Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N. Janezovo pričevanje je najprej negativno; odpoved lastni pomembnosti, odpoved samemu sebi. Judje so pričakovali še nekoga. Vendar Janez Krstnik izjavlja, da on ni ta prerok. (prim. Oznanjevalec 2009, št. 1) 554 | VESTNIK 2023 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT R: My soul shall exult in my God. First Reading Isaiah 61:1-2. 10-11 This radiant song of praise reminds us that our experience of human love is a foretaste of the joy promised to those who open their hearts to God. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 We are reminded that we can trust God to be alive and active in our world and in our lives, come what may. Gospel John 1:6-8. 19-28 The story of John the Baptist reminds us that we also are called to give witness to Jesus and prepare a way for him wherever we are. “For as the earth sends up its shoots and a garden makes seeds sprout, so the Lord makes saving justice and praise spring up in the sight of all nations.” Illustration In winter it is difficult to believe that our gardens and fields will ever again enjoy the flowering and fruition of what has been sown in them. The ground is like stone; the earth looks dry and unyielding; and it seems as if everything has died. But keen gardeners and farmers know how to be patient and to stay hopeful that all their hard work will be rewarded come spring and summer. No true gardener or farmer spends wintertime digging down into the soil to see what is going on there. That would be the surest way to ruin a harvest. It’s a question of holding on in faith and confidence in the God of life. Advent is a time for thinking about our own preparedness to receive God’s word and God’s call in our hearts. In what way does the soil of our heart need preparing, the paths of our life need making straight? It’s also a time for reflecting on how we prepare the ground for the faith of those around us to grow and flourish. Application The prophet Isaiah uses agricultural images for an audience that lived off its own produce. Most of us nowadays live removed from such direct contact with the earth, but we know how heavily we depend on crops growing well to feed ourselves, and what a threat to the earth’s future it poses when the good health of our natural environment is ignored. Environmentalists have taught us to be alert to the signs of the times. Like John the Baptist, they are the prophets of our era, who warn us to keep awake and to prepare for the coming of God in all the calls of our day to conversion and right living. Gospel Teaching Today’s Gospel reading has clear links with the two readings that precede it. The setting is the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist as the announcer of the Messiah. John makes clear to the religious authorities that his is a preparatory role. Like a gardener or farmer, he makes the ground ready for the seed of faith to be sown to grow well and unhindered. John sees himself as the preparer of the soil where Jesus will sow the seed of God’s word and make it become flesh through his own life and ministry. In the verses that follow, we see the impact of this and the way that faith and commitment are spread. John has already prepared Philip and Andrew, who meet Jesus and are captivated by him. Immediately they call their brother and friend respectively, so Peter and Nathanael become disciples. They will in turn go out to spread God’s word and minister through healing. Faith and commitment can be contagious. Many of today’s Christians worry about the loss of faith within their families and within society. The statistics in the northern hemisphere are not encouraging – the faith and practice of previous generations seem, in some senses, to be disappearing. It requires considerable faith and self-effacement on our part to prepare the ground for the faith journey of others without having any reassurance that this will ultimately prove successful. For some of our family, friends and neighbours, we ourselves will be the only Gospel that they ever read, the only sermon they will ever hear. It’s not so much a question of thinking up clever and convincing arguments as of living our faith genuinely and convincingly. We may not always be able to use overtly religious language with those who are unable to accept it, but within the widest implications of our living justly, loving tenderly and walking humbly, there lie the seeds of faith, waiting to grow in God’s good time and in ways that perhaps only God can see. The Fourth Eucharistic Prayer prays for “all who seek you with a sincere heart [...] and all the dead, whose faith you alone have known”. Faith is found and fostered in many hidden ways. The challenge to us is to have confidence in God’s call even when we cannot see the proof. Every baptised person shares in the threefold ministry of Christ as prophet, priest and king. We are prophetic when our faiths open up paths of faith for others. We are priestly when we affirm the sacredness of life in every human person and in our universe, and we are proclaimers of the kingdom when we do justice in all our social and personal relationships. That is how Advent is lived within the world. VESTNIK 2023 | 555 556 | VESTNIK 2023 N EW Y EAR ’ S E VE C ELEBRATION LAST CHANCE to purchase your EARLY BIRD TICKETS for New Years! Steve Ryan, SDB Over the last two years in the United States, we have been asked by the bishops to concentrate on the catechesis of the Eucharist. It’s a wake-up call for Catholics to proclaim boldly that the Eucharist is the pre-eminent gift of Almighty God to mankind. It is actually the same Jesus of Nazareth who was incarnate 2,000 years ago who is present right now. The Eucharist on every altar in every tabernacle is Christ – actually present in our world. Yep, He’s here! Jesus is in our midst... He left us Himself in the Church in the form of bread and