Since many branches have newly elected officers in addition to the forthcoming election of national officers in May, it is our duty to review important factors that will ultimately lead to well organized, harmonious and successful meetings.
Behind every successful person is a finely tuned support system.
AS A LEADER YOU WILL:
- Work harder.
- Start early in planning.
- Set goals.
- Assign responsibility.
- Measure performance.
- Evaluate performance.
- Possess ability to vision long-range goals.
- Translate goal in action.
- Set the pace.
- Initiate the action.
- Take the blame.
- Share your talents.
TIPS FOR LEADERSHIP
a. Knowledge of organization (study it, know it,
use salesmanship).
b. Condition yourself (enthusiasm determines

It has been brought to my attention that some branches have failed to pay their $ 1 yearly assessment which is due on January 1st of every year. This was a directive voted on and passed four years ago at the S.W.U. National Convention in Cleveland. Once a directive is passed we are obligated to abide by this rule — no exceptions, no excuses! It’s in the bylaws. Please cooperate and take care of this directive immediately if you have been negligent.
Continue mailing names of potential candidates who may be qualified for national office. In turn we will submit them to the Nominating Committee.
All S.W.U. branches were informed during the past four years that delegates expenses were the responsibility of each branch. There was ample time to have a few fund raising projects so that your branch would be represented. We have a responsibility to
S.W.U. to give something back to this organization. It is disheartening to expect National to do it alone. The question we may pose is, “Do we truly believe in the ideology of the Slovenian Women’s Union? Do you think our parents or grandparents would be happy knowing that your interest is minimal? How do we expect our organization to survive without 100% cooperation?”
The Scholarship Fund received considerably less in donations this past year. We urge all branches to make a yearly contribution toward this worthy endeavor. Actually we have three funds which we've consistently requested individual and branch donations, namely: Scholarship Fund, Cultural and Heritage Fund, and the ZARJA publication. Let’s forge forth with renewed dedication and generosity to the Slovenian Women’s Union of America prior to Convention ’95.
The Lenten Season begins on March 1st, Ash Wednesday, a time we center our hearts and minds in prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
The following was printed in a Twin Cities church bulletin which reveals some interesting statistics.
/ do not know if you put forth much faith in statistics, but these might interest you. We are told that 20% of all fatal accidents are caused by automobiles. Seventeen percent of all accidents happen at home. Fourteen percent of accidents occur to pedestrians. Travel by air, rail or water causes sixteen percent of accidents. But only .001 percent of fatal accidents happen at church. If there is a lesson to learn from this, it might be "Play it safe! Spend more time in church!"

Looking Back to the Future
BRANCH #13 SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
This month's feature will highlight Branch 13 which is hosting the Twenty-second SWU National Convention in San Francisco. It has been difficult researching the early history of this branch since many of the records are no longer in existence but nevertheless we would like the delegates and visitors to the convention, along with the general membership of the SWU, to become acquainted with the people and area which has been vibrant with a contageous Slovenian spirit for many years.

“THE GOLDEN STATE BRANCH”
One of the most unlikely occurrences in the history of the SWU was the founding of Branch 13, on the west coast, one year after the organization was established by Marie Prisland in the midwest. Considering the size of the United States, it took a remarkably short time for news of this women’s organization to reach “The Golden State,” as Mrs. Prisland named it.
In 1927, the midwest claimed the majority of the Slovenian-American emigrees and the greatest number of branches formed were located in that region. The west coast seemed like an eternity away and yet, the Slovene ladies of San Francisco, who may have been isolated from the greatest number of their immigrant sisters, reached out over those Rocky Mountains and wheat fields to join their sisters in one of the most challenging efforts of ethnic women to unite.
Spearheading the organization of Branch 13 was the
dynamic and charismatic, Bara Kramer, who during her active years enrolled more than 76 members in “ZVEZA,” as the SWU was called for many years by its immigrant members.
The Ameriška Slovenka publication states that the group was organized by Bara Kramer on October, 30, 1927 and was accepted into the organization on Nov. 7, 1927 at the first convention held in Chicago. The group of 21 Slovenian ladies met in Mrs. Kramer’s home on Kansas St. and became the charter members forming the first western branch of the Union. Two charter members still a part of the branch at this printing are Kate Radovich and Kate Plut.
By May of 1928, Branch 13 boasted 35 members led by Marija Sterk, the first president and Bara Kramer, the first secretary of Branch 13.

Much has been written and spoken about Bara Kramer who was a good friend of our Founder, Marie Prisland when they were both young matrons, and took the “banner of SWU” to her west coast home in San Francisco and organized one of our first branches there. On this photo, she is seen (right) with her contemporaries, Albina Novak, Josephine Schlossar, Katie Triller. Our officers have always been very stylish ladies, no? Picture is circa 1940.

TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY
Branch .13 celebrated their twentieth anniversary in 1947 with a banquet. The photo was taken of the event and shows some of the members and the officers. Standing by the head table from left to right are: Sergeant-at-arms, Frances Sankovich, Auditor, Roney Golob, Treasurer, Katarina Plut, Recording Secretary, Helen Sustarsich, Secretary, Virginia Sustarsich, President, Mary Stariha, Vice President, Kate Berezin, rediteljica, Mary Plut and auditor, Frances Chiodo.
President, Mary Stariha wrote about the event and said:
“Everyone had a wonderful time and she hoped that if a member was present and didn't see herself in the photo, that she wouldn’t feel hurt."
The following is a description of the event:
The program began with Mary Stariha, President, who welcomed the group and acknowledged every officer sitting at the head table. She wished everyone in attendance a lovely celebration. Then, Mrs. Stariha recognized Bara Kramer as the organizer of Branch 13 and continued to acclaim her hard work, love and dedication to the organization for many years for which she was given a national office.
Mrs. Kramer gratefully acknowledged President Stariha’s remarks and then continued with a history of the difficult, early founding of the branch and the slow development through the years. Then she complimented the membership on the progress of the branch and urged them to continue.
President Stariha introduced the officers and complimented the past officers who worked along with the organizer using the suggestions of the membership. She recognized the waitresses, guests and complimented all that assisted in achieving the 20th anniversary celebration. She thanked Martin Slanec, Joseph Fabian and Joseph Stariha for being present.
Mary also thanked her sister members who contributed to the banquet by arranging the tables, cooking so well and providing delicious bakery that was so satisfying to everyone. She commented that everything was really beautiful and would remain a lovely memory for everyone because they all really had such a lovely evening. At the end of the evening everyone was merry and they completed the evening with song.
SILVER ANNIVERSARY
In 1952, Branch 13 celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary with a banquet held at the Slovenian Hall.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
October 30, 1977, marked the fiftieth anniversary of Branch 13 and the members celebrated the occasion with a banquet. The host committee was comprised of Chairman, Barbara Rathbun and Co-Chairman, Beverly Jackson, assisted by Agnes Lovrin, Rose Scoff, Frances Chiodo, Virginia Sustarich, Josephine Aiuto and Anna Fabian.
Flower arrangements for the event were handled by "Flowers by Ken,” and catering by “Marian Turner Catering.” The menu consisted of: Tabic Wine, Tossed Green Salad, Half of a Roasted Chicken, String Beans Almondine, Potato du Jour, Rolls and Butter, Honey Cake and Tea, Coffee or Milk.

The Banquet Program began with a welcome from Josephine Aiuto, President of # 13 followed by an invocation by Rev. John Miholilovich, Church of the Nativity. The Pledge of Allegiance was given by Rudy Sustarich, Retired. United States Navy.

MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES
Branch 13 members have engaged in many and various activities during their 68 years in existence. Many of the records detailing the events have been lost but the members have enjoyed and arc still enjoying many of the traditional events along with a few new ones.
BOWLING was one of the activities that existed around the year 1945. Bowling records no longer exist that we could list the teams and all the bowlers but Fran Chiodo and Ginny Sustarich were two of the members that visited Golden Gate Alleys in San Francisco weekly and bowled for ZVEZA for some years.
SPRING DANCES AND WHIST PARTIES were the popular activity from 1940s to the 50s. They were held in the Slovenian Hall and Louie Jud-nich’s Orchestra was featured.
RAFFLES AND BINGO were held during the years 1945, '46 and '47 as money-making activities.
These two lower photos were taken in 1950 on the occasion of a visit to San Francisco by Albina Novak, the SWU National President.

TRAVEL took priority in July of 1961. Frances Chiodo was chairlady for the trip to Hawaii. Members from several branches met in San Francisco for a breakfast honoring National President, Marie Prisland and then the 28 members and friends were off to the beautiful island of Hawaii.
The group also participated in two trips to Reno, Nevada for the customary fun activities.
A MOTHER OF THE YEAR brunch is held every May and a selected member is honored for the annual event.
Two POT LUCK DINNERS are held each year with approximately 50 people in attendance.
The Annual Christmas Party and gift exchange brightens up the holiday activities for the members.

HAWAIIAN TOUR
The following excerpt describing the fabulous Hawaiian tour was written by Frances Chiodo and appeared in ZARJA.
"...the Hawaiian Tour was enjoyed by 2H members and friends on July I6tli, 1961... are among our fond memories... (We) enjoyed the wonderful company of our new Supreme President, Toni Tanko (Turek.) Her vibrant personality added so richly to the days spent together.
Members and friends came from cross-sections of the United States... It is impossible to put on paper the beauty and tranquility found on this enchanted island with its good, happy people... no stone is left unturned to make the tourists’ visit memorable. ”
Before departing for Hawaii on a flight via Pan Am, the group, consisting of members from all over the U.S., stopped off in San Francisco and was feted in the following manner:
After Mass at the Church of the Nativity, breakfast was served by a most efficient committee for our guests and later, a banquet send-off was given to the group by Pan Am. They displayed a banner which read, SLOVENSKA ŽENSKA ZVEZA V AMERIKA.
.. .Mrs. Prisland (founder of the SWU) was presented with a trophy by Pan Am agent, David Adler, at a luncheon in her honor.
A good time was had by all - just ask those who were lucky enough to be with us on our First Hawaiian Tour!”

