Jezus povabi učence
Mislim o edinosti, ki sov ospredju ta teden, se pridružuje tudi prvi del današnjega evangelija. Jezus oznanja božje kraljestvo, pa ne v Jeruzalemu, ki je veljal za čuvarja pravovernosti. Šel je v Galilejo, ki so jo imeli za napol odpadniško. Pa še v tej Galileji je šel na skrajni rob, v deželo Zabulonovo in Neftalijevo. Na te ljudi, ki so bili v stalnem stiku s prebivalci sosednjih poganskih pokrajin, so pravoverni Judje gledali s sumničavim očesom. Jezus pa se je nastanil ravno pri njih. Tako se je začasno izognil nevarnosti, ki mu je pretila v središču pravovernosti, v Judeji.
V drugem delu nam evangelist Matej riše Jezusa, kako zbira prve učence. Ta izbira je zelo neposredna. Ribiče zaloti sredi dela. Na čolnih so, mreže krpajo in jih pripravljajo, da bodo nared, ko bo treba odriniti na lov. Pri takem delu se ribiči ne dajo zlahka motiti. Jezus pa ne čaka, da delo dokončajo. Sam vrže mednje svojo mrežo. Naj vidijo, da je več in pomembnejše biti ribič ljudi kot lovec rib. Razumeli so, pustili očeta, čolne in mreže in se odpravili za njim.
Ni šlo le za zamenjavo poklica. Šlo je za nekaj več, za mnogo več, za drugačno gledanje, za spremembo mišljenja. Imeti čoln in mreže je zasebniško; iti za Jezusom in delati za božje kraljestvo pa je širšega, splošnega in skupnega pomena.
EROIKA - Trije izjemni vokalisti, zbrani v triu Eroika, so s prvim nastopom na državni proslavi v hipu osvojili Slovenijo. Matjaž Robavs (bariton), Aljaž Farasin (tenor) in Metod Žunec (tenor) so klasično izobraženi in šolani pevci, ki jih v celoto povezuje dirigent, aranžer in producent Patrik Greblo. Premišljena kombinacija talenta, lepote, uglajenosti, glasovnih zmožnosti in sveže obdelave večnih uspešnic v pop-opernem žanru je formula uspeha Eroike. O njihovi izjemni priljubljenosti pričajo razprodani koncerti ter osvojena platinasta plošča - diskografsko priznanje za izjemno prodajo njihovega prvenca. Temu je junija 2009 sledila druga studijska plošča "Nad mestom se dani", ki od izida na 1. mestu najbolj prodajanih plošč v Sloveniji kraljevala kar 14 tednov. Sledili so večkrat razprodani koncerti s simfoničnimi orkestri v največjih in osrednjih koncertnih dvoranah kot tudi prepevanje v pravtako prijetnih manjših slovenskih mestecih. Glasba Eroike je povsod sprejeta in prepoznana kot iskrena, kvalitetna in poslušljiva.

ŠALEŠKI ŠTUDENTSKI OKTET
sestavljajo študentje iz Velenja in okolice, ki so nekdaj prepevali tudi v MeMPZ Šolskega centra Velenje. V Šaleški dolini sicer spadajo med mlajše, a že uveljavljene oktete, ki s svojimi nastopi vedno pritegnejo občinstvo. Njihov program sestavljajo tako slovenske narodne pesmi kot tudi zabavne, a cappella priredbe, znanih domačih ali tujih pesmi. Poleg redne dejavnosti so izvedli že več projektov,

Da se v oktetu dobro dela, so dokazali tudi na državni reviji oktetov na Ptuju, kjer so prejeli nagrado za najboljši sestav revije, svoj pogled na poklice v času recesije pa so uspešno predstavili na sklepnem koncertu tematskega programa Sozvočenja v Slovenski fi lharmoniji.

v družbi svojih najbližnjih obhajala 50. obletnico poroke. Sveto mašo sta obhajala skupaj z drugimi slavljenci v mesecu novembru v stolnici v St. Catharines.
Ob njunem zlatem jubileju jima želimo vse najboljše, še na mnoga zdrava leta v skupnem življenju. Naj ju spremlja božji blagoslov, da bosta zgled vsem mladim, ki stopajo na to pot.

