Danes je beseda o luči in veselju. S svojim prihodom na svet nas Jezus ni samo odrešil greha, ampak je tudi prinesel na svet »veliko luč« in veselje. V prvem berilu je napoved tega, evangelij prinaša uresničenje, drugo berilo je opomin in spodbuda za oznanjevanje blagovesti. Takoj po krstu v Jordanu in skušnjavah v puščavi pride Jezus v Kafarnaum. Evangelist Matej v Kristusovi navzočnosti na tem mestu vidi božji »da« na davno obljubo. Na to spomni Jezus sam, ko pravi: »Tako se je spolnilo, kar je bilo napovedano po preroku Izaiju« (Mt 4,14). Jezus je luč, ki pomeni pot, resnico in življenje. Ko se je rodil, je bil napovedan kot »veliko veselje za vse ljudi« (Lk 2,10). Jezus ne bo oznanjeval sam ampak povabi učence, da gredo za njim in z jim živijo. Torej: posnamenje (hoja za Jezusom) in skupnost (ne le vsak zase). Božji načrt se je pričel uresničevati. Zaprtje Janeza Krstnika je bilo za Jezusa znamenje, da je prišel čas novega kraljestva. Neko poslanstvo se je zaključevalo, da bi lahko nastopilo novo, boljše in veličastnejše. Jezus je verjetno zapustil Nazaret, ker so mu tam že nasprotovali. Bog uporablja v svoj prid tudi naše napake, ko Jezusa pošilja v Kafarnaum, v mesto, ki je bilo bolj sprejemljivo za novost evangelija. Kafarnaum je bilo cvetoče mesto sredi rodovitne pokrajine. V njem je imela duhovščina veliko manjšo besedo kot v Judeji. V deželi so se mešali tuji vplivi, ki so po transportnih poteh prihajali iz Damaska in Egipta. Matej poudarja uresničenje prerokb. Izaija, čigar citat je uporabil, je opi­soval asirsko podjarmljenje severnega kraljestva leta 730 pred Kristusom. Kristusov prihod bo prinesel novo luč in odstranil bolečine in žalost. Ti, ki so sedeli v temi, ti ki so prebivali v deželi smrtne sence, so prejeli »venec namesto pepela, olje veselja namesto žalnega ogrinjala, hvalnico namesto obupa« (lz 61.3). We need to hear what you think are the pros and cons of our community, and where you think we need to make some changes. Yes, some of these things may be hard to hear, but this conversation is a necessary one. Along with this conversation, we also need people to step forward and lend a hand a time or two. The Future of St. Gregory the Great Parish, our Slovenian Church and Cultural Community Čeprav se je božični čas uradno že iztekel, smo v nedeljo 15. januarja, z zborom in ob spremljavi instrumentov, še enkrat pri maši zapeli božične pesmi. Ker je v Kanadi praznik Gospodovega razglašenja - sv. Trije kralji - prestavljen na nedeljo, je potem praznik Jezusovega krsta v ponedeljek. Še enkrat hvala vsem, ki ste letos sodelovali pri pripravi, organizaciji in obhajanju božičnih praznikov. Samo, če skupaj združimo moči in talente, potem je tudi praznovanje lepo in bogato. Sofia in Julija Labricciosa, Nikola Lukežič Fr. Drago, John H., Sofija L., Julia L., Nikola L., Carl V. Že precej let se v hamiltonski baziliki enkrat letno zbiramo na multikulturalni maši - odslej bo to vedno na tretjo nedeljo v januarju, ko je tudi svetovni dan migrantov in beguncev. Ker v Hamiltonu živi res veliko različnih narodnostnih skupnosti - saj se vsako nedeljo obhaja maša v več kot 15 jezikih - se je škofija odločila, da se vsako leto pripravi maša, pri kateri sodelujejo različne skupine. Različni deli maši so ali zapeti ali prebrani v različnih jezikih, vsi prisotni pa imajo v rokah tudi knjižico z angleškim besedilom - na levi strani je platnica te knjižice. Letošnje leto smo Slovenci sodelovali pri prvem berilu, ki ga je prebrala Veronika Košir in pri prošnjah, ki jo je prebrala Alenka Košir. Po sveti maši, ki jo je vodil škof Douglas Crosby ob somaševanju duhovnikov, smo se zbrali na kratkem kulturnem programu, ki so ga pripravile različne skupine - plesi, petje... Po zaključku programa so bili vsi navzoči povabljeni, da se podprejo z dobrotami, ki so jih prinesle posamezne skupine. Zelo lepo in bogato doživtje za vse, ki so se udeležili slovesne svete maše. V petek, 20. januarja 2017, smo po maši, z vsemi navzočimi praznovali 90. rojstni dan naše faranke PAVLE PELCAR. Iskrene čestitke in še na mnoga zdrava leta! V petek, 20. januarja, so delavci instalirali še manjkajoče ograje ob prenovljenem vhodu pri slovenski šoli in pa ob novi rampi pred cerkvijo. Tako bodo vsi, ki težje stopijo čez stopnico, lažje, hitreje in varneje prišli do cerkve. First Reading Isaiah 8:23 – 9:3 The prophet foresees the great day of liberation when the Lord will visit his people. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:10-13. 17 Paul reminds the Corinthians that the person of Christ and his sacrificial death and resurrection are the basis of their unity. Gospel Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus proclaims that the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled in his own person, and he begins to gather the apostles about him. “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Illustration Fish and fishing, in one way or another, have played a large part in the cultural life of Christianity. From Jesus calling his first apostles, to the early Christian symbol of the fish representing Christ, to eating fish on a Friday, fish have been involved. In the time of the apostles, cured fish was a great deli-cacy and there was a curing factory at Magdala, home of Mary Magdalene, on the Sea of Galilee. This raises the ironic possibility that cured fish from the Sea of Galilee may have ended up on the dining tables of the Roman elite. Some of the Romans were converted to the apostolic preaching, others perse-cuted the apostles. Imagine Pontius Pilate or Herod eating fish caught by Peter, James and John! The fish sauce so loved by the Romans, garum, was con-sumed in great quantity. Fish has also always been considered as good for the brain. This certainly seems true of St Thomas Aquinas, who, while he was teaching in Paris, was given a barrel of fish a week by King Louis IX. On his deathbed, far from the sea, Thomas asked for some fresh herring, his favourite fish, and lo and behold, a fishmonger, who normally had nothing but sar-dines, turned up at the monastery door with pre-cisely that item. Gospel Teaching It is no accident, then, that Jesus chooses his first apostles from among fishermen. Everything that the Lord does has relevance for our salvation. The very act of casting nets and gathering in speaks of the role of the apostle. Our Lord is also sanctifying the work of the disciples, and, on a practical level, he is choosing men who were physically tough, used to dealing with sudden storms on the Sea of Galilee. Soon after, he chooses Matthew, who would be able to read and write fluently, just the sort of man who would be able to record things accurately. In his teaching Jesus also uses the image of the shepherd a great deal. Indeed, when he confirms Peter as the head of the apostles, he does so with the threefold command of “feed my sheep”. So the world of work in general is sanctified by the teach- ing of the Lord, and the work of fishing, shepherd-ing and drawing up accounts is especially favoured in his imagery. However, today’s Gospel also alludes to the times when our work is not going so well, and when remedial work is necessary. When Jesus sees James and John, they are in their boat, mending their nets. On one level, they are simply carrying out a routine task. On another level, the scene might represent all those times when our work grinds to a halt, the nets are broken, the wheels come off. This happens in our wider lives as well. In a fallen world, a lot that we do can seem futile, or can end in failure. Application However, whatever our line of work, whatever skills we have, whatever talents we have, we can recognise them, first of all, as gifts of God. These are, at the same time, our own works and our own gifts and talents. The two are not in competition. God can take what we have naturally, and raise it up to a supernatural level by God’s power. This is a very important and basic element in all authentic Chris-tian reflection. God’s grace builds up and perfects all that is natural; it does not override or short-circuit it. Because everything created is already loved and kept in being by God, it is already good. God can raise up any natural thing to become even better by God’s power.
