St. Vitus Slovenian School pre-school and kindergarten children, taught by Louise Strauss and Tončka Sršen, put on a play about the birth of Jesus at “Kajenje.” This is a Slovenian tradition where the rosary is prayed and the house is blessed.
Nevia Avzlahar, Blažena Rihtar, Helena and Mario Perčič were four of many who assembled baked goods in boxes for the elderly shut-ins in the Slovenian community. They assembled 77 boxes of krofe, poticas, and various cookies to those who could not bake for themselves. To put a smile on the faces of others at Christmas motivates this group to bake traditional food and deliver them each year. Christmas is all about giving and that spirit lives in the Slovenian community.

Important Announcement
For the last few years, more money has been going out of the American Home Publishing Co., Inc., than has been coming in. As is the problem with most newspapers, advertising revenue has been decreasing, while expenses have been increasing. Heating costs for the month of December was $1,600. We have to sell a lot of newspapers at 70 cents to cover that one expense. The cost of mailing this newspaper has been going up as everyone has been hit with the cost of increased postal rates.
Most newspapers and magazine-type publications owned by multi-million dollar entities that print a Slovenian section have limited their printing to once a month or less. Nevertheless, we who are not supported by any organization, have continued to publish almost every week; last year we came out with 44 issues, which is truly an amazing accomplishment.
Publishing the Ameriška Domovina (American Home) newspaper has been mainly a work of love. We are thankful for all the contributing writers who submit their work free of charge.
One way to continue operations is to cut down expenses. Beginning with the month of February, we will be publishing the Ameriška Domovina (American Home) newspaper only the first three weeks of each month. Therefore we will be cutting down on postal cost, which is our biggest expense, and the use of paper, aluminum plates, film, and save wear and tear of the printing press, the maintenance of which is another great expense.
We are deeply grateful to all our loyal readers, quite a few of whom have been with us for over 50 years. And we do appreciate those who add something extra to their $35.00 annual subscription, and those who regularly advertise and submit a holiday greeting on Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Easter.
We hope you understand our predicament, and trust you will continue to support this interesting and informative newspaper which has been in existence for 108 years, the oldest Slovenian newspaper in the world!

Home Filled With Kids

This past weekend our home was filled with kids, our kids and our grandkids. The reason in part was be-cau of the civ;, rights weekend, a long weekend for my grandchildren in North Carolina, giving them time to drive up here and spend a couple of days with family. We also had a big spaghetti dinner on Sunday, with three loaves of French bread, laced with garlic and butter and toasted in the oven until hot and tangy with that great garlic flavor. Therese baked chocolate, peach and lemon meringue pies for her brood to sugar-coat our spaghetti-filled stomachs. It all disappeared in one day.
All of the delicious food on that Sunday supplied the energy Monday as sisters Mary and Sue shopped for bridesmaids dresses, or tried to come up with ideas for the gowns they will wear when they are in their sister Monica’s bridal party.
I	did forget to mention that Monica and Ray will marry oh Oct. 14lh and she wants all of her sisters in her bridal party. As I said, Mary and Sue shopped, then got on the phone with their sister Carolyn and came up with a few ideas. First you must understand Monica is our youngest - against her wishes. She never understood, if her mother had another baby, she would have been an or-
phan. I would never have been here to walk down the aisle on that upcoming beautiful October day of her marriage to Ray.
Her sister Sue is 12 years older, Carolyn (5 years older
and Mary is 16 years older.
Age means nothing to Monica. Sisters don’t age, they are always the same.
Their bridal dresses will be long sleeved and have turtle necks; no wrinkles showing. The fact that Monica’s matron of honor and the other bridesmaids are friends from school which means YOUNG. Not to worry. My daughters are beautiful and I love the idea of Monica having her sisters at her side on her wedding day. Monica’s brother Mike and sister Mary were her godparents. This time Mary has it easy, she won’t have to hold Monica, who is the same height. Monica will be walked down the aisle by her mother and father. I like that.
My solution to the bridesmaids, my daughters, is to mention to the people in church as they walk down the aisle, “We helped our parents raise Monica and that is why we look so old.” Who wouldn’t understand? Now that is settled. We can all enjoy looking forward to Monica and Ray’s wedding. If you just would say a little prayer that the bridesmaids don’t age any more, that is until the wedding.

The first meeting of the new year on Thursday, Jan. 5 has come and gone. If you attended, you will have to agree that as far as meetings go, this was really a good one.
With the sound of the gravel, President Dan Reiger opened the first meeting of the year by calling on our dear Father Vic Cimperman to lead us in prayer. Father Vic attends every meeting along with his sister Mary. Of course, they are both so very lucky since they only have to take the “heavenly express” elevator from the third to first floor of St. Vitus Village, and like magic, they are there.
A great presentation of minutes was given by Secretary Daniella Avsec. We were able to “relive” the previous meeting all over again. Treasurer Ray Gobec should run for office of Ohio Treasurer. Our state would have no problems keeping the books straight. By the way, not only is Ray good with the figures, he can also bake up a storm. The pineapple dessert he baked from scratch was truly delicious.
Missing from the scene was Vice President Josie Perpar, but nevertheless, we enjoyed her presence with the wonderful roast beef she sent over for us. Her private ‘chef,’ sister Jean prepared it. Know that we truly sa-

vored every bite, heartfelt thanks from all of us.
Membership Chairperson Albina Pozelnik brought a bit of belated Holiday Spirit by passing out gifts of boxed chocolates to everyone. She is our “surprise lady,” every meeting she surprises us with special gifts. It is a fun part of the evening. Thank you, Albina.
Chatting up a storm were Bemie Sajovec, Babe Cizel and Mary Lunder. Center of attention was Ed Arhar who was going “in" for back surgery. He asked questions about “who knows what,” and as you read this, his surgery is over. He should now be in rehab at the Cleveland Clinic. We were all praying for him. His lovely wife, Annie, is all smiles these days and for a good reason.
Florence Hotujac was busy preparing the coffee that was to accompany the delicious “Perpar Roast Beef.” Special note, Florence has lost her taste buds and is not able to enjoy the various tastes of foods. Every meeting she worries if the coffee is strong enough, etc., but it always is just fine.
With the beverages there was Daniella’s wonderful Slovenian kislo kromper. Ummm. Plus all the mouthwatering goodie:; everyone brought in. What a .'cast and we enjoyed every mouthful. There was plenty, enough for seconds plus a ‘care package’ or two, to boot.

Our next quarterly meeting will be on the first Thursday in April, the 6th. And if you have been ‘toying’ with the idea of attending a meeting, please make it a reality; you won’t be sorry.

How I Dated a Terrific Millionaire

NEW YORK, NY - At a typically crowded and noisy singles party at the Tavern on the Green, the restaurant in Central Park, dazzling with a flourishing garden and twinkling trees at night, I met Paul Chin, a Chinese-* American. Casually dressed, a devotee of Gap, wearing an open collar striped shirt with off-white pants, Paul stood out in the crowd as the only Asian-looking man present. Slowly, he inched his way in my direction.
“Come here often?” Paul asked, holding a glass of scotch and soda, and winking at me.
I	nodded, “Yeah, sometimes. Jasmine Bojic is the executive pastry chef here. She makes me laugh when she told me that she loves her job so much she is married to the pastry.”
Paul laughed and we both laughed.
“It turns out that Jasmine has a traditional husband and a daughter, as well as 80 pastry cooks working for her. She regularly travels to Paris to learn more about pastries. Did you know that Tavern on the Green serves 800 desserts per day?”
“Really?” Paul asked.
I nodded again, sipping my cranberry and vodka. “Did you know that Tavern on the Green was built in 1870 as a rural Victorian Gothic structure housing sheep until 1934?”
We discussed a number of subjects, like the beauty of Central Park, the fun of traveling to Europe off-season.
Then I agreed to dinner.
A few days later, when Paul called to confirm the dinner invitation, I asked him about work. “Police department,” he told me. Hmm, how interesting, I thought.
He asked me about my work. In general, when I tell people that I work in accounting and finance, their usual response is ‘Oh, how boring.' But Paul was impressed and asked a lot of questions.
When he came to pick me
up, there was an expensive sports car, a silver Corvette, parked in front of my building. I cracked a joke, “Hey, you did not have to rent such an expensive car just to impress me.”
He laughed and said that actually the car was his, not rented.
As soon as I entered his Corvette, I spotted a whole box of cigars, which explained the unpleasant odor around Paul.
“These aren’t Cuban cigars, are they?”
Paul smiled, shifting gears, accelerating without worrying about a speeding ticket since he had a special police sticker. “Yes; they are Cuban, named ‘La Gloria Cu-bana. ’ They are the best quality, topnotch.”
“But Cuban cigars are illegal due to the US embargo.” “Well, I travel a lot. I bought them in Hong Kong.” I kept wondering where Paul’s money came from. Even though he said he was a college graduate, he kept insisting that his job was clerical in the Police Department. It seemed strange that a college graduate would do clerical work. I thought to myself, something isn’t right here.
At the same time, I started to have fantasies of how incredible it would be to have some extra money to make my life comfortable. Along with the rest of my family, I had been hungry plenty of times when we lived in communist Yugoslavia. To be rich was so much a part of the American dream.
From then on, during dinner and our subsequent phone conversations, I kept asking Paul about his work in greater detail, “What division of the Police Department do you work for?”
My mind was working overtime,	speculating
whether Paul was part of internal police investigations. Shaking criminals down? I read in the newspaper how some officers were found guilty of stealing illegal drugs and reselling them while keeping the cash.
Paul kept minimizing the importance of his work, waving his hand, clearly not willing to talk about it. But I kept turning the conversation back to his work, wanting to know if he was in narcotics.
“No,” he said. Explaining repeatedly that he did not have a rank, nor was he a police officer. Rather, he only worked as a clerk in the office at police headquarters.
As we kept dating for months, more evidence that he was rich surfaced. He lived on Fifth Avenue near the Washington Square and traveled extensively, mostly to Asia and Europe, simply taking unpaid time off from work.
Soon after we met, he asked me where I wanted to live. I blurted out, “Hawaii, where I spent my vacation once.”
“Great place,” he agreed and said, “I want to live in Hawaii as well.”
He kept taking me on very expensive dates, like the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor at Rockefeller Plaza. I loved that place with breathtaking views of the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge, through its floor-to-ceiling windows. They certainly had the best salmon served with horseradish crust, roasted red beef couscous, shaved fennel and lemon-dill remoulade.
But on my dates with Paul,
I never had any fun, deeply suspicious of this man. I kept him at a distance, only meeting him in public places, as I did not trust him.
Finally, I said to him. “You have to tell me more about yourself.”
Paul hesitated, raised his eyebrows and looked down at his plate of risotto with sugar snap peas and prosciutto. Annoyed at my question, he finally said, “My family is very ordinary, working class Chinese family now living in Flushing, Queens. My father is the definite head of the household. As in Chinese tradition, my mother has nothing to say about anything. But it