Situated on the border between England and north Wales, the historic city of Chester traces its origins back to Roman times. Just seventy-five years or so after the birth of Christ, Roman soldiers built a fort beside the River Dee. The town of Chester grew up round it and quickly became an important centre for crafts and commerce. Chester even had its own amphitheatre where, like in the Colosseum in Rome, spectators could be entertained by gladiators. During the Middle Ages, Chester became an important religious centre, attracting Dominicans, Franciscans and Carmelites. It continued to develop and today remains an important English city. However, one of its greatest claims to fame was only started in 1930. What began as the North of England Zoological Society is now more popularly known as Chester Zoo. With over seven thousand animals, it is one
of the largest zoos in Europe. But one section in particular offers a special insight into the life of a certain kind of creature.
Called the "Twilight Zone", one of the large enclosures is home to two species of bat. There might not seem anything special in that, except visitors enter the large, covered, forest-like space and walk through the trees while the bats fly freely around. Because bats are nocturnal animals, the whole experience takes place in almost complete darkness. As people walk through the trees the bats fly around, sometimes very close, using a sophisticated system of echo navigation to avoid hitting any objects. For some visitors the experience of walking through the darkness, with bats flying around them, is just too much and they rush towards the exit and out into the light.
Gospel Teaching
St Matthew tells us that by settling in Capernaum, "a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali", Jesus fulfilled the words of the prophet Isaiah. This is quite a startling affirmation. Without saying or doing anything particularly spectacular, Jesus fulfilled a prophecy in the scriptures by staying in a certain place. How can we understand this?
Zebulun and Naphtali were ancient Israelite tribes that settled in Galilee. During the time of the prophet Isaiah, these were the first two tribes to be crushed by the invading Assyrians. The people of Israel were subjected to the darkness of oppression, ruled by a foreign power that worshipped false gods. But Isaiah looked forward to a new king in
"The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light."
Jerusalem who would come and set Israel free, who would bring the light of hope to a people who walked in darkness.
For St Matthew, Jesus is this new king. Jesus is the one who has come to call people from darkness into the light of a relationship with him. Preaching a message of repentance, Jesus brings the kingdom of God close in his very person. The fishermen of the Sea of Galilee instinctively and immediately responded to the invitation of Jesus. Whatever darkness meant to them, they saw and met in Jesus a great light. It is a wonderful testimony to their generosity that when the light of God's merciful love dawned on them they left everything and followed him.
Application
We too have experiences of walking in darkness. We don't have to walk through an enclosure of bats to feel uncomfortable or afraid. Simple everyday things can weigh on our mind: paying the bills; waiting to see the doctor; worrying about a loved one; trying to mend a friendship; coping with the past. Whenever we have a sense of walking in darkness, we can take courage from the great light that has come into the world. Whatever shadows might fall across our lives, Jesus is the one who calls our name and invites us to tread in his steps. However we experience fear of the dark, we can take to heart the words of Blessed Charles de Foucauld: "One thing we owe to our Lord is never to be afraid."

Practices for this energetic group have been moved to Saturdays at 12:30 [following slovenska sola] starting on January 22nd. We encourage all children, ages 7 and above, to join this worthwhile group to help nurture our Slovenian roots and help build our community here in Hamilton and surroundings. More singing and musical instruments are on the agenda. New members most welcome!
Any one who might be able to help or has an interest in Slovenian costuming is asked to contact a member of VENEC, or Dave Antolin: 905.664.5980.
We are trying to organize a seminar to help teach aspects of costume making to participants in the future. Also, any ladies who practice the art of 'kleklanje' are asked to contact Dave Antolin. We have a special project that we need help with.

