A healthy diet usually also includes regular consumption of breakfast. Breakfast is the first meal of the day after the longest period of sleep and it is consumed within the first 2-3 hours after waking up. For years now, the role and importance of regular consumption of breakfast have been well-founded and established in practice as part of the recommendations of a balanced diet. Today, numerous epidemiological studies conclude that a regular consumption of breakfast serves as a dietary marker of a nutritional pattern of a healthier lifestyle. On the other hand, various intervention studies have reported contradictory results connected with consuming or skipping breakfast. The studies have found a negative, positive, and non-significant effect of consuming or skipping breakfast on body composition, appetite control, health and the contribution to a nutritionally adequate dietary pattern and the effect on the reduced or increased risk of premature mortality or a longer life expectancy. An ordinary consumer is therefore caught between the recommendations of official health organizations and the published contradictory findings of scientific research, where the biggest problems are different definitions of breakfast, the influence of differentiating between different qualities of breakfast and the lack of long-term intervention studies"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Zdrav in aktiven življenjski slog vključuje zdravo prehranjevanje, primerno intenzivno in pogosto gibalno dejavnost (po možnosti tudi v naravnem okolju), odsotnost kajenja, kontrolo vnosa alkohola, ustrezen odziv na stresne situacije in zadostno dnevno količino spanja. V zdravo prehranjevanje praviloma uvrščamo tudi redno zajtrkovanje. Zajtrk je prvi obrok v dnevu, ki prekine post po najdaljši fazi spanja in je zaužit v prvih 2-3 urah faze budnosti. Vloga in pomembnost rednega uživanja zajtrka sta v konceptu priporočil uravnoteženega prehranjevanja že leta strokovno dobro utemeljeni in uveljavljeni v praksi. Številne epidemiološke raziskave danes zaključujejo, da je redno zajtrkovanje prehranski označevalec prehranjevalnega vzorca, ki ga lahko uporabimo kot enega izmed napovedovalcev bolj zdravega načina življenja. Vendar pa so, na drugi strani, številne intervencijske raziskave poročale o protislovnih rezultatih, povezanih z uživanjem ali z izpuščanjem zajtrka. Pri tem so ugotovile tako negativni in pozitivni kot tudi neznačilni učinek uživanja oziroma izpuščanja zajtrka na sestavo telesa, kontrolo apetita, zdravje in doprinos k hranilno zadostnem prehranjevalnem vzorcu in na zmanjšano ali povečano tveganje za prezgodnjo umrljivost oziroma daljšo pričakovano življenjsko dobo.
