- PREGLED NAJVAŽNEJŠIH DOGODKOV -
Po torkovih volitvah ima Bush skoro prosto pot do strankinega imenovanja — Med demokrati trenutno ima prednost Dukakis
OAK BROOK, 111. — Včeraj je republikanski predsedniški kandidat sen. Robert Dole odpustil več kot polovico svojih kampanjskih delavcev, kar je baje prvi jasen dokaz, da bo kmalu opustil svojo kandidaturo. Prav tako je Dole zelo omejil oglaševanje po televiziji, v javnih nastopih včeraj pa je govoril defenzivno. Njegovo obnašanje je posledica velikega poraza, ki ga je doživel na primarnih volitvah pretekli torek, na katerih je njegov tekmec George Bush zmagal kar v šestnajstih od vseh sedemnajstih držav. Dole razume, da bodo volitve prihodnji torek v Illinoisu odločilne, ankete javnega mnenja pa že kažejo, da Busha podpira 58% republikancev, Dole-a pa le 31%.
Včeraj je svojo kandidaturo opustil kong. Jack Kemp, ki je rekel, da bi bil pripravljen biti podpredsedniški kandidat, ni pa se izjavil ali za Busha ali za Dolea. Drugi Še aktivni republikanski kandidat, Pat Robertson, je tudi bil poražen na torkovih volitvah in ga politični analitiki nimajo več za resnega tekmeca Bushu. Robertson pa je rekel, da bo vztrajal vse do strankine konvencije, ker meni, da je z odhodom Kempa sedaj edini resnični konservativec v predsedniški tekmi.
Med demokrati je slika manj jasna. Na torkovih volitvah je dobil določeno prednost guverner Michael Dukakis, presenetil pa je sen. Albert Gore, 39-letni senator iz Tennesseeja, ki je od vseh demokratov v politični opredelitvi najbolj sredinski. Gore je dobil veliko več glasov, kot so mislili njegovi tekmeci, da bo. Vendar Gore še ni dokazal, da ima kaj posebne podpore izven južnih predelov ZDA, tako na primer v Illinoisu, kjer praktično niti nima kampanjske organizacije. Jesse Jackson je dobil pretekli torek precej delegatov za strankino konvencijo in ti mu bodo ostali zvesti do kraja. Tako bo igral Jackson veliko vlogo na konvenciji, kajti bo njegova podpora oz. podpora njegovih delegatov morda ključnega pomena za uspešnega kandidata. Nihče ne misli, da bi strankina konvencija izbrala Jacksona za svojega kandidata, niti ne za podpredsedniškega kandidata, vendar utegne Jackson zelo močno vplivati na strankino platformo. Ker je Jackson skrajni liberalec v domači politiki, v zunanji politiki pa izredno popustljiv in hkrati tudi brez vsake trezne usmeritve, bo lahko njegov vpliv za stranko na novembrskih volitvah porazen. Najhujši udarec na torkovih volitvah je doživel kong. Richard Gephardt. V Illinoisu nima izgleda, njegova kampanjska organizacija pa nima več denarja, da bi lahko primerno nadaljeval. Med Prednostmi guvernerja Dukakisa, da je njegova kampanjska organizacija finančno v kar dobrem stanju.
Reaganova vlada pripravlja sankcije zoper Ranamo — Kongresniki Belo hišo podpirajo — Gen. Noriega išče podporo od Gadafija
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Reaganova administracija je izjavila, da ne bo poslala Ranami 6,7 milijona dolarjev, ki je četrtletna hajemnina za uporabo panamskega preko-Pa- ZDA že ne pošiljajo več dolarjev v Ranamo — panamska valuta je pač ameriški dolar — zato so banke v Panami zaprte že
kot teden dni. Ker navadni Panamčani kimajo več dolarjev, trgovine pa prodajajo samo za dolarje, je prišlo do precejšnjega gospodarskega zastoja, ki se stopnjuje z vsa-
kim dnevom. To je tudi želja Reaganove vlade, ker računa, da bodo Panamci slej ko prej pod takšnim gospodarskim pritiskom izsilili odhod poveljnika panamske vojske in dejanskega voditelja države gen. Manuela Norie-ge. V zadnjih dneh je prišlo do spopadov med demonstranti, ki zahtevajo odhod Nori-ege, in vojaškimi enotami.
Včeraj je spodnji dom Kongresa sprejel resolucijo, ki apelira na Reagana, naj vendar podvzame še strožje ekonomske in politične ukrepe zoper gen. Noriegov režim, vendar ne Bela hiša in ne kongresniki ne želijo, da bi prišlo do kakšne neposredne oz. vojaške intervencije v Panami. Upanje v Washingto-nu je, da bodo ekonomski ukrepi v krajšem času izsilili padec Noriege, ki pa ne kaže nobene pripravljenosti kloniti pod pritiskom. V iskanju podpore po svetu, je Noriege pozval libijskega vlastodržca Gadafija, naj obe državi sodelujeta skupaj proti ameriškemu imperializmu.

Washington, D.C. — Včeraj je predsednik Reagan dejal v intervjuju s skupino tujih novinarjev, da pomemben del izraelske vlade podpira ameriški načrt za mir na Srednjem vzhodu, ki ga je zadnje teden med osebnimi obiski pri raznih arabskih državah in Izraelom zagovarjal državni sekretar George Shultz. Proti načrtu pa je predsednik vlade Jicak Šamir, ki po prišel prihodnji teden na obisk v Washington. Reagan je rekel, da bo skušal prepričati Samirja, naj vendar pristane na ta načrt.
Dunaj, Avstrija — V televiziranem govoru je avstrijski predsednik Kurt Waldheim obžaloval v imenu Avstrije za vojne zločine, ki so jih zagrešili avstrijski nacisti v letih, ko je bila Avstrija sestaven del tretjega Rajha. Waldheim pa ni nič govoril o svoji vlogi kot oficir v nemški vojski, a je dal vedeti, da ne namerava zapustiti svojega mesta do I. 1992, ko bo njegova mandatna doba potekla.
Moskva, ZSSR — Elitna ekipa policistov je bila poslala v azerbaidžansko mesto Sumgait, kjer je bilo pred nedavnim v nacionalističnih izgredih ubitih po uradnih poročilih 32, v neuradnih pa veliko več ljudi. Policisti bodo iskali tiste, ki so vodili oz. bili najbolj aktivni v izgredih.
Ženeva, Švi. — Sovjetski diplomat, ki spremlja pogajanja med lutkarskim kabulskim režimom in Pakistanom, katerih namen je doseči sporazum, po katerem bi sovjetske čete zapustile Afganistan, Pakistan pa ne bi več podpiral aktivnosti upornikov, je rekel, da bo ZSSR tudi po odhodu svojih čet pošiljala vojaško pomoč lutkarskemu režimu. Sovjeti pa zahtevajo ustavitev vse ameriške, kitajske in druge podpore upornikom.
Moskva, ZSSR — Sovjetska sredstva javnega obveščanja poročajo, da je 11-članska družina glasbenikov ugrabila potniško letalo Aeroflot. Ugrabitelji so hoteli v London. Ko je pa letalo pristalo, da bi dobilo dovolj goriva za tak polet, je posebna vojaška enota letalo napadlo, v spopadu pa je bilo ubitih 5 ugrabiteljev ter nekaj potnikov in članov posadke.
Lhasa, Tibet — Zopet je prišlo do izgredov Tibetancev zoper kitajske zasedbene oblasti. Ubitih je bilo nekaj demonstrantov, padlo je tudi nekaj policistov. Menda je bilo v zadnjih dneh aretiranih do 600 ljudi. Demonstranti so zahtevali neodvisnost za Tibet.

V	torek, 8. marca, je umrla na svojem domu Frances Lekan, ki je 3. marca praznovala svoj 100. rojstni dan, rojena Perko v fari Krka, Slovenija, od koder je prišla v Ameriko 1. 1906, vdova po 1. 1958 umrlem možu Josephu, mati č.g. Josepha iz reda Marianistov v Dav-lonu, O., Franka, Johna, Louisa (ki služi kot diakon v Chicagu), Anthonvja, Fannie Mlinček, Marie Viskocil, Rosalie, s. Miriam Joseph iz reda Dominikank v Adrianu, Mich, Pat Sammons ter že pok. Mat-thevva in Cvrila, 32-krat stara mati, 51-krat prastara mati, 2-krat pra-prastara mati, sestra Antonije Zakrajšek ter že pok. Franka, Josepha, Johna, Rose Bartol in Marie Hočevar, članica društva Kraljica Miru št. 24 ADZ, sv. Jožefa št. 146 KSKJ in Blessed Sacrament Soc. pri Sv. Lovrencu. Ga. Lekan je bila teta beograjskega nadškofa dr. Franca Perkota. Pogreb bo iz Fortunovega pogrebnega zavoda, 5316 Fleet Ave., jutri, v soboto, v cerkev sv. Lovrenca dop. ob 10., kjer bo sv. mašo daroval škof A. Edward Pevec, nato na Kalvarijo. Na mrtvaškem odru bo danes, v petek, od 2. do 9. zvečer. Darovi v pokojničin spomin Marianist Community ali Dominican Order bodo s hvaležnostjo sprejeti.

