Creator of the cit map: Valentina Lovrin THE MAP OF ZEBRA’S TRAVELS Let’s talk about the creation of the city. About 4000 years ago people started creating pile settlements on the north edge of the marshes. When the old Roman soldiers came to these regions, they first built military camps. The city was given the name EMONA. About 770 years ago, this city which lays between the river Ljubljanica and the castle hill was renamed to LJUBLJANA. In the past few centuries the city when through a lot of changes: visits from multiple important emperors, kings and queens, a lot of important sport and cultural events for children and for slightly bigger children (mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers). The city was struck with earthquakes and floods. For us residents and for the large number of tourists, Ljubljana is very special to us. MAP LEGEND: 1. CONGRESS SQUARE 2. WOLFOVA ULICA 1. The castle used to protect the city from various conquerors, the Turks and Puntars. The first of the princes descended from the bloodline of the Spanheims. Princes, their spouses and their children lived here. Knights from the middle ages used to get together in the knight’s hall. Musicians used to play wind instruments from the lookout post every evening. They played the instruments during important happy and not-so-happy events. At the times of Turkish incursions they warned the citizens with their instruments. You can reach the castle by foot, with a car or with a cable car. “In old Ljubljana, they had woodwind musicians, each played their instrument differently. The callers were buzzing everyday, three on all four sides, and the horn was playing all for nothing” (Niko Grafenauer) Can you imagine all those ladies which lived in the castle, walking around in the castle park and talking with those handsome knights? - Oh, it must have been so lovely. 7 Draw the LJUBLJANA CASTLE. Who used to live in the castle? How can we reach the castle? 8 NEW BEACH Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Yes, you heard it right – there’s a beach in the city, although it’s not as big as those next to the sea. This is where tired travelers rest and look at the beautiful houses, which stand on the edge of the river Ljubljanica. Most of the houses are about a couple of hundred years old. Some of them are renovated, some aren’t. They look very unique with their windows, doors, balconies and roofs. Take a look at their shy reflection on the surface of the water. During the summer, the water’s surface is usually unruly, as there’s a lot of boats sailing on the river. One can take a tour of the town on them for a different perspective. One of the boat’s name is Ponirek (A reference to the cartoon Peter Pan, the boy who never wanted to grow up). From here we take a walk on the Čevljarski most bridge, past Tranče, where we turn right on Gornji trg street. CHECK THE MAP ! 9 Draw the boat and name it. What’s the name of the boat which references Pete Pan? What’s the name of the boy who never wanted to grow up? 10 UPPER SQUARE Photo: Valentina Lovrin This square is one of the oldest parts of the city. This is where the main road used to go through, which drove from the Gorenjska and Štajerska regions, to the Dolenjska and Primorska regions. The oldest driving road to the castle hill lays in the Upper square. It was used for transporting food, drinks and other resources to the castle residents. Answer the questions. To where did the main road used to lead? Is this square one of the oldest part of the city? What do you like most about Upper square? 11 Continuing the way across Upper square. We are soon approaching the store Zebra Gre na Luno – Zebra goes to the Moon. Ohoho, if you turn around, you’ll notice my home. I would love to invite you over for a short visit. My friends will happily serve you with some tea, juice and tasty cookies. I’ll just catch my breath, since this trip has worn me out. Photo: Valentina Lovrin Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Enter the store! What did you like most about the store? 12 Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren THIS IS WHERE ZEBRA’S TRIP ENDS, BUT IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN CONTINUE THE TOUR! DO YOU WISH TO KEEP TRAVELLING? NO/YES THANKS FOR COMING TO CONTINUE THE TRIP 13 Yipee, Zebra is very happy, that you chose to continue with the trip. I promise you won’t regret it. You will soon see what awaits us. In front of you, there’s a map. If you want to continue the trip, follow the way circled in black, and you will reach Congress square. I’m wishing you luck on answering the questions. 14 CONGRESS SQUARE Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren We will start the trip on the square, which used to be one of the main parking spaces a few decades ago. CONGRESS – according to the Dictionary of Slovenian Literary Language*, it’s defined as something akin to an important meeting. 200 years ago, when the French emperor Napoleon lost his leadership in France and revolutions started to form in Europe, the Austrian and Russian emperor along with the Prussian King agreed to a congress in Ljubljana. The congress was about planning on the future of Europe, since Napoleon’s reign was over. The congress took place in year 1821. Along with other various meetings, there were a lot of different events in Ljubljana – dances, fairs, parades, theater and the likes. This is how Congress square got it’s name. Now look into the direction of the castle hill. In front of you on the left there’s the start of a narrow street called Wolfova ulica street (it got it’s name from one of Ljubljana’s bishops). CHECK THE MAP ! 15 Draw the park on CONGRESS SQUARE. Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Drawings of the children of Primary School ZGNL. Drawn: Andrej Žnidarič Drawn: Gašper, OŠ ZGNL Answer the questions. Which year did the congress take place and why? What’s the definition of the word CONGRESS? 