It is in our hands
There was much talk at the beginning of August of this year aboul the first atomic explosion, which took place forty years ago. Everybody who talked about it, said: It should never happen again! This is easy to say, but hard to believe; today there are many nations that possess the atomic bomb; back then, the United States was the only one.
If we are realistic we know that all this talk does not mean much. Let’s say that at least one third of the human race believes in God, and that our planet is the work of His creative hand. Would this “Good Father” as we call Him, allow His masterpiece to be destroyed because one or two leaders decide to use these weapons! No! We hear that wars were punishment for the sins people committed. This was already in the Old Testament. We Christians believe in a God who cares for us and who loves us. Therefore if catastrophy does come, it will come because of the behavoir of the human race. In the psalms we read that God changes fruitful land into a desert, because of the sins of its inhabitants; and wasteland into fruitful ground for the God fearing people.
People can talk and protest against the atomic bomb, but nothing much will change; what really matters is the stale of the human race before God. Peoples of all ages fashioned their own future with their lives. Therefore it is in our hands to destroy ourselves or to prevent catastrophy by turning to God. Since Humanity is facing thousands of atomic bombs, not only two as did Japan in 1945, it should be our greatest concern to work for peace with God, the only One who can guarantee us peace.
The Slovenian Women’s Union was established to do good and help the people around us; the greatest good we can achieve in our time — is peace!
Eveleth, Minnesota and the second on September 22 in Greenfield, Wisconsin. In Eveleth the crowd of ladies in attendance numbered about 270 and in Greenfield about 200. It was a pleasure to celebrate the liturgy fot these two groups. It is always good to come together and listen to each other, but most of all to be strengthen by the presence and enthusiasm of the members. In addition it is encouraging to listen lo different speeches and remarks, because in them one hears the echo of the ladies who started this Union.
In November our thoughts go to the persons who started so many things. First to our parents and grandparents who were the tools in the hand of the Almighty that we were born, and also to our teachers who were responsible for our education. Also in this month we remember all the brave women, especially Mrs. Prisland, who started something that still brings good fruit. Usually we consider life as short span of sixty, seventy or eighty years, and then everything is over. Not by God. All who lived in history are not dead, and all they accomplished is still with us, still bringing good fruit.
We do read in Holy Scripture, that “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living!” Many things we saw in the past were changed and replaced. Nothing in nature remains the same, not even the face of the earth. Similarly, the history of the human race is changing sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Right now we see that many fruits of our society are not good; but we can be sure that even in our days there arc many who bring good fruii. We all enjoy many things that came lo us from past generations.
As we are praying with gratiiude for our loved ones who passed into eternity, lei us not forget that whaiever we do now, whether good or bad, will bring fruit in the future. By God nothing is lost, because God is the God of the living!

President’s Message
November, 1985
Greetings in the month of first frost and snow in some parts of (his vast land of ours with many opportunities for work and pleasure.
Many cards of greeting were received from vacationing friends and members, especially enjoyed by the home bound. Some have gone overseas and we would like to see them write in Zarja about their travels. How about it, Corinne?
We have branches experiencing hardship finding new officers. Hopefully, our younger members will accept the yoke and carry on in the tradition of our founders. Some members are lax in paying dues — this is extremely difficult for secretaries to keep their branch business in good order. This is a responsibility and should be attended to.
Word has come to me that at some State Conventions the members would like to meet every two years. This is one of our by-laws and only the convention meetings can consider this. I he annual State Conventions are good for bringing members together to discuss
various problems; many times suggestions are offered which are helpful and informative. We need the togetherness. 1 would ask you to reconsider your thinking.
It is not to early to start thinking about our National Convention (—	1987). Write your feelings and
suggestions for, perhaps, some changes. This is the time for new ideas, I assure you, I will welcome any interest shown for the betterment of SWU. Please write to me at: 8021 E. Osborn Rd., Apt. 103B, Scottsdale, Az. 85251.

We have many ailing members — please remember them in your prayers or by cards and visits.
During the month of November, we remember our beloved deceased. In the past month we have lost two members who were diligent workers for SWU for many years, namely: Josephine Erjavec, past National Officer and Mary Bostian, past National President.
On August 27, 1985 God called to Himself one of our most diligent Zveza workers, Francesca (Fanika) Humar, National Secretary during the years 1970-76. Our condolences to their families. May the Lord accept them and all of our loved ones into His Heavenly abode for all eternity.

FAREWELL, MARY BOSTIAN
WE MOURN MAR Y BOSTIAN, FORMER NA TIONAL PRESIDENT
Called to her heavenly reward on Sept. 21, 1985. Mary Bostian (nee Kokely) was horn in Pleasant Valley, Pa. She came to Cleveland in 1926. Being an ambitious young lady, she and her husband operated food markets and later, for a short time, a beautiful lounge in Florida.
Her last 25 years were entirely devoted to the Slovenian Women's Union. She first became a member of Br. Mo. 50. Later she transferred to Br. No. 32 at the suggestion of the late Albina Novak, when at that time a few of the branches needed a lift, and Mary came thru like a spark plug!!!
As president for Br. No. 32 she did a marvelous job and enrolled many new members.
After a few successful years, she became Ohio/Michigan Regional President for 6 years. It wasn't too long when she was recognized for her S. W. U. ambition, that she was elected National President at the 16th National Convention — and held that office for 2 terms
—	1974 to 1979.
As National President she devoted a lot of time and effort for the benefit of S. W. U., attended all the Combined Branch meetings, corresponded with all the Branches in the States, constantly encouraging them with good ideas. Mary excelled in generosity. She organized the Dawn Choral Club and SWU Twirlettes, Children's Bowling teams and Drill Teams who are still performing today.
Members of Branch 32 gathered at Zele's Funeral Parlor to bid farewell to our member. Mary Bostian, past president.
As president, / can only speak of the 6 years I knew Mary although in this tirne she was very ill. Cards, flowers, food plus visits from her sister-members was our way of thanking Mary for her many years of hard work Jor the branch. She really did many ncie things for us.
All the beautiful tributes at the wake and funeral showed the respect she very much deserved.
Our Guards were there and our SWU Twirlettes, too, standing at attention, looking so grown up. And these young girls, under tIndirection of Mary Genile, brought a remembrance of flowers, a bouquet of blue and white carnations, their colors, as Mary was their organizer.
Br. 32 sent red carnations and offered many prayers for the repose of her soul.
State President, Ann Tercek did the honors as State President to hid a fond farewell in tribute. Her girls and Guards were great.
To the branches that paid their respects, also the Dawn Choral singers, Br. 32 extends thanks.
May her soul and all the departed souls rest in peace.

In the last five years, illness began to take over, starting with emphysema. Oxygen tanks were installed in her home to help her breathe. In December, 1983 it was diagnosed that Mary had cancer of the mouth. After many required treatments she had to have extensive surgery.
Being on the road to recovery she had the misfortune of falling and fracturing her hip, which meant surgery again. All in all, her heart weakened and emphysema set in again. The good Lord called Mary home where there is no more suffering. Praise God!!!
Mary had many people paying respect at the wake, especially from many S.W.U. branches, including the Twirlettes, No. 50 and No. 32 Cadets and her beloved Dawn Choral Group who sang two beautiful songs — “V nebesih sem doma” and “Gozdič je že zelen. ” I'm sure Mary would be happy to see all her wonderful work still going strong, with that winning smile on her happy face.
Mary’s late husband, Anthony (Tony) preceded her in death in December, 1983.
Burial Mass was at St. Mary's Church (Collinwood) with the Rev. Fr. Victor Tome officiating. Beautiful singing was done by Tillie Spehar and Antonia Lamovec.
Thank you. Dear Mary. You will always be remembered for your kind and thoughtful work for Slovenian Women's Union. You now have your reward in Heaven — May you rest in peace and let the perpetual light shine upon you. You deserve it! This is a wish from all of your friends, especially those from the Slovenian Women's Union!

REPORT OF CLEVELAND COMBINED BRANCHES
Welcome to a new season! I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our S.W.U. Branches. With our beautiful summer gone, it’s time to get back to business with meetings and activities in our “Slovenian Women’s Union.”
It was a busy year trying to attend meetings with all the 13 branches in the Greater Cleveland area. It was my pleasure for the first time to attend Branch No. 101 ’s meeting in Bedford, Ohio. Our 3 officers from Branch No. 50 also accompanied me there. They (Branch No. 101) had a good group in attendance. There was quite a discussion with questions and answers, especially what is the purpose of our Zveza and how to attract younger members besides trying to obtain new ones in all classes. 1 do hope 1 was of some help to them. The officers do a good job keeping their branch together.
1 also had the opportunity to attend several branches’ “Mother-of-the-Year” Luncheons/Dinners. They are as follows: Branch No. 25 honored Marie Telich at Sterle’s Country House. They had a large attendance including twenty Branch No. 50 members. Branch No. 10 honored Mary Podlogar and her mother Anna Tomsic at Fannie’s Restaurant. They also had a large group. All were happy together and we shared some nice jokes and laughter. Branch No. 32 honored Dorothy Lamm with a delicious prepared dinner at Slovenian Society Home (Recher). The dinner was prepared by their member, Mary Ster. All the officers of Branch No. 50 attended and also some men were present. Branch No. 14 honored Jennie Fitzhum, also at Slov. Society Home (Recher) with a delicious dinner prepared by member, Mary Dolsak. A large number of their members are elderly ladies and so sweet and so nice to be with. New President, Marty Koren, is doing well although she is a recent new member as this is all new to her. Keep it up, Marty! Get well wishes to Secretary, Donna Tome!
Our S.W.U. Euclid Twirlettes were on the go all spring and summer. They participated in many, many parades and festivals and believe it or not came up with “First Place” honors/trophies everytime. This is a futile job in trying to keep together about 40 young people, to be able to travel and perform in all parts of Ohio and also out-of-town.
Dorothy Hodnichak had to give up her job as director, but was fortunate to get two very capable men to take over. They are Tim Mathas and Marty Zadorozny. We welcome the both of you and you are to be commended for all of your interest in taking over this wonderful group of girls. Also to Mary Gentile, their instructor who has been doing such a super job for years! “Thank You, Dorothy” for still keeping in touch giving your good guidance! The Twirlettes are all members of Branch No. 32 of Euclid.
Now with summer over, it’s time to hit the books (school books, that is)! Many of our young people are back to school. We had five lucky young students who received the S.W.U. Scholarship Awards. I’m very pleased to announce that 2 Cleveland girls, Judy Stražišar, Br. 47 and Cynthia Blum, Br. 21, were recipients of a $1,000 award each. It pays to study, doesn’t it? Congratulations, Judy and Cynthia!
Last but not least, our Ohio-Michigan State Convention was planned for October 27th, at the usual place. A 10:30 A.M. Mass at St. Mary’s Church on 15519 Holmes Avenue, (Collinwood). Following the mass a luncheon was to be served in the school cafeteria and the meeting afterward.
As this is an important day for all of us including branch members to attend, we were looking forward to seeing the branches from Girard, Barberton, Niles, Lorain, Warren and Michigan, too. It’s always nice to see all of you from near and far.
“Get Well Wishes” go to Activities Director, Albina Uehlein of Lorain. Our prayers are with you and we miss you at our Combined Branch meetings.

f Katie Triller
November 25, 1888-April 10, 1985
A part of Zveza lived in Katie Triller. She became a member at the first organizational meeting in 1926 and shortly afterward, the first SWU National Vice-President. Her energies focused on South Chicago where she founded Branch 16 and became its president and leader in the ensuing years. Katie’s hospitable nature and forceful determination influenced many young women to come into the membership as participants in their bowling teams, branch committees and drill teams. It was the beginning of the great history of Br. 16.
Admiration for Katie remained long after she left her activities behind and lived to a peaceful old age. She has always been remembered with love and respect.
In this her birthday month, we remember again and pray for her eternal happiness.

WISHING EVERYONE A Happy Thanksgiving!
Have you ever “sorted” out a drawerful of old snapshots? Well that’s the extent of my work nowadays. How one drawer could be a disaster is beyond me. Of course, four children didn’t help any. The best thing that happened was that the liner was “leftover” wallpaper and not dated, so who knows when it was last sorted out! It took me a month of good days to do this!
It has been one of the best jobs I’ve ever had to do. I relived the past a hundred times. Like a story on T.V., only on silent film!
First, there were our own baby pictures in our parents’ arms and then me hanging on to my dad’s strong thumb. What happened between that and 8th grade graduation I don’t know, because then came a lot of clowning around on “teenage” pictures while being active in the B.V.M. Sodality. Next came a very active part of my life, when the drill team years took over and molded a part of my life. This is when I realized how big our “S.W.U.” was as it spread across our nation and at my first Convention in Chisholm with my mother in 1939. I met women from everywhere that I still have as friends today.
Our marriage changed our lives completely, followed by long war, and tons of letters and pictures. We finally were able to settle down to a life of our own with our own children.
Now all these pictures will be divided 4 ways so the whole family will have their own “show” and remember nice times when they “clean” their picture drawer!
I’m sure many of our members can tell this same story and did get as much fun out of telling it as I. But, can you imagine taking a month to clean a drawer?
After reading this article,
I noticed that somethin); was missing...
Mom, you didn’t mention how much love was filled up in that drawer. Years and years of cherished memories,, happy, sad, beautiful, but more importantly
—	loving. <Of course, tTtat’s a whole separate article). You were saying it in a round-about way, but I wanted to say it in a more direct way.
The last couple of months have been even harder than the last two years have been for all of us, but especially so for you and Daddy. We want you to know how very proud we are of your courage to fight so hard.
You have given us so much, how very blessed we have been. I love you both, bunches and bunches.

We do have a lot to be thankful for after seeing and reading about all the devastation around the world, while missing some of our areas. We must help these people and anyone else in need whether young or old.
There are important months coming up, with election of officers in our branches. Please remember to help by taking some of the open jobs so that our lodges stay alive. They are the backbone of our society and heritage. We would be lost without them. If you think what they did for our parents and us, nothing can compare to it. These lodges helped people through hardships and through fun times. The people that belonged to SWU taught each other to help others. Perhaps if we go back and repeat this, it would be a better world to live in. Today there is so much mistrust, cheating, and stealing in everyday dealing that it is almost scarry thinking about it.
Thanksgiving is truly a good time to start thinking positively in every direction.

Greetings! At the October meeting members were reminded of the Founders Mass and with a breakfast meeting.
Dorothy Brezonik gave a report on the card party and thanked everyone for their cooperation.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned and a Halloween party was held, which was enjoyed by all.
A group from our branch attended the State Convention held in Milwaukee hosted by Branch No. 43 and we were extended a most cordial welcome.
The next Wis. Regional State Convention will be held in Sheboygan, September 28,	1986.
Please, members, keep this date in mind.
Our condolences to families and friends of Mesdames:	Josephine
Erjavec and Mary Bostian. They dedicated many of their years to the S.W.U. as National Supreme Officers. May their Souls and all (he departed rest in peace!
We lost a member, Mary Zahn in death. Our deep sympathy to her husband, Jacob and daughter Margaret. May the eternal light shine upon her.
The annual meeting will be held December 12th, proceeded by a Mass at 6 p.m. and with a Pot Luck concluding with the meeting and Christmas party. All members are cordially invited to attend.