was my mother who received some land, which happens to be in the area of Hong Kong. The land there is worth millions. We sold the land and now all of us in the family are millionaires. Except now, we don’t know how to handle the money.”
My mouth dropped open from surprise. I gulped down a glass of ice cold mineral water and listened. Paul shrugged his shoulders and sipped expensive wine, Casa Lapostolle. After a couple of minutes he said, “My father still goes to work in a factory in Chinatown. My mother used to work in a factory, but now she stays home to cook and clean. One of my brothers opened a liquor store in Chicago.”
Since I worked in the finance department of an investment firm, this man falsely believed that I knew how to handle an investment worth millions of dollars.
Shifting his weight uncomfortably, Paul said, “I postponed having this conversation with you for as long as I could. It’s not nice, but it is the truth. My father hates white people. He thinks Chinese people are superior. My ex-girlfriend, who was white like you... well, uh, my fa-
ther prohibited me from bringing her or any white woman home.”
Stunned, I could barely squeak, “What did you do?” Shrugging his shoulders, clearly nervous, lowering his voice, Paul whispered, “I
only like white, blond and blue-eyed women. I am not attracted to Chinese women.”
With my bleached blond hair, I fit that category. ^ It was my turn to explain § to Paul, point blank, about my family. “I was curious about you. I could sense there was something you were not telling me. Now it’s my turn and it’s very painful to me to tell you the truth.
My family background is deeply dysfunctional and my own father was full of hate towards his own family, his wife and children. He was a violent alcoholic and we were a burden to him. After my horrible childhood in Slovenia and Croatia, I could never enter into a relationship where nothing but hate was to be continued and received from your father.”
We shared a dessert of chocolate mousse and then
politely shook hands and said goodbye.

4 Mlakar Walks Down Memory Lane

Well, Ray is back and after the Jan. 12 publication and me making a current photo shoot, now my readers know what “The Little Old Man” looks like. Just in case any of you were wondering what I whispered into Santa’s ear, it really did not do any good •for I think it went in one ear and out the other. When Santa seen a Little Old Man sitting on his lap, perhaps right then and there he figured I was not wrapped tight or perhaps too tight. Speaking of Santa, you know I get to see him at church every Sunday and he asked me how my Christmas was. I told him, “You should know, you never showed up at my house.” (Ray is still waiting for an electric train set; Santa is still waiting for Ray to be a good boy.)
Well, for one thing, we have to admit that for a few short days we had some great weather and I guess now we are paying for it, for the cold weather is back along with the snow and ice. Look on the bright side, two more months and it will be the first day of spring (we hope.)
Guess I could go on and write about my phone being out for two days along with the computer since I am also hooked up with SBC as my Internet carrier. I am sure you have heard the story time and again from others. You go to a pay station to
report that your phone is down and they try to get you to learn how to play the piano. You know, press one, or press two; if that is busy, press 5, keeping mind your call is important to us, that is why we are not answering your phone call now with a real live person. What can I say, “St. Peter, we need your help for SBC is short handed.” Well, I got the phone fixed finally, but then everything comes to he who waits, and waits, and waits.
I did manage to get out to the East Side Slovenian butchers for some good Slovenian smoked sausage to hang up in the bam to dry and if the snow keeps coming down, my hopes are going up that I can convince “Happy Harry” (my Cairn Terrier) to go to the bam to bring in the dried Slovenian sausages. But knowing Harry, he will probably stay in the bam to both keep warm and have some lunch and finish off the sausages. One really can’t send a dog out for sausages and expect him to bring them back. Hell, that is as bad as whispering to Santa that you expect him to bring you an Electric Train. They don’t make Santa’s or dogs like they used to.
Well, so far I have not gotten back to “Mlakar’s Walk Down Memory Lane,” but then I am not getting any younger, and since I am so far down in the column now, no use writing about the sad
story of Mlakar’s walk. Ray, how about closing instead and give someone else a break to write and give your readers a couple of jokes. To tell the truth, Brother Frank Mlakar, in spite of his own problems, always seems to cheer me up from time to time with his timely jokes. Are you ready?
Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the elderly widow and asked, “How old was your husband?” “98. Two years older than me.” “So you’re 96?” the undertaker commented. . She said, “Hardly wroth going home, isn’t it?”
Well, one last one. A 97-year-old man goes into the doctor’s office and says, “Doc, I want my sex drive lowered.” “Sir,” replied the doctor, you’re 97. Don’t you think your sex drive is all in your head?” “You’re durn right it is,” replied the old man. “That’s why I want it lowered.”
Well, that is it and as you can see I am writing about jokes of folks in my age category. In closing, may your phone always work so you never have to contact SBC, for let’s face it, at our age, it is too late to take up piano lessons... Press this, press that. In any case, May the good Lord bless and watch over all of you and keep you in good health. This is Santa’s worst nightmare signing off.

Gorjanc - A mountaineer, highlander. One who lives on or near the crest of a. mountain. One who is daring and climbs to the top, or takes chances.
Gornik - One who lives on a mountain, from the Polish word “gora.” A nickname for someone who aims to be the “top man.” Ambitious Gorshe - A place name for someone who lives in an area overgrown with gorse (bristly and rough hedge of hawthorn.)
Grebenc, Grebenjar - An
occupational name for a carder (comber) of rough cloth. A user of a metal 'comb or brush or raising the nap to prepare for spinning.
Hočevar - A nickname from the Old French “ho-chier,” to shake the dice. One who takes chances on life, or one who survived an accident by a piece of luck.
Hrvatin, Hrovath - One who came from Croatia or Hrvatsko, a Roman province in Pannonia in the seventh century and then settled by the Magyars (Hungarians) and then by the Croats.
Ipavec - A brick paver or road builder. Also, a smooth talker or one who makes the way easier for family or friends.
Jakše,- From the Hebrew name “Yaakov” (Jakob), the twin brother of Esau. The name means “May God now protect the supplanter.” One who takes over.
Jereb - A partridge or a hunter of the bird. A willingness to fly high. Or one in charge of the hunters.
Kaifesh, Kajfez - One who is in charge of church candles. One who makes sure the church candles are lit and extinguished at each
Mass. Candles were very expensive since the wax was imported from the East.

Bojan Križaj is considered the best Slovenian skier of all time. He was bom on 3. January 1957 and three years later, he was already skiing on a small hill behind his home apartment block in Tržič.
At the age of 18, he became European Youth Champion, and within the next few years, started to win the first World Cup points.
He won the World Cup eight times. In 1987, he won the Slalom Crystal Globe. He also competed at the Olympics in Innsbruck (1976), Lake Placid (1980) and Sarajevo (1984). He was Slovenian Sportsman of the Year no less than five times (1975, 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1987).
The times of his success in the World Cup were unforgettable. When “our Bojan” hit the slopes, Slovenian factories paused and classes stopped in schools. This may seem like a fantasy today, but for many Slovenes, it is still a warm memory of times past. With Bojan Križaj, three quarters of Slovenians became avid “indoor winter sportspeople,” or in other words, avid supporters of winter sports on TV,
with a lesser number putting on skis and imitating him outdoors at lower temperatures. The euphoria also brought about the immense success of a lottery which collected money for Slovenian skiing.
His success also influenced pop music: everybody sang, “We are all skiing, Bojan and us,” and the Slovenian singer Zoran Predim sang with the Lačni Franz group: “We have no fear if the skiers are with us.”
Unfortunately Bojan had bad luck at the Olympics. When he put down his skis and entered the finish on foot accompanied by immense cheering at his last competition in Saal-bach in 1988, his collection of numerous sports medals did not include the coveted Olympic one.
Like his greatest competitor, Ingemar Stenmark, Bojan Križaj used Elan skis exclusively to compete. It is therefore not surprising that he works for this company today. He is manager of the Elan competition teams and is in charge of the development of professional racing skis of Elan.
He still spends a lot of time on skis as skiing is still the sport he enjoys most. He does not perceive it as a sport, but as a daily need.

Blueberry Upside-Down Cake
not thawed 1/4 cup sugar q y . .ti. .
1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 package (6.5 or 7 ounces) muffin mix, any flavor 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/3 cup low-fat milk 1 container (6 ounces) fat-frec blueberry yogurt
Preheat oven to 350°; spray an 8-inch round baking pan with cooking spray; set aside. Rinse blueberries with cold water; pat dry. In a medium bowl, stir sugar with cornstarch; add blueberries, toss; spread in prepared pan. In a medium bowl, blend muffin mix, egg and milk until batter is slightly lumpy (do not over mix); spread over berries. Bake until center springs back when pressed, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool 5 minutes; invert onto a plate. Serve with yogurt.