Mary Pucell in Louisa, teta, zaposlena do svoje upokojitve pri General Electric Co., članica društva sv. Ane št. 150 KSKJ in Kluba slov. upokojencev v Nevburgu in Maple Hts. Pogreb bo iz Fortunovega zavoda na 5316 Fleet Ave. danes, v petek, v cerkev sv. Lovrenca dop. ob 9.30 in od tam na Kalvarijo.

Še o papeški okrožnici
V drugem delu enciklike Solicitude rei socialis papeža Janeza Pavla II. se njena vsebina premakne iz dotedanjega sekularnega, svetnega opisovanja gospodarskega in socialnega stanja na zemlji na gladino cerkvene, to je duhovne, teološke narave. Papež to sam ugotovi z naslednjimi besedami: »V dokumentu pastoralne narave, kakršen je ta, bi bila analiza, omejena izključno na ekonomsko in politično področje podrazvoja (in mutatis mutandis, tako imenovanega super razvoja) povsem nepopolna.«
O	tem super razvoju govori sv. oče v prejšnjem odstavku in ugotovi, da obenem z mizerijo podrazvoja, ki je nesprejemljiv, najdemo tudi neko obliko super razvoja, prav tako odklonilne narave, ker tako kot prvi nasprotuje dobremu in resnični sreči. Obstaja pa iz pretiranega dosegljivosti vseh materialnih dobrin gotovim socialnim skupinam, kar ljudi napravi sužnje »imetja« in takojšnjega uživanja, to pa z nobenim drugim obzorjem kot s pomnoževanjem imetja in stalnim nadomeščanjem tega, kar že imajo z novim, še boljšim.
Važno je ugotoviti, nadaljuje papež, da se v svetu, razdeljenemu v bloke, ki jih pogojujejo toge ideologije in se uveljavljajo namesto medsebojne odvisnosti in solidarnosti različne oblike imperializma ne more roditi kaj drugega kot »struktura greha«. Te strukture so zakoreninjene v osebnem grehu in so zatorej vedno spojene s konkretnimi akti posameznikov, ki te strukture uvajajo, jih konsolidirajo in jih tako napravijo za težko odstranljive. Na ta način rastejo močneje, se širijo in postanejo izvor drugim grehom, ki vplivajo na človeško ravnanje. »Greh« in »zgradba greha« se redko uporablja pri reševanju zadev sodobnega sveta. Toda ne more se globoko razumeti realnost, s katero se soočamo, če ne damo imena korenini zla, ki nas prizadeva.
Splošna analiza, po svoji naravi religiozna, nam pokaže ravnanje in akcije človeka, ki so nasprotne volji Boga in blagru bližnjega, od katerih sta dve zelo tipični in sta bili že imenovani, namreč neomejeno pehanje za dobičkom na eni, in žeja po prav tako neomejeni oblasti in moči za zasu-žnjenje drugih na drugi strani. To je absolutnost Človekovega ravnanjaz vsemi možnimi posledicami. Solidarnost pa, ki se tu predlaga, pomeni pot k miru in istočasno k razvoju. Kajti svetovni mir je nepojmljiv, dokler voditelji sveta ne priznajo medsebojne odvisnosti, katera pa zahteva opustitev politike blokov, odpravo vseh oblik ekonomskega, vojaškega in političnega imperializma in pretvorbo medsebojnega nezaupanja v aktivno sodelovanje.
Cerkev ne more nuditi tehničnih pripomočkov za rešitev podrazvoja kot takega, niti ne predlaga ekonomskih in političnih sistemov ali programov, in tudi ne kaže podpore za enega ali drugega, pod pogojem seveda, da je človekovo dostojanstvo primerno spoštovano in uživa napredovanje, ter da je Cerkvi omogočeno izvrševati svoje poslanstvo na svetu. Njen socialni nauk pa ni »tretja ali srednja pot« med
Mladinski zbor in orkester župnije	verskih in narodnih pesmi, v soboto 9.

PRISEGA O POLNOČI
CLEVELAND, O. — Znano je, da ima LILIJA lepo število rednih obiskovalcev njenih odrskih prireditev, ki zvesto in z zanimanjem sledijo njenemu delu. Tudi to sezono bo LILIJA zadovoljila svoje iskrene prijatelje ko pripravlja igro, po kateri je bilo več povpraševanja, to je drama »Prisega o polnoči«, ki bo podana, kot običajno, na odru Slovenskega doma na Holmes Ave. ta tiho nedeljo, 20. marca 1988, ob 3.30 popoldne. Lilijini igralci se v režiji Ivana Jakomina z vso resnostjo pripravljajo, da bo igra res pravi kulturni užitek. Igre, del naše narodne dediščine, postajajo prava redkost, pa ravno zato napolnimo ta tiho nedeljo dvorano Slovenskega doma v dokaz, da nam je ta še pri srcu, istočasno se bomo za nekaj časa potopili v »stare dobre čase«. Ne bomo razočarani! S svojo navzočnostjo bomo dali tudi priznanje tem požrtvovalnim igralcem in igralkam, ki se trudijo za ohranitev te dediščine ter jim vlili novega poguma za nadaljnje delo. Malo po misijonskem svetu
CLEVELAND, O. - Je še nekaj tednov ko kosila Misijonske Znamkarske Akcije, vendar vstopnice za kosilo so že na razpolago. Ce se še niste odločili, kaj bi poleg posta še naredili dobrega, pa vzemite ponujeno vstopnico. Ker se je število misijonarjev zvišalo, smo dvignili ceno kosilu za $1.-, torej na $7.- za odrasle. Upamo, da razumete, da ves čisti dobiček oddamo v glavno blagajno. Da so stroški manjši, posamezni sodelavci veliko prispevajo, a niso nikjer napisani. Tudi vse delo pri pripravi in pospravi je brez kakega plačila. Zares dobro delo!

Pri nas v Botswani sta trenutno v ospredju dve stvarnosti: suša in napovedan obisk sv. Očeta. — Za nami je sedem (bibličnih) let neusmiljene suše; pobrala je na stotisoče glav živine, ki je glavni dohodek večine naših ljudi; spremenila ogromne predele že itak suhe savane v puščavo ter reducirala podeželsko ljudstvo v skrajno siromaštvo. Ti se preživljajo z mesečnimi obroki uvožene koruzne ovsene moke in olja ter mleka v prahu za otroke, ki jih državne in dobrodelne cerkvene ustanove skušamo čim vestnejše razdeliti. Poleg tega si prizadevamo organizirati razna dela, kot popravljanje poti, kopanje jezov itd., da ljudje dobijo vsaj malo denarja za najnujnejše
liberalnim kapitalizmom in marksističnim kolektivizmom, ampak ima svojo lastno kategorijo, ki ni nikaka ideologija; je le točna formulacija zaključkov skrbne refleksije zamotanih stvarnosti človeške eksistence v družbi in v mednarodnem redu, vse to pa v luči vere in cerkvene tradicije. Glavni namen Cerkve je tolmačenje teh stvarnosti, njihovo ujemanje z evangeljskim naukom o človeku in njegovem namenu, ki je istočasno tuzemski in transcendentni. To pa ni nobena ideologija, marveč teologija, v prvi vrsti moralna teologija.
Po teh razjasnitvah se papež spet loti pomanjkljivosti realnega sveta našega časa. Mednarodni trgovski sistem diskriminira glede proizvodov dežel v razvoju in ovira proiz-

potrebe. Seveda ni dovolj dela za vse, treba se je vrstiti, tako, da se tudi denarno pomoč čim boljše razdeli na vse potrebne. Vprašujemo se, sami sebe in tudi našega Boga, če je suša res »za nami«, kajti smo šele na začetku deževne dobe, ki se ne obeta kaj dobro. Vendar zaupamo v Boga — delamo in molimo...
Drugi napovedan dogodek je veselejši, oživljajoči. Nas je le peščica katoličanov, le ena škofija in se zato počutimo Še bolj »počaščene«, da si sv. Oče privošči čas tudi za nas. A prav zato, ker nas je malo, smo skoraj vsi angažirani v pripravljalnih komisijah, nekateri celo na dveh ali treh in to vse poleg našega vsakdanjega dela. Največ poudarka je seveda na duhovni obnovi. Vsak mesec imamo posebn0 temo, v katero se skušamo P°' globiti z molitvijo in tudi de' lom. Pri vsem tem vemo, da je i On, ki da rasti in mu zato z veseljem zaupamo vse naše delo.
Verjetno bo v naši deželi ve katoličanov iz sosednje Južne Afrike kot iz Botswane (ker sv. Oče ne bo obiskal J.A.)> a to nas ne moti — Botswana J prostrana dežela in vedno ou prta za goste in vse ljudi dobre volje.
Skoraj leto dni je že, odk^ sem se preselila iž Serove našo prestolnico Gaborone’ kjer delam na škofiji in vodi socialno-razvojni aspekt P® storalnega dela. Seveda se zelo malo v mestu, ker na dežela je prostrana, razdal ogromne in župnije in P0^