Bishop Baraga Days this year were held ai Mackinac Island, Michigan, Aug. 30, Sept. 1-2. Two bus loads left St. Stephen’s at 5:30 a.m., Aug. 30, for the journey. Mass look place on Sat. at the Mackinac Holel Theatre with procession from Mass to St. Ann’s Shrine and concluded with rosary and benediction.
Mass look place Sun. followed by a banquet and annual meeting of the Baraga Association. The trip was enjoyed by all. Tony Gaber was chosen “Man of the Year” at the Baraga Days celebration.
Sick List: Lil Otrin (hospitalized at Mackinac Island); Frances Kozclj and Sally Kavcic had slight mishaps; Hilda Thoren; Luba Troha; Louis Pasderetz (minor surgery); Angie Koziarz’ husband is back in the hospital. Please remember these and all the sick in your prayers.
Our sympathies also to Clara and Erna Lesza on the death of their mother, Angela, who was 96 yrs. old; Mrs. Galassin, on the death of her husband, also 96 yrs old; Angie Koziarz, on the death of her sister, and Kay Turner on the death of her brother. Carmen Callo. Victoria Holozan also passed away; she was the sister of Justine Holozan. Please remember these in your prayers.
The “balloon send-off” contest from our summer picnic has a winner: Mrs. Svetich, from Chicago. Her balloon landed in Buffalo, NY. Other balloons were spotted at these locations: Kenton, Ohio; Demotte, Ind.; Valpariso, Ind.; and Kouts, Ind.
Vacations: Corinne Leskovar in Slovenia...Frances Jasbec visiting her two daughters in Utah and Oregon.
Omitted from last month’s column: Ann Mladic is grandmother twice and Anna Gaber, great grandmother. Congratulations!
I’d like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to all those members who sent cards, phone calls, prayers and many good wishes while 1 was ill. Your kindness was sincerely appreciated.
Our Sept. meeting was well attended with a number of guests in attendance. Officers and friends from Joliet branch, Olga Ancel and Millie Pucel, and Mary Putzel. Also in attendance were Mary Vrhovnik’s mother, Mary Slabe, of Worth, 1L, Bernice Taucher of Cicero, IL, Irene Smith of Long Beach, CA, and Caroline Stanonik of Madison, Ohio.
Our flag was draped in remembrance of our deceased members, and a prayer was said by the membership.
On the sick list we have Lil Otrin, Hilda Thorn, and Angela Simec. Also Rose Zielinski’s husband in the
hospital, and Angie Koziarz’ husband who is very ill. Pray for all the sick and the shut-ins, and those in nursing homes Mass for the ailing will be on Nov. 13th at the 8:00 a.m. Mass. Please try and attend.
Our picnic proceeds were divided by the members as follows: $750 to the scholarship fund - $500 to the heritage fund - and $2,500 to the Baraga research. Our goal for the Baraga project for the year is $5,000 with plans for other affirs to raise more money. Fr. Vendclin is the chairperson for the Baraga research.
Drawing for the dinner with Mike Morison was held and the winner is Barbara Wardinski.
The penny social will be held on Nov. 14th at 7:00 p.m. Don’t forget your prizes, cakes, and friends, and also your floats if your making one. The floats’ size should approx. be 8 in. x 15 in. suitable for table decorations. The theme is “Mardi Gras”; Sharon Nedjuines is chairlady. Please offer your help to make this a success.
Mike Morison, Sharon and Joanne Hozzian will chair the children’s Christmas party and Ann Sam will host the adult party.
A copy, machine valued at $1,500 was donated to the branch. A thunk you to the donor.
Our sympathy to Olga Ancel on the loss of her mother, Mrs. Erjavec, National Secretary. Remember her in your prayers.
Paintings were on display by Mike, along with ohter articles of interest. Mike talked about the astronauts and the friendships he made with Jim Erwin and other astronauts. The weather man has been playing some crazy tricks on us and it seems no part of the country is excluded. What a shock it was to wake up the morn of Sept. 30th and see the trees in our yard laden with heavy snow. I really enjoy winter but not in September!
Our Minn. State Convention was hosted by Br. 19, Eveleth on Sept. 8th. We had excellent representation from all branches. At the business meeting, we had good discussion on pertinent topics concerning S:W.U. and it’s various projects.
We were all delighted to have our Spiritual Advisor, Rev.Athanasius Lovrenčič, O.F.M., with us. His pleasant smile and good humor warmed the hearts of the members present. In his message, he pointed out our roles as women in setting good Christian example as wives and mothers in this troubled world. With expressions of love, patience, kindness and forgiveness, we could effect change for the betterment of humanity and our organization.
1 want to thank Br. 19 for inviting me to be a part of this memorable day. You planned a good day and did a super job.
I am pleased to read in the reports from various branches the involvement of junior members. It is heartwarming to see the happy faces of our youth in the photos that are published. I feel you are really putting an extra effort to include the junior members in your meetings and activities. Dorothy Hodnichak and the SWU Twirlettes are a fine example of the success that can be achieved when you have cooperation from parents and youth.
As the new school year starts, be on the lookout for “Young Achievers” and write up a report on them. Let’s counteract all the news about the bad youth with more news on the good youth. There are more good than bad!

CLEVELAND REPORT
The Combined Branches of Ohio-Michigan held a meeting on Sept. 26th on St. Clair. Fourteen members were present, including the officers of the board.
The sad news was announced, of the passing of Mary Bostian, past president of Branch 32, past State Pres, of Ohio-Michigan and past National Pres. She died on Sept. 21st. It was suggested that we start a $1,000 Mary Bostian Scholarship Fund, with all branches participating. More information about this later.
Among the group was a newly-elected president of Branch 14, Marty Koren. All wished her luck and success in her duties.
Next on the agenda was a discussion of the coming State Convention on Sunday, October 27th. The Mass was in memory of Albina Novak at St. Mary’s on Holmes Avenue and dinner following. A committee was selected to sell tickets and refreshments; all accepted.
Branch No. 41, Marge Church, No. 47, Mary Taucher, and No. 73, Kay Yuratovac were hostesses, and brought delicious pastry.
The next meeting is on Thursday, Dec. 5th at 12 o’clock at Sterle’s restaurant. Please try to be present. The meeting adjourned at 3:15.

BENEFIT DINNER DANCE
On Friday, November 22 a benefit dinner-dance will take place at St. Joseph Park Hall in Joliet, IL. All proceeds will go toward the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island restoration project. Our first meeting, after a summer vacation, was held Sept. 4. Frances Skull, our President, opened the meeting with prayers. There were 15 members present.
Our Secretary, Anne Spelich was not there so I, Pauline Pauchick, took the minutes. Anne had surgery and is convalescing at home. Wish you a speedy recovery, Anne.
Our Treasurer, Frances Simonich, gave her report and it was approved.
The Auditors’ Report was read and approved.
The membership present approved having the meetings on the first Wednesday of the month instead of Thursday.
Prayers were said for Sister Steffie Novak, who passed away recently.
We all give our condolcnces to her family.
We also give our condolences to Sister Anne Klune, who recently lost her husband.

The meeting was called to order on Sept. 17 - due to our pres. Jean Planisek being in the hospital for surgery and vice-pres. Frances Zager also in the hospital. Ann Stefančič, Rec. Sec., presided.
Prayers were said for our deceased and sick members. Reports were given and correspondence was read. The Sophie Magayna Scholarship Fund report was given by Caroline Stefančič. It is still in progress and any donations will be greatfully appreciated and accepted.
Our sunshine chairladies visited the following: Jennie Asseg, Jane Fonda, Frances Zager and Louise Kastelic. They were graciously received and our members happy that someone from branch 10 came to visit them. Many thanks to them for going out to visit with our sick members.

Frances Udovich is still doing very well at her home, but cards or calls are always welcome for all the members not able to attend because of some illness.
We were pleased that so many of our group attended the state convention.

It is with deep sorrow that I report the death of Mrs. Veronica Cacija on August 14, 1985 at the Cass County Medical Care Facility at Cassopolis, Michigan. She suffered a severe paralytic stroke last year and never really recovered from it. She was 97 years old on May 26th. Funeral services were conducted at the
husband, Jay, are enjoying their travels. This time it’s off to Canada then on to New England.
It’s great to hear that member Sylvia Banko, who had been on the sick list, is bouncing back to good health. Also Secretary, Donna Tome is recuperating after surgery and doing well. Hope all of our ill members enjoy a speedy recovery with a return to health and vigor.
Just a note for our members that elections will now be held in November instead of al our December Christmas party. In this way we can pay full attention to the elections and also enjoy our Christmas party without the business details.

Ann Lustig and I spenl a most interesting day wilh Mrs. Cacija and her husband when I interviewed her for the Immigrant article which appeared in the ZARJA and which is also included in the book, “Footsteps Through Time”. She was a charming person and in spite of the hardships which she endured in her lifetime she always had that beautiful smile which you see in this picture.
In a note to me, her daughter, Dorothy Boryc wrote, “Mother thought of the Slovenian Women’s Union so often; to her it was a bil of her birthplace that meant so much to her”.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her daughter, Dorothy Boryc and granddaughter, Pamela Paulk.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may the perpetual lighl shine upon her. May she rest in peace!

We weren’t used to the foreboding chill in the air the evening of our August meeting bul we were used to Helen Sebastiani’s gracious hospitality, and thanks to her and co-hostess, Mayme Drašler, we forgot the cold and enjoyed the evening.
A most welcome newsy letter was read from Emma Znidarsich of Hurley, Wise. Hailstorms had leveled the hay, tomatoes, and green peppers but “oh well,” quipped Emma, “won’t have to can.’’ The good news was that Frank was feeling better.
More news from the Norih: the Spreitzer family reunion was in Ely with 92 present including local SWU members Mary Rittmanic and Marge Planton. From the far corners of the
USA they came to honor, this year, their sister, Catherine, of Ely. She was presented the gift of a curio cabinet for her Hummel figurines.
Plans were made for (lie big trip to LaSalle Oct. 6, a Sunday we were looking forward to!

There is a song that links September with remembrance, if 1 recall. To our family it is appropriate, for it was in September, on the 18lh, the year 1944, thal Capt. Tony Stefanich, died in action. Our families were lifelong friends and Tony was a special chum of my brother, Joe. His name is immortalized in the book, A BRIDGE TOO FAR by Cornelius Ryan as “one of the most beloved officers in the 82nd - the heavyweight champion of the division,’’ and a two page account of Tony’s last dav
of combat appeared in the Kankakee Sunday Journal of September 18, 1983, the final paragraph reading “And in Groesbeck, grateful Dutch villagers have dedicated the bell tower of a tiny church to the memory of a heroic American from another small town. And passersby said a prayer as they walk near the spot where the young Bradley, Illinois soldier died to liberate their country.”
In (his pause of sober thought we realize life goes on in spite of its many storms. So we make our plans for events weeks ahead, be they as simple as attending the next SWU meeting.

BISHOP FREDERIC BARAGA— A SAINT IN THE MAKING
Over 700 enthusiastic pilgrims from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada, dedicated to the beatification cause of Bishop Frederic Baraga (the first bishop of Marquette, Michigan), gathered over Labor Day on beautiful Mackinac Island to learn more about his cause for canonization and to share in spiritual fellowship. Father Guy Thoren, pastor of the quaint white frame St. Anne De Michilimackinac church, greeted the crowd to the historic island where Bishop Baraga worked and lived for many years. This celebration marks the 13th year that the followers of Bishop Baraga have been gathering on a grand scale.
Bishop Baraga, a great missionary figure in the history of the American Catholic Church, was born in Slovenia, now part of Yugoslavia, on June 29, 1797. He gave up the wealth of his family in his homeland and came to the United States in 1830 to devote his life to the Indians of the Upper Great Lakes. He is known throughout history and in many books as ‘The Apostle of the Lakelands’ or more commonly as ‘The Snow Shoe Priest’ .
For 37 years Baraga moved about in a vast triangular territory of over 80,000 square miles including areas of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada and most of the time in less than ideal conditions. His only goal was to make God known and loved by all men. Totally devoted to his Indians, he learned to speak their languages with amazing fluency and went to them wherever they were. In addition, this quiet and noble man listened and spoke in Latin, German, French, Italian and English and in his mother tongue — Slovenian.
Baraga was never afraid of danger and often times was shooting perilous river rapids in a fragile canoe, entering dreary swamps, and trudging the frozen wilderness. This sensitive and cultured priest went from village to village seeking souls of this abandoned people.
Bishop Baraga died on January 19, 1868 after a life filled with exalted heroism and undiminished zeal for souls. Today the remains of the great missionary rest in the crypt of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Marquette, Michigan. Revered in his own day, his reputation for sanctity has increased enormously since his death. Baraga was truly a man 100 years ahead of his time!
The cause for beatification of Bishop Baraga has been going on since the early 1900’s, but only in the past twenty or more years has there been much in the way of coordinated efforts.

Thirty-eight members of our branch boarded a bus on Friday, August 30th, for an all night ride to Mackinac Island, Michigan to attend Baraga Days which was being hosted by St. Anne de Michilimackinac parish. A group of well-wishers saw us off as we left Joliet at 7:30 p.m. Our hostesses for the trip were Gen Klainsek, Jenny Lu Skul and Theresa Schmidberger. A lot of “behind the scenes” people helped gel everything organized and in the right place at the right time. We enjoyed sandwiches, cookies, “liquid refreshments”, peanuts, candy, Slovenian music, lots of talking, joking and just a lot of fun. Sadness overshadowed the trip because of the death of Josephine Erjavec a day prior to our deparure. She was a National Officer for years and was co-founder and recording secretary of Branch 20 until her retirement. We joined together to pray the rosary for her and for Agnes Lovati, our secretary, who was unable to make the trip because of illness.
While driving through the darkness, we made a couple of stops to stretch our legs—we helped Ann Kobe celebrate her 77th birthday (she was the life of the party! We stopped for breakfast about 5:30 a.m. and then headed for the ferry boat that would take us to the Island. It was a nice sunny morning to make the trip.
After arriving on the Island, we had to decide how to travel; by foot, horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. No one chose the bicycle so early in the morning, but we all got to the hotel.
As you may know there is no vehicular traffic on the Island therefore no pollution, no gas fumes, and you somehow get the feeling of being back on the farm! The Island is beautiful; our hotel was just a short distance from St. Anne Church where they have a beautiful outdoor » » » » » » »
grotto. It looked to fresh and green and the flowers were in full color. Learned the history of the Island by taking a tour in a horse-drawn carriage. Saw other parts of the Island from a tandem bike. We rode halfway around and back again. It was quite a job for someone never having ridden a bike before—I just followed my husband! I couldn’t see a thing other than his shoulders and lake.
On Saturday night we attended a Slovenian Mass on the Hotel grounds after which we gathered for a procession to the grotto at St. Anne’s for Benediction. On Sunday at 3 p.m., we attended Mass at the Hotel Conference Center. The banquet and annual meeting of the Baraga Association was held in the Sound Stage White Room of (he Mackinac Hotel.
The food was abundant, beautiful to see, and excellent to taste. The large group attending was fed in an orderly fashion and we were keeping quite close to the schedule. We heard many reports and presentations on the progress being made on the tedious procedures of canonization; much has been done, so much more to be done we pray it can be accomplished in the time allotted. Many, many people have dedicated their time and effort to this cause.
Monday morning came all too soon and it was time to pack up and be on our way. At 8 a.m. a Mass was offered at St. Anne’s, pre-empting the ceremonial beginning of the demolition of the front steps of the church. In the basement of the church they have a Museum dedicated to Bishop Baraga-many of his personal belongings are on display. They offered slide show presentations to acquaint visitors with the history of the church. The last walk from the hotel took us down to the dock for our ride back to the mainland. A last look at the Grand Hotel, all the fudge stores (surely, you bought some), a stop for a continental breakfast at one of the shops along the dock and it was time to board the ferry. We could see our bus and driver wailing to welcome us as we prepared to disembark after our trip across the lake.
Homeward bound—we hopped on the bus, look off our shoes and made ourselves comfortable. We si ill had some goodies left that “Dutch”, the bus driver	was	kind	enough to	ice
down for us, so	il	was	ready when	we
were! He	was	a good traveling
companion—he not only told stories, he could sing too! We were back where we siarted within a few hours, happy, but tired.

