»SPAGHETTI DINNER« V soboto, 29. januarja so dekleta »Catholic Girl's Club« skupaj s starši organizirale »Spaghetti Dinner«. Že kar nekaj časa prej so pri svojih sestankih pripravljale vse potrebno, se dogovarjale za organizacijo in izvedbo programa. Težko je bilo napovedati koliko ljudi bo prišlo. Ob nedeljah in sobotah so pridno prodajale vstopnice. CHILDREN'S AREA AT PARISH BAZAAR We are always working at making a great children's area at our Parish Bazaar and this year is no different. In order to make it fun for kids of all ages, we are always looking for new or almost new items such as toys, teddy bears, books, games - all the things that kids like. If you have anything like this, you can bring these items to church and we will have a box where they can be placed for our helpers to organize. Thanks for always giving the children of our parish such great support. See you at the Bazaar! Sunday's Readings 5th SUNDAY in Ordinary Time First Reading Isaiah 58:7-10 The Lord instructs us to share bread with the hungry and shelter the homeless. If we act with mercy our light will rise in the darkness. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul writes that he did not come to the Corinthians with great skills in oratory or philosophy. He was filled with the power of the Spirit to share news of the crucified Christ. Gospel Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth, the light of the world and a city built on a hilltop. He encourages his disciples to keep God's light in their lives so that others may see and praise God. Illustration At the same time that the empire of the ancient Greeks was flourishing, another civilisation was busy building great cities, with sophisticated engineering and beautiful art. They lived in what is now a part of the Sahara Desert in modern-day Libya. This civilisation flourished for over a thousand years, but we don't even know what they called themselves. We use the word the Greeks and Romans called them - the Garamantes. Once they farmed grapes, figs, wheat and barley, cleverly building an irrigation system that used groundwater. But climate change beat them. Once the groundwater was used up and the desert encroached, their land became useless and their civilisation fell. It was only in the 1960s that archaeologists began to excavate their ruined cities, and this work continues today. What little we know about this ancient people comes from the things they left behind: ruined buildings, a dried-up water system, their wall paintings. We have just a snapshot of a few areas of life for the Garamantes. This tantalising glimpse of a little-known civilisation will never turn into a complete picture. Gospel Teaching When we read today's Gospel reading we get a little snapshot of Jesus' teaching. It's a tiny reading, just four verses long. If we look at the words we have heard today alone we get some meaning, but it is by no means the whole picture. Fortunately we have every opportunity to look a bit wider. We have four Gospels telling us of the life of Jesus, as well as nearly two thousand years of church teaching and tradition to call upon. We are not like archaeologists scratching in the dirt for a glimpse of something wonderful from the ruins. God has made the Good News clear to us through Jesus; we can learn about it from the Bible and we can learn about it from the Church. We have many sources of information. Today's Gospel reading comes from St Matthew's Gospel and it is part of the section of Jesus' preaching that we call the Sermon on the Mount. At Mass last Sunday our Gospel came from the previous part of the Sermon on the Mount, the section we call the Beatitudes, where Jesus offers the Good News of salvation especially to those who are poor and suffering. And next Sunday we will have the next section of the Sermon on the "In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men." Mount, in which Jesus helps his listeners to deal with all the many religious laws of the time. This week's Gospel reading is, in a sense, a little interlude between those two larger sections. Today Jesus tells his listeners what to do with the Good News they have heard about in his sermon so far. He is challenging everyone who has heard or read the Gospel to take it into their lives. This includes us today. We are all encouraged to live Jesus' words in our lives. Folklorna skupina 'VENEC'_ Next practices will be on Sunday, February 20th at 2pm in St. Gregory's Hall. It is still not late to join up! Come and join the fun. Presently we have 13 couples with room for more. Otroška skupina 'SOčA'_ Practices for this energetic group have been moved to Saturdays at 12:30 [following slovenska sola]. We encourage all children, ages 7 and above, to join this worthwhile group to help nurture our Slovenian roots and help build our community here in Hamilton and surroundings. More singing and musical instruments are on the agenda. New members most welcome! Application We are used to describing good, down-to-earth people as "the salt of the earth", and this phrase comes from today's Gospel reading. Salt was a very important commodity in Jesus' time. It was so important that Roman soldiers were sometimes given salt as part of their wages. So Jesus is saying that those who follow him are important and useful.
