Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 28/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 10.7.2011 15.in 16. NEDELJA MED LETOM 15th & 16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb ŽUPNIK - PASTOR Naslov - address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Pogum za nov začetek Poletni mesece prinašajo v naš vsakodnevni in običajni ritem, ki ga poznamo skozi vse leto, vsaj nekaj različnosti. ČUTIM SLOVENIJO - SLOVENIJA VČERAJ, DANES IN JUTRI! »DRAGA MLADIH«. Organizatorji vsako leto dobivajo podporo uglednih osebnosti slovenskega javnega, kulturnega in cerkvenega življenja. Sunday's Readings I 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading - Isaiah 55:10-11 Isaiah compares the meaning and sequence of natural events with the power of God's creative word, which never fails to achieve its purpose. Second Reading - Romans 8:18-23 Redeemed humanity and all of creation share in the hope of eternal glory. Gospel - Matthew 13:1-23 Seeds are scattered on the earth and fall on hard, poor and rich soil. Illustration "The Secret of Master Cornille" is one of a number of tales that appear in the classic book Letters from my Windmill, first published in 1869 by the French writer Alphonse Daudet. Old Cornille had been a miller for sixty years. On the hills surrounding the village in Provence where he lived were many windmills with "sails turning in the mistral above the pines, and long strings of little donkeys laden with sacks going up and down the paths". When new, steam-driven flour mills appeared on the scene and the old windmills were made redundant, he fiercely opposed the change, shut himself up in his windmill and let the world go by. Yet, curiously, even though no corn was delivered to his mill, its sails kept turning and every evening Cornille could be seen driving his donkey laden with what appeared to be big sacks of flour. No one was allowed inside his mill; indeed no one got past the "big, lean cat lying in the sun on the window-ledge giving you an evil look". No one, that is, until his granddaughter, Vivette, and her boyfriend, determined that they would tell him of their wish to marry, climbed a ladder and got into the mill through an upper window. Cornille was nowhere to be seen, neither was there any corn, nor sacks of flour; only sacks of stones and debris from pulled-down windmills. These were the sacks that he had made his donkey carry up and down the paths each evening. He had pretended that his windmill was working because he wanted to save it and because his old way of life was the only way he knew. However, once old Cornille's secret was out, the neighbours rallied round and made sure that until the end of his days he had enough corn to keep the sails of his windmill turning. Gospel Teaching Secrets are of many kinds; and we all have secrets sometimes. But secrets have the habit of coming into the light sooner or later. They seldom remain secrets for ever. One of the purposes of a parable is to challenge the listeners to "hear with their ears, understand with their heart", and acknowledge the truth about themselves so that they may be converted and healed by the Lord. The truth about ourselves is always known to God, but more often than not we barely recognise it, and if we do we probably prefer to keep it hidden - or secret - from others. In the parable of the sower, neither the hardtrodden soil, nor the soil around the rocks and the thorns rejects the seed: this soil simply does not have the depth to allow growth. The soil symbolises all the different kinds of people in the Church who, on hearing the Gospel, do not reject it; they accept it in faith. But if their faith is shallow or if material things are allowed to strangle their faith, then there will not be enough depth for God's life to grow within them. A word is dead when it is said, some say. I say it just begins to live that day (Emily Dickinson). "Listen, anyone who has ears!" Sunday's Readings 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading,Wisdom 12:13. 16-19 The Lord is strong, yet mild in judgement. Second Reading, Romans 8:26-27 The Spirit expresses our pleas to God when we cannot find the words we need. Gospel - Matthew 13:24-43 The Lord allows good and evil to flourish together until the time of the harvest. Illustration St Augustine of Hippo has been called the greatest of the Latin Fathers of the Church. Born in AD 354, he grew up in what is now modern Algeria. Although brought up a Christian by his mother Monica, he was not baptised, and at sixteen moved to Carthage to complete his education. He was soon involved with a young woman and had a much-loved son by her, Adeodatus. He was influenced by the teachings of Manichaeism, which preached the existence of dual divinities, spirit and matter, good and evil. Augustine moved to Europe, taking up teaching posts in first Rome and then Milan. There he came under the influence of St Ambrose, another great Father of the Church. Torn between the promise of worldly success and marriage on the one hand, and dedicating himself fully to God on the other, he finally chose God after reading the passage in St Paul's letter to the Romans in which the apostle exhorts his listeners to "give up all the things we prefer to do under cover of the dark; let us arm ourselves and appear in the light". He was baptised together with his son and set off back to Africa. There he set up a community, was ordained priest and quite rapidly became Bishop of Hippo, a post he would carry out for the remaining thirty-four years of his life with great care and understanding, all the time writing the many books, letters and sermons that would become the bedrock of the Western Church's theology for centuries to come. Gospel Teaching We sometimes have a rather machine-like notion of God. We expect God to reward us or punish us rather like a spiritual slot machine. Perhaps, like the young Augustine, we too have a touch of Manichaeism about us. Good is good, evil is evil, and don't get the two confused. Life is, of course, not neatly divided like this. It is messy, and the parables in today's Gospel reflect the way God works with us in the midst of our uncertainty and doubt. On occasions in the Old Testament it does appear that God operates on the principle of "one strike and you are out". We think of the story of the eviction of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, and of poor Moses striking the rock twice in the desert and being forbidden entry to the Promised Land. Yet on other occasions, as for example with King David, God is only too eager to forgive and give people another chance. In these parables of the kingdom we are given a picture of God gradually transforming us from within, allowing good and evil to flourish together and waiting patiently for the mysterious growth that occurs in the life cycle of seeds and the miraculous expansion of yeast in dough. The Lord longs for us to turn to him, but is not impatient; he gives us time to develop all the skills and talents he has endowed us with so as to use them on his behalf. We go to church, not because we are saints, but because we are sinners, sinners who know that we are sinners, but who are willing to strive for something better. f-\ "Let them both grow till the harvest."