Among the highlights of the weekend festivities honoring the great deeds of Bishop Baraga was a mass in Slovenian at the Mackinac Hotel Theatre on Saturday night con-celebrated by Father Athanasius Lovrenčič, OFM, and Father Vendelin Špendov, OFM both of Chicago, followed by a rosary procession to the grotto next to St. Anne de Michilimackinac parish and a Slovenian litany at the grotto with Benediction in the church following. On Sunday, August 31st there was another procession of clergy and Indians escorted by the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of Michigan from St. Anne’s Church to the Mackinac Hotel Conference Center where nearly 1,000 people (including pilgrims and towns people) attended a mass con-celebrated by five bishops. Bishop Mark Schmidt of Marquette, Michigan (the tenth successor to Bishop Baraga) was the main celebrant.
A gala banquet followed the Sunday afternoon Mass at the Hotel. The keynote speaker was Reverend Charles J. Strelick, Executive Director of the Bishop Baraga Association. The audience upon hearing the vigorous progress being done for the Bishop Baraga cause donated money and made pledges to continue the work.
“Ordinary people have little understanding and knowledge of what is involved in the process of beatification in the Church. The requirements of Rome are very, very demanding and they don’t do things easily. Fulfilling the requirements of Rome takes many years. They are filled with problems and difficulties beyond imagination, including many tears along the way,” said Father Strelick.
“Some of the problems we have faced are historical ones because there are no living witnesses to Baraga’s work. Everything we are trying to prove has to be proven from documents many years old. Another big difficulty is the language problem. It is almost impossible to have all of the documents from all over the world translated and put into proper order and then sent to Rome to be translated back into Latin. Because of Baraga’s vast knowledge of languages, many documents about him and by him are in a variety of languages, thus multiplying the problems of translation. In this world today to get a Bishop canonized is almost impossible”.
To get down to actual steps involved in beatification, Father Strelick was pleased to announce that all the writings, including numerous volumes in many different languages have all been done and have been approved by Rome. A second part in the investigation involving any unauthorized cults has been done. The third step about the life of Bishop Baraga is about to be completed at this time and only the last ten years of his life remain to be done.
Archivist, Reverend Dan Rupp, Vice Postulator on the cause, has been working on the “Positio” and making revisions on works already completed.
Father Bruno, OFM, a man well versed in working on numerous candidates for beatification, has been studying the sanctity of Bishop Baraga and has written a document of 500 pages backed with historical documents to prove each sentence on the sanctity of Bishop Baraga.
In gathering all of the information regarding the “sanctity” of Baraga, it was up to Father Bruno to select evidence from “People in the know” such as cardinals, bishops, historians and biographers of which he has included 99 pieces of information. Also included will be 50 of the most important favors granted in Bishop Baraga’s name gathered from the many thousands of letters that arrive from so-called “average” people. Father Bruno will personally be taking all of this information to Rome to present it in October.
In reiterating the vast problems, Father Strelick stated that Rome ordinarily gives you 20 years to get all of this documentation completed.
“We have all of the fantastic works done, except for the biography part, and we have 7 years to complete that part, said Father Strelick.
In commenting on the extremely tedious and costly investigating work, Father Strelick stated candidly, “So many people say to me, ‘let’s give up this whole thing. There are many starving people in the world and why don’t we give the money we arc spending each year on this project to these poor starving, needy people?’ ”
Dedicated steadfastly to the cause, he staled, “It’s true, there are millions of people who are hungry in this world. Right now there is a great movement in the world to feed the starving people in Africa and that is good. The affluent people are finally coming lo their senses to feed the hungry! I personally don’t know if we will ever conquer this (hunger problem) but at least we are starting. Jesus himself said that the poor will always be among us.
“There is another kind of poverty and hunger in this world. Starvation and hunger of soul and spirit is very prevalent in this modern world. Young people don’t know if they are coming or going. They don’t know what they want to do and are completely taken up with the material world. They are » » » » » » » » » » » » »	»
involved with the “ME-ME-ME-ME” world and are completely lost. The growing number of teen suicides is a perfect example of spiritual starvation right here in our own country.
“I’ve worked with the Marriage Tribunal and over 50% of all marriages today end up in divorce court — WHY? No commitment, no dedication, no give, all take, no sharing and people just never grow up! Priests, too, need commitment — there is a hunger for spirituality in their lives also.
“In this world today we see spiritual hunger, material hunger and spiritual food. When people are questioned what they appreciate most about Jesus, the answer most often heard is of His dedication and that He gives and gives until there is nothing left to give. Bishop Baraga’s life followed that of Jesus. Life was not at all easy for him as he had many obstacles to face daily. What an example he was! Baraga is for all of us — for Slovenes because he was from Slovenia, for Americans because he was an American — he’s our own man. The starving spiritual world needs Bishop Baraga!
In his closing remarks, Father Strelick said, “One of these days very soon, you and I are going to take a lot of pride in feeding the spiritually starving people with the life of “Saint” Bishop Baraga.”
One of the many pilgrims and part of the participating clergy in the festivities of this historic weekend was Reverend A. R. Adamich, Pastor of Mother of God Church, Waukegan, Illinois, who noticed “the great inspirational spirit of so many people from many places as evidenced in the masses, processions and litany at the St. Anne’s church.
Having heard about the great Bishop Baraga since her early childhood from her parents, Mary Cepon, Waukegan, was most inspired by his love and devotion to his people. Baraga wanted to serve and not be served. He was a dedicated man, priest and bishop of many talents. The poor and homeless were always uppermost to him. He wanted to educate the people spiritually as well as physically and all for the glory of God in a very selfish and humble way.
Margaret B. Dwyer, also of Waukegan, a retired school teacher, came to the pilgrimage because of a long standing interest in the legends and books about his life and a great desire to visit the locations where Baraga worked.
Being a native of what is known as “Baraga Land” in the copper country of Michigan and a desire to make that area better known is what prompted Dwyer to make the pilgrimage.
Sister Mary Vivian Ivantic, OSB, Chicago, and her sister, Agnes Ivantic noted that their family has been supporting the Baraga cause for many years and they came to continue in the tradition started long ago by their ancestors.
Both noted that a most memorable part of the weekend was hearing the Slovenian Mass, hymns and litany once again.
Sister Vivian noted, “The progress being made was most gratifying and the fervor of the pilgrims in attendance was very stimulating. The canonization of Bishop Baraga is long overdue for a man who led such a saintly and heroic life. Baraga was a man of great spiritual depth, of tremendous intellectual ability who gave of himself to all with whom he came in contact, but most especially with his Indians.
Being of Slavic background prompted Barbara Kluka, an attorney from Kenosha, Wisconsin, to attend the weekend pilgrimage.
“I was proud that Bishop Baraga may be recognized for his commitment to the Church and to native Americans. This weekend has prompted me to do more reading on his life.”

Our September meeting took place in Ferdinand Hall immediately after a memorial mass for Josephine Erjavec. Several of our officers were unable to attend because of illness— we wish them a speedy recovery. Also recouperating from surgery is our member, Diane Govednik.
We wish to extend our sympathy to Marie Malnarick on the death of her sister, Agnes Troutman.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Art Kraus, Jr. on the celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.
Our November meeting will take place on the 17th at I p.m. at the Parish park Hall. We will have election of officers, an auction, and final plans for our dinner-dance to be held Nov. 22nd.
Members are asked to bring items to be auctioned.
After praying for our deceased members, the meeting was adjourned and our program for the evening began, it was an exercise demonstration given by Pam Hohlman from Movement Inc. She emphasized the need for exercise regardless of age or aches and pains. She made it look so easy!
Our dinner-dance for the benefit of the Restoration Fund for the Statue of Liberty will take place on November 22nd at St. Joseph’s Park Hall. Cocktails, 6-7 at the cash bar, dinner at 7, dancing 9-12, with music by Bob Doszak. No tickets will be sold at the door. For your reservation call Dolores Ambrozich— admission is $10.00 per person. Cochairpersons are Father David Stalzer and Agnes Lovati. Roasi turkey and pork will be served, with all the trimmings. Tickets will be available on the 3-$ 100.00 prizes. Come and enjoy friends food and a good cause.
Again, this year, we had a beautiful moonlit night, perfect weather, an impressively decorated hall, perfect music, good food, plenty of refreshments and above all, a hall full of people having a great time. This was the scene of our Grape Festival Dance held each year on the last Saturday of September. Ken Juricic played for us again; everyone was in great form keeping up with whatever he played; polkas, waltzes, rock and roll, the “bird dance” - the dance floor was always full. The magic hour came, the time for the Mayor, his wife and entourage to make their entrance and join the festivities. Father David Stalzer, Master of Ceremonies for the evening introduced the Mayor, Benny Papesh and his wife Theresa. The Mayor read the proclamation to

enjoy the evening but to beware of intruders who would try to steal the grape harvest! If caught, they would be punished by a fine or jailed. The excitement began when the “policemen” caught many would-be thieves and hauled them off to the “judge” who in turn proclaimed-the punishment. Within a short time the “harvest” was gone, but the coffers were jingling with “donations” from those who were caught. We enjoyed the wine and šarkelj and when his Mayoral duties were over, Benny entertained us with his accordian pantomime act, of which he is a master. Again, “Živijo, oj, Živijo” rang out as in years past, looking forward to next year. The proceeds from this dance are used to pay dues for our members 80 years of age and older; the fines are contributed to the scholarship fund.
A great big thank you to all who helped; before, during and the cleanup after; we appreciate it all.

Our garden party was a great success. How could we fail? We had St. Joseph on our side, who was holding supernatural powers back. What - supernatural - powers? -Namely, rain. We are thanking St. Joseph also Josie and Jennie who made this garden get-together so perfect.
Jennie Strumbel was surprised for her 75th birthday with a gourmet dinner. Her daughter Rosalie Franks from Vermillion, OH made the dinner. It was a family affair. Birthdays were also celebrated at Jo
Godic, Mary Gerbec, Irene Reiman’s house. November 1st is Lynne Chrzanowski’s Day. November 12th Cecelia Kermavner will observe her day. May the dear Lord bless each day of the year especially for all of you!
The ladies on the go were Anna Bozich who sent us a beautiful card from Chicago. Stefi Zamlen and her daughter Judy and Mary Turk visited Europe.

After a very pleasant summer everyone is ready to settle down for the fall and winter routine. News items of the summer are that on June 14th John Lekavec and Paullette Geller were married in a beautiful ceremoney at St. Christine’s in Euclid. The reception was held at American Society Home on Recher Avenue. Congratulations to the young couple. John is the son of Ann Lekavec, a very dear member and past recording secretary for many years.
Allison Kromar graduated from Willoughby South High School. She will enter the University of Toledo; she is the granddaughter of Josephine Kromar.
Rose Jenko and her husband spent a vacation in Mexico; they traveled by Amtrak and really enjoyed it.
Carmella Carotenuto returned from 2 weeks in Escondido, Calif. She attended a wedding of a niece; also was in San Diego visiting a excoworker from Euclid General Hospital. She went to Mexico with friends and family, but had lo leave because of the earthquake there.
Great grandmother for the first time is Vicky Holny; a girl named Kari Ann Kelly was born July 9, 1985. Vicky also has 12 grandchildren.
Speaking of grandchildren, our president, Dorothy Lamm has a new second granddaughter, Lesa Denise, born on Sept. 17th in Springfield, Ohio lo Denise and Dr. Robert Kneisky.
Along with happiness there must also be sorrow. Long time member Barbara Baron lost her 19 year old grandson in a freak motorcycle accident on the 7th of Aug. Deepest sympathy.
Helen Kovacevich and Agnes Krivec were in the hospital as was Mary Bostian several limes, but on Sept. 21, the good Lord saw fit to finally spare Mary of anymore pain and suffering. She was our past president, besides being National and State president. Everyone knew of her hard work and devotion lo the Slovenian Women’s Union and the tremendous job she did. Branch 32 is saddened by our loss as are her many friends. May she rest in peace.
Dorothy Lamm and officers and members of branch 32 wish to (hank the sis(er branches, TwirleUes, and Dawn Coral Club and all that al-tended the wake and funeral. Ann Tcrcek read a heart-warming eulogy. The honor guards of Br. 32 were Mary Drobnik and Fran Ogorenc.
Josephine Commenshek and her husband, Al, were in Europe for 2 weeks and came home the day before the funeral. Mary will be held in reverent memory by all who knew her and worked along with her in all the activities over the years.

It was a “great trip” for 38 on a bus to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The highlights included the Slovenian Folkarama, boat trip, and “New York - New York” Dinner Theatre.
At the Sept. meeting Emily Skull, President, finalized plans for bus to Minnesota Day at Eveleth on Sept. 8th.
Amelia Thomas was to be
“Queen” of the month in Sept. Marie Garafalo missed out on the $20.00 attendance prize.
Rene Doble has a new slotted spoon which can be purchased as well as good selection of knives for sale as gifts for any occasion.
A shopping trip is planned for Dec. 7.

Ruth Foley will be “Queen of the Month” for our October anniversary dinner-meeting Oct. 2 at Androy Hotel, Superior.