Peel bananas, cut into 1-inch diagonal slices, and add to ■ skillet, cover and cook about 1 minute (just until bananas are i heated.) - Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Here it is the end of January and before you know it, Spring will be just around the corner. Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and will stay healthy in 2006.
Waterloo Pensioners ended 2005 with a delicious Christmas dinner and a fun-filled afternoon. Entertainment was by the Orlandi’s (Bob and Shellie); they were excellent. Not only is their musical ability great, but they are true entertainers 5 keeping the audience en-«s thused throughout the after-< noon with much laughter and getting the members involved.
At our annual meeting in November, the following officers were elected: President: Pat Nevar; Vice President:	Eileen Markusic;
Treasurer: Dorothy Gorjup; Recording Secretary: Grace Marinch; Auditors JoAnn Jamison, Eleanor Godec and Ken Zalar.
We would like to thank the following members who graciously volunteer their services throughout the year: Eleanor Godec, Jo Minello, Ann Wolf, who are in charge of making and serving the sandwiches, etc. JoAnn Jamison who is our Sunshine Lady and takes cares of the attendance book. Trouble With Spray Cans

Like death and taxes, you can always count on a spray can to run out of gas before the can’s empty. Yeah, I’ve tried everything, even soaking the can in hot water to increase the pressure. But at best, I’m rewarded with an extra dribble.
With spray paint, unless the can is almost upright, you’ll not get a properly atomized spray. Yet, on the can, they print this advice: “To prevent clogging and to clear spray tip after each use, turn can upside down and spray until only clear gas is emitted.” It’s a plot, I tell you. Do this after a couple of touchj-ups, and you’ll be lucky to have enough gas to spray, half the paint. Forget their advice. Instead, wipe the nozzle with paint thinner and press a pin into the little hole after each use. If this works, you might get to use three-quarters of the paint.
Shaving cream is a big gyp. The brand I’m using consistently runs out of gas with half a tank of soap. Oh, it still expels the cream, but it’s no longer foamy. A puddle of drippy liquid doesn’t
do the job. You can heft the weight of the remains, and feel it slopping around, but no matter how long you shake, there’ll be no foam. Here’s a case where the gas not only forces the soap from the can, it also has to aerate it into a foam. If it drips, it’s no good.
We use lots of wasp and hornet spray in Florida. It’s supposed to shoot a jet 20 feet or more which is a great idea, especially if you are allergic to their sting. Works fine when the can is new, but when part of it is gone, you have to aim high and get lucky with the trajectory. Most of it is wasted, and never hits the wasp. If you want a good laugh, catch me with the garage door open. I’m often trying to kill a wasp that’s looking for a place to nest behind the junk on the shelves. It’ll never settle when it’s being stalked, so I’m trying to kill it on the fly. Invariably, I lay a jet stream of this oily mess over the length of a clean car. It wipes off with paper towels, but leaves a residue that needs soap and water. You know from the solvent smell that it’s going to take
off the wax. And the wasp is still alive. I can hear it laughing.
In my garage, probably leaking gas as I write, are spray cans of oil, silicone, insecticide, glass cleaner, enamel, lacquer, and urethane. Because they’ll run ■ out of gas, most will go into the trash when they’re half full. And I haven’t even looked in the kitchen and bath.

In remembrance of Stane Šušteršič
Rev. Victor N. Tome
The Reverend Victor N. Tome, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Mary Parish (Collinwood), Cleveland, died on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the home of his niece, after receiving the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments. Father Tome had been in failing health for some time.
Victor N. Tome, the son of the late Michael and Catherine (nee Kralj) Tomc, was born on Oct. 29, 1916, in Cleveland. He was educated at Saint Vitus Elementary School, Cathedral Latin High School, John Carroll University, and Saint Mary Seminary, Cleveland.
On Dec. 18, 1943, Bishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.
Father Tome’s first assignment was as assistant at Saint Mary parish, Collinwood. On July 1, 1946, he was transferred to Saint Vitus Parish Cleveland, where he served until January 7, 1955, when he was appointed to St. Christine Parish, Euclid. On June 21, I960, Father Tome was transferred to Holy Family Parish, Parma, where he ministered until Nov. 16, 1965, when he returned to St. Mary Parish, Collinwood.
Father Tome served as an assistant at St. Mary parish until April 1, 1967, when he was appointed pastor of the Parish. Father Tome served a full 20 years as pastor there before retiring as Pastor Emeritus on April 1,1987.
A review of Father Tome’s priestly assignments confirms his many years of ministry on behalf of the Catholic Slovenian community. He actively supported the Slo-vene Home for the Aged (SHA) on Neff Road and sponsored yearly venison dinners for the benefit of the SHA.
Father Tome had a deep devotion to Saint John Eosco, and in his younger days devoted himself to Working with the yoOth of his Parish assignments.
As pastor, Father Tome worked hard for St. Mary Parish, taking it through the changes of Vatican II and paying off the debt resulting from the construction of the church.
In 1970 he was appointed Vice Postulator for the cause of Bishop Frederic Baraga, the first bishop of the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan, who was known for his work among the Native American peoples.
The wake was held on Tuesday, January 24 at the Zele Funeral Home, 452 E. 152 St., from 5 to 9 p.m. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the body was transferred to St. Mary Church, 15519 Holmes Ave. Singing of Vespers began at 3 p.m., and continued until 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial is celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church. Bishop Anthony M. Pilla will be the principal celebrant. Bishop A. Edward Pevec will be the homilist. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland.

Requiescat in pace, Stane. Rest in peace.
There is an empty chair now - literally and figuratively - in many an Ameri-can-Slovenian home in the Washington area. It’s the chair that was reserved for Stane, until Sunday, when the Lord called him to eternal rest.
Ever since I was asked to say a few words in English to help us all remember Stane’s life, the realization has grown that words - in whatever language - are inadequate to the task.
I am a second generation American-Slovenian and Stane was my friend. He was my friend for most of the past 40 years - ever since I met him soon after I moved to the Washington, D.C. area from the Mid-West.
As those years went by I found myself more and more involved with the Washing-ton-area Slovenian community. And everywhere - there was Stane. Always full of energy, ideas, and sugges-

tions. With his quiet determination he demonstrated every day that you need not be in a high position to be a truly good man, even in Washington. And he was a truly eood man.
With his resonant voice, he helped anchor the Washington Slovenian singing group from its earliest days. Along with others of his generation, he quietly helped me learn where ‘prvi bass’ (first bass) fits into the Slovenian scheme of song.
Many times he led the congregation in singing Slovenian hymns at the monthly Mass at the Slovenian chapel in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
He was an active member of the committee that shepherded addition of the Slovenian Chapel of Our Lady of Brezje to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in 1971, nearly 35 years ago. He also was an active supporter of, and participant in the anniversary celebrations of the chapel’s dedication, and in the Baraga Days celebration that coincided with the 25th anniversary of the chapel’s dedication.
He was an active member of the Washington area Slovenian Heritage Committee, which for many years put on “Know Your Heritage” evenings every spring.
From its first days he was an active member of the Bishop Baraga Society of the American Slovenian Catholic Union. He served many years, and until his death, as an auditor of the society. At the society’s annual St. Nicholas celebrations he al-
ways provided the ‘mood music’ - recordings of appropriate Slovenian carols and hymns. He even did it this year despite his deteriorating health.
But perhaps the characteristic that was most noteworthy about Stane was his kindness - his unassuming, indiscriminate and universal kindness.
For example, until his last days he willingly and eagerly chauffeured many in our community who no longer n> can drive themselves, wher- § ever they needed to go: to church, to the doctor, shopping, and more.
For many years he was the volunteer tour guide for singing groups, students and others who came to Washington from Slovenia and other Slovenian communities in the U.S., Canada and elsewhere. He arranged accommodations, meals, and transportation and personally guided the tours, sometimes spending the better part of a week doing so.
Every Easter he distributed plastic eggs stuffed with little candies to the youngsters, oldsters and those in between at the Slovenian Mass. On Palm Sunday he fashioned small crosses from palms and passed those out at the Slovenian chapel, too.
While Stane did not have a family in the traditional sense - a spouse and children and all that goes with it - in a sense the entire community was his family. We loved him. We miss him. We will not forget him.

Slovenian Traditions Recalled in Rock Springs

I was discharged out of the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, TX during the first week of October, 1952. I shipped my big Army bag home by bus, then with a little hand bag, I started my travels.
I was young and adventurous so in uniform, I started to hitchhike out west. I got through Texas and New Mexico, then to Prescott, Arizona. Then I headed north toward Provo, Utah.
At that time people were very friendly to servicemen. Some wanted to take me to their homes for food and sleep, but in Arizona some cowboy picked me up and we rode together for 8 to 10 hours. He bought meals and was happy to have company while driving. In Provo, Utah I took the road to Rock Springs, Wyoming. I was in Rock Springs visiting all relatives of Pivik, Mivšek and Tony Rudolph. From Rock Springs, they put me on a train to Pittsburgh.

by Stephanie Haberkorn Daily Rocket-Miner staff reporter ROCK SPRINGS, WY - It was a place where residents gathered for dances, weddings, wine festivals and to have a good time - it was the Slovenski Dom. Even though the Dom is now an art and gift gallery, it still holds memories of the past.
The Slovenski Dom was constructed in 1913 and was used as a public hall and meeting place for several Slovenian-American fraternal lodges, according to Lola Moore.
This building is a symbol of ethnic diversity because it was the only one in Wyoming. The building remains close to its original condition and is still owned by the same organization. Even though the English name is Slovenian National Home, the building is still called the Slovenski Dom.
The building cost $9,440 to construct and was financed through the sale of building bonds. According to information provided by Moore, the exterior was replaced in the 1980s with siding. In the past, Slovenians, Croatians and Italians hosted meetings there.
Moore said working in the historic building is interesting because of its history. She said she hears a lot of stories from residents who used to attend dances at the Dom.
Once the building was completed, it became a
community center and helped preserve ethnic identities. It opened for the first time on Dec. 31, 1913, which was just in time for a New Year’s Eve dance.
Rudy Pivik, acting Slovenski Dom lodge president, said when the Dom first opened the Slovenians would host dances and perform in costumes.
“I’ve been a custodian there for years when the bar opened,” Pivik said.
Of all the activities at the Dom, Pivik remembers the wine festival the most. He said it always took place in October and it was something he and other residents looked forward to each year. This festival was known as the Grape Festival or Wine Arbor Festival.
During the festival, Pivik said the Dom was decorated with fruit, including apples, oranges and grapes. The fruit was placed on a screen that was strung above the dance floor. Fall leaves were placed in the middle of the dance floor and residents danced around the leaves. Pivik said residents raked up leaves from their yards and then scattered them on the dance floor.
“We always had a great time down there,” Pivik said. “You’d be dancing in leaves all night.”
Benches were placed along the Dorn’s walls so there was room for dancing, while the band played all night long on the stage.
“We had a great time,” Pivik said. “We had a lot of fun.”
While at the festival, Pivik said he would dress up in Slovenian attire and perform cultural dances for others.
During the wine festival, a person called, “The Keeper of the Grapes,” would walk around the leaves with a lantern and ensure no one stole any fruit. Pivik said that during this game, people would try to take fruit without being caught by the grape keeper. If the thieves were caught, they were taken to the judge for their sentence. Some of the residents went to a “jail.”
This was not just a dance, but a place for people to meet. Pivik said he met his first wife at the dance and they were married in the Dom.
“We waited for that wine festival dance,” Pivik said.
For those who were hungry, there was plenty of food for them and beer to drink in the Dorn’s basement.
Pivik said the balcony on the top floor was a popular destination because it overlooked the entire dance floor. Pivik said it was a spectacular view looking down onto
the festival.
The Slovenski Dom holds many memories for a lot of people. Pivik said that to pay for maintenance costs, the group had to lease the building. Residents leased the building for weddings, meetings, New Year’s Eve parties and other receptions.
“We’re still maintaining and keeping it going," Pivik said.
In order to keep the building open, Pivik said the group decided to lease it to a business. Pivik said he did not want to see the building closed or boarded up.
In 1997 the building was leased to the Local Color Art and Gift Gallery, which has continued using the property.
Moore said there are two pictures in the gallery that reflect how the Dom used to be. One picture shows wine dancers in their original Slovenian costumes, the other is a picture of the building.
When residents come into the gallery they cannot believe how big the Dom is. She said she will hear stories about how men met their wives during a dance.

