oeuvre for a cocktail party during the holidays or any other time is BACON DELIGHTS.
BACON DELIGHTS
2	cans waterchestnuts 1 pound bacon Brown sugar.
Cut both bacon strips and water chestnuts in half. Spread one-half strip of bacon with brown sugar and wrap it around a half piece of water chestnut, securing it with a toothpick. Bake one hour at 250 degrees and serve. This recipe may be made ahead of time and reheated under the broiler or in the oven.

Since this was our first fall meeting, our officers and members gave their reports on European trips and other vacations at the Sept. meeting. The trip to Pittsburgh to attend Slovenian Day there was also a fine event and all had a good time.
We came back with the good news that next year we are to plan on having Penna State Day in Bessemer. So, ladies, come to the meeting so we can plan and be ready for the Big Day.
Halloween was over so soon and Thanksgiving, too. For Christmas, our party is planned as usual so please bring your favorite dish and gift exchange.
We wish to congratulate Debbie Sankovich and her husband, they were married Oct. 28th. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Sankovich and granddaughter of Mrs. Frances Samsa who was our secretary for a good many years.

Our branch received a lovely “thank you” letter from the Hattie Larlham Home for the severely handicapped and mentally retarded children, located in Mantua, Ohio, for the aid our branch has given this home with the saving of Betty Crocker coupons as well as the diapers and other articles of bedding our ladies sewed for the children. With the help of other organizations as	well	as ours,	they
have been able to purchase the ambulance which was one of their goals. They informed us that all the coupons they rec e i v e	from	now on	will
be used towards the	installation	of
air conditioning in one section of the home, badly in	need	of same.	We
trust that all the members will continue saving these coupons as all of you have done so favorably in the past. Remember these are the Betty Crocker coupons on box tops of General Mills products, and at times extra coupons are located inside the boxes. Those received in the mail or cut out of newspapers for "various amounts of pennies off” are not acceptable.
Even though our Sophie Maurer —a charter member— has recently moved to Fairport Harbor from Warrensville Hgts., in order to be living closer to her children, she will still continue to be a member of our branch. We all wish you good health and happiness Sophie, and we all shall miss you. We hope that whenever possible, you will be able to attend our meetings or any other social events we hope to have in the future.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yoger (Ann) have left for a six week vacation in California where two of their married daughters and families are living. We know this trip will be an enjoyable reunion.
Good luck, health and happiness to Dorothy Godfrey and family upon their recent move to Spencer, Ohio, located near Wellington, Ohio.
Florence Duale sent a note to the branch informing us how much she and her husband are enjoying their new home in Lehigh Acres, Fla., and will be avidly reading the “Zarja” to keep abreast of the happenings of our branch and its members. She also informed us that other relatives of theirs, are relocating in Florida also.
Good luck, health and happiness to my son Randall and his wife Gail, married in September of 1971, who recently moved to their new home in Maple Heights.

The State Convention in LaSalle on Oct. 1st was really a nice affair. Three buses and many cars full of members from the entire state drove down. Everyone was happy to meet with one another again and say: Hello!
There were 10 members from Oglesby - all officers and myself and it made me think, where are the rest? we are only three miles away from LaSalle, it was a nice Sunday and more could have attended. Think it over, sisters, as in cooperation we attain success!
Always speak well of your branch and you might be surprised that some day you will get new members this way. After all, it is a Catholic ladies organization, one to be proud of! Think it over.
After a delicious dinner, the meeting started. First a telegram was read from our Founder, Mrs. Marie Prisland who sent her congratulations and good wishes for a successful convention. Our National Secretary, Fanika Humar recomended to elect the State President at this convention to which every one agreed. Nominated and selected was our present III. Ind. State President, Mrs. Anna Lustig of Br. 16 Congratulations. After some further discussion, the meeting was closed. Everyone left with smiles and promises to meet again next year.
On Sunday, Nov. 5th. Mr. & Mrs. Rr. Stubler repeated their vows at Mass at Holy Family Church on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their marriage. They are the proud parents of four children and owners of the Royal Lanes Bowling Alleys in Oglesby. Their oldest son, James, in manager of same. Mary is a very busy person who likes to help where it is needed. She is very active in the Lighted Way Association, a home for handicapped children. She is past president of the Parents Club. We, members, sent our congratulations to both. May God bless you all and keep you well for many years ahead.
One of our Junior members, literally, has been flying high lately! He is Robert W. Schmidt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Max Schmidt and my grandson who in June of this year received his private pilot’s license from the Univ. of Illinois Institute of Aviation. Robert, a senior majoring in biology at the Univ. of III. has aspirations of becoming a doctor and thought that by having a pilot's license it would enable
him to have a greater degree of mobility and flexibility that very few doctors enjoy today.
Robert frequently flys home to visit and lands at the local Ottawa airport. It takes him less than an hour to go a distance that ordinarily takes two hours by car. He usually flys at an altitude of between 3,000 and 6,000 ft. Most of the flying he has done has been in a four hundred miles radius of Champaign-Urbana which encompasses Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky. He says “Flying is great!" His parents have flown with him already and he is looking forward to the day that he will give his grandma a ride, too! I am willing! (Mrs. Livek, we hope you will fly high and happily with your grandson some day soon. And best of luck to Robert for an interesting and rewarding life. C.L.)

The main topic of discussion at the October meeting was our Christmas party. Chairlady —Emma Yergovich and her committee— Irene Evans and Virginia Kwiatkowski,reminded the members that final arrangements have
been made to assure the members and friends the fullest enjoyment from the evenings events. All members and guests must arrive at the Sacred Heart School Hall at 96th. and Exchange Ave. not later than 6:30 P.M. December 6th and Margaret Doherty will do the catering. Reserve any number of tickets for the party with Evelyn Driscoll phone 731-5066 she’ll have them ready for you. Reservations are $4 per person. Don’t forget the grab bag gift of $1.00.
We had on our program, Ann Lus-tig who presented “Toys and Gifts” to our audience—this gave our members a chance to do their Christmas shopping early. Ann, as you know, is our State President and because of her splendid cooperation our branch was able to join hands with Br. 16 to attend the State Convention which was held in La Salle.
The results of this convention was discussed and will be presented to the national convention for further comments. Convention wounds must be forgotten, we must be ready as one major force to attain the alms of our branches which are for the good of everyone. Never forget the importance of unity. Without it nothing can be achieved.
I	want to personally express to the members of Br. 24 my appreciation For the warm hospitality extended to our branch and our heartfelt thanks to all of you in La Salle.

nia Kwiatkowski. The bright table decorations with a Halloween theme, the centerpiece with fresh marigolds and pumpkin was so appropriate for the arrival of fall. Goodies were by Rosemary Sudar, Irene Evans, Evelyn Driscoll, Millie James and Phyllis Perko. Many thanks ladies!
Ill health has fallen on some of our members husbands, namely, Mary Nik-sic’s Manda Nosich’s and Jacqueline Natzke’s husbands. Please pray for them. Also get well wishes to Rosemary Sudar who was in So Chicago Hospital and underwent minor surgery. On a more cheery note, we are happy to hear that Mary Perkovich (Musk. Ave.) is recovering nicely from surgery performed on her foot. Ah, well, Mary always did throw herself into things.

THE AMERICAN FLAG FLYS IN SLOVENIA’S CAPITAL
For the first time in history, the flag of the United States is flying in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia.
It flys over the U.S. Information Agency Center, a place where Slovenians can come to find literary, technical and cultural material about America, the Land of the Free, The Center is located right in the main section of tfie city. We have heard that many Slovenians have already availed themselves of the information there, borrowing books, recordings, etc.
There are some 4500 books of all kinds and on all subjects by American authors. The Library is also complete wiCh all the newspapers and journals printed. 1.600 record albums are available there making this the most popular part of the Center. The most valuable, however according to comments of the users, is the technological section giving firsthand information to students who previously had to find books in other languages and translate them.
In the program of the U.S. Information Center will be future lectures by American professors and technicians, and various displays and films.
The opening of the Center took place on Independence Day, July 4ih,
1972.
Officers and delegates to the 1970 National S.W.U. Convention will recall that a Resolution was sent to Pres. Nixon and a favorable re'sly thereafter received that a U.S. Information Agency would be put into operation in Ljubljana - according to new agreements. We now hope for a continuance of this good will by the Swo countries so that a Consular Office might be established there as well. One of the leading advocates of this is the American Slovenian Civic Alliance of Illinois which has now again requested consideration by the newly-elected President, Richard M. Nixon. The A.S.C.A. Exec. Secretary, Ludwig A. Leskovar, the originator of the appeal, began during the administration of President John F. Kennedy to ask for the U.S. Consulate and many letters and appeals have subsequently been sent by the S.W.U. and other organizations. Lei us hope that now when the world family of nations seems closer than at any time in history, a second American flag will fly in Ljubljana, one that means the U.S. and Slovenia have strong and important ties and most important, that Americans in Slovenia will have a direct contact with home. Ladies, our Oct. meeting left much to be desired in attendance. It is always the same old faithfuil faces that present themselves at our gatherings, bless their hearts! I am addressing myself to the members who do not attend our meetings. Come on out and join us in our ventures, adventures and socials. Really and truily, you will enjoy yourselves as we are a friendly group who partake with equal fervor in business as well as pleasure. If for no other reason, come and join us in song with our dear sister Susel who will lead you in the beautiful Slovenian songs.
Now when you do come to our meetings, bring a new member with you and we’ll say, the more the merrier!