As 1 am writing this, we have just had an early taste of winter-reports of eight inches of snow tailing in Ely on yesterday, October 1! This is much too early for us!
Branch No. 34 met for our first meeting of the season on September
18,	with a good attendance. Reports were given of our April and May meetings—including our Mother of the Year Observance, our members enjoyed themselves, I’m sure.
We welcome into our branch a social member, Helen Dragavon, who lives in California, but wanted to become a member after attending some of our functions and hearing about us. Helen is from a Soudan family, her father and mother were both from Slovenia—Helen’s sister, Sr. Boniface Dragavon, now of Massachusetts, was one of our charter members, which we found out when we had our first minutes translated by Sophie Spollar when we observed our 50th anniversary in 1979.
Our branch presented the volumes, “From Slovenia to America,” “Footsteps Through Time,” and “Pots and Pans,” to the Arrowhead Library System, which maintains a bookmobile that travels across the Iron Range. These volumes were presented to me at our last national convention for our school libraries. Our members agreed that more people would be able to take advantage of reading these books through the bookmobile. We received a thank you from the System for them. We hope many people will enjoy them.
Founder’s Day will be observed by our branch on Saturday, November 2, with a Mass to be said by our new pastor, Fr. LaPatka. We hope our members made a special effort to attend.
Twelve of our members attended our Minnesota Day in September, Eveleth did a nice job in setting up and entertaining us—Rose Maras conducted a very good meeting—I only wish the ladies would give more courtesy to the officers when they are conducting the meeting by staying until the meeting is adjourned! We remembered Mary Hutar during the meeting—Mary had led us on many occasions in community singing—our branch sent her a get well card. Since then I have seen Mary at the Ely Hospital and she is still thinking and talking about singing and getting together!
We didn’t have much of a summer this year, two weekends we had sunshine—one was when St. Martin’s had their centennial, which turned out to be grand!
One of our members, Yvonne Rooney, was married to Mathew Yernatieh in June at a most lovely wedding. Yvonne’s mother, Marcy, is also a member. On Matt’s side, his mother, Margaret Yernatieh and Margaret’s mother, Agnes Tekautz, are also members of our branch. We
wish Matt and Yvonne many years of’ happiness!
Our members have been here and there on short trips but Angeline Grahek went to Slovenia again—her husband, Rudy and she had been there last year but couldn’t resist going back again—they love it there!
Hostesses for our( September meeting were Ann Stefanich and Frances Tanko, the door prize was brought by Angela Planton and won by Frances Tanko. Winners during our social hour were Sophie Spollar, Anne Frazee, Molly Wilson and Angela Tekautz.
Our next meeting was on October
16	with Victoria Bobence and Agnes Mesojedec as hostesses and the door prize brought by Eileen Poderzay.
We enjoyed being with other members of our branches during Minnesota Day-Fr. Lovrenčič was a hit—everyone seems to enjoy getting together, hearing what others are doing in their branches, and promoting the SWU-we hope our members continue to come to our meetings as they have been—and bring along a prospective member!

Hello sisters - my last month’s letter must not have reached Corinne in time, so today, I’ll add a few lines. Our Sept. 3rd meeting was held at the Slovenian Home and about 25 ladies attended. We were planning a Halloween Card Party asking all the members to get busy and promote this event.
About 20 ladies from our branch attended the Minn. Day at Eveleth. We want to congratulate the Eveleth gals for a job well done. Very good meal and the entertainment was tops! We also enjoyed Father Lovrenčič. It was a grand day.
Members of our branch should be thinking of getting some new members. Bring a prospective member to our next meeting.
We also should be thinking of our Christmas get together and election of officers. See you all at our next meeting.

Our July meeting was dispensed and a picnic held instead. Very successful and 22 members attended. Three were new members, Kathy Russ and her two daughters Annette and Tricia. Welcome!

We managed to eat our picnic supper - then the heavens opened up and we had to run for cover.

Glad to see Agnes Bucher back after being ill, and we missed Rose Janear who had foot surgery.

1 read in the paper that Joyce Ferlic-Arrendondo participated in a discussion on Joan Lowry’s “North East Connection”. She is the daughter of George and Mary Ferlie.
New grandparents are Andrew and Sophia Pogachar; son, Kenneth and wife, Barbara have added a baby boy, David, who’ll join Laurie, Mark and Michael in the family. Happiness to all.
Sad to report the death of Gertrude Betka. She passed away after suffering a heart attack. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John, son. Dale and daughter, Carole Williams, five grandchildren, also sisters and brothers. May she rest in peace.
I’ll close with this: Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

Sorry to report the death of Anne Delillo, age 64, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Joseph A.; son, Joseph and sister, Dorothy Kar-pinski, and brother Frank Mahnic, she will be sadly missed.
Then, death touched us again. Pauline Strong passed away at the age of 74. She is survived by daughter, Dolores Scrofano; sister, Eleanor Holp, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Her husband, Steve, passed away in 1978. May she rest in peace.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Our September meeting was held on Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, to complete all details for the 55th Anniversary and Wisconsin State Convention. In the month of November there will be a change due to Thanksgiving day, so the meeting will be held on Monday, November 18 at 1 p.m. In December, there will also be a change of meeting, due to Christmas.
We have several members who are ailing, namely Dorothy Pike, Helen Rudzinski and Mary Tratnik. Remember them with a phone call, card or prayer. To all shut-ins, a speedy recovery.
Some of our members are still enjoying vacations. Catherine Kurtius and her daughter are going on a lour to Niagara Falls. Another group is going to Germany, Rome and several other countries. Among these travelers are Mary Bushnik, Mary Martino, Sandy Schacht-schncider, Elsie and Eddie Gallun and Tillie and Marty Gregorcich. To the above tourists and all others, a safe and enjoyable trip.

Summer came almost to a close but not until we had our picnic with 103 members attending at Briardale. We had good food made by our members and Justine Zakrajšek and her team. Had good help and spirit. If you were lucky, your table number was called early and you would be first at the laden buffet, but really all had plenty. We also honored our member, Rose McHugh, who celebrated her 50th anniversary. We had a “This is your life” skit for her and she received a corsage and a cake made and donated by Ann Tomsick who makes all our cakes for members with 50th anniversaries. Many thanks, Ann, it is appreciated greatly.
Travelers: Josephine and John Smith still have the travel bug -Atlantic City - with its boardwalk and casinos - she did leave them a
few bucks. Then lo Philadelphia to touch the Liberty Bell. The crack is still there, she said.

L.illian and Stan Goryanee fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to the west coast by car (yours truly and husband did that two years ago). Yellowstone Nat’l Park, Tetons, Old Faithful and Redwoods of Calif, are only a few gorgeous sights in their 7500 mile trip. They also stopped in Aurora, MN, which is “home” to Stan and visited friends and relatives, and spent an enjoyable evening with Ann Hodnik, SWU Youth Director and our “Learn Slovenian” teacher. Lillian was happy to meet and know her in person and not only through the ZARJA. A good trip!!
Anne and Gus Ryavec’s trip to Europe with “Jadran” was a very memorable experience as they saw the Pope at close range and visited her parents’ birthplace in Croatia. Seeing Anne, her relatives noticed her remarkable resemblance to a deceased aunt who passed away many years ago and kept calling her “Mara”. Captivated by the natural beauty of Yugoslavia and also noticing the primitive way of life of the country people, they decided America was still the place in which to live. Travel will broaden your perspective of life and make you appreciate “Home Sweet Home.” Nice to go and nice to come back safely, but don’t put it off too long, for as you get older you can’t take it.

First grandson for Ann and John Muhic after 5 granddaughters. John Michael Ebert lives with parents in Birmingham, Ala. Another proud grandma is Millie Petrovič whose granddaughter, Deanne Matko, is a freshman at Ohio State College on a scholarship from Euclid General Hospital, earned on grades and volunteer work. She graduated from Mentor High and will major in physical therapy. We met our member, Deanne. She attended our
picnic with grandma. We do hope she does well.
Also a proud grandmother is Mary Pucel whose granddaughter, Denise Sieracki, was married to Craig Dillon at St. Mary’s Church in Orwell, OH. Both graduated from Grand Valley High School and are presently employed in that vicinity. Good luck, Deanna and Craig.
Grandparents Jennie and Stan Laurich were proud to attend their grandson Michael Jenner’s graduation from Nevada State College with a degree in hotel management. He had been employed at the Las Vegas hotels while working on his degree and now is employed at Ceasar’s Palace. Wishing the best of luck lo my grand nephew, Michael in his chosen profession.
tJosephine Prince - We are sorry to lose our member after a short illness. The usual ritual by our cadets for deceased members was enacted. Attendance and prayers at the funeral home, and the trip to the cemetery are part of the niceties our Union does at these sorrowful times. Josephine and her volunteer charitable works will be greatly missed at SHA. Our prayers are with her.
Saw many of our members attending the USS sponsored Lojze Slak concerts. Even a member, namely Ann Hočevar, was selected from the audience to dance on the stage with Andrej and she was so excited and thrilled she forgot her painful hip! Hope everyone saw at least one concert. These wonderful talented and entertaining singers and musicians were worth seeing and hearing. It might be another five years before they return to America again from Slovenia

A beautiful night and an unusual celebration. We had 105 members present at Rechar’s Slovene Society Home. Seven ladies with 50 years of marriage anniversaries were honored by Father Tome with a Mass and blessing for each. How true, one can worship God in many places and still feel His presence. Thank you, Father. This must be a first! Just imagine 350 years all tole! The ladies, Bea Tome, Frances Kikel, Marie Hearn, Rose McHugh, Mary O’Kicki, Ella Skoda and yours truly, Vera Šebenik. Five of us had a “This is your life” skit - Rose and Frances had theirs at previous meetings. All of the members enjoyed the ice cream, cake, nuts, candy and coffee provided by the celebrants. This was a different party and meeting and at
a new meeting room as our library was still under modernization. Our guests were Josephine Tome, Helen Bruss, Marian Walsh and Ann Brancel.
We sent sympathy cards to Mary Sterling who lost her mother-in-law, Rose Sterling; Jane Somraek who lost her brother-in-law, Anthony Somraek and Bernice Somraek’s daughter-in-law Katherine Somraek, age 28 passed away. Olga Ancel and Millie Pucel lost their mother, Josephine Erjavec. Sympathy also to Florence Mirtel, treasurer of No. 101 whose husband died in June due to a motorcycle accident. Prayers were said for all and for our Mary Bostian who died in Sept. She was a Branch 50 member, then president of No. 32; also our State and Nat’l President consecutively for six years each. Our cadets and members officiated and attended the funeral as per usual for all members.

Our ailing members; Ann Hočevar had knee surgery. Get well soon, Ann; your dancing partners are getting itchy feet! Angela Krall, age 97, in. a hospital and hoping to get into SHA. Also Amy Gad’s mother, Mrs. Hraster, who is 100 years old, is in intensive care. Mary Petrie’s father, Mr. Revere, who is over 100 years old, fell and fractured his hip. Mary De Lost, Julie Kuhar and Bernice Somraek are also on the sick list and hopefully feeling better or well by now. Katherine Dush is in the hospital as is Helen Hraster’s husband, Victor. Our best wishes and prayers for your recovery.

Angela Glavan Slivenik, our new transfer member, had a very pleasant visit from her two sons, Jim and wife and Gary who recently was promoted to Gen’I Manager of an exclusive restaurant, “Mick’s” at Lenox in Atlanta, GA. They celebrated with a dinner at the Panorama in Westlake and upon leaving gave Angela a new color TV which made her very happy.
According to Angela (she was captain of the cadets of branch 10 in 1942 and 1943), her mother, Mary Glavan was one of the organizers of branch 10 in 1927. Congratulations, Angela.
Eda Pusl Vovk’s folklore performance at AMLA was very good and well-attended. Eda is inviting children of all ages to join their inspiring dance and acting group.
On August 25, 1985 after 9:30 Mass an open house at the St. Joseph’s Hall was held in her honor in Gilbert.
Mildred ‘Vuk’ Kramarich was 100 years young on July 26. She was bom in Osojnik, (Bela Krajina) Slovenia. Mildred and Frank were married at St. Peter Church in Osojnik. They were 17 years of age. The priest said they were too young to get married but did so after much persuasion. Frank left soon afterwards for America and Mildred followed 10 years later.
Milka and Frank (deceased July 30, 1953) have 5 children. Mary Novak, John of Gilbert, Frank, Ann Berg, Toni Jodowin of Duluth and
13	grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 23 great great grandchildren.
This past 4th of July Mildred was honored at the holiday parade in Gilbert. She enjoyed the event even though she caught her hand in the car door and suffered a broken bone and minor cuts.
She lives with her daughter, Mary. She enjoys putting together puzzles. Praying the rosary is a big thing in her life now. As I was visiting with her she was praying the rosary aloud. Milka is very alert, but hard of hearing and has poor vision.
She was honored at an open house after 9:30 Mass on July 28, at St. Joseph Church. Over 300 relatives and friends attended to wish her well.
Mildred has been a member of the S.W.U. for 50 years.

Anna Evans Glatch was born on August 26, 1985 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents were Stephan and Elizabeth Evans, both deceased. She had one sister, Rose Lewis of Newark, NJ who is also deceased. Living relatives are Mrs. Geo (Mary) Martin, a niece and God child, presently residing at Tonawanda, N.Y., a nephew, Joseph Enthor, Pompano Beach, Florida and several cousins in the New York and New Jersey area.
Anna was married to Anton Glatch on April 6th, 1902, in Ely, MN by the Rev. Father Buh. They celebrated a Golden Anniversary and also their 60lh.
For a few years they resided in Electric, Montana, where 3 children were born. But, they lived most of their lives in Elcor and McKinley, MN. It was here that 4 children were born.
Anton was employed at Corsica Mining Co. for 44 years. He passed away on December 27th, 1962, at the age of 85. Members of the family living are Rose (Glatch) Zabraski of Duluth, Joseph of Milwaukee, Stephan of Biwabik and Frank of Calumet. Deceased are 2 daughters, Mary Ton and Elizabeth Martinson as is a son, Donald J. Glatch.
Mrs. Anna Glatch is a 56 year member of the Slovenian Woman’s Union; she joined August 9th, 1929. She is also a member of the KSKJ lodge for over 50 years and a life member of Gilbert Senior Citizens’ Club.
There are 2 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.

Dear sisters, the months are slipping by so fast. Here it is autumn with the leaves turning and flakes of snow falling. Although our summer was short, because of rain, 1 hope every one enjoyed the few nice days we had.
Our state convention was held at Evelelh this year and every one had a wonderful time. A bus was chartered and shared with the Keewatin ladies. It was a nice group and we all enjoyed one another’s company. Thanks to the Evelelh ladies for doing such a wonderful job and we will all be looking forward to seeing you again next year.
Our meeting was held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Kochevar residence again. We had a very nice turn out. Sister Katie Dolinich, who had heart surgery, was out to see us as was Ann Nadeau. It surely was nice to sec them again. We would like lo see a lot more at our next meeting as it will be time to discuss our Christmas party. We would like all to be present so we could have some new ideas. So, please try to be present.
Our meeting was then concluded with a prayer by our president, Rose Trombly. We then commenced with the social of the evening. Out hostess were sisters, Florence Techar, Shortly Spinel I i, Mary Techar and Frances Rapovich. A very delicious lunch was served. Cards were played with

Denise Anderson and David Cole were wed Aug. 31, 1985, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Enumclaw, Washington. Fr. William Hausman officiated the 7:30 evening ceremony.
Denise, a member of Branch 79, made a beautiful bride in her mother’s wedding dress of 27 years ago. The bride’s attendants wore floor length red dresses and the groom and his attendants wore black tuxedos.
A reception followed at the I.W.A. Hall in Enumclaw with a buffet and dancing for about 200 guests.