Po skoraj dveh letih zatišja, ko v Sloveniji ni bilo političnih sodnih procesov, se je te dni spet zgodilo! Tokrat je prišla direktiva za sodne pregone iz Beograda, ker je slovenski javni tožilec postal za zvezne organe pregona »nezanesljiv«. Potem, ko se je proces proti magistru Tomažu Mastnaku dokaj burkaško končal z njegovo oprostitvijo, se slovensko tožilstvo ni več hotelo smešiti. Zato pa je zarohnela beograjska zvezna stalinistična maši-nerija.
Gre za dva nepodpisana članka v ljubljanski Mladini in komentar znanega publicista Andreja Novaka, ki je bil objavljen v Teleksu, z naslovom generali in generacije. V tem članku naj bi Novak sramotil in omalovaževal vlogo jugoslovanske vojske, v obeh člankih v Mladini pa naj bi njuna avtorja sramotila in žalila zveznega obrambnega ministra, admirala Branka Mamula. Za ta dva članka je obtožen odgovorni urednik Mladine, Franci Zavrl.

stvo Jugoslavije, ki je naj višji državni organ in obenem tudi kolektivni vrhovni poveljnik vojske, je na svoji seji »obsodilo« omenjene tri članke, češ da hočejo diskreditirati jugoslovansko armado in oslabiti njeno nenadomestljivo o-brambno vlogo ter da žalijo visokega zveznega funkcionarja (obrambnega ministra). Nato je zvezni javni tožilec izdal ukaz ljubljanskemu tožilcu (in s tem zaobšel slovenskega), naj vloži obtožne predloge proti Andreju Novaku in Franciju Zavrlu.
Obtožna predloga sta dobesedno prepisana »obsodba« predsedstva Jugoslavije. Gre torej za nenavaden poskus pritiska politike na domnevno neodvisnost jugoslovanskega sodstva. Pri tem je značilna še ena podrobnost: obtožena časnikarja sta zvedela, da sta obtožena, iz beograjskih časopisov, nato pa še iz slovenskih, ki so vesti povzeli po beograjskih. Nato sta obtožne predloge tudi zares dobila.
Ob tej tožilski burki lahko samo ugotovimo, da je predloge za obtožbo izdalo poveljstvo vojske, oziroma predsedstvo SFRJ, kot vrhovni poveljnik vojske, tožilec pa je v tem primeru (kot še v prenekate-rih) le lutka v rokah politike in vojske.
In kaj je bilo tako nevarnega v omenjenih člankih? V Mladini se je avtor ali avtorji, zgražal nad obiskom Branka Mamula v Etiopiji, češ naša miroljubna Jugoslavija prodaja lačnim Etiopcem orožje, medtem ko militantni Zahod

Nesreča letala JAT na
Vesti sicer niso nove. Do nesreče je prišlo 27. februarja in so o njem poročale tiskovne agencije. Vendar so poročila poudarjala, da je šlo za turško letalo ali za letalo, ki ga je imela v najem turška čarterska družba Talia. Letalo pa je bilo dejansko boeing 727, last JAT, piloti in ostali člani posadke z izjemo dveh britanskih stevardesov, so bili Jugoslovani in sicer večinoma iz Srbije. Slovencev med njimi ni bilo. Ostalih šest žrtev je bilo turškega rodu.
Nesreča se je zgodila 18 kilometrov severno od letališča Erdžan (Timbu), na ozemlju tako imenovane Turške republike Severni Ciper. Letalo, ki se je zaletelo v 950 metrov visok hrib, se je prelomilo na dvoje, je poročala agencija Tanjug.

najela čarterska družba Talija iz Istanbula. V Erdžan je poletelo iz Istanbula, nato pa naj bi s Severnega Cipra skupino finskih turistov odpeljalo v Helsinke.
Letališče nima radarja, ampak samo sistem za radijsko upravljanje. Reševalne ekipe so našle obe črni skrinjici. V Nikoziji, glavnem mestu Cipra, menijo, da je letalo strmoglavilo zaradi premajhne višine. Vreme je bilo oblačno.
Kontrola letališča Erdžan, ki mednarodno ni priznano, je bila do zadnjega trenutka v stiku s posadko Jalovega letala. Zaenkrat še ni jasno, zakaj je bilo letalo za 1000 metrov niže od predpisane višine. Če bi letelo le nekaj metrov više, bi se izognilo trčenju s hribom.
Sedem ubitih Jugoslovanov so bili: kapetan Čedomir Ra-kič (r. 1939), kapetan Mladen-
ko Glišič (1935), kopilot Miroslav Šišovič-Šiša (1954), kopilot Marko Prokopijevič-Proka (1954), inženir letalec Zdravko Stanisavljevič (1946), inženir letalec Vladimir Tomič (1946), mehanik Milenko Marič (1944).
Gre za najhujšo nesrečo jugoslovanskega letala od 1. decembra 1981, ko je letalo lnex-Adria treščilo v goro San Pietro pri Ajacciu na Korziki. Življenje je takrat izgubilo 180 ljudi, skoro vsi so bili Slovenci. Uradna francoska preiskovalna komisija (Korzika namreč pripada Franciji) je sporočila, da je bila vzrok za nesrečo nepazljivost posadke v težavnih atmosferskih razmerah. Letalo je bilo DC-9 in je poletelo z brniškega letališča, treščilo pa v 1365 metrov visoko goro.

Kaj pravi ameriški ambasador
Rekordna trgovinska menjava
(V sobotni prilogi ljubljanskega Dela 20. feb. 1988 je izšlo poročilo o obisku veleposlanika ZDA Johna Scanlana v Slovenijo. Poročilo posredujemo bralcem, ker gotovo kaže trenutno razpoloženje State Departmenta in s tem ameriške vlade do Jugoslavije. Za nas, ki se zanimamo za proces politične demokratizacije v Sloveniji in Jugoslaviji, so nekatere Scanlanove trditve oz. pogledi nezadovoljivi, ponovno pa smo objavili izjave State Departmenta, ki kažejo, da za ZDA gre predvsem za politično stabilnost v Jugoslaviji, tudi pod komunističnim sistemom, bolj malo se kaže zanimanje za politično demokratizacijo z negotovostmi, ki bi bile (so) s takim razvojem nujno povezane.
Videli boste, da veleposlanik govori o obisku v Sloveniji neke trgovinske misije iz Clevelanda, ki jo bo vodil kong. Dennis Eckart. Pri A D nismo bili do tega pisanja nič informirani, tudi nisem opazil nobenega poročila v drugem našem slovenskem listu. Izgle-da torej, da je bila glede slovenske skupnosti ta misija pripravljena v precejšnji tajnosti. Pozanimali se bomo. Ur.)
»Jugoslavija mi je pri srcu od prvega trenutka, ko sem jo leta 1955 spoznal,« je povzel ob koncu posebnega razgovora za Delo ameriški veleposlanik v Beogradu John Scanlan, ko je bil minuli teden na uradnem
obisku v Sloveniji.
Pojasnjujoč namen obiska v Ljubljani, kamor seje prvotno namenil zaradi neke ameriške razstave v Cankarjevem domu, je poudaril, da se je za ta obisk zdaj odločil predvsem zaradi tega, ker je minilo že skoraj leto, odkar se je zadnjič lahko neposredno pogovarjal z vodilnimi predstavniki Slovenije, zlasti kar zadeva gospodarske in trgovinske odnose kot tudi reprogramiranje jugoslovanskih dolgov. »Ker je vaša dežela zdaj tako močno decentralizirana, je za nas nemogoče, da bi razumeli, kaj so tekoči politično-ekonomski pogledi in tokovi, ne da bi obiskali tudi posamezne republike.«
Ko je omenil zadovoljstvo nad razgovori v Ljubljani, pa je o siceršnjem stanju gospodarskih odnosov med ZDA in Jugoslavijo sodil, da smo v minulem letu dosegli rekord glede vzajemne trgovinske menjave. »Največji skok je bil storjen prav v jugoslovanskem izvozu v ZDA, povečal pa se je tudi uvoz iz ZDA v Jugoslavijo. Vsekakor je to premik, ki ga moramo na obeh straneh še vzpodbujati. Pri tem povečanju menjave, zlasti še pri vašem izvozu v ZDA, so pomemben odstotek zvišanja prispevali prav slovenski izdelki. To velja predvsem za izvoz pohištva, montažnih hiš, obutve, nakita in tekstila; ne smem pa pozabiti tudi izvoznikov smuči
Še o papeški okrožnici
(Nadaljevanje s str. 2) vodnjo surovin. Produkti, izgotovljeni v deželah s poceni delavno silo se prodajajo v razvitih deželah s pretiranimi profiti, in ta praksa ne pozna nobene meje. Denarni in finančni sistem na svetu preveč niha pri menjalni vrednosti in obrestni meri, kar otežuje odplačevanje dolgov revnih narodov. Ogromni tehnološki napredek povzroča velike probleme v mednarodni izmenjavi; tehnološko zaostalim državam se zanikajo dobave potrebnih tehnoloških iznajdb ali pa se jim prodaja zastarela roba.
Mednarodne organizacije izkazujejo v svojih operativnih metodah in dragem obratovanju ter slabi učinkovitosti potrebo po skrbni reviziji in izboljšanju. Taka delikatna naloga pa se ne more uspešno izvesti brez sodelovanja vseh prizadetih, tudi takih, ki sedaj z njimi manipulirajo v svojo korist.
Papež zaključi svojo okrožnico s povsem religiozno noto. Pravi namreč, da Cerkev dobro ve, da noben časovni napredek ne zdrži primera s Kraljestvom Boga; vsi dosežki samo obsevajo in predvidevajo ono Kraljestvo, ki ga pričakujemo ob dopolnitvi časa, ob koncu zgodovine, ko Gospod spet pride. Vendar to pričakovanje nikakor ne more biti opravičilo za pomanjkanje smisla za ljudi, ki trpijo revščino v svojih konkretnih osebnih situacijah in v svojem socialnem, nacionalnem in mednarodnem življenju.
Ko bi piscu tega komentarja bilo dovoljeno, da v zvezi z okrožnico izrazi svojo misel, kaj v nji pogreša, bi to misel formuliral na sledeči način: Okrožnica bi v svoji svetovni veljavi in učinkovitosti znatno pridobila, če bi se papež na en ali drug način dotaknil vprašanja o graditvi mostov prek prepada, ki sedaj ločuje obe svetovni velesili. Kdo in kako naj išče stikov, ki bi vodili do zaželenega sodelovanja dveh tako različnih sistemov kot sta demokracija in absolutizem? In ki bi vzpostavil medsebojno zaupanje? In omogočil sodelovanje vsaj na tistih področjih, kjer se ideološka sovražnost more eliminirati za skupne načrte v prid svetovni blaginji.
To je samo moja misel, ki je morda neostvarljiva. Morda niti vredna, da bi se poskusila?