ject, let me add the name of Mary Omaitz. Without their help and effort, our rummage sale would have been lacking a great deal in value, monetary and otherwise. A thank you is sent by Jean Kuri-lich to all those who participated in any way in this money-raising venture.
Sister Christine Filips has been seriously ill; had undergone surgery and on the day she was to be released from the hospital, suffered a heart attack. I am pleased to convey now that she is home and feeling much better, thank God for His blessing.
Sister Mary Videgar is also seriously ill and is in the hospital waiting for surgery. Our prayers are offered for a speedy recovery.
Among our other sick members are the names of sisters Smerdu, Evanich, Machn and Reck. We sincerely hope that they will soon walk on the road to recovery.
Our birthday celebrants for the month of Oct. were Frances Bensa, Antoinette Kovach and Frances Kapel. Best wishes to you ailil and many healthy, happy returns. At this time I wish to convey a special birthday message to Mary Reich of Br. 2, Chicago, She’s my Godchild and I’m very pleased to be her Godmother. I am looking for-word to her Calif, visit which is long overdue. Respectfully submitted.

Welcome back one and all. The summer was 'long; the summer was short; but over it is.
Among those returning to our September meeting on a lovely fall day was our former President, Mrs. Kenneth Odorizzi, nee Irene Planinšek. Everyone enjoyed chatting with her and looking at her lovely wedding pictures.
She did not fail to impart some of her usual enthusiasm.
We also learned that Irene was presenting the musical play, "Guys and Dolls” in November and will later be presenting the same performance at the State Department auditorium, which we feel is quite an honor.
Our meetings for September and October found us busily engaged in making plans for our Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, November 11,
1972.
We also spent some time reminiscing about what we had done during the summer months. We are pleased that our staunch and oldest member, Mrs. Matilda Podborsek, with her son, John, was able once again to make the trip to her native Slovenia and Switzerland. She is remarkable!
Delicious and lovely refreshments were served at both our meetings. Our sincere thanks to Mrs. TiMie Terse lie and Mrs. Mary Lou Terselic for September’s feast of assorted goodies. For the delicious pastries and Chocolate Mousse at October’s meeting, we thank Mrs. Matilda Podborsek and Mrs. Ana Cernelc.

Kakor popotnik ob studencu, tako so se ustavile njegove misli na sveti večer. Ko se je razgrnil vonj kadila po hiši, ko je odzvonilo sveii noči, se je zaklenil v sobo, prižgal luč in sedel v naslanjač. Krog njega na mizi knjige, listi in listine.
Sezi, beri, študiraj!
župnikova roka se ni ganila.
Nocoj? Ne! Sveta noč. Tako skrivnostna je, tako tihega pričakovanja polna, da bi jo delo oskrunilo. S svečano grozo je razlito koprnenje po vsej zemlji. Ožarjena po dobravi, po hribih zro pričakovaje v zasneženo pokrajino. Vse te stotere nočne oči čakajo velikega trenutka. Tudi on ga čaka. Tok vsakdanjih skrbi je obstal in onemel.
Župnik je zaklopil oči in sklonil glavo. Njegova duša je zletela nazaj v preteklo življenje truda in dela. Videl je izhojeno pot, koder je hodil. Stopinje njegovega truda so bile globoko vgažene v rodno grudo. Stotine brazd je sprejemalo seme njegovega napora. Srce ni nič občutilo trnov. Ranjeno je bilo — ne enkrat, obrunek ob obrunku. Življenje ga je skovalo v moža. Prepričan je bil, da ga ne poniža ne zloba ne krivica, da mu ne omahne roka ob delu, čeprav je žel uspehov malo, posmehov mnogo.
In vendar se je zgodilo. S širokim zasmehom se je zarežal vanj dvom. Strašen dvom nad vsem, ki se je prelival v obup.
čemu tvoje delo, čemu vsi napori? Ali še nisi spoznal, da tvoj rod leži na tleh, da ga pogazi vsak, ki gre prek polja? Ti ga kličeš, on je gluh, l'i mu lahko ponujaš bisere, on jih meče v blato — to igračo za bogastvo, sužnju na-potje. če gabožaš, ga razjeziš, ker ljubi bič. če mu potisneš, te pogleda grdo, ker ljubi coklo in zavoro, če mu ponudiš na dlani srve, vzame ga kakor lisjak kos jedi, pa jo odnese v gozd, se nasiti in se ne vrne, da bi rekel: zahvaljen za dar. Ne dvigaj, kar je na dnu. Ne bo trpkega dvoma, je zakričal z izpodkopano vero v svoj revni rod: “Proč od tebe! Proč, kamor koli!”.

Mož je vztrepetal in se zgrozil ob dvomu in sklepu. Njegova duša je nenadoma občutila, kakšna bolečina je, ko se trgajo vezi, s katerimi si se priklenil na svoj rod, kako teče kri iz srca na grudo, ki jo zapuščaš, kako nenadoma vstajajo, ki si jih izredil in vzgojil, kako se dvigajo od tal, z dna in kipe kvišku, kamor si jim pokazal.
“Ne proč! Nazaj!” krikne srce v obraz režečemu se dvomu. “Mož mora naprej, samo naprej. Izpij do dna, naj je čaša življenja še tako gorjupa!”.
Župniku je zažarelo obličje. Dvignil je glavo in vzkliknil: "Da, naprej, samo naprej! Moja vera je velika, moje srce sluti veliki dan ” Zasvetile so se mu oči kakor vidcu.
Ha, giblje se na dnu! Tlačeni bo planil kvišku, že rožljajo verige — napenjajo se in pokajo. Ljudstvo vstaja. To je tisto ljudstvo, ki se ne oblači v mehko, ki ne biva v palačah. Oj, vi, ki ste mehko oblečeni, vi v zlatih palačah, vi praznujete sveti večer in govorite o Betlehemu kakor o veseli bajki. Pa vi ne poznate hlevca, ker ne poznate koč in ne brlogov in ne trpljenja v njih in ne poznate in se ne zavedate moči, ki se dviga s krepkih ramen in vstaja. Vstajajo, ki so bili gaženi. že vre na dnu. Vi oholi, vi pene na vrhu kipenja, pomnite, da je v svetu pisal zgodbe trpin, pisal jih, ko se je prebudil osuvan in zbičan. Vse veliko se poraja z dna. Betlehem, razkošnega bogastva poln, je vrgel seme iz sebe na temno ravan, na dno zapuščene votline. Na je vzklilo tam iz nizkosti in rastlo in razprostrlo veje drevesa čez zemeljsko oblo. Tako tedaj, tako sedaj. Pene bodo splahnele, gramoz od tal pa bo zidal novo stavbo. Ljudstvo dela in trpljenja, kovano kakor jeklo, bo zadonelo kakor bron in zapelo novo pesem o rojstvu, ki se je spočelo v trpljenju, ki je bilo nošeno v odpovedi in rojeno v koresli. In tedaj porečem: Bratje, napočil je sveti dan, rodil se kakor sveti Božič na trdnem ležišču, pahnjen od bogastva proč — v hlev. Veseli se, moje ljudstvo, treso naj se zlati stoli, in svilene halje naj oblečejo reševnik, zakaj poraja se veliki dan — od dna — od ljudstva. .. v odpovedi in rojeno v goresti. In tedaj porečem: Bratje, napočil je svet/ dan, rodil se kakor sveti Božič na trdnem ležišču, pahnjen od bogastva proč — v hlev. Veseli se, moje ljudstvo, treso naj se zlati stoli in svilene halje naj oblečejo raševnik, zakaj poraja se veliki dan — od dna