TRANSPORTATION FROM AIRPORT TO SAN FRANCISCO
Transportation from San Francisco International Airport to downtown San Francisco is about a 15 mile ride. After checking with several companies, I found the best prices are:
Super Shuttle - $10.00 per person. The shuttles run every few minutes and you do not need a reservation. They also have vans which can carry 6 people. The price is $38.00 and you must make your reservation several days in advance. To make a reservation, call 415-558-8500.
Airport Commuter Limo Service - A limo which will carry up to 6 people is $45.00 and must be reserved several days in advance. To make a reservation call (415) 876-1777.
Chic Limousines - A limo which carries 6 people is $55.00 plus a 15% tip for the driver. You must make a reservation 2 days in advance. Call (415)494—3131.

CABLE CARS-“TRACK STARS”
Ever ride a National Landmark?
It’s done every
day in San Francisco, though one would hardly consider a cable car ride an everyday experience. The only vehicles of their kind in the world can be grip-provoking, even at 9-1/2 miles per hour. Just ask anyone who’s ever rounded a horseshoe curve at that clip.
Today, 37 cars operate over three lines. Power is supplied by a cable traveling at 9.5 milies per hour some 18 inches below the street. The operator pulls a lever which clamps a grip device to the cable. With the grip engaged, the car cannot exceed the speed of the cable. Three separate braking systems are used to bring the cars to a stop. Passenger capacity, seated and standing, is about 65 persons. The steepest grade is 21 % on Hyde Street between Bay and Francisco.
The fare is $3, with transfer valid for 2 hours. Two of the three cable car lines are just 2 blocks from the Canterbury Hotel. Hang on for another 100 years of joy riding!!!
GHIRARDELLI SQUARE
Although its oldest building—the Woolen Mill-dates back to 1864 (Civil War uniforms were made there), Girar-delli Square is renowned for its years as a chocolate factory. The Domingo Ghirardelli family produced chocolate here from 1893 until the early 1960s. Some of the original vats and ovens are still in operation at the Girardelli Chocolate Manufactory on the plaza level of the Clock Tower. Ghirardelli Square is a favorite spot for visitors and San Franciscans alike. In addition to fabulous views of the Bay, it boasts more than 70 shops and award-winning restaurants. Adult Continuing Education Scholarship
In honor of our branch’s 67th Anniversary, we are pleased to announce the availability of funds for members 21 and over who may be pursuing advanced or continuing education.
The award in the amount of $ 1,000, and will be granted to any qualified adult member in need of financial assistance.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. Member of SWU a minimum of 5 years, and must be 21 years or older.
2. A citizen of the United States.
3. Must be actively pursuing an advanced degree, or currently in an educational program, either in college or vocational education.
4. There must be an indication of financial need.
5. The applicant must be working toward a degree or certification, and must be making satisfactory academic progress (with GPA of C + or better).
6. The applicant may not be in default or owe a refund on a federal grant or federal education loan.
The following items need to be forwarded to the Scholarship Committee in care of Ann Dragovan (see below):
1. A letter identifying your need for the award.
2. A transcript of your most recent semester grades (if applicable) from the institution you are attending.
3. A current, signed Federal Tax Return.

The Slovenian Women’s Union, Br. 20 is pleased to announce the availability of a high school Scholarship for academically qualified eighth grade students who wish to attend a Catholic high school. The Scholarship, in the amount of $500, will be awarded to applicants who meet the following criteria:
1. Must be a current 8th grade student and must be a member of Br. 20 for two lull years.
2. Applicant must have been accepted at one of the Catholic high schools, and be enrolled for the fall semester.
3. Scholastic ability must be proven. A written recommendation from the school principal or eighth grade teacher should include an estimate of the applicant’s ability to perform and complete high school work. Recommendation must also include an evaluation of applicant’s character and code of behavior.
4. A statement from the applicant outlining his or her individual or family membership in Br. 20, plus an overview of involvement in branch activities. This statement must be forwarded to the branch president for signature.

January meeting theme was: “Ringing in the New Year 1995”; with pretty party favors filled with popcorn and pretzels. We had a nice turnout in spite of the cold and snowy night and all the virus and flu going around our area.
We honored 3 members who celebrated their 50th Anniversaries as members of SWU. The members are: Dorothy Gradishar, Frances Schultz and Mildred Zalokar.
We are sorry to report that our Hag was draped for three members who were called to their Eternal Home. Our condolences to the families of Mary Koscak, Justina Holozan and Carmi Toplak. Please remember them in your prayers that they will rest in peace.
We had the installation of our officers for the 1995 year.
Convention to San Francisco. Marie Ovnik is handling all the transportation. If anyone is interested in going, please contact Fran Morison as soon as possible. We should have a real good time. Articles are needed for the booth, also chances are being sold for the Slovenian dolls.
Chance books were purchased for the Altar Society Bunco - March 26, at the Gym Hall, doors will open 1:30.
Remember: March 9 - St. Joseph’s Table - start thinking about what you will bring. Please try to attend, we always have an enjoyable evening.

At our meeting January I, new officers for 1995 were installed by Helen Skull and a tribute and token of appreciation was given to the outgoing officers. Mary Tekavec, President, was not present.
A successful year is wished for our new officers who are as follows: President - Margaret Cullen, Vice President
-	Mary (Mitzi) Drobnick, Recording Secretary - Mary (Mitzi) Drobnick and Financial Secretary - Eileen Kaplan.
We commend our outgoing officers for a job well done and serving so faithfully. They are: President - Mary Tekavec, Vice President - Rheta Minton, Recording Secretary - Angela Meglen and Financial Secretary - Frances Simonich. Frances is unable to hold an office due to her health and she deserves special recognition for all the years of hard work she has put into the office she held. We hope she will be able to continue to attend meetings.
Those reported on the sick list are Frances Ondovchik and Eileen Boitz. They arc both recuperating, Frances at her home and Eileen at the Life Care Center.
After reports were given and approved, the drawing was held for the mystery gift which was donated by Katherine Kochcvar and won by Helen Galich.
Refreshments were served by hostesses Angela Mikatich and Katherine
Kochevar and then "B" was played.
On a happy note, we would like to congratulate Louis and Lorine Zobeck on their 60th wedding anniversary and two couples observing their 50th, namely, Elsie and Fred Masscr and Emma and Edward Novak.
A fund raiser for Shauna Kocman, daughter of Joseph and Pam Kocman, who will be traveling with the “Up With People” group for a year, was held at St. Mary’s Church hall January 23. A Slovenian menu was featured and enjoyed by a large crowd. There was also entertainment by Joe Cortese and Rich Eurich, accordianists, and the Tam-buritza group. The ladies who prepared the food, many who are members of our lodge, spearheaded by Elsie Kocman, Shauna’s grandmother, did an excellent job of not only preparing the food but serving it in excellent fashion.
Once again, St. Mary’s Church’s spaghetti dinner and bake sale was held on February 26. We asked all members to support this project because it benefits our church. Without the wonderful input by volunteers, projects like this wouldn’t be as successful as they are.
Get well wishes are extended to Sister Gregory Rohar, OSB and others who are ill. Also, remember those who are homcbound or in nursing homes in your prayers.
Just a reminder - our meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month, except the summer months, at 1:00 p.m. Please make an effort to attend.

Our Mother of the Year event will be on April 26th at the Collinwood Slovenian Hall at I p.m. It has been changed due to the Convention in May.
The Slovenian Home for the Aged will be visited by our member. Fay Moro before the Easter Holiday. Theresa Dagg will be our representative for the Collinwood Slovenian Home Annual Stockholders’ meeting and will present our annual donation to the Hall.
The SWU cookbooks are still available. They arc great gifts. Discussed also was our annual Christmas party to be held this year in November - date not yet set. More on all this later. Meeting was adjourned.
Refreshments were served; thanks to the ladies who baked and help to serve. We also enjoyed a raffle.

I	hope you all enjoyed the holidays. We were looking forward to our meeting in January, but old man winter took care of that. Stavia called off the meeting in the morning due to snow and ice and some of us got on the phone to help notify the members. Our big concern was informing those members from Br. 17 who planned to transfer to our branch. We know that our State Pres. Joan Jaklich did some calling, too.
One member who was planning to join us was Catherine Matzelle, but recently, she landed in the hospital and had to have a heart by-pass. We wish her well. Catherine and I go back to the time when our folks visited each other and we kids traipsed along. No
baby sitters at that time. So, hurry and get well, Catherine.
Another long-time member and supporter, Connie Dobersek is now at Silver Spring Convalescent Center, 1300 W. Silver Spring Dr., Milwaukee, 53209. Connie was very generous to our branch. Cards would be nice to send her and most appreciated. Every once in a while, a card to a shut-in member is most welcome.
Congratulations to branch 43 on their new officers. They will gain some new members from Br. 17 and so will we. We will wait until the February meeting to sec our new members. Phylis was all ready with our meal so everything was put into the freezer. And, I was looking forward to the chop suey.
Come to the meetings with your ideas and make things interesting. Not having a meeting for a couple of months, I may have missed some news, but I’ll catch up next time.

We started our New Year with a bag lunch meeting and we had 11 members present. We made our schedule for the year and we will have another fun and productive year. We are all very excited about the Convention and the exciting plans our Convention Chairman, Barbara Chiodo has planned for us. Wonderful trips, terrific parties, lots of gifts and prizes and hopefully a most successful convention meeting. By the wonderful information in ZARJA, you can sec she has been working around the clock.
We will have our annual Luncheon in March and you may bring a guest but please let Josephine know. I know we have had a cold and rainy (understatement) Winter and we haven’t seen many of our members. We miss you and please join us now that the sun is shining. It has been a dreadful and destructive time in California and here’s hoping Spring will bring new joy.
Josephine Aiuto has some wonderful bustrips planned this year, among them, our Valentine Party in February.

