DOMOVINA AMERICAN IN SPIRIT FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE ONLY AMERICAN HOME SLOVENIAN MORNING DAILY NEWSPAPER NO. 132 CLEVELAND, OHIO, THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 4TH 1936 LETO XXXIX. — VOL. XXXIX. V Srbiji zapuša ženo in otroke. V Hayes, So. Zapušča ženo in 6 otrok. Obenem sta vložila nove pred-oge glede nameravanih davkov. Vojaki so bili prideljeni zrako-plovnemu oddelku laške armade. Laški vojaki so spremljali večje število trukov na glavni cesti med Makale in Addis Ababo. Naenkrat so bili obkoljeni od ogromnega števila Abesincev. Laški vojaki so imeli s seboj radio aparat, s katerim so takoj začeli klicati na pomoč. Abesinci so odpeljali večino zaloge živil. -o-- Hčerka umrla Včeraj popoldne je preminula 10 let stara edina hčerka družine Joseph in Alice KozogLav, Speaker Byrns umri Predsednik Roosevelt kritizira najvišjo sodnijo radi plač Washington, 4. junija. These people have the impression that SDZ is for Slovenes only. This is far from the truth, for any good, healthy person may become a member, regardless of nationality. There is, however, one exception to an otherwise free, democratic rule of order, namely, that SDZ will not accept a negro into the organization. SDZ has within its fold members of all nationalities. There are Croatian«, Czechs, Slovaks, English, Irish, Italian, German and even Jew. SDZ takes all nationalities into its motherly bosom. Remember that, when you go out to get new members. There are many of you who have friends among different nationalities. Tell them about SDZ, how it welcomes all to its family fold, what a boon it is to one to be a member of the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association. LET'S ALL DO IT! By Max F. Traven The S. D. Z. Secretarial Campaign is now in full swing. To date we have received approximately 60 new applications Most of these new applicants have joined senior lodges with the exception of eight who have joined two very active English-speaking lodges. Out of ten English-speaking lodges only two have contributed towards making this Secretarial Campaign a success. Calling this campaign the "Secretarial Campaign" does not mean that seven thousand members should sit back in their easy-chairs and let the secretaries do the work. During this big membership drive our motto should be "Every member get a new member." This does not mean only the secretaries but EVERY MEMBER. In the. past issues of the SDZ News I have noticed nu merous articles by the youth showing a big interest in an SDZ Farm. In my opinion this is' a great idea, and I'm behind the Dr. F. J. Kern: HEALTH TALKS First Round-Up Dance Draws Nearer to Date THE DUCTLESS GLANDS Goiter and Hyperthyroidism The thyroid gland regulates the body metabolism, which means the rate at which food is utilized or burned up by the body. The action of the thyroid might be compared to that of a bellows, which fans a flame. When the thyroid is too active, food burned at too rapid a rate, and the patient is thin, nervous and exceedingly active. When there is a deficiency of thyroid secretion, the patient is usually overweight, lazy and mentally sluggish. .. —wi When the thyroid gland becomes enlarged, causing an unsightly bulge on the neck, it is said that the patient has a goiter. There are various types of goiters. With some or them, there is an increase of thyroid secretion, and with others the thyroid functions normally. In still others, the thyroid may be less active than normal. Some types of goiters are harmless and do not require any particular treatment. One example of this type is the enlargement of the thyroid which appeal's in adolescent girls. Once in a while a girl at this age has a goiter of the dangerous type, but usually, WHAT JUNIOR LEAGUERS THINK ABOUT THE SDZ FARM ISSUE movement. In fact, I believe that our older members as well 5t is simply a swelling or en- as the supreme boarU of SDZ can be convinced that the idea of a farm every member will have the privilege of using is an excellent idea. But, first of all, let every one of us ask himself, "What have / done for the betterment of SDZ? How many new members did / get during the past year? Have I any reason to ask favors of SDZ?"!"! fear that many of us would be embarrassed if we had to answer these questions publicly. First of-all you must prove your own belief in the organization, then you can convince others to believe you. Let us go out and see if every English-speaking member in the SDZ can get at least ONE new member. Here is the way Mr. Clark D. Windsor many times approaches his prospects very successfully. "Mr. Prospect, would you shoot a man who handed your family a thousand dollars? Of course, you wouldn't. Therefore, you won't shoot me. Sure, I am an insurance salesman, and I am here to arrange for your family to get some money." This approach does two things. First, it prevents the prospect from resenting the call. Second, it establishes the fact that the caller is an insurance salesman, and from that point he can go ahead without discussing the weather or any other subject that wastes time. I advise you to try this means when meeting a possible applicant, and see if you are turned away as an insurance salesman usually is. If the motto "Every member get a new member," which Mr. John Gornik, general manager of the Secretarial Campaign set up, is carried out, at least to the extent of 75 per . cent