Ta mesec Zveza slavi 46 let obstoja. Ustanovne članice smo se postarale, Zveza pa je v članstvu vedno mlajša. Prav je tako! Naj bi naša lepa organizacija z vsakim letom bila krepkejša in uspešnešja!
Ko sem pisala prvi letnik Zvezine zgodovine sem omenjala up in strah, s katerim se je peščica Slovenk podaja na pot za žensko združenje in ženske ideale, šumelo in ropotalo je od vseh strani, češ, kaj vas je treba; dovolj društev imamo! Očitalo se nam je predrznost in vsiljivost. “Pojdi se solit s svojo Zvezo”, mi je bilo "prijazno” svetovano. “En čas boste rogovilite potem bo pa vse zaspalo", je bilo mnenje drugih. Ustanoviteljice podružnic so se pritoževale, kako se jih pri delu ovira in dela zapreke. Vse to pa Zveze ni ustavite. Lepo je rastla kot roža pomladi. Koncem prvega leta smo imele že 15 podružnic, nad 600 članic in tisočak v blagajni.
K ustanovitvi in napredku naše organizacije je veliko pripomogla pokojna gospa Julia Gottlieb, prva Zvezina glavna tajnica, poznana in priljubljena društvena delavka v Chicagu. Njen soprog John nam je bil v veliko pomoč in vspodbudo, istotako takratni urednik dnevnika AM ERI KANSKI SLOVENEC, g. John Jerich, ki nam je s svojimi izkušnjami večkrat bil nekak pravni svetovalec. Njegov list nam je bil za dopise vedno na razpolago. Tudi gospa Matilda Duller, prva glavna blagajničarka, se je za Zvezo silno navdušite. Ona in Julia Gottlieb sta se z vsakim skregate, ki Zveze ni odobravil.
Kako malo upanja je takrat bilo za uspeh nove organizacije pove članek gospe Gottlieb, priobčen v AMERI-KANSKEM SLOVENCU pričetkom decembra 1927.
“Ko je bil probčen poziv od Mrs. Prisland za ustanovitev Slovenske ženske Zveze, nisem imela upanja na uspeh", piše takratna glavna tajnica ga. Gottlieb. “Če bi ne bilo uredništvo Amerikanskega Slovenca takorekoč next door, bi se mi morda zdelo škoda dva centa za poštnino, da bi moj dopis odposlala”. Dalje omenja zanimivo pismo uglednega rojaka, katerega ime je zadržala. Ta gospod je takrat pisal:
“Upam, da me ne boste imele za vsiljivca, če se tudi jaz malo vtaknem v to, kar je navidez samo stvar žensk. Rečem samo navidez, v resnici pa bo vaša organizacija, ako se uresniči v celi meri in izvrši zamišljene ideje, vplivala na ves slovenski narod v Ameriki. Taka organizacija je bite potrebna v začetku našega naseljevanja. Da ni do tega prišlo že pred leti, kar je za obžalovati, je pripisovati premalo zavednosti pri ženskah, premalo korajže nastopiti v javnosti in lahko tudi rečemo, brez da bi sramotili ženske, premalo znanja in premalo sposobnosti v organiziranju. čas je seveda med nas prinesel velike spremembe. Na-primer, poglejmo slovensko Amerikanko pred 20 leti. (To bi bilo okrog leta 1907, op. pisateljice). Kakšna je bila naša žena takrat? Kaj je delala? Zakaj se je zanimala? Vidimo jo telesno in duševno zaostalo. Bila je po pojmovanju mož samo žena možu in mati njegovih otrok. Oblečena je bila kakor je mož želel. Stanovanje je bilo urejeno, kakor je mož ukazal. Govoriti je smela le o tem, kar je mož pripustil. Bila je samo njegova žena, ne pa njegova tovaršica
v	pravem pomenu besede, ker ji je pač manjkalo znanja in mož se z njo ni mogel o vsem pogovoriti. Pred dvajse-
timi leti je žena imela polno hišo borderjev. Pokoncu je bila prva zjutraj, zadnja šla počivat zvečer, časa ni imela niti se z možem skregati, kaj še le čitati in se poučiti o tej ali oni stvari. Glavna njena skrb je bila — in ta skrb je bila velika in trudapolna — kuhanje, pranje, ribanje poda (takrat ni bilo preprog ali platna), šivanje in povrhu tega je bilo delo in skrb z otroci. Ženska je trpela, ker si ni znela pomagati drugače, pač pa je mislila, da mora biti tako. če se je kaj protivila, je mož že poskrbel, da so ji take misli prešle. Tiho stara! In bila je tiho. časi so se spremenili, žena v sedajnem času se vedno boilj in bolj oprošča s pomočijo modernih naprav napornega dela doma in ji potemtakem ostaja več časa za čitanje in za delo pri društvih in organizacijah.
Kakor vidimo iz poročil in kakor opazujemo drugje, mnogi še ne razumejo pomena vaše Zveze. To so večinoma možki, pa tudi nekatere ženske. Kot jaz stvar razumem, je vaša organizacija ustanovljena kot nekak nadaljni regiment ali oddelek za aktualno in moralno pomoč borilcem in delavcem med našim narodom za naše skupne ideje in cilje. POZOR! WAUKEGAN - NORTH CHICAGO!
Vsej slovenski Ameriki je poznana lepa, velika in aktivna slovenska naselbina v Waukegan-North Chicago.
Bilo je koncem meseca maja leta 1928, ko se je v tej ugledni naselbini ustanovila podružnica Slovenske ženske Zveze. Gospa Frances Terček in gospodična Čepon sta podružnico organizirali z 12 članicami. Z veliko radostjo, da se nam je pridružil Waukegan, kar je bila že dolgo časa moja iskrena želja, sem kot takratna glavna predsednica novo podružnico v Zvezo sprejela, ji dala številko 20 ter zaprisegla novi odbor.
Navdušenje za novo podružnico je bilo veliko. Tudi moj prijatelj g. Frank Opeka, takratni gl. odbornik K.S.K. Jednote je pri ustanovitvi sodeloval, zakar sem mu bila zelo hvaležna. Takoj sem veselo novico o novi podružnici sporočila listu AMERIKANSKI SLOVENEC, kar je bilo priobčeno 8, junija 1928. Isti dan, ko je list dospel, sem prejela poročite iz Waukegana, da se je nove podružnica —takorekoč ob rojstvu— razbite. Vzrok razpustitve niso bile nove članice, temveč nekdo drug. Od takrat sem večkrat poskušala, da bi prišlo do ustanovitve nove podružnice, a biez uspeha. Pisala sem na več krajev, večkrat osebno šla v Waukegan ter govorite z tamošnjimi odličnimi, vplivnimi osebami naj poskusijo oživeti zanimanje za novo podružnico, saj ima Zveza v vsaki večji slovenski naselbini podružnico le v Waukeganu ne. Obljubili so sodelovanje, a ostalo je le pri obljubah. Ker še vedno gojim iskreno željo, da bi Zveza imela podružnico v Waukeganu, se zdaj javno obračam na to lepo slovensko naselbino.

Postanite del deset-tišoč članske ženske, organizacije, kateri boste veliko koristile s svojimi idejami in sodelovanjem.

Moj Bog, daj, (la nc l»o prepozno!
Vsako življenje ima svojo pot. Ni samo v pridobivanju znanja, ampak tudi v dobrih delih za druge, v izpolnjevanju svojih dolžnosti in delu, ki ga opravljamo. “Moj Bog, daj da ne bo prepozno, je zapisal ob svojem spreobrnenju Aleš Carrel’, eden izmed velikih učenjakov današnjih časov.
Že v njegovi mladosti so ljudje govorili, da ima oči na hrbtu. Sam pa je o sebi izjavili ko je biil 40 let star: “Hodil sem skozi življenje kakor bi bil slep.” Po svojem poklicu je bil zdravnik. Napisal je lepo število knjig. Zanimive so knjige o vodstvu življenja, o tajnosti človeškega življenja, o molitvi. Njegovo življenje je bila napeta igra, ki je dosegla višek v njegovi prošnji: “Moj Bog, daj, da ne bo prepozno.”
Bil je doma iz verne družine. Na vseučilišču pa je izgubili vero. Tajiil je Boga, dušo in čudeže in naravni zakon, Vs« je imel za prazen nič.
Proti koncu svojega življenja pa se je vrnil k Bogu. Prosil ga je, da naj mu podaljša življenje, da bi mogel ponižno služiti Njemu in ljudem, ki trpe. Velika ljubezen do trpečih ljudi mu je pripravila pot do spreobrnenja.
Določen, da spremilja romarski vlak bolnikov v Lurd, je to nejevoljo sprejel. Med bolniki je bila tudi neka bolnica, ki je imela neozdravljivo jetiko. Zdravniki so izjavili, da ni več rešitve. Tudi on, ko jo je videl, je rekel; “Bojim se, da mi bo v rokah umrla.” Z vsem znanjem ni mogel pomagati, Izjavil je: “Če bo ta .mladenka ozdravela, bo to pravi čudež.". Ko bi se to zgodilo bi on sprejel vero. Da, postal bi celo kartuzijan, redovnik strogega reda.
Ko so prišli v Lurd, je Carrel iz ljubezni do te mlade trpeče osebe začel moliti in prositi Marijo: “Ozdravi to mladenko, ker toliko trpi." čudež; se je res zgodil. Carrel je bil prevzet, ganjen. Ni pa se mogel verovati, še je potreboval več milosti. A bil je začetek. Pozneje je zapisal: Življenje ni samo v pridobivanju znanja, ampak v ljubezni in podpiranju drugih.
Te ljubezni nas uči božje Dete v jaslicah. Vesel božič vsem.

December je tukaj in božični prazniki se bližajo. Tudi naša organizacija se pripravlja nanje. Potrebujemo novih moči z novimi idejami in se obračamo na vse za pomoč.
V četrtek dne 14. dec. se bo vršila naša letna seja in božičnica za odrasle članice. Servirale bomo posebno “božično večerjo" ob 7 zvečer.

Vstopnice za koncert, 4. februarja v Orchestra Hall, že prodajamo, če bo vsaka članica prodala pet vstopnic bomo res imeli zaželjeni uspeh. Potrudimo se, da dosežemo ta cilj.