Marge Prebil spent a few days in No. Dakota. Helen Milanovich was overjoyed to have her son. Chuck spend a week with her over the Christmas holidays.
Delegate to the National Convention is Vida Kumse and alternate is Gladys Buck. They have never been to California, so they are looking forward to our trip there in May. We hope to have a nice group from the east side.
Bernice Jarkovich had the misfortune of falling and breaking her right shoulder. She is recuperating at the home of her daughter.
Gloria Serapin had out-patient surgery and her husband, Tony had heel surgery. They were elated when grandson, Dannie Serapin brought home a Report Card with all A’s!
Katie Marie Bittner, who was 2 years old in February, has a new baby sister. Her name is Kristin Lynn and she was born on Dec. 30th, 1994. The proud parents are Sandi and Bruce Bittner; maternal grandparents are Joe and Edna Winters and paternal grandparents are Mike and Marian Bittner. Best wishes to the family.
The Fall Commencement at Polk Community College in Winter Haven, Florida took place in December and in the procession of graduates was Corinne Winters of Lakeland, FL. She received an Associate in Arts degree. In the audience snapping pictures was her delighted and proud husband, Allen. A reception was held after the ceremony for graduates and guests. They also have an addition to the family recently - a Great Dane puppy named Einstein!

The Br.’s contribution to St. Joseph Church was dwarfed by the surprise gift ol $5000 to the school from Cheryl Skelly, mother of our choir director, Pat Skelly. This represents a one-half share of her charity award in a regional food contest sponsored by Paul Newman’s Own and Good Housekeeping. Easter Seals received a like amount. Cheryl and her husband also enjoyed an all-expense trip to New York to have lunch with Paul Newman in the famous Rainbow Room. The winning recipe? Santa Fe Chicken and Potato Salad. Cheryl has an enviable record in winning such contests. Since 1989 she has won the grand prize in the Kankakee Daily Journal contest, came in second

Mr. and Mrs. William Kobe, Sr., of Crest Hill, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on February 18, 1995. Bill and Anna (Chepuran) were married at St. Mary Nativity Church in Joliet by Fr. Violich on February 18, 1925.
Anna is a member of Branch 20 in Joliet as is her daughter, Lil Papesh of Venice, FL, her son and daugh-ter-in-law, Bill and Charlene Kobe, granddaughter, Jeanne Warsaw and great grandchildren Nicole Irwin and Max Welsh.
The couple also have live other granddaughters and four other great grandchildren, and son-in-law, Mike Papesh.

Our Pres. Mollie McIntyre reports a ‘houseful’ over the Christmas Holidays. Among the guests and escaping the rains in California were granddaughter Lynn and husband John and great grands Alex and Erica. The first time the children had a chance to frolic in snow; out west they traveled once four hours away to view from afar the white stuff on a mountaintop. Mollie herself is an example of careful-does-it in taking medication. Having taken two different pills at the same time, she suffered blackouts and landed in the hospital for three days. Not all pills are friends of another! Gratefully, Mollie is here to tell the tale.
Your prayers are earnestly requested for Joe Znidarsich, son of member Emma of LaCrosse, WI. In a45-ft. fall from a scaffold Joe sustained severe injuries to head, pelvis, spine, etc. “That’s how I started the New Year”, Emma writes. For that and other reasons one would like to skip Jan. ’95. Our brother Joe had a stroke and cousin Barbara Schiltz Billadeau passed away following carotid surgery. Barbara was also a first cousin to Helen Sebastiani, but death was no stranger to Helen, having lost her husband Joe just before Christmas. Our condolences to Helen and family; also to member Mayme
Drassler and sisters upon the death of their brother Louie. Both men endured long illnesses and were released from them, to spend Christmas in Heaven. In the light of faith, these losses arc a brief separation.
Br. 22 has been hibernating this winter, each busy with family happenings, wary of winter’s harshness, or just giving in to problems of aging. Let’s say we’re getting ready to celebrate in honor of St. Patrick and St. Joseph, two great men in our lives. We women need their support!
Happy Springtime, as you plow a few furrows, plant a few seeds, and wait for the rains. Hope springs eternal! How great is our God for the miracle of new life each year. May the same God bless all ZARJA readers!

As I write this we are enjoying a beautiful sunny day with a forty degree temperature and more people seem to be up and about taking advantage of the weather. We can’t complain, since we didn’t have a great deal of snow this winter in our area, a disappointment for the youngsters with new Christmas sleds. On the other hand, the adults are quite satisfied with the milder weather. We have another month of winter ahead and by the time you read this the Lenten season will have begun. This would be a good time to thank God for the blessings we have been given with this mild winter. It seems hardly a day goes by and there is news
of another disaster, earthquakes, Hoods and terrible storms.
Our Vice President, Minnie Carter has a new great granddaughter. The little one arrived on Christmas Day. Her parents are Minnie’s granddaughter, Cathy Raiter and her husband, Darren. Congratulations to all.
Our March birthday girls are: Junior member, Josephine Pohar Brady who will celebrate her first birthday, Terese Kinczewski, Mary Gertrude Piletič, Mary Hewitt and Terese Hollerich. Best wishes for a Happy Day and many more to follow.
There isn’t much news when we don’t have meetings. I do know that Doris Hallett had been hospitalized in December and has had to stay off her feet and take it easy for awhile. Also reports of a lot of flu and bad colds. 1 hope everyone is feeling better and you’ll be ready to join us at our first meeting of 1995. Allow me to introduce the three Kotnik members. Here is what they are doing. Susan is in Birmingham working with computers and studying to “take over” the credit department. Joyce is going to college in Toledo. She is taking communications and television. Kristin is way down south, at Cincinnati University studying business and accounting. She also plays flute and is a member of the university orchestra. Fran Kotnik, their grandma, is our member and auditor. She is very proud of her granddaughters as is grandpa, Adolph. Hooray for the Kolnik clan!
May your hearts be filled with joy, happiness, the sun shine on all your paths and everything be bright and sweet through the year. Our newest Br. 26 member, Madeleine Marie Burk and her mother, Carol are pictured while on vacation last summer near Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina. Maddie’s grandma, Marie Marta has been our good member, too, for over 20 years, and hers is a lovely family!

Hopefully, spring is around the corner. Looking through the window today at the blustery scene, I had to use this word. Whenever you have a weather station on the radio, this is the way they describe a “snowy” dance. I could see half open pussywillows and yes, snowdrops, peering out through the snow. Their spear-shaped green leaves are their traitors, otherwise, it would be hard to find them in the blanket of snow on the ground. Hope, hope, that is our lifelong “picker-upper” for anything and everything!

This month, we'd like to welcome a new member to Branch 30. Lisa Marie Godina of Port Townsend, WA joined the SWU in November, 1994. She is 23 years old and is already an office manager. Lisa Marie is interested in genealogy and is presently researching information about her grandparents who came from the small Slovenian town of Hrpelje, near Trieste, according to her grandfather’s naturalization papers.
The naturalization papers were signed by witness, John Rasenovech, and this led her to discover that her grandmother once lived in Cleveland with the Rasenovech family. If anyone in the Cleveland area has information about the Godina family or the Rasenovech family. I’m sure Lisa Marie would be very happy to hear from them. You can write to the SWU office in Chicago and they will forward the letter to her. Welcome to the SWU, Lisa Marie!
Joseph Smertneck of Williamsport, PA is in our “spotlight” in March. He is 71 years young, and has been retired from teaching for several years. He says he is still married to the same girl, “an unusual event in the modern world.” Joseph and his wife are the proud parents of a daughter with two grandchildren, a young “second generation” son who is a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a mechanical engineer, and a deceased son who departed in 1971, at the age of 14, due to an accident.
Some of Joseph’s interests include travel, reading, hacking on his computer, ham radio, arguing about politics and keeping busy helping neighbors when they need an extra hand. He also watches over three aunts of his wife’s who are ages 92, 91, and 76. They are becoming weak and infirm, and he says, "I am happy we have the gift of good health to tend to them.”
Joseph hopes to visit Slovenia some day. He read an article in a national ham radio magazine about a couple who went to Slovenia and raved about the beautiful country and the friendly people. Finally, he says, “My wife, Patty, likes the recipes in ZARJA and has tried several of them. YUM! YUM!

My kids named it junk when they didn’t know what it was, but they loved it. It is always, ‘where’s the pink junk?’; and POTICA CAKE, originally from Minnesota. A dear friend (may she rest in peace) got it from her in-laws in that state. It was so delicious the first time 1 made it, I continue to use it.”