Na dodatno vprašanje, kako pa je z ameriškimi ugodnostmi v zvezi z jugoslovanskim programom za izvoz pohištva AKA, v odgovoru sicer posebnih carinskih olajšav ni napovedal, je pa naredil poklon prodornosti naših izvoznikov pohištva.
»Mislim da je bil jugoslovanski izvoz pohištva v ZDA
že doslej dokaj velik, kar pomeni, da ste bili tržno uspešni, ne da bi bili deležni prednosti za stole in pohištvo. Se pravi, da ste pač izgubili okrog 5%. A važno je, da ste spremenili kategorijo stolov in pohištva. Nedavno je pa ameriška vlada odločila, da poslej tudi tako-imenovani štirje tigri azijskega izvoza, Tajvan, Koreja, Singapur in Hongkong, ne potrebujejo nobene zaščite več. Tako preferanc nasploh ne bo več in najbrž bo to tudi za Jugoslavijo glede izvoza na raznih področjih zdaj lažje, ker ne bo več tolikšne azijske konkurence.«
Glede izvoza avtomobilov jugo v ZDA pa je veleposlanik Scanlan odvrnil, da gredo še naprej dobro v promet. »Vem, da precej sestavnih delov za ta vozila prihaja tudi iz Slovenije,« je dodal. »Lani je Jugoslavija izvozila v ZDA jugov za okrog 150 milijonov dolarjev, v letošnjem letu pa naj bi ta izvoz dosegel vrednost okrog 200 milijonov dolarjev,
upoštevaje tudi to, da bo šlo tokrat za nove, nekoliko dražje modele.«
Pozneje je povedal, da najnovejših ameriških statistik o celotnem gospodarskem prometu med ZDA in SFRJ v letu 1987 še nima, da pa jugoslovanske statistike govorijo o poldrugi milijardi dolarjev. »Lahko si obetamo, da bomo do leta 1990 dosegli menjavo v višini dveh milijard dolarjev.« Scanlan o političnih odnosih med ZDA in Jugoslavijo
Ameriški diplomat je na vprašanje, če so se torej odnosi med državama, odkar je na položaju v Beogradu, še izboljšali, je vljudnostno sicer menil, da ne bi govoril, da so še boljši, so pa — dobri. »In največji napredek smo storili predvsem na gospodarskem področju. Jugoslavija je pomemben trgovinski partner ZDA in odkar sem veleposlanik v Beogradu, smo se kot trgovski partner s petega mesta (dalje na str. 5)
“Bojim se prijaviti pri INS, ker morda nisem upravičen.”
Nekateri mislijo, da nima smisla prositi za legalizacijo. Prispeli so sem pred januarjem 1982, a so mnenja, da zaradi enega ali drugega vzroka, bo njihova prošnja morda zavrnjena. Tako, bojijo se prijaviti pri INS.
Ako je to vaša situacija, naprošeni ste, da predno se odločite, ali se prijaviti ali se ne prijaviti, se posvetujete pri eni od cerkev ali prostovoljnih organizacij, pooblaščenih od INS, da vam pomagajo. Pri njih boste našli kvalificirane svetovalce, ki so seznanjeni z vsemi členi Zakona, ki bi morda pomagali pri vaši zadevi. Zgolj posvetovanje z enim teh organizacij vas ne no na nobeno stvar obvezalo. In tudi ni nobene nevarnosti za vas ali za vašo družino, kajti, po zakonu, mora ostati vsa informacija, ki jo vi posredujete, v najstrožji tajnosti.
V. Nekoč sem bil aretiran in obsojen. Ali sem zaradi tega izključen?
O.	Ne obvezno. V zakonu so členi, ki bi se vas zadevali v slučaju, da ste bili kdaj aretirani in obsojeni. Prostovoljne organizacije vam lahko svetujejo glede specifičnosti vašega primera.
V • Mislim, da nimam vseh dokumentov, ki jih INS zahteva. Kaj naj storim?
O. Prosite za pomoč pri prostovoljni organizaciji. Možno je, da z dokazi, ki jih že imate, ki potrjujejo vaše neprekinjeno bivanje v ZDA, vam bodo mogli pomagati pri vlaganju uspešne prošnje. In če ne, vas bodo seznanili, kako lahko pridete do dokazov, ki jih potrebujete.
V. Ali lahko povzročam težave za mojo družino, ako jo omenjam v svoji prošnji?
O. Absolutno ne! Lahko odgovorite na vsa vprašanja v formularju brez bojazni. Po zakonu, vsa resnična informacija, ki jo posredujete, ne more biti pozneje uporabljena proti vam ali proti članom vaše družine. Dalje, vaše posvetovanje s prostovoljno organizacijo je obdržano v strogi tajnosti.
V. Kje bom našel cerkev ali prostovoljno organizacijo, ki mi bo svetovala?
O. Vprašajte za seznem prostovoljnih organizacij pri vsakem INS uradu za legalizacijo. Ali pa pokličite brezplačno na 1-800-777-7000 in vprašajte za kategorijo štev. 7.
Predno se odločite, da se ne boste prijavili, je važno, da ste popolnoma na jasnem. Posvetujte o vašem primeru s kvalificiranim svetovalcem in ne zamudite te priložnosti legalizacije.