V jesenskem času, ko krizanteme najlepše cveto, nam je kruta smrt utrgala čla. Mary Golob in jo sprejela v kraj okdoder ni vrnitve. Pogrešana ne bo samo kot dobra žena in mati, temveč tudi od vseh, ki smo jo poznali. Draga sosestra, počivaj mirno v senci grobov.
Mary Novak žaluje za prerano umrlo sestro Angie Yersin. Zavratna bolezen je končala njeno mlado življenje. Umrl je tudi Louis Glavan, brat čla. Mary Mohorčič. Vsem žalujočim ostalim naše globoko sožalje.
V bolnici se nahaja Mary Derose, (dekliško ime Hren) in Elsie Mramor, ki je prestala operacijo izrezka na roki. Edith Moody je tudi bolj rahlega zdravja. John Barker, soprog naše čla. Elsie B. se dobro zdravi po operaciji.
Naše častitke č. g. L. Mihelič iz Denverja k proslavi 40 letnice mašništ-va. Fr. Mihelič je let župnik fare Sv. Rožnega venca. Bog naj obilno blagoslovi njegovo delo v duhovniški službi. On je tudi iskren prijatelj naše SŽZ. Bog ga živi!

Proslava Penna Konvencije Sijajno Uspela
Dne. 8. oktobra smo praznovali Zvezin dan združen z državno konvencijo za Pensilvanijo. Gostiteljica je bila podr. št. 26 v Pittsburghu. Udeležba je bila velika.
Konvenčna seja se je pričela ob 2 uri pop. Navzoča je bila tudi glavna predsednica Zveze, ki je lepo govorila in dala dobre nasvete v korist organizacije.
On pol štirih smo šli v gornje prostore, kjer je bilo vse pripravljeno za konvenčni banket. Father Demšar so pričeli z molitvijo, nato je Mrs. Trontel pozdravila navzoče in je tudi bila izvoljena za bodočo državno predsednico za Pensilvanijo in New York.
Lepa hvala velja gl. preds. Mrs. Turek in možu Franku, dalje prisrčna hvala stolo-ravnatelju Mr. Frank Lokar za lepo urejen program. Iskrena zahvala Mrs. Skerlong, ogla-ševalki na slovenskem radio programu, ki je tako lepo oglaševala našo prireditev, enako tudi Mr. Joe Biliču. Hvala tudi mojima dvema pra-vnukoma, Franku in Terril ki sta lepo igrala na harmonike.
Torej še enkrat hvala vsem podružnicam, članicam in prijateljem za udeležbo. Posebna hvala tudi Mrs. Trontel in Mrs. Jacob in članicam podr. št. 106, ki so mi pomagale in bile v veliko pomoč, da je vse lepo izteklo.

zahvalo mojim dragim soses. podr. št. 63 za krasno darilo, svečko z okraski cvetlic. Vedno se me spomnijo ob priliki Zvezinih sestankov.
Mesec december je značilen v zgodovini naše SŽZ. Dne. 19. dec. bo poteklo 46 let odkar je ga. Marie Pris-land pozvala slovenske žene v Ameriki, da se organizirajo v naši SŽZ. Danes ji kličemo: Bog jo blagoslovi še mnogo let in jo nagradi z dobrim zdravjem in srečo, ne samo za ta uspeh, ampak tudi za lepa poročila v naši zanimivi Zarji, katero odlično urejuje priljubljena Corinne Leskovar.
S	potekom tega meseca, bodo odbornice končale leto svojega uradnega dela. Katere boste sprejele urad ne samo zato, da ste priznane, ampak da tudi storite in doprinesete svoj delež kot zvesta uradnica svoje podr. naše SŽZ.
Naša cla. Johana Klune se je poslovila od nas ter odletela nazaj v Chicago, kjer jo je hčerka Mary ljubeče sprejela. G. Klune je v Pueblo pri sinu, Joe obhajala 92 letni rojstni dan.
V	juniju je bila pri nas, ker sin živi na farmi. Zrak ji je dobro vplival na zdravje. Prijatelji so jo slovesno počastili za njeno častitljivo starost. Vse čla. podr. ji kličemo, še na mnoga leta z nami soses. Klune. Naj dodam, da še vedno nadaljuje njeno priljubljeno ročno delo in to brez očal.
Končno naj opozorim, da še imam na rokah Kuharske knjige v angleškem jeziku, ki so lepo darilo za praznike.
Vsaka podr. naj bi si prizadevala, da bi članska kampanja uspela. Torej vse na delo: uspeh je naš smoter in cilj.
V nadi, da boste imeli povsod blagoslovljeni Božični dan in zdravo ter srečno Novo in mnogo uspeha za nove članice, Vas vse najlepše pozdravlja.

Dne 29. oktobra smo skupne podružnice počastile našo glavno urednico, Corinne Leskovar. Prišlo je mnogo ljudi iz več mest, da prisostvujejo proslavi. Program je bil zelo lep, zato ni nobenemu žal, da je bil navzoč. Corinne je žel 20 let pri težkem delu urejevanja naše priljublene Zarje, čast komur čast!

Od mnogih žena, ki želijo napredek naši organiza-R ciji, slišim, da podcenjujemo moči mladih ljudi in nezaupanje vanje, jih L: požene k drugim, nam tujim društvom. Vzroke za tako odtujevanje mo-K ramo iskati pri sebi in ne drugod. Ali ni najbolj pogosta tožba na naših j* ustih: “Oh, saj tamladi se za nič ne zanimajo!” V resnici pa se združuje jejo v novih društvih in so sposobni kar precejšnih odpovedi. Vse to preji mislite, ko boste volile za nov odbor pri svoji podružnici in naprej je ž treba vedeti kaj želite za svojo podružnico. v Slovenskem domu na 14. cesti. Imele bomo volitve za prihodnje leto, zato si ta dan gotovo odmerite, da boste navzoče. Po seji bo pa brat naše predsednice kazal slike iz lepo urejene Slovenske Pristave, kjer smo bili letos.
V	novembru se vrne iz čateških Toplic v Sloveniji naša tajnica in blagajničarka.
Leto se nagiba h koncu, enako naše življenje. Stari rek pravi; danes meni, jutri Tebi.

KAMPANJA IIM ŽENA LETA:
Kako gre, vprašujem mnoge tajnice, ko jim pišem še o kaki drugi zadevi. Moram sama odkovoriti:	Slabo	gre!
Ali si bomo res zopet morale sposoditi kako "kraljico ali princeso" za prvo nagrado kampanje? ženske, kje ste? Ali ne živimo v Ameriki?
Konvencija se hitro bliža Zbralo se nas bo lepo število delegatinj in gostov. Ali bi res hotele priti praznih rok v Chicago? Ne ! Zopet bomo tekmovale med seboj. Pri zadnji kampanji sem slišala: "že spet je njeno ime med prvimi”. Delavnost bo tudi tokrat določila, katere ime bo na prvi strani Zarje. Pohitimo, dokler je čas! Povabite svoje znanke v družbo in v svoje vrste jih sprejmite! Obogatimo našo organizacijo z novimi članicami in dolgo bo živela Slovenska ženska zveza!