It has been a very sad time for our loved ones. We lost our dear sister, Frances Shega; she was an outstanding charter member, old in age but young at heart. She has left an empty spot in our hearts and she will be missed greatly. We would like to take this time to offer our deepest sympathy to the family: daughters, Frances and Mary and all grandchildren and great grandchildren, she has left behind.
To sister, Caroline Fink, our sympathy. She has laid to rest her dearly beloved husband, Stanley. We hope and pray that these thoughts will sustain her to know that we all feel the sorrow and grief that comes when losing a loved one. To all the sons, daughters, grandchildren and relatives, our deepest sympathy. May their souls and all souls of our faithful departed rest in peace.
To our sick member Katherine Dolinich, we wish Godspeed to a rapid recovery. She was in the Minneapolis hospital.

It has been a long and dreary summer, the weather was bad with continuous rain and temperatures cooler than usual. Our meeting for Sept. was again held at the Kochevar residence; there was a nice turn out.

Get well to Helen Gorsick who was hospitalized recently.
Our sympathy to Ronald Golden, son of our beloved Jennie, who passed away in September. She was very ill and suffered greatly. She was our charter member and always donated, making lovely crafts for us. We attended her funeral and prayed together at her bier.
She leaves three sisters, one of whom is our loyal member, Vic Zuga and knows she will be sadly missed by her loved ones and friends. May you rest in peace, dear Jennie.
Traveling to Dover, Delaware recently to visit their great grandchildren were Anne and Martin Savor. They love to travel and luckily are in good health to be able to do so.

I would like to share this story with you and perhaps your readers would be interested. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to California 11 years ago. For the last four years I have been living in Sebastopol, a small town one hour north of San Francisco. A few years ago my aunt, Sophie Rozman, sent me a copy of Pots and Pans and 1 noticed a recipe by Mary Dicke of Sebastopol! I was so surprised to see the name of another Slovenian/American in this small town. I got her phone number from the directory and we had a nice chat, but we didn’t get together until almost a year later when her parents, Hermine and Robert Dicke were visiting from Madison.

It is my hope that the people in your organization can supply me with this small bit of personal information so that your cultural contribution is not left out.
There arc two specific pieces of information for which I would like help from your group:
1) A list of pet names of grandmothers and grandfathers that are of ethnic derivation along with pronunciation aids.
2) Any stories (personal or traditional) that relate to how any pel names for grandparents came about, (i.e., often thru the pronunciation of a grandchild).
1 have written your oganization specifically for the above information - however, let me press my luck and add just one more question. I wish to thank you for forwarding my request for a duplicate policy which I needed because I have moved and misplaced my old one; also I must change the beneficiary since I am a widow 5-1/2 years already.
I’m not a new member. I entered when Mrs. Frances Rupert was asking for new members to join way back in 1926. Ženska Zveza was just organized then and at Br. 14, the dues was 25C. Now I am a member for more than 50 years.
I just adore reading ZARJA. Such nice reading. I hardly wait for the following issues. I see and read the nice poetry from various members, stories, etc., just written so beautifully. I also see where a
convention will be held in Collin-wood (Oct.), the area 1 know well. So, I do hope they reach many good things (on the agenda) from the delegates gathered together, for the advantage and encouragement of all the members. I pray to goodness all will be a healthy success for the entire Zveza.
I’m living in the Ft. Lauderdale area for some 30 years. I enjoy reading the various stories such as “Mlada Breda” and “Visoška Kronika.” They are tops. Just wishing for more such splendid reading.
I will have a birthday Nov. 2nd -I’ll be 81 years old then. Gee, where do the years go! I’d like to wish you and all the members a very happy and successful year.

I THE IMMIGRANT
SLOVENIAN MISSIONARIES
The next four articles will be devoted to Slovenian immigrants, namely, the missionaries, who dedicated their lives to spreading the word of God to the Indians and the European immigrants that emmigrated to the northern provinces of America during the mid to late nineteenth century.
We are fortunate to have received permission to print in this series, the thesis work of Rev. George Kuzma, when he was a seminarian at St. Mary Of The Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. Rev. Kuzma is now Pastor Emeritus at St. Rose Church in Wilmington, Illinois. He is also known in the Joliet community as having served as assistant pastor at St. Joseph’s Church for many years.
PARTI Slovenian Missionaries Rendered Distinguished Service to the Catholic Church in America.
Because the native land of the Slovenian people is poor, and can scarcely supply enough bread for all her children, many have sought their fortune and pitchcd their tents elsewhere. More than a hundred thousand established themselves in the United States of America. Among these were about two hundred Catholic priests secular and religious; of whom five became Bishops, two were elected Abbots, a number were created Monsignori and some especially distinguished themselves as Indian missionaries of the Great North-West. We shall concern ourselves only with the last named.
Hence the purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the life and labors of the four Slovenians who by their heroic life and extraordinary sacrifice as Indian missionaries helped so much to spread the Kingdom on this earth and thus rendered distinguished service to the Catholic Church in America. They were: Rt. Rev. Bishop Baraga, Rt. Rev. Bishop Mrak, Rev. Pierz and Rev. Lautizar.
Rt. Rev. Frederic Baraga was born June 29, 1797 in the castle of Malavas, parish Dobernice in the Austrian Dukedom of Carniola, now a part of Jugoslavia. His mother’s name was Catharina Jensic, and his father’s name was John Baraga. Both of his parents were Slovenian hence he was not a German, as some would have it, nor a Slavonian as his biographer Verwyst confusedly calls him.
He received his classical education at the Royal Gymnasium in Ljubljana. In 1816 he entered the University of Vienna and graduated from its Law Department in 1821. He entered the seminary of Ljubljana in the fall of the same year, and was ordained a priest in 1823. He remained another year in the seminary, then he was sent as an assistant to St. Martin near Kranj and later to Metlika.
In the ministry he exhibited an extraordinary degree of zeal so that he soon conceived the idea of devoting himself to the conversion of the North American Indians.

Thus when the “Leopoldine Society” for the support of the North American missions was established in Vienna in 1829, Baraga was the first candidate to offer his service for the Indian missions. Two months later, he wrote to Bishop Fenwick of Cincinnati and was received by the same into the Cincinnati diocese to work among the Indians.
After the necessary preparations Father Baraga left his native country and arrived in New York December 31, 1830. He remained with his Bishop in Cincinnati until April, and during that time he polished his English which he learned in Vienna, and studied Indians under William Makate Benessi. In April Bishop Fenwick took Baraga along on his mission trip and assigned him 10 work among the Indians at Arbre Croche now Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Here is Father Baraga’s own description of his arrival to his first mission: “From Detroit we journeyed to Michillimackinac, from where, after a short stay, 1 departed for my mission and arrived on the iwenty-eighth of May at Arbre Chroche, and shortly thereafter my Bishop came. Happy day which led me among these savages with whom I shall spend all my life if such be the most holy Will of God.” Father Baraga was the second resident missionary at Arbre Croche; the first one was Rev. Peter J. Dejean, who came there in 1829 and left before the arrival of Father Baraga.
At Arbre Croche Father Baraga met with great success. In two and a half years he baptized almost all the pagans in the neighboring villages. Within this short period he baptized five hundred and fifty-seven Indians. Hence his joy, which he expressed when he wrote: “Thanks be to God forever for this, I feel inspeakably happy that the most holy Providence has placed me in the happy situation of an Indian missionary and I thank him for it from the bottom of my heart.”
In September of 1833 Father Baraga was sent by his Bishop to Grand River to establish a permanent mission there, when he had already on a previous visit baptized eighty-six pagans. Here Father Baraga met with great difficulties. The greedy whiskey traders did not desire the presence of a missionary there, and hence they incited the pagan Indians against Father Baraga so that his very life was often threatened. Nevertheless he persevered, built a church and a school and converted during the first ten weeks one hundred pagans and placed thirty-eight children in his school. Here is Father Baraga’s description of his life at Grand River: “We often hear of murder perpetrated in drunkeness. My life is here in danger. Every evening I must carefully and securely bar my doors to guard against a visit of these monsters... Were it not for the ardent desire and the fond hope I cherish that some unhappy souls now groping in the ways of paganism, which lead to perdition, shall be saved, nothing in this world could induce me to stay here, where heathenism with all its vices, is so deeply rooted and where before me no missionary has ever endeavored to root it up.”
In 1835 Father Baraga was assigned by his Bishop the task of founding a new mission at La Pointe, Wisconsin. Here Father Baraga met with immediate success. Seven days after his arrival he said Mass in the new church; and during the first month lie baptized eighty-six Indians. He also visited Fond du Lac, Minnesota where he made numerous conversions. It was also during his stay at La Pointe that Father Baraga began the practice which he kept until his death, of rising at three o’clock in the morning summer and at four during winter and spending three hours in meditation and prayer. No wonder, then, that God blessed his work so generously.

Mary Musich of Branch No. 43 shares her husband’s favorite dressing, PORK SAUSAGE DRESSING, while Shirley Schulta, also of No. 43, gave me her mother’s CRANBERRY AND PECAN SALAD recipe which the family always enjoys on Thanksgiving along with apple and pumpkin pies for dessert. Joan Yaklitch of No. 17 will serve BROCCOLI CASSEROLE as a vegetable. More recipes will appear later.
It’s Fruit Cake time! Bake them now for the Holidays to allow 3 to 5 weeks for mellowina.

PORK SAUSAGE DRESSING

pounds bulk	Parsley, snipped
pork sausage	1	tablespoon	powdered sage
1 cup diced celery	1	large loaf of bread
•/2 cup diced onion	3	eggs
In skillet saute pork sausage with celery, onion, parsley and sage. (Use bulk sausage, crumble and brown, with the ingredients above.) Lightly dampen the loaf of bread under running water from the faucet. Squeeze dry. In bowl, mix well the pork sausage mixture, bread and eggs. Add diced gizzards, if desired. Stuff turkey. No seasoning is needed as pork sausage adds flavor.

Dissolve gelatine as directed on package. Chill until it begins to thicken. Crush cranberry sauce with a fork. Add cranberry sauce, grated orange peel, juice of 1 orange, grated lemon peel and juice of 1 lemon and pecans. Pour in shallow pan and continue to chill until firm. Cut in squares. Serve on lettuce leaf with mayonnaise.

Brandy or wine or orange juice
Grease 2 bread pans (9x5x3) or 4 or 5 one pound pans; line with waxed paper; grease paper. Allow paper to extend 1 /2 inch above pans, on all sides. Sift 2 cups of the sifted flour with the spices; set aside. Mix nuts and fruits with remaining flour; set aside. Cream butter; add sugar gradually and beat in egg yolks until fluffy. Add flour mixture alternately with the vanilla, brandy or wine or orange juice. Fold in beaten egg whites. Gently stir in the floured nuts and fruits. Fill almost to top of pans. Baking time depends on size of pans. Bake at 275° about 2 to 3 hours until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cover cakes with aluminum foil (loosely) during last hour of baking to avoid overbrowning. Cool in pans about 30 minutes; carefully remove waxed paper and allow to cool thoroughly for several hours. Pour about 1 to 2 ounces brandy or wine or orange juice in a small bowl, for each cake. Swish linen cloth in liquid. Wrap the soaked cloth around the cakc. Tightly wrap in aluminum foil or plastic securing ends with Scotch tape. To mellow, store in air-tight container 3 to 4 weeks in a cool place, preferably in refrigerator.
If desired: Prepare glaze by blending 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar with 2 tablespoons orange or lemon juice. Spread on cakes. To further decorate: Place nuts or halved candied cherries, cut side down, on glaze. Allow to set before cutting cake.

As I write this I’m very sorry to announce the passing of a member, Frances Hribar, 71, of 209 Glendale Ave. She died after surgery, Aug. 16 in St. Elizabeth Hospital. Frances was born April 24,	1914 in
Conemaugh, PA, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Salada Steber, coming to Girard in 1948. She was a member of St. Rose Church and SNPJ Lodge 643. Slovenian Mixed Chorus, Slovene Pensioners, FOE Auxiliary, St. Rose and Girard senior citizens groups.
Besides her husband, Stanley, whom she married Aug. 30, 1937 she leaves a son, Stanley of Niles; a daughter, Barbara Popovich of Boardman; two sisters, Mary Macek of Girard and Christine Hall of East Palestine and five grandchildren.

I’m happy to announce that Baby Monica Selak came home Sept. 17 after a month long stay at St. Elizabeth’s hospital. She had spinal meningitis but now is doing very well. Her parents, August and Maria, would like to thank everyone for their prayers and many gifts, and cards. Monica was a year old in October.
1 hear that Dori and Anka Kregar went to Hawaii in June and had a lovely vacation. Then in July, Anka went to Europe and visited nine countries; England, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, East and West Germany, Austia, France, Italy and Monaco. What a wonderful vacation that must have been!
Well, we finally got to go away for a few days in August! My husband Tom, our son, Louis Gordon, his wife Kathy and our granddaughter, Jessica all look off for Sandusky,
Ohio to see Cedar Point and the Blue Hole. We had a very nice time.
Ladies having birthdays in November are Olga Rogel, our president Mary Selak, Jennie Selak, and Katherine Sefcik. Happy birthday to all.

Our Sept. meeting was opened with a prayer by president Rose Maras. Reports were read and accepted. Margaret McDonald was reported sick; to her and all others a speedy recovery. Sept. birthdays were recognized and happy birthday was sung. Our charter member, Ursula Zaic was 104 years old on Sept. 25th.
Our deeepest sympathy to her and her family on the loss of their son and brother, Robert.
Hibbing branch No. 56 will be the host city for the 1986 Minnesota Day. We will be making plans soon.

Our attendance was small for Oct. meeting. The weather hasn’t been cooperative, we sure have had the rain, even snow and cold! Here’s hoping we get our Indian Summer!

Our September meeting was also our last picnic of the season and was held at the home of Mary Lukz. The weather was nice and we had a nice turn out, and, with each member bringing her favorite dish we had plenty of delicious food. Mary Opalks returned from Texas with pictures of her great, great grand daughter, now one year old. Mary Young is spending some time in Minnesota. Nettie Hoffman came from West Virginia to spend some time with me and Mary Stran before we three headed for Reno, Nevada for a few days.
There is a bit of a nip in the air (hat seems to tell us that summer is about to be a memory and fall is here with its final burst of beautiful colors. Then, it’s all soon over and we have to settle in for a long winter. But each season has its own beauty for us to enjoy.