pomaknili na četrto: takoj za Sovjetsko zvezo, ZR Nemčijo in Italijo.«
Seveda pa pogovor ni mogel mimo naših zunanjih dolgov. »Očitno med vsemi gospodarskimi vprašanji pri vas najbolj Škriplje okrog reprogramiranja dolgov«, je povzel Scan-lan. »Predstavniki Mednarodnega denarnega sklada so v Beogradu in bilo bi zelo važno, da bi se Jugoslavija čim prej Pogodila za nov stand-by sporazum z IMF, hkrati pa sem Prepričan, da bi se, če bi se zgodilo prvo, dokaj hitro lahko dogovorili tudi s komercialnimi bankami in upniškimi vladami. To bi tudi olajšalo tekoče servisne obremenitve s 450/0 na 250/0.
Očitno ostaja še vedno odprto tudi vprašanje investiranje tujega kapitala v Jugoslaviji. John Scanlan je v odgovoru menil, da je bilo precej ameriških interesentov za taka vlaganja v Jugoslaviji, zlasti v hirizem in hotelske objekte. Vendar pa vse doslej v Jugo-slaviji še ni prožnejših zakonskih predpisov glede mešanih Podjetij, lastništva in udeležbe v vodenju takih podjetij. »Veliko je bilo govorjenega, a 'nalo storjenega. Ameriški poslovneži so pa taki kot vsi dru-8i. ki vlagajo tja, kjer imajo najbolj ustrezne razmere, in če ni, vložijo svoja sredstva Pač kje drugje, čeravno bi bili 'z raznih razlogov bolj zainte-resirani za investiranje v Jugo-s*aviji.«

nekdanjega guvernerja v državi Ohio, Franka Lauscheta. Slovenci v ZDA pa se vidno uveljavljajo tudi v svobodnih poklicih in kot poslovneži, torej podobno kot Slovenci v Jugoslaviji.«
Ker letos mineva 90 let od rojstva pokojnega velikega ameriškega pisatelja slovenskega rodu Louisa Adamiča, sem seveda besedo napeljal tudi nanj, še posebej v zvezi z njegovo idejo, ki jo je nakazal v naslovu knjige The Nation of Nations.
»Louis Adamič je bil v ZDA vsekakor zelo vpliven, zlasti v štiridesetih in petdesetih letih, ko je Američanom pomagal, da so lahko razumeli in ocenili, kaj je Jugoslavija kot narod narodov in kaj pomeni to tudi za ZDA. Spominjam se, da je tudi name osebno svoj čas Louis Adamič zelo vplival. Kot univerzitetnega študenta po vojni me je Jugoslavija začela močno zanimati. Študiral sem tudi srbohrvaščino, hkrati pa sem bil univerzitetni inštruktor in sem po diplomi pripravljal skupino 11 študentov, ki naj bi za eno poletje šli preučevati razmere v Jugoslavijo. Vsak med njimi je imel svoj projekt. Neko dekle iz Minnesote, pri kateri so doma govorili slovensko, je tako v Ljubljani študirala sodobno slovensko književnost. Veleposlanik Scanlan je seveda obudil spomin tudi na to, da je 1955. leta kot podiplomski študent v ameriškem veleposlaništvu v Beogradu uspešno opravil tudi pismeni izpit za sprejem v diplomatsko službo ZDA, tako da si je že tedaj zaželel, da bi se v Jugoslavijo nekoč vrnil kot veleposlanik.
»Človek v diplomatski službi si mora sicer prizadevati, da bi bil v svojem poklicu vselej objektiven, a kot človek si ne moreš pomagati, da ne bi bil kdaj tudi subjektiven. Zase lahko rečem, da sem imel srečo, saj sem dobršen del svoje diplomatske kariere prebil v dveh deželah, ki ju imam posebno rad — na Poljskem in v Jugoslaviji.

V ljubljanskem tedniku Teleks pa je Andrej Novak v uvodnem komentarju ošvrknil paternalistični odnos jugoslovanskih generalov do ljudstva ter se obregnil ob nesodobnost jugoslovanske vojske, kljub njeni tehnični dobri opremljenosti in pri tem izpeljal tudi sklep, da prav to povzroča zlasti v Sloveniji odpor do take in tako organizirane vojske, ki jo slovenska mladina ne čuti kot svojo obrambno silo, ampak prej kot okupatorsko, saj je v njej manj kot tri odstotke slovenskih častnikov. Te ugotovitve pa so bile, po oceni vojaškega vrha, sramotitev armade in zmanjševanje njene obrambne moči (!). (Tekst spornega članka A. Novaka bomo ponatisnili v celoti v A.D. prihodnji torek. Pričakovati je sicer, da obtožena časnikarja ne bosta kaznovana, saj se slovenska politika še kar uspešno postavlja po robu zveznim stalinističnim pritiskom. Kljub temu pa se je bati, da ob takem razvoju dogodkov nekega dne vojska preprosto vzame stvari v svoje roke. Pri čemer sploh ni nujno, da bo prišlo do klasičnega državnega udara. Lahko bo prišlo le do ideološkega prevrata, kakršen je bil tisti Titov, leta 1971.
Zato zaenkrat res ni jasno, kdo dejansko upravlja v tej dr-
žavi, še manj pa kdo bo vladal in kdo bo kdo v bližnji prihodnosti.

Anna Praček Krasna, povratnica iz ZDA, umrla v Ljubljani
Iz chicaške Prosvete zvemo, da je v sredo, 2. marca, v bolnišnici v Ljubljani umrla Anna Praček Krasna, pred svojo vrnitvijo v Slovenijo lastnica in urednica v New Yorku izhajajočega lista Glas Naroda. Bila je ves in nekritično predana sedanjemu režimu, in je služila Slovenski izseljenski matici, ki ji je pomagala z objavo knjižnih del, ki so sicer kar precej zanimiva kot pričevanje o življenju Slovencev v Ameriki in bodo morali biti z njimi seznanjeni vsi, ki se želijo ukvarjati s prisotnostjo Slovencev v Ameriki. Umrla je v starosti 87 let.
Rojena je bila 30. novembra 1900 v vasi Dolga poljana v Sloveniji, po vrnitvi v Slovenijo po ukinitvi Glasa Naroda pa je živela v Ajdovščini na Primorskem in od časa do časa prispevala v Prosveto, Rodno grudo in Slovenski koledar. Slednji dve sta publikaciji SIM v Ljubljani.
Vsekakor je bila zaslužna društvena in prosvetna delavka, ki je zapustila svoj pečat predvsem na tako imenovani »napredni« del ameriške slovenske skupnosti. Tudi je bila med tistimi, ki so bili tesno povezani s pisateljem Louisom Adamičem pred, med in po 2. svetovni vojni.

In 1988, Circle 2 will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the youth circle movement. Circle 2 is happy to be the first circle to celebrate this outstanding achievement. Last year was one of the best for Circle 2 and its Slovenian Junior Chorus and we are looking forward to the next 50.
To kickoff our special year, Circle 2 is sponsoring Super Button Box Bash 6 on Sunday, April 10 in both halls of Slovenian Society Home, Recher Avenue, Euclid, Ohio. The big observance with a banquet and reunion will be held in the Fall.
We invite you to join us at the
Bash because we have a lot of new ideas to offer. Circle 2 will introduce a Button Box Cook Book. Karen Alich, one of our mothers, was the inspiration and chairman of the committee that got this unique book off the ground. The Cook Book features the favorite recipes of 12 button box clubs and Circle 2 parents and children. In addition, the book has the photographs and addresses of the button box clubs that participated.
The Circle has also been invited to a first for us. The chorus performed at the Cleveland Home and Flower Show at the Downtown Convention Center.
With the New Year, the Circle elected new officers. They
are by far the youngest, but not lacking in talent. The officers for 1988 are Bob Dolgan, president; Jeff Lapuh, vice president; Stacey Meden, attendance secretary; Mark Tomsic, recording secretary; Matt Tomsic, treasurer; and Wendy Lapuh, historian. Their goal is to have at least one activity per month for the whole family to participate.
In January we held a bowling party. Everyone enjoyed it except those who bowled on the alley with the lazy automatic pinsetter.

More activities are planned by some of the alumni of Circle 2. This year is also the 20th anniversary of Circle 2’s first concert tour to Slovenia. The Circle Christmas Party was held on December 29. Two members received membership awards. Amy Stislow received a silver bracelet for ten years as a member of the Circle. (Beverly) Kuhar both of Joliet; two nieces, Catherine Mrs. Thomas Howard of Joliet and Susan Fenner of Florida; three nephews; Dr. Joseph E. (Betty) Kuhar of California; Judge Ludwig J. (Gerri) Kuhar of Joliet and David (Ann) Kuhar of Wheaton.
Born in Joliet; lifelong resident. Preceded by his parents, Frank and Mary (nee Teran, Gospodaric, Kuhar); two brothers, Joseph and Willard Kuhar. He was educated at St. Joseph School, Joliet. Attended business school.
At 22 was the first youngest Mayor in the United States in the Village of Rockdale from 1918-1922. Director of U.S. Census of Will County and surrounding counties in the year 1930. Member of the Supreme Finance Committee of the American Slovenian Catholic Union KSKJ for 44 years.
Chairman of the Cancer Drive in Will County. Honorary member of St. Joseph Hospital Board. Received Honorary Doctorate Degree from Lewis College. Also one of the founders of Lewis University. Member of the Joliet Elks; Loyal Order of Moose; Joliet Rivals Club; Knights of Columbus and Irving A.C. Chairman of the March of Dimes Drive; Unico’s Citizen of the Year; Notre Dame Club Joliet Man of the Year. Was active in the affairs of St. Joseph Church, Joliet, St Mary’s Nativity Church, Joliet, and St. Joseph Church, Rockdale. He was a Philanthropist. Active in the Republican Party for many years. Was honored in the Village of Rockdale in 1980. Involved in the real estate and insurance business. Was owner and operator of the Woodruff Hotel and retired from ownership of the Illinois Wine and Liquor Co. in 1976.