CREAMY TURKEY CHOWDER
Turkey carcass
2	quarts water
1	teaspoon Accent/ navor enchancer
!/2	teaspoon salt
3	sprigs parsley
2	stalks celery with leaves
2	medium onions, sliced
1	bay leaf
1	chicken bouillon cube
l,i	teaspoon dried
leaf thyme
4	carrots, pared and sliced
%	cup uncooked rice
1	can (15'^ ounces)
cream style corn Remove meat from carcass and reserve. Break up carcass and place in a large, deep kettle. Add water, flavor enhancer, salt, parsley, celery, onions, bay leaf, bouillon cube and thyme. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer one (I) hour. Strain stock and return to kettle. Add carrots and rice. Cover and cook 20 minutes or until rice is tender. Add corn and reserved turkey. Heat. Makes 8 servings.
(A make ahead salad	or dessert: serves 16-20 people).

cheese, room temperature	whipped
Line a loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches or a I2x3-inch pan or 3 smaller pans with aluminum foil, leaving about one and one-half inches overhang on all sides. Salad/dessert can then be lifted out of pans when frozen by pulling on the foil extensions.
Drain fruit cocktail. Measure syrup and add water needed to make ONE cup. Bring liquid to a boil, add gelalin and stir until it melts. Chill until mixture becomes thick and syrupy. Beat crcam cheese; add salad dressing and beat until free of lumps. Add chilled gelatin. Fold in nuts, fruits and marshmallows; then fold in whipped cream. Spoon into pans. Any leftover mixture is spooned into another container. Cover	with	foil and freeze, (foil at	ends of pans may also be extended	six	inches,
then folded	back to form a cover).	Frozen junk can be wrapped in aluminum	foil
and stored in freezer. Remove from freezer about 15 minutes before serving - slice.
POTICA CAKE
1	cupoleo	’’a	teaspoon salt
2 packages dry yeast	2	tablespoons sugar
U	cup lukewarm water	l'i	cup milk
2 l;2 cups flour, sifted	3	egg yolks
Melt and cool oleo. Mix yeast in water and set aside. In large bowl sift flour, salt and sugar. Add milk to oleo; stir in egg yolks. Add milk mixture and yeast to flour. Beat well with an electric mixer or wooden spoon until smooth (dough will be very soft but not sticky. Do not add flour). Cover and refrigerate overnight. Refrigerate egg whites. Next day, divide dough in half (right from refrigerator) and roll it out on floured cloth to about 10 inches. Flip over, then lightly flour surface and	continue rolling to a 20-inch	square.	Spread	with 1/2 filling.	Roll	up like	a jelly
roll,	start first inch with fingers then raise cloth to continue rolling.	Place in ungreased
angel food pan overlapping ends. Repeat with second half of dough, place it on top of first roll, seam down, with largest part over lapped edges. Bake one hour, 5 minutes in 350° oven on lowest oven rack. ENJOY!

Mix first five ingredients and heat until a paste is formed, stirring constantly. Cool. Add egg whites that are beaten until foamy, then add I cup sugar gradually until stiff peaks form. Spread over dough.

The Slovenia Weekly newspaper announced that President Kučan received a letter from Pope John Paul II stating that he will be glad to accept the President’s invitation to visit Slovenia. The visit is scheduled for either May or June of 1996.

The American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island is in the final stage of registration. Since the registration began and the wall opened in
1988, 480,000 names have been registered at this national monument. The 652 foot long doublesided, semi-circular wall is engraved with names representing virtually every nationality from every inhabited continent on the face of the earth.
Speaking as one who had registered her parents names, it was an exciting experience to travel to Ellis Island in
1989, and find the names of Martin and Emma Planinšek engraved on the Wall of Honor. Our immigrant parents and ancestors may no longer be with us but their legacy lives on in a national memorial in their honor. Consider this opportunity! Don’t wait any longer.

EMMA PLANINŠEK
April 2, 1899 - March 26, 1990
A dedicated and effective president of Br. 20, Joliet, IL, she served her beloved members for 47 years.
Details of her early life as an immigrant woman have been detailed in the book. Footsteps Through Time, available from the SWU Home Office, 431 N. Chicago St., Joliet, IL 60432.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF ANTONIA DOLINAR A Member for 63 years
Mrs. Dolinar passed away December 3, 1994. She was born on January 16, 1896 to Gregor and Mary Kebe in Cerknica,' Slovenia. In 1913, she came to Davis, W.VA. under the sponsorship of Mr. & Mrs. Andy Yankovic (Frank’s parents) to work in a lumber camp. After two years, she decided to come to Cleveland where her two sisters lived, in the St. Clair area. There she met John Dolinar, a carpenter. They were married on September 15, 1916 and had a son, John, twins, Anton and Frances, all deceased, and a daughter, Jo (Watters). In 1922, husband John built a new home in the outskirts of Cleveland near Gar. Hgts. Antonia was very homesick for her sisters and the Slovenian neighborhood on St. Clair Ave., so when John bought a 1924 Model A Ford, she decided to learn how to drive, which she did, and kept driving until the age of 89!
Through the years, more Slovenians moved into the “new” neighborhood and in 1931, her good friend and neighbor, Helen Tomazic, approached her about helping to form a branch ol S.Z.Z. Since Antonia could drive, and had a car, they went from house to house, signing up ladies from this large area. Soon they had 101 new members and called the first meeting of “Branch 47”. Antonia was the first treasurer and remained so for over 40 years. Also, at the same time, she was treasurer of Naš Dom, #50 SDZ. Later in life she was a member of the Newburgh and Maple Hts., Pensioners club.
Antonia’s husband of 65 years passed away in 1982 and Antonia continued to live in the home he built for her until 1991 when her health began to fail at age 95. She then went to live with her daughter (yours truly) until June of 1992 when she moved to the Jennings Hall Nursing Home where she passed away in December.
Throughout her life, Antonia enjoyed her lodge activities and visiting her friends... until there were none left, she outlived them all.
May her dear soul rest in peace.

Our meeting at one o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, January 18, as a busy one—busy meaning full of business, activity, etc. First on the agenda was the installation of officers, with the privilege of having our National President, Victoria Bobcnce, as Installing Officer. Officers are: Adeline Mustonen, Pres., Agnes Mattson, Vice Pres., Agnes Mesojedec, Sec.-Treas., Emma Betourne, Rec. Sec., Auditors, Angela Tekautz and Mary Gornick. I thank the officers who responded so well when asked to serve.
Our books were audited by Angela Tekautz and Mary Gornick and found to be in good order; thanks to Tory for taking over when Molly Wilson died. Our branch is very grateful to Tory for the times she has taken over the books when our treasurers have died, first it was Mary Pahula, then Mary Vollen-dorf and last was Molly Wilson. Thank you, Tory, for a job well done! Again our branch donated to MN Citizens Concerned for Life to help out trying to bring an end to abortion.
We are happy to name Lucille Svatos as our Mother of the Year for 1995. We will honor heron May 3, congratulations, Lucille!
National Convention plans were discussed and we are hoping that a delegate will be named, it promises to be a wonderful time for all who will attend.
Lucille Svatos and Angeline Morin were hostesses for our January meeting, Angeline is visiting her granddaughter in the state of Washington, so Mary Gornick helped Lucille out. Mary, by the way, had just celebrated her 89th birthday on January 17 — we sang Happy Birthday to her, she is just as alert and spry as ever — keep it up, Mary! Winners at the meeting were Helen Adkisson, Angela Tekautz, Kay Dean and Emma Betourne. The door prize was brought by Helen Adkisson and won by Tory Bobence. It seemed like no one wanted to leave that afternoon, the ladies seemed to be enjoying the afternoon, visiting with one another.
The February meeting hostesses were Sophie Zupanich and Marge Skala, with Lorraine Berg furnishing the door prize.
Our winter this year has been something else — wonderful, compared to the bitter cold of last year. We can look for spri ng soon! My best to al 1 of you.

We haven’t had a meeting since December so this will be a shorter report. We are still enjoying a mild winter with little snow. Mother Nature did come through with a generous snowfall for the annual Pepsi Challenge ski race. This was held on Jan. 28th with 835 skiiers, young and old, from near and far. The race started in Biwabik, on to our snow covered Main St. in Aurora, and then off to Giant’s Ridge ski area. What a colorful sight to see!
Twenty-seven people from Minnesota (including a few husbands) have made plans to attend the National SWU Convention in San Francisco in May. We are looking forward to a productive convention.
Welcome to our new member, Jennie M. Urick, daughter of Martin and Diane and granddaughter of Barbara Urick.
Congratulations to Daniel and Heide Furry who became parents on Christmas Day to a boy, Joseph Charles. Joseph will get a lot of TLC from his four sisters and grandparents, Joseph and Ria Bradach.
Our sympathy and prayers are with Helen Zuponcic who lost her husband, Herman and to all his family.
To Roy and Jean Korsman. who lost their daughter, Jeanne in a car accident and to all her family.
To Ann Mismash who lost her cousin, Diane Phillips. May they all rest in peace.

Getting Acquainted...
Our grandson, James Wheeler is a 7th grader at Minnetonka Middle School-East and among his classes is Chinese language. This year, his class had the opportunity to have a Chinese exchange teacher visit and share many aspects of Chinese culture and art with the students. We know that James found it fascinating. Miss Shang Xiaomin said she liked America especially because the U.S. system of education emphasizes the individual student and his/her interests and capabilities. “In China, parents do too much for the child, give too much care. The child is dependent on the parents”, she said. She describes the American home and school as being places where every child is taught to be independent and the parents respect the child’s decisions.
James already has two pen pals in China and someday, he says, he will visit them himself!

With January behind us — can spring be far away? We have been blessed with a wonderfully mild winter here in the north woods. My Christmas gift of an amaryllis is just now in full bloom. It makes me smile!
The first meeting of Br. 38 for 1995 was held on February 1st in the Slovenian Home. Twenty two members were in attendance. The prayer for the installation of the new officers was read by Helen Kochevar. The officers arc; President: Charlotte Laurich, Vice Pres: Jennie Briski, Sec’y/Treas: Kathleen Knuth, Rec. Sec’y: Gcrt Zakrajšek, Auditors: Rose Niemi and Rose Faras.
A bake sale and luncheon is being planned for March 23rd. Jennie Samsa is again in charge. She does a great job and we are most thankful for her enthusiasm and guidance. We are aiming for another huge success. Our delegate to the national convention in California will be our own president, Charlotte Laurich. She reported on her plans and about the amazing “deal” she made concerning the air flight price. It is evident she is off to a great beginning.
Fran Zalcc dressed and donated a beautiful doll for Charlotte to take to the convention—for the craft table. We thank you for your generosity Fran!
We closed our meeting with a fruit salad and coffee served by the officers. Our birthday sisters for Jan. and Feb. were: Fran Zalec, Josie Zupancich, Rose Sterle, Jessie Pustovar, Florence Frickman and Helen Kochevar. Drawings were won by Lucy Namisnick, Rose Faras and Marie Newman.