Dear folks: Hi! Summer is past. It happens every year and it never goes unnoticed. As autumn casts its magical spell leaves turn from green to shades of yellow, orange and red. A card was sent to Olga Buritz as she was recently hospitalized. We send you a basket of cherry get-well wishes.
Charlotte Wos recently had an exciting 2 week visil to Europe. She also went to Denver, Colorado to join her mom and brother. They flew to Texas where they joined a “Flower and Garden Tour.” The trip featured sight-seeing ol some ol the principal cities ol Western Europe, many historical landmarks and famous tourist attractions.
Fran Montequin spent a week in Missouri visiting her niece anil family. She traveled by car with her brother and his wife. 16 year old Kimberlee Orenchuk completed a week of modeling camp. The camp consisted of hair, nail, facial, social grace and exercise classes. She is enrolled as a member of the Premier Modeling, Inc. of Washington, PA. She will be modeling for Mattel Toy Co.
A get-well thought is being sent out to our members who are sick and not feeling up to par.
Gobble, Gobble, Thanksgiving is nearing. Have a Blessed one.

No meetings! Ladies, don’t you want to help keep our lodge together? Please try to attend the meetings on the first Sunday of the month. Just three of us can’t keep it going.
Summer is gone and winter is near. The years are going by fast, and we have lots of ladies that could be active yet. Come to the meeting and tell us what you did this summer or what you made. We are interested.
As 1 glance from my kitchen window, I see Mary Slavich working in her garden; and here I am, some days complaining that this hurts me and that hurts me! When I reach her age I hope I can do the work she does. May God Bless her.
Another one is Kathie Herbolieh. She still works at the club and puts a lot of us to shame with the work she does, never complaining. So, ladies, there is still hope for us!
Mary Zorinich is doing fine at home. Ann Mrulick, Helen Peloza, Louise Sarjick, Sari Vlah arc getting along fine. God Bless them with good health. Won’t get to see them all so with Christmas so near, we would like to have a Christmas party get together. Come one come all. Bring a guest.

Trees changing colors, kids back in school, Trick-or-Treat time—Fall has really arrived. And, if you are like me, you are wondering where summer went!!
Our summer started off with a flurry of activity. We have gained a new daughter-in-law. Our youngest son, Mark, was married to Charlotte Hartman on June 15th at St. Monica’s Church. Even the rain that lasted all day did not detract from the beautiful wedding. Best wishes to the newlyweds.
Condolences are extended to a member of our Sister-Lodge, Branch 101 in Bedford Heights. Florence Mirtel lost her husband in a tragic traffic accident. All of us from Branch 73 extend our deepest sympathy. Our prayers are with you and your family, just as they are with our member Lottie Timko, whose husband, Ernest, passed away.
A special THANK YOU to members of our lodge who so generously participated in the benefit dinner-dance for Gcri and Daryl Timm who were completedly wiped out in the tornado that struck Licking County. They were deeply touched by your efforts on their behalf. You generosity makes “starting all over” just a little easier for them.
On February 1, 1909, Alozija Medved was married to John Turk at St. Vitus Church; they were married by Father Ponikvar. Their daughter (Louise Epiey) had kept her mother’s wedding dress, and recently sent it to the Heritage Museum in Chicago. Louise recently received a photo of the gown as it is displayed on a mannequin. What a treasure!
Louise, busy girl that she is, went on a Carribean Cruise — after she recovered from her broken ankle. Said she enjoyed every minute of it (I think she means the cruise, not the broken ankle). She is presently entertaining her cousin, Peter Matek, who is staying with her on his visit from Slovenia. Peter, we hope you are enjoying your stay in America.

Planisek Clan which was held in July. Josephine was the oldest (73 years) of the Zagars in attendance. They were able to gather 185 family members. Beautiful!
We held our annual cookout on August 26th with many members and guests present. The rain may have dampened the day, but it did not hamper our fun. The food was delicious, the music (Thank you “Mox” Micklaus) was delightful. The group was presented with our original charter, framed in gold in preparation for our fiftieth anniversary to be celebrated in 1986. Thanks to the Turk family, it had been kept for these many years. In conjunction with the anniversary celebration, we have two handmade afghans as prizes. We would like all of you to participate in the projects and in the forthcoming Golden Jubilee year. If you want tickets, please contact Kay Yuratovac, 662-5493.

News from the Great Northwest. Br. No. 79 cohosted our annual dance including polka tunes as well as other dance music, which was fun as well as a success. However, we do have sad news to report in that we lost one of our most loyal members. Mary Kitna succumbed recently after valiant struggle against her illness. Mary has been a member of SWU since the ealy 1940s - always ready to help and offer her expertise in the kitchen and wherever she was needed. She leaves a legacy to two daughters, one daughter-in-law, two granddaughters and a great granddaughter as members of our lodge. Always active, she loved to hunt, made excellent sausage, enjoyed the ball games and most of all was very much a family person, and was the center of her large family. Our prayers go out for her. Be on the lookout for news of our next meeting which will plan the holiday activities.

Our first meeting this Fall was held at the home of Rita Bartelli with Bunnie cohosting. It was on the 17th of September. Meeting opened with a prayer. Roll call showed 14 members present and one guest, Ann Bruno, niece of Margaret Malenšek. Minutes and Treasurer’s reports were approved as read. Correspondence included letter from Marilyn Marshall and thank you note from Frieda, our president Iasi year. She is now living in Utah to be close to her family and grandson -Can’t blame her for that. We missed her last night as we know we will at our future meetings. Wc do wish her the best in Utah. She has our best wishes. And hope to have her come and visit. Good luck, Frieda.
In October, we had a Bake Sale. Mystery box donated by Margaret Depew was won by Rita.
High winners were Margaret Depew, Frances Somrok; Low: Linda and Betty. Our October meeting was at Frances Somiok's home with Fern White co-hosting. Meeting closed with prayer. We enjoyed all the goodies our hostesses served. So many different kinds ol cookies!

“SLOVENIANS FOR THE LADY”
At Ihe feet of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor lies a broken chain, a symbol of Ihe broken shackles of oppression. Inscribed on a bronze plaque in its pedestal are the well-known words of Emma Lazarus:

We Slovenians will have the unique opportunity to helD keep this treasured symbol of freedom and the torch of our Lady ever shining brightly to all who gaze their eyes upon her.
In October we began the kick-off of the ‘Slovenians for the Lady” campaign. We, together with many other ethnic groups, will take an active part in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We arc hoping to unite all Slovenian fraternal organizations, clubs, churches and other groups to form a coalitiion of “Slovenians for the Lady”. Our monetary goal will be $100,000, which if we do not achieve is not legally binding in any way upon any one group.
Why should we get involved? Because we are Americans, proud and grateful for our country. Because we are Slovenians, proud and respectful of our heritage.
Because we are fraternalists, responding to our nation’s call to help one who is in need, Our Lady, The Statue of Liberty.
Can we do it? Without a doubt, Yes! Our seven Slovene fraternals have a combined membership of over 135,000. This would be less than $1.00 per member.
What recognition will we receive? If we reach our goal, our Slovenian name will be permanently recognized on Liberty and Ellis Islands. All donors will have (heir names added to the National Registry of Contributors. All will receive personalized certificates of appreciation and inclusion of our Slovenian name in the Foundation media and publications. Most important, that we have been part of restoring one of the world’s greatest symbols of freedom and opportunity — The Statue of LIBERTY!

Krmpotich and Lucy Kopilash visited the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C., the Croatian Shrines erected by the Croatians of America and Canada, sponsored by the Croatian Catholic Union. The statue of Our Lady of Peace is the art work of Croatian Sculptor, Joseph Turkaly. Marge and Lucy said that it was all fun, breathtaking and a wonderful experience.
Lottie Brkljacich enjoyed the fun and games at Lake Tahoe. Charlotte Fryza had the time of her life at Las Vegas and Houston, Texas. Fran Benkovich attended Ihe V.F.W. convention in Dallas, Texas, which was most exciting, and carefree.
Mary Ann Toporis attended the Tamburitza Extravaganza in Dearborn, Michigan. What a great way to unwind by listening and dancing to Tamburitza music.
Typical of a mother, Amelia Cuzella accompanied by her daughter, Kathy Hanson and granddaughters, Kristina Marie and Ann Marie, visited her son, Jerry Cuzella and saw that he and his family are comfortable in Colorado. They claim that it is one of the best places to go to breathe deeply of the fresh air.
Sylvia Vukodinovich and hubby in Williamsburg were accompanied by her sister, Helen Alb and hubby. Dolores Hennclly and hubby enjoyed wonderful cool evenings and indulged themselves with good food in Canada and she says Canada is all it’s promised to be with finest fishing lakes. Tension and fatigue disappear when you’re there.
We received a note from Fidelia Svalina who is enjoying her retirement in Richland Center, Wisconsin. She informs us that she and hubby, Nick, have not slowed down; Nick planted his first field of sweet corn, and the yield was great, and also she herself planted herbs and flowers everywhere. This is quite a change for them, Nick having been a State Representative for many years, and Fidelia always being al his side and very supportive. May you both enjoy your retirement in health and contentment and may the future years be happy and fruitful ones!

CELEBRATING AN OLD SLOVENIAN TRADITION “VINSKA TRGATEV”
It means GRAPE HARVEST and the time for it is in the fall of the year when the vineyards are emptied of the delicious grapes that in a few short weeks become wine! Slovenians are experts in growing grapes, making wine, and drinking it, too!
Br. 20, Joliet, Illinois members re-enact the Slovenian tradition each year at a special dance and these photos, sent to us by Olga Ancel and Marie Malnerick were taken at the party in September.

S svojimi deli si kujemo bodočnost
Jesen je čas, ko poljedelec spravlja pridelke s svojih njiv; čas, ko dobi plačilo za delo, ki ga je opravljal skozi leto. A velikokrat nenadoma nevihta pokonče vse sadove, na katere je kmet računal, da jih bo spravil v svoje žitnice. Isto se dogaja tudi z današnjim človeštvom. Človeku je vzelo več tisoč let, da je prišel do napredka, ki ga uživa današnja družba. Vzelo je veliko dela za napredek v tehniki, medicini in drugod; a prav sedaj, ko je človek prišel tako daleč, da je celo stopil na površino lune, se zdi, da stoji pred prepadom; da lahko poruši vse, kar je gradil skozi stoletja. In pri tem bo rabil orožje svoje lastne roke. Zdi se, da je ta nevarnost resnična, kajti ne samo verski ampak celo voditelji narodov nas svare pred katastrofo.
Za nas, ki verujemo v Boga in izpovedujemo, da je vse ustvarjeno po božji roki, vemo, da se brez božjega privoljenja nič ne zgodi. Zato se
sprašujemo, zakaj bi naj Bog pripustil, da bi bilo delo njegovih rok pokončano. Edni odgovor je: odpad človeštva od Boga; kajti, če človeštvo ne priznava božje oblasti nad sabo, potem Stvarnik prepusti ljudi svoji lastni usodi. A istočasno nam Vsemogočni govori: “Kakor resnično živim, nočem smrti grešnika, ampak, da se spokori in živi”! In če to drži za posameznika, tako tudi za narode. Bog noče, da bi se med seboj potokli in uničili, ampak cvetli v svobodi in blagostanju. Postali smo dobesedno slepi, da ne uvidimo, kakšno blagostanje bi vladalo med narodi, če bi se človeštvo obrnilo nazaj k Bogu. Torej je na posameznih narodih, kakšna bo njih usoda. Tudi mi spadamo v določeno skupino ljudi, tudi mi smo del naše države. Torej veliko odvisi od našega življenja, kakšna bo naša usoda. Ne, mi nismo predani slepemu naklučju, ampak božji previdnosti; in ta resnica nas navdaja z upanjem, ne pa z obupom!
Nič ni brez plačila
Jesen nas spominja na starost im smrt; v naravi življenje počasi izumira, listje pada z dreves, razne živali se pripravljajo na zimsko spanje; in ko pride zima s snegom in mrazom, se zdi, da je vse mrtvo. A to se le nam zdi; v spomladi solčni žarki privabijo v naravo novo življenje tako pri rastlinah kot pri živalih. Narava nikoli ne umre. In po božjem razodetju vemo, da človek, ki je prišel na ta svet kot otrok, ne bo nikoli izginil s tega vesoljstva. Da, začasno bo zginil, vsaj njegovo telo, ko bo umrl. A to telo bo vstalo ob koncu sveta. In če bomo mi večno živeli, potem vse, kar mi naredimo, bo šlo z nami. Sveto pismo, ko govori o mrtvih, nam pravi: “Njih dela gredo z njimi.” Ta misel, da vse kar naredimo, ostane za večino, nas navdaja s Čutom odgovornosti; torej misel, da “to ali ono je brez-
pomembno”, ne bo držala. Vsako naše dejanje dobro ali slabo, bo prinašalo dobre ali slabe sadove. Kolikokrat mislimo, da je naše delo nekoristno; če smo združeni z Bogom po milosti, potem še tako navadna dejanja prinašajo dober sad.
Skozi ta mesec november se še posebno spominjamo ljudi, čigar sadove mi uživamo. Kot je jesen le poroštvo, da se bo spomladi narava prebudila k novemu življenju in zacvetela v novi lepoti, prav tako nam je starost in smrt v znamenje, da se bo človek prebudil k novemu življenju v večnosti, in da njegova dela niso nikoli pozabljena. Ko daš denar na banko, upaš, da boš čez nekaj let prejel bogate obresti. Koliko večje bodo “obresti” ljudi, ki nakladajo na “božjo banko” z dobrimi deli, ko bo Bog, ki se ne da prekositi v darežljivosti, njihov plačnik!

Pri nas so Zlata vrata polna sonca in milega podnebja. Letos je manj megle kot je bila druga leta. Naša društva vodijo večina otroci naših staršev. Vsa čast za njih požrtvovalno delo za naš narod. Le pri nas na zapadu nimamo slovenskih tečajev al^ šol. Zato mi pravijo nekateri: zakaj pišeš slovensko, ko nihče ne razume? Vse mogoče. So pa drugi Slovenci, ki so prišli v United States po drugi svetovni vojni s povprečno izobrazbo v
slovenščini in v slovnici. Nekateri imajo univerzitetno izobrazbo, nekateri so doktorji, učiteljice i t. d. V Evropi velja: “Ni važno, koliko imaš, zelo važno je, koliko znaš.” Po mestih nekateri govore več jezikov, zdaj je uvedena angleščina in ruščina; pred 50 leti je bila pa francoščina in nemščina. Slovenci imamo najlepšo govornico med mnogimi jeziki.
Sveta Ciril in Metod, apostola Slovanov in filozofa, sta sestavila abecedo našega jezika. Sam Bog jima je razodel, kako sestaviti ta najlepši jezik. Vsevečni tudi ne
bo dopustil, da bi čisto ponehala naša govorica.

seje od	Zveze.	Začele se
bodo v septembru. Pridite vse in imejte se dobro. Beverly Jackson je žalostna, ker je izgubila še tako mladega moža. Čas, ki celi rane, naj ji olajša bolečino. Ko sem izgubila starše brate in sestre, sem jih prebolela; za moža ne bom prebolela nikdar.

