St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 35/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 18.9.2011 25. NEDELJA MED LETOM 25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Zgodba dveh mož Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Prvi se je vrnil domov nejevoljen. Ni pozdravil, pokrivalo in plašč je jezno odvrgel, k mizi je sedel molče. Nataknjen si videti, je rekla žena. Kako ne bi bil ob takšnem gospodarju? Zjutraj nas I je najel in ves dan smo garali kot črna živina. [ Prenašali težo dneva in vročino. Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendents of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school, as many already have done, especially this past summer on the school excursion to Slovenia. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL 2011-12 started on September 17, at 9:00 A.M. in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summer of 2000 and this past summer, we organized an excursion of Slovenia for them, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last two excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 18. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at Slovenian School. VESTNIK 2011 | 279 Sunday's Readings I 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Isaiah 55:6-9 The prophet stresses God's utter transcendence and God's merciful love - these are complementary and not contradictory. Second Reading Philip. 1:20-24.27 Paul desires to die to be more fully with Christ, but it is God's will that he remain on this earth to carry out his mission. Gospel Matthew 20:1-16 God cannot be measured by any human standards. As the source of everything that exists, the Lord can bestow his blessings according to his loving kindness. Illustration An ancient philosopher wrote that there is an art to being generous. If people have the resources to be generous, they can do so without vulgar showing off, or making those who receive their generosity feel patronised. People who are truly generous are those who do not value money in itself, but only in as much as they can spend it usefully on others. There are also two contrasting sorts of character. One is the prodigal person who spends money foolishly, like the son in the parable. The other is the miser, who hoards money, and even steals the goods of others. The character Harpagon in the play The Miser, by the seventeenth-century French playwright Molière, is such a person. He defrauds his own horses of their oats, and instead of "giving" people a good day, he "lends" them a good day. There is also an art to receiving. We can receive presents, or help, or a compliment, graciously. Or we can be ungrateful, sullen and resentful. Even worse, we can resent the good things that come to others, and be eaten up with envy. The same ancient philosopher, Aristotle, defined envy as "a kind of distress at apparent success on the part of one's equals". It is, then, feeling put out, or even bitter, at the good that happens to other people, especially people close to us, or of the same group. The ancient world had a special term for this: it was called the "evil eye". Gospel Teaching In the Greek of today's Gospel reading, at the end of the story the landowner asks the grumbling worker, "have you got the evil eye because I am generous?" In Mark's Gospel, Jesus lists the "evil eye" as one of the things that come out of people to make them unclean. There was much superstition attached to this phrase, but in the New Testament it is a vivid image for intense envy and resentment. This was thought to show itself in people's looks, just as we might say "green with envy". So in the Gospel reading we have the contrast of the generosity of the landowner and the envious reaction of the labourers. We might see the landowner as representing God, and the workers as the people of the Old Testament. The Jewish people had laboured under the law of Moses for many centuries, and now that Jesus was also bringing in the Gentiles to be saved, some of them felt a certain resentment. Certainly Paul's letters show us that there were disputes between Jewish "Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?" Christians and those who were converted from paganism. Such tensions would be natural in the formation of a new society. Perhaps the parable is a warning against being blinded by tensions such as this. Application But the parable has a wider application than the early Church. We may at times react against the injustice that we see in the world, and often we are right to do so. There is a proper sense of indignation when we see a real injustice done. However, as far as our relations with God go, we have no cause for envy. Like the landowner in the parable, God bestows gifts to people according to the divine will, and everyone has been given some gift. The basic gift is, of course, life. Without that, we would have nothing either to moan about or to rejoice in. As St Paul asks the Corinthians in this regard, "What do you possess that you have not received?" (1 Corinthians 4:7). Blessed John Henry Newman said: "God has created me to do him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do his work." Malo čez eno smo v cerkvi obhajali sveto mašo, ki jo je vodil g. Kopeinig Jože in ob somaševanju Valentina Batiča, Antonia Burje, Antona Rozmariča in Draga Gačnika.