Branch 39, Biwabik always has a great Christmas party, and even though it wasn't held until Jan. 8 this year we definitely had a great time. Our parish priest, Father Brian Schultz was basking in the sun on an Arizona vacation, so our Deacon, Herb Riley invited Father Perkovich to our dinner. We enjoyed having him and 1 think he enjoyed our delicious “Prime Rib" dinner. Dennis Purkat, son of our Sec.-Treas., Jane Purkat catered the excellent meal. (One of the ovens wasn’t working properly so we had to resort to using the kitchen micro-wave, and also one from father’s kitchen, to get the potatoes baked!!!) We all enjoyed a glass of wine and were only delayed about a half hour.
The ladies were delighted with the beautiful table arrangements and decorations done for us by Eine Karish, a long-time social member who always contributes to our gatherings. I neglected to thank her at the dinner so I’m happy to do so now. We have many members who offer their services during the year, making our meetings and these occasions so special. Thanks also, to the newly re-elected officers. Angeline (Toots) Hietala our recording secretary is a “Craft” person and presented each member and guest with a plastic yarn Stained Glass window. Jane Purkat and 1 brought the dessert: a decorated sheet cake wishing all a Happy New Year, and ice-cream sundae cups.

Who are the greatest? Why, our members, of course! Specifically, the greatest are members of our Chicago and Joliet branches who came to our aid and helped count and band the note-cards and stuff 6,000 envelopes that you have now received as our ZARJA fund-raiser! It took several full days of work at the Croatian Franciscan Press printery by these members who voluntarily gave time and effort to the project. Not only that, they even brought the most delicious pastries as treats for coffee-time! On these two photos are some of the workers.

As you can see, the work was done in a very work-like atmosphere among the various machinery at the printery.
THE GREATEST!
After dinner a short meeting was held. President Korsman reported that 26 people from Minnesota will be traveling to San Francisco in May, and that a special fare was available up to Jan. 13. Now we are waiting for more information on the hotel, and busily planning for the “tours”. The big news at our meeting was an article read about our Junior member Jaime Siskar, (daughter of Vice President Kathy Siskar and granddaughter of our long-time member, Fran Siskar). Jaime was selected to attend a National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. (sec article enclosed). Jaime has been a source of pride to all of us with her participation in our activities. Members voted to give Jaime $100 to help with her expenses, which will be considerable for 5 days in Washington, plus meals hotel and air-fare. Congratulations, Jaime! Grandmother, Fran enrolled six new members and brought her daughter, Mary Cossalter to get acquainted at the party. Denise Erchul, another new member was also present, and it was great to welcome them.
Following the meeting the group played their usual Dice game for a table full of wrapped gifts, then for 15 long minutes we “stole” from each other’s piles. The ladies really get wild and have a hilarious time. The only change this year was that we put the “loot” on a table so we wouldn’t have to bend down!!!!
Our Feb. 5th meeting was planned to be a busy one as we were to select a chairperson and committees for our Minnesota State Convention in Sept. We are hoping ALL our members will take an active part, as we will need all the ideas and help we can get.

Jaime Siskar Chosen to attend conference
Miss Jaime Siskar, member of Br. 39, Biwabik, MN was selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in January in Washington, D.C. The National Young Leaders Conference is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Jaime, a Junior at Mesabi East High School was among 350 outstanding National Scholars attending the conference from across America.
The theme of the National Young Leaders Conference was “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of
Today.” Throughout the six day conference, Jaime interacted with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps.
“The conference provides the opportunity for students,like Jaime, to distinguish themselves as tomorrow’s leaders,” said John Hines, Council Executive Director. “Scholars not only gain knowledge and experience in the nation’s capital, they leave with a sense of accomplishment and an increased ability to face the challenges of the future.”
We wish a Happy Birthday to Agnes Serazin, Lee Pavlovčič, Sophie Pogachar and Sue Tomazic. They were the hostesses at our January 11 th meeting and surprised us with a full lunch instead of just dessert. They served us barley soup, home-made bread and cookies for dessert. Thanks girls, every thing was delicious and the soup hit the spot.
Eighteen came to our Jan. meeting. Mary Ferlic was the winner of the door prize. Agnes, our Pres., presided at the meeting and opened it with prayer.
We tried to elect new officers but, as usual, there were no takers. So, here we are again.

We discussed the national convention to be held in San Francisco in May. Angie Voytko will be our delegate and Rose Jancar is alternate.
We sent get-well cards to Angie Martin, Milo Uehein and Emma Matos. Angie is in the Autumn Ages Rest Home and Emma is in the Lorain Manor Nursing Home.
Annette and Sam Septaric celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Jan. 29th. They are the parents of 2 sons and have 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. We wish, them many more years of health and happiness.

Hello ladies!
Just a bit of past news. Mary Lou Prhne spent the holidays in California with her sister in law; Betty Ann Kastelic came into Cleveland from Silver Spring, MD, and Marge Church enjoyed the holiday in Michigan.
Christmas party was grand and the raffle was a great success! Awards went to: 1st Louise Toth (Savings Bond), 2nd Dorothy Zidar (Afghan made by M. Zupančič), 3rd Donna Wilk, (Afghan made by D. Zidar) 4th Ludmilla Tacsar (Afghan made by A. Zupančič) 5th Emily Gruden (Savings Bond), 6th Jennie Intihar (Gift Certificate donated by M. Tome), 7th Ralph Godec (Ceramic Pitcher donated by M. Champa) 8th Louise Toth (Christmas Plate donated by J. Gruden). 1 ourteen years ago, during my first battle with ovarian cancer, I wrote the above Bible verse on a slip of paper and put it in my New Testament. Just recently, in the midst of my latest battle with recurrent cancer, I found that slip of paper still there waiting for me. Reminiscent of fourteen years ago, / have once again experienced the truth of that verse. Knowing that He is with me through it all has given me some sense of peace or acceptance when confronting a very uncertain future for myself and my family and while undergoing the physical and emotional trials of chemotherapy and surgery. God has shown me that He is with me through the St. Michael parish family. The day before starting my chemotherapy treatments and again before undergoing critical tests, I felt comforted when Father Wilmoth administered the Anointing of the Sick. When I was crying at the thought of not being there for my children, I was consoled by Mrs. McGovern who listened to me and gave me a hug. For one week every month when I was incapacitated due to the side effects of chemotherapy, teachers and classmates at St. Michael’s treated my daughters with understanding and parents gave my daughters rides and cared for them in their homes. When 1 was at my physical and emotional low, I was given both physical and emotional strength just by thinking of all the people who were praying for me. Even now, as I await more surgery in a few days, I know He is telling me to not be afraid - He will be with me.
LJear Lord, thank you for all the people who have brought your peace and comfort to me and to my family. I know I have been very absorbed with my own health and family problems as of late. Please help me to be more aware of the needs of others so that through my actions and words others will come to know that they need not fear - You are always there with them.

A wonderful luncheon was served by our Birthday Girls, Mary Musich, Marie Wiher, Shirley Schulta and Jo Zahn. Thank you, gals, we certainly enjoyed it.
We will be represented at the convention in San Francisco by our member, Arleen Fritz. Here’s hoping this trip will be both educational and enjoyable for you.
In May we usually set aside one day to honor a Member of the Year. But this year we had two functions which were a complete success because of the hard work by all of our members. May 24th will be a special day for all of our members. Details of the time and place for this luncheon will be in the next issue of ZARJA.
We wish a speedy recovery to Frances Widemsek, Anne Rebernisek and Stella Poushc. Hurry and get well, we want to see at our meetings. We also have some members who attended our meetings but now due to various reasons are unable to do so, Jean Luzar, Josephine Verbick, Anne Hiller, and Mary Strazishar. I am sure that they would appreciate getting a card or call, letting them know that they are not forgotten.
On a sadder note, two of our members were called to their heavenly home. Mary Pugel, and Lucille Ganzel. We wish to express our deepest sympathy to each of their families and friends.
Our meeting was scheduled for February 22nd, on George Washington’s Birthday, at the usual time, but the meeting was at St. John’s the Evangelist Church, Gold Room at 84th and Coldspring Road. We were hoping for another good attendance.

Branch 20, Joliet, IL can verify the artistic talent of Ms. Lillian Bride as her art work has been enjoyed throughout the Slovenian community for many years. The entire membership can now delight in the poetry of this accomplished American-Slovene woman for she promises to keep our column filled. Lil writes, “...if you like them, I do have some for every season."
Her second submission which we have received from Li! is entitled, “School Days," and I'm sure many ZARJA readers will sit back and recall a cold journey home from school after reading her poem. Having attended the same parochial grade school as Lil, / can readily do the same and can practically visualize the route which she may have followed on her way home. Isn’t that what poetry is about? We can walk in the footsteps of the poet and enjoy, as he or she did, the many adventures and experiences, or the emotions and pleasures which excited the mind and heart.

I am sure that you know by now that I have resigned as secretary of Br. 43, Milwaukee, on Nov. 30, 1994. Why I did not wait until the end of December was to give the president one month time to prepare the statements (for dues), for 1995 and mail them out so the members would receive them in the first week of January, 1995. Here we are at the end of January, 1995 and this was not done.
We have lost two members. Mary Pugel died in December while in Florida. She was a 30 year member of our branch. Louise Ganzel also has passed away. Our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of our departed members.
Frances Widemsek will have to be off her feet for three months. She hurt her knees. Fran, we wish you speedy and complete recovery and 1 hope that by Easter you will be as good as new. Love you.
Mrs. Anne Rebernisek is also not feeling well. Our prayers are with you, Anne. Her sister, Mary Tutin of Pittsburgh, PA is doing well after her heart surgery. Thank you for your nice letter, also to Josephine Peterson of Manistique, MI. It was nice to hear from you again. God bless you. A big thank you to Jaque Nook who also sent me two nice Christmas cards including a picture of her beautiful mom, Pauline Plesko and her two grandsons. Mrs. Plesko is one of our oldest members (64 years with Zveza) and resides in St. Camilus Health Center. She received or was awarded the “Faith in Action” award there... truly a beautiful lady. God bless you and keep you many more years among your loved ones.
Two years have gone by since our beloved secretary. Rose Kraemer passed away. She was one of a kind. Zveza was her life. She always said: I will keep this job till 1 die, and she did. She was a leader - organizer and the backbone of this branch for 37 years. May the good Lord reward her for all she has done for us. This branch member misses her very much.