wine to guide, nourish, strengthen and empower us until the end of time. The message – wake up! Know what we’ve got! Don’t lose it! We as Church cannot go on with more and more nominal Catholics misunderstanding and even downplaying the beauty, truth and goodness of Christ’s Body and Blood in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is Christ’s true presence here on earth. There is a treasure – the TREASURE – at every Mass and in every tabernacle throughout the world. Our catechism, our doctrine is this: After consecration at holy Mass – it is really Christ in what was bread. It’s not a symbol of Jesus – it is Jesus. If the Eucharist were only a mere symbol of God, just a piece of bread, why would we be worshiping it? The famous Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor once said, “Well, if it’s only a symbol to hell with it.” So my dear readers, where are you in your understanding of the Eucharist? Do you have the correct CATHOLIC UNDERSTANDING of the Sacrament? We Catholics say it’s actually Christ! Don’t you? A Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) study/survey recently asked: “Which of the following statements best agrees with your belief about the Eucharist?” 558 | VESTNIK 2023 Option (1): Jesus Christ is really present in the bread and wine in the Eucharist. Option (2): The bread and wine are symbols of Jesus, but Jesus is not really present. Would you believe that 57% of Catholics chose the second statement? If we’re not clear about what the Eucharist is, then we’re not clear on why the Mass is important or why we should even be Catholic. Three key truths about the Eucharist, taught by the Catholic Church First, Jesus literally told us to eat his flesh and drink his blood in John 6:54-55: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” Catholics take Christ at his word. Secondly, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ at holy Mass. This understanding exists and was celebrated from the very beginning of Christianity. At the last supper Jesus said, “Take and eat. This is my body,” and of the wine he said, “Drink it. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for the forgiveness of your sins.” Thirdly, the bread and the wine look and taste like bread and wine but the elements actually change to become his Body and Blood. Catholics call this transubstantiation; it means the substance of bread changes into Christ’s flesh and the substance of wine changes into Christ’s blood, even if the accidental characteristics remain to appear as bread and wine. Bible-loving Protestant Christians, whose churches believe that sharing bread and wine at their religious services on occasions is a symbolic memorial, ought to look for evidence of the Catholic teaching in the very bible they cherish. Scripture is clear that the Eucharist is more than a symbol, but actually Christ. They might concentrate on chapter 6 of John’s Gospel – the discourse on the Bread of Life – where Jesus calmly says, “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” Last Saturday, many of us came together to start preparing for our Christmas baking. There were 17 of us who shared some laughs while making our annual Potica for Christmas. It has been a while since we all got together in the kitchen, but it was a good reminder of how much fun we have when we come together. It is a good time, not only making deliciousness, but sharing some tips and tricks of the kitchen with family and friends! Heidy We also prepared some Potica for those who prefer not to bake or just haven’t had the time. It was our first attempt and let me tell you Baking with unfamiliar ovens and larger quantities is definitely a little different. But the more we do it the better we’ll get! - Thanks to Sonya Podrebarac who took the day off to help and Marianne Škerl who came in for the save to help with the gruelling cleanup. Po maši so nadaljevali s praznovanjem v Slovenski šoli ob pici in filmu na televiziji. 560 | VESTNIK 2023 CHRISTMAS 2023 Dear Friends, We will soon celebrate the great Solemnity of The Nativity of the Lord – Christmas. Already Christmas cards are in the mail, Christmas music fills the airwaves, and Christmas décor can be seen on, and in, our homes. Christmas gifts are being exchanged. Choirs are practicing Christmas music and parishioners are beginning to decorate the churches in preparation for the Christmas liturgies. Advertisements throughout the diocese encourage Catholics to “Come Home For Christmas”! We want to welcome sisters and brothers who worship with us at Christmas, so all will experience the profound blessing of being a follower of Jesus Christ – the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, as Handel’s Messiah so beautifully proclaims! At this darkest time of the year, “Jesus is born in our midst; He is God with us. He comes to accompany our daily lives, to share with us in all things: our joys and sorrows, our hopes and fears. He comes as a helpless child. He is born in the cold night, poor among the poor. In need of everything, he knocks at the door of our hearts to find warmth and shelter.” (Pope Francis, Christmas Message 2022) During these Christmas festivities, take time to recall your blessings and give thanks in quiet prayer. When caught up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, be attentive to recognize the abundant presence of grace and goodness that surrounds you. The Lord reveals himself still in boundless acts of kindness and generosity. When you are aware of his presence through others, allow him to move you deeply, and to be generous in turn. His mercy works in and through us. As we are blessed by the goodness of others, so others are blessed by our generous acts! The 1928 Nobel Prize winning Norwegian author, Sigrid Undset, wrote this beautiful reflection on Christmas. I offer it as a gentle gift of wisdom. Our Lady of the Annunciation, pray for us!
