St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 36/49 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 08. 09. 2013 23. NEDELJA MED LETOM Rojstvo Device Marije - Mala maša 23rd SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME Fr. Nikakor. Take ljubezni pa ni brez žrtve. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. First Reading Wisdom 9:13-18 Wisdom and the Holy Spirit make known to us the divine will of God. Second Reading Philemon 9-10. 12-17 We are called to be brothers and sisters, not slaves. Gospel Luke 14:25-33 To be true disciples we are called to be prepared to give up everything. "None of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions Illustration "Ninety per cent of talent is hard work," the saying goes. It is a difficult saying to prove wrong. The people who do become successful in their lives are rarely lazy. It is as though their natural talent carries with it enough energy and application to enable their inspiration to lead to concrete achievement. They may not work from nine to five. To the uninspired they may even seem to be lazing around; but when the muse takes hold, they apply themselves totally. For many the "lazing around" is often a sort of contemplation which allows the creative project the time to form properly. For some the process of creation is full of joy; for others it takes the form of a much darker journey of doubt and searching. We are all made differently. Of course there will always be the charlatans as well, those who pretend to have great abilities and to be working hard when their main talent lies in persuading others that they have more ability than is really the case. As another saying goes, "fine words butter no parsnips", but it is amazing how convincing a con artist can be. At the heart of it all is the need for what we might call coherence. We have to choose the right path, develop the skills to make sure that what begins as an idea in the mind finds fulfilment in the real world. Whether we are thinking of the arts or the sciences, that choosing of the right road is the important complement to all the hard work that then follows. Gospel Teaching Among the themes St Luke enjoys exploring in his Gospel, two that contrast are his emphasis on compassion and forgiveness, and the uncompromising demands Jesus makes of his disciples. As Jesus says quite bluntly, if we are not able to carry our cross and come after him, we cannot be his disciples. The two stories that follow help us understand this saying. Jesus takes the examples of two people faced with difficult decisions. First, someone is building a tower. If he fails to budget for his building plans satisfactorily, he will end up a laughing stock, as he will have an edifice that is only half built. The other example is that of a king making up his mind whether to take on an adversary with twice the number of soldiers at his command. If he cannot work out in advance whether he can win the battle with his smaller numbers, then he needs to sue for peace in advance. In both cases we have people calculating wisely what they need to do to achieve a satisfactory outcome to their planning. For his followers, Jesus says, this preparatory calculation lies in freeing themselves from any earthly attachments or possessions. If we try to follow Jesus without this freedom of mind and heart, these attachments will get in the way of our resolve. We will not have the right frame of mind to follow through our good intentions. It will be a case of that other well -known saying: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Application Today we live in a world in which we have become very dependent upon material possessions, much more so than the people among whom Jesus lived. We could argue that this makes it all the more difficult for us to be his disciples. It will certainly be impossible for most of us to take his words literally and strip ourselves of all our human connections and material possessions. This stripping away, however, is not an end in itself. It is to ensure that we are open to the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that enables us to follow Christ. Freeing ourselves from our possessions clears the way for the Spirit to act in us freely and successfully. We can test our own dependence on possessions by seeing how easily we let go of them. Could I cap the amount I spend on myself by giving away as much as I buy for myself? Is there some cherished possession I could give away? Could I choose to involve myself in an act of charity rather than go on a shopping spree? Could I spend some time with someone in need rather than with my friends? Such choices may seem insignificant but they are a way to reveal the strength of our attachments, and how far we are truly free to respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit. SLOVENSKA ŠOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones used in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our Kindergarten and Level One programs are geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. -with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 14 and 21, from 10:00 am to 12:00pm in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summers of 2000, 2004, 2008 and this past summer, we organized an excursion to Slovenia to give the children the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last three excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to possibly organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 14 and 21. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you! Sandy Allen - Principal Slovenian International Language School DAY OF PRAYER and FASTING FOR SYRIA PARISHIONERS ARE URGED TO MAKE SEPTEMBER 7th a day of prayer and fasting for Syria at the fervent request of Pope Francis in his Angelus greeting last Sunday. The Bishops of Canada had already announced a similar initiative for September 14th. Because information about the Pope's request came following last Sunday's Masses, too late to be announced in our Parishes, the September 14th day of prayer and fasting is still encouraged for Canadian Catholics. Those who are aware and can pray and fast both days (7th and 14th) are invited to do so! Contributions to the Special Collection to assist Syrian refugees, sponsored by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, should be forwarded from the Parishes to the Chancery before September 14th. The collected funds will be sent on to CCODP immediately following the day of prayer and fasting. The Most Rev. Duhovnik, obilen možakar z globokim prodornim glasom, dečku ukaže, naj sede, ga pogleda naravnost v oči in z resnim glasom vpraša: "Kje je Bog?"