16 PREŠEREN SQUARE Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren The monument of France Prešeren is located on Prešeren square. Oh, Zebra, Zebra… I almost forgot, I started to talk about which direction miss Julija was looking at and why? Julia was the poets unresponsive love interest. She was from a rich marketing family, and the poet was poor and a “rhymer”, as the people used this term to berate poets. If you look closely, you can see that Prešeren’s monument is looking at Julia, and vice versa. Oh, such unfulfilled love… On the square you will find a model of Ljubljana, which is made out of a bronze material. It was installed in year 1991, at first just for a month, as a test. Well, since I’m a zebra, I can’t help but wonder if a month takes longer than 30 days for you humans? Either way, the model has been there for 26 years, and it brings the attention of a lot of people. You can see the houses, streets, bridges and everything that belongs in a city on a smaller scale and from a birds-eye view. Prešeren square is also a popular gathering spot of the natives and tourists. This is where a lot of concerts are set up, it’s a place where they set a starting and/or finishing line for marathons, and this is where you can take a gander of the fireworks show during the New year. You can see talented musicians gather there and play music every day. 17 Draw, what you like about the square. Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Drawings of the children of Primary School ZGNL. Illustration: Armin Kečmanović, 2.B Illustration: Karolina Kočevar, 2.B Answer the questions. Where is the location of Robb’s Well? Who did the sculptor Robb fall in love with? 18 TROMOSTOVJE Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren On Prešeren square we can look at the river Ljubljanica. Three bridges, named Tromostovje, cross over the river. The bridges were planned and built by architect Jože Plečnik. He also renewed the old bridge (Špitalksi most bridge), then added additional bridges on each side for pedestrians. Now let’s jump across the bridges to the other side, but first, answer these questions. CHECK THE MAP ! 19 Draw TROMOSTOVJE. Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Answer the questions. Which river can we see on Prešeren square? Who planned and built the Tromostovje? For who are the left and right bridges meant for? What’s the other name for the Old bridge? No, leta 1988 so poroke »preselili« na grad. V pritličju hiš na Mestnem trgu so po večini trgovine in lokali (kavarne, bistroji, dnevni bari). Vsaka hiša v sebi skriva svojo zgodbo. Včasih nam jo razodene, drugič spet ne. Vse hiše so prave meščanske in plemiške hiše. Na trgu se velikokrat sliši glasba in največkrat so tu sprejemi naših odličnih športnikov. (On the Town square, children can sit on the stairs along the fountain or in front of the town hall. They can draw small details of beautiful city houses standing in the market, pitching on a well that resembles our rivers, and they can find all the narrow streets that lead from the square to river Ljubljanica - Ribji trg square, Locksmith Street, Krojaška ulica street and find out why these streets have these names) 21 What happens on the square ? Photo: Valentina Lovrin Answer the questions. Who is the mayor of Ljubljana ? In which year did the marriages move into the castle ? 22 ROBB’S FOUNTAIN Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Zebras usually live in Africa, and there you can see the moon at night very nicely. What’s epecially beautiful is the first or last part of the Moon, when you have the feeling that the Moon invites you to sit on its edge and it takes you along with it into the vast universe ... Oops, of course ... we are not in Africa, but in beautiful Ljubljana. Yes, my thoughts of the moon were triggered by the shape of the Town Square, which surrounds the the castle hill. The square was built in the Middle Ages. It received it’s present image some 250 years ago. The Robb fountain stands proudly on the square. Well, the original is in the National Gallery, this is just it’s substitute. It’s name is by the sculptor who made it - Francesco Robba. He was born in Italy and was taught sculpting by various masters, and route also took him to Ljubljana. Prešeren was right to write about the beautiful women in Ljubljana – here we have even more proof. The sculptor Robba fell in love with the stonecutters daughter. He stayed in Ljubljana, and from there he also made sculptures in Zagreb, Graz/Gradec and other major places around the general area. Robb’s fountain of three Carniolan rivers presents three Slovene rivers: Ljubljanica, Sava and Krka. 23 Draw Robb’s fountain: Photo: SŠ ZGNL schoolchildren Answer the questions. Nika Curk and Ana Medved are students of the 4th year of the Faculty of Architecture. The first is studying theater and stage design while the other is studying music. They are primarily associated with the love of photography and literature, and the integration of various artistic genres. That is why, from a short-term workshop at the faculty, they insisted on the Travel Diary project and Nika Curk helped the team of the Institute for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing to create the booklet that’s in front of you. The project was essentially the idea of a one-week workshop, under the mentorship of the architects Maruša Zorec, Špela Kuhar, Matjaž Bolčina and Uroš Rustje. In conjunction with Zebra Gre Na Luno and ZGNL mentors and pupils, students, together with their classmates, developed the idea of a Travel Diary to guide locals and tourists across Ljubljana and give them a unique perspective of a Ana Medved city that is not just generic. About the creator... 35 My name is Nik, I am currently finishing a secondary vocational education course MEDIA TECHNICIAN. In elementary school I went to the Primary School Gradec. Soon I started attending various projects in elementary school, where there was a considerable emphasis on design. Somehow the route led me to decide that I would like Nik Zupančič to be educated as a designer, where I can use my imagination. I could see this being my career for life. I decided on this project because I would like to present my work to the general public with my ideas and products, but above all, I want people from this booklet ‘’ Guide to Ljubljana ‘’ to learn something more, something they did not know before. In particular, this is also a challenge that I want to achieve. The booklet is intended for both adults and children, where the graphics that may have been most attracted by the graphics that were made out of the hands of primary school children. The project presents itself as some kind of challenge to me, as a test to see if I am able to accomplish it successfully and give it my all. Above all, I find this project quite interesting, since I have learned other skills through the process of creating it. I wish you success in fulfilling your tasks to learn something and to acquire some new knowledge..
