Sovjetsko ponudbo Indiji za napredek mejnega ozemlja proti Kitajski smatrajo za nevarno — Sovjstiji bo odkrila večino vojaških tajn. NEW DELHI, Ind. Čemu siliti take državljane na volišča? Jakob Resnik. V Bolgariji jih gojijo okoli 250 sort. Nič čudnega torej, če je proizvod zelo iskan in temu primerno drag. Bolgari prodajajo rožno olje v mnoge dežele, in sicer pred-j vsem v tiste z razvito industrijo parfumov. Kilogram olja stane do 1,800 dolarjev. Predno bo do take rešitve prišlo, bo to vprašannje prišlo pred Kongres v temeljit pretres. “Omsk smo zapustili komaj eno uro pozneje kakor on in smo jezdili kolikor mogoče hitro po najkrajši poti. Ako ni ostal v Omsku, pridemo v Tomsk pred njim in ga prestrežemo. In gorje! The Bucs were never the favorites for any single game during the entire Series. Here is the way the odds fluctuated from day to day: First game — 5 to 6, take your choice; Yankees to win the Series, 10 to 13. Second game — even money; Pirates favored in the Series, 5-6. Third game — Yankees favored 2-3; Yankees in the Series 5-9. Fourth game — Yankees favored, 5-8; Yankees in the Series 1-5. Fifth game — Yankees in the Series, 5-9. Sixth game — Yankees, favored, 5-6; Pirates to win the Series, 1-3. Seventh game — Yankees favored to win, 5-7. Series Seen by President via TV: President. Eisenhower had intended to attend one Series game in New York and one in the Steel City, but he was forced to change his plans in order to keep in close touch with developments: in the United Nations General Assembly, Commissioner Ford Ffick relates. “The President was all ready to come but decided the situation in the UN was so tender that he ouldn’t take the time off. The White House announced that the President had seen at least a portion of the World’s’ Series over television. Small Guys ‘Giants’ of Series: Baseball scouts who turn down potential players because of their size may contemplate now before rejecting anyone after checking the Series box scores. Pirates pitching heroes, Roy Face and Harvey Had-dix, are small as ball players go. Face is 5-7%, 155 pounds. Haddix is 5-9, 160 pounds. -The biggest Yankee bat. Bobby Richardson, carries -pppivis on a 5-9 frame. Whitey Ford at 5-10 isupports 178.. And Yogi Berra, who’s played in more Series than anyone, stands 5-8, although he packs 191 pounds. Williams is ‘Hero’ to Stan’s Mother: Ted Williams, now retired Star of the Boston Red Sox, was sitting in a box seat at Forbes Field for the second game of the Series when a lady approached him. “Ted,” she said, “I’m Stan Musial’s mother. You have always been my hero. Would you mind if I had my picture taken with you?” Williams was flattered and obliged. Roy Face Gives Tip on Fork Ball: Here is the story on how Roy Face’s fork ball works: He grips the ball between his index and middle fingers, being careful to avoid touching the seams, and delivers it at half-speed (his change-up pitch) with the same motion he employs for his fast ball. The thumb rests under the ball to guide the pitch. The pitch usually sinks, but, if it comes in high, it moves from side to side like a flutter ball. —------O .. ... Will you disfranchise yourself? Millions upon millions of Americans do that, in effect, each election year. They do it by failing to vote. They’re too lazy, too indifferent, or “too busy” to spend the brief time and effort it takes to go to the polling booth. The result is that people are elected to office, and often the highest offices, by what amounts to minority vote. We all pay lip service to the right of free franchise. And that’s as it should be—it is the greatest single defense we have against dictatorship and political oppression. But is is meaningless unless the words are matched with deeds. The future of freedom depends on men and women who will analyze candidates and platforms, choose those they think best capable of guiding the nation’s destinies in the stormy days that lie ahead—and vote accordingly. si vuas uois name [ ^eklg "fev! tot! $ Catholic War Veterans St. Vitus Post 1655 fob god FOR COUNTRV FOR lIOiYIt Membership Drive— Our regular meeting of Oct. 18, 1960 served as a kickoff for the New Membership Drive which will end midnight December 31, 1960. An inspiring talk on the potential membership in St. Vitus Parish, by our Chaplain, Msgr. Louis B. Along with these activities, they participated in various cultural and civic events. This past year, they were cited by the United States Veterans’ Administration of Washington, D.. C. The Chief Chaplain for United States Veterans” Hospitals in Washington lauded and thanked the groups as the only such group in the entire United States making yearly visits with its special type of visit to the U. S. Veterans’ Hospital in Brecks-ville, Ohio. The musical program on October 30 consists of many infrequently heard Slovene choral numbers and many familiar English songs. The soloists are Jane Poznik, her brother, Miatthew Dolence and Frank Kovacic. A reunion of all former members and sponsors is planned for the early part of the afternoon in the school auditorium. Making its debut in the United States and Canada, the company of eighty young men and women is the largest choral organization, domestic or foreign ever .to tour so extensively on these shores. Playing a most important part in the renaissance and recognition of Yugoslavian choral music since the war is Bogdan Babich who is the inspiring conductor of the Chorus. Mr. Babich’s devotion to Yugoslavian music inspired him to turn to composing and arranging, and many of his special arrangements have been sung by the chorus to critical plaudits throughout Europe. Of the^e, three will be sung on the American tour: “Hoška Svita” (a choral suite in Serbo-Croat): “Cucul”’ (“The Forest Devil.’” sung in Macedonian) and a special arrangement of a passage from Peter Jonjovic’s opera “Kostana.” The first two '■ections of the program to be sung here by the Chorus will run the gamut of choral works from such masters of the 16th century as Monteverdi and Gallus-Pe-telin, through the romantics of the 19th century, to the contemporary works of such men as Oroff and Skalovski. Among the instruments to be heard here are the zurla, an ancient type of oboe favored in Macedonia and Bosnia; the toupan, a national drum played with large and small sticks in contrasting rythms; the frula a pastoral ancestor of the flute; and the Dvojnitze, a wind instrument consisting of two pipes for principal and counter melodies. The exciting music of the chorus was