Important Notice: St.Gregory the Great Catholic Women's League Annual Parish Bazaar will be held on Sunday Feb.27. A date change had to be made to accommadate and maintain our Slovenian tradition of Pustovanje. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year where we depend on all of our membership to contribute to its success to the best of their abilities. It is our responsibility as league sisters to help one another reach our goal of hosting a successful bazaar. Also and equally important we could not be successfull without the support of our parish members, their families and friends. We will be working hard over the next few months to create a fun afternoon for all to share and enjoy eachothers company.
At this time we would also kindly ask for your consideration to donating new Penny Sale and Raffle table items that you may have purchased or crafted.
Lottery Tickets: Our lottery tickets are ready for purchase at all Sunday masses from Pamela Gognach and Angela Kobe. We kindly ask for your support by purchasing our lottery tickets. All monies raised from the sales are directly donated to our parish.

POKOJNI_
-	V ponedeljek, 17. januarja 2011 je v 90. letu starosti v Orchard Terrace Care Centre, umrla naša faranka MARIJA KOLENC. Pokojna je bila zelo vključena v župnijsko dogajanje, Pevka v zboru, članica Oltarnega društva in je med zadnjimi stvarmi nakleklala čipke za oltarne prte v naši cerkvi. Marija je stara mama naših ministrantk Mihaele, Mateje, Maje in Mirjam. V četrtek zvečer smo se zbrali k molitvi v Donald Brown Funeral Home na Lake Ave. Pogrebno sveto mašo smo obhajali v petek 21. januarja ob 10:00 a.m. v naši cerkvi. Pogreb pa je bil na Gate of Heaven slovenskem delu pokopališča. Iskreno sožalje sinu Matiju in vsem sorodnikom. Naj bo Gospod pokojni Mariji bogat plačnik za vse dobro, ki ga je storila za našo župnijo; večna luč naj ji sveti in naj počiva v božjem miru.
-	V petek, 21. januarja ponoči je po daljši bolezni v Gospodu zaspal naš faran ANTON VENGAR. Bil je 84. letu starosti. Pokojni bo ležal v Smith's Funeral Home na Guelph Line, Burlington v nedeljo 23. januarja od 1:30 - 4:30 in 6 - 9 p.m., ob osmih zvečer se bomo zbrali k molitvi rožnega venca. Pogrebna sveta maša bo v naši župniji v ponedeljk, 24. januarja ob deseti uri dopoldne, nato pogreb na pokopališču Gate of Heaven. Iskreno sožalje ženi Tilki ob izgubi moža in hčerki Rose Marie in sinu Tony-ju. Pokojnemu pa večni mir in pokoj.
-	METOD KUZMA, brat naših faranov Toneta, Cirila Kuzma in Jožice Vlašič. Umrl je v Sloveniji, star 53 let. Pogreb je bil v petek 21. januarja v Adlešičih v Beli krajini. V petek smo za pokoj njegove duše opravili tudi sveto mašo. Vsem sorodnikom iskreno
sožalje, pokojnega pa se spomnimo v naših molitvah.
-	MARIJA HORVAT, sestra našega farana Jožeta Ftičarja. Doma je iz Hotize, umrla pa je v bolnici v Mariboru. Pokojna je bila v 84. letu. Pogreb je v nedeljo, 23. januarja. V torek zvečer bomo opravili zanjo daritev svete maše.

PRAYING WITH NEW WORDS: INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL
In 2002, Pope John Paul II issued a new edition of the Roman Missal, which has now been translated into English and will be introduced to Canadian parishes later this year. Many familiar texts which we use at Mass have been changed in the process of translation to more accurately express what is found in the official Latin text.
Come and explore the changes and the reasons behind them on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Cathedral of Christ the King, Hamilton. Cost: $10 per person; lunch included. Registration forms available at the parish office. Space is limited, so register early.