Odšla si, to vsi čutimo — nihče izmed nas ne bo pozabil tistega 27. avgusta, ko smo zvedeli, da te ni več, toda za tabo je ostala sled, ostala je pot po kateri si hodila. Skratka r nas ostajaš kot komet, ki je nenadoma zažarel in ugasnil, njegova svetloba pa ostaja.

Vse prehitro je odšla pomlad in že se poslavljamo od poletja ter smo na pragu jeseni. Upam, da ste vse članice S.Ž.Z. imele lepe počitnice ter ste sedaj že navdušene pri delu, katerega se boste lotile ter skušale vse, kar je v vaši moči pomagati, da bodo naše seje ter prireditve imele uspeh. Naša ljubljena predsednica je že kar dobro okrevala od svoje bolezni. Le hrabro naprej Marion, in kmalu bo prišlo popolno zdravje.
Nova tajnica št. 17 je izurjena in dobro vodi tajništvo naprej. Prosim, v imenu vseh članic, da ji boste šle na roko in bo šlo vse gladko naprej. Taka bi bila želja naše umrle ljubljene Marie Florjan, ki ji je bil uspeh S.Ž.Z. tako pri srcu.
Prosim, da mi oprostite veliko napako v Zarji, ko sem zapisala, da bo konvenciji gostovala št. 12, ali resnično bi bilo št. 43. Naši tajnici želimo srečno potovanje po Evropi ter veselo vrnitev domov. Bolnim članicam naj ljubi Bog da zdravje ter molimo za umrle sosestre.

Krasne jesenske dneve imamo. Z 21. septembrom smo nastopili jesenski čas. Danes, ko pišem je še toplomir skočil na 83 F°. Še prav poletna vročina. Zelo suho je po vrtovih. Tako suhe jeseni že dolgo nismo imeli. Pa vedno je jesen po svoje lepa. Pa pravijo, da če ne bi imeli lepe pomladi, da tudi jeseni, bi ne bilo. Po naših vrtovih in gredah, nam je vse dobro obrodilo. Od časa do časa nam je dež zalival tako, da še zalivati ni bilo potrebno. Vsega je dovolj obrodilo za domače potrebe.
Še vlagali smo, bi rekla vkuhavali — v steklenice. In zmrzovalnike smo polnili za zimski čas. Jesenske cvetlice še krasijo naše vrtove in okolico naših domov.
Septembersko sejo pri naši podružnici smo opustile, tako mi je tajnica Fanny Ulle po telefonu sporočila. Nekatere članice smo šle na potovanje in to prav na tretjo sredo v mesecu.
Kakor vsako leto, tudi letos 14. avgusta na drugo sredo smo
imeli piknik slov. upokojnici v klubovih prostorih in še kar dobro obiskan. Za žejne je bilo dobro pri bari, in sodček piva še zvanaj; za lačne je poskrbela gospa Anny Cicelič in njena sestra Tončka. Tudi peciva ni manjkalo. Imamo zelo prijaznega tajnika gospoda Georg Rakar, in skrbnega tudi, da nam je res vsem priljubljen. Takoj je povedal, da je toliko dobitkov, da bo vsak dobil po dva. In res je bilo tako, še več kot po dva. Moj mož je bil tako srečen, daje bil petkrat klican.
Predsednik tega našega društva upokojenev Vik Melle in seveda tudi tajnik g. Rakar sta organizirala, da smo šli na izlet z autobusom, s 48 sedeži. To 18. septembra, kot sem že zgoraj omenila. Tako smo avtobus v Fairportu zasedli zjutraj in dopolnili še v Euclidu in se odpeljali z Marijino pesmijo na pot. — Češčena si Marija je angelski glas, bo zadnja ara hilu Murija prid' po nas — proti Millerburgu, Ohio na Amish Farme. Tam smo si ogledali njih farme, trgovine, tovarno sira in trgovine spominčkov; in tudi nakupili vsaka po svoji želji. Koruzni zdrob je bil nekaj posebnega; žganci, zlato rumeni, kot kanalčki smo jim rekli v starem kraju. Žal mi je, da nisem še ajdove moke kupila.
Amški farmar tudi lastuje trgovino; povabil nas je v podkletne prostore, kjer je bila soba za kakih 50 do 60 sedežev. Kazal je turistom v filmskih slikah njih življenske običaje.

Mesec november je mesec spomina na naše pokojne. Kdo jih nima? Mesec se pričenja s praznikoma Vseh svetih in Vernih duš. Stoletja dolgo naš narod prav ta dva dneva družno s Cerkvijo posveča svoje misli in spomin tistim, ki so že odšli v večnost. Tudi mi na tujem se bomo pridružili mnogim, ki na te dni obiščejo grobove tukaj umrlih ali pa v duhu poromajo na domače pokopališče v daljni domovini. V mislih bomo tiho opazovali, tam svoje sorodnike, ki stoje ob grobovih na domačih pokopališčih ter polagajo nanje cvetlice in prižigajo svečke. V njih počiva ali naša mati, naš oče, bratje in sestre. Vsako srce se stisne ob spominu na tiste, ki smo jih ljubili in oni so ljubili nas. Nekoč so živeli, a sedaj jih ni več. Samo s spomenika tiho zro na nas njihova imena.

Veter trka na drobna okna, nocoj se samote boji, klenkovček v mrak toži in joka, v burji zaduše trpi.
Vsi smo z nočjo obmolknili, zrak po trohnobi diši, luč prav do kraja odvili, do njih poiskali poti.

Nazadnje nam je med drugim povedal: vi vsi mislite, da sem jaz Amish pa nisem, kaj je, pa nam ni povedal. Kar nismo imeli v programu, nam je ta farmar skomandiral vožnjo na dveh dirah s traktorjem. Na te dire-vozove-so pripravili po dve vrsti vezanih slamnatih bal, jih z nekom pregrnili in na te bale smo se posedli romarji. To je bilo nekaj posebnega in nepričakovanega. Vozili smo se kakih deset milj po njegovi farmi.
V	restavrantu Victorian House je bilo rezervirano imenitno kosilo. Ogledali smo si tudi največjo uro, The Cuckoo Clock Capitol of Amerika.
Vožnja je bila krasna, med hribi in dolinami posejani z ogromnimi kmetijami in hišami in vsemi gospodarskimi poslopji. Vreme
pa odlično, prav nam naklonjeno okoli 75° F. Vožnja nazaj proti domu pa tudi zelo lepa.
Na tukajšem AMLA Recreation Centru — SDZ Slovenskem Vrtu
—	na 10. in 11. avgusta ke bilo pa res nekaj krasnega, Slovenska kmečka ohcet. Pa res zasluži gospa Eda Vovk-Pusl naše častitke, ker je tako lepe stvari, predstave skupaj spravila. Prav tako tudi naše častitke gospej urednici naše Zarje Corini Leskovar z izvrstno skupino mladcev folklornih plesalcev. Le od daleč smo imeli čast Vas videti in slišati po mikrofonu. Res veliko truda! Vaše telesne in duševne moči žrtvujete za našo slovensko mladino in slovenski narod. Bog živi Vas in Vaše mlade plesalce. Podrobnosti mi ni mogoče na tem mestu opisati,
gotovo boste bolj obširno čitale v Ameriški Domovini.
Sedaj pa se o naših balin-carskih tekmah. Vse poletje smo se zbirali ob večerih na prostoru Slov. kluba v Fairportu, vseh 16 timov-grup-. Tudi vreme nam je bilo naklonjeno, le par večerov nam je dež malo ponagajal. To je res dober šport, tekati in se gibati zunaj na svežem zraku; dostikrat to razvedrilo prežene vse skrbi in dnevne probleme, vse telo se razprosti, posebno v poletni vročini, ko hladna sapica piha od jezera.
Šveda je članov precej iz odaljenih krajev, pa so se vseeno pridno udeležavali. Če je pa kateri izostal radi važnega vzroka, opravila ali bolezni, smo imeli pa tudi nadomestnih 12 članov.

Bil sem skoraj enajst let od doma in služil sem v vojskah, katerim je zapovedoval gospod princ Evgenius. Težko mi je bilo živeti in skoraj vsekdar je bilo več palic od menaže. Ali na svojega Boga nisem nikdar pozabil. Tudi domačih krajev ne, na katere sem mislil, in to v najhujšem ognju krvavih afer in tudi kadar smo lenarili po zimskih kvartirjih. Nikdo ne ve, kaj je vojska, če ni bil sam v vojski. Raztepeno je ljudstvo povsod in vselej, kjer se tepo armade: takrat ni varno nobeno življenje, takrat nista varna ne ženska ne otrok. Vse take reči so videle moje oči. Videl sem umirati starce, videl sem, kako se je sila delala dekletom, videl sem, kako so se palile koče in kako so se plenila in podirala mesta. Nisem bil s srcem pri krvavem tem rokodelstvu: sv. Izidor mi je priča, da se nisem udeleževal morij in ne plenitev. Ker sem prisegel, sem ostal zvest svoji službi in ni je bilo moči, ki bi mi bila izneverila polkovi zastavi. Vojske vzlic temu nisem bil vesel in k Bogu sem molil, da bi jo ustavil z močno svojo roko.
Kar sedaj zapišem, bodi zapisano v ta namen, da vedo tisti, ki bodo za nami živeli na Visokem, da se je njihovim prednikom prehuda godila in da niso živeli v takih dobrih časih, kakor bodo oni živeli.
Naprej smo bili pri Zenti, kjer smo vzeli turški tabor, pobili trideset tisoč Turkov in ubili celo prvega vezirja, da je tuški sultan prav grdo jokal za njim. Plena je bilo na ostajanje in tudi meni se je odkazal pravičen delež. Pozneje smo vihrali na Laško in princ Evgenius je podil Francoze pred sabo. Pri Cremoni smo ujeli francoskega generala in pri Luzzari jih je gospod Evgenius znova naklestil. Pozneje so nas vzeli z Laškega ter nas prestavili na Nemško in to zopet
proti Francozom. Pri Hochstattu smo imeli krvavo bataljo, kjer so bili tudi Angleži z nami. Lepi ljudje, močni možje, ali jezik govore, da ga morda sami koma) umejo. Privadil sem se, ko so nas tako sem in tja metali laškemu in francoskemu jeziku, ali angleškemu ne.
Pri vseh aferah sem ostal zdrav. Krogle so žvižgale mimo mene, turške sablje so se bliskale nad mano, s sabljami so suvali proti meni ali Bog Oče je pazil nad mano, da mi je telo ostalo nepoškodovano. Svojo dušo sem sem si varoval sam, da se ni zaletela v škodo. Moje obnašanje je bilo všeč tistim, ki so bili postavljeni nadme, zatorej sem po dolgi in trudapolni službi dosegel precejšnjo čast, da so me imenovali za desetnika. Bil sem tudi v gloriozni batalji pri Turinu, kjer je tičal v francoskih kleščah vrli naš kapitan. Prihiteli smo mu na pomoč in naskočili visoke francoske okope. Mali sovražniki so streljali na nas, da se je veliko naših zavalilo po melini navzdol. Bil sem že skoraj pri vrhu, in takrat je bilo nekaj naših cesarskih, ki so hoteli popihati navzdol. S palico sem jih tepel ter jih gonil naprej. Tedaj se mi je zdelo, da me je eden teh bojazljivcev z roko sunil v prsi; kar brez pričakovanja sem ležal na tleh in na levi nad srcem mi je hitela kri po obleki. Mi ni bilo dobro, zadela me je francoska mušketa. Bil sem v nezavesti.
Ko sem se zopet zavedel, sem ležal v lazaretu. Obvezan sem bil in uda nisem mogel ganiti. Ležal sem na deskah in kosti nisem čutil v sebi. Ko sem se ozrl po prostoru okrog sebe, jih je ležalo precej na enakih ležiščih. Vsi so bili obvezani in kri je v rdečih lisah pri obvezah silila na dan. A glej, takrat sem videl, da sem obvezan na prsih. In ko sem svojo glavo obrnil na levo, je bila tudi moja obveza težko krvava. Tedaj sem se spomnil, da sem obležal v batalji in da sem prestreljen prav tako, kakor mi je nekdaj vedežavala ciganka za Blegošem. (St 3 £ \