Services for Albert A. Moro, a retired machinist for the Warner and Swasey Co. were held on Saturday, March 5 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church. Mr. Moro died March 2 at St. Vincent Charity Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born September 15, 1914 in Cleveland. He was a member of the Holmes Avenue Pensioners, St. Jerome’s Senior Citizens Group and a member of KSKJ Lodge No. 169. Mr. Moro was also an avid bowler who was currently bowling in three seniors leagues. He retired in 1977 after 47 years with Warner and Swasey.
Survivors are his wife, Faye M. (Bittenc); daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elaine) Anderson of Wickliffe and Mrs. Frank (Marion) Bokausek of Mentor-on-the-Lake; sister Albina Bittenc of East Cleveland; and three grandchildren.

Julia Rožnik (nee Rozman), 90, died early Saturday morning, March 5th at Euclid General Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Frank Rožnik and Frank Doberdruk (dec.); the mother of Frank and Alfred Doberdruk and the late Henry Rožnik; the grandmother of six; and the great-grandmother of eight. One brother and six sisters are all deceased.
She was a member of the Waterloo Pensioners, the American Mutual Life Association Lodge 6, and the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Jerome’s Church.
She was born in Trebnje, Slovenia on Feb. 16, 1898. The Funeral Mass was Monday, March 7 at St. Jerome Church at 10 a.m. Interment at All Souls Cemetery. Grdina Funeral Home, 17010 Lake Shore Blvd., handled the funeral arrangements.

Joseph H. Mendoza, 70, died Saturday morning, March 5th at Richmond Heights General Hospital.
He was the husband of Alice F. (nee Sluga); the father of Mrs. Clint (Mary Ann) Nagle
of California, Richard, and Katherine Semo; the grandfather of Michelle Nagle and Jeffrey Blaha; and the brother of Mrs. Harold (Rose) Nelson of California, Mrs. William (Louise) Vierra (Calif.), and the late Frances Pontes.
He was a member of KSKJ Lodge No. 169. He was a retired custodial worker for the Mayfield High School. During World War II he served in the Army.

Felix J. Kovacic, 77, died Friday evening, March 4th at Richmond Heights General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was the husband of the late Anne (nee Strebeck); the brother of Mrs. Joseph (Frances) Rolik; Vida Habjan, William Kovacic, Mrs. Chester (Josephine) Mocrski, Dorothy, and the late Albert; an uncle of many; and a great uncle.
He retired from Drenik Distributors in 1972 where he had been employed as a truck driver for more than 25 years.

Joseph F. Perko, Jr., 62, of Euclid died Saturday evening, March 5th, at Euclid General Hospital.
He was the husband of Rose (nee Sokolovich); the father of Linda R. Heaton and Joseph G.; the son of Ivana (Jennie) (nee Drab) and the late Joseph F., Sr.; the grandfather of Joseph O’Neil, Stephen Perko and Michaelynn and Amanda Heaton; and the brother of Mrs. Robert (Jennie) Booth and the late Augustine Perko.
He was a member of Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association No. 27. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a tool and die maker at the Columbia Rubber Mold Co. During World War II he served in the Navy.

Katherine Cicirelli (nee Hot ham), 76, passed away Friday, March 4, in Hillcrest Hospital after a long illness.
Katherine was born in Youngstown and came to Cleveland in 1920. A former resident of the Collinwood area, she lived at her present address on Winchester Ave. for 25 years.
Katherine was the widow of Orlando who died in 1972, the mother of Geraldine (Dr. Frank) Mršnik and Roland (dec.); grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of seven, sister of Marie Riley, John Johnson, Anna Mae Yan, Gunnar Johnson, and Robert Johnson (dec.).
Visitation was at Zele Funeral Home, 452 E. 152 St., Mondy, March 7. Funeral services were held at St. Jerome Church. Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.

Recently, the American Home English page published a list of the many restaurants that are located in the St. Clair Slovenian community in Cleveland.
Since that time, a Chinese restaurant has been scheduled to open soon in the former Sorn’s restaurant location at E. 61 and St. Clair Ave.
Also, a new French cuisine dining establishment has announced they will open soon at the former Erste’s at E. 68 and St. Clair. The owners will also conduct a chef school there. When more information becomes available we will pass that information along to our readers.
Besides these two new restaurants, there is the Mell-O Restaurant-Bar located on E. 72nd between St. Clair and the freeway. We have already dined there, enjoying several excellent lunches at low cost.

Hospitals can be entered. Prisons, old age homes, garrisons not yet. Xmas day festivities are tolerated.
Many obstacles remain. A believer is definitely a second class citizen. It starts in the elementary school where religious pupils are eliminated from any positions in youth organizations, often ridiculed and discriminated against. It continues into university, where religious students will not get into subsidized residence. He can hardly expect to get a scholarship at home or abroad.
The worst discrimination takes place in employment. Administration, education, military is practically closed to the believers. The same rule is applied for any high position in economy. People do know that and it is reflected in statistics: If we take 100 pupils in religious courses, we find 60% of them at Confirmation ceremonies and hardly 20% have religious wedding ceremonies.
Minorities in the USA are much better off and blacks in
South Africa are not much worse, if at all.
Prof. France Bucar, one of the best authorities on the present political system, former partisan and party man says: “The present position of the Church is an unfinished part of the revolution. Party will never accept the equality of the Church in the society. Church must be eliminated or subjugated.” (Truth and Illusion, Maribor, 1986).
Bishop Dr. S. Lenic of Ljubljana in his famous interview in Nova 67/8 Dec. 1987 concurs with Prof. Bucar concluding,
“We can’t be too optimistic and forget that the aim of the party remains as always: to humble the Church, to diminish her influence and slowly to turn people away from the Church and religion. There are some who do insist
that right now is the time for the Slovenian Church to insist on full equality of the believers, as defined in the constitution. Vatican would much more prefer such an uncompromising attitude. This fact came into the open the last time when the new cardinals were nominated. The whole Slovenian nation at that time expected the nomination of the second cardinal in our history. This theory can be substantiated with the situation in Poland. There is no doubt that there is more freedom for religion and more human rights in Poland than in Yugoslavia. Not enough for the Vatican which refuses for this reason only to renew diplomatic relations with Poland.

The owner-chef is formerly from the Aqua-Marine Resort in Avon, Ohio. There is off-street parking, too.
St. Clair Avenue must have the greatest concentration of eating spots in Cleveland.
The avenue also has undergone other changes. Recently, the former Bonca Wallpaper store at E. 60 has been demolished to make way for a parking lot for the St. Clair Auto Parts company. The owner, Dale Lunder, also completely renovated the exterior. This has greatly improved that area’s eye appeal.
And a new business establishment is being installed at the former Mandel’s building at St. Clair near E. 62nd. The new owners have completely remodeled the interior. It is scheduled to open on March 17th.
And Mervar’s Music Mart on E. 69 has completely redone their building after a disasterous fire. At this time they are continuing their record business through the mails only.
The Croatian Book Store at E. 62nd and the Broadview Bank also have cleaned and painted the exteriors of their buildings.
And Tivoli’s Imports at E. 64 and St. Clair has a beautiful interior filled with the latest books, magazines and videos from various parts of Yugoslavia.
The Slovenian National Home on St. Clair looks tremendous with the new Dave’s Florists and the reliable Nosan’s Bakery. They are completely renovating two storefronts where Charity Hospital will have satellite doctor’s offices.
With all these encouraging signs the St. Clair business places are having somewhat of a renaissance. Can it be that downtown’s rebirth is spreading to our community too?

The Story of St
Petersburg, Florida
Evidence that Pinellas Peninsula was inhabited long before the coming of the white man is furnished by the numerous shell mounds which were found in. and near St. Petersburg. Carved shells, weapons made from wood and stone, crude jars and bowls, and numerous other articles have been unearthed along with human skeletons.
Discoveries made recently seem to prove beyond doubt that both Narvaez and DeSoto set foot upon the lower end of Pinellas Peninsula in their exploration of the West Coast of Florida in the sixteenth century. This is based on writings where they describe anchoring near the shore, in the mouth of a bay near the head of which “we saw some habitations of Indians.” The place described apparently was near the Jungle section of St. Petersburg. Excavations made during the winter of 1923—4 on Weedon Island provide convincing proof that at least one of the Spanish explorers must have landed on the island. Many dishes and crocks of Spanish origin as well as Spanish weapons have been unearthed, together with a number of skeletons of white men. The positions of the skeletons indicate that the men must have
Monday, March 21 is the date of the next monthly meeting of the Slovenian American National Art Guild at the Slovenian Society Home, Recher Ave., Euclid, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Guests are invited to join members in the 2nd part of a workshop series centering around paper as a decorative art, a version which has been popular for many centuries.
Participants need only to bring a pair of small sharp scissors. Other material is being furnished by the Art Guild. Refreshments will be served, and there is no charge.
Paper cutting is shared by many heritages, and instructor Frances Babic will show you during the session how to create a personal rendition which could be framed later. Mrs. Babic serves as Program chairperson for the Guild, and has an extensive background of ethnic knowledge combined with a love for the folk arts.

been murdered by the Indians and their bodies thrown together in a heap, and later covered.
The first known settler here was Antonio Maximo. In 1843 Maximo secured a land grant from the United States Government for services he had performed during the Seminole War. He established a “fish ranche” at the lower end of Pinellas Peninsula which is now called Maximo Point. Three years later he was joined by another man named William Bunce. They did a good business supplying Fish to Cuba until their property was destroyed by the hurricane of 1848. After the storm blew out they discovered all their possessions had disappeared with the high waters and they left, never to appear in this section again.
However, a few years later other settlers began coming in. The majority just “squatted”, fencing in a few acres and raising farm products and cattle, and a few started small citrus groves.
The first house was erected by James R. Hay, who came here in 1856. He fenced in a small tract at what is now Lakeview Avenue and Twentieth Street, to truck farm for the Tampa Markets.