Now that the Holidays are over and the days are getting longer we know that spring will soon be here. After being at rest all winter we will soon see the first robins, the crocus and daffodils peeking through the ground.
Yearly meeting, Christmas Party and Pot Luck dinner was well-attended. Our weather man cooperated in our favor. Thanks to our faithful ladies who brought their special hot dishes. Yours truly prepared the Oh, so, good Roast Beef, and much more, not to mention, all. Thanks to the ladies for groceries to fill baskets and door prizes for rafll-ing. Olga Dorchak donated several beautiful poinsettias to decorate our tables which were also raffled off.

Dober Dan! It’s March already! Still, the colors of Christmas reign. February had its red for Valentine’s Day and March, the wearing of the green. To me. New Year’s Day should be March 1 st with the hope of new life and spring, not as it is in the depth of winter. We have been misled by the Romans.
Our 1995 meetings have been well-attended. It has been good to see you there. It was a pleasure to observe the interest and to see so many faces that have been absent. It is a good way to start the year. Keep it up.
Several others who were absent have had good reasons. Our sick list is lengthening, the following haven't been well, but we hope they have recuperated by now. Besides those previously mentioned, we regret to add Jo Smith, Sharon Mramor, Mary Maxim, Jennie Kokotek, Mamie Marin, Mary Kuchner, and Jane Somrak. This list is much too long and depressing. Members keep in touch with our not so well lodge sisters and encourage them to return to the fold as soon as possible.
It was nice to see Justine Pieman, who had a hip replacement recently, and we wish to thank her for her generous donation. Just keep showing off that new hip Justine.
Carol Matetic’s beloved mother Ann Dolenc passed away recently. Frances Kolenc sadly also left us. Their passing is regretfully remembered. At this time, we also wish to thank Jane Novak for her generous donation to the scholarship fund in memory of her dear husband.
These important wedding anniversaries have been celebrated. The highest number of years go to Jane and Angelo Vidic who observed the 65th one! Ann and Rudy Cetina had their
62nd, followed by Ann and Frank Doles, their 56th, who recently returned to us from Arizona. Welcome back! — And also A1 and Alice Bozic celebrated the meaningful golden one, number 50. May you all have many more years of similar jubilation.
Ann Tercek shared her letter from Sylvia Vegney, our former cadet, who now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sylvia wrote that there is an open invitation over there for our members to dine with her - you must call her first of course. Sylvia still has breathing problems and doesn’t travel much.
Jo Smith, who is on the mend from a mastectomy operation, had some good news from her granddaughter, Adriene Radcliffe who lives in San Francisco. Adriene is going to Seoul, South Korea to teach English for one year. This is a very exciting assignment. Best of luck to both of you.
Going toward another direction of life, we are happy to announce the arrival of a baby daughter Gabrielle Elizabeth Miller born to Steven and Julie Miller, Jean Miller’s son and daughter in law, on January 2nd. What a wonderful way to begin a new year!
Mentioning the new year, some of us celebrate it in many different ways. We want to extend this interlude to all our new and especially old time members. Some of them are living with others in homes provided such as the Wickliffe Country Place, home to Eli-nore Karlinger and Agnes Bradek. St. Joseph/St. Marks is lucky to have Louise Mlakar as its guest. Meanwhile Jean Kastelic is doing very well on her own in her own home. Vi Zak now lives in the Assisted Living section of Gateway along with many of our other members who moved there during the past year or so. We also want to wish the best to all our out-of-town members, and we hope we will be able to see them sooner or later during this year.
Plans for the National Convention are jelling quite well. We have sold oodles of raffle tickets for the beautiful Slovenian Dolls. There has been a change of delegates who will attend the Convention, however. Ann Tercek will be our representative along with Mary Miller instead of Evelyn Pipoly who is our “Mother of the Year” this year. More on all this later. In the meantime a “Happy Feast Day” to all the Josephs
and Josephines. Be sure to wear your green to our next meeting on March 15th.

Hi everyone! Hope that you have been enjoying this winter season. My nephew Mark Selak and 1 have been hitting the slopes every weekend. I do believe that Mark just may be the next “Tommy Moe”. Our member, Jenny Selak, has been under the weather. She broke her collar bone the first weekend in January. Her husband Stanley suffered a stroke and is now in rehabilitation. My sister Maria, her husband Gus and their children have been taking care of Jenny and Stanley. Please keep them in your prayers so that they will have the strength to endure everything.
My niece Andrea was a very lucky girl - she went to the Super Bowl! She told me that she had a wonderful time. The rest of us had a Super Bowl party at Anka’s house. Thanks, Anka, for a great time. Please remember to attend our first meeting for 1995 on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Girard Library.

Ash Wednesday falls on March 1, and this marks the beginning of Lent. During Lent, pray that all of us may be guided by a sincere heart to make this Lent meaningful.

GET WELL WISHES: Two of our members spent some time in the hospital since our last report. Emily Heidtman (Social member) is reported to be back at her residence and feeling better. Take care of yourself, Emily. We have missed you at the meetings.
Have you ever thought to yourself “no one has problems but me!”, and then just as quickly you hear of someone whose problems are much greater, and all of a sudden you feel guilty for your self-pity. That’s the position I have found myself in very often, and upon sharing with Frances Travnik I realized self-pity has to go. Our prayers and best wishes will follow you, Frances, and our spiritual and physical support will be here whenever you need it. The road you travel will be rough, please let us know where/when we can smooth it out.
Branch 73 collects cancelled stamps for the Sisters at Ursuline College. A very nice thank you note was received, letting us know that our efforts are appreciated. We commend Julie Shisila, Adeline Trzaska and JoAnn Tomsick who are the main supporters of this project. The recognition that we receive truly belongs to you. Thank you.

It is very hard to believe that one month of the New Year is gone and that time just goes by so fast it is hard to keep up with it!
I felt very bad when I read in the ZARJA that Romaine O’Brien Jab-lonski passed away on January 11th. She was a lovely lady and it was so good to see her presiding at the 111.-Ind. State Convention in October. We of Br. 85 extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to her husband, sister, Dolores and brother, John. May she rest in peace. She will be missed.
Connie DeBord, daughter-in-law of our member, Ann DeBord got her master’s degree in education at ISU in December. Our congratulations to Connie who is a very good kindergarten teacher.
Not too much news here but we do want to send best wishes to all members who are not feeling well. God bless.

Our Branch ended the year with a lovely Christmas dinner at the beautiful new home of Mary Lou and Frank Vidergar. The Christmas decor and good food added to the warmth of the home. We had a wonderful time.
Our January meeting was held at my home and the next meeting will be held at the home of Anne Kapel on March 23. We would like more members to attend the meetings and 1 am asking for dues to be paid for 1995.
Our Palačinke Brunch will be held at the Slovene Hall on April 9, 1995. We are anticipating a great attendance. Our “Woman of the Year” will be Emily “Milka” Zupancich. Milka attends all meetings and socials and truly deserves to be honored. The date for this dinner has not been set.
It is with deepest sympathy we report the death of Mary Vidergar on Nov. 9, 1994. She was born on July 10, 1899, the daughter of Frank and Frances Voje. She was a native of Slovenia. Mary was very active and dedicated member of our branch. She was always willing to cook and work for us and other Slovene Lodges. She is survived by two sons, William Vidergar of Fontana, and Frank Vidergar of Colton, CA; three daughters, Marion Sadar of Upland, Frances Watson of Ontario, and Edith Vidergar of Fontana: 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was a great lady! May she rest in peace.
The convention is getting closer and I’m looking forward to seeing many friends there!

It’s hard to believe that a whole month has already gone by in the new year ol 1995. How nice to see the days getting a wee bit longer!
Not much has happened in this area laterly. February will be a short month, then March I st will be Ash Wednesday. How time does fly!
My husband and I had a wonderful experience - meeting a Slovenian exchange student from Ljubljana, a very nice young lady who is in her senior year in High School. Her name is Mija Blaganje, the daughter of parents who are both architects. She was staying with a family in Hayward, WI, some 150 miles north of Willard, when she attended a Superior Diocesan Youth Retreat at Ladysmith, and met my nephew, LaVerne Volovsek, who was the retreat leader. He lives in Rice Lake, not too far from here, either. The fact that Mija was from Slovenia got LaVerne all excited and he wanted us to meet her, so he called his father and together, we drove up to Hayward a few weeks ago to visit. Mija speaks English very well, and as yet has not decided what major studies she will pursue, but will do it in the next five months. She was sponsored by the Youth for Understanding program and the Soros Foundation from which she received a scholarship. Mija hopes to come back again to the U.S. in two years, alternating with her host family’s daughter who will be going to Slovenia
next year. Mija was happy to tell us that she would be receiving First Communion the next day. She said her parents gave her the choice of selecting her own preference in religion and said she wants to be a Catholic. With a big hug and fond words of good bye, we told her not to let anyone change her decision. Regretfully, we didn’t have a chance to invite her to our Slovenian Willard as she was leaving for home in two days. She was here for a full semester. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Slovenian Women’s Union could sponsor an exchange student in some way!
Our prayers and good wishes go out to all our shut-in members, hoping their days will be brighter.