Slovenian National Art Guild’s show on Nov. 13 was a great success as usual. Some of the participants sold out before the show was over.
A group of members met on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Cleveland Art Museum to see the exhibit, “The Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe and America, 1880-1920, Classics of Modem Design." A guide spoke about each exhibit which made the evening more interesting.
No meetings in December or January.
The February meeting will be on Monday, the 20th at 7 p.m. in Slovenian Society Home, 20713 Recher Ave., Euclid. On the agenda will be painting of eggs and planning of trip to Millionaire’s Row (Euclid Ave.).
In March, Flo Petrick will speak about and show parts of her DVD on cooking Slovenian style. This meeting will be in the Clubroom of Euclid Slovenian Home because Flo needs the large TV to show her CD.
In April, Millie Hegler will do a demonstration floral arrangement.
The May meeting will feature Pot Luck.

‘ Premier Janez Janša zagovarjal odločitev glede Iraka - Kritičen je bivši premier Anton Rop - Gre za štiri inštruktorje
Na tiskovni konferenci poprejšnjo sredo je predsednik slovenske vlade Janez Janša pojasnil, zakaj se je njegova vlada odločila, da bo poslala v Irak štiri inštruktorje slovenske vojske, ki bodo pomagali pri usposabljanju iraških vojaških sil. Skliceval se je na resolucijo varnostnega sveta Združenih narodov iz junija 2004. Omenjena in še druge resolucije OZN pozivajo vse članice te osrednje mednarodne organizacije, naj pomagajo pri stabilizaciji razmer v Iraku, tako da bo Irak po demokratičnih spremembah sposoben sam zagostavljati lastno varnost in stabilnost. Iraška vlada je formalno prosila za pomoč zvezo NATO in ta je že junija 2004 sklenila, da bo pomagala pri stabilizaciji razmer v Iraku.
Slovenija je ena zadnjih članic NATA m EU, ki se je vključila v prizadevanja za stabilizacijo Iraka, je rekel Janša. “Smo čla-n' mednarodnih organizacij in pričakujemo, da bo, če bo to potrebno, tudi Sloveniji zagotovljena varnost. Ravnali bi zelo neverodostojno, če tudi Slovenija ne bi bila pripravljena sama sodelovati v prizadevanju mednarodne skupnosti za stabilizacijo razmer kjerkoli na svetu.”
Kritični do odločitve Janševe vlade so v Prvi vrsti levičarski elementi v državi. Zgovoren pri tem je nekdanji premier Anton R°p iz vrst LDS, ki je pa osredotočil svo-j° kritiko bolj na način, kako se je vlada odločila za ta ukrep. Vlada, tako Rop, naj k* bila tako pomembno odločitev sprejela rez vnaprejšnje napovedi, brez predstavitve argumentov tako javnosti kot državnemu zboru in brez predhodnega sklica sveta za hacionalno varnost. “To kaže na način do-
jemanja demokracije v Sloveniji in tudi na način odločanja, kakršnega imamo zdaj,” je izjavil Rop.
Ropa so motile tudi Janševe besede, da gre pri pošiljanju štirih inštruktorjev v Irak kot nadaljevanje politike prejšnje, Ropove vlade. “Prejšnja vlada ni in nikoli ne bi sprejela takšne odločitve,” je dejal.
Olimpijski ogenj prepotoval Slovenijo
Pretekli teden so nosili Olimpijski ogenj po Sloveniji. Zimske olimpijske igre se bodo pričele v italijanskem mestu Torinu za dobra dva tedna sredi februarja, na igrah bo imela Slovenija dokaj močno ekipo, posebej v smučanju. Pretekli petek je na Prešernovem trgu v Ljubljani potekala predolimpijska slovesnost ob gostovanju olimpijskega ognja. Slavnostni nagovor je imel dr. Milan Zver, minister za šolstvo in šport. Celotna slovenska ekipa menda še ni bila izbrana. Igre bo na svoji mreži v ZDA posredovala mreža NBC.

Predsednik glavne opozicijske stranke LDS in hkrati evropski poslanec (in nekdanji obrambni minister) Jelko Kacin je bil v svojem govoru na proslavi 64. obletnice t. i. Dražgoške bitke 8. januarja zelo oster: “Če Nemci niso v štirih letih zmogli spremeniti odnosa naših ljudi do NOB, tudi vladi RS to ne bo uspelo, ne v tem in ne v katerem koli mandatu.” Proslave se je menda udeležilo približno šest tisoč ljudi. “Ne morejo nas prepričati, da so nas branili domobranci,” je poudaril osrednji govornik, ki je bil kritičen tudi do domnevne zlorabe rimskokatoliške Cerkve v politične namene.

^anez Janša, predsednik slovenske vlade, je 18. januarja na Brdu pri Kranju ob začetku novega leta sprejel diplomatski zbor. V svojem nagovoru je Janša poudaril, da bo Slovenja nadaljevala uresničevanje začrtanih zunanjepolitičnih prednostnih nalog, v okviru kate-r'h bo še naprej namenjala veliko pozornosti dobrim sosedskim odnosom. Slovenija si bo Prizadevala tudi za povečanje širšega regionalnega, političnega in gospodarskega sodelovanja V Sfednji Evropi. “Kot članica EU in zveze NATO bomo vztrajno podpirali politiko odpr-'a vrat za vse države Zahodnega Balkana,” je dodal.
Lani je slovenska zunanja politika zaradi članstva Slovenije v evroatlantskih povezavah sPrejela izziv povečane mednarodne odgovornosti. “Položaj Slovenije v mednarodni skupno-sti je trden,” je prepričan Janša. Razlog za to vidi v čedalje aktivnejšem in uspešnejšem Prevzemanju nalog za blaginjo mednarodne skupnosti. “Slovenija se je lani vključevala v j-evilne človekoljubne, vojaško-stabilizacijske, gospodarske in kulturne projekte mednarodne j*uPnosti.” Med drugimi je poudaril tudi pomembnost sodelovanja v boju proti terorizmu. Med drugimi na fotografiji v prvi vrsti so na desni zunanji minister Dimitrij Rupel, proti ^edini pa ljubljanski nadškof in metropolit Alojz Uran, ob njem pa vatikanski nuncij v ‘oveniji Santos Abril y Castello, ki je hkrati dojen diplomatskega zbora.
POMEMBNO OBVESTILO
V Izjavi na prvi angleški strani današnje številke AD pojasnjuje lastnik in založnik James V. Debevec, zakaj je bil prisiljen na omejitev izhajanja tega lista na prve tri tedne v mesecu. V Četrtem (in nekajkrat na leto tudi v petem) tedniku lista ne bo. Poudarja, da je do tega ukrepa prišlo izključno zaradi finančnega razloga in pri tem citira določene podrobnosti, ki so jasne in neizbežne. Prosi za razumevanje naročnikov in bralcev, kar velja seveda tudi za slovenski del in za tiste, ki se zanj predvsem še zanimajo.
Tudi kot urednik drugega lista v skupnosti, glasila Ameriške dobrodelne zveze in eden Zvezinih direktorjev, sem seznanjen z naraščajočimi stroški izdajanja rednega lista in tu v prvi vrsti s tistimi, povezanimi s pošto oz. poštnino. Tu je bil eden od razlogov, zakaj se je ADZ odločila samo za mesečno izdajo lista, po isti poti so pa šla ostala glasila slovenskih zavarovalninskih zvez oz. jednot. Nobeden teh pa nima toliko slovenskega branja več, kot ga posreduje AD, kar je tudi upoštevanja vredno.	Rudolph M. Susel

Novi grobovi
Rev. VICTOR N. TOMC
Na domu svoje nečakinje je po dolgem bolehanju v soboto, 21. januarja, umrl 89 let stari Rev. Victor N. Tomc, upokojeni župnik fare Marije Vnebovzete na Holmes Ave. v Collinwoodu, rojen 29. oktobra 1916 v Clevelandu. Obiskoval je sve-tovidsko farno šolo, nato višjo šolo Cathedral Latin, univerzo John Carroll in bogoslovje Sv. Marije. Dne 18. decembra 1943 ga je v duhovnika posvetil takratni škof Edward F. Hoban. Naj-prva dolžnost je bila kot asistent na župniji Marije Vnebovzete, od 1946 do januarja 1955 je bil pri sv. Vidu, od 1955 do 1960 pri sv. Kristini v Euclidu, od 1960 do 1965 pri Sv. Družini v Parmi, od 1965 do 1. aprila 1967 je bil asistent pri Mariji Vnebovzeti, ko je bil imenovan za župnika in služil natanko dvajset let, do 1. aprila 1987, ko se je upokojil. Rev. Tomc je bil zelo predan v podpiranju prizadevanj za beatifikacijo (DALJE na str. 16)

