The purpose of the article is to investigate the role of mass media in the process of instigating hostilities among Yugoslav nations and to find out whether they were truly independent,or merely an instrument and to what extent - of nationalistic political elites. The empirical analysis is based upon theoretical model for the study of propaganda and broad documentation on media activity. The theoretical model consists of propaganda and ideology, especially nationalism, collective and selective memory loss, (de) construction of national memory, the attitude towards the other, cases of hard propaganda, antipropaganda,use of language, source criticism, iconography, the relationship between visual and textual information, the context of propaganda, the public and the structure of propaganda organisation. The author applied content analysis to media reporting, which enabled him to illustrate individual elements of theoretical model with notorious cases of media propagandistic activity. The empirical analysis encompasses the content of media propaganda, its discursive and visual elements, and the context in which propaganda was performed. The analysis reveals the abuse of television and printed media to instigate animosity, intolerance, fear and the feeling of threat among Yugoslav nations. Political elites took over media control by dismissing off the nonconformist editors and journalists,and by intimidating and disciplining media employees. Consequently media spread routine lies, deceptions, populism and war mongering. The role of media in Yugoslav conflicts thus proved to be more or less instrumental and not independent. However, the participating editors and journalists share the moral responsibility for war and its consequences with the political elites"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Autore analizza il ruolo dei media e propaganda nel conflitto armato sul territorio di ex - Jugoslavia all'inizio degli anni novanta del secolo scorso.
