Hepatitis C is a liver infection transmitted mostly through blood and blood products. In Slovenia, mandatory large-scale testing of blood and blood products for hepatitis C was introduced in 1993. Before that date, getting hepatitis C from blood and blood products was much more likely, therefore pre-1993 blood recipients are considered a population group at increased risk for hepatitis C. The purpose of the study was to establish whether it is judicious to recommend blood testing for hepatitis C to asymptomatic individuals who received blood transfusion before 1993. Participants and methods. A questionnaire inquiring about blood transfusion received before 1993 was mailed to 1,241 individuals, aged 18 years and older,receiving primary health services at the Trebnje Health Centre. The response rate was 52,4% (651 respondents). Seventy-five (11,5%) subjects responded they had received blood transfusion before 1993, and 51 (68%) of them, aged 51 years on average, consented to blood testing for hepatitis C. Results. The most frequent reason for blood transfusion was surgery (45,3%), followed by pregnancy and birth (33,3%), injuries (18,7%), and anaemias (2,7%). Blood transfusion was received on average 19 years ago. In the group of pre-1993 blood recipients, none tested positive for hepatitis C. Conclusions. As indicated by the results of the study, there is no need to recommend asymptomatic pre-1993 blood transfusion recipients in Slovenia to have hepatitis C testing. Antibodies against hepatitis C virus are rarely present in the Slovene population, therefore a study on a larger group of younger pre-1993 blood transfusion recipients will be necessary to either confirm or refute the necessity of routine hepatitis C testing in asymptomaticindividuals treated by blood transfusion before 1993"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Izhodišča. Hepatitis C je okužba jeter, ki se prenaša pretežno s krvjo in krvnimi pripravki. V Sloveniji je bilo uvedeno obvezno testiranje krvi in krvnih pripravkov na prisotnost virusa hepatitisa C z letom 1993. Pred tem je bila možnost prenosa okužbe s krvjo in krvnimi pripravki bistveno večja. Prejemniki transfuzije krvi pred letom 1993 so ena izmed skupin s tveganjem zahepatitis C. Zanimalo nas je, ali je v našem okolju asimptomatskim prejemnikom transfuzije krvi pred letom 1993 smiselno svetovati testiranje krvi na prisotnost okužbe z virusom hepatitisa C. Bolniki in metode. 1241 polnoletnim osebam, ki so pripadale eni ambulanti splošne medicine v ZD Trebnje, je bil po pošti poslan vprašalnik o prejeti transfuziji pred letom 1993. Vprašalnik je vrnilo 651 (52,4%) vseh anketirancev. Med vrnjenimi vprašalniki je bilo 75 (11,5%) takih, pri katerih je bil odgovor o prejeti transfuziji pritrdilen. 51 oseb (68%), ki je prejelo transfuzijo, se je odzvalo vabilu na odvzem krvi zaradi ugotavljanja okužbe z virusom hepatitisa C. Rezultati. Na prvem mestu po vzrokih za transfuzijo so bili predvideni operativni posegi (45,3%), sledila sta nosečnost in porod (33,3%), na tretjem mestu so bile poškodbe (18.7%) in na četrtem anemija (2,7%). Od prejete transfuzije je minilo v povprečju 19 let. Med testiranimi prejemniki transfuzije ni bilo nikogar, pri katerih bi ugotovili okužbo z virusom hepatitisa C. Zaključki. Svetovanje testiranje krvi na prisotnost okužbe z virusom hepatitisa C asimptomatskim prejemnikom transfuzije pred letom 1993 v Sloveniji glede na rezultate pričujoče študije ni smiselno. Prisotnost protiteles proti hepatitis C virusu pri krvodajalcih je pri nas redka, zato bišele študija na večjem vzorcu zlasti mlajših prejemnikov transfuzije pred letom 1993 odgovorila na vprašanje o smiselnosti rutinskega testiranja asimptomatskih prejemnikov transfuzije krvi pred letom 1993"}],"edm:type":"TEXT","dc:type":[{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"znanstveno časopisje"},{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"journals"},{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785"}]},"ore:Aggregation":{"@rdf:about":"http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-ZWBYEGB2","edm:aggregatedCHO":{"@rdf:resource":"URN:NBN:SI:doc-ZWBYEGB2"},"edm:isShownBy":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-ZWBYEGB2/dc21adbe-d0ab-487a-b552-fa9ba9dafc0e/PDF"},"edm:rights":{"@rdf:resource":"http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"},"edm:provider":"Slovenian National E-content Aggregator","edm:intermediateProvider":{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"National and University Library of Slovenia"},"edm:dataProvider":{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Inštitut za varovanje zdravja RS"},"edm:object":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-ZWBYEGB2/maxi/edm"},"edm:isShownAt":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-ZWBYEGB2"}}}}