Branch 103 President’s Luncheon
On January 19, Branch 103 newly-clected president, Jill Augustine, entertained the past presidents Irene Odorizzi, Freda Michelitch, and Sabina Bartol, also the recording secretary Matilda Ausich, at a luncheon in her home, the purpose of this friendly get-together was to become acquainted with the former presidents and to discuss future plans and programs that all the members will participate in. Jill’s enthusiasm was contageous and it will be exciting when she can present proposals to the members. We did not meet in February, and Jill was out of town in March, so our meeting in April will be very important when each member can also introduce proposals for discussion. We’re hoping all members will make a sincere effort to attend all meetings, and especially in April when all proposals will be presented for consideration.
We wish to once again express our thanks to Jill for the delicious lunch, and for inviting us to meet in her most beautiful home in Great Falls, Virginia. Jill and her husband have done considerable traveling throughout the world. Her home has many lovely articles from the various countries; e.g., rugs, scarves, furniture, and other lovely possessions too numerous to mention. She also has brought back many ideas on a variety of foods from the many countries visited. We were fortunate to be served two different soups, the fish
salad sandwich, coffee, etc. The luncheon was so special and we all had hearty appetites which showed our appreciation not only for the food but for the effort in preparing it.
We’re hoping for the biggest attendance ever at the April meeting when the future activities for 1995 will be discussed, not only by officers, but by all members who have equal representation.

Branch 105 in Detroit, Ml held their Annual Christmas Party on December 3, 1994 at the Haymarket Restaurant in the Canterbury Village complex in Orion, Ml. This is a newly developed area with several quaint stores and a beautiful Christmas Village specialty store for our shopping enjoyment. Thirty-one members and guests attended this party bringing donations of food and personal gifts to be donated to “Turning Point,” a refuge for abused women and children.
This donation rates a paragraph all to itself. Mother of members Dorothy and Angeline Bernick, Anna Karun, crocheted thirty beautiful hats which she donated to Turning Point. A special thank you to Anna and to all of our members and guests who donated so generously to this worthy cause.
Branch 105 also donated to “The Gift of Reading" and to the ZARJA and the SWU Scholarship Fund. We plan to continue to do what we can for the less fortunate throughout 1995.
On January 21st, at our regular monthly meeting, we elected our officers for 1995; our Mother of the Year, Frances Adamic, also was chosen at this meeting. The luncheon to honor Frances will be held on May 13th at the L-Bow Room Restaurant, 28655 Schoenherr, just South of 12 Mile Road. More details will follow, but mark your calendars now.
Our hostesses for this meeting were Anna Klančnik and Mary Ann Yemec. They provided desserts (tarts) and prizes for our raffle. In addition to the lovely salt and pepper shakers, we also raffled the clowns donated by our house-bound member, Marie Dye. Monies collected were added to our treasury for future use.
We made the plans for our Annual St. Patrick’s Day - Slovenian Style Dance. It will be held on March 18th at the Slovene American Club in Mel-vindale. We will have our usual mouthwatering corned beef sandwiches and liquid refreshments will be available. Music will be by the Klančnik Brothers Orchestra. Tickets were to be available in February at $5.00 per person.
Plans were made for our future meetings and our annual members/ children/ grandchildren’s picnic in June. Let’s hope the weather cooperates this year
-	it’s either too hot or too cold.

On December 22, 1994, the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, Branch 108, celebrated its first year of existence and the yuletide season. The celebration was held at the Virginia Beach Central Library and attended by 9 adult members and 7 junior members. The celebration included singing of Christmas carols, a “Pollyanna’’gift exchange, and traditional Slovenian and American yuletide culinary delites. Additionally, Mary Ann Braeckel shared with the other members an article written by Marie Prisland titled “Christmas in Slovenia”. The article provided Marie Prisland’s memories of her pre-World War II Christmas’ in Slovenian that included gift-giving on 6 December (St. Nicholas Day), the New Year’s tree call JELKA and DLDEK MRAZ (Grand-daddy Frost).

A CRAFTY IDEA!
With the new life that arrives with spring, we usually have a number of babies born during May, June, July (they say it follows after the cold winter nights). If someone you know is about to give birth, you’ll want to make a pair of booties to keep those tiny feet warm.
A very easy knit pattern is yours for $1.00. I have made several pairs of the booties. One lady said she makes several pairs for the baby showers, uses them individually as favors, then gives them to the mother-to-be. Great idea.

Zaradi raznih pred-božičnih priprav in dela, je bila naša božičnica šele na nedeljo 8. januarja v novem letu. Pa to ni motilo prijetno domačega vzdušja in razpoloženja, ampak je bilo v vseh navzočih še nadaljevanje lepe božične skrivnosti. Ta namreč tako naglo preide v vsakdanjost po božičnem dnevu v teh naših zmaterijaliziranih časih. Ker je bil domači g. župnik Fr. Brian odsoten, užival je tiste dni toploto sonca v Arizoni, je imel sv. mašo Fr. F. Perkovich iz Gilberta. Deacon, Mr. Riley ga je povabil na naše božično kosilo. Gotovo je, da sta se oba prijetno počutila v naši družbi. Kosilo je bilo odlično v pripravi De-nnis-a Purkata, ki je sin naše tajnice, Jane Purkat. Tudi kozarček dobrega vinca je spadal zraven in j dal vsemu še veselejše ozadje vseh navzočih.
Kosilo je bilo postreženo ob lepo pogrnjenih mizah, katere je skrbno pripravila Eine Karish, dolgoletna članica, ki se vedno odreže ob takih prilikah. Iskrena hvala, Eine!
Naša novo izvoljena zapisnikarica Angeline (Toots) Hietala nas je tudi prijetno iznenadila z lepim ročnim delom v obliki križa, katerega je dobila vsaka članica pred seboj na mizi. Lepa hvala Angie za to darilo! Da je kosilo bilo tudi še “posladkano” nazadnje, sta podarili” lepo “torto" z napisom: Srečno novo leto, pred. Jean and tajnica Jane, ter dodali še sladoled. Bog plačaj obema ja vse delo in trud!
Medtem, ko so pridne sodelavke po končanem kosilu pospravile mize v dvorani, smo posedle druge okrog stolov v drugem delu in pričele igrati igro ob lepo naloženi
mizi z darili. Kocke so švigale sem in tja in nekaterim je bila sreča mila z večjim kupom daril, kot drugim Vendar po kratkem presledku, smo lahko" kradle" tistim, ki so več imele... Nazadnje pa je le vsaka imela nekaj pred seboj, kar je prineslo vsem mnogo smeha in zabave.
Ob vsem pa smo posegle tudi v nekaj stvari, ki so morale biti ta čas urejene in vse članice so z zanimanjem poslušale, kar nam je povedala pred. Jean. Zvedele smo, da gre kar 26 članic iz Minnesote na konvencijo v San Francisco meseca maja. Povedala je, da imajo tudi vse, ki bodo potovale z avijonom posebne privilegije in se jih morajo poslužiti do 13. januarja. Medtem časom pa vse čakajo še na več informacij glede hotela in podrobnosti, ki bodo s tem v zvezi. Vse ostale članice pa, ki bomo ostale doma jim želimo srečno pot in veliko lepih uspehov pri delu na konvenciji za bodočnost naše Ženske Zveze.
Mimo tega smo zvedele tudi, da je mlada in nadebudna članica, Jaime Šiskar bila izvoljena v šoli, da zastopa v Washingtonu: “National Young Leaders" na konferenci tam od 17-22 januarja letos. Jaime je hčerka, naše podpredsednice
Kathy Siskar in vnukinja naše dolgoletne članice Fran Siskar. Gotovo smo tudi me vse zelo ponosne na Jaime, saj je ena izmed nas in je obenem tudi naše upanje za bodoče delo pri Ženski Zvezi. Ker je s tem združeno veliko stroškov, je bilo soglasno izvoljeno, da ji darujemo $100.00 v ta namen.
Fran Šiskar je pred kratkim pridobila kar 6 novih članic za nas. S seboj je pripeljala hčerko Mary Cossalter, da se udomači v naši sredi. Navzoča je bila tudi nova članica Denise Erchul, katero smo. tudi z veseljem pozdravile.
Pred. Jean je izrazila željo, da bi se vse navzoče članice udeležile po možnosti tudi seje v februarju, katera bo zelo važna. Tedaj bo namreč treba izvoliti komitej za bližajočo se državno konvencijo v Minnesoti, katera bo na Biwabiku meseca septembra. Rabimo novih moči in talentov, da bo uspeh naše podružnice ostal na vrhuncu. Pridite! Vsem našim članicam, posebno tistim, ki se preko leta veliko žrtvujejo za dobrobit naše podružnice izrekamo tu iskreno zahvalo. Njim in vsem ostalim želimo srečno in bogato blagoslovljeno novo leto!