Hvaležni ameriški Slovenci
-"Tudi jaz bi se rada vpisala v čebelarsko društvo," je rekla naša Urška. "Naučila bi se rada ravnati s čebelami, da ne bo ta lepa slovenska navada izumrla." Urška pozna nekaj čebelarjev tukaj v Clevelandu in vsi so Slovenci. Tudi, ko je živela nekaj let doma v Sloveniji, so bili sosedje vneti čebelarji. Torej je to slovenska navada.
Za naše prednike je bila to gotovo koristna gospodarska panoga in imamo Slovenci bogato čebelarsko zgodovino. Omenim Antona Janšo, ki je na Dunaju vodil prvo čebelarsko šolo v cesarstvu na pobudo cesarice Marije Terezije. Zelo priljubljen nam je posebej še njegov sodobnik, Peter Pavel Glavar, kaplan v Komendi. On se je trudil in pisal o čebelah v slovenščini za preproste slovenske ljudi in jih vzpodbujal k tej dejavnosti.
Ali pa je čebelarjenje zanimivo še danes tukaj v okolici Clevelanda? Živimo v zelo moderni dobi. TV prižigamo z daljinci. Pošta je le še za račune in odvečne reklame. Pisem več ne pišemo in ne pošiljamo po pošti, ampak jih tipkamo in e-mailamo.
Vse kar brenči okoli nas je mrčes, kar pika so čebele, ampak ne priljubljene kranjske sivke, delavne in koristne ter nadvse prijazne živalice, ampak so “bees". Nevarne ose, sršeni, in vse brez razlike so “bees".
A le brez skrbi - moderna kemija nam nudi učinkovita sredstva za obrambo. Najslabše se seveda piše osam, ki se jih do jeseni res namnoži in zelo rade gnezdijo v delih naših domov. So sicer zelo zaposlene in nam ljudem koristne živalice. Marsikdaj pa ti kot za šalo, kar med letom zabode svoje želo
pod kožo. In gotovo bo vsak čebelar zelo vestno uničil vsa osja gnezda, če se je le ena osa spozabila in ranila nežno kožo čebelarjeve žene.
Tudi našim tratam se ne godi nič bolje. Regrat, detelja in ostale takšne rožiče, ki silijo med nas iz preteklosti, je treba poškropiti s herbicidi, če daš le kaj na svoje okolje.
Kdor je odraščal v Sloveniji, se gotovo spominja kako si med igro stopil z boso otroško nogo na čebelo, ki se je pasla na detelji. Najboljše in edino potrebno zdravilo je bil mamin objem, ki je hitro ublažil bolečino in poslal bosonogca nazaj v igro.
Za večino sosedov smo čebelarji gotovo malo čez les. Čebelar si namreč poišče prostor nekje za hišo ali celo pred hišo prav pred nosom svojih sosedov. Zbije nekaj lesenih zabojev in jih napolni s čebelami.
Na lanskem referendumu o novem zakonu o RTV Slovenija je sodelovalo tudi več slovenskih državljanov in naših bralcev tudi v ZDA. Zakon je bil potrjen, sicer z manjšo večino, a vendar. Sedaj se pa uveljavlja in pred kratkim je državni zbor potrdil člane programskega in tudi nadzornega sveta. Med člani in članicami so nekateri, ki so tudi nekaterim nam znani, bodisi osebno ali po imenih. Sledi članek iz najnovejše (22. jan.) Družine, sicer vzet iz poročila Slovenske tiskovne agencije. Ur. Poslanke in poslanci so v sredo, 11. januarja,
“Na tisoče jih je," se boji mama sosedovega petletnega Johnnyja.
“Saj niso tako nevarne," jo tolaži mož Tom.
“Nič prijetnega ne čutim v srcu. Že ob samem pogledu na panje me je strah," doda mlada mama.
Zdaj pa je zima in strah se je začasno polegel. Čebelar sedi pri oknu in gleda snežinke, ki se neslišno spuščajo z višin in nežno pristajajo in se zbirajo na strehah, drevju in tratah. Čebelar razmišlja o svojih prijateljicah, ki se stiskajo ena k drugi v tistih lesenih zabojih, da bi ohranile čim-več toplote, kajti mrzli dnevi in noči bodo dolgi in številni. Razmišlja, čaka, in se veseli prvih cvetov regrata, kar mu bo znak, da je čas pomladi, začenja se novo čebelarsko leto in lahko odpre in pregleda čebelje družine.
In zakaj sem razmišljal o vsem zgornjem? Odločiti se moram, ali naj kupim Urški spomladi en panj. Pa pravi, da ni treba.
imenovali člane novih organov Radiotelevizije Slovenija. Na predlog političnih strank so izvolili pet članov novega programskega sveta, na predlog zainteresirane javnosti pa šestnajst članov tega organa. Imenovali so še pet posameznikov, ki bodo na predlog strank sedeli v novem nadzornem svetu.
Člani programskega sveta, ki so jih predlagale politične stranke, so postali odvetnik Jože Hribernik (na predlog SDS), publicist in profesor na Fakulteti za družbene vede Vlado Miheljak (LDS), profesor na Fakulteti za družbene vede Jernej Pikalo (SD), novinar Tino Mamič (NSi) in profesorica na Pedagoški fakulteti v Mariboru Jana Bezenšek (SLS).
Med 184 kandidati, ki so jih posredovali gledalci in poslušalci programov RTVS, univerze in fakultete, društva, zveze društev (zlasti s področja umetnosti, kulture, znanosti in novinarstva), ter druge organizacije civilne
družbe, je državni zbor imenoval še šestnajst članov programskega sveta.
Štiriletni mandat v programskem svetu bodo imeli Boris Cipot (na predlog gledalke in poslušalke), Stane Granda (Zavod za oživitev civilne družbe), Tanja Kuštrin (društvo Zapisi Dornberk), Gregor Pivec (Univerza v Mariboru), Tanja Lesničar Pučko (Društvo novinarjev Slovenije), Jože Snoj (Nova revija), Ivan Štuhec (Zavod za oživitev civilne družbe, društvo Mohorjeva družba) in Mito Trefalt (Športno društvo Brazde vzdržljivosti).
Dve leti pa bodo v programskem svetu sedeli Alenčica Marija Bole Vrabec (na predlog Pokrajinske zveze društev upokojencev Gorenjske), Boris Grabrijan (Kemtij-sko-gozdarska zbornica), Bine Matoh (na predlog gledalca in poslušalca), Hubert Požarnik (društvo Pobuda za šolo po meri človeka. Društvo katoliških pedagogov in društvo Slovenski katoliški izobraženci), Jože Faganel (društvo Slovenski katoliški izobraženci in Teološka fakulteta), Spomenka
Hribar (Forum 21), Helena Kastelic Zupančič (Rdeči križ Slovenije) in Ivo Jakop (Gorniški klub Savinjske doline Luče).
Za člane nadzornega sveta javnega zavoda je državni zbor imenoval pravnika Klemna Jakliča in ekonomista Franca Orešnika (oba na predlog SDS), direktorja agencije Ninamedia in dosedanjega predsednika nadzornega odbora javnega zavoda Nikolo Damjaniča (LDS), ekonomista Tomaža Glažarja (SNS) in veterinarja Igorja Šetinca (na predlog poslanke madžarske narodno skupnosti).
Programski svet bo imel pristojnosti predvsem s področja programov in bo zastopal interese javnosti. Zakon predvideva, da programski svet imenuje in razrešuje generalnega direktorja, k drugim imenovanjem direktorjev pa daje le soglasje.
Soglasje daje tudi k statutu zavoda, k finančnemu načrtu pa zgolj mnenje. Sicer pa sprejema programske standar-

LETO NOVEGA ZAGONA
Konec leta novinarji navadno pripravimo pregled dogodkov, ki so najbolj zaznamovali preteklo leto. Na notranjepolitičnem prizorišču je bilo takšnih kar nekaj, večina pa jih je potekala v luči prvega leta delovanja nove vlade.

JANUAR
Negativno mnenje strankam
Vstop v koledarsko leto 2005 so najprej zaznamovali zakoni, ki so začeli veljati 1. januarja. To so bili novi zakon o varnosti cestnega prometa, novela zakona o upravnem postopku, ki je omogočila uporabnikom preprostejše in bolj dostopne storitve. Kot dediščina Prejšnje vlade je začel veljati tudi novi zakon o dohodnini, ki je še pred uveljavitvijo naletel na številne proteste.
Računsko sodišče je Podalo oceno financiranja volilne kampanje za državnozborske volitve, pri tem pa je izreklo pozitivno mnenje le za kampa-nJo (Janševe) SDS in poslanko madžarske narobne skupnosti.
Kranjska bolnišnica in nJen direktor Marko Lav-«č sta prišla pod drob-n°gled policijskih preiskovalcev zaradi nepravil-n°sti pri oddaji javnih Uaročil. Afera se je kas-neJe razvnela zaradi pro-tlzakonitih pregledov bri-s°v materničnega vratu v Osebnih laboratorijih, s čimer naj bi bilo ogroženo zdravje žensk, ki so Se podvrgle omenjenim Preiskavam.
Na predlog Adolfa Zu-Pnna, člana LDS, je dr-^nvni svet sprejel pobudo ° uvedbi parlamentarne Preiskave o delu državnega tožilstva.

