Help Needed - Miklavž- St. Nicholas Festival Needs Servers for Dinner. In 1961, during his inaugural address, the American President John Kennedy said: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" It is evident that many Slovenians in the Hamilton area have taken this approach to life in our parish—they have contributed uncountable volunteer hours in serving their community. In one generation of immigration to Canada, Slovenians have built excellent facilities to assist in the preservation of a Slovenian cultural identity. Then they developed programs like the Slovenian school, choir, folklore group, credit unions etc., organized and staffed primarily by volunteers. Recently, while I was preparing a display for a function at the parish hall, I was approached by a young girl of about 12 years old and asked how much I was being paid to do this work. Frankly, I was shocked by the question. I hope this incident was an unusual one and that we are doing a better job of instilling a volunteer ethic in our young generation for the good of our community. The next generation has been presented a great gift and advantage in that, the physical facilities are already complete and are ready to be utilized. Only time and participation in the existing programs and/or development of new programs is necessary. Our real strength is found in our participation. As we start the celebrations associated with the 50th anniversary of our parish, it is my hope that young parents and youth become more involved - take advantage of what is here and invent or re-invent what is needed. The way forward is not always easy and convenient - certainly many people have some distance to drive to take advantage of the facilities - but in the end, the effort is worthwhile and rewarding. This coming Sunday we are continuing the great tradition of Miklavž - St. Nicholas. While its focus is primarily on children, it is an opportunity to support our parish, its volunteers and re-affirm our fellowship in a cultural and social setting. This great event does not happen by magic. We still need about 8 persons to volunteer to serve lunch from noon to 3:00 pm on Sunday, Dec 8, 2013 These persons should be at least teenagers but no experience is necessary. Their assistance is not only needed, it is extremely valued and their work can also be used toward their high school volunteer hours requirement. Please contact Sandy Allen (905-548-0889) as soon as possible if you can help with the service of lunch. Tony Horvat, Parish Council Member miklavževanje - st. nicholas day Slovenska šola in Kulturno društvo Hamilton-Wentworth pri sv. There are two ways that you may submit your responses: 1) Fill in the questionnaire which can be found on the Hamilton Diocesan web site at www.hamiltondiocese.com. The questionnaire seeks information on the faithful's understanding of various Church teachings on marriage and family. It can be completed on line, or printed and faxed or mailed to the Family Ministry Office. The deadline for submission is December 16, 2013. 2) Attend one of two focus group gatherings where the questionnaire will be discussed and responses collected to include in the final report to be submitted by the end of December. Both gatherings will occur from 10:00 a.m. 12:00 noon and you are asked to RRSP by phone (905528-7988 ext. 2249) or e-mail (familyministry@hamiltondiocese.com) if you plan to attend. You may join in a focus group at the Chancery Office (700 King Street West, Hamilton) on Saturday, December 7, or at St. Anthony Daniel Parish (29 Midland Drive, Kitchener) on Saturday, December 14. The preparatory information being gathered will provide essential input to the Bishops as they prepare for this Extraordinary Synod. Please consider engaging in this process in one or both of the ways provided. For further information contact Teresa Hartnett at 905-528-7988 ext. 2250 or thartnett@hamiltondiocese.com. Response: Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. First Reading Isaiah 2:1-5 Isaiah's transforming vision of a lasting peace, crafted from former causes of destruction. Second Reading Romans 13:11-14 Salvation is not just about the future. It is near; it is already at hand. Gospel_Matthew 24:37-44 Stay awake, preparing for the coming of the Son of Man. "Stay awake" Illustration Sometimes people stay up late to watch events on television as they actually take place. They may want to capture the excitement of the results of an election coming in live; or to experience the thrill of watching the Olympics or other sports events as they happen, even if they are in a faraway part of the world. They don't want to miss the excitement of the moment. If someone says to them, "Why not just wait until you wake up and get the final results in the morning", they will look at them as if to say, "It just wouldn't be the same." It's easy to understand why people do this: to be as present as possible to events as they unfold. Gospel Teaching There's a great sense of immediacy in the three readings for the first Sunday of Advent. Perhaps on this day we want to pay particular attention to the first reading, because not only is this the first scripture passage to be proclaimed today, it is the first passage for this liturgical year; and, because this is Year A, it provides the first words of scripture we read in the entire three-year cycle. We are told of the "vision" of the prophet Isaiah about Judah and Jerusalem. If these places seem far from us, the substance of the prophecy is anything but distant. We are told that something will happen "in the days to come". Now, for a prophet to be recognised as a genuine spokesperson for the Lord, the prophet's word had to be fulfilled among the people for whom it had been spoken. This makes sense when we think about it: what use is to people to hear a prophetic word they never see or hear actually taking place? Isaiah foresees the day when true peace will come about - a remarkable vision, given that all of Jerusalem is in fear that the powerful Assyrians will destroy their city. Peace will be so complete that people will turn their swords into ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks - weapons of war converted into tools for cultivation and growth. It will all take place in days to come, but days that will come soon. St Paul is even more insistent about something that is coming "soon". Salvation, he says, is nearer at hand than when he and his readers were converted, and "the time" has come; time to "wake up". Waking up is a metaphor for action, for accepting the Gospel as genuine. Waking up demands action. It calls for a life governed by principles of decency; a life that can be lived in the full glare of daylight, rather than one that is confined to the darkness of secrecy. Finally, the Gospel sounds a note of even more immediacy, when Jesus insists, "stay awake". Taking the example of the total unawareness about the impending flood in Noah's time, Jesus urges his disciples to remain awake. His words to them are directed to their preparation for the return of the Son of Man, and the last sentence of today's Gospel makes it explicit: "you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect". Application There is, however, something puzzling about the mixture of ideas in today's Gospel. It is one thing to stand ready for the future return of the Son of Man, but to stay awake is something we can only do for the present. The two ideas are not contradictory, however. The conclusion we can draw is that it is only by staying sufficiently awake to the presence of the Son of Man among us in the reality of today that we will ever be able to stand ready for his return - whenever that will take place. We are people who profess the belief that the Lord is truly present in the Eucharist, in the proclamation of God's word, where even as few as two or three are gathered in God's name, and in each of our brothers and sisters who are children of God. Staying awake is a good way to describe the attitude necessary to be aware of these ways in which the Lord is present. To stay awake is to be alert - to be aware of what is going on and to be on the lookout for the Lord among us. By staying awake, we can heighten our ability to seek the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, in his word and in each other. teen grief_ Grief is a difficult time for every person, but it can be a particularly vulnerable time for young people. Good support for teens during grief can have a positive impact throughout their lives. The session is being jointly sponsored by the Diocesan Liturgy Office and the Office for Family. The workshop will provide tools for supporting teen grief, especially after a suicide, as well as look at the Catholic rituals undertaken during the funeral liturgy, providing practical ways to incorporate them into any other memorials etc. that may be planned after a death.