Zelo sem vesela, da se zopet malo oglasim. Naša seja v septembru, je bila kar po navadi. Tako smo bile srečne, da je prišla na sejo Mrs. Urbas, ki je bila naša predsednica mnogo let. Praznovala je 94 letni rojstni dan in spekla nam je rozinovo potico dovolj za vse. Prav veselo smo ji zapele Happy birthday in ji voščile še mnogo let zdravja.
Sporočam tudi drugim članicam, da se potrudite in pridete na seje, ker se imamo vedno lepo. Pred leti so naše članice bolj rade prihajale, vendar bi bilo prav, da bi tudi sedaj prišle, posebno kadar imate godove, da bomo tudi vam zapele in vas nekoliko razveselile.
Poleg veselih, pa imamo tudi žalostne novice. Izgubile smo članice: Louise Ulle in Frances Skubic. V imenu podr. in nas vseh, globoko sožalje.
Tudi tistim, ki ste bolane želimo,
da bi kmalu ozdravele.
Ker boste ta dopis brale že v decembru, vas prav lepo pozdravim in želim vam vesele Božične praznike in srečno Novo leto. Res gredo leta kar hitro naprej. Leto 1973 bi rade začele s tem, bi pridobile kaj novih članic.
Dajte naši podružnici malo pomagati, saj se vedno kje rodi punčka ali fantek in z mladino gremo naprej.
Ko končam leto 1972, želim, da bodo vse članice zdrave do svidenja. Vaša poročevalka in zapisnikarica.
SOPHIE MAGAYNA
ŠT. 17, WEST ALLIS, WIS.
Ko smo dne 22. oktobra zasedle autobus, da se popeljemo v Willard, Wis. na letno državno konvencijo, je bilo deževno vreme. Kar hitro smo pozabile na kislo vreme zunaj, ko nam je naš prijazni šofer povedal nekaj smešnic, da smo se prav od srca na-smejale.
Dekleta od št. 102 v Willardu so nas vse prijazno sprejele ter nas takoj pogostile s kavo in različnim pecivom.
Vse članice smo bile veselo presenečene nad tako veliko udeležbo, kar seveda pomeni, kako so te konvencije priljubljene med članstvom Zveze in je udeležba vedno večja.
Takoj smo pričele z delom in pazljivo poslušale poročjla vseh naših podružnic in njihovo delovanje in napredek. Enako tudi priporočila za glavno konvencijo Zveze, v letu 1973 v Chicagu.
Zopet smo soglasno izvolite ga. Rose Kramer za našo državno predsednico. Ona je navdušena delavka, sposobna, odločna, dobra govornica in nad vsem tem zelo prijazna ter zelo priljubljena med nami. Prepričane smo, da nas bo dobro zastopala na vsenarodni konvenciji v maju.
Ob 12-tih smo imele sv. mašo v lepi novi cerkvi sv. Družine, ki jo je daroval Rev. Michael Mertens, ki sicer ni Slovenec, toda nam je zelo lepo opisal zgodovino našega naroda. Paz-no smo ga poslušate in smo mu hvaležne za lep govor.
Po okusnem banketu nas je zabaval pevski zbor cerkve sv. Družine in to seveda s prelepimi slovenskimi pesmimi, ki so vedno naš velik užitek. Najbolj pa mi je ugajal duet ge. Lois Lesar in njene hčerke Laure. Kako nam vedno gre do srca slov. pesem, ako jo zapojejo tukaj rojeni otroci naših rojakov, ki spoštujejo jezik staršev ter poveličujejo s pesmijo zemljo, ki jim je malo ali nič poznana. Hvala pevskemu zboru, Rev. M. Martensu in posebno iskrena hvala članicam št. 102 za Vaš trud in prijaznost.
Med dežjem in smešnicami našega šoferja, smo srečne prirajžale domov.
Sklenite smo tudi, da bo letna konvencija drž. Wis. za leto 1973 pri nas v West Allisu. Potrudile se bomo, da bomo tudi me vse storite, da bo vaš obisk za ta dan zanimiv in uspešen v vsakem pogledu. Na zadnji seji smo tudi sklenite, da bomo istočasno obhajale tudi 45 letnico ustanovitve podr. št. 17. Zvezin dan in proslava obletnice bo v jeseni, toda točni datum bo objavljen pozneje.
Kartna zabava, katero smo imele v oktobru, je bila velik uspeh. Seveda velja prisrčna hvala vsem, ki ste delale in vsem, ki ste darovale v ta namen in enako vse tistim, ki ste prišle
na ta večer in s tem pripomogle naši blagajni.
Vabim vse, da se gotovo udeležite glavne seje v decembru, da bomo kaj koristnega ukrenite za leto 1973. Imele bomo malo X-mas party ter izmenjavo daril. Seveda ako vam ni za darila, pridite vse eno, da se malo pozabavamo pri čašici kave. Ne bo vam žal!

Leto 1972 se bliža h koncu. V decembru imamo našo važno letno sejo, ko se izvoli odbor za prihodnje leto. Točen čas bo objavljen na radiju in časopisu. Prosim, da pridete vse, da daste svoje, predloge za bodoče delo.
V	tem letu smo imele samo 2 seji. Sedaj so počitnice za nami in več naših članic se je vrnilo iz obiska domovine Slovenije. Ses. Kuntara in njen mož sta vzela celo poletje. Na obisku domovine je bila tudi ses. Mi-helich in ses. Annie Kvaternik. Na gl. seji, upam, da pridete in nam poveste
o	svojih doživljajih na potovanju.
Letos smo imeli več prireditev in to od podr., društva in kluba s piknikom, ki je bil v Eveleth parku.
Z veseljem smo se podate na Zvezin dan v Ely. Imele smo charter bus skupno s sosednjimi podr. Aurora, Bi-wabik, McKinley in Gilbert. Hvala ses. Annie Kastelic, ki je vse uredila za bus.
V	Ely je bilo vse najlepše urejeno. Posebno smo bile vesele imeti v naši sredi našo priljubljeno urednico Zarje, Corinne Leskovar. Imela je res lep nagovor ter nam vse lepo razložila o delu Zarje in Zveze. Bilo je mnogo lepega petja in odličnih govorov. Zahvala vsem, posebno podr. v Ely za lepo postrežbo in sesterski sprejem.
Ob zaključku leta, naj nekoliko poročam novice naše podr. št. 19. Imele smo 6 smrtnih slučajev. Njihova imena sem že poročala. V skladu z društvenimi dolžnostmi smo se od vseh lepo in sočutno poslovite. Žalujočim družinam izrekamo globoko sožalje. Naj vse zveste članicem počivajo v miru božjem.
Imele smo tudi 4 neveste, ki so v tem letu vstopile v zakon. Vsem želimo srečno in zadovoljno zakonsko življenje. V zadnji Zarji je bila priobčena poročna slika Nennett Primozich, hčerke od Billy Primozich. V tej številki v angleškem delu Zarje pa je slika hčerke Jean Ann Primozich in ženina
James Rien. Tudi ona je naša čla. od rojstva, ker je 9 članov Primožičeve družine vpisanih pri naši podr. Vse so vesele, da so naše članice, kakor tudi sin Joe P. Njihov oče Mr. John Primozich je tudi v gl. uradu Slovenske Katoliške Jednote v Jolietu in tudi preds. krajevne podr. KSKJ. Vsa družina je marljiva na društvenem polju ter uživajo ugled kot businesmen, saj vodijo že veliko let grocerijsko trgovino in mesnico ter sin Joe ima točilnico pijače. Vsej družini želimo še mnogo uspehov!
Srečni smo, da imamo tukaj za župnika g. Father F. Perkovich, ki je tudi duhovni vodja podr. Zelo je zaposlen, ker mora sam opravljati duhovniške posle v eveletski naselbini in okolici. Posebno se ga razveselijo bolniki, katere rad obišče, želimo mu zdravja in upamo, da se vidimo na naši gl. seji v dec.
Več naših članic se zdravi doma, ene v bolnišnici, druge v nursing home. Vseh se bomo spomnite z molitvijo.
Ponovno Vas prosim, da pridete v velikem številu na letno sejo. Po seji se bomo malo pogovorile kaj vse je bilo črez leto. Tudi malo okrepčila bo. Pridite, ne bo Vam žal! Upamo, da bo lep večer.
Ob koncu pošiljam božična voščila z željami,, da bi praznike vsi preživeli v zdravju in veselju in zadovoljstvu in da bi Novo leto nam prineslo mnogo blagoslova. Posebno tudi naši ustanoviteljici Mrs. Marie Prisland želimo, da jo Bog obrani še mnoga leta, kakor vse voditeljice Zveze in duhovnemu vodji Fr. Okorn. Bodite vsi srčno pozdravljeni!

