Examples employing the concept of feedstock roasting in order to affect its technical and other characteristics might be found in diverse areas: caffeine content and the development of oils that give a taste to coffee is influenced by roasting; iron ore has been roasted in order to decrease the water content and to improve the chemical composition of the ore. The concept of biomass torrefaction shares the same analogy: torrefying wood biomass in special chambers with controlled conditions decreases its water content and increases its calorific value and hydrophobicity. High efficiency and broad usability of the final product in the Bioenergy sector makes the technology attractive and offers numerous opportunities for new businessesPrispevek obravnava tehnološki proces praženja lesa, predstavlja osnovni koncept procesa ter podaja pregled prednosti in izzive rabe tehnologije. Primere konceptov praženja osnovne surovine z namenom spremembe tehničnih ali preostalih lastnosti slednje najdemo na različnih področjih: s praženjem kave vplivamo na vsebnost kofeina in razvoj olj, ki kavi določajo okus; s praženjem rude so rudi izboljšali kemijsko sestavo ter ji odstranili večino vode. Logika praženja lesa je analogna opisanima: s segrevanjem lesa v posebnih prostorih in nadzorovanih razmerah zmanjšati vsebnost vode, povečati kurilno vrednost in neomočljivost.
