Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 07/49 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 17. 02. 2013 1. POSTNA NEDELJA 1st SUNDAY OF LENT Fr. 1 Sunday's Readings 1st Sunday of the Lent Response: "Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble." First Reading Deuteronomy 26:4-10 A thanksgiving to God for life and blessings. Second Reading Romans 10:8-13 Faith is not obscure or complicated. It is pure and simple, and finds its echo in the human heart. Gospel_Luke 4:1-13 All the conflicts and struggles of Our Lord's life are captured in the drama of the temptations in the wilderness. "Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan." Illustration White Hart Lane is the name of a football stadium in North London, and it is the home of Tottenham Hotspur. They have a long history in the top flight of English club football. They have won their fair share of trophies through the years, maybe not as many as their followers would like, but recently they have been enjoying good times. They have a tradition of trying to play the game "as it should be played", with elegance and style. In their history, Tottenham look back with particular joy to the football season of 1960-61. In that season's competitions, the club won both trophies that were played for in English football, the League Championship and the FA Cup. They were the first team in many a long year to "do the double", as it is called. There was great quality throughout the side, and they played with superb style. The captain of that team was an eloquent Northern Irishman, Danny Blanchflower. Danny Blanchflower was asked at the time for his thoughts on his team's great success, and he replied that football is not really about success or about winning things, lovely as that is. Football is about glory. This sublime answer is now written in large letters along Tottenham Hotspur's stadium roof for all people to see, and hopefully to learn from: "The game is about glory!" Gospel Teaching When Jesus leaves the Jordan river, he is filled with the glory of God's Holy Spirit. He has been anointed with that Spirit, endowed with all grace for his mission in this world. He looks like any other man, yet his daily encounters over the next three years will reveal the greatness in him more and more. But at this moment, as he leaves the Jordan, with the Father's affirmation ringing in his ears, he is led out into the wilderness, where his mettle will be tested. The temptations that we read about in today's Gospel are expressed in a highly dramatized form. It could almost be a dream sequence. But the reality of it was true enough. Jesus found himself, all through his public life, tempted to take an easier, more popular route. Pressure was exerted on him both by enemies and by friends to say or act differently from what he did. His preaching of a new kingdom of God was uncomfortable, and many did not want to know. Those who wanted simply to see a better material world would be disappointed: "Man does not live on bread alone." Those who looked for a political revolutionary would have to look elsewhere. Jesus did not intend to rule the world in that way. Those people would later shout: "Not this man, but Barabbas." As for those who think you can behave foolishly in this world and not pay a price, Jesus reminds us not to put God to the test. Application The man who emerges from the desert, and from that encounter with Satan, heads up to his home country of Galilee to begin the most glorious chapter in the story of the world. He will show, by word and by deed, how glorious is God, and the glory that awaits God's children. He will preach good news to the poor. He will mend hearts that are broken. He will set prisoners free. As for the devil's temptations, Jesus will turn them on their head. When it comes to bread, he will feed the hungry crowds, and he will give himself to us as the "bread of life" in the Eucharist, teaching us to pray for our daily bread. When it comes to braving the abyss, Jesus will let himself be taken as a criminal and put to death on a cross, trusting in the Father whose voice he heard at the Jordan river; and the Father will save him out of death. When it comes to the kingdoms of this world, Jesus will gather his disciples on a mountainside, and will tell them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations." Our human life is about glory. Our little journey from cradle to grave is so much more. "My father was a wandering Aramaean," the old Jewish proclamation of faith says. I was nothing, but now I am settled and happy, and it is all God's doing. Glory be to God. Lunch tickets will be on sale between Sunday masses starting this Sunday, Feb. 17. Advanced tickets will be: Adult-$12 ( $15 at the door); Children 4-10-$5; 3 and under- free. Reservations will only be held for pre-paid tickets. In an effort to be able to properly arrange seating and prepare food, we would very much appreciate knowing our numbers in advance. Thank you for understanding our concern and reserving your tickets in advance. Lottery tickets are being sold between Sunday masses. If all members could please attempt to sell 5 books each, that would be great. All proceeds from the sale of our lottery tickets go directly to the parish. If you have any unsold lottery tickets, please return them and we will sell them between masses. Thank you for your help with this. Noodles will be available only on the day of the Bazaar beginning at 10:30am; after the first morning mass. Baked Strudel will also be sold at the Bazaar. Believe it or not our CWL members had the energy to prepare some apple strudel for pre-sale. We have a limited amount for pre-orders, so please contact Heidy Novak at 905-689-1367 if you would like to order strudel to take home. Two longer lengths will be sold for $15. Pre-Sale strudel will be available to pick up on Saturday March 2, in the upper hall between 9am and 12 noon. We kindly ask all parishioners for donations of new or crafted items for the Penny Sale and Raffle tables. These can be given to our members who will be selling tickets between masses as well as on the morning of Saturday, March 2. We would greatly appreciate these donations by Saturday, before the Bazaar date so that we can properly prepare them for presentation. The Crown & Anchor table is back this year, so we look forward the interaction there as well. This is our leagues biggest fundraising effort. We have been and continue to prepare for a day that our parish community can come together to share a lovely afternoon of fun with family and friends. We look forward to your attendance, generosity and support to help make this a successful parish event. We look forward to seeing you all there! A quick reminder that CWL Membership fees are now past-due. Please hand them in as soon as possible. Thank you for your attention to the matter. THE CATOLIC GIRLS CLUB The Catholic Girls Club is working hard to prepare the children's center at the bazaar so that the young kids can enjoy and have a memorable experience. We are in need of some donations for young children to include on their penny sale table. Also, if you have any gently used or new teddy bears that you could part with, we would love to be able to include them in our children's center. There will be a box at the door for these types of items. Anything you could help us out with for the children's center would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your help, see you at the Bazaar!