The Origami workshop held last month by the Art Guild was most successful and met with enthusiastic approval from the large number of persons who took part. Such individual involvement always seems to be popular when offered by the Art Guild and it finds creative and artistic responses in the people.
On Sunday, March 20 our Slovenian Art Guild will again be a part of the Federation of Slovenian Homes yearly banquet. “Cultures and Arts in the Slovenian Homes:	Its
Growth and Effect” was scheduled to be highlighted in a printed special addition to the American Home newspaper.

St. Petersburg did not play much of a part during the Civil War. The only event of which there is any record was the shelling and destruction of the houses on Big Bayou by the Egmont Key blockading fleet, in February of 1862. The Federals killed hogs, cattle, and poultry, and loaded their boats with syrup, corn, pumpkin, bacon and sweet potatoes. Having accomplished this, the invaders burned the buildings on the farms and killed all the orange trees. When the people returned and saw the damage, they decided to leave the Big Bayou section, fearing more attacks. They found a rowboat which the invaders had overlooked, and proceeded to Tampa, taking a full two days for the trip.
The first settler on the land which is now downtown St. Petersburg was Dr. James Hackney, who bought 600 acres of land from the State at twenty-five cents an acre. He built a home on land at what is now Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue South in 1873, and made extensive improvements, reclaiming the sawgrass ponds and clearing for farms and groves. The Manhattan Hotel now stands on this original homesite.
St. Petersburg is said to have had its beginning in 1875, for it was in that year that General John C. Williams of Detroit, Michigan, first visited the peninsula. He lost no time in acquiring property. He purchased 1,600 acres from the State at an average of one dollar an acre, then returned north to get his family. In 1879 he returned, coming by train to Gainesville and from there to St. Petersburg by covered wagon. The 250 mile trip took him a month to make. After failing to make farming successful, as he had applied northern methods which weren’t suitable to this area, he conceived the idea of making a town here, complete with rail facilities. Meanwhile, Peter Demens, who came to Florida from Russia, had built a narrow-gauge railroad from Lake Monroe to Lake Apopka, and it became the headquarters for the Orange Belt railroad. Demens wanted to extend his railroad to the Gulf, particularly to the palace now called Gulfport. He was unable to secure any property there and one of his brokers made an arrangement with General Williams for 500 acres. Building the railroad was hard, due to lack of financial backing, heavy rains, and yellow fe.er. It was April 1, 1888 before the railroad reached what is now Ninth Street

Many different stories regarding the naming of St. Petersburg have been told, but the one most widely regarded as true is the tale that both General Williams and Peter Demens wanted to name the town they had founded. They couldn’t agree which would have the honor so they drew straws. Demens won, so called the town St. Petersburg, after the Russian city. As consolation, Williams named the first commercial building, the Detroit Hotel, after his birthplace.
Following the birth of the downtown section, General Williams placed some of his property on the market and the Orange Belt Investment Company also opened for business. Both the General and the investment company offered lots for sale on liberal terms, allowing the purchaser nine years in which to pay for them. The only restrictions regarding the use of the lots were that all buildings must be erected on brick or stone piers and be painted.
The Federal census of 1890 showed that St. Petersburg had 273 inhabitants, most of whom lived around Ninth Street. St. Petersburg had started to grew, but its growth at the start was slow. The railroads ran low-rate excursions to St. Petersburg in the summer from other parts of the state and many people came to spend the summer vacations here because it was much cooler, so oddly as it may seem, and St. Petersburg’s first important growth started as a summer resort.
The big freeze of 1894-95 proved a tragedy to thousands of people in Florida, but resulted in good for St. Petersburg. Many of the citrus groves on Pinellas Point survived the low temperature and a number of growers in other parts of the state, who had been frozen out, came here to make a new start. They played an important part in the developing of this city.
In New Orleans at the thirty-sixth annual meeting of the American Medical Society during April, a paper was read saying in part...“Where should a health city be built? Overlooking the deep Gulf of Mexico, with the broad waters of a beautiful bay nearly surrounding it, but with little upon its soil but primal forest, there is a large subpeninsular Point Pinellas, waiting the hand of improvement. It lies in latitude 27 degrees and 42
minutes, and contains, with its adjoining keys about 160,000 acres of land. No marsh surrounds its shores or rests upon its surface; the sweep of its beach is broad and graceful, stretching many miles, and may be improved to an imposing extent. Its average winter temperature is 72 degrees. Those who have carefully surveyed the entire state think it offers the best climate in Florida.” This report was given wide publicity and many physician visited St. Petersburg. It is impossible to estimate the result of all this favorable comment, but it certainly had much bearing on our future growth.
As of April, 1980, the estimated population of St. Petersburg is 246,620, not including the suburbs or Gulf Beaches.

HYLLIS DILLER’S LEMON FRIDGE COOKIES
l/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening i/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed light , brown sugar
1	egg
2	tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1	tablespoon grated lemon pee!
2	cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup chopped nuts
I/4 teaspoon baking soda i/4 teaspoon salt
In large mixer bowl cream butter or margarine, shortening and both sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, lemon juice and peel; mix well. In medium bowl combine re-j ntaining ingredients and stir into creamed mixture. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. Remove from refrigerator and form into two 10-inch rolls on long sheets of Wax paper. Wrap tightly and
refrigerate overnight or place in freezer at least 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400® F. Slice rolls into 1/4-inch slices. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets and cool on wire racks. Makes 5 1/2 dozen. About 60 calories each.
BROCCOLI CHEESE CASSEROLE

1	8-ounce container cottage cheese (l cup)

SPINACH STRATA
1	package (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, thawed
! tablespoon butter or margarine
2	tablespoons finely chopped green onions
11/2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1/4 pound feta cheese, crumbled
3	eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
8 slices white bread
11/2 cups half and half cream
Drain spinach in a colander, pressing out as much liquid as possible with the back of a spoon.
In medium skillet melt butter or margarine over medium-high heat. Add spinach, green onions, dill and parsley; cook, stirring constantly, 5 minutes.
Remove from heat. Stir in crumbled feta cheese, 1 egg, salt and pepper until blended; cool.
Butter bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking dish. Cover bottom with 4 slices bread; spread on cooled spinach mixture. Top with remaining bread.
In medium bowl beat remaining 2 eggs and cream until blended. Pour evenly over bread and let stand at least 20 minutes or refrigerate covered up to 24 hours.
Bake 45 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Makes 4 servings, about 440 calories each.

1 large or 2 medium-sized tomatoes

1	large onion, cut into 3/4-inch-thick slices
4	beef tenderloin steaks (filet mignon), each 1 inch thick 1/2 cup water
2	tablespoons prepared mustard
4	teaspoons capers, drained Watercress sprigs for garnish
1.	If you like, flute mushrooms. Set aside.
2.	Cut four thick center slices from tomatoes; reserve any leftover tomatoes to use in salad another day. In 10-inch skillet over medium heat, in 1 teaspoon hot butter or margarine, cook tomato slices until heated through. Remove to warm large platter.
3.	Meanwhile, in 12-inch skillet over medium heat, in 2 tablespoons hot butter or margarine (1/4 stick), cook onion until tender, stirring occasionally. Remove to bowl. In drippings remaining in skillet, over medium-high heat, cook mushrooms and tenderloin steaks about 5 minutes for rare or until desired.
NUTTED SWEET-POTATO BALLS
2 1-pound, 2-ounce cans yams, drained
1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup miniature marshmallows
melted butter or margarine
1/3 cup honey
11/2 cups chopped pecans
DAY BEFORE:
1.	Mash yams well, then add salt, pepper, marshmallows and 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine. Form into 12 balls; lay, side by side in 12” by 8” by 2” baking dish, then refrigerate, covered, until needed.
1/2 HOUR BEFORE SERVING:
2 Preheat oven to 350® F.
3.	Heat honey with 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine. Then, with 2 forks, roll each yam ball, first in honey mixture, then in chopped pecans, and return to baking dish.
4.	Spoon 2 tablespoons melted
butter or margarine over the yams; then bake them 15 minutes, or until they are all heated through. Makes 12.
CELEBRITY COOKIES
JANE POWELL‘S PECAN T ASSIES
2 packages (3 oz. each) cream cheese, softened
1	cup butter or margarine, softened
2	cups all-purpose flour Filling
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1	1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
11/2 cups chopped pecans
2	tablespoons melted butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 48 red glace cherries (optional)
In large mixer bowl cream the cheese, butter or margarine and flour. Wrap dough and refrigerate 30 minutes. Pinch off small pieces of dough, roll into balls and press into small (1 3/4-inch) tartlette pans.
Preheat oven to 350® F. In medium bowl combine filling ingredients. Spoon 1/4 teaspoons filling into each pan. Top with a red cherry, if desired. Bake 25 minutes. Cool in pans on wire racks. Makes 4 dozen, about 120 each without the cherry, 130 with.
HAM WITH CABBAGE AND APPLES Top with a dollop of sour cream. Serve with hearty rye bread and pickled beets.

