Portret Slavka Ciglenečkega
S prvim delom 66. številke Arheološkega vestnika se želimo posebej pokloniti kolegu Slavku Cigle-nečkemu ob 65. rojstnem dnevu.
Razsežnosti njegovega prispevka k razvoju slovenske arheologije bi bilo težko izmeriti, kakor tudi odmev njegovega dela, s katerim je Slovenijo postavil na znanstveni zemljevid rimskega imperija v pozni antiki. Najsi gre pri tem za izraziti občutek za topografijo in predanost prostoru ali pa za zelo globoko poznavanje materialne kulture, povsod postavlja temelje, na katerih gradimo podobo časa po propadu cesarstva.
Iz njegovega obsežnega opusa, ki je razviden iz bibliografije, želimo na tem mestu izpostaviti le nekaj mejnikov. Prvi je vsekakor knjiga Höhenbefestigungen aus der Zeit vom 3. bis 6. Jh. im Ostalpenraum oz. Višinske utrdbe iz časa 3. do 6. st. v vzhodnoalpskem prostoru. Gre za objavo prirejene doktorske disertacije, kjer je združil rezultate svojega dolgoletnega sistematičnega obiskovanja arheoloških najdišč in preučevanja do tedaj skromne in raztresene literature o poznoantičnih višinskih naseljih v jugovzhodnih Alpah ter predstavil poselitveni vzorec za poznoantično obdobje. Na nekaterih ključnih najdiščih je tudi sam raziskoval. Monografski objavi Kučarja v Beli krajini in Tinja nad Loko pri Žusmu prinašata prvi celoviti prikaz gradiva in rezultatov terenskih raziskovanj poznoantičnih naselbin in sta temeljnega pomena za nadaljnje delo.
Njegova raziskovalna širina se kaže v izjemno širokem spektru tematik, s katerimi se ukvarja. Posebej velja omeniti študije kulta in povezav antične mitologije s sodobnimi šegami in obredi. Prvi je prepoznal tedaj še izredno skromne sledove zgodnjesrednjeveške poselitve nekaterih višinskih točk, pionirski pa je bil tudi prispevek k preučevanju poznoantičnega keramičnega gradiva.
Ko se je leta 1991 prvič povzpel na tedaj še arheološko neopredeljeno najdišče Tonovcov grad pri Kobaridu, je takoj prepoznal njegov potencial - tako v znanstvenem smislu kot v smislu povezave arheologije z okoljem in s turistično ponudbo. Njegova zavzetost in zagnanost ljudi v lokalnem okolju sta omogočili dolgoletne sistematske raziskave na tej izjemni točki, ki so bile zaključene z znanstveno monografijo. V njej je poudaril pomen naselbine tudi v širšem okolju jugovzhodnih Alp. Raziskani objekti so predstavljeni na kraju samem in vključeni v lokalno turistično ponudbo.
Omeniti moramo tudi njegovo pedagoško delo na Oddelku za arheologijo Filozofske fakultete Univerze v Ljubljani, kjer sta skupaj s kolegom Andrejem Pleterskim ob svojem rednem delu na Inštitutu za arheologijo ZRC SAZU desetletje skrbela, da sta pozna antika in zgodnji srednji vek okrepila svoje mesto v študijskem programu.
Svoj pečat je pustil tudi pričujoči reviji, saj je bil dolgoletni član uredniškega odbora, 10 let pa tudi odgovorni urednik.
Vedno je globoko vpet v delo. V zadnjih letih je pozornost iz sedaj že dobro razumljenih jugovzhodnih Alp in Balkana usmeril v širši prostor rimskega imperija. Tako poleg objave njegovih prvih samostojnih izkopavanj na Korinjskem hribu v Suhi krajini nestrpno pričakujemo sintetično študijo o rimskem imperiju v pozni antiki.
Ob vsem povedanem pa ni mogoče spregledati njegove širine, naklonjenosti, skromnosti in čuta za ljudi, zaradi katerih je v naših očeh ne le cenjen sodelavec, temveč tudi izredno drag prijatelj.
S tabulo gratulatorio in prispevki, ki sledijo, mu želimo od srca čestitati, pripraviti veselje in izraziti naše spoštovanje.
A portrait of Slavko Ciglenečki
We would like to pay homage to our colleague Slavko Ciglenečki on his 65th birthday by dedicating the first part of the 66th volume of Arheološki vestnik to him.
It would be difficult to measure the true extent of his contribution to the development of Slovenian archaeology or the resonance of his work, with which he put Slovenia on the scientific map of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity. Whether through his sense of topography and devotion to the landscape or through his profound knowledge of the material culture, he shaped the foundations on which we are still building an image of this period after the end of the Empire.
From his extensive opus, as reflected in his bibliography, only a few milestones will be emphasized. The first is certainly the book Höhenbefestigungen aus der Zeit vom 3. bis 6. Jh. im Ostalpenraum, his revised PhD thesis, where he joined the results of systematic study of archaeological sites and the then modest and scattered literature about Late Antique hilltop settlements in the south-eastern Alps, and presented a settlement pattern for the period of Late Antiquity. Some sites he excavated himself. His monographs on Kučar in Bela krajina and Tinje above Loka near Žusem represent the first comprehensive publications of the artefacts and architecture at settlements from Late Antiquity, and are of crucial importance for further research.
The wide extent of his scientific interests is reflected in the spectrum of topics to which he has devoted his attention. Especially worthy of mention are the studies of cults and the connections of mythology and modern customs and rites. He was the first to recognize the then extremely scarce traces of early medieval presence at certain hilltop sites. His pioneer contribution to the study of Late Antique pottery should also be noted here.
In 1991, for the first time he visited the then still unexplored site of Tonovcov grad near Kobarid and immediately recognized its potential - in scientific terms as well as in connecting archaeology to the local community and tourism. His interest, as well as the efforts of the local community, made the long-lasting systematic investigation of this exceptional site possible. The conclusion to the excavations was marked with a scientific publication, where he stressed the importance of the settlement in the broader context of the south-eastern Alps. The excavated structures have been presented in situ and are featured in the local historical trails.
Mention should be made of his teaching in the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, where together with Andrej Pleterski, in addition to their responsibilities at the Institute of Archaeology ZRC SAZU, for a decade they ensured that the position of the periods of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages was greatly strengthened in the syllabus.
Having been a long-term member of the editorial board and the editor-in-chief of Arheološki vestnik for 10 years, he also left his mark on the series.
He is always busy. In recent years, his attention has moved from the now well-understood southeastern Alps and Balkans to the wider Roman Empire. In addition to the publication of his first independent excavations at Korinjski hrib in Suha krajina, we are impatiently awaiting a new study of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity.
On top of everything noted above, it is impossible to overlook his openmindedness, benevolence, modesty, and empathy, which in our eyes make him not only a college but also a very dear friend.