recorded recently in Jugoton, Yugoslavia and has just been released for American collectors. Reviews by European critics have been unanimous in praising the chorus. Very few of the world’s great choruses can claim enjoyment of such fabulous reviews from such widely different parts of the world. The appearance in Cleveland . of the Branko Krsmanovich Chorus promises to be one of the most exciting, colorful and musically satisfying events in a number of concert seasons. Keepsake Invitation in Gold IOO Free Informais STOP IN AND CHOOSE FROM OUR CATALOG AMERICAN HOME PUBLISHING CO. 6117 St. Clair Ave. Ceniralized Information Service Map indicates how Ohio is divided into four code areas for direct dialing of long distance calls. Centralized information center for obtaining telephone numbers in the northeast portion (216 code area* will be in operation at Canton beginning October 16. Similar center« hi the other three areas will be inaugurated later. Centralized information service | to assist telephone users dialing long distance calls to most points throughout northeastern Ohio was inaugurated Sunday, Oct. 16. The new information center is located in Ohio Bell’s exheange building in downtown Canton. Information operators there will be equipped to provide telephone num- : bers for any dialable community in ] the “216” Direct Distance Dialing j area within a matter of seconds. Increased speed in obtaining “Information”’ will be aided by the J fact that telephone users will be able to dial directly into the Canton center without charge from anywhere in the country where Direct Distance Dialing is in operation. Callers from within the northeastern Ohio “216” code area will be able to reach the information center by following exactly the same dialing procedure they use for dialing the actual long distance | calls. The telephonenumber of the information center will be 555-1212 Persons wishing to reach the information center from points outside the northeastern Ohio “216” code area naturally must dial the 216 code ahead of the center’s telephone number. Establishment of a centralized switchboard for providing information for these northeastern Ohio telephone numbers is a fore-runner to similar centers in the remaining three Ohio long distance code areas as well.as in the 100 or more code areas across the North American continent. A few of these centers outside of Ohio already are in operation. The telephone number for each of these centralized information bureaus will be the same — 555-1212. Callers seeking information in any given code area where such a center is in operation will be advised by the long distance operator to dial that particular area code and the 555-1212 number. Ohio Bell Telephone Co. said that increased speed, efficiency and convenience to the subscribers desiring out-of-town information will be the end result of the new centralized information bureaus. They’ll eMminate the need for the local operator to transfer callers to another operator in the distant city to gain the information they want. Instead, the caller, himself, will dial an information operator who has all the 'information he needs right at her finger tips. Now You Know “Who was the first electrician?” little Johnny asked his father. “Adam,” ’was the reply, “he furnished the parts for the first loudspeaker.” Monuments to Pres. (Maj. Gen.) Garfield and Maj. Gen. M. D. Leggett Rarely Indeed has any place in the South been named for a Union general of the Civil War. Ohio’s General William Tecum-seh Sherman in his book stated: “Along Peach Tree Creek was an eminence then called Bald Hill, but since known as Leggett’s Hill, from which Atlanta could be shelled”. This hill was named for Major General Mortimer D. Leggett, commander of the Third Division of the 17th Army Corp, whose troops captured the location from Gener-I al Hood’s troops in the battle i of Atlanta. General Leggett, from Mont-viUe in northeastern Ohio, entered the Union army as Colo-I nel of the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was organized at Zanesville, January 11, 1861. This reginieot was at the battle of Shiloh as well as in the Atlanta campaign, for which Ohio supplied 76 regiments of infantry, seven regiments of cavalry and fifteen batteries of artillprv Following the Civil War, General Leggett returned to his law practice in Cleveland. At the dedication of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square in Cleveland, July 4, 1894, he was Grand Marshal of the parade that was hailed as “one of the greatest and most comprehensive processions ever seen in Cleveland”. General Leggett’s interests in education led him into a prominent role in establishing a free school system in Ohio. Today his monument, a huge boulder, over his last resting place in Cleveland’s beautiful Lakeview Cemetery, is just across the road from the impressive monument and tomb of President James A. Garfield, wartime friend of General Leggett and a Civil War Major General in his own right before moving to the White House. National Youth Conference on the Atom Thirty-one more top high school science students have been nominated in area competition to send six Northeast Ohio delegates to the second national Youth Conference on the Atom. New names were listed by The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., sponsor of the program in this area. Among them was Patricia Opaskar of Regina High School. All told, 54 science “whiz kids” have now been named by their principals as candidates to attend the unique annual assembly. The nominating period ended Wednesday, October 5. From the record number of candidates — 11 more than last year — the best six will be determined this week, The Illuminating Company said. Judges, representing the cream of faculty science experts at Cleveland’s five major colleges, will pick the delegates on the basis of interest, science ability and all-round leadership. In store for the six prize winners, plus two of their teachers, is a 3-day look at the peaceful atom, October 20, 21 and 22, at Chicago’s famed Museum of Science and Industry.. The agenda will include reports from both business and govornic development in all fields, and mont experts on the status of atom-tours of two of the country’s leading atomic facilities near Chicago. Teachers who will accompany the local student delegation will be the two named for the No. 1 and 2 ranking students of the too six. All trio and meeting expenses for the Northeast Ohio group will be paid by The Illuminating Co.