among the English-speaking lodges, than I can assure you the SDZ supreme bpard will gladly appropriate funds for the farm, because it will have a background and strong reason for doing the same. Let's go out and prove to the SDZ that we are believers in the organization as an insurance company and not only as a good time organization. Then, too, let us bear in mind the words of the late Will Rogers which I believe are quite applicable at this time: "Let's stop arguing about who did it or who didn't did it; LET'S ALL DO IT!" JUST A MINUTE! By Frank M. Surtz We belong to the Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association but it is surprising how little we know about its spirit, purposes and benefits. It would be to our advantage to learn something about it so that we may fully realize the benefits in protection and in social activities which it offers. Of course, young people with their high spirits and zest for life are primarily interested in social activities and give little thought to the hard facts of life. But there are hard and sad facts of life which we will all face. And it is a wise young person who prepares for these eventualities. The Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association offers many safeguards against, these cruel facts and it surely, must be to our advantage if we know them. ...... .. - -It wi4t-be-the purpose-of- this column to give to its readers information concerning SDZ and if you will spend just a minute with it from time to time I feel certain that you will benefit. While you are reading this page, give this column just a minute. largement due to the increased demands placed on the thyroid gland by the changes that are taking place in the body at that time. The. thyroid sometimes enlarges during pregnancy, too, but returns to normal after the child is born. We live in what is known as a "goiter belt," that is, a place where goiter is more common than in other parts of the world. The area surrounding the Great Lakes is one of the largest of these goiter belts. Others are to be found along the northwest coast, around Seattle especially, in Switzerland, and in the Himalaya mountains in India. The prevalence of goiter in these regions is due to a deficiency of iodine in the water. In regions where iodine is present in the water, this type of goiter is practically unknown. Not all of these goiters result in hyperthyroidism, or excessive activity of the thyroid gland, but an enlarged thyroid is more likely to become excessively active than is a normal gland. A patient with a goiter may go along for years with no symptoms, and then suddenly begin to lose weight, become extremely nervous and irritable, suffer from palpitation and shortness of breath, and his eyes may even begin to bulge out. All these things are signs of hyperthyroidism, which is a serious disease, and should receive treatment at once. When a patient has a goiter he should have a complete physical examination in order to determine whether or not there is excessive thyroid activity. In some cases of this type, if the goiter is not removed, the patient's subsequent health and even his life may be endangered. Rest and relaxation may help temporarily, but usually in order to control the condition of hyperthyroidism, a portion of the thyroid gland must be removed. Some thyroid tissue must be left in or- Nine more days before that much talked of and long awaited First Round-Up sponsored by the Modern Crusaders and the Eastern Stars. Vraneza Visitors from Colorado Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ursich of Pueblo, Colo., are vacationing in Cleveland, and staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Smre-kar of 17201 Grovewood Ave. Mr. L. Ursich is the brother of the three lads that spent two weeks here about a year ago. I believe it must have been they who persuaded him to come to our fair city. Mr. Ursich has gone to see the Cleveland Indians play ball and to his disappointment the Indians lost every time he attended. Regardless of those games lost, here's hoping the Ursiches have been enjoying themselves, and when they go back to their home town, still keep thinking highly of Cleveland and its Slovene people. You probably have all been wondering who that busy new assistant in the Supreme Office is. Well, to begin with, she is Rose Ivancic, sister of Mrs. Julia Pirc now of Lorain, Ohio, who is an ardent supporter of the SDZ. Rose herself has proven her interest in SDZ by taking an active part in the organization of the new lodge Lucky Stars No. 61. She is secretary of the lodge now. Of her schooling we were able to find out that she is a graduate of. St. Vitus School, which awarded her on graduation an American Legion scholarship certificate, and St. Francis Commercial High School where she completed a course in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, secretarial work and commercial law. She graduated in 1931 with first honors. At present Rose is studying accounting through a well-known correspondence school. After graduating from St. Francis, she substituted as lay teacher in the commercial classes in the fall of 1932. Following this substitute work she received employment with Fred Prophet Cafe Co., Fisher Body, Cleveland Division, where she was employed until recently. She was in charge of the night shift there, which work included cashiering and general management. -o- Outing! Outing! OUTING!