Na naši oktoberski seji, smo proslavile štiri članice, ki so praznovale imendane. Te so bile: nadzornica Frances Bottari. Vsem smo želele še mnogo zdravih in čilih let med nami. V ta namen smo imele skromni prigrizek in sicer so torte podarile: Emma Planinšek, Olga Ancel, Josephine Erjavec in Olga Ancel tudi kavo.
Preds, poroča o vožnji na drž. konvencijo v La Salle pred nekaj tedni. Od preostanka voznih stroškov, je tajnica poklonila malo nagrado dobremu vozniku, in pri vsem tem, nam je ostalo še $15, kar je bilo poslano v Šolninski S. Sklad.
Preds, omenja, da ima tajnica veliko zalogo knjižic za pokritje konvenč-nih stroškov, ki bo drugo leto v Chicagu. Posamezne srečke so po lOcts. ali cela stran po 50cts. Na razpolago so članicam, da pridno sežejo po njih in jih pomagajo prodati, ker dobiček je v celoti za našo blagajno. Nekatere so se ponudile, da bodo pomagate pri
BARAGOV PROCES PRI PAPEŽU
Prvi korak do svetništva za misijonskega škofa Friderika Ireneja Barago
—	piše New York Times 19. septembra v posebnem poročilu iz Marketa— je bil zaključen in izsledki škofijskega sodišča z vsem gradivom o Baragi bodo zdaj poslani v Vatikan v nadaljnje proučevanje in postopek. — škof Baraga — nadaljuje New York Times — je bil rojen v Sloveniji leta 1797 in je prišel leta 1830 kot misijonar v Ameriko, kjer je 37 let deloval med Indijanci v Michiganu in delih Wisconsina, Minnesote in Kanadske pokrajine Ontario. Bil je prvi škof v SauT Ste. Marie—Marketske škofije, je umrl leta 1868 in je pokopan v kripti katedrale sv. Petra v Marketu. Gradivo, ki je bilo zbrano in predloženo škofijskemu tribunalu je sad več kot 30 letnega raziskovalnega dela v glavnem pod vodstvom Baragove zveze v Marketu. Po izjavi Charlesa Strelicka, elana škofijskega sodišča, je o Baragi med drugim pričal Ghauncey Moran iz Velikega zaliva (Big Bay), ki je izjavil, da pripisuje ozdravljenje po odstranitvi na raku obolele ledvice molitvam škofu Baragi. Duhovnik Strelick je povedal dalje, da je nadaljnj priča — Bernard Lambert, 43 letni uradnik v okraju Baraga in avtor Baragovega življenjepisa, izpovedal, da je po molitvah škofu Baragi za pomoč ozdravel od artritisa. Njegov “čudež” je eden od faktorjev, ki jih morajo presoditi v Rimu, je dejal duhovnik Strelick. — Zadevo za kanoniza-
prodaji. Veliki dobitek je $500, zato je vredno se potruditi.
Častitke so bile poslane naši dolgoletni članici Mary Bistry iz Clement Str., ki je s soprogom Leo, obhajala 50 letnico zakona. Slavnost se je pričela v cerkvi, nakar je bil sprejem na domu, katerega se je udeležilo mnogo naših članic. Preds. nam je poklicala v sponim, kako je naša slavljenka šla na roko in šivala prve uniforme, ko smo organizirale prvi vežbalni krožek. Za njeno dobro voljo in delo smo ji iskreno hvaležne!
Naše čestitke Berti Hofer, hčerki predsednice Emme Planinšek, ki je bila imenovana kot trustee v Sherwood oddelku Jolieta. Bila je tudi prej zaposlena v mestnem uradu.
Dalje, Dianne Kalcic, ki je uslužbe-na v župnišču Rojstva Marije in je bila večkrat modelka za Business in Professional! Women’s Club in pa za Chamber of Commerce Women’s Club. Naše čestitke! Njena mati, Frances Kalcic in pa Marie, njena sestra, so vse naše članice.
Naše čestitke urednici Corinne in njenemu soprogu Dr. Lud Leskovar, ker sta posredovala, da je zabavni
cijo škofa Barage je na škofiji uradno začel meseca junija marketski škof Charles Salatka, ki je izbral sodišče; Škofijski postopek je označen kot “informativen” in je važen, ker mora informirati Vatikan, da ima škofija kandidata za svetništvo in zakaj. V Vatikanu zadevo pregleda Kongregacija za zadeve svetnikov, ki lahko vpraša škofijski tribunal za nadaljnje informacije. Končno odločitev pa napravi Papež na osnovi zaključkov Kongregacije. — če bo škof Baraga priznan za svetnika — piše New York Times — bo drugi Američan, ki bo dosegel to čast. Prva je bila častita mati Francis Xavier Cabrini iz Chicaga, Stopnjo blaž-nega — to je stopnjo pred kanonizacijo so dosegli trije Američani: Mati Elizabeta Seton iz New Yorka, škof John Neumann iz Filadelfije ter redovnica Rose Philipine Duchesne, ustanoviteljica ameriške veje Družbe Pre svetega Srca.
Škof Baraga velja za enega izmed soustanoviteljev Katoliške Cerkve v Združenih državah, ker se je udeležil prve ameriške škofijske sinode v Baltimoru. Baraga ima tudi častno mesto v Ameriškem Narodnem svetišču v Washintonu, kjer ima v zakristiji svoje okno, v slovenski kapeli pa relief, krščevanje Indijancev področja Velikih jezer, kar tudi simbolizira slovenski doprinos širjenju katolicizma v Združenih državah.

slovenski ansamble HENČEK nastopil na odru Sv. Štefana in nam tako prinesel košček naše Slovenije. Henčkovi fantje so res izvrstna glasbena skupina in vsi Jolietčani smo se vračali domov zelo dobre volje, ko smo prisostvovali tako lepi prireditvi. Iz Jolieta nas je bilo najmanj 28 z našo grupo ter tudi več drugih iz našega mesta. Na svidenje na prihodnjem nastopu slovenskih pevcev in igralcev!
JOSEPHINE ERJAVEC

Že precej časa se nisem oglasila. Upala sem, da bo katera druga kaj napisala, pa ni bilo nič.
Najprej moram poročati o lepem programu skupnih podružnic. Mrs. Bostian je vodila lep program tisto nedeljo. Najprej je bilo okusno kosilo. Po večerji so nastopile članice pevskega zbora Dawn, ki so res lepo zapele. Potem sta bila na pevskem programu duet in še eden duet. Vsem zahvala in priznanje, upamo, da nadaljujejo, da ne bo zmanjkalo dobrih pevcev.
Po lepih govorih so tudi mene počastile in Mrs. Striniša z lepim šopkom in darom. Za vse prav prisrčna hvala.
Sem res rada delala za našo Zvezo v mojih mlajših letih, ali sedaj sem pa kar nekoliko opešala. Vse gre bolj počasi. Rada sem dopisovala v našo Zarjo o delovanju naše podr., a sedaj nisem več tako pripravna za to delo, ki se rado odloži, a čas teče naglo naprej.
Pri naši podr. članice rade prihajajo na seje, ker imamo vedno nekaj za razvedrilo in malo prigrizka, da vse lepo teče naprej.
Posebno vas vabim na december-sko sejo, ki bo nekaj posebnega. To bo dne 10. dec. ob drugi uri pop. Pridite, ne bo vam žal. Že sedaj vam vsem želim Vesele praznike.
Naše sestre, ki so še vedno v ne-govališčih: Pauline Stampfel, Jennie Strnad, Mary Zelko, in Mary Sadar. Vsem želim voljnega potrpljenja, enako tudi vsem, ki se zdravijo na domu.
Prosim tudi tiste, ki še niste poravnale članarine za letos, da bi poslale, ker moramo zaključiti račune ob zatonu leta in asesment mora biti plačan. Ravno sedaj je umrla ena članica, pa je hčerka prinesla pogrebniku polico in knjižico in ko pogledamo kedaj je zadnjič plačala, pa je bilo ravno pred 10 leti. Prosim vse članice, da ste bolj točne, kar je v vašem interesu in tajnici olajšate sitno delo in skrb.

Zopet je čas, da se oglašam v naši priljubljeni Zarji. Rada poročam o lepo uspeli prireditvi državne konvencije za Pensilvanijo. Ob dveh pop. smo imele sejo ob veliki udeležbi članic. Glavna predsednica in državna preds. sta nam priporočale, da pridno delamo za napredek naših podružnic in za pridobivanje novih članic.
Po zborovanju se je pričel banket, kjer je tudi bila lepa udeležba in velja vsa hvala odboru in posameznim članicam, ki so tako pridno delale za lepo uspelo proslavo .Prva zahvala velja naši radijski oznanjevalki, Mary Sker-long, ki je zelo lepo oglašala našo prireditev in seveda tudi našim kuharicam in njihovim pomočnicam, ki so nam pripravile tako okusno kosilo.
Hvala Rev. Fr. Demšarju za molitve pred jedjo in po banketu, dalje gl. preds. in njenemu soprogu, ki sta prišla iz Clevelanda ter drž. preds., Mrs. Tomšič, ki je tudi pripeljala s seboj svoja dva pravnuka, da sta nam zaigrala na harmonike nekaj lepih pesmi in poskočnih melodij. Lepa jima hvala in tudi prišrčna zahvala našemu sto-loravna-telju, Franku Lokarju, ki je tako lepo vodil program in petje in tudi vsem ostalim govornikom iskrena zahvala.
Posebna zahvala sosednjim podružnicam, ki so se udeležile banketa.
Prvo odlikovanje gre št. 67 iz Besimer, Pa., odkoder jih je prišlo 40 članic, druga je bila št. 71, Strabane z 19 članicami in tretja Universal, (št. 96) s 13 čla., četrta je št. 77 s 6 članicami in peta je bila Meadowland, št. 106, katero so zastopale 4 čla. Za ostale ne vem. Od 20 Penna. podružnic, se nekatere niso oglasile, toda velika udeležba je bila od naših domačih čla. in prijateljev, da je bila dvorana popolnoma napolnjena in je bil uspeh v vsakem pogledu.
Po programu nam je kazal lepe slike Mr. Sero, ki je prišel 25 milj daleč, da je z nami delil krasne slike, katere so bile posnete ob priliki proslave slovenske kmečke ohceti v Ljubljani. Mr. Sero je imel en ameriški par, da sta se v Sloveniji poročila ob tej priliki. Tam je bilo 16 parov iz vseh koncev sveta. Še enkrat mu najlepša hvala za kazanje lepih slik.
Vabim vse čla., da gotovo pridete na našo letno sejo dne 19. decembra, da bomo kaj ukrenile v dobrobit podružnice. Izvolile bomo odbor za leto
1973,	nakar bo letna božičnica, ki je vedno vesela z izmenjavo daril. Prosim, da vsaka čla. prinese darilo v vrednosti $2. To bo veselega presen-čenja, kaj je v teh darilih.
Končno želim vsem bolnim članicam ljubo zdravje in vesel Božič vsem glavnim uradnicam in vsem članicam širom Amerike. Da bi ljubi Bog naklonil vsem ljubo zdravje ter mnogo srče v Novem letu 1973.

rem pozabiti naše Zarje, čeprav jo redko dobivam. Menda je kriva pošta, ki je precej neredna.
Sedaj se nahajam v domu ostarelih v Oakridge, III., kamor so me poslali po hudi bolezni iz Aurore. Moji otroci so vsi poročeni ter raztreseni po Ameriki in moj ljubljeni dom v Aurori je bil prodan. Sedaj sem se že precej privadila, dasiravno sem edina Slovenka v Zavodu. Hudo mi je, ker ne vidim več brati in zelo pogrešam Slovensko berivo, pišem pa počasi, da tako vidim, če svinčnik vsaj kolikor toliko razločno piše. Urednico prosim, da potrpi z menoj!
Bom zelo vesela ko bom zopet prejela Zarjo, da bom iz nje vsaj zvedela novice iz raznih naselbin. Zvedela sem, da je zelo popularen list, zato smo Slovenke lahko ponosne na naše glasilo!
Drugič upam, da bom vam opisala kako se imamo tukaj.