I medium-size Granny Smith apple, quartered, cored then cut in thin wedges.

4	cups coarsely shredded green cabbage (about 12 ozs.)
1 /3 cup red currant jelly 16 ounces boiled ham, but in thin strips (about 31/2 cups) Melt butter in a 4-quart Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, apple and caraway seeds and, stirring often, cook 2 minutes or until onion begins to be translucent.
Stir in cabbage; cover; reduce heat to low and cook 5 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Add jelly and ham; stir 1 to 2 minutes until jelly melts and ham is hot. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.
PASTA STIR-FRY
Soy-flavored shells with strips of ham, peppers, eggs
1	8-oz package targe shell macaroni
6 eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt Salad oil
5	green onions, cut into l-inch pieces
2	red or green peppers, cut into bite-size pieces
1/3 cup water 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 4-oz. package sliced cooked ham, cut into strips
About 30 minutes before serving:
1. — Prepare macaroni as label directs. Drain.
2.	— Meanwhile, in medium bowl with fork or wire whisk, beat eggs and salt until blended.
3.	— In 12-inch skillet over medium heat, in 1 tablespoon hot salad oil, cook green onions and red peppers until tender-crisp; remove to bowl.
4.	— In same skillet over medium-high heat, in 2 more tablespoons hot salad oil, cook egg mixture until eggs are set, stirring frequently. Add water and soy sauce; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add macaroni, green-onion mixture, and ham; cook until heated through, tossing to mix.
Makes 6 main-dish servings. 350 calories per serving.
CHICIKEN STIR-FRY Thin strips of white meat, colorful vegetables in a soy-and-sherry sauce enhanced with a hint of ginger.
Thinly slice 3/4-pound boned, skinned chicken breast. In a medium bowl combine 1/2 cup chicken broth, 2 tablespoons each dry sherry and soy sauce, 1 tablespoon each cider vinegar and sugar, a dash each ground ginger and ground red pepper.
Stir well and pour 2 tablespoons over sliced chicken; marinate 10 minutes.
Add 1 tablespoon cornstarch to remaining sauce; set aside.
In large skillet heat 1 tablespoon salad oil. Add chicken; stir-fry. Add a package (10 or 14 oz.) frozen Oriental vegetables with 2 tablespoons water.
Cover and simmer 2 minutes. Stir sauce and add to skillet. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Serve with rice.
BLUE CHEESE BALL
3	3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
1	4-ounce package blue cheese, crumbled
2	teaspoons bourbon (optional)
3/4 teaspoon dry mustard 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
DAY BEFORE SERVING:
In small bowl with electric mixer at medium speed, beat together cream cheese and blue cheese until soft. Add bourbon and mustard; blend well. With hands, shape cheese mixture into a ball. Wrap with waxed paper or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
AT SERVING TIME:
With hands, reshape ball and roll in sesame seeds. Makes about 32 appetizer servings.

12 St. Clair Pensioners Learn About Incontinence

Today’s senior citizen, on an average, has a longer life expectancy. This is a fact. Today’s senior citizen wants this extended life period to, hopefully, be an active and reasonably enjoyable one. Our physical and mental health is a controlling factor in determining the quality of our lives, and the limits of our activiites. It is therefore essential that we know our body, and the functions of its various parts. At February meeting, we learned about “Incontinence,” or loss of bladder control.
With the aid of slide illustrations, our speaker, Elaine Rozic, a registered nurse, and highly qualified member of the Continence Treatment Center of St. Vincent Charity Hospital, held the attention of some 80 members present. We learned that 50% of all Americans will experience some form of incontinence, or loss of bladder control, during their lifetime. Probably as many as 10 million Americans are now experiencing loss of bladder control. Up to 10% of the population over age 65, and 30% over age 80, suffer from this problem.
BUT NOTE... 70% of the nations current sufferers are under age 65. How interesting. And we thought that it affected only the elderly.
We learned that incontinence can be managed or treated. At the conclusion, Elaine Rozic welcomed and answered the many questions asked.
Our sincere thanks to Elaine for her professional, informative “down to earth” presentation of the subject “Incontinence.” It was noted with pleasure that Elaine Rozic was born, raised, and received her early education in our St. Clair area.
Last month we proudly told you that the St. Clair Slovenian National Home directors chose Ann Skully, our member, as its “Woman of the Year Honoree.” She and selected persons of the other Slovenian Homes will be presented and honored at the annual banquet of the Federation of Slovenian Homes on Sunday, March 20 at the St. Clair Slovenian Home.
Ann has dedicated her help and services to the Home and various groups in our area for many years and continues with her support. She is worthy of the bestowed honor. If you wish to attend the event, call the secretary of the SNH.
Our big coming event is our Annual Chicken & Pork Dinner. The date is Sunday, April 10. The place is the Lower Hall of the St. Clair National Home, at 65th and St. Clair. WE INVITE ALL TO THIS EVENT.

Penicillin and other antibiotics frequently are used to treat viruses, too frequently according to many physicians. Depending upon the life of the virus, most people feel better after two or three days, whether or not they take antibiotics. Antibiotics are not only ineffective treatment for a virus, but also expose patients to side effects, which can be considerable.
It is generally believed, and generally true, that any short-liv.ed illness is caused by a virus. Nevertheless, this is not always the case, and a physician is the best judge of when and if antibiotics or other specific treatments are warranted.
A virus is an organism that has the ability to reproduce inside a living cell. Many viruses affect human beipgs. The most common viruses can be divided into two separate groups — those that.produce respiratory illness, and those that produce gastrointestinal illness.
By far, most viruses affect the upper and lower respiratory system. Many more than 100 viruses cause common colds, which last from three to ten days. When a cold, or other virus, goes away, it means that the body developed an immunity to that particular virus.
New research sheds some light on how colds may be transmitted. Until recently, doctors thought that colds were acquired from droplets in the air, put there when someone with a cold coughed, or sneezed. Lately, however, researchers have found that a couple of more important cold viruses also are spread by contact, from hand to hand.
In most cases, treatment for respiratory viruses consists of aspirin, fluids and rest. Over-the-counter antihistamines may have some value in alleviating symptoms, but they can be dangerous, particularly if too many are taken or if they are taken in combination with some other medication. Their main advantage is that they make a person sleepy — the package label warning not to drive or operate machinery while sedated is given for good reason — and rest helps a cold sufferer feel better.
New products currently being tested may offer more relief. Among them are aerosols inhaled through the nose, which improve local immunity in that area, and tablets, which taken orally, temporarily affect the body’s level of immunity.

It was in 1795 that the State of Connecticut offered for sale the northeast Ohio forestlands that were formerly French and English possessions.
After surveryors had finished their work in the N.E. Ohio virgin land, our St. Clair area from E. 55 to E. 79 had been divided into eight 100 acre lots, numbers 343 to 350.
Connecticut citizens purchased this pristine territory for 40 cents an acre — $40 for the 100 acre tract. The land purchasers then made the long and arduous trek to the Lake Erie shore lands to begin settlements.
By 1852, the original 100 acre lots in the St. Clair area were already reduced to about 20 acre farms except for No. 350 lot. That was the Bingham Estate and a decade later was the W. J. Gordon Estate. The adjacent land from E. 40th to E. 55th St. was the Leonard Case family farm, founders and benefactors of Case University.
Also, in 1865, E. 61 Street was cut into five acre fruit and vegetable farms. The Helbig family at E. 61st near Edna were early residents of the neighborhood. (East Cleveland Township joined Cleveland in 1872.)
From 1869 to 1875 the land from E. 55th to E. 61st between the lake and Superior were parceled into city lots, mostly with 40 foot frontages and 150 foot (or more) depth. Home construction began at a furious pace and by 1880 most of the streets in the vicinity were completed.
During the 1880s the area from E. 51st to E. 55th, part of the Case farm, were subdivided into home sites and the area developed into a fine residential neighborhood, also.