Med pristojnostmi nad-Z°rnega organa pa novi 'Hkon predvideva spreje-|^anje statuta in finanč-^ega načrta zavoda, dolo-anje cene storitev in na-n Plačevanja rtv pridevkov in nadziranje potovanja zavoda. STA
Vlada začela serijo obiskov
Poslanci so obravnavali različne poglede na ureditev oziroma zoženje poslanske imunitete. Skupščina Zavoda za pokojninsko in invalidsko zavarovanje (ZPIZ) je glasovala proti vladnemu predlogu o izplačilu akontacije dodatka za rekreacijo upokojencem za tekoče leto že januarja. Položaj je bil absurden predvsem zato, ker so tudi predstavniki vlade v skupščini glasovali proti predlogu. Vlada se je zato pred koncem meseca odločila, da v skupščino imenuje nove predstavnike.
Vladna ekipa je obiskala Bovec in s tem začela prakso obiskov v vseh slovenskih regijah, s čimer naj bi na kraju samem preverila položaj, (ne)zadovoljstvo in probleme lokalnega prebivalstva.
FEBRUAR
Omejena svetniška imuniteta
Vlada je v postopek vložila kasneje prestavljen
predlog sprememb zakona o javnih uslužbencih, ki je doživel kritične odzive opozicije in sindikatov. Zakon, ki bi omogočil razširitev kroga najviš-jih državnih uradnikov, ki bi jih lahko vlada razrešila brez krivdnih vzrokov, je minister za javno upravo Gregor Virant ocenil kot nujnega za u-činkovitejše delo ministrstev. V opoziciji so v predlogu zakona videli možnost za “kadrovski cunami”.
Vlada se je medtem odločila pripraviti razpis za prodajo starega vladnega letala, hkrati pa napovedala, da bodo njeni predstavniki kar največ uporabljali redne letalske prevoze.
Ustavno sodišče je razveljavilo člen poslovnika državnega sveta, ki je njegovim članom omogočal uživanje imunitete tudi za kazenske postopke, ki so se začeli pred potrditvijo	svetnikovega
mandata.
Odpravljene nalepke
Predstavniki študentov so zbrali potrebne podpise za vložitev predloga
novele zakona o dohodnini v državni zbor. Študentje so protestirali predvsem proti 25-odstot-ni obdavčitvi svojega dela.
Poslanci so na izredni seji sprejeli novelo zakona o javnih uslužbencih. Kresanje mnenj je sprožil razlog predstavnikov NSi za zavrnitev kandidature sodnice ustavnega sodišča Mirjam Škrk za članico stalnega arbitrarnega sodišča v Haagu. Škrkova je namreč svoj-čas glasovala za zadržanje izvajanja zakona o nedeljskem zaprtju trgovin. Za predsednika ustavnega sodišča Janeza Čebulja je glasovanje pomenilo poseg v neodvisnost sodstva.
Ob kratkotrajni gladovni stavki izbrisanih je bil splošne obsodbe deležen plakat na vratih poslanske skupine SNS, ki je izbrisane vabil na ples z orožjem.
V Trstu so zaznamovali prvi dan spomina na žrtve fojb. Prireditev je skupaj s televizijskim filmom Srce v breznu na obeh straneh meje sprožila polemiko o komunističnih in fašističnih zločinih med vojno in po njej.
Vlada je razdrla pogodbo z novomeškim podjetjem Mirage o izdelovanju registrskih nalepk in potnih listov.
MAREC
Abolicija prekrškov
Storilce manjših prekrškov je razveselila napoved abolicije sodnih pos-
topkov v zvezi z njimi, kar naj bi razbremenilo sodišča.
Šolski minister Milan Zver je bil na udaru zaradi posega v novomeški vroči kostanj. Skupina staršev otrok iz osnovne šole Bršljin je namreč zahtevala prerazporeditev romskih otrok in zagrozila, da bodo v nasprotnem primeru njihovi otroci ostali doma.
Zver je dosegel kompromis z oblikovanjem posebnih skupin znotraj razredov. Zverovi nasprotniki so sprožili polemiko o “segregaciji”, kar je na šoli pripeljalo do vnovičnih zapletov. Tudi odlo-(DALJE na str. 14)
Nov vlak med Ljubljano in Prago
Trst (Novi glas, 1. 12. 2005) - Dne 11. decem-brat je na slovenskih železnicah začel veljati nov vozni red, ki bo veljal do 9. decembra 2006. Skladno z njim je na slovenskih progah zapeljal prvi vlak, imenovan Euro-City, ki neposredno povezuje Prago z Ljubljano. O podrobnostih so se sporazumeli s predstavniki Čeških železnic, ko so le-ti obiskali slovenske železnice.
Vlak je poimenovan po Jožetu Plečniku, največjem slovenskem arhitektu in urbanistu, ki je ustvarjal tudi v Pragi.
Novi vlak med obema mestoma naj bi prispeval tudi k povezovanju med Slovenijo in Češko. Tam zainteresiranim ponujajo zelo veliko informacij o možnosti potovanj in počitnikovanj na Hrvaškem, zelo malo pa o Sloveniji.
Potniki na novi progi, ki je velika novost v mednarodni usmeritvi slovenskih železnic, lahko potujejo v dnevnem času. Vlak ima v Zidanem Mostu zveze z Zagrebom oz. s Hrvaško. S tem se bo število potnikov lahko še povečalo. Na vlaku je jedilni vagon z restavracijo.
Na železniški progi na relaciji Praga-Maribor-Lju-bljana bosta vozila dva vlaka. Vlak iz Prage v Ljubljano pripelje vsak dan ob 5.32 pop., iz nje pa v glavno mesto Češke odpelje naslednjega dne ob 10.18 dop.

2005 - LETO NOVEGA ZAGONA

čltev o odpravi zunanjega preverjanja znanja v prvi triadi osnovne šole je doživela kritike opozicije.
Po prvih stotih dneh je Janševa ministrska . ekipa ugotavljala skrito zapuščino prejšnje vlade. Najšokantnejši Je bil podatek o 70-milijardni prikriti proračunski luknji, poleg tega pa so premier in ministri ugotavljali pretirano birokracijo v državni upravi in številčnost nerešenih upravnih postopkov.
Delo vlade so ocenili tudi v opoziciji. Medtem ko je Anton Rop dejal, da vlada ni pripravila konkretnega programa dela in ukrepov, temveč le neoprijemljive splošne cilje, so bile v takrat še združeni listi ocene različne. Miran Potrč je ostal izjemno kritičen, strankin predsednik Borut Pahor pa je delo vlade ocenil kot zadovoljivo.
Tožilce pregledovala komisija
Državni zbor je odredil parlamentarno preiskavo o razmerah na državnem tožilstvu in morebitni politični odgovornosti nosilcev javnih funkcij, kot je to zahteval državni svet.
V ta namen ustanovljena komisija naj bi ugo-
tavljala razloge za dolgotrajnost postopkov in ne-reševanje zadev s strani tožilcev.
Parlamentarno dvorano je razburkala obstrukcija poslancev LDS, ki so na tak način izrazili nasprotovanje načinu, s katerim je predsedujoči Sašo Peče (SNS) odvzel besedo njihovi poslanki Majdi Širca.
Kot vodja poslanske skupine SDS Je odstopil Mirko Zamernik, njegovo mesto pa Je prevzel Jože Tanko.
Trdnost ljubljanske mestne koalicije med LDS in ZLSD Je z izstopom iz svetniškega kluba LDS omajala nekdanja županja Vika Potočnik.
Predsednik avstrijskega parlamenta Andreas Khol Je pred obiskom v Ljubljani razburil slovensko in zamejsko javnost z izjavo, da naša država ni naslednica avstrijske državne pogodbe, ki ureja tudi status slovenske manjšine na Koroškem.

ta Pahorja. Pahor ni skrival ambicij, da iz SD napravi najmočnejšo stranko v državi.
Vlada se je odločila za razrešitev generalnega direktorja policije Darka Anželja, ki pa je vladno potezo označil za politično. Vršilec dolžnosti je postal Bojan Potočnik.
Vlada je za generalno državno tožilko predlagala Barbaro Brezigar.
Javnost je bila prvič seznanjena s predlogom novega zakona o RTV Slovenija, ki so mu opozicijski politiki in nekateri vidni učitelji s Fakultete za družbene vede o-čitali preveliko politizacijo.
Najbolj moteč naj bi bil vpliv parlamenta na sestavo programskega sveta.
Po mnenju predlagateljev naj bi zakon prinesel večjo preglednost v javni zavod RTV. Vlada je končno popustila in zakon uvrstila v obravnavo po rednem in ne več po nujnem postopku.
Pravosodni minister Lovro Šturm Je dobil končno poročilo o aferi Železnik, ko je nekdanji državni tožilec v omari “pozabil” nad 160 sodnih spisov. Afera je odnesla voditeljico okrožnega državnega tožilstva Slavico Sketelj, ki je odstopila.
Predstavljen je bil sveženj t. i. vojnih zakonov, s katerimi je vlada želela odpraviti nesorazmerno visoke “borčevske" pokojnine in izenačiti žrtve vojnega nasilja. Opozicija se je na to odzvala in ji očitala “ponarejenje zgodovine”.

delila tudi skupina 16 “rdečih” zgodovinarjev.
Vlada je dosegla dogovor s sindikati o noveli zakona o sistemu plač v javnem sektorju. Poleg tega so njeni predstavniki pripravili predlog zakona o pokojninskem in invalidskem zavarovanju, po katerem bi se pokojnine usklajevale dvakrat letno, kar naj bi preprečilo preveliko zaostajanje pokojnin za plačami.
Izredno odmeven Je bil govor premierja Janeza Janše na Mali gori pri Ribnici ob dnevu upora proti okupatorju, v katerem je izpostavil vlogo protifašistične organizacije TIGR, ki se je prva uprla okupatorju. Predsednik vlade je v govoru, ki Je izzval ostre reakcije in sprožil Javno razpravo o Tigru, obsodil zločine komunistov in protikomunistov.

Barbara Brezigar prisegla
Začetek maja so že tradicionalno zaznamovale prireditve ob delavskem prazniku 1. maju. Največja je bila na ljubljanskem Rožniku, kjer se je na predvečer praznika zbralo okoli 25.000 ljudi. Prireditve se je udeležil tudi
minister za delo, družino in socialne zadeve Janez Drobnič, ki Je že dan pred tem delavcem namenil posebno poslanico, v kateri je zapisal, da Je temeljna skrb vlade zagotoviti, da se bodo ljudje lahko preživljali s svojim delom in da bodo pomoči deležni tisti. W Jo dejansko potrebujejo.
“V središču dela ministrstva na vseh področjih bo tako skrb za vsakega posameznika in za socialno pravičen sistem, M ne bo privilegiral in tudi ne izključeval posameznih skupin prebivalstva," je zapisal Drobnič.
Medtem ko so po velikih količinah alkohola, popitega na prvomajskih praznovanjih, mnogi vei dni prihajali k sebi, je morala takoj po praznikih z vso resnostjo za delo poprijeti nova generalna državna tožilka Barbara Brezigar. Po prisegi 4. maja v državnem zboru je dejala, da bosta njeni prvi nalogi na novem delovnem mestu povrnitev ugleda tožilstvu in sprememba zakona o državnem tožilstvu v tistem delu, ki govori o skupini tožilcev za posebne zadeve.