(V maju 1852)
Prvo obvestilo, da je on kandidat za vikariat Gorenji Michigan, je Baraga prejel 27. junija 1852 od milwaukeejskega škofa Hennija, ki mu je pisal: "Zdi se, da Vas božja previdnost kliče za višjega pastirja ob Gorenjem jezeru. Tedaj boste skrbeli tudi za moje ovce, ki so žal tako zapuščene." S tem je mislil na Otavane in Očipvejce svoje škofije. - Mesec dni nato mu je škof Henni spet pisal: “Zdaj zavisi samo še od svetega očeta, ali bo ob Gorenjem jezeru ustanovljen apostolski vikariat ali ne. Mislim, da lahko z gotovostjo računate s tem, da boste morali sprejeti breme na svoje rame."
Polagoma se je govorica razširila med ljudstvom. Baraga je pa zapisal v dnevnik: "Naj se zgodi božja volja! Ne nam, Gospod, ne nam, ampak svojemu imenu daj čast!’’
Bil je tako plemenita in dozorela osebnost, da zase ni iskal časti. Tudi kot škof je živel in delal kot ubožen indijanski misijonar. Škofovstva se pa zato ni branil, ker je upal, da bo potem mogel še vse več storiti za Boga in za duše. Upal je, da bo kot škof laglje odpomogel velikanski duhovni siroščini Gorenjega Michigana, si vzgojil in iz Evrope dobil dovolj duhovnikov, gradil nove cerkve, cerkvene šole itd.
Kljub vsemu govorjenju o njegovem imenovanju je v L'Ansu naprej misijonaril, pisal očipvejski slovar in hodil v keweenawske rudnike.
Že dolga leta je meso le prav poredkoma užival. Leta 1852 se mu je popolnoma odpovedal, - razen če je mora! jesti pri tuji mizi. V tamkajšnjem ostrem podnebju in pri njegovem velikanskem telesnem naporu in duševnem delu je bila tudi ta nova odpoved zelo velika.
V juliju leta 1852 je izgubil svojega prvega slovenskega sodelavca Franca Pirca, ki je v Krivem drevesu misijonaril 12 let, od leta 1840. V Krivem drevesu in na misijonskih podružnicah je imel že skoraj dva tisoč vernikov. Pirc je bil goreč in požrtvovalen misijonar, razumen in preudaren. Leta 1850 je bila ustanovljena škofija v Št. Pavlu v Minnesoti, v lepi ravni deželi s položnimi griči, ki so jo bile Združene države malo poprej kupile od Indijancev. Nova škofija je imela samo 2500 vernikov, sedem cerkva in deset duhovnikov. Njen prvi škof Jožef Cretin (Kreten) je povabil Pirca, naj pride misijonarit med poganske Očipvejce. Pirc se je vabilu odzval, da bi mogel še kaj več dobrega storiti. Imel je že 67 let, a je bil še bister in krepak. Na široko je razpredel svoje misijonsko delo in iz Slovenije dobival sodelavce. Še v svojem 85. letu je oskrboval 12 misijonskih postaj. Privabil je v Minnesoto več Slovencev, tudi svojo sestro Polono z družino. Šele jeseni leta -1873, to je pet let po Baragovi smrti, se je po 38-letnem delu med Indijanci vrnil v
domovino, star 88 let. Na ladji je skoval pesem o Baragi. Eno leto je živel pri frančiškanih v Kamniku, potem pa v ljubljanskem stolnem župnišču. Tam je umrl leta 1880 v svojem 94. letu. Imel je velik pogreb; vodil ga je škof Pogačar. Minnesota je priznala njegove zasluge za krščansko kulturo ameriškega Severozahoda s tem, do je mestecu Rich Prairie (Rič Preri), kjer je nekaj časa pastiroval tudi naš rojak Jakob Trobec, dala ime Pierz. Še danes se mesto imenuje po njem. - Leta 1885 so minnesotski katoličani slovesno praznovali stoletnico njegovega rojstva. Naš rojak Buh je pisal: “V njegovem času se tukaj ni videlo drugega kakor roparske tolpe Indijancev, ki so se selile od kraja do kraja brez stalnega bivališča. Zdaj pa vidimo na vseh krajih, kjer je Pirc prvi zasajal križ, krasne cerkve in veličastne stavbe."
Neki trgovec in poznejši uradnik, ki je dolga leta preživel v La Pointu in okolici, nekatoličan, je v svojih objavljenih spominih zapisal o Baragi tale dogodek iz 2. polovice januarja 1853: Tista zima je bila zelo huda. Mnogo Indijancev je po raznih krajih obolelo, ker niso imeli zadostne hrane ne obleke. Med bolniki v Fond du Lacu je bila tudi zelo uboga in zapuščena vdova s kopico otrok. Ko je Baraga v L’Ansu zvedel o njej, si je oprtal razen mašnih in potnih potrebščin tudi zdravil in krepčil, si navezal krplje in se odpravil na 370 km dolgo pot, sam, brez spremljevalca. Na poti se mu je ena krplja pokvarila in ni mogel po debelem, mehkem snegu skoraj več naprej. Prav takrat je prišel na tisti kraj omenjeni trgovec; 20. januarja je bil odšel s spremljevalci iz La Pointa proti Ontonagonu. Dal je Baragi dobre krplje in enega od svojega spremstva.
-	Nekaj mesecev pozneje sta se z Barago spet srečala na potu. Baraga se mu je še enkrat zahvalil, da mu je omogočil pot in mu tako rekoč rešil življenje. Pripovedoval mu je, da je bil našel v Fond du Lacu več Indijancev zelo bolnih in brez zdravil, zlasti tisto siromašno vdovo in njene otroke; delil jim je od tega, kar je prinesel s seboj, in ostal pri njih tako dolgo, da so se izkopali iz bolezni.
Dne 4. januarja 1853 je Baraga dokončal svoj slovar. Sestavljal ga je dolga leta in “z velikim trudom”, kakor sam pravi. Rokopisa je bilo nič manj ko 1700 strani. Ko so Indijanci iz L'Ansa opravili velikonočno dolžnost in potem šli za javorovim sladkorjem, se je 3. marca odpravil proti Detroitu. Potoval je proti jugovzhodu, do Bay de Noquette (Be de Noket) ob Michiganskem jezeru. Potoval je deset dni. "Prve štiri dni sem moral hoditi peš, deloma tudi na krpljah, ker
je gozdovih ob Gorenjem jezeru snega še tri do štiri palce (en meter) na debelo," pravi v poročilu, ki ga je dal natisniti v Cincinnatiju. “Tako potovanje je utrudljivo, ker je treba prenočevati v gozdu in zavoljo mraza skoraj vso noč ni mogoče zaspati. Od Bay de Noquetta sem na saneh peljal po ledu do Green Baya z osmimi drugimi osebami. Prvi in drugi dan je bil led prav dober in trden; ko smo se pa tretji dan že bližali Green Bayu, je bil led zmerom slabši in zmerom bolj razpokan. Prišli smo srečno preko takih razpok in vodnik nam je zatrdil, da ni nevarno. Prišli pa smo do razpoke, kjer je bil led slab; udrl se je pod nami in v hipu so bili konji, sani in vseh devet oseb v vodi, več kakor eno miljo daleč od brega. To je bilo nekaj strašnega! Eni so plavali proti trdnemu ledu, drugi so si pomagali (pri plavanju) s kosi ledu. Jaz sem sedel na saneh na zadnjem sedežu. Ko smo se udrli, sem se kmalu prijel za led; visel sem na njem, nanj se pa nisem mogel pognati. Bil sem zavit v plašč, ki je postal v vodi neizrečeno težak; sleči ga pa nisem mogel. Ko se tako trudim, kako bi prišel iz vode, mi prihiti na pomoč sopotnik, ki se je bil že rešil, in me potegne na led. Potem smo izvleki še konje, ki so bili do vratu v vodi. To se je zgodilo 9. marca, ko je bilo nenavadno mrzlo. Sever je ostro bril preko leda in obleka je v nekaj minutah primrznila na nas, da smo se komaj mogli ganiti. K sreči je bilo do svetilnika samo še tri milje. Hitro smo se pripeljali tja in ostali tako dolgo, da smo se odpočili in ogreli."
Baraga je potem v Detroitu dejal, da se je ob nezgodi bolj bal za rokopis slovarja kakor za lastno življenje, ker bi ga nikakor ne mogel še enkrat sestaviti. Premočene liste je v škofijskem dvorcu razkladal po sobi in sušil.
Sprevidel je pa, da detroitska tiskarna ne bo mogla dobro natisniti slovarja, zato se je po veliki noči peljal dalje v Cincinnati in se dogovoril s Hemannovo tiskarno. Stanoval je pri češkem duhovniku Klemenu Hammerju, kateremu je bil v aprilu 1837 na Dunaju izposloval izseljeniško dovoljenje. Hammer je služboval tri leta v Detroitu, potem je pa prišel v Cincinnati za župnika pri nemški cerkvi Matere božje. Pri vernikih je bil zelo priljubljen. Slovel je tudi kot pesnik nabožnih in drugih pesmi in kot pisatelj člankov o verskem in družabnem stanju v Severni Ameriki. -Baraga je zdaj imel v njegovi župni cerkvi vsako nedeljo nemško pridigo. Dolge tri mesece in pol je vodil in popravljal tisk. Slovar je bil 9. julija dotiskan.

As you probably know, March 17th is the feast of St. Patrick, the patron saint of the Emerald Isle. Legend has it that he rid the Isle of all its snakes.
Well, I don’t know how much of the legend is fact and how much is fiction, but my research did teach me a few other facts about the saint.
He’s believed to have been born in the year 389. Raised and educated as a Christian, he had a reverence for the Roman Empire. His father was a middle-class landlord.
When Patrick was about 16, he was kidnapped by Irish marauders, unhappy with Rome’s occupancy in their native land. The exact place of Patrick’s bondage is unsure. However, he was held captive for six years. It was during this time he was subject to religious emotion and experienced visions encouraging him to escape.
It’s believed he fled to the coast of Wicklow where he found a vessel engaged in the export of Irish wolf dogs.
After about three days at sea, the ship landed on the west coast of Gaul. Patrick, then, journeyed 28 days through a desert. At the end of his journey he entered the monastery of Levins.
Patrick experienced more dreams. In one he described meeting a man named Victorious,, bearing an uncountable amount of epistles. One was handed to Patrick, who took it and read it. It began, “The Voice of the Irish.” It is recorded that as he read it, in his mind he heard a voice say, “We pray thee, holy youth, to come and walk again amongst us as before.”
He did return to Ireland, but not until a number of years had past. While in Ireland, Patrick had a number of conflicts with the High King, Loigoire and his druids, who did not appreciate Patrick’s promotion of his foreign creed. Finally, it came down to several tests of skill between Patrick and Loigoire. In the end, the king, although unwilling to convert, offered Patrick his protection.
St. Patrick is believed to have died in the year 461 due to ailing health.
