All these disturbances can disruptively affect ecosystem structure and for this reason consequences of natural disturbances are often labelled as forest damage. Considering the scale of the disturbance (damaged area, growing stock, etc.) we classify disturbances a ssmall-scale and large-scale disturbances. Clear and quantified criteria are needed for objective determination of large-scale disturbances in forests. After examining international practice and Slovenian legislature we classified factors able to cause large-scale disturbances in forests in three groups (abiotic, biotic, anthropogenic factors). We decided to use statistical approach for setting criteria; as large-scale disturbances we thus defined the ones differing widely from the long-year average. For calculation of the latter ones we used data bases of the Slovenia Forest Service, namely data basis on fires (1995-2009) and data basis on felling (2000-2010). As a large-scale disturbance we defined a disturbance whose area exceeded the 99th percentile of distribution of all disturbances in the analyzed period. The suggested marginal values of areas are 30 ha for anthropogenic, 60 ha for fire and 90 ha for abiotic and biotic disturbances. We prepared a scheme according to which large-scale disturbances in forest could be classified. With our suggestion we want above all to contribute to the wider process of preparing the final proposal which would comprise all stakeholders and could be introduced into practice through forestry policyVeter, sneg, ogenj in napadi žuželk so najpogostejši vzroki motenj v Evropskih gozdovih. Vsem motnjam je skupno, da lahko moteče vplivajo na zgradbo ekosistema, zaradi česar posledice naravnih motenj pogosto označimo kot poškodbo gozda. Glede na obseg poškodbe (poškodovana površina, lesna zaloga itd.) delimo poškodbe na poškodbe malega in velikega obsega. Za objektivno opredelitev poškodb velikega obsega v gozdovih potrebujemo jasna in kvantificirana merila. Po pregledu mednarodne prakse in slovenske zakonodajesmo dejavnike, ki lahko povzročijo poškodbe velikega obsega v gozdovih razdelili v tri skupine (abiotski, biotski, antropogeni). Pri določitvi meril smo se odločili za uporabo statističnega pristopa in sicer smo kot poškodbe velikega obsega opredelili tiste, ki so bistveno odstopale od večletnega povprečja. Za izračun slednjih smo uporabili podatkovne zbirke Zavod za gozdove Slovenije, in sicer podatkovno zbirko o požarih (1995-2009) ter podatkovno zbirko o poseku (2000-2010). Kot poškodbe velikega obsega smo določili poškodbe, katerih površina je bila večja od 99-ega percentila porazdelitve vseh poškodb v analiziranem obdobju. Predlagane mejne vrednosti površin so 30 ha za antropogene, 60 ha za požare in 90 ha za abiotske ter biotske poškodbe. Pripravili smo shemo po kateri bi lahko razvrščali (klasificirali) poškodbe velikega obsega v gozdovih.