Naš človek v Jugoslaviji”
Bliža se 60-letnica tragičnega konca številnih primorskih padalcev, ki so po vojni postali žrtve revolucionarnega nasilja. V Škrbini na Krasu bo 11. novembra (Ur. AD: ta članek je izšel že v oktobrski številki tržaške revije MLADIKE) že tradicionalna komemoracija pred ploščo, ki spominja nanje. Pred tem bo v vaški cerkvi maša za-dušnica.
Z delom in usodo primorskih padalcev se zadnje čase ukvarja vse več raziskovalcev. Na ljubljanski univerzi je na primer diplomiral mladi Primorec Blaž Torkar, ki je uspešno zagovarjal diplomsko delo “Rekrutacija in urjenje slovenskih pripadnikov misij Britanske uprave za posebne operacije (1941-1945).
Za to številko Mladike je v Trstu živeči angleški časnikar in bivši pripadnik SOE John Earle, stari znanec naših zvestih bralcev in avtor knjige “The Ptice of Patriotism", napisal oceno (prevedel jo je podpisani) čisto sveže angleške knjige, ki se dotika tudi nekaterih tragično preminulih slovenskih padalcev. Novi podatki o nekaterih slovenskih padalcih, zlasti o Milanu Boštjančiču in Zdravku Lenščaku. Nudi nam jih knjiga Naš človek v Jugoslaviji -zgodba pripadnika tajne službe, ki je nedavno izšla v Londonu pri založbi Frank Cass. Napisal Jo je Sebastian Ritchie, ki je zgodovinar in strokovnjak za vojaško letalstvo na britanskem obrambnem ministrstvu.
Ritchie je vnuk “našega Človeka" - Owena Reeda ~ in je imel to srečo, da se je lahko pogovarjal z dedom, preden je leta 1997 umrl, dostop pa je imel tudi do njegovega dnevnika in družinskih dokumentov. Ritchie je zajemal še iz običajnih britanskih virov, na primer iz državnega arhiva The National Archives, ne Pa tudi iz slovenskih ali Jugoslovanskih virov.
V	letih 1943-45 je bil Reed zastopnik ISLD (MI6 ali SIS, torej obveščevalne službe) prej pri hrvaškem glavnem štabu Narodnoosvobodilne vojske Jugoslavije oz. partizanov, na-to krajši čas pri 43. di-v!ziji v Istri, kasneje še PU slovenskem glavnem Štabu.
V	zadnjem obdobju v°jne je bil spet dodeljen hrvaškemu glavnemu šta-hu, ki ga je spremljal v sklepnem pohodu proti Magrebu, kjer Je nato ne-
aJ tednov kril mesto začasnega britanskega konzula.
Za slovenskega bralca Je posebno zanimivo zapleteno obdobje, ki ga je SePtembra 1944 Reed
prebil v Istri v okviru misije Claret. Ko je tja dospel, je naletel na “množico zavezniških skupin za posebne operacije". Po njegovem mnenju Je bilo daleč preveč agentov zahodnih zaveznikov.
Pikro je pripomnil, da so drug drugemu stopali na prste, “saj so se člani vseh organizacij pritoževali, da čisto nič ne vedo o dejavnostih ostalih organizacij".
Tam so bili pripadniki ISLD, SOE, ameriške OSS, britanske posebne ladijske službe Special Boat Service in dve edinici britanske puščavske skupine Long Range Desert Group. Neurejeno pošiljanje osebja za posebne o-peracije je povzročalo huda trenja s partizani, s katerimi je Reed, kot je sam priznal, simpatiziral.
Na hrvaškem glavnem štabu je Reed vzpostavil tople človeške stike z generalom Ivanom Gošnja-kom in drugimi voditelji. V Istri pa so ga čakala čisto drugačna doživetja. Skupno z britanskim ra-diooperaterjem se je s padalom spustil v noči 9. septembra s krova letala, ki je vzletelo v južni Italiji in ga je upravljala “mlada in neizkušena ameriška posadka”. Spustila ju je s prevelike višine, k sreči pa so ju našli in sta srečno dospela do glavnega štaba divizije.
Po dogovoru s partizani bi moral Reed v Istri dobiti v pomoč dva slovenska radiooperaterja, ki sta nastopala s šiframa “Tomato” in “Oil".
Ritchie ni mogel najti njunih imen v britanskem arhivskem gradivu. Oba je kot padalca izvežbala služba ISLD, prestopila sta k partizanom in junija krenila iz južne Italije v Dalmacijo, da bi z nadziranjem nemških pomorskih premikov sodelovala s pomorskimi enotami jugoslovanske narodnoosvobodilne vojske. Že nekaj časa sta bila v Istri.
To ni bil srečen trenutek v angleško-partizan-skih odnosih. Mesec prej, sredi avgusta, se je britanski ministrski predsednik Winston Churchill pri Neaplju srečal z maršalom Titom in mu med razgovori razodel, da načrtuje izkrcanje britanskih sil v severnem Jadranu.
Tito ni bil pripravljen sprejeti nobene take enostranske pobude in od takrat dalje so se začeli odnosi med partizanskim vodstvom in britanskimi misijami vsepovsod po Jugoslaviji slabšati.
Reed Je zaman čakal na Tomata in Oila. 22. septembra pa so partizani njemu in še enemu kolegu iz SOE, majorju Arnoldu Breeneju, celo brezprizivno ukazali, naj v najkrajšem času zapustita Istro in se javita štabu XI. korpusa v zaledju.
Nekaj dni kasneje se jima je tam pridružil neki kapetan Prescott iz SOE, ki je bil na izvi-dniški poti po Istri. Prescott jima je povedal, da je videl, da s Tomatom in Oilom "zelo grdo ravnajo ter ju imajo zaprta na štabu 43. divizije”. Partizani so jima tudi odvzeli radiooddajne aparate in šifre.
Reed je sprožil ta problem pred štabom in poveljnikom XI. korpusa -Ritchie ne navaja njegovega imena - ter zahteval, naj v skladu s poprejšnjimi dogovori pošljejo Tomata in Oila k njemu.
Partizani pa so se začeli sprenevedati. Najprej so mu zagotovili, da bodo Tomata in Oila premestili iz 43. divizije v XI. korpus. Pozneje, ko se je spet srečal s poveljnikom korpusa, mu je

V maju so bili kongresi kar treh parlamentarnih strank. Na rednem kongresu SDS, ki je bil 14. maja v Portorožu, je bil po pričakovanjih za predsednika znova izvoljen Janez Janša.
Na kongresu SNS 21. maja na Brdu pri Kranju je še en predsedniški mandat dobil Zmago Jelinčič. na kongresu DeSUS, ki je potekal dan prej v Ljubljani, pa so se za novega predsednika stranke pomerili trije kandidati: Karl Eijavec, Mirko Miklavčič in Anton Bebler. S podporo prejšnjega predsednika DeSUS Antona Rousa Je zmagal Erjavec.
Novica mesta maja pa Je bila, da je policija zaradi suma povojnega genocida na tožilstvo podala kazensko ovadbo zoper Mitjo Ribičiča.
JUNIJ
Spori znotraj LDS
Prvo polovico junija je zaznamovala predvsem
parada odstopov v največji opozicijski stranki LDS. Tako je z mesta generalnega sekretarja stranke 9. junija odstopil Roman Jakič (uradno iz osebnih razlogov, neuradno pa zaradi nestrinjanja z načinom vodenja stranke), nekaj dni pozneje pa so iz stranike svetniške skuine v ljubljanskem mestnem svetu odstopili štirje svetniki: Dunja Piškur Kosmač, Stane Pejovnik, Peter Božič in Janko Moderndor-fer.
Po izstopu, ki je prvič resneje zmajal mestno koalicijo, so dejali, da so se za odstop odlčili zaradi nestrinjanja z načinom vodenja mestne politike, od takrat pa v mestnem svetu delujejo kot samostojni svetniki.
Sredi junija je prvi odstop katerega od pomembnejših funkcionarjev doživela tudi vlada. Z mesta njenega glavnega tiskovnega predstavnika je odstopil Jernej Pavlin, ki je pred tem vsem tiskovnim predstavnikom ministrstev poslal priporočilo, naj komuniciranje s tednikom Mladina omejijo na minimum. Takšno priporočilo je Pavlin samokritično ocenil kot ne-
dopustno napako in kot eden redkih funkcionarjev v zadnjih letih s položaja odstopil sam.
V	drugi polovici junija se je večina dogajanja vrtela okoli referendumskih pobud o novem zakonu o RTV Slovenija. Najprej je pobudo za, razpis predhodnega referenduma v imenu skjupine 1.283 volivcev vložil Marjan Sedmak, vendar Jo je predsednik državnega zbora France Cukjati zaradi nepravilno oblikovanega in nepopolnega vprašanja zavrnil. Ker Sedmak na novo pobudo ni želel zbirati novih podpisov in ker je državni zbor k mahi zatem zakon sprejel, so pobudo prevzeli v LDS.
V	slednji so imeli na začetku nekaj težav pri zbiranju podpisov 30 poslancev za razpis zakonodajnega referenduma o zakonu, vendar jim je v zadnjem trenutku s pomočjo poslancev SD podpise uspelo zbrati.
Junij pa je pomemben tudi za slovensko policijo, saj je dobila novega generalnega direktorja. To je postal Jože Rom-šek.