Naša društvena seja je bila 4. okt. ob 2 uri pop. v Slovenskem domu. Na seji smo se kar dobro imele in razmotrivale smo o več predlogih glede delovanja podr. Sklenile smo tudi, da gremo na delo za pridobitev kaj novih članic, ker starejše nas zapuščajo in odhajajo v večnost.
Ker ne bomo imele nov. seje, zato smo se dogovorile, da bo na naši letni seji dne 6. dec. takoj po seji puranova večerja in igrale bomo karte. Seveda bomo končale večer s petjem božičnih pesmi. Zato drage sestre, pridite vse na glavno sejo, da boste izvolile dober odbor za leto 1973, ker drugo leto bo zopet dosti dela pred nami. - Tudi po zadnji seji smo igrale priljubljene igre in smo imele dober lunch.
Nekaj članic imamo na bolniški listi. Vsem želimo hitro ozdravljenje!
Naše iskreno sožalje družini pok. Mary Pluth, katero bomo zelo pogrešale, ker je bila dobra članica. Naj v miru počiva!
OBISK SLOVENIJE
Drugo jutro v nedeljo ob 7 uri zjutraj smo že pristali na Brniku pri Ljubljani. Kako veselje je bilo ob sprejemu. S solzami v očem smo se objemali in mojih 29 sorodnikov me je pričakalo s svežimi rožami. Po malem oddihu smo se odpeljali z autom v Ljubljano in ko sem zagledala grad, se mi je srce stisnita. Grad res krasi slovensko prestolno mesto.
Preveč bi bilo podrobno opisovati moje 4 mesečne počitnice, toda naj samo na kratko omenim, da so počitnice bile prekratke, vendar sem obiskala Italijo, Nemčijo, Austrijo in seveda celo Slovenijo. Napozabni dan sem tudi preživela na ameriško-slovenskem pikniku 4. julija v Škofji Loki. Rekli so, da je bilo tam 4 tisoč amerikanskih izletnikov in 12 tisoč domačinov. Spekli in pojedli smo celega vola. Program je bil dobro izpeljan. Nastopilo je več govornikov, a posebno lepo so nas razveseljevale godbe, ki so menda prišle iz cele Slovenije. Posebno veliki aplavz so doživeli Vadnalovi fantje iz Clevelanda. Kar grmelo je od navdušenja po Škofji Loki in dolini. Ples pa trajal do 3 ure
Sprejem naših na Brniku.
Naj nekoliko popišem moje potovanje po Sloveniji. Odpotovala sem koncem maja in na poti se ustavila v Chicagu, kjer sem obiskala moje dve hčerki Ruth in Pat z možem Bob. Poklicala sem našo gl. tajnico, Faniko Humar, ki je prišla z njenim autom in mi razkazala gl. urad, kamor je prišla tudi urednica Corinne Leskovar in gdč. Ančka Ahačič. Imele smo prijetni in zanimiv razgovor o delu Zveze. Nato me je Fanika peljala nazaj k moji hčerki, katero je istočasno pridobila za članico št. 2 v Chicagu. Moja hčerka ima važno službo učiteljice bolničark, ali registered nurses na University of Chicago. Ker bo Ruth živela stalno v Chicagu, je obljubila, da bo hodila na seje Zveze in pomagala.
Iz velikanskega čikaškega 0’Hare letališča smo odleteli z lepim Innex Adria slovenskim letalom iz Clevelanda 28. maja in nas je mirno prepeljal preko velike luže. Potovanje je bilo izvrstno, vreme lepo, družba odlična s slov. orkestrom, ki je pridno igral.
Da se ne bo moj p is zavlekel, mori končati. S težim srcem sem se 7 t. poslov i I a od ih dragih. Ob 11 smo zopet zle-
i	nazaj črez morje ob 5 uri pop. smo pristali v Clevelan-potem pa nazaj Chicago, kjer sem en k r a t obiskala moja hčerke, nakar zopet naprej v Duluth, kjer me čakal moj mož Joe! Joj, ali je zopet bilo veselo snidenje! Sedaj sem doma vesela in imam kar dosti dela. — Z zanimanjem sem brala v Zarji dopis Ane Godlar iz Euclid, O., ker sem jaz hodila skoraj po poteh njenega obiska. Pozdrav vsem!

Smo v predzadnjem mesecu leta in kmalu bo 1972 šlo v zaton. Od mojega zadnjega poročila, smo mnogo doživeli. Mary Frank je dne 10. junija praznovala 81-letni rojstni dan. Njena družina; sinova Martin in John ter hčerka Mary so ji napravili presečenje, na katero so povabili sorodnike in prijatelje ter ožje znance. Slavje se je vršilo v Hauf Brau House, na 55 cesti.
V	resnici je bilo lepo, postrežba izvrstna. Tako so otroci razveselili njihovo ljubljeno mamo, da bo v veselju preživela svoje lepe jesenske dni. Tudi vse naše članice se pridružujemo z voščili: Bog naj Vam da zdravje, še mnogo
let! Mary Frank, je naša ustanovna članica. Na tem mestu se lepo zahvalim Albini Skočaj in njeni mami Christini, ki sta me peljale na to slavje.
Meseca julija si je zlomila nogo pri pomivanju verande pri hiši, naša častna mati, Mary Godec. Preselila se je k hčerki Frances na 3383 Belvoir Blvd., Beachwood, O.
Smrtni angel nam je zopet odpeljal dve članici. V avgustu je umrla Mary Zust, ki zapušča žalujočega moža, dva sinova, vnuke, brata in več sester. Sestra Pauline Močnik je tudi naša članica.
V	oktobru je preminula članica Mary Hočevar iz Way A ve. Zapušča moža, sinove in hčere. Naše sožalje prizadetim družinam, pokojnim pa večni mir in pokoj. Ohranile jih bomo v lepem spominu in v naših molitvah.
Globoko sožalje sestri Dolinar, naši prejšnji dolgoletni blagajničarki, ko je nepričakovano umrtl njen zet Hank Walters, mož njene hčerke Jossie. Zapustil je sina in dve hčerki. Naj mu bo lahka domača gruda. Mr. in Mrs. John Dolinar sta praznovala dne 25. sept., visoko 56 letnico poroke, pa je usoda prinesla žalost, ker je ravno zet Hank ležal na mrtvaškem odru. Zaupajmo v božjo voljo, da bodo prihodnje obletnice bolj vesele.
Za stailno sta odšla v Calif., Mr. in Mrs. John Koman, da bodo zopet skupno živele s sestro Jossie Bailey in z bratom Frankom. Jos. in Mary Koman sta že dolgo let naše članice, zato jima želimo da bi še mnoga leta srečne in zdrave preživele v sončni deželi Caiiforniji.
Operacijo je srečno prestala Carolina Mauser, toda je še vedno pod zdravniško oskrbo. Posebno je težko, ker je tudi njen mož J’ohn bolan, želimo vsem bolnim članicam ljubega zdravja. Iz bolnišnice se vrnila Catherine Giivar iz Cadwel Ave.
Hvala vsem tistim članicam, ki so pomagale s knjižicami, da je blagajna zgubila praznoto. Na zadnji seji dne 8. okt. smo osvojile sklep, da praznujemo božičnico prvo nedeljo v decembru, to je 3. dec. ob enih pop. v S.N.D. 5050 Stanley St., Maple Hts., O. Vsaka naj prinese darilo v vrednosti $2, da si izmenjamo med seboj. Pripeljite s seboj tudi mlajše. Pridite vse! Glavne jestvine bodo poravnane iz blagajne, pecivo pa, če katera želi prinesti.
Upam, da sem vse vključila v moje poročilo, če pa ni vse, naj se še katera druga oglasi, ker jaz tudi rajše čitam, kot pišem.

