Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 45/53 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 5. 11. 2017 31. Nedelja MED LETOM 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Zadnja postaja pa je pokopališče Our Lady of the Angels, kjer smo z molitvijo začeli ob 5h popoldne. 474 | VESTNIK 2017 VESTNIK 2017 | 475 476 | VESTNIK 2017 VESTNIK 2017 | 477 St Martin's Day - Martinovanje - History of Home Made Wine Winners Home Made WINE Year 1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize 2017 ? ?? ??? 2016 Frank Novak Elizabeth Petek Štefan Gašpar 2015 Stranko Petek Štefan Gašpar Gizela Hauzar- Ivan Miketič 2014 Ivan Miketič Sidonia Drvarič Gizela Hauzar 2013 Sidonia Drvarič Kari Ferko Karol Ferko 2012 Sidonia Drvarič Stan Petek Sidonia Drvarič 2011 Ludvik Hull Stane Novak Ivan Miketič 2010 Family Hull Janko Demšar Ignac Prša 2009 Karol Ferko Ignac Prša Franc Pelcar 2008 Zoltan Gergyek Janko Demšar Jože G rožni k 2007 Franc Pelcar Ludvik Hull Sidonia Drvarič 2006 Sidonia Drvarič Štefan Gonza Sidonia Drvarič 2005 Matija Vlasič Ludvik Hull Janko Demšar 2004 Sidonia Drvarič Sidonia Drvarič Franc Pelcar 2003 Rudi Setej Ignac Prša Ludvik Hull 2002 Jožef Jerič Zoltan Gergyek Franc Pelcar 2001 Franc Pelcar Ludvik Hull Stane Novak 2000 Ignac Prša Ignac Horvat Zoltan Gergyek/Stanko Novak 1999 Ignac Korošec Florijan Miklavčič Ivan Vegelj 1998 Slavko Slobodnik Florijan Miklavčič Zoltan Gergyek 1997 Ludvik Hull Dan Harrington Angie Harrington 1996 Brzan Cogan Ani Jeraj Vinci DiFrancisco 1995 Daniel Miklavčič Franc Virag Florijan Miklavčič 1994 Ernest Zrim Angela Gričnik Zoltan Gergyek 1993 Ivan Vegelj Kari Ferko Ludvik Hull 1992 Dan Miklavčič Ludvik Hull Bob Patchett 1991 G. First Reading Malachi 1:14 - 2:2. 8-10 A warning is sounded for all in authority, not to betray their trust. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 2:7-9. 13 Paul reminds us that the Gospel is a living message from God. Gospel Matthew 23:1-12 Beware the temptations of power, Jesus says. Live as servants to one another. "God's message and not some human thinking." Illustration A teacher reminded his students of an old joke about education. "You know the definition of education?" he said to them. "It is when the notes of the teacher become the notes of the student without passing through the head of either of them." It is a serious point as well as a humorous one. We can fool ourselves that we are learning things simply because we are writing them down. But if we never take the time to think about what we write, then we have learned nothing except how to be parrots. The same thing is true today about dialogue between people. We think we know what dialogue is and we probably think that we practise dialogue, when in fact all we are doing is talking. You talk and then I talk, but we don't quite listen. Then we argue and then we fight. Many people think that dialogue has been tried and found wanting, and so they stop believing in it. It is seen as more important today to 480 | VESTNIK 2017 speak your version of the truth loudly and to persuade others to follow your way. Our modern world has even been called a "post-truth society". Since no one can agree on the truth, some people think it is better to develop your own propaganda and to make the images and the soundbites that will get you what you want. Modern media and politicians are very aware of these powerful forces for shaping the world. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel Jesus speaks to us about the failings of the scribes and Pharisees, the leaders of his time. What he has to say is valid for all time and for all in authority. Government and authority are worthy of our respect and cooperation, but we need to be awake to the weaknesses of human nature. People in power can become uncaring of others, especially of those who are poor, and people in power can become addicted to the advantages and privileges that come with the job. What is true of those in public office is also true of ourselves in our own little areas of power. How often parents or teachers can become authoritarian in attitude towards the children in their care. How often people in the workplace can become rigid and rude in dealing with fellow workers. And the same can all too easily become true within the Church too, in the relationship between clergy and people. It is easy for individuals to become dictators in their own backyard. Jesus gives emphasis to not bossing others. We are to be servants of one another. "At your service" is a great motto and a great attitude to have in life. It encourages us to be receptive of other people and not so self-obsessed. St Paul applauds the Thessalonians because they accepted the Gospel as a message from God. They listened to it and took it to heart. Application Pope Francis asks us to consider the conversation in John's Gospel between Jesus and the woman at Jacob's well. It is a perfect dialogue. How carefully Jesus listens. How little he interrupts. How much he allows the woman to say who she is. How Jesus takes his time with this woman in order that they may both understand one another. They trade observations and comments, sharing them and not knocking down what the other person says. In that meeting the first thing that is achieved is a sense of honour and respect between the parties. Differences of view and differences of opinion are not a problem. No one is trying to force their view onto the other. No one is trying to dominate or to win the argument. It is matter of finding the way to the truth that both can share. Too often we interrupt and shout down the voice of others because we fear their views will clash or destroy our own. The Gospel, St Paul reminds us, is not some human thinking. It is not a particular philosophy or social theory that we can agree or disagree about. The Gospel is a message from the living God. It is a challenge to us every day of our lives. The challenge for us is to practise what is taught to us by the Lord. It is a living power that will purify our hearts and heal our relationships with one another - if we will allow it to enter our head and our heart.