bilo rečeno, da sta Tomato in Oil dospela dva dneva prej, a “sta že nadaljevala pot”.
Reed je v poročilu nadrejenim zapisal, da je poveljnik “očitno lagal”.
Reedov vtis se je le še okrepil, ko je videl, da na poveljnikovem vratu visi tak daljongled, kakršnega so uporabljali pri ISLD. Očitno so ga bili odvzeli Slovencema.
Prescott, ki se je vrnil v oporišče SOE v Bariju, je tam poročal, da sta po njegovem mnenju zaprta. Reed pa je gojil “veliko mračnejše sume glede njune končne usode”.
Kdo sta bila Tomato in Oil? Za Tomata je bilo mogoče to ugotoviti. Leta 1997 je bilo v Mladiki objavljeno oznovsko zaslišanje Milana Boštjančiča (ilegalno ime Milan Debeljak), ki je povedal, da so njegovemu radioo-ddajniku določili šifrirano ime Tomato. Bil je bolničar in padalec italijanske divizije Folgore. Zajet je bil pri El Alameinu in se Je prostovoljno javil britanskim posebnim službam.
Prepoznati Oila pa je težje. Boštjančič je bil v skupini treh padalcev, ki jih je izurila služba ISLD in jim naročila, naj se skupaj iz Barija odpravijo v Dalmacijo in dalje v Istro.
Kot pravi zapisnik zaslišanja, so Boštjančiču naročili, naj poroča o sovražnikovih premikih v Trstu in okolici, vendar mu je uspelo priti le do Brkinov.
Milan Golob naj bi odšel na območje Pulja z radiooddajnikom s šifriranim imenom Triglav, Ivan Volarič pa Je bil določen za območje Reke z radiooddajnikom Soča.
Ne prvo ne drugo šifrirano ime radioodajne postaje še zdaleč ne spominja na “Oil”. Obe sta slovenski, Britanci pa za svoje misije niso uporabljali slovenskih ali Jugoslovanskih imen.
Mogoče so vsi trije radiotelegrafisti uporabljali dvojno šifro: angleško za ISLD in slovensko ali sr-bo-hrvaško za NOV J. Če je bilo tako, kdo bi lahko bil Oil, Golob ali Volarič?
O Golobu so poročali, da je padel v boju, zato bi se zdelo, da gre za Volariča. Vsako Volaričevo istovetenje z Oilom pa ostaja le zelo vprašljiva domneva.
Poleg tega je več neskladij med poročili britanskih častnikov in tem, kar je na zaslišanju o sebi povedal Boštjančič. Najprej to, da je povedal, da je bil v Črnomlju, kjer so ga zaslišali, “od konca julija”, medtem ko so britanski častniki trdili, da so ga septembra videli na glavnem štabu 43. divizije v Istri. Ali pa se je moral glavni štab 43. divizije v tistem času umakniti iz Istre v zaledje?
Mimogrede, major Bre-nne bi lahko bil Boštjančičev stari znanec, saj je ta na zaslišanju izpovedal, da je bil z nekim kapitanom “Gleenom” na neki prejšnji misiji konec leta 1943 pri Vlori v Albaniji. Tu bi lahko šlo za zamenjavo podobnih imen - “Gleen” namesto “Breene”.
Po neuspehu v Istri je služba ISLD poslala Owe-na Reeda na glavni štab Slovenije. Na svoji poti tja je šel skozi Črnomelj, to velja podčrtati, ravno v času, ko je bil - njemu nepoznani - Boštjančič tam zaprt.
Zdi se, da je Reed prespal noč od 14. na 15. oktober v Črnomlju, zapisnik Boštjančičevega zaslišanja pa nosi datum 15. oktobra.
Reed je dospel na glavni štab Slovenije naslednjega dne, 16. oktobra. Naročili so mu, naj prevzame vodstvo misije Moth od kapetana Johna Leonarda, ki je bil zaprosil za prestop k partizanom.
Leonardovo resnično ime je bilo Zdravko Len-ščak. Bil je sin železničarskega uradnika, čigar družina je izhajala iz Primorske. Lenščak, ki se je rodil v Novem mestu decembra 1919, se je zgodaj izkazal za zelo nadarjenega in so ga s štipendijo poslali študirat v Rim.
Ko Je bila Jugoslavija aprila 1941 napadena, so ga umaknili skupno z osebjem jugoslovanskega kraljevega poslaništva v Rimu in se je končno znašel v Londonu, kjer je nekaj časa služboval v
pisarni ministri Kreka v begunski vladi. Očitno je to razlog, zaradi katerega avtor opisuje Leonarda -njegovega pravega imena ne navaja - kot izseljenca.
Najmanj, kar lahko rečemo, je, da se zdi čudno, da Je bil Leonard izbran za predstavnika službe ISLD pri glavnem štabu Slovenije. Nič ni vedel o obveščevalnem delu.
Ritchie navaja neko poročilo vodje krajevne misije SOE, ki je izražal veliko začudenje, da Leonarda niso predhodno nič izurili v obveščevalnem delu in da ni čisto nič vedel o organiziranosti nemške vojske.
To je bilo v nasprotju z dejstvom, da je ISLD k partizanskim enotam na Primorskem in Štajerskem, ki so bile podrejene glavnemu štabu Slovenije, pošiljala izkušene britanske častnike. Major Nigel Watson, ki je bil pri IX. korpusu na Primorskem, je na primer delal za MI6 že med boljševistično revolucijo v Rusiji.-
Leonard je kljub pomanjkanju vojaških izkušenj sumljivo hitro dosegel kapitanski čin. Mogoče je bil v zakulisju dogovor z begunsko vlado v Londonu, ki je računala, da bo tako imela svojega človeka v Sloveniji. Če je bilo tako, so bili to računi brez krčmarja, saj je želel Leonard zapustiti kraljeve privržence in stopiti med partizane.
Na Primorsko se je spustil s padalom v noči od 18. na 19. julij 1943 skupno z dvema padalcema SOE, Stankom Simčičem in Ivom Božičem. Izskočili so pri Soški dolini, torej na ozemlju, ki je bilo takrat uradno italijansko, vendar so Leonarda in njegovega radio-operaterja Alojza Sivca takoj pospremili do glavnega štaba Slovenije.
Leonard ni bil posebno priljubljen med tovariši. Njegovi slovenski gostitelji so se pritoževali, da se ponaša s tem, da Je britanski častnik.
Leonard je bil vsekakor zelo sposoben fant. Obveščevalne podatke, ki jih je pošiljal, so zelo cenili. Ritchie omenja poročilo, ki pravi, da opravlja odlično delo, zlasti kar za-
deva podatke o sovražnikovi infrastrukturi in železniškem prometu.
Po prihodu je imel Reed veliko časa za razgovore z Leonardom, saj mu partizani do prvih dni novembra niso dovolili, da bi začel opravljati svoje delo. Leonard je oktobra zaprosil za vstop v NOVJ, vendar so ga -s pravim imenom Lenščak - sprejeli šele januarja 1945.
Ko Je Reed prevzel posle, ga je čisto zasula množica podatkov, zlasti o železniškem prometu, ki jo je moral obdelati in poslati dalje. Koliko so bili zanesljivi, pa ni bilo jasno.
Z minevanjem tednov so se Reedovi odnosi z vodilnimi na glavnem štabu Slovenije tako ohladili, da so postali skoraj sovražni, kar je bilo v kričečem nasprotju s prijateljskimi odnosi, ki jih Je gojil s poveljniki na glavnem štabu Hrvaške.
Tudi izkušnje ostalih britanskih zveznih častnikov v drugih predelih nekdanje Jugoslavije kažejo, da so ostali osebni odnosi na njihovih območjih v tistem času pri-srčnejši kot v Sloveniji.
Jasno je, da se je že nakazovala borba za Trst in da se je lebdel sum o možnem britanskem izkrcanju. Slovenci so ta problem čutili posebno ostro, saj je bil Trst na njihovem hišnem pragu. Čeprav se Ritchie ne spušča v to problematiko, pa lahko danes rečemo, da Britanci niso bili pripravljeni prepustiti Trsta Jugoslaviji, pa čeprav bi bila na oblasti v Beogradu kraljeva, in ne komunistična vlada.
Tako kot se Je dogajalo vsemu britanskemu osebju z misijami na Slovenskem, so tudi Reedu vedno bolj preprečevali stike s krajevnim prebivalstvom. Izjema Je bila Leonardova poroka z Mileno Bucik v začetku novembra, ko se Je imenitno zabaval.
Po njegovem merilu so partizani takrat kopičili orožje za bližnjo bitko za Trst, zato so se držali bolj defenzivno in so sovražniku celo dovoljevali, da Je osvajal njihovo ozemlje. Proti koncu novembra, kot pravi Ritchie, Je "bela garda pod nemškim vodstvom postajala vedno bolj napadalna in njeni udarni ba-
taljoni so dosegli več uspehov na račun partizanov”.
Reed in predstavnik SOE sta takrat na glavnem štabu Slovenije že doživljala hude ovire in razočaranja, zlasti v zvezi z dolgotrajnimi pogajanji, da bi dosegla premestitev dveh nemških vojnih ujetnikov v južno Italijo, da bi ju tam zaslišali, pa čeprav je bil Titov glavni štab to načelno odobril.
Na koncu, ko je bilo že jasno, da vojna ne bo več dolgo trajala, je ISLD spoznala, da bi bilo nadaljnje Reedovo delo v Sloveniji jalovo in da je najbolje, če ga odpokliče. 18. novembra je zapustil Slovenijo in se podal na Hrvaško.
Potem ko je ob osvoboditvi vkorakal v Zagreb, je začasno, približno mesec dni, opravljal službo britanskega konzula. Ko je bila mednarodna napetost zaradi Trsta na višku, pa so ga partizani v začetku junija prisilili, da je odšel.
Kasneje se Je Reed vrnil na BBC, kjer Je opravil uspešno kariero, saj je postal vodja televizijskih sporedov za otroke in potem odseka za izobraževanje kadrov.
Ritchie nudi koristne informacije o tem, kako so Britanci ocenjevali Leonardovo delo z misijo Moth. To, v kar se ne spušča, in česar verjetno ne ve, je Leonardova usoda, saj Je bil med enajstimi padalci, ki so po vojni izginili brez sledu.