HJeca — zemlja m ljudje
“Tako, Bog bodi z njo”.
Mizar Borko je mignil sosedu. Dvignila sta mrliški pokrov, ki je ves črn in neizprosno svečan slonel ob zadnji steni.
Smrten molk je zajel sobo. Oči vseh so se zapičile v moža in pokrov.
Že sta bila moža pri rakvi, že sta se vzpela, zdaj bosta pokrila.
“Mamika, Mamika.”
Grozoten krik je razdrl tišino. Trinastletna Trezika ni mogla več vzdržati. Zakričalo ji je srce in jo bliskoma vrglo pred mrtvaški oder. Z vso silo je bušila v sovražni pokrov, da je prestrašena možaka skoro prevrglo. Toliko da jima ni pokrov zdrknil iz rok. Nato se je vrgla prek izpitega trupla, ga objemala in poljubljala bledi obraz. In solze so tekle in tekle.
“Ne mamika, ne bodo vas zabili, ne, nikdar. Saj sem jaz pri vas,
jaz.”
Za hip se je oddahnila, pa je spet zahlipala z vso silo.
In zaTreziko so vzdihovali in jokali vsi, odprla jim je srce in oči.
Najstarejša sestra Milika — imela je petnast let in je bila gluha in nema — je vsa neznatna slonela ob postelji in debele solze so tekle.
Desetletni Jakob se je počasi bližal Treziki in si z rokami brisal oči. Pa seje umaknil, se oprijel Milikine janke in žalostno zatulil.
Drugi trije, Franček, Štefica in Vinko, so se boječe stiskali k babici ob peči. Izprva so začudeni gledali, zdaj Treziko, zdaj Miliko in Jakoba, potem pa so se drug za drugim zagnanli v glasen jok. Babica jih je vsa obupana mirila. Pa nič ni pomagalo. Še sama je v svoji slabotnosti zadrgetala in skrila bolestno razoran obraz v okorele dlani.
“Mene bi vzel, mene, ne njo”, je v mislih očitala Bogu. “Pred dobrim mescem si igrabil njega, zdaj njo. O Bog, da nisem stara in izkušena bi recla, da si krivičen. Kaj čem, kaj čem s to nebogljeno deco?”
Za hip je otopela v mislih, vse ji je izpadlo iz spomina. Pa je zaslišala Treziko. Dvignila je glavo, sklenila roke in glasno zajavkala:
“O Jezus, Jezus križani, ti se me usmili.”
In se je zavedela svoje dolžnosti. Naglo je stopila, toliko da se ni sprevrgla sredi sobe, kajti njene noge so bile stare in protinaste.
“Trezika, Trezika! Bodi pametna! Pomiri se!”
Zgrabila jo je za roko in jo skušala potegniti k sebi. Pa ni šlo. Deklina se je še bolj oklenila mrliča in kričala:
“Ne damo mamike, ne damo!”
In zgnanila sta se Milika in Jakob, v jok so šli Franček, Štefica in Vinko. In so se zvravnali in žalostno odločno vpili:
"Ne damo mamike, ne damo."
Množica na dvorišču je bila tiha in nema.
Priletni župnik je hodil okoli krste, blagoslavljal in molil. Nato se je ustavil in njegov visoki glas je boleče segal v dušo.
Zapeli so pevci, boječe in žalostno.
Kaplan, ki je stal ob župniku, visok in lep, je sklonil glavo. Njegov otroški obraz je drhtel v zagrenjenosti. Videl je pred sabo dom, velik in topel, videl je kmetijo obširno in dišečo, a dom je prazen in kmetija je
—	mrtva. Gospodarja ni, gospodinje ni.
In videl je pred sabo deco. Ko je pokojnica umirala, je bil pri njej. Sveto olje ji je prinesel in popotnico, in gledal v njene oči. Zadnje njene besede so bile: "Mojadeca....”
Šestkrat je visela pri porodu med življenjem in smrtjo, pri sedmem črvičku je žrtvovala razkrižano telo. Sam je krstil dovolj krepkega otročička in še na svoje ime.
“Janez naj bo, Jezusov ljubljenec,” je bilo razbrati s tiho nasmejanih materinih ustnic. “In da bi bil kot ste vi, gospod kaplan in kot je bil Kristusov nedolžni učenec. Gospodov glasnik, tih in svet.”
Kaplan Janez se je zdrznil. Preveč je utonil v svoje misli.
Pevci so utihnili. Mizar Borko, ki je delal rakve in pri pogrebih vse uravnaval in vodil, je stopil pred krsto, se obrnil proti hišnim vratom in se namesto pokojnice s pojočim glasom poslovil:
“Z Bogom ostani, dom in kmetija.”
Tedaj je spet bruhnilo iz Trezike. Prej se je že nekako umirila. Pevci so jo zazibali v sanjavo brezčutnost. Zdaj se je znova zavedela in vpila:
“Mamika, mamika!”
Kričala je in tulila, hropeče je poljubljala rakev, nato besno grebla z nohti vanjo, teptala z nogami in vpila: “Mamika.”
“Saj je znorela,” je zaznal mizar Borko. Stopil je k njej in jo rahlo prijel za rame. Izvila se mu je in vpila naprej.
Gluha in nema Milikaje nepremično stala zadaj in strmela predse. Njene oči so bile suhe in grozne in v lice je bila bleda ko smrt.
Jakob se je držal njene janke, solze so mu umazano se sušile na drobnem obrazu, jokavi glas je zastal v grlu in najraje bi umrl.
Babica se ni mogla več držati pokonci. Dva moža sta jo podpirala.
“Trezika, Trezika kaj delaš? O deca, dečica moja, kaj bo, kaj bo? In jaz naj bom vaša mati in oča, jaz, ki do vratu stojim v grobu in se mi že glava sklanja vanj. In gospodar in gospodinja naj bom
domu in še kmetiji O Jezus, o Jezus križani, ti se
me usmili!”
Babica je pobožala malo Štefico, ki je že pozabila jokati. Poslušala je čudno godrnjanje stare matere in se zazrla v Treziko, pa ni nič razumela. Ko je dotaknila trepetajoča stara roka, je začela jokati.
Franček in Vinko sta stala v prvi vrsti. Junaško sta opazovala ves obred, zlasti ministranta v lepih opravah sta jima ugajala. Ponosna sta bila na gospoda župnika, gospoda kaplana, na pevce in tudi na to, da je bila taka množica ljudi na njihovem dvorišču, domačih in tujih.
Babici je bilo hudo kakor nikoli v njenem dolgem življenju.
“In Janezek, ti nedolžni Janezek, kaj bo pa s tabo?” se je spomnila na novorojenca, ki ga je za te dni vzela k sebi Borkovica.
“Ta novorojeni je poslednje breme zame in morti najtežje.”
Ljudje so gledali otroke in si brisali oči, se usekovali in tolažili. Kar v grozi so tonili v nemoč in neznanost.
Tedaj je mizar Borko krepko prijel Treziko in jo potisnil na kraj. Odločno je mahnil nosačem. Pristopili so in počasi dvignili rakev.
Vse naokrog je bilo belo, le sprevod je bil črn, črn. Sneg je zapadel visoko in vse Krčevine so bile v beli nedolžnosti. Iz cerkve je zazvonilo. Pogrebcem je dobro delo zvonjenje in lepa se jim je zdela bela pokrajina. Milika, Trezika in Jakob so hodili za rakvijo, drugi trije so ostali doma pri babici.
Sprevod je bil dolg in žalostno glasen. Otroci, moški in ženske, vse je molilo rožni venec. V sredini pa se je zibala krsta, pred njo oba duhovnika, ministranta in pevci.
Župnik je v mislih sestavljal besede, ki jih bo govoril ob grobu. “Kaj bo z nebogljeno deco, če se nikdo ne pobriga zanjo? čujte, ljudje božji, srce imate, ne pozabite na dečico. In tudi za grunt skrbite. Saj veste, da zemlja zahteva ljubezni in delavnih rok....”
Mladi kaplan je tudi stopal počasi, a obraz mu je žarel.
“Gospod Bog, naj bom tvoj Simon iz Cirene, naj bom nizek in voljan, samo da bom močan, močan. Za to ljudstvo naj nosim križ in tudi za to deco, ki je vsa neizkušena, ker drugače ji bo križ strl dušo in srce.”
Kaplan se je lahko nasmehnil in toplo mu je postalo pri srcu.
Že je videl pred sabo kmetijo in vrednega oskrbnika na njej. Doraščajoča deca bo delavna: vse sama opravi, ker ljubi zemljo in dom. Iz Janezka bo postal Janez in tudi študent. Saj je priden in pametan. O, saj bo končal gimnazijo in bogoslovje. Že daruje prvo našo za pokojnega očeta in mater.
Kaplan Janez se je hipoma zdrznil v svojih mislih.
Nekdo je molil z globkim glasom: ki je za nas križan bil. Iz farne cerkve je zvonilo tiho in žalostno. Sprevod se je bližal grobu.
St. 68:
Zmagovalec teh poletnih iger, (kot sem že v septemberski Zarji omenila) je bila grupa od Hungarian Cluba in sicer: John Ando, Carl Caplinger, Bob Trexler in Don Vendi, in ti so dobili lepe trofeje.
Na soboto 14. septembra je bil banket od vseh 85 balincarjev in sicer Sirlon Steak večerja, z vsemi prikuhami in veliko torto z napisom Congratulation balincarji. Opisala sem malo vse naše razvedrilo in delovanje v pretečnem poletju.
Vse katere obhajate rojstni dan
v mesecu oktobru, še posebno Mrs. Jennie Lagina v častitljivih letnih, Vam kličemo še na mnoga leta in zdravja, članice št. 68.
Prav tako vsem našim sestram, katere se boste veselile v novembru svojega rojstnega dneva med svojimi dragimi. Kar pa še posebno bo: nad vse pomenben praznik rostva Mrs. Fannie Skrabec, katera praznuje 5. novembra svoj 90 rojstni dan. Ona še vedno rada kuha in se sama oskrbuje in rada prebira naš mesečnik Zarja. Bog Vas živi še na mnoga leta!
Sedaj pa drage bralke naše Zarje! Zahvalni dan je le nekaj dni pred nami, kateri nas opominja, da se zahvalimo Bogu, za vse prejete dobrote posebno za zdravje, v naši svobodni domovini.
Pred vsem pa pazite, da Vas ne bo puran preveč obrcal.
Lepo pozdravljam vse članice širom Amerike, posebno v uradu gospo Leskovar in gospo Ano Gaber, katera nam vedno najde zanimive dopise in resnične.

MOJ DOM
Po dolgih sem letih prišel spet domov.
Hiša pod gričem zelenim — oh, ljubljeni krov. Zvesto me je čakala mnogo že let, v njej mati molila: Sin vrni se spet.
"Mati ti moja, prišel sem nazaj,
da še enkrat te vidim — tu hit je moj raj. "
Za uvelo je roko mamo prijel, pritisnil na srce, ljubeče objel.
"Iskal sem jaz srečo po svetu okrog, nisem je naše! — to ve le sam liog.
Le tukaj pri tebi še sreča živi, pod krovom se domačim srce umiri.
Svet ima lepoto — ter dosti blaga,
Al' ljubezen domačo nihče ti ne da.
Je v srcu praznota — je prazna vrzel,
oh, doma sem zdaj srečen, da svet bi objet. ”

VISOŠKA KRONIKA
Tistimal je bilo, da je stopil v lazaret majhen človek, na katerem ni bilo opaziti nič posebnega.
Pri vstopu je spoštljivo vzel z glave triogelnik. Za njim se je trlo vse polno samih generalov in oficirjev, na katerih se je svetlilo obilo zlata in katerih obleke so bile obšite z drobnimi in dragimi čipkami. Princ Evgenius pa ni nosil ne zlata, ne preveliko čipk, pa se je vzlic temu takoj dalo spoznati, da je on naš vojskovodja in naš general, pristopil je k vsaki postelji, razgovarjal se je z najnižjim vojakom in ga tolažil ob postelji trpljenja in bolečin. Težko ranjenim se je tudi zahvalil.
Tudi k meni je prišel, ali odgovarjati nisem mogel radi velike svoje slabosti. Ranocelniki so nekaj mu šepetali, nakar se je tudi meni zahvalil. To je bila edina zahvala, da sem bil v Laške Dežele nesel na trg svoje življenje za cesarja, ki ga pozneje ni nič več povpraševal po meni, kako se mi godi in kako izhajam.
Drugo jutro se prebudim, in glej tik mene prazna postelja prejašnjega dne je dobila svojega bolnika. Ponoči so bili prevlekli težkega jezdeca, ki je sedaj ležal na nji. Poprej so mu bili odrezali roko in nogo, tako da je tičal v širokih obvezah. Bil je tako slab, da ni dal glasu od sebe in naj so mu bile bolečine še tako neznosne.
Prebudil sem se torej in svoje oči sem nehote obrnil proti sosedni postelji. Pred mano je ležal človek z dolgim in suhim obrazom, ki je bil z divjo brado gosto zarašen in v katerem so oči ležale v globokih jamah prav kakor pri mrliču. Upiral in upiral sem svoj pogled v tega soseda in v slabotne moje možgane je silila misel: kje sem že videl tega človeka? Tako sem ga gledal cele ure. Navsezadnje se je prebudil tudi sosed in v jamah na obrazu sta
se utrnili dve medli luči. Hudo je stokal, nato se j€ pa njegov pogled uprl vame in zrla sva se iz oči v oči.
Moj Bog, kje sem že videl ta obraz? Bil je preoran in opustošen kakor njiva, če je udaril ob plohi hudornik čeznjo. Ganiti se nisva mogla in niti glave nisva mogla dvigniti, le gledala sva eden drugega. Naposled se je kakor iz dalje tam zadaj za hribom začul onemogel glas:
“Izidor, — gotovo si ti, Izidor ?
Božja Porodnica! — Bil je zares Marks Wulfing
—	tisti moj nekdanji veliki hlapec in moj bratranec, ki je prinesel tolikšno nesrečo v našo hišo. Sedaj pa leži tukaj od Boga zvržen in zapuščen, z odrezano desno roko in z odrezano levo nogo.
“Marks — ? Ali si res Marks?
“Videš, da sem res jaz,” je jecljal “In umiram, pa umreti skoraj ne smem. Z roko sem krivo pričal, nogo pa prerezal, da sem namočil kamen.”
Odgovoril sem mu takoj:
“Umrjeva, če bo hotela božja volja.”
Zaihtel je:
“Odpusti mi Izidor. Odpustite mi vsi.”
V srce se mi je zasmilil in sem rekel: “Odpuščam ti, Marks, in vem, da ti je Agata tudi že odpustila. Radi tega lahko brez skrbi stopiš pred Boga sodnika. Odpuščeno ti bodi, da bo tudi nam odpuščeno.”
Zaprosil je: “Duhovnik naj pride.”
Poklicali so kaplana, ki je imel s pogrebi in previdenji preobil opravka, a vendar je prav hitro prišel, ker mu ni bilo neznano, da v lazaretu vojščak z odrezano nogo vsak hip lahko umrje. Dolgo sta govorila in gospod je nekaj zapisoval, potem je dal bolniku odvezo in končno je Marksu vodil roko, da je postavil znamenje svetega križa pod tisto, kar je bil kaplan napisal. Napisal pa je bil, da je težki jezdec Marks Wulffing, ko je ranjeni ležal v lazaretu pri Turinu na svoji smrtni postelji spokorno in skesano priznal, da je na sodbi v Škofji Loki lažnivo pričal proti Agati Schvvarzkobler in da je vse, kar je tedaj govoril, bilo izmišljeno in da prosi njo in vse druge, da bi mu odpustili in prizanesli, Bog daj. Sam kaplan je to svedočbo podpisal in jo meni izročil.
V noči potem je Marks Wulffing umrl. Moja želja je, da bi mu svetila večna luč.-----
Ko sem se vračal nazaj na svoj dom, je bila pomlad. Hruška in češnja sta cveteli in cela Poljanska dolina je nosila belo pečo. Nista me pričakovala Agata in Jurij, a sprejela sta me, kakor da sem vstal od smrti. Onemogel sem bil in vojska me je bila pohodila. In ta dva sta me objemala brez konca in kraja in odprla sta mi celo svojo hišo. Po ti hiši se je takrat vlačilo majhno dekletce, ki je sicer še komaj lazilo, pa s svojim glasom ponilo že skoraj vsak kot in kotiček; tu in tam se je ulegal Agati mrak na lice in njeno oko me je včasih spominjalo na poglede, s katerimi se je tisti dan, prej nego je stopila v vodo v Loki, ozirala po Poljanski dolini navzgor.

‘South or Bust’
Hi Boys or Girls,
Today was a dreary and wet day. The sky was one big gray cloud. Despite the gloominess of the day, I think it was one of the prettiest days of I he year, because 1 witnessed one of God’s miracles.
This morning when I went in my bedroom to get ready for work, 1 heard an awful racket coming from outside. The trees were full of birds. 1 mean they were totally covered! Each branch had six to a dozen birds on it. Then one bird flew out of the tree, another followed, and another Before long the trees were empty. The flight to the south for the winter had begun.
As 1 drove to work, 1 noticed from
the north, going south, a long black streak fly against the sky. The streak was birds. Hundreds of birds.
Seeing them go brought tears to my eyes. Maybe because I know that winter is just around the corner.
When 1 was living down in Florida, I saw the brids start for the north one Spring. Tears came to my eyes at that time, too.
1 just can’t help but be amazed at this little miracle. How do they know when it is time to go South? When to go North? How do they know how to get there. Many of them were hatched after mom and dad returned from the South in the Spring. They’ve never been South, but yet they know the way.
We may never know the answer of how and why, but I’m glad I got to witness the flight to the South.