Zopet je eno poletje za nami in jesenska društvena delovanja so že v polnem teku. Matilda Cigolle je bila na počitnicah v Sloveniji, kjer se je srečna sestala z njeno sestro in drugimi sorodniki in to prvič. Tudi midve s sestro Stephanie Polutnik sva preživele 3 nepozabne tedne v domovini. Ker sem bila rojena na Vrhniki, katero sem zapustila kot 10 letno dekle, sem vedno gojila željo, da še enkrat vidim rodne kraje. Obiskale smo naše tete Ivano Kunstel, Ančko Jelovšek in Marijo Jelovšek ter več bratrancev in sestričen v Zaplani in Logatcu. Hodili smo po stezah in plezali po hribih ter se čudili kako smo mogli kot otroci preplaziti razne skale. Hodili smo skozi Močilnik in občudovali izvir Ljub-Ijance in Verd. Tudi na Vrhniki se vidi napredek in mnoge spremembe, to-da v trajnem spominu so mi lepi verzi slovenske pesmi: "Kje so tiste stezice,
ki so včasih bile ” in “Vse mine ...”
Obiskale smo čudovito lepote Slovenije na Bledu, Bohinju, Postojni in drugod. Slovenija je gotovo dežela krasnih naravnih lepot, vendar sem srečna, da sem državljanka dobre, stare Amerike, ki ima svoje vrednosti in lepote.
Naša podr. je imela okt. sejo na domu ses. Mary Kristin. Z Mary je bila so-gostiteljica njena sestra Sophie Ce-kuta. Udeležba je bila prav dobra in napravile smo načrte za kartno zabavo. Po seji sta nam postregle z okusnim prigrizkom ter se jima prav iz srca zahvaljujemo za gostoljubnost.
Kartna parti, ki je bila v Slovenskem Domu je bila zelo uspešna. Načelnica, Mary Maček se ni mogla udeležiti, ker je bila zadržana, toda ostali odbor je izvršil hvalevredno delo. Ms. Kristin, Svesko, Kren v kuhinji Ms. Cekuta, Dombrovski s tiketsi, Nettie in Rose Juvančič z vsesplošno pomočjo in mize Mary Selak ter podpisana z priljubljenimi igrami. Tillie Cigolle je lepo predstavila razne politične kandidate, ki so prišli nas pozdraviti in seveda se priporočati za glasove. Zahvala velja vsem za izvrstno opravljeno delo.
Za Božičnico imamo v načrtu večerjo ter izmenjavo daril. Na dec. seji običajno izberemo zaslužno mater leta.
Kren-ova družina je izgubila njihovo ljubo mamo Anno. Naše globoko sožalje vsej družini in pokojni večni pokoj.
Frances Juvančič je bila v Clevelandski kliniki ter želimo njej in vsem ostalim bolnim članicam hitro okrevanje. Naj Vas vse Bog blagoslovi.

Pišem par vrstic v našo priljubljeno Zarjo. Srečna sem, da sem se udeležile državne konvencije, ki se je vršila
v Slovenskem Narodnem Domu v Clevelandu. Hvaležna sem naši tajnici, F. Ulle, ki se je skorajžila, da je podala na pot. Sprva je rekla, da ni že dolgo vozila po Clevelandu, zato jo je skrbelo kako bo, ker je taka gneča po cestah. Toda ko smo se vračale nazaj v Pai-nesville, smo ji rekle, da boljše šofer-ke ne bi mogle najti in smo ji srčno hvaležne, da smo imele priliko iti na convention, kjer smo slišale dosti zanimivega. Vse uradnice so nam lepo govorile, sem se kar začudila, da Mrs. Leskovar govori tako lepo slovensko. Navzočih je bilo precej priletnih članic in smo vas z zanimanjem poslušale in se je lepo slišalo, ko ste rekla”. “Držimo slovenski jezik, da ne utihne naša lepa govorica v Ameriki!”.
Naša Slov. Ženska Zveza je lepa organizacija. Skušale bomo dobiti več novih članic, če ste vprašane, prosim ne odrecite, saj je zanimivo in podučno na naših sejah, ki se vršijo vsako tretjo sredo v mesecu. Nam je zelo lepo ko se zberemo in po seji igramo priljubljene igre, da pomagamo blagajni in na karte ne pozabimo. Sedaj končam, ker če bi od vsake podružnice bilo toliko pisanja, bi bilo preveč dela za našo urednico.

Menda tudi vam drugim članicam čas tako hitro teče naprej, kot meni, kot bi ga podil veter. Dan, teden, mesec in leto je proč kot v sanjah. Ko smo bili še mladi, nismo mislili, da čas tako hitro beži, ker mladost je komaj začetek človeškega življenja. Starost je drugačna, ko se življenje človeka nagiba k zatonu, zato se nam zdi, da leta kar prehitro minejo. Najbolj srečen je tisti človek, ki se vsaki dan veseli novega dneva. Kdor pa le doma sedi in premišljuje o preteklosti, si s tem sam greni življenje, poleg tega si lahko nakoplje še kakšno bolezen. Naš slovenski pregovor pravi bodi vesel in ti bo dobro na zemlji.
Zopet se nam približujejo prazniki in glavna seja. Vas vse vabim, da se udeležite naše letne seje, ker imamo za rešiti več važnih stvari v korist vseh. Seja se bo pričela točno ob 8 uri zvečer v sredo dne 13. dec. v St. Mary’s Lyceum, 910 Chestnut St., ki vam je vsem znan. Po seji bomo pa imele Christmas party in izmenjavo daril. For the first families of our land the Christmas season was a very favorite and special time. George and Martha Washington's first observance in the White House, or the President's House, as it was then known, set the tempo and spirit of this important holiday for 171 years. The feast was celebrated with ceremony and merry making. Although there was no tree, the family party with their grandchildren was especially enjoyed.
In 1805 the gaiety of the White House Christmas party was so great that "Thomas Jefferson was moved to play lively and appropriate tunes on his violin”. Dolly Madison, who hosted Jefferson’s 1805 gala, arranged the 1811 Christmas party for her husband President James Madison.
Andrew Jackson added gusto to the life of Washington society and took a great delight in Christmas. His French chef made frozen ices in the shape of familiar fruits, pine trees and toy animals to delight the young and old who attended his party in 1835. To six of his young relatives he told that Santa Claus had never visited him when he was a boy. The next morning the President’s secretary found “Old Hickory” in tears over a corncob pipe, a tobacco pouch, slippers, and trinkets which the children had stuffed into a stocking for him.
One Christmas Abraham Lincoln’s little son Tad invited a crowd of hungry youngsters into the White House to share his Christmas dinner. When the cook tried to shoo them off, boy’s father agreed that the visitors should stay.
Benjamin Harrison who came to the White House in 1889 considered Christmas "The most sacred religious festivail of the year”. He felt it was the duty of every Christian to make merry. In honor of his grandson Benjamin Harrison McKee he erected the Christmas tree and thus carried on his family’s old-fashioned custom.
President Theodore Roosevelt was a strong conservationist and thus he forbade the use of the Christmas tree in his house. Yet in 1901 his sons Archie and Quentin smuggled a tree into their closet decorating it with a

gift for every family member as well as for the dog, kitten and pony. This president who loved children tenderly will be remembered for many things, but most especially for the teddy bear named for him. A German import it made its first appearance under American Christmas trees more than sixty years ago.
"A New York importer, on a trip to Germany, paid a visit to Frau Mar-garette Steiff of Gingen, Wurtemburg, a bedridden invalid who made stuffed toys for her own children and a few to sell. In discussing toys with her, he showed her a cartoon from a Washington newspaper featuring one of Teddy Roosevelt’s recent bear hunts. Amused and inspired by the picture of the colorful Roosevelt standing over a small bear he had shot, Frau Steiff immediately created a jointed, stuffed toy, which she called a ‘Teddy bear”. When it was offered at the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1903, it topped every toy in sales, and within three years was a leading item on toy counters throughout the world”.
In 1923 Calvin and Grace Coolidge began the practice of lighting a gigantic, decorated spruce on the White House lawn. The spruce came from Coolidge’s native Vermont hills. The following year he officiated at a ceremony in Washington sponsored by the American Forestry Association to champion the use of living Christmas trees throughout the country. Since that time the annual ceremony became a vital and colorful part of the Christmas observances at the Capitol.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt annually celebrated Christmas Eve by reading Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and acting out all the parts.
In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower presided over the nation’s first Pageant of Peace now an annual custom. He threw a switch lighting the first national Christmas tree located at the Ellipse, the playing field between the White House and the Washington Monument.
Besides the usual holiday decorations used in the first family's home, Mrs. John F. Kennedy began the practice in 1961 of displaying a lovely creche with 17th century Neopolitan figures in the East Room.
“The fragrance of evergreens filled the halls and holly was everywhere throughout the house, all around the great light fixtures and in large bowls on the tables. Everybody enjoyed the decorations especially the green 20-foot Christmas tree in the Blue Room.
Our own tree was covered with icicles and snowflakes and gingerbread men, toy drummers, strings of pop corn (real) and cranberries (not real) and topped with the star that had been on Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s tree back in the early 1940s”. So wrote Mrs. Lyndon Johnson of their White House decorations in 1969.
Describing Christmas 1971 at the White House Mrs. Richard Nixon said the rooms are so full of beauty that they just needed a little dressing up with fresh flowers and plants—pines, first and spruce—giving the rooms a lovely aroma. The huge Christmas tree was decorated with two ornaments for each state and all the mantels held white or red poinsettias and potted garlands of ivy.
Throughout the years the lovely decorations in the White House set the mood for its many gatherings of family, friends, officials, diplomats, as well as groups of needy children